FGCU Showcases Native Art

The Galleries at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) presents ‘Long, Long, River: Tradition and Expansion of Native Art,’ January 9-30. An opening reception will be held January 9, 6-8pm. Prior to the reception, at 5pm, curators Jessica Osceola and Anica Sturdivant will host a Gallery Talk. There will also be two performances, at 5 & 7pm. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public, as are the performances, but due to limited seating, reservations are required for the shows.

‘Long, Long River: Tradition and Expansion in Native Art’ offers visitors the opportunity to experience the artistic vision of Native Americans connected to the Everglades.

When the exhibition was conceived, the curators began seeking works by Natives, members of the Seminole tribe or of Seminole extraction who were working in a contemporary vein. They quickly realized that sustaining traditional methods and aesthetics were a contemporary issue for many Native artists. The exhibition grew from there to incorporate poet and painter Elgin Jumper, documentarian Samuel Tommie, storyteller and photographer Gordon Oliver Wareham, painter

James Osceola, painter and sculptor LeRoy “Henehayo” Osceola, iconic Seminole artist Noah Billie, activist oriented ceramist and sculptor Jessica Osceola, and pop inspired artist Daniel McCoy.

These are a group of Native artists choosing their own path in self-representation, building bridges between the traditional identity of one world and the ever changing modern world.

The artists in the exhibition work to teach the younger generations of Seminoles traditional skills to ensure that their language and oral histories are not lost to time and American popular culture.

This special exhibition unites with performances to showcase a night of live-action painting, music, storytelling, and more. Performances by Samuel Tommie, Oliver Wareham, and Elgin Jumper will be held in FGCU TheatreLab.

The FGCU Art Gallery is located inside the Arts Complex on FGCU’s main campus, 10501 FGCU Blvd. S., off Ben Hill Griffin Rd., east of I-75 in Fort Myers. Parking is available in Lot 7 for gallery visitors; parking passes are available at the Information Booth located at the University’s entrance.

LEGO ® Sculptures in the Naples Botanical Garden

Naples Botanical Garden will host LEGO ® Sculptures in the Garden, February 14-May 11.

The traveling exhibit displays nature-inspired LEGO ® sculptures throughout the Garden. Each piece is designed and created by Sean Kenney, the world’s first LEGO ® certified professional, using nearly 500,000 LEGO ® bricks. Kenney, one of only 13 LEGO ® certified professionals, will be on hand for opening day festivities. A LEGO ® sculpture contest is planned for March 8.

The exhibit highlights and promotes the importance of ecosystems and how all living things are connected. It features 14 individual displays including 27 sculptures built with LEGO ® bricks, including a bumblebee, hummingbird, fox, rabbit, bison, lily pads, and a garden worker. Sculptures range in size from six inches to almost eight feet. .

from nearly half-a-million LEGO ® bricks, this spring exhibit of larger-than-life sculptures represents the complex and amazing network that interconnects all living things. “Just as in nature and our gardens here, the LEGO ® bricks connect to create something fun, colorful and intricate,” says Brian Holley, Executive Director of Naples Botanical Garden. “Each brick relies on the next to build a connected system, relying on each other.”

Naples Botanical Garden is a 170-acre garden that features the plants and cultures of the tropics and subtropics between the latitudes of 26 o North and 26 o South, including Brazil, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and Florida. In addition, there is a hands-on interactive Children’s Garden, along with 90 acres of beautifully restored natural habitats, walking trails and a Butterfly Garden.

Lakes Parks Gets Medieval

The Riverdale Kiwanis will host their annual Medieval Faire the weekends of January 11 & 12 and 18 & 19 at Lakes Regional Park in Fort Myers. The twoweekend event is expected to draw over 15,000 attendees. The Faire will feature jousting, live chess matches, live sword fighting, a royal court, children’s games and rides, jugglers, magicians, minstrels, period food and medieval themed merchants. Entertainment will be provided by touring medieval faire professionals on eight stages. Jousting is scheduled for 11am and 12:45 & 3:15pm on center field. Live chess matches are at 12 & 4.30pm.

All profits from the Medieval Faire go to the Kiwanis of Riverdale Foundation Fund to support local programs including thanksgiving baskets for the needy, Christmas dinners, Buckingham Exception School, Orange River Elementary,

Sunshine Elementary, school grants and scholarships. The Riverdale Kiwanis club is currently seeking volunteers to help set up, especially those with carpentry or construction skills. Sanibel Music Fest Returns for 26th Year

The Sanibel Music Festival is celebrating its 28th season this year, again presenting concerts by world-renowned musicians Tuesdays & Saturdays in March.

Rare Photos of SWFL at the Marco Island Museum

The Marco Island Historical Museum will host ‘Enchantments: The Photographic Adventures of

Julian Dimock, 1904-1913,’ a collection of long-lost historic and rare black & white photographs, January 2-March 29.

In the first decade of the 20th century, Julian Dimock and his father traveled throughout southwest Florida photographing the land, the people and the waterways. The former Wall Street moguls turned gentlemen explorers published hundreds of articles documenting their journeys in Harper’s, Field & Stream, and other periodicals, introducing Americans to the exotic world of the Florida Everglades and its inhabitants.

From their base camp in the then-undeveloped outpost of Marco Island, the Dimocks trekked through the swamps and savannahs of southwest Florida, canoeing the Ten Thousand Islands, the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp. They traveled overland to reach hidden places, including Deep Lake Plantation, a historic citrus grove, Henderson Creek, and Chatham Bend, the island home of the notorious killer Edgar Watson. These reproductions from original glass negatives –rediscovered in 1978, nearly half a century after Dimock donated his collection to the American

Museum of Natural History –preserve a rare and beautiful slice of American history.

There will be an opening wine & cheese reception, which is free and open to the public, on January 7, 5-7pm. Following the reception, at 7pm, Lee Trust for Historic Preservation will host a free presentation about the exhibit by archeologist and author, Dr. Jerald Milanich, Professor Emeritus of the Florida Museum of Natural History, and curator of the exhibit.

Rookery Bay Hosts Nature Festival

The Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is hosting their 10th annual Southwest Florida nature Festival, the weekend of January 17-19. Guests can explore the local environment through almost 40 guided field trips to 20 wildlife hot spots around Southwest Florida as well as lectures at the Rookery Bay Environmental

Julian Dimock’s photographs, rediscovered 36 years ago, chronicle life in Southwest Florida more than 100 years ago.

Learning Center. Field trips, including birding walks, buggy rides and boat tours, are offered in conjunction with partners such as Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Big Cypress National Preserve and Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Reservation are required for all guided field trips. Educational lectures are planned throughout the day on Saturday & Sunday

There are three types of field trips planned for January 17-19: Birding (identification and biology of birds, Wildlife (focus on the wildlife, habitat and ecology of the area) and Specialty (focusing on a specialized wildlife or habitat). Admission to the Learning Center is free on Friday, January 17. The Center is closed on Sunday, January 19.

Art on the Riverfront

Once again this year, ArtFest Fort Myers, the acclaimed juried outdoor fine art festival, brings 200 fine art and fine craftspeople to the downtown riverfront the weekend of January 1-February 2.

Artists will be personally displaying sculpture, painting, ceramics, photography, drawing, digital, mixed media, ceramics, printmaking, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, wearable fiber and wood.

The festival also boasts the largest high school art exhibit and competition in South Florida as well as free interactive art and crafts activities for children.

There will also be performances by Southwest Florida Symphony, Gulfcoast Music School, GulfShore Ballet, Laboratory Theater Puppet Show, and Kellyn Celtic Arts Irish Dance Academy.

‘New Media’

The Ringling continues its celebration of contemporary art and performance, ‘nowHERE:

Finding Our Way in the 21st Century,’ with ‘R. Luke DuBois –Now,’ the first solo gallery exhibition for the ‘new media’ artist, and it will feature the debut of a video work that highlights Sarasota’s circus legacy. DuBois combines film making, computer data and original music into his works.

‘R. Luke DuBois- Now’ will be on view January 31-May 4 in the galleries of The Ringling Museum of Art’s Ulla R. and Arthur F. Searing Wing.

‘R. Luke DuBois – Now’ will also include a series of gallery performances by new media artists. The first will feature Lesley Flanigan on February 27 performing ‘Bioluminescence,’ featuring her voice remixed by DuBois in a visual and audio presentation.

Violinist Todd Reynolds will join DuBois for ‘Moments of Inertia’ on April 1, as well as selections from collaborations with DuBois.

Composer Bora Yoon and Dubois present ‘Phonation’ on May 1, a multi-instrumental performance combined with camera-based projections.

The exhibition gallery performances start at 6:30pm.

As part of the ‘nowHERE’ series, The Ringling is presenting ‘New Stages,’ concerts and performances in the Historic Asolo Theater. Shows are at 7:30pm.

Meklit Hadero, an Ethiopianborn cabaret singer know for her blend of jazz, soul and folk music, kicks off the series January 23.

On February 6-8, Lostwax Multimedia Dance performs ‘Particular,’ a blend of ballet, hiphop, jazz and modern dance with computer graphic projections produced by R. Luke DuBois.

BIG ARTS invites artists for submissions for the juried exhibit, Based on Books. An artist may submit one or two entries for consideration

Entries may be original two or three dimensional works in any media, but must incorporate the theme of books, such as elements from outside or inside books. Artwork may incorporate book titles, themes, characters, locations, action, reaction, travel, poetry, classic, comic, fantasy, fiction, history, mystery, page, or spine. All artwork must be available for sale and must be ready for proper hanging and display.

Artwork must not have been previously shown at BIG ARTS. Mechanically produced reproductions are not allowed, nor are giclee prints or copies.

All entries must be submitted for review to BIG ARTS between 9 a.m. and noon on Friday, January 17, 9am-12pm. There is an entry fee.

The ‘Based on Books’ exhibit will be free and open to the public for viewing in Phillips Gallery, January 20-February 26. Awards will be announced during the artists opening reception January 31, 5:30-7pm. Recpetion is free and open to the public to attend.

The inaugural ‘Ding’ DarlingTheodore Cross High School Photography Contest Invites high school students in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Glades, and Hendry counties to enter for prizes that include a Canon digital SLR camera package, chartered class trips to the ‘Ding’ Darling National

Wildlife Refuge and copies of Waterbirds: Portraits and Anecdotes from Birding Adventures by contest namesake, the late Theodore Cross.

Cross, who lived part-time on Sanibel Island and has family still living here, marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; advised the Johnson and Nixon administrations on anti-poverty programs; wrote the influential book Black Capitalism, among others; played a prominent role in President Obama’s election; and created Birders United -- a birding website that ranked legislators according to their record of bird protection support. The Theodore Cross Family Charitable Foundation has made this contest pssoble with a generous grant to the ‘Ding’ Darling Wildlife Society - Friends of the Refuge (DDWS).

High School students, grades 9-12, attending schools in Lee, Collier, Hendry, and Charlotte counties, are asked to submit digital images taken with any camera, including smartphones, of nature and/or wildlife in the

open outdoors, shot from any outdoor venue. A writing component to the contest requires entrants grades 9-12 to submit a 100-word description of the ‘moment’ captured and how it reflects what nature and wildlife mean to the photographer. olorful sunsets of orange and blue coupled with the peaceful sound of water slapping against sand have always attracted artists to Sanibel and Captiva islands. In 1979, a like-minded group spearheaded by Pete Smith, Polly Matsumoto, George Campbell, and Martin Grassgreen formed the Barrier Island Group for the Arts (BIG ARTS). Until 1987, with no formal building, the group held concerts on the beach, classes at the Sanibel Community House and used local galleries to display members’ works. As their reputation grew, residents and tourists alike flocked to their different events. It became obvious that BIG ARTS needed their own home.

In 1987, after the City of Sanibel agreed to provide land, Smith and Grassgreen were able to convince builder Scott Naumann to donate one of the original Colony Resort duplexes slated for demolition. Backed by a cadre of dedicated islanders, the group raised the $75,000 necessary to move the building to its present site on Dunlop Road. Gifting the building back to the City and renaming it ‘the Founders Gallery,’ BIG ARTS began their first season of concerts, classes, discussion groups, and juried art shows. The larger events were held on an outside deck.

Community response was so overwhelming that in 1990 fund raising efforts began for an addition. This need became even more apparent during a Christmas cold snap that year when Carrie Lund Productions was forced to cancel four shows and 85-year-old Carnegie Hall pianist Art Hodes had to perform on the outside deck in frigid conditions.

Lavern and Bill Phillips, members of the group since 1985, were responsible for raising the money needed to build this new wing, named the Phillips Gallery in their honor. Bill, a retired CEO, became treasurer and Lavern, the consummate volunteer, known for her fund raising abilities, led the organization as President.

Under Lavern’s tutelage, this new 150-seat gallery housed a myriad of different programs. Locals could enjoy watching a ballet, listen to a jazz concert or learn how to paint with water colors. BIG ARTS, run mostly by volunteers, became so successful that less than five years later another expansion was necessary.

In 1996, following the plans of architect Joe St. Cyr, Harvey Schein and others were able to generate the $750,000 needed for the West Wing Expansion, later named Schein Hall. With its auditorium, classrooms and art studios, the hall is now the center of the group’s activities. Phillips Gallery is still noted for its wonderful local art displays and juried art shows.

As BIG ARTS celebrates its 35th Anniversary in 2014, current President Don Rice believes the organization once again has needs. “In order to fulfill our cultural commitment to the community, we need to expand our educational facilities,” states Rice. However, at their present location on Dunlop, sandwiched between the Sanibel Historical Museum & Village and Sanibel City Hall, there is no room available. Realizing this a few years ago, the BIG ARTS board started brainstorming for a solution. It became evident that updating Schein Hall would be too costly given the changes in the city’s building codes. But then another idea was floated by the newly elected president.

One night, while Don was a volunteer server pouring wine at a Kiwanis function on Sanibel, he was paired with City Manager Judy Zimomra. “Sanibel’s still a small town, and we got to talking,” laughs Rice. He learned about a master plan for a Civic Core Campus encompassing BIG ARTS, Sanibel Historical Museum &

illage, Town Hall, Sanibel Community House, and the Herb Strauss Theater. Zimomra wondered if a larger site farther down Dunlop could be used to complete the concept while fulfilling BIG ARTS’ needs.

That idea started the ball rolling and before long special workshops were set up for all interested parties. A proposed master plan was drawn up and presented to the City Council in November. “So far,” says Rice, “the idea has been welcomed by the

Once approved and properly permitted, their new campus, built on city land adjacent to the recycling plant, will include a theater/arts building and additional rooms and classrooms for their Life Long Learning Center. If these initial plans move forward, the present BIG ARTS complex will be torn down and turned into green space. The current building housing the Herb Strauss Theater may also be scheduled for demolition and be replaced with a Black Box Theater within the new complex.

The Civic Core will be a public/private partnership with BIG ARTS mounting a capital campaign so as not to incur any debt. When will all this happen?

Rice expects that once the design is completed and the project approved, the lights should be lit for events in the new performance hall within 36 months

Don Rice is typical of the hundreds of volunteers who have made BIG ARTS special during the past 35 years. As a former business executive, Rice worked with many non-profit organizations and was a member of many boards and environmental groups. In 2004, he and his wife Joyce retired to Sanibel. Not one to be idle long, Rice joined the BIG ARTS family as a volunteer. “I flipped hamburgers at fundraisers and parked cars,” he jokes. Then he was asked to join the board and this past year became President.

According to Rice, things changed dramatically for BIG ARTS when it acquired the Herb Strauss Theater in 2010-11. The professionals and volunteers at Herb Strauss blended perfectly with BIG ARTS, which before this acquisition was run almost exclusively by volunteers and a staff of four or five. Now the staff numbers sixteen. “There’s no way we could run all our programs today without our staff,” Rice concedes. But it’s the volunteers who come up with most of the ideas. Former President Chuck Bonzer, for example, initiated the very successful Winter Academy seminars, digital projection for live streaming and launch of the Community Players.

Rice is very excited about this new BIG ARTS campus set within an integrated civic core idea. He likes to remind residents of the important part a complex like BIG ARTS plays in the life of the community. Its ability to educate and stimulate residents and visitors is critical to the vitality of Sanibel and Captiva.

HE FLORIDA EVERGLADES are revered worldwide as a pristine slice of nature and an important part of the ecosystem. While the majority of us are busy posting sunset pictures on Facebook with our smartphones, capturing the essence of this majestic landscape might best be left to the pros.

Enter Marco Island-based artist Jo-ann Sanborn, celebrating 20 years of portraying the Everglades on canvas for the world to enjoy. I recently stopped by her Sunshine Studios gallery, located in the upscale Esplanade shopping center, and felt like nature’s simple beauty had just come alive inside her modestly sized space.

“It’s a great landscape, I’m not sick of it yet,” relates Jo-ann of her subject matter, “The light is fabulous, and it changes. There’s always something new to see and discover, and try to interpret. She continues, “I think people generally are drawn to water. You have the beautiful sky to reflect and the pattern of the trees.”

Upon entering her studio you might feel as though you’ve stepped onto an Everglades marsh trail, given the array of landscapes adorning the walls. From grassy prairies to marshlands dotted with palms and wide open blue skies, Jo-ann’s canvases bring this national landmark into homes around the world. You can often find her painting off to the side of the gallery where she has set up her acrylics and easel. The Everglades’ natural allure provides all the inspiration she needs for her works.

The gallery also features a collection of her daily paintings, a ritual she began in 2007. “I do these daily paintings in oils just to get more comfortable in the medium,” Jo-ann informs us, “The daily paintings are a great way to do some painting every day. You can’t become an artist if you don’t. Often when I’m not ready to paint a big painting I can test out a color combination in a small painting and sometimes it goes the other way.

Jo-ann describes her subject matter, “I’ve painted in the Fakahatchee, which I love for the bold growth of the palms. They stick up into the landscape and they form great shapes against the sky and the background. Further back into Big Cypress I like the stones. The prairies are wonderful too because you get the open space, the grasses

and the palms. I particularly love the sable palm because they each seem to have their own personality to me.” She adds, “I was delighted when the Marsh Trail opened up a couple of years ago in the 10,000 Islands.”

Jo-ann studied art while in her 20s, attending art school and taking all the foundation courses without getting a formal degree. Moving to Florida 20 years ago, she decided to take up painting as a profession.

“Throughout my life I’ve always had a painting going, but I was never serious about it,” Jo-ann reflects, “I think if you’re passionate about it, it can be done.” As evidenced by her collection of work, Joann Sanborn is serious about showing the world the Everglades. Pausing in her gallery, she affirms, “The landscape has soul, and it’s that soul that I hope goes with the painting.”

Jo-ann confirms that the winter months could be the best time for viewing the Everglades. One of her works captures a collection of bald cypress trees. By January, Jo-ann shares, the trees have shed their leaves for a three-month stretch and the gathering of empty tree trunks can take on a ghostly appearance during this cooler time of year. However, Jo-ann’s favorite interpretation of Everglades beauty happens in the summer heat.

“I particularly like summer because the skies are so dramatic,” she admits. “There’s so much moisture in the air that it brings out the color, like beautiful morning billowing clouds that at the end of the day are thunderstorms. The majesty of nature is so wonderful that you never really capture it.”

One way to learn about the Everglades, conservation efforts and to see the landscape through Jo-ann’s knowledgeable eyes is to read her book, Embracing the Everglades. Although compiling the book was a bit of a challenge when one would prefer to be painting, Jo-ann is satisfied with her printed creation. “I wrote about the Florida landscape because I feel that people don’t really understand how the systems

of the Everglades work,”she explains. “It all goes together, like alligator holes.”

She recalls a particular bit of history. “One thing I thought was really interesting was that someone had excavated under a tree island [a collection of trees in the middle of a prairie] and discovered traces of ancient fire and food. It may even be that those little bits of human interaction have provided the nutrients that allowed the tree islands to survive.”

THEBOB RAUSCHENBERG GALLERYon the campus of Edison State College in Fort Myers re-opens January 24, presenting ‘Yoko Ono Imagine Peace,’ an exhibition and installation of current and older works by the iconic artist. Four recent works: Wish Tree, Imagine Peace Maps, Onochord, and Imagine Peace Tower offer visitors the opportunity to collaborate with Yoko in creating the work of art. Guests can attach handwritten wishes for peace to the Wish Tree and

have it delivered to the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland, joining more than a million others.

Visitors will also receive Imagine Peace buttons and Onochord flashlights that beam the message ‘I Love You’ gifts from Yoko.

The exhibition features Passages of Light, a documentary video that chronicles the conceptualization and construction of the Imagine Peace Tower. The Tower, a memor-

ial to John Lennon from Yoko, is a tall column of light, projected from a white stone monument ‘wishing well’ that has the words ‘Imagine Peace’ carved into it in 24 languages. The exhibition also features reinterpretations of older works, Parts of a Lighthouse, Mend Peace, and Play It By Trust.

Spanning an incredible, almost unbelievable range of human experience and accomplishment, and above all, countless personal and professional contributions to artists and the Arts, as well as supporters and patrons of the arts throughout the years, these are enduring gifts from Gale Bennett and a living legacy for generations. How lucky we are in Fort Myers to have known Gale Bennett, “a one-of-akind artist and teacher” and Founder/Director of ArtStudy Giverny, as one our own. We are also lucky to celebrate Gale’s life and work at Alliance for the Arts, where February 2014 is Gale Bennett 75 month!

The exhibition, Gale Bennett 75, a retrospective of the artist’s work begins with an opening reception, February 7, 5-7:30pm. On view in the Frizzell Gallery are 39 works by Gale completed over more than 40 years. Accompanying them in the Member Gallery is an exhibition of portraits of Gale painted by many of his students through the years.

Significantly, ‘the book’ that Gale promised his students for more than 30 years will finally be released and available at the opening reception. Its title, Eye into Art , chosen by Gale, underscores his eye-opening methods of helping others view, understand and create art. For the first time in one written document, Eye into Art explains and illuminates the lessons Gale taught generations of professional artists and art students about art in general and painting in particular.

Starting with an outline described by Gale, his widow Cello and a hard working committee of 15 of Gale’s former students spent almost four years producing the beautiful book explaining the principles of ‘seeing and making art’ that Gale emphasized in his live classes. Eye into Art features 69 illustrations, including more than 50 of Gale’s paintings, original demo sketches from his workshops and various paintings by other artists Gale used to demonstrate principles of composition and execution.

The Alliance will also be hosting other special events in conjunction with the Gale Bennett 75 exhibition. Pat Dunn and Marcy

Calkins, friends, colleagues and former students of Gale, will host a ‘Walk & Talk’ tour of the exhibition on February 15 at 10am, sharing personal memories of Gale, his life and work. Also scheduled for February 19 is ‘A Musical Evening with Cello & Friends.’ This special concert event will recall and recreate the beauty and charm of Gale and Cello’s ‘Musical Evenings in Giverny.’ a popular part of their ArtStudy Programs at Monet’s estate outside Paris.

Long before those heart-warming Giverny occasions, Gale was born in West Palm Beach in 1939. At age 2 he moved with his family to Fort Myers, where he was captivated by nature’s diversity and glory:

“There was a solitude in Florida back in the old days that came from a vast expanse of nature,” he used to recall. “It used to be impossible to drive down McGregor Boulevard without seeing red-headed woodpeckers – not the pileated ones, but the little red-headed ones. I’d see swallow-tailed flycatchers up on the wires. A lot of the wildlife we used to see we don’t see anymore. That’s fading away.”

Gale’s early experiences of nature remained a lifelong foundation, shaping his artistic sensibilities, vision and work. In 2004, he commented, “My painting started early in life as a love of wildlife and birds even more than art. My mother encouraged me when I was a

little kid. She would buy me coloring books. And I remember if I was really good, she would let me use her fountain pen and her good paper to practice drawing little palm trees in pen and ink.” He added, “To this day, I think you could say John James Audubon and Walt Disney were my two biggest influences in the art world. I’d never heard of Van Gogh!”

Years later, Gale left Fort Myers for New York City. “I went there [to the School of Visual Arts] on a scholarship.” He noted, “I’d done a series of murals down here on hotels and restaurants the last couple of years of high school. I took pictures of those with me and I got a working scholarship; I worked in the admissions office part time.

“When I first came back to southwest Florida in ‘68, I started out teaching in my home. Then I started a school in the old Patio de Leon downtown. It actually did pretty well. Once a month on a Sunday afternoon we’d have an opening and we’d get about 300 people in there. I think we were the first real gallery in Fort Myers.”

Responding to ‘popular demand’ for creative commercial services in the area, Gale Bennett Associates became an active ad agency, earning over 100 Addy Award nominations, and winning an Addy for Creative Commercial Announcement and an Emmy for a Shallows restaurant TV spot. “I always painted between 30 and 40 paintings a year and I kept doing that, going back and forth between the two realms,” he explained. “The weird thing about it? I was like living two lives and I didn’t have time to teach. When you run an advertising agency, you don’t have much free time.”

ing up the house and thinking to myself, ‘Where am I going to have room to hang all these paintings?’ But it worked out.”

Years later, after closing his business and devoting full time to teaching art, Gale was hired to teach a workshop in a lodge within Claude Monet’s magical ‘refuge town,’ Giverny, France. He recalled, “I was there just a few weeks and I came back and spent two years trying to figure out how to live there. Eventually, I went back in 1995 to negotiate with the owners of the lodge and with the Monet Foundation. I worked out a deal with both of them and in 1996 started my ArtStudy/Giverny summer school programs.”

Gale continued offering those worldrenowned sessions for the rest of his life, teaching Impressionism to artists around the globe. Although he frequently declared, ‘I am not an Impressionist,’ Gale certainly understood Impressionism. He could explain and demonstrate it, paint it, and teach it like no other artist on earth.

His death on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 was fittingly followed by a celebrated final memorial exhibition at Giverny’s Musée Baudy in the Spring/Summer of 2008.

Now, you can take part in the Alliance for the Arts’ newest loving celebration of Gale Bennett’s life and career, and see for yourself many of the paintings that made him a living, working, teaching artistic luminary on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and an internationally revered Master Artist the world over, now and forever.

Still, during the 10-plus years Gale ran his agency he had two retrospective exhibitions of his paintings. One at the Alliance of the Arts, as it was called in those days, was the first show they ever had. It was in the old Schulz farm house. I remember walking in and seeing all the pillars break-

WHEN I WAS CONSIDERING AND REVISITINGthe many excellent CDs released in 2013, there was one that stood out because I played and replayed it the most throughout the year. I listened to it while working and also later in the evening to relax. I also played it when friends came to visit – and was consistently asked ‘Who is this?” Whenthat it was 71-year old Chucho Valdés, they followed with, “It’s very good!” They had never heard of the Grammy and Latin Grammy winner and jazz giant, but were intoxicated by the band’s exotic mix of hard-bop jazz and AfroCuban, Spanish, Moroccan, and Native-American rhythms. Yet it is Valdes piano mastery that is most astounding. Add to this Branford Marsalis playing at the top of his game on three tracks, and you have over an hour of the finest jazz you could ever ask for – daring and familiar. Chucho Valdés and The Afro-Cuban Messengers’ Border-Free, is my favorite CD (or should I say ‘release’?) of 2013. Another standout among the many exciting jazz releases in 2013 is Trinidadborn trumpeter Etienne Charles’ Creole Soul. The album explores the music of the French, Spanish and English-speaking Caribbean, mixing creole, calypso, and reggae with American be-bop jazz and rhythm &blues. In a collection of romping party music and tender ballads, Charles’ originals stand out, even among covers of Marley’s‘Turn Y our Lights Down Low’ and Monk’s ‘Green Chimneys.’

Three releases by artists with decades of excellent music behind them are among the best of the year’s releases. Tom Jones’ Spirit in the Room is his best album in years. At 73, Jones could easily have rested on his laurels and become a nostagia act, a traveling restrospec-

tive of old hits. Instead, he is making new music with refreshing vigor, stamping songs by the likes of Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, and Leonard Cohen with his soulful voice and emotional intensity. Most surprising: a wonderful rendition of the Fifth Dimension’s psychedelic hit, ‘Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).’ Music with roots as deep as his voice.

Another personal favorite, and an album I find myself playing again and again without tiring, is Timeless, by John Hammond. If you’ve never seen Hammond in concert, in a small club or festival setting, you’re missing one of the truly great bluesmen of all time. For those of us who are fortunate enough to have witnessed his performances, we probably have not forgotten the night and venue.

With 50 years of making top-notch records and touring endlessly behind him, Hammond seems to be enjoying himself as much as ever. Timeless captures him in an intimate show, rocking through a host of classic blues, such as ‘Further on Up the Road,’ ‘Drop Down Mama,’ ‘The Sky is Crying,’ and ‘Junk Partner,’ as well as two killer Tom Waits songs. If you like the blues, there was not a better releasein 2013.

Although Sam Phillips’ new album, Push Any Button, was recorded in an 100-year old bungalow and has music evoking the glamorous pop of the 1960s &70s, the sound and content is straight out of the 21st century Los Angeles. Lasting less than 30 minutes, the album’s 10 songs strike a balance of youthful power-pop sounds with more introspective and mature lyrics. With songs

about the nature of celebrity (the power-pop of ‘Pretty Time Bomb’), relationships (the rockabilly of ‘You Know I Won’t,’ and the hard rocking ‘Things I Shouldn’t Have Told You’) and mortality (‘When I’m Alone,’ ‘No Time Like Now’ and ‘All Over Me’), she somehow offers often serious insight (and plenty of humor) in a tasty package of delicious melodies, sweet harmonies and cool arrangements. Push Any Button is very short and yet a remarkably diverse collection of always interesting songs by an artist always looking to push boundaries.

From the first listen to the first single off of Just Be Honest, Shannon Labrie’s debut album, ’Remember a Boy,’ it was apparent that there was an exciting new singer-songwriter on the music scene. The song is a stunner – tender, cutting, soulful, and smart – about the loss of love as much as a lover.

Based in Nashville, Labrie’s music expands far beyond the confines of country music, with a big dose of rhythm & blues and popular jazz. Best of the set are ‘Secret,’ a sexy come-on with horn arrangements hinting of Memphis’ soul sound, the hauntingly longing ‘Heartache of Love,’ the sassy Joss Stone-ish ‘Love Somebody,’ and the brassy ‘How Does It Feel.’ Remember the name –Shannon Labrie.

Pokey LaFarge is one of those idiosyncratic artists that not only plays music a bit off the mainstream, but also totally looks the part. His new eponymously named album, released on Jack White’s Third Man Record, sound like it could’ve been recorded during the heyday of jazz and western swing music (1930s &1940s) and Pokey (a pseudonym) looks like he just walked off the set of Grapes of Wrath or O’ Brother, Where Art Thou

The album starts with ‘Central Time,’ a perfect example of the charm and optimism that swing music exudes, followed by the gypsy blues of ‘The Devil Ain’t Lazy,’ a tongue-in-cheek warning, and a bunch of hilarious laments like (‘Won't Cha Please Don’t Do It’, ‘One Town At a Time’ and ‘Bowlegged Woman’). Some might think this music too corny and outdated, but fans of Leon Redbone and Dan Hicks, as well as Bob

Wills and Asleep at the Wheel, will appreciate the first-rate musicianship and find Pokey equally entertaining.

Luke Winslow-King is also mining the music of the same period, but hailing from New Orleans rather than the midwest, his sound is influenced a bit more by Delta blues and ragtime jazz. Songs like the title

track, ‘Moving On (Towards Better Days),’ ‘Let ‘em Talk’ and ‘You Don’t Know Better Than Me’ showcase the same depression-era escapism and optimism as LaFarge’s, but The Coming Tide also includes the gospel blues classic ‘Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning’ and a surprising cover of George Harrison’s ‘Got My Mind Set On You,’ played as a blues.

The best rock & roll album of the year be be Head in the Dirt, by Hanni El Khatib and produced by Dan Auerbach, of the Black Keys, who also plays guitar and collaborated on writing all but one of the tracks. Auerbach has corralled El Khatib’s wild energy and original vision, harnessing it into a collection of succinct rock songs that are grimy and raucous, with lots of sloppy, fuzzed-out guitar and lyrics oozing the smell of teeenage spirit. This is garage-band punk rock at it’s best – noisy and dangerous. Standouts are ‘Skinny Little Girl’ (which could easily be mistaken for a Black Keys song), ‘Nobody Move’ (which could easily be mistaken for a Gary Clark, Jr. song), ‘Can’t Win ‘em All,’ and ‘We Pay No Mind.’

Rounding out the Top Ten albums of the year is Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a ‘southern gospel musical collaboration between John Mellencamp (music & lyrics), Stephen King (book) and T Bone Burnett (bandleader & producer). The album comes in two formats – one including dialogue insterspersed between songs and one with songs only. The version with dialogue (featuring the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Meg Ryan and Kris Kristofferson) is the better choice, fleshing out the storyline and characters.

The multi-generational story is about two feuding brothers forced by their father to stay in a cabin haunted by the ghosts of his brothers, who killed each other. Mellencamp's songs, some of the best of his career, are sung by ‘characters’ played by Elvis Costello, Neko Case, Sheryl Crow, Rosanne Cash, Taj Mahal, Kristofferson, and Dave & Phil Alvin (as brothers Dan &Frank).

We can only hope that Ghost Brothers, the first Americana horror story, will soon see life as a full stage production on Broadway, on tour or, at least, on video.
