Welcome Dear Friend Welcome to our autumn newsletter which we hope you will find informative and stimulating. Thank you to all of you who give freely in such different ways to help us to fund the hospice. We have to find £7 a minute to provide the care and support that we all want for our patients and their families. We could not do it without you. If you are new to MSH, maybe you would also consider helping by making a gift or by joining in a fundraising activity? People old and young, ask us about leaving a bequest to MSH for the benefit of those to come. These enquiries are extremely welcome as being remembered in a legacy is testament to our work and really helps us to safeguard our future. It is simple to do; details are on our website under the ‘Get Involved’ tab or call us on 01923 844434. Finally, please remember to visit our website regularly to keep up to date with all of our activities, including our brand new colourdash at Brunel University on 31 October.

Movers and Shakers Earlier this year we said goodbye to Pam Wright, our Macmillan Palliative Care Lecturer Practitioner, after 16 years at MSH. Good luck to Pam in her new role at Maggie’s Support Centre. We recently welcomed two new members to the education team – Maura St George as Assistant Macmillan Lecturer Practitioner in Palliative Care, and Sheila Small, Macmillan Lecturer Practitioner in Oncology. Also new to MSH is Dr Sarah Frearson (pictured above), Consultant in Palliative Medicine, who has been working as a palliative care specialist for 9 years. Her primary role is looking after the Day Centre patients but she also works in the In-Patient Unit. Dr Frearson told us; “The Day Centre at MSH is a very special place. It’s a relaxed, friendly and traditional environment for patients to come in and receive social and medical support. Being based on the Mount Vernon site means that we have access to all of the Cancer Centre facilities and support networks, which enables our patients to receive the best possible care”.

Going Greek Karen Williams, a recent inpatient at MSH, loved her holidays to Greece and was sad that her illness has prevented her from visiting the country for a tenth time. The nursing team at MSH wanted to do something special for Karen so decided that if she couldn’t go to Greece, then they would bring Greece to her! So in July, with the help of partner Allan, family and friends, the nurses secretly planned and organised a greek themed party in the summer house in the hospice gardens. The party was attended by over 40 family and friends who enjoyed greek food, music and ambience. Karen, pictured here with Carol Weston (nurse team leader), and the nurses even donned togas for the occasion. Karen, who is 56 with 2 children and 3 grandsons, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. She talked of her care at MSH, saying, “You would not have such great care anywhere else in the world. Each and everyone of the team at MSH is an angel, and they treat us all like princesses”. Karen was very excited about being featured in the newsletter but sadly as we go to press we have learnt that she has passed away. We send our condolences to her family and friends for the loss of a lovely lady.
Mayor chooses MSH for annual appeal We are delighted to announce that the new Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Catherine Dann, has chosen Michael Sobell Hospice to benefit from her 2014/15 Charity Appeal. Every year the Mayor chooses a charity from within the community to benefit from fundraising through their year of office. The Mayor officially launched her Charity Appeal at a reception in the Civic Centre on 6 August where she asked community groups, local businesses and educational partners to help her raise funds for the Appeal throughout the year. The Mayor also encourages local schools to support her charity appeal. The Mayor, who is joined in office by Mayoress Mrs Rita Kilroy, told us why she chose Michael Sobell Hospice as her charity : “Both the Mayoress and I have personal experience of the services Michael Sobell Hospice
Barclays is holding 3 quiz nights to support the Mayor’s Charity Appeal 2014/2015 on 18 November 2014, and 21 January and 18 March 2015. offers, and the comfort, help and support they provide both for patients and their families.” Each year, as part of the Mayor’s Charity Appeal, Barclays puts on its own fundraising events for the Mayor’s chosen charity and matches funds raised at many of the events. Nicholas Smith, Community and Events Manager at Barclays, said: “Our team is delighted to once again share our fundraising and event management skills and knowledge to a worthy charity to help maximise the amount raised for the Mayor’s Charity Appeal.” Melanie Burfitt, Director of Income Generation at MSH (pictured here with the Mayor and MSH Chairman Rod Lacey), said, “We are really excited that the Mayor has chosen to support us this year and look forward to working with her over this exciting year ahead.”

Investing in our people At Michael Sobell Hospice we are proud of our team of specialist staff who provide the best possible care, support and advice to our patients and their families. A range of internal and external training opportunities is offered to staff to help them keep them up-to-date with best practice in their areas. Recently MSH has helped to fund training for three staff to further their skills and knowledge for the benefit of patients and staff at MSH. Debbie Potter, Office Manager to the MSH Clinical Team, recently received funding for her CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership. She said “the course has provided me with the opportunity to challenge my skills in management practice. It has given me the confidence to implement change and contribute new ideas, which includes a project that involves writing local guidelines for the palliative care database to improve the quality and reliability of patient data at MSH. Dr Humaira Jamal recently
attended and presented at the 8th World Research Congress of the European Association for Palliative Medicine Conference (EAPC) in Spain. The conference is a collective of 56 associations in 32 countries worldwide with several hundred participants. Dr Jamal said “I went to cutting edge sessions on research on opioids (strong pain killers) in palliative care and have come back recharged with new ideas from the sessions and from exchanging ideas with international colleagues. Kate Ross, Staff Nurse in the MSH Day Centre, has received funding towards her degree in Palliative Nursing. She said; “The courses have developed me both personally and professionally and enabled me to deliver excellent care to MSH patients and relatives, whilst disseminating these skills within the team in improving practice and knowledge base.” All the above training was made possible thanks to grants made by the hospice charity.
Ursula Reeve, Lead Nurse at MSH, talks about recent changes in End of Life Care You may have seen media coverage this year about The Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP). The LCP was a documentation tool for health care professionals focusing on the needs a patient may have in the last few days/weeks of life. For example, highlighting that patients should be clean and comfortable, should not have unnecessary blood tests and ensuring that their spiritual and religious needs should be addressed etc. Whilst there was initial training and support at implementation of the LCP, this did not continue throughout the country and over time the principles of this document became lost in translation.
The LCP was criticised for putting people ‘on the pathway to death’ with no formal review of a patient’s condition. For example; where the LCP discussed hydration and nutrition, staff interpreted this as an order to stop offering food and diet, which was never the intention of the document. A further criticism was that there was no documented evidence of any discussions with patients or their families and that patients were being put on the pathway without consent. As a result of the controversy the LCP was withdrawn from the majority of health environments earlier this year. At MSH we are working on a
new form of documentation for care at the end of life, based this on the principles of end of life care as highlighted by the Leadership Alliance for the Care of Dying People (LACDP). Currently the trial is going well and evaluation of the document seems positive. Once we have a final version we will be rolling it out with a teaching programme and support. We hope that the new programme will enable people to have their final wishes understood and fulfilled, and a wellmanaged and peaceful death. If you would like to have more information about LACDP please go to www.nhsengland.nhs.uk

Lottery Thanks to all the wonderful supporters who raise funds and donate to our work, including those who are members of our weekly lottery draw. The hospice lottery partnership benefits six hospices including MSH. Income from our lottery continues to grow each year and is a significant part of our fundraising efforts, raising enough money to fund the Michael Sobell Hospice Day Centre for almost a year. Look out for Peter Tarbox who regularly visits the Mount Vernon hospital, local retail outlets and our events to promote the hospice lottery, which you can join for as little as £4.34 a month. Visit www.hospicelottery.org.uk to see how you could take part in the weekly draw, have the chance of winning a cash prize, and help the hospice. Superdraw 2014 was a great success and raised an incredible £44,000 shared equally between the lottery hospice partners. Thank you to all who entered and look out for details of our Winter Superdraw.
In March our Ruislip shop received a Mary Portas style revamp from the visual display team at John Lewis, Watford. Many thanks to Pearl Robson who arranged this, and the display ladies who worked their magic on the shop window and interior.

Our retail, warehouse and recycling activities continue to thrive. Did you know that thanks to your generous donations of unwanted clothing and other items, we have raised over £40,000 in the past twelve months just from recycling and eBay sales! This is in addition to all the money we have raised from donated items sold in our shops. This is a vital part of our fundraising activity so please continue to support us by donating your unwanted items - either drop off at our shops, or if you have a large amount, please call 01923 844152 to arrange for one of our friendly drivers to collect from your home, office or place of work. To see whether an item is suitable for donation, please see our website www.michaelsobellhospice.co.uk call David Mosely on 01923 844606 for advice. v

Thank you
to our fantastic fundraisers!
Six marathons in the desert... good idea, or bad idea? In April Patrick Hughes and his friend Paul Gooding took on The Marathon des Sables. This awe inspiring challenge involved running six Marathons in six days in the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Patrick and Paul have raised an amazing £13,260 for MSH, one of three charities they chose to support because Patrick’s late father was cared for here. Here is Patrick’s account of his gruelling challenge: “After many years of yearning I finally bit the bullet in 2012 and applied to run my ‘Everest’, or as the organisers put it, ‘the toughest race on earth’. Having gradually upped the ante and taken on more extreme challenges as we have advanced in years, my triathlon buddy Paul and I decided to enter the Marathon des
Sables because we thought it would be a fantastic challenge and a great one to raise sponsorship for. Training was difficult as all we knew of the event was that it would require miles and miles of running in the sand, wearing lots of clothes, and carrying a 10kg rucksack. The UK contingent was by far the biggest with around 376 participants out of 1,045 participants from 44 different countries. The event was over some of the toughest dunes in Morocco – 15 km on Day 1 alone – up mountains in the heat, with the temperature peaking at 52°C on Day 2. For me the first three days were way ahead of expectations, with me placed at number 323. However, a foot infection and bad pain on Day 4 meant it became a personal battle
with my demons just to finish. The long stage that I expected to do in 14-15hrs took me a mind numbing 28hrs. On Day 6, I saw the finish line, hugged a Frenchman and heard for the last time’Happy’ by Pharrell Williams – now I hate that song!! OK, so job done. I have conquered my ‘Everest’ and although the desert is a truly wonderful place, I feel no need to go back! What I will say is that all those people who have supported our efforts are very much the stars of this whole escapade. We are both truly humbled by their generosity and would like to thank them very much. If you would like to take on a similar fundraising challenge to this, or even something on a smaller scale, check our website for ideas or call Ophelia on 01923 844829.
Well done 10K Runners! Congratulations and thank you to all those who took part in the British 10k London Run in July in aid of MSH. Pictured left is the Top Flight team who raised £3,065 in memory of their friend and colleague Andy Williams

Volunteers
Every issue we feature volunteers who give their time to Michael Sobell Hospice
Beverley Garber is a retired playgroup leader, married with 2 children and twin granddaughters. When she is not singing in a local choir or looking after her grandchildren, Beverley volunteers for Michael Sobell Hospice. We caught up with her recently to hear about her fantastic fundraising How did you get involved with MSH? I came to one of your fundraising events and got chatting to the volunteer organiser at the event. My mum died of cancer 6 years ago and I wanted to do some fundraising for a cancer related charity. Tell us about the work you have done for MSH I have been volunteering for 6 years now. I have organised seven events for MSH – four vintage events, an Indulgence Event and two Vintazia events at the Barn in Ruislip. In total I have raised over £29,000. What is your secret for organising a successful event? Networking – I try never to forget a face or a name and I keep a big book full of my contacts and notes. Why do you like volunteering? I’m a workaholic, I can’t bear to sit still and I like to fill my time. I get so much pleasure from organising the events and seeing people enjoying themselves whilst raising money for a good cause.
New Voluntary Services Officer Victoria Mansell has joined the fundraising office as our new Voluntary Services Officer. With a background in HR and recruitment, Victoria recruits and supports our volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering at MSH in any capacity, whether in our shops, at our events or in our fundraising office, please give her a call on 01923 844606.
What would you say to anyone considering volunteering for us? MSH is a lovely place to volunteer. Lots of people think hospices are scary, sad places where people go to die, but MSH is not like that. In fact the atmosphere is very cheerful, the staff are lovely and people come for respite and day care. There are lots of different ways you can volunteer at MSH either in the hospice itself, in the garden, in the shops, or in the fundraising department – there is something for everyone and it’s very rewarding. If anyone is interested in helping Beverley with her fundraising events, making cakes for events or even donating an item to the gift cabinet she looks after in the hospice, please contact her via email on bgarber@michaelsobellhospice.co.uk
Volunteer Vacancies We are looking for more volunteer van drivers to help with our collection service, and volunteers for our shops. Please call Victoria Mansell on 01923 844152 for more info. We also urgently need people as store collectors on the following dates - Tesco Pinner Green on Saturday 6 December and Tesco Rickmansworth on Friday 19 December. Please call Ophelia on 01923 844829 if you can help. Thank you.
Key fact 4
The beautiful gardens at the hospice are looked after by a team of volunteer gardeners who come to help every Tuesday come rain or shine

In March staff from GlaxoSmithKline at Stockley Park organised an onsite appeal for donated goods which they sold at their Spring Sale at MSH. The event raised over £1,300 and was part of the GSK Orange Day initiative which encourages each GSK employee to give up one working day a year to volunteer with a local community project. Well done to everyone involved!
Calling all Companies Support from local businesses is vital to Michael Sobell Hospice. With recent news of the UK’s recovering economic performance, there’s never been a better time to show you care about the local community, and bring your employees together to support a good cause. If your company would like to become a corporate supporter, please contact Geraint on 01923 844550 or visit the Get Involved section of our website.
Could your company organise a collection day or sale of unwanted goods in aid of MSH? Contact Geraint on 01923 844550.
Students get creative and ‘Max the Cash’ for MSH Well done to the students of Uxbridge College who raised £1,074 in our ‘Max the Cash’ enterprise scheme. Fifteen teams of students were given the task of setting up businesses to raise funds for MSH with £750 seed money provided by Basepoint in Eastcote. The winning team raised £250 by activities including car washing and selling ice cream. Eva Christodoulou from Basepoint said “Basepoint is extremely happy to match the total money raised through our ‘Max the Cash’ scheme. Michael Sobell Hospice is a wonderful place and it gives us great pleasure to be involved with the charity. Well done to all the students at Uxbridge College for all their hard work and enthusiasm.” Retail students at Uxbridge
College also organised a ‘Shift it and Gift it’ event, selling unwanted items and raising £261.50. Well done to everyone involved.
Thanks to the following organisations for their support: • JGA Group, Eastcote for raising £300 in a company raffle and supporting our Comedy Night in May. (Pictured right is Geraint Hughes of MSH with Merle Blackburn, JGA’s Team Leader for Career Services, receiving the raffle proceeds.) • Beaverbrooks the Jewellers in Watford who nominated MSH for an award of £360 • Sun Life Financial of Canada for their generous donation • Sainsbury’s Local Hayes for adopting MSH v
