in order to be more accessible and dense. VISION FOR THE PROJECT The aim is to visualize the identity of Mariestad and make use of the qualities that already exist. The city is characterized by its connection between the water and the city center. The aim is to enhance the cultural heritage and the history of the city. Mariestad is an active city with a variation of activities, it is easy to access cultural life. Complementing the important axis of the city with new designed corridors will provide the possibility to interact and experience the already existing qualities of the city. The urban space is redesigned in order to be more accessible and dense. WHAT New interventions consider graduated levels of space from public to private, both in the horizontal and the vertical dimension. A combination of functions will connect the built environment with the street, and it will include the hidden places in a new network, hierarchicaly ordered. Sunlight, ventilation, and the respect for privacy in a dense environment are priorities of the design. Social sustainability is highly considered in order to achieve a diverse, connected and democratic community, which will set the ground for a future development.

Fish square

1895

The square has been the marketplace for the fish market since 1950. Today it is empty. Before the city fire 1895 there where two plots that hosted tannery. The aim is to take advantage of the waterfront and make space for a fishmarket and other activities both winter and summer.

A suitable program for this site could be:

- Fishmarket - Restaurant - a place for small associations - exhibitionplace viewing the lake - extention of Dacapo ( A specialist program for koncervation of buildings)

14

Strenghts

Strategies

- Good location in the water front - Close to the esplanade and the citycenter - An historical place for fishmarket

- By activating the waterfront will give new importance to the site and create an interesting connection between water in the city center.

Weaknesses - Disconnected to the center - Windy - No direct contact with the waterfront

- By bringing new functions to the place will strenghten public life in the city. - By designing a cultural center will create an entrance from the water.

AteljĂŠ

Section 1:100

AteljĂŠ The aim is to create a descret intervention that suit in the nature. These small boxes together with the fishsquare will frame the entrance to Mariestad, from the water. This intervention will become an extencion from the esplanade and the fishsquare that will create a watersquare where it is possible to swim in the summer and ice skating in the winter. The old prison will be transformed into an hostel, with a common kitchen for artists that rent the ateljĂŠs.

Esplanade

Strenghts

Strategies

The esplanade is the central street and space in the city that start from the waterfront and ends up in the New Square.

Central location Green corridor in the city Cultural herritage

- By connecting the esplanade to the waterfront and closing the old square, will clarify the citystructure.

The aim is to take advantage of the waterfront and make the water visible trough the city and use the esplanade as an attractive link between important locations.

A suitable program for this site could be: - A waterlane that separates the bikes from the pedestians

Weaknesses Lack of connection to the water and the rail way station Lack of public life lack of accessibility

- By clarifying the esplanade with a clear water lane that separates the pedestrians from the bikes, will srenghten the connection and accessibility from the waterfront to the rail way station and to Karlsholme. - By creating a mixed use with housing and public functions in the Old square will bring more people to the site.

- A cafĂŠ facing the esplanade from the old square

Old square

Strenghts

Strategy

The old square has an historical importance for the city but is today used as park places. The site is surrounded by protected buildings.

- Central location - Historical values - Close to the water

- By defining the space with housing and public facilities will bring life to the square, visualize the qualities of the site and strenghten the hierarcy in the cityplan.

By framing the square and important buildings with new build environment it is possible to activate and give new importance to the space. By redesigning the square will give an interesting public space with view to the esplanade. By closing the square creates a unique importance to the New square. By densifying with residential buildings will bring more people and create a good mix between private and public spaces.

A suitable program for this site could be: - Housing - CafĂŠ - square - semiprivate facilities for housing

Weeknesses - Parking - Sprawled center - Out of scale

New square

Strengths

Strategies

The New square is the place for commerce. By closing the old square and concentrate the commerce to one site will clarify the city structure and create a lively place. A greenhouse with a covered market that can open up in the square will frame the space. The square is designed to take care of rainwater. When there is no water the square becomes a skate park and brings young people to the site.

- Central location - High point - Market place

- By using the natural slopes, the New Square could be a place to collect rainwater and distrubute to the lake along the new accesses.

Weeknesses

- By closing the old square will give more importance to the New square.

A suitable program for this site could be: - Green house (working as a market) - commerce - skate park

22

- Big undefined place with few activities - Surrounded by unwelcoming buildings

- By defining the square, giving more activities and make it more accessible will bring more people to the site and create a lively meetingplace.

Rail way station

Rail way station

Strengths

Strategy

The rail way station has an historical value and is an important symbol for the city.

- Historical value - Important symbol - Close to city center and water

By concentrating the services to one place with covered waiting places will clarify the orientation. The design will visualize the rail way station. New housing area along Nygatan will create a clear line to the water.

A suitable program for this site could be: - Officies - Housing - Lokal that concentrate all services connected to the rail way station

Weaknesses - Services are spread out - Small waiting place - Undefined waiting place outside

Karlsholme

Karlsholme

Strengths

Strategy

The park of Karlsholme has a strategic location, close to the city center and to the water, with a great potential to become a stronger meeting place. Today it is a place for dance, koncerts, exhibitions, markets and meetings. The most important for this place is to find an holistic connection to Karlsholme. Vegetation could strenghten the presens of water. In order to redesign the place with respect for the cultural heritage, old paths and trees are important.

- Good location - Historical value - Potential place for activities and meetings - Uses today for dance, concerts, markets and meetings

By connecting Nygatan with the new path of exhibition shelters and a waterline will strenghsten the access and visualize the nature and cultural heritage.

A suitable program for this site could be:

- Has lost its old importance - Disconnected to the center

Small interventions of exhibition shelter

Stakeholders

M

1.Housing along Nygatan

- The first step in the transformation for Mariestad will be new housing along Nygatan. Its location close to the water and the city center will attract people.

2.Water system

- The next phase will be to create a water system along Nygatan starting from the New Square will lead the rainwater out to the lake. The water system is connected to each new house.

3.Redesign the old square 4.Water system 5.Design the waterfront 6.Cultural center

- The next phase will be to redesign the old square into housing and public functions inside and outside. New housing will bring more people and businesses could establish, a cafĂŠ connected to the new public space and the esplanade. - The next phase will be to continue with the water system from the New Square until the waterfront, connected to the new building in the old Square. - In order to activate the already existing potential and strengthen the identity the next step will be to activate the waterfront, make it possible to swim in the summer and ice skating in the winter. The fish market can have temporary stand until someone wants to invest in a cultural building with a fish restaurant. - After activating and connecting the waterfront with the city center and the train station it is now possible to invest in the cultural center with fish restaurant, exhibition space, locals for small businesses and new locals for new directions for Dacapo (expanding with a program that will focus on the old way of buildings, restauration)

7.AteljĂŠs

- The new attractive waterfront will bring people and artists. The next step will be to create small art studios in front of the old prison. These could be rented during the year.

8.Redefine old prison

- The Old prison will be transformed into an hostel where there will be a common kitchen for the artists that rent the art studios. This will strengthen the identity of Mariestad.

9.Rebuild the New square 10. Office building 30

- The next step will be to rebuild the New Square, starting with a greenhouse that can host the market. - The new buildings in the New square are designed to host the shops that are placed in in Nygatan. This place will instead be transformed to officies.
