Helen Elliott moves to pastures new Chief Executive Helen Elliott is leaving the Michael Sobell Hospice charity in March 2015, after four years. Helen was the charity’s first general manager (and later became CEO). Her brief was to manage the charity on a day to day basis, allowing the trustees to step back from operational duties to fulfil a more strategic role. During her tenure at the Michael Sobell Hospice charity, Helen has built strong links with the clinical team. Achievements during her time in post include a new website with information for patients, their families, and supporters; rebranding the charity; introduction of a regular giving programme; opening a streamlined existing processes and warehouse; and introduction of brought in many new ones. Ebay and online selling of donated Helen says: “I will really miss goods. In addition Helen has
MSH. I have enjoyed watching the many different ways the community engages with MSH to raise money for patient care – from vintage fairs to sponsored walks to sky dives – and have valued the support and dedication of our amazing army of volunteers. I am proud to have played a part in the development of this wonderful charity, which was originally set up to provide comforts for patients, and is now a medium sized charity funding the hospice to the tune of over £2500 per day”. Helen will become CEO of Herts Young Homeless, a charity that supports 16-24 years olds, those in crisis and individuals at risk of becoming homeless. We wish Helen well in her new role and welcome Lindsey Fealey, who takes over as MSH Chief Executive in March.
Bouquets of kindness delivered by angels You may have noticed more flowers than usual at the Hospice over the past year. This is thanks to the wonderful floral charity Floral Angels, a small, volunteer run charity working out of New Covent Garden Flower Market in Vauxhall. They recycle donated flowers from events, weddings and florists, restyling them into bouquets of kindness for delivery to hospices, care homes, homeless shelters and many more worthy causes throughout London and the Greater London area. Antonella Corby is a volunteer at Floral Angels and made Floral Angels’ first delivery to Michael Sobell House in January 2013. She has now delivered 136 floral bouquets and arrangements, all of which have been very well received. “I have had some wonderful feedback from MSH about how the flowers brighten up the environment and give everyone a lift. When Floral Angels asked me if I had any local places I would like to deliver to, MSH was the first that came to mind. My late mother-in-law Meryl Corby volunteered there for some time several years ago and always said what a wonderful organisation it was and how happy it made her to help
the people there”, said Antonella. In total Floral Angels have delivered over 4,000 bouquets of kindness. They rely on volunteers and donations to help run their delivery van, pay for sundries and other costs. They are currently looking for volunteer drivers for a few hours a

96 years of caring Three nurses at MSH recently received awards for long service and commitment. Between them Anne Cummings, Yvonne Blundell and Myrna Paes have worked at MSH for 96 years! They have all seen a lot of changes over the years and are truly committed to caring for their patients. Anne Cummings, Registered Nurse, qualified as a SEN in 1976 and has worked at MSH for 38 years “There have been a lot of advances in palliative care over the years especially in the type of drugs available to the patients. The care has always been good at MSH and we have worked with whatever medicines we had. Now we are able to offer more controlled and effective pain relief which means that I can make my patients as comfortable as possible, the reason I came into nursing. I love working at MSH, especially the teamwork amongst the staff who are all very supportive of each other.“ Yvonne Blundell, Clinical Support Worker has worked at MSH for 29 years “Although there have been many changes over the years at MSH, the basic nursing care is the same and I hope that never changes. We offer a very holistic approach to care, offering all of our patients and their relatives the chance to talk freely about their treatment and concerns. We really get the chance to get to know our patients and their families. We are now able to offer many options for symptom control which were once unavailable, enabling patients to spend more time at home. I love the philosophy and atmosphere at MSH
and have a wonderful group of colleagues many of whom I have known for a long time. I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.” Myrna Paes, Clinical Support Worker has also been at MSH for 29 years “Yvonne and I were the first NVQ Healthcare Assistants who were trained at Mount Vernon Hospital. Our role has changed a lot over the years. We are now more highly regarded amongst the staff and patients due to the level of mandatory training we have to undertake. The training is paramount to our role and keeps us up to date with all the current drugs and procedures. I get so much job satisfaction at MSH. I have the time to care for my patients and I don’t have to rush with them. I always feel good at the end of the day and that I have achieved something however big or small.
Mayor’s Charity Appeal Since the Mayor of Hillingdon launched her annual Charity Appeal for 2014/2015 she has already donated several items to the hospice with the funds she has raised. These items include; a lawnmower and a sundial for the hospice garden, a tumble dryer for our Day Care Unit,

Lottery The Hospice Lottery (HLP) continues to grow and raise amazing amounts of money to help fund the many services that MSH provides. Since MSH joined the partnership in 2005 we have received just under £1 million, forming a significant part of our fundraising efforts. And the great thing about our lottery is that whilst raising funds, we also have 114 guaranteed weekly prize winners with a top prize of a £1,000 and a rollover that can reach £10,000. to our fantastic fundraisers!
Newlyweds donate thousands Sophie Jarman and Les Fraser married in July last year. But unlike most couples who are getting married, they didn’t ask their guests for presents, but decided to donate all of their wedding gifts to MSH instead. “We were bringing together two families and two houses full of stuff – we literally had two of everything!! So we decided that rather than get more cutlery and toasters we would ask our friends and family to donate to this wonderful charity” said Les. And as if that wasn’t generous enough, two weeks before their wedding, this
crazy couple decided to take part in the British 10K Run. They wanted to get fit before the big day and raise funds for us at the same time. Sophie wanted to fit into her wedding gown, and Les needed to get into his kilt! Both Sophie and Les had lost their previous partners to cancer, and both had been cared for by MSH in their final days. “We wanted to give something back to this special place that helped us, our families and our children at a difficult time”, said Sophie. Thanks and best wishes for the future to this lovely couple who raised £5,542.

5 happy to get dirty for a good cause
In August last year five brave challengers got down and dirty and took on The Nuts Challenge – a 7k, 100 obstacle assault course in the mud in aid of MSH – and between them raised over £7,500. Terry and Lisa Spitz, Robert Pepper,
Paul Kaye and Wil Adams all put on their oldest lycra and took off to the muddy parts of Dorking in Surrey to take on the military style assault course designed to push individuals to their absolute limit. Terry said, “I’m so glad I took part in the event, it was great fun, a real challenge, with great camaraderie and all for a great cause!” Wil said, “we lost my mother-in law, Karen Williams, last year and wanted to help support the amazing team at Michael Sobell Hospice that helped her through the final four years of her life.” If you want to take part in this year’s Nuts Challenge on 5 September see our website for details – only 35 places available!
20 fellahs on a mission Pictured above are Team F.I.N.D (Fellahs In Need of Direction!), a determined group of 20 Carillion employees and their friends who took on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge and the National 3 Peaks Challenge last year. Between them, the group hiked a distance of over 50 miles and climbed a total of 17,882 feet. They raised £2,100 which was split between MSH and Scotty’s Little Soldiers. • Megan Holmes who shaved off all of her hair in memory of her Nan who was cared for at MSH. She raised an incredible £4,270 and still looks amazing with no hair! Here are her before and after shots.

Volunteers
Every issue we feature volunteers who give their time to Michael Sobell Hospice
Pam Montgomery first became involved with MSH in 1982 as a volunteer in the inpatient unit. 32 years later she has just retired from the board of trustees and recently received a Long Term Commitment to Volunteering Award at the Hillingdon Volunteer Awards for her incredible volunteering and fundraising efforts. Pam initially got involved with MSH when she was looking for a local charity to volunteer for. At first she made tea and chatted with the patients one evening a week. Then she decided to set up and recruit a volunteer team from her friends and her local Townswomen’s Guild in Northwood. As the years went by, she became more involved with the charity and in 1996 was invited to become a Trustee on the Board of the Friends of Michael Sobell Hospice. Pam has also been involved in a lot of volunteer fund raising activities with the help of the trustees, including very successful Balls for the charity’s 21st and 25th Anniversaries at Moor Park Mansion. She has been very involved with the annual Light up a Life ceremony and helps out regularly in the Northwood shop. Her greatest
Can you help? We are always looking for volunteers to help us either at charity events or in our fundraising office, shops and warehouse. Some positions are ad hoc and others require more regular commitment. We are currently seeking volunteers for the following roles: Charity Shop volunteers – to help in our Northwood and Ruislip shops. Warehouse volunteers – to help drive our company van, collecting donated items and delivering them to our warehouse and our shops.
pleasure has been bringing together her two main interests – golf and the hospice – to set up the annual charity Golf Day at Sandy Lodge Golf Club in 2002. Not only has this event raised £250,000 for the charity to date, but it has also produced great camaraderie and awareness of the hospice amongst the local community. Pam says, “Michael Sobell Hospice is a very special place, a small oasis of peace and calm, and somewhere where quality of life is of utmost importance. It certainly isn’t a place of despair. I have been so blessed to be part of MSH for such a long time. Volunteering here has allowed me to do things that I would never have had the opportunity to do and meet people I would never have otherwise met. I look forward to continuing my interest and involvement with MSH for many more years”. Events volunteers – to help with our charity events throughout the year. ie. marshalling, store collections, registration desk help etc. Fundraising volunteers – to help out with event organisation ie. booking banners with the local council to promote our events, helping with promotion of events, accounts admin, marketing/social media and database. Our £50 challenge to local businesses Local businesses are being challenged to turn £50 into £thousands for Michael Sobell Hospice. At the challenge’s launch, each participating business will be given a crisp £50 to kick-start their fundraising activities. All the money raised will go towards patient care at Michael Sobell Hospice. The hospice will provide the initial seed investment and then it’s up to local businesses and their staff to put their entrepreneurial and money making skills to the test. The £50
Challenge is all about using your business skills and innovation to generate as much money for the hospice as possible – legally and ethically of course! Use the challenge as an exercise to boost staff morale, test your teamwork capability and imagination and, ultimately, have some fun! You could run fundraising events at work, hold a raffle or auction, set sporting challenges or organise social activities to raise money or even invest it on the stock market.
The team or company that raises the most money by October will be awarded the 2015 £50 Challenge Trophy in recognition of their efforts at a special reception.

Ladies in the Night Walk Friday 12 June at MSH, Northwood Registration at 8.30pm, walk at 10pm. Join us for our fifth annual sponsored stroll through the night this summer. This is the biggest event in our fundraising calendar when hundreds of our supporters dress up in pink and join in the party atmosphere. The event is open to ladies, gents and pooches. Choose to walk either 5½ or 9 miles route starting and ending at the hospice. Registration costs £20 before 5 June, or £25 afterwards or on the night and includes a t-shirt, fundraising pack and breakfast. This year we are offering teams of 10 people or more an earlybird discount of £10 per person if they sign up before the end of March. Sponsor a Nurse Appeal Could you help care for patients at Michael Sobell Hospice by sponsoring a nurse? For our nurses to continue to be the best and respond to the needs and wishes of all those who we care for requires constant commitment and investment. Our nurses are committed to the care of all those who turn to us for help – patients and families alike – and to pursue the values of the Hospice. But techniques in palliative care continue to improve requiring regular, professional training. New medicines and equipment are being developed which our nurses have to become familiar with before our patients can benefit. To be the best requires planning and regular investment. Today, please join forces with other supporters to collectively Sponsor a Nurse. To do this, we are asking you to consider making a regular Direct Debit donation, using the enclosed form if you received your newsletter as part of our March mailing, or via our website www.michaelsobellhospice.co.uk. Regular donations are predictable to help us plan ahead to invest in our nurses
and, being less costly to seek and process than one-off gifts, are particularly efficient ways to get money where we all want it to go – towards patient care. So please join others who have pledged regular gifts of a few pounds a month – maybe just the equivalent cost of a bottle or two of wine – to make sure that our Michael Sobell Hospice nurses continue to provide the best care and comfort possible for all of those affected by a life-limiting condition.
