CHED MYERS
HEBER M. BROWN
FEATURED IDEALIST
FEATURED IDEALIST
CLOSING PREACHER
René August is a veteran of the anti-apartheid movement and an Anglican priest. She also serves as a reconciliation trainer with The Warehouse, a worshiping community organization in Cape Town, South Africa. The Warehouse walks alongside churches as they seek to respond to the issues of poverty, injustice, and division in a city that struggles with inequality. With a love for the local church and a desire to end the exploitation of the planet and its people, René is passionate about finding innovative ways to use sacred texts to live more faithfully in God’s story of love.
Ched Myers is an activist theologian who has worked in social change movements for 40 years. With a degree in New Testament Studies, as a popular educator he animates scripture and issues of peace and justice. He has authored over 100 articles and eight books. Ched is adjunct faculty at St. Andrew’s College in Saskatoon, SK, and has taught at seminaries around the world. He has worked with a variety of social justice organizations, and has co-founded collaborative projects such as the Word and World School and the Center and Library for the Bible and Social Justice. With his partner Elaine Enns, a restorative justice theologian/ practitioner, they mentor young faith and justice leaders, live in southern California and co-direct Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministries.
Heber M. Brown, III is senior pastor of Pleasant Hope Baptist Church in Baltimore and a team leader of Baltimore United for Change—a coalition of activists and grassroots organizations working for social justice. He is the founder of Orita’s Cross Freedom School and co-architect of the Black Church Food Security Network. He’s a graduate of Morgan State University, Virginia Union University (MDiv) and Wesley Theological Seminary (DMin).

TABLE OF CONTENTS
IDEALABS THE GOOD IS IN THE LAND OF THE LIVING NKOSI GOLA & RENÉ AUGUST // Conference Room 3 How might church and Christian leaders respond to the issues of poverty, injustice, and division in communities that struggle with inequality? Participants in this lab will explore faith-rooted resistance as the expression of the goodness of God in death-dealing realities.
A BLACK CHURCH FOOD SECURITY NETWORK: A PATHWAY TO HEALTH, WEALTH & POWER HEBER M. BROWN // Conference Room 4 Participants will be provided background information and context to the impetus, development, challenges and current status of the Black Church Food Security Network in Baltimore, Maryland. We’ll explore some of the religious, social, political, and economic implications of this initiative which is led by those most directly affected by food insecurity in the city.
DISMANTLING THE CRADLE TO PRISON PIPELINE RAHIM BUFORD & JANET WOLF // Conference Room 5 Mass incarceration is fueled by the criminalization of black and brown bodies, targeting children in impoverished communities of color who become victims of the “Cradle to Prison Pipeline” (juvenile offenders who become adult prisoners). Survivors of this system come home to an unwelcoming community that practices “felonism” or legal discrimination against “formerly incarcerated” citizens. Has the church been complicit by its silence? What might it mean for faith communities to listen to and learn from those who have been targeted by and caught in this pipeline? How might that redefine ministry?
DISCOVERING GOD’S PRESENCE & RE-IMAGINING SPACES FOR COMMUNITY LIFE STEVEN CHAPPARO // Conference Room A What would it look like for spiritual and social entrepreneurs to create intentional space in the community beyond the four walls of the church to meet the needs of the city and the church? This Idea Lab will explore principles and case studies found at the intersection of faith, design and entrepreneurship which help to bring Shalom to our neighborhoods and cities.
8
NONVIOLENCE & RECONCILIATION: THE MARTIAL ART OF CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION KAZU HAGA // Conference Room 6 Conflict is universal and unavoidable. In the home, the workplace and throughout society, no one can get through a single day without experiencing it. Yet the art of moving through conflict is rarely studied. Things like arguing and violence are not forms of conflict. They are what happens as a result of mismanaging conflict. Nonviolence is the art of resisting injustice, transforming violence and confronting conflict in ways that lead toward reconciliation rather than violence. This Idea Lab will explore how nonviolence is being applied in contexts as diverse as prisons to social justice movements to solve problems large and small.
TURNING GOOD IDEAS INTO IDEAS FOR GOOD STEPHEN LEWIS // Conference Room B The world’s complex problems need creative solutions to help shape a hopeful future. Institutions matter if we want to solve big problems of the world. While Christian leaders have typically turned to social justice to address these issues, we also need new social ventures that innovatively integrate sacred and marketplace wisdom into entrepreneurial endeavors to create the world anew. Are you interested in working at the intersection of faith and social enterprise? How do you scale your ideas for ministry as a social enterprise to cultivate God’s healing of the world? Join me for an interactive exploration of this topic and how you might do good in the world.
LIBERATORS IN OUR MIDST: A SURVIVOR-LED TRAJECTORY OF LEADERSHIP NIKOLE LIM // Conference Room 7 Isaiah 61 illustrates a trajectory of leadership where Christ delivers the oppressed into an experience of liberation, healing and transformation. The fruit of their transformation is an outpouring of justice which will rebuild, restore and renew-bringing liberation to generations devastated by violence. By instating a renewed cycle of liberation, the oppressed become the most powerful liberators in our midst-inviting us to experience a greater sense of freedom within ourselves. This Idea Lab reflects on the trajectory of leadership emphasized in Isaiah 61, shares case studies on this survivor-led approach to holistic liberation and discusses methods on how we can create platforms and opportunities for the oppressed to lead us and our communities into liberation.
IDEALABS 9
IDEALABS IMMIGRATION, SANCTUARY AND CHRISTIAN WITNESS ALEXIA SALVATIERRA // Conference Room 8 Our immigration system is complex. It is also ineffective, illogical and profoundly inhumane. There are over 92 Bible passages calling us to welcome the stranger. How can we do that effectively in the face of the current wave of violations of immigrants’ civil and human rights?
NEIGHBORHOOD ECONOMICS: WHY COMMUNITY WEALTH SHOULD BE OUR GOAL AND HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN TIM SOERENS // Conference Room C One of the greatest indicators of neighborhood revitalization is a growing sense of agency among all of the residents of a particular area. A fascinating movement is underway that seeks to transform neighborhoods by taking an entrepreneurial approach to do good while also generating capital with new tools. This Idea Lab will guide you into the movement of local social entrepreneurship and provide practical steps for how to raise capital for your next venture, or lead your church community toward this vision.
