4th Annual Sing Out SWFL Choral Festival

The 4th Annual Sing Out Choral Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, February 24 and 25 at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Fort Myers. The Choral Festival will be led by Dr. Trent Brown, Artistic Director and Conductor for the Symphonic Chorale of Southwest Florida, and Associate Professor of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University, where he teaches and directs all choral ensembles.

The theme of Sing Out 2017 is Mass Appeal. The repertoire features favorite movements from well-known masses, including the Kyrie from Schubert’s Mass in G Minor, the Gloria from Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, Credo from Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass, the Sanctus and Benedictus from Mozart’s Requiem and the Agnus Dei and the Dona Nobis from Bach’s B Minor Mass.

Sing Out begins with a workshop at 6pm on February 24. The workshop continues on February 25, along with a morning and afternoon rehearsal. A Festival Concert — open to the public — will be the culmination of these efforts and will begin at 7:30pm that evening, complete with all Sing Out participants, soloists and instrumentalists.

Sing Out 2016 featured 125 singers and the Symphonic Chorale expects to exceed that number this year.

No auditions are necessary and all community singers are invited, as well as high school and college student singers and visitors to the southwest Florida area who would

love to devote a weekend to the choral art form. Pre-registration is required.

Jewish Film Festival at Regal Cinema

The Jewish Federation of Lee & Charlotte Counties presents its annual Jewish Film Festival of Southwest Florida on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, January 12 - February 7. Eight evening films will be shown at 7:15pm at Regal Cinema Bell Tower. There is one matinee screening at 3pm on Sunday, January 22.

In Search Of Israeli Cuisine

A portrait of the Israeli people told through food. Through interviews with chefs, farmers, home cooks, vintners, and cheese makers, to visits to farms, markets, restaurants and kitchens, audiences

Fanny’s Journey

Keep Quiet Csanad Szegedi was VicePresident of Jobbik, Hungary’s far right extremist party, and founder of the Hungarian Guard, a now-banned militia inspired by the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross party. Szegedi’s later learned that his maternal grandparents were Jewish and his grandmother an Auschwitz survivor. This film depicts Szegedi’s journey to embrace his newfound religion and confront his own wrong doing.

Harmonia

Sarah, harpist of the Jerusalem Philharmonic, is married to Abraham, the conductor. When Hagar, a young horn-player joins the Orchestra, Sarah’s world changes. The two women develop a unique friendship and Hagar offers Sarah to have a baby for her, from Abraham. When the baby is born, Hagar leaves the newborn son with Sarah and Abraham. Twelve years pass and the son, Ben becomes a phenomenal pianist, while Sarah gives birth to another son, Isaac. When Isaac is three, Hagar returns and an unexpected series of events ensue.

Liverpool Lads’ Tribute to The Fab Four

Following the success of their debut U.S. tour last year, including a sold-out show in Fort Myers, The Mersey Beatles, an all-Liverpoolborn Beatles tribute band, return to Fort Myers on February 11 at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in downtown Fort Myers.

The Mersey Beatles are the official Beatles tribute band representing the City of Liverpool, and from 2002-2012 they were the resident tribute band at The Cavern Club, the nightclub in Liverpool, England, where The Beatles first performed.

As part of their ‘Get Back’ tour, the band’s show spans The Beatles’ entire catalogue and features four costume changes. This year the band will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles’ iconic album, Sgt. Pepper’s. The concert begins at 7:30pm. Rookery Bay Hosts Nature Festival

The Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve hosts their 13th Southwest Florida Nature Festival, January 13-15. Activities for the entire family include almost 40 guided wildlife viewing field trips to various locations around Southwest Florida and programs at Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center. Field trips, including birding walks, buggy rides in the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge,

behind-the-scenes tour at the Naples Botanical Garden, kayak tours, guided walks, marine life touch tank, films, classes, and painting exhibit and classes are offered in conjunction with partners such as Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Big Cypress National Preserve and Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Registration is required for all field trips.

There will be activities at the Environmental Learning Center 9am-4pm, with lectures scheduled for 1, 2 & 3pm each day. Ghostbird Theatre Brings 24 Hour Art Fest to Davis Art Center

Ghostbird Theatre Company and the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center are partnering to present the 10th annual 24 Hour Festival on January 21 & 22. Visual artists, filmmakers, theatre artists, dancers, musicians, and poets race against a 24-hour clock to create unique works based on

Video, artwork or the script of their performance must be submitted by 6pm, Sunday, January 21 at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Videos and live performances can be no longer than 6 minutes. No technical adjustments can be made for the live performances other than set stage lighting.

Works, performances and videos will be judged on how effectively and creatively contestants follow the prompts, as well as the quality of the work itself. Confirmed judges include New York Times best-selling author Nathan Hill, Jessica Todd of the Rauschenberg Residency Program, Anica Sturdivant of the FGCU Art Gallery, and Amanda Plummer of Artis-Naples. Cash awards are given to best visual artwork, best video, and best live performance.

Artists will hang and display their works in the provided gallery space after 6pm, January 22. Doors open to the public at 7:30pm and performances will begin at 8pm. Eight videos, eight performances, and more than 20 visual art pieces will be featured.

Bluegrass Jamboree in Cape Coral

The Cape Coral Historical Museum is hosting its 2nd Bluegrass Jamboree on January 28. Music starts at noon and continues to 5pm, featuring the bands Bluegrass Gals, Swinging Bridge and Capt. Art Classes for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

The Alliance for the Arts, in partnership with Family Initiative, will formally launch weekly art classes for young artists with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in January. The program, ArtPlay,

is designed to engage children with ASD in the arts while focusing on identity development, self-awareness, self-esteem, social communication and building positive coping skills.

ArtPlay classes, designed for young artists under 18, are taught by a certified art therapist and supported by an Accredited Behavioral Analyst.

Pre-registration is required. Students must respond to verbal direction, independently toilet, and not require one-onone supervision.

Matlacha’s MermaidParade

Bert’s Pine Bay Gallery will host the 9th annual ‘Parade of Mermaids’ on February 10. The Gala Event is a fundraiser for From Our Hearts, a local nonprofit organization that offers assistance to sufferers of breast cancer.

Free registration begins at 5pm, at Bert's Pine Bay Gallery, located at the northeast corner of the Matlacha Bridge in Matlacha. All forms of ‘mer-folk’ are invited to participate, including merchildren, mermen and merdogs. Food and refreshments, and also mermaid

photographic portraits will be available for a donation.

Live music begins at 5pm.

At 6:45pm, costume judging will take place on the front porch of Bert’s Gallery. Last year’s Mermaid Queen, Kristina Kell, will crown the 2017 Mermaid Queen. Prizes will also be awarded for Most Original Costume, Best Merman, and two prizes for Best Merchild.

At 7pm, the Parade of Mermaids will leave the gallery, walking west to the crest of the bridge where the mermaids will throw an offering into the water, calling out a song to ‘The Sisters of the Deep.’ This year, the mermaids will each add another item: a pair of Mermaid Slippers (slipper shells). Legend has it that the use of mermaid slipper shells enables mermaids to walk on land. The Parade of Mermaids will then proceed to Bert’s Bar & Grill for more live music.

The Wyeths and American Artists in Maine: Selections from the Farnsworth Art Museum

As a source of inspiration, Maine has played an important role in American art and culture since the early 19th century. Frida Kahlo at The Dali will be Florida’s first solo exhibition showcasing the extraordinary career and life of the acclaimed 20th century artist. North and South: Photographs of U.S. Route 1 by Berenice Abbott

June 9 – October 8

In 1954, photographer Berenice Abbott journeyed along the length of U.S. Route 1, capturing the road, its towns, and inhabitants. From Florida motels made from buses to Maine potato farmers, Abbott memorialized communities up and down the East Coast. During the trip, Abbott shot more than four hundred 8x10-inch photographs, and over two thousand smaller images using her Rolleiflex camera, representing her largest portfolio of photographs devoted to a single subject. North and South will bring together a selection of 50 works from this series to present a singular visual summary of American life during the mid-1950s.

Julio Le Parc: Form into Action thru March 19

Argentinian, Julio Le Parc is a central and influential figure in participatory kinetic art who has been largely overlooked in the United States, until now. The first solo museum exhibition and only comprehensive survey of his work in North America, the exhibition is presented in the Museum’s two special exhibition galleries and features more than 100 works produced by Le Parc between 1958 and 2013, including largescale installations and rarely seen works on paper and archival material. The exhibition explores how the artist sought to ‘demystify art,’ breaking down barriers between artwork, viewer and museum. A Feast for the Senses: Art & Experience in Medieval Europe

February 4 – April 30

Curated by The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, in partnership with The Ringling, this major exhibition will feature over 160 objects, many on loan from prestigious institutions across the United States and Europe including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre. The exhibition focuses on the late medieval and early Renaissance period in Europe (1300-1500), a time in which societal changes prompted a new interest in human experience, the enjoyment of nature and the pursuit of pleasure. As a result, the art of this period functioned in a rich sensory world that was integral to its appreciation. These works were not only seen, but also touched, smelled and heard. The exhibition will bring together sacred and secular art, including paintings, tapestries, metalwork, and manuscripts, to reveal the role of the senses in courtly ritual and religious practice.

Edward West traveled to South Africa in the early 1990s after apartheid was abolished. He visited the country's communities of color — townships and squatter camps — places outside and invisible to urban centers, where South Africans of color had been forced to live. There, the artist created his series Casting Shadows, photographs depicting the lives of black South Africans during the new period of societal transformation. West also captures the rich polyglot nature of South African society in the works’ titles, which incorporate four of the country's eleven official languages.

Robert Indiana: Now and Then thru May 3

One of America’s most celebrated living artists, Robert Indiana’s first painting of the word ‘LOVE” catapulted him to international fame througout the art wolrd in 1965. Conceived originally as a postcard for the Museum of Modern Art, ‘LOVE’ is one of the most recognizable works in American art, but has tended to overshadow other significant themes that permeate Indiana’s work, including his use of numerological and personal symbols and his allusions to literature and history. This exhibition features over 70 works showcasing Indiana’s unique method of working on paper, canvas, print and in three dimensions with the same image. The Black Figure

In The European Imaginary

This exhibition considers the manner in which the visual arts of Europe imagined black people during the period of 1750-1914. As part of an expanding cultural fascination with Africa, images of blacks proliferated in various media and different contexts throughout Europe. These representations are reminders of conquest, meditations on exoticism, and romantic imaginings of black personalities and characters. Blacks in nineteenth-century European art were frequently depicted as beautiful, romantic, and alluring. Black individuals, although marginalized, were part of an increasingly international population in Europe. The Black Figure in the European Imaginary examines some of the complex histories of how black people were experienced and perceived in Europe against the backdrop of slavery and abolition.

Frida Kahlo: Through

the Lens of Nickolas Muray

In May 1931, Nickolas Muray traveled to Mexico where he met Frida Kahlo, a woman he would never forget. The two started a romance that continued on and off for the next 10 years and a friendship that lasted until her death in 1954. This exhibition features 50 photographic portraits of Kahlo taken by Muray. Taken between 1937 and 1946, the photographs explore Muray’s unique perspective as her friend, lover and confidant. Muray’s photographs bring to light Kahlo’s deep interest in her Mexican heritage, her life and the people with whom she shared close friendship.

Mediterranea: American Art from the Graham D. Williford Collection

American tourism before the Civil War usually followed that of the European Grand Tour, focusing on the important cultural centers of France, Italy and Germany. But by the late 19th Century, Americans were showing increased interest in points further abroad, including Spain, the Middle East, and North Africa. This exhibition explores the rich diversity of the Mediterranean region through the work of late 19th and early twentieth-century American artists, who capture the diversity and distinctiveness of its flora, the legacy of the Greco-Roman past, and the influence of Christianity and Islam.

On January 26, Florida Gulf Coast University will be opening its doors to an exhibit featuring the creative and scientific artistic works of Matthew Shlian.

“This arts and science exhibition falls under the FGCU umbrella project called ‘Crossroads of Art and Science’ and Shlian is the third artist we’ve brought into the artist-in-residence program,” says John Loscuito, FGCU Gallery Director. “The goal is to connect the artist with FGCU students and faculty, and to explore scientific crossroads, applications, or inspirations in the arts.”

FGCU has frequently incorporated art and music with science through multimedia exhibitions that involve video and music. Shlian’s paper engineering artistry, where he creates folded paper sculptures based on shapes he finds in nature, is a good fit.

The exhibit will feature both large and small scale pieces which are framed and mounted. One of the most notable pieces is still being engineered as a part of a collaborative alternative printmaking class with Shlian working with students and FGCU professor Andy Owens. During the first part of class, Shlian explored a variety of techniques and approaches to printmaking. He encouraged students to think about paper in three-dimensions, which is what he does when he creates his folded sculptures. Though he typically uses a monochromatic palette, he had students generate different textures and color fields using the printmaking process called monotype. Monotype ink is applied to a plexiglass plate and then printed from that plate to get one unique print.

Students decided what types of colors or textures would be appropriate for transforming these monotype prints into three-dimensional forms. They chose a few different selections from the sixteen students making prints; then the entire class repeated the recipe of what was chosen. The final result was 66 sheets of large scale monotype prints. Each sheet allowed for over 50 cuts per sheet, which ultimately generated about 500 forms that could then be used for their collaborative project.

These are not arbitrary geometric forms, but are specific to Shlian’s design of the pattern he uses in a

die-cut machine (a die-cut machine is a flatbed device with blades for scoring or cutting paper, which is hand-cranked through). After the machine cuts the paper the paper is folded by the human hand in a type of three-dimensional pyramid form. The form then can be arranged in different ways. “It’s kind of like how you see paver stones in the street; there’s infinite ways you can arrange them to create different patterns, like a herringbone pattern, or something like that,” Loscuito explains. “So, Shilan, along with the students, will arrange these pyramid forms in different ways to create variations on a surface. When you see his work you can see how one form repeats itself and the pattern becomes more complex.”

During Shlian’s next visit to FGCU, Owens’ class will use the die-cutter to cut these monoprints up into little geometric shapes that will be folded into pyramid-like forms. Then hundreds of these forms will be arranged and assembled. Shlian and students will glue and arrange them in a unique geometric configuration on a 4 ft x 8 ft sheetboard, all the while applying the protein misfold technique.

What is the protein misfold technique and how do you explain the artistic and scientific process of Matt Shlian to someone who is not a scientist?

According to Loscuito, “Matt talks a lot about applied physical sciences in his work; he

talks about flexible solar cells, filtration systems, and protein misfolds and how all his paper folding has been picked up by scientists, primarily at the University of Michigan, where he’s working, and there is a relationship to sacred geometry and how religion and this idea of this divine, this kind of ideal or unifying theory that connects spiritual beliefs to observations that we have in the world around us. This has been going on for thousands of years — observing geometric forms — and I think that his work points to that as well.”

What these beautiful aesthetic forms Shlian creates also point to is this “eternal struggle or eternal fascination with geometry and its application on the macro and microscale,” says Loscuito. In other words, if you think about how bees create honeycombs, or hexagons, we see the mathematical equation of repeating forms.

He continues, “This is everywhere; how nature creates these repeating forms, and Matt points out that protein misfolds are when proteins misalign in the way they are supposed to be folding in some kind of order, but they stop, or they misfold — and protein misfolds are what leads to Alzheimer’s disease or cystic fibrosis.” Proteins are molecules that must keep a specific three-dimensional form to function properly. Protein misfolds in

our body duplicate themselves. When they stop duplicating correctly, variations occur, and these variations can lead to disease. So, when Shlian creates his threedimensional paper folds, he explores how naturally occurring repeated patterns in nature take on a ‘misfold,’ which eventually creates a whole new pattern. “He creates the appearance of chaos when those patterns aren’t repeating orderly anymore,” he explains. If there was a protein misfold (a twist or variation) in the hexagons of the bee honeycombs the hexagon pattern would become altered and soon spread out into variations that would end up looking like beautiful chaos.

The beautiful chaos of Shlian’s work and the results of the collaboration with Andy Owen’s class will be displayed on the exhibit’s opening night, January 26. There will be a public lecture at 6pm, followed by a reception and the exhibition from 6:30-8pm.

You could easily discover Naplesbased painter/sculptor Marcus Zotter’s work online via his website, rootsstudionaples.com. Social media is overflowing with images of his creations. Just Instagram him or find him on Facebook. Better yet, put down the phone and discover art happening in real time at one of his live art events. Music provided either by a band or his girlfriend Beatriz (DJ Honey Bee) fuel the creativity as the magic materializes onto the canvas in front of your eyes. If you’ve been out and about in downtown Naples or Fort Myers recently, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen the spark coming to life on an oversize canvas while the music plays. Yeah, he’s that guy.

“My goal is to be out in the open and have people know who I am,” Marcus says. “One of the first things that I started down here was at 7th Avenue Social (in downtown Naples). That was the first thing that was big and open for everybody to see. They have this 8 ft x 16 ft chalkboard on the far wall of this rectangular room that they have artists do work on. At night, a band comes in and performs in front of it. I first did their chalkboard before the band would play. That developed into my doing live artwork while a band is playing. It’s a nice place to demonstrate to people what I do.”

And just what does he do?

Marcus responds, “Sculpture is my favorite. My love is for drawing, but there is something about making a three-dimensional life size sculpture... I just created a human being.” We’re unsure if that’s a reference to his remarkable giant portrait of the Frankenstein creature or not. “I was a sculpting major so I’ve learned how to do portraits of everybody, the full figure.,’ he continues. “The celebrity martinis are all sculpture.”

As a contributing artist to the annual Naples Celebrity Martini Glass Auction fundraiser benefitting non-profits like PAWS Assistance Dogs, Kidz Act, Honor Flight and other local charities, Marcus has been able to build familiarity while also helping to raise much-needed funds. Each glass incorporates an intricate sculpture and homage to an A-list celebrity and an autograph,

often fetching thousands of dollars. His contributions this year include Ben Affleck’s Batman from the recent movie and TV star Andy Cohen.

Poke your head into his cozy studio located just off famed 5th Avenue in downtown Naples to view his various creations, as well as whatever Marcus is currently working on. Many of his oversize portraits are homages to recently deceased celebrities, Gene Wilder and Arnold Palmer among them. “One of my favorites is Prince. I think I really nailed the look on him. It was a live piece I did in Fort Myers during a pop up art show with three other artists. I think it was a really strong piece. I did it right after he died,” Marcus shares. “I’m not picking someone at random, rather I do something people are thinking about. Gene Wilder was the one after Prince. He had just passed away. Halloween was the Frankenstein inspiration. It’s always some kind of tie-in.” He adds, “Arnold Palmer also seems to be an inspiration lately.”

Marcus is happy to stand out from the Naples crowd, “My artwork is very unlike anything else in downtown Naples. They usually stick to a conservative style, but my artwork is more of Miami and Fort Myers. You don’t have to stick to a beach and pelican scene all day long.”

His rather atypical studio may have something to do with his creative inspiration. Roots Studio is not just a spot for Marcus’ work, but also a professional hair salon in the back of the space. Roots Beauty Studio is owned and operated by Marcus’ girlfriend, Beatriz Hernandez. When she’s not DJ’ing one of his live art events, she serves a steady clientele who are privy to a firsthand view of Zotter’s work.

Marcus says, “We haven’t had one person come in and not be interested. Eighty percent of the time my large commissions are done for people who are customers of Beatriz first,” adding “It’s because these women are there for an hour, two hours at a time and

they’re staring at my artwork. They talk about it. My biggest goal is to be that two-person show that people can hire. DJ and live portrait artist. It would be one cool spectacle going on. Anytime downtown there are events taking place I use her as my music in the shop. Our odd concept is benefitting both of us.”

Beatriz concurs, “I’m a graffiti artist and collector and doing hair is in my roots. I want

people to see it as an art form more than a service. When people walking in first see the artwork then see me doing hair, the first comment is, ‘I’ve been looking for an artist to do my hair.’” In fact, she explains that their unique presentation draws other imaginative, like-minded individuals into the shop. “We have this hub of creative, artistic people. Because our community is open arms we’re open arms with everyone else.”

This network of art and hair design has helped to expand their reach to downtown Fort Myers as part of the monthly First Friday Art Walk event. A client of Beatriz’ invited them to set up each month in front of her store, The Art of Fashion & Moore Boutique. Marcus paints while Beatriz does her signature silk tinsel weave into customers’ hair. The tinsel has really taken off. Beatriz says, “I have women who travel the world to get those done. It’s become a real image. I didn’t think anything cool would come from it and here we are.”

Hailing from the Philadelphia area, Marcus is already gaining quite the fanbase in Southwest Florida. He studied art at the famed Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, focusing on sculpting, painting and drawing. “I learned a lot from the figure, the portrait,” he says. “That’s really my focus in my artwork. It’s where I learned the urban street style and graffiti influence, as well as the fine art of old masters.

Coming to Naples only a few years ago,

Marcus knew he needed to get involved. Doing non-profit work seemed a logical move. He recalls, “I got started with the sixth annual Naples International Film Festival poster. I ran into the right people and one art director put me in the right hands immediately. I moved onto the Celebrity Martini Glass Auction.” He continues, “Coming from Philadelphia, it’s a bigger city, but Naples is a faster pace. You can do one project after the next. I met Beatriz and she actually was

the one that allowed me the possibilities of showing my art on 5th Avenue. We’ve had that location on Park Street the last year and a half. After a year I’m already getting tons of commissions. People are signing up to come see my shows.”

Several clients are also apparently wanting him to do portraits of their dogs. Marcus was commissioned at one time to immortalize a client’s dog and when he posted the portrait on Facebook, the requests started rolling in. Where we would assume the biggest challenge is getting Sparky to sit still (picturing giant bucket of treats and Cesar Milan), but Marcus says often they send him a photograph and he does the portrait from that.

Aside from his regular gigs around both downtown Naples and Fort Myers, Marcus will also be participating in the ‘For the Love of Art’ fundraiser celebration at the von Liebig Art Center on February 25, featuring gourmet cuisine, cocktails, music and artists all coalescing for an amazing night.

If you’re going to set goals, might as well go big. Marcus ruminates, “A big dream of mine is to become a mural artist. The bigger the better. I would love to do a mural on the side of a hundred-story building. That would be really cool, creating artwork for the public to see.” • Roots Studio is located at 524 Park St. in downtown Naples. Words to live by. At least for Marc Harris, internationally recognized wildlife photographer and owner of M. H. Wildlife & Fine Art Photography Gallery.

“When I was younger,” he explains, “I did a lot of traveling as captain of a sport fishing outlet. All my free time was spent taking pictures of wildlife. I managed to build an impressive archive and put a vast portfolio together. My main models were a variety of species of

shore birds. Before I knew it, people were asking me if they could purchase some of my photographs and my life as a professional photographer was born.”

Like most of his subjects, Harris migrated here from the North. He grew up in Tennessee, calling thousands of acres of wilderness home. His free time was spent hiking and exploring unspoiled woodlands, studying animal behavior and falling in love with nature; its purity and all of its creatures. His passion was slowly morphing into a career as an outdoorsman,

wildlife photographer and humanitarian for conservation.

“I moved to Florida in 1978 mainly because of the Everglades. I had heard and researched so much about this amazing place that I couldn’t wait to see

it in person. I wasn’t disappointed; It’s an amazing echo system in a class of its own. My first visits were exploratory, but I was soon taking pictures of alligators, birds and every other creature living there. Ever since my arrival I’ve been attending ‘Up To My Neck In Muck’ University and loving every minute of it.

Searching for the perfect picture is his life’s mission. He says it’s all about preparation and does his due diligence before even thinking of taking the first

photo. It requires trekking in the trenches in the early morning hours scouting for ideal locations, studying the light and getting familiar with the habits of the wildlife.

“I’m usually at my destination and back home before most people have their first cup of coffee. To me lighting is as important as the subject I’m photographing. I usually go back to the same spot several different times of day to decide when it will best compliment my subject. Sometimes it happens fast, sometimes it takes days, weeks or even months. My goal is for the wildlife to appear at the exact time the light is optimal. It becomes a matter of chance meeting preparation.”

One reason planning is so important is that he never touches, moves or baits the animals to draw them out. “The goal is to capture unanticipated moments of wildlife in their habitat. I’m able to accomplish this because I become intimate with my subject, then trust Mother Nature to

take over and do her job.”

Harris is a purist. “I don’t use artificial lighting, won’t re-pixelate an image and I’m not a fan of Photoshop. I like to keep the size of my prints to 40 inches x 60 inches because it’s a popular size and I can still maintain museum quality.’

Getting the right shot also requires using the right camera and he uses several. Most are full frame image, and once again light plays a key role in his choice for a particular shot. His favorite camera shoots 11 frames per second, in continuous mode. Being able to shoot frames fast is required when taking pictures of birds in flight or any animal in motion.

Harris says he’s a big fan of ‘bokeh’ (out of focus background). When he wants the image to stand out from the background he needs a camera with a fast lens set at the widest aperture. The lens determines the design, shape and size of visible bokeh.

Most of the time he uses a hand-held camera. “Even if I wanted to use a tripod it would be difficult considering the places I go and the fact that I like to shoot my subjects moving.”

The result of his work speaks for itself. Alison, his wife and gallery curator, says, “Clients who come in the gallery are amazed at the images Marc has captured. We have 30-35 large pieces hanging at all times and we change them regularly. Customers also enjoy browsing through the archives for a specific wildlife. There are thousands upon thousands of images, one more beautiful than the other.”

Harris has had many requests to teach and although he is happy to share his knowledge, he believes that only the technical aspects can be taught. “It takes a lot more than learning about shutter speeds or aperture settings to get a great photograph,” he says. “Camera’s are like airplanes. You need to drive them. You have to understand lighting and composition. Creativity and artistry is a skill set that can’t be taught. It’s instinctive.”

Right from the beginning Harris has had his own idea of what he wants to capture. “Many of the pictures I take are in my head before I start shooting. I’ve never tried to emulate a particular photographer, although I do admire Clyde Butcher. To me he is one of, if not the best, landscape photographers ever.”

Harris’ work has been featured in exhibitions at The von Liebig Gallery in Naples and Arts for Act Gallery in Fort Myers.

His prints appear on many surfaces. He recalls a time when everyone was requesting canvas transfers, then clay became popular, then acrylics, and a few years ago metal was introduced.

“We do some printing ourselves but employ a professional to handle the metallics and larger

paper prints. There are many processes and surfaces to choose from and I depend on each photo to dictate which will do it the most justice.”

One process is dye sublimation, a digital print technology that enables the reproduction of full color images on a variety of surfaces. The surface is coated, then the image is infused into the coating using an innovative manufacturing process that provides high-definition, durable photos that will preserve images for generations.

On metals, the inks are dye-infused onto a specially coated aluminum and sealed with a gemlike water and scratch resistant Ultra Violet coating. This technological breakthrough results in high definition bringing images to life.

Harris boasts, “The vibrancy and dimensionality of our metal prints rivals any other pho-

tographic product and exceeds the quality of traditional paper prints. The inks are infused into the metal and the result is an eye popping bright print that will last forever.”

There have been requests that have stretched his skills. He says, “One client wanted a landscape image broken into 24 inch tiles and installed on the back wall of his shower stall. The finished image was six feet by ten feet. It was an amazing creative challenge.”

Harris plans to continue to explore Southwest Florida, the Everglades in particular. “I may take a trip to Louisiana at some point during the year, just for variety,”he says. “I have a client who owns acres of property there and wants me to take some local photos of wildlife, especially ducks. But I intend to stay in Florida until breeding season is over because that's when animals are typically in full bloom and their colors are magnificent. Their behaviors are also more interesting.”

The gallery will celebrate its one-year anniversary in March. “It’s been an exciting year and we are quickly outgrowing our present location,” Alison explains. “After season we will probably be looking for a larger facility. Even more exciting is that we have confirmed an exhibit at the University of Florida/IFAS Collier County Extension from March 1-April 7. Marc is also negotiating other possible exhibits. And we plan to continue promoting conservation and bringing awareness to endangered species.” •

Here you will find Arts for Act, tucked away on First Street between Hendry & Jackson. Arts For Act presents artworks by local member artists alongside vintage clothing, shoes and gifts, all with the purpose of helping abused women and children throughout Lee, Hendry and Glades counties. It’s a cornucopia of treasures from the moment of entry all the way into the back rooms.

I had the opportunity to interview the curator, Claudia Goode.

How did you find yourself curator of Arts for ACT gallery?

CLAUDIA:I was hired as the Administrative Assistant at Abuse Counseling & Treatment in December 1999. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that ACT not only had two shelters in Lee County, but also a thrift store, Second ACT, and an art gallery, Arts for ACT Gallery. I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember so the art gallery really peaked my interest. I soon found out that the gallery was in need of a manager and curator. I quickly told the CEO of ACT, Jennifer Benton that I was interested and would do it and my administrative duties as well. Long story shortened to today… I’m still doing Human Services things for ACT and have been the curator of ACT Gallery for sixteen years.

What makes you passionate about your job?

Arts for ACT Gallery feeds my creative soul. Even if I’m not painting or creating my own art, I’m picking featured or co-op artists for the gallery and hanging their art each and every month. More than half of the art that is at ACT Gallery changes monthly and I would say I hang an average of 125-150 art pieces each month. I take pride in hanging the featured and co-op artists artworks and making our gallery look unique and different each month. I love to arrange and rearrange the look of Arts for ACT Gallery.

How has this job changed you?

ACT changed me in a variety of ways. It makes me appreciate what I have: a family, a job and a nonviolent home! ACT shelter has 109 beds in its three locations that are mostly full. We have over 55 children in shelter right now. I’m most appreciative of my time at the gallery, too — the days that I am there enjoying the creativity of over 50 member artists and what they are exhibiting for sale.

Tell me a little bit about the history of the gallery.

Arts for ACT Gallery was created and opened by Jennifer Benton. She is the sister of internationally

acclaimed artist Darryl Pottorf and a friend of the worldrenowned artist the late Bob Rauschenberg. Many years ago, she started as a volunteer with ACT and thought of having a fundraiser auctioning art to raise money for our cause. This led her to open the cutest thrift store and a small art gallery in the Royal Palm Square. The artists Mel Meo, Elaine Hayes and Michael Smith were involved with the gallery.

Shortly after I was hired, Jennifer felt that we had outgrown the space and another space opened in the front of the Royal Palm Square by the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, so to enlarge the thrift store we moved into both spaces. That is when I took over the gallery and we started doing featured artists and a First Friday artists reception, in about 2000. This location was also perfect to start art classes and we did quite well with after-school classes and adult classes and ‘make it – take it’ classes. The bad thing about the location was that it was next to our thrift store and everyone that came in wanted thrift store pricing.

One of my artist volunteers, Kitty Tyler (owner of April’s Eatery) told us about a spot that would be perfect for the gallery in downtown Fort Myers that was right next to her on First Street. Jennifer Benton and I went downtown to look at the spot, which had been the Sydney Davis Men’s Store, but was now a derelict medical transcription office. We each saw a similar vision of turning it into what it is today, a SoHo-like space that I hope most people will find quaint and charming. It took Jennifer, our maintenance man, Riley, myself, and a handful of volunteers about 10 months of hard work to tear down walls, refurbish the pine floors, drywall, paint, mosaic, and move all 2000 plus square feet of ACT Gallery. It was a labor of love. Still is.

Describe the metamorphosis of the gallery since its inception until now.

When the gallery first opened downtown, we were the second gallery downtown. There was a small gallery

where The Standard is now, but it closed shortly after we opened. We have seen First Street redone three times, lived through the green fence time when the city bricked the streets. Slowly, others saw the potential of downtown and the creativity that it brings. The Fort Myers Art League moved to Monroe St. and Terry Tincher opened Space 39. We had our first Art Walk shortly after that. I can’t remember the year, but the paint brush decal that Dan Paight’s Community Redevelopment Office provided for us is still on my floor today. Galleries started springing up in 2008, we formed an art coalition and Fort Myers Art Walk was born. We now have fourteen galleries in the River District. This event was the catalyst that transformed the River District into what it is today.

Tell me about the merchandise for sale in the gallery beyond art.

Knowing that art is very subjective and that original art is expensive, I realized that in order to stay alive and pay our rents and bills, I would have to sell more that just art. My first thought was to utilize a small portion of the donations that stores and individuals give to ACT to help us raise money for the victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. I have two rooms at the gallery for vintage and designer clothing, hats, shoes and purses. We even have antiques and furniture for sale at the gallery.

What are the themes for your upcoming shows?

I only have one themed exhibit at the gallery each year and it is always in July. We usually have three themes, one for each of the featured exhibition salons. This year, I haven’t finalized what the themes will be, but some ideas I’m leaning towards are Shattered Images, Moving Parts, Things with Wings, or Optical Illusions. What artists will we be seeing in the gallery in those shows?

I’m very excited about our featured artists for 2017. I have Martha Dodd, Peter Zell, Peter Stilton, Bradford Herman, Tom Nagata, Dodo, Rob Goldey, and the Art Quilters Unlimited in the Main Gallery. In the White Gallery, we will be exhibiting Cynthis Egan, Yvonne Krystman, Tracie Thompson, Justin Markley and Annette Brown and Patrick Connelly. There are some openings for the White Gallery, so interested artists should call me.

How do you decide what artist’s work you would like to display?

I usually ask interested artists to email me three of their best images and if I think I can market them and their work fits with ACT Gallery then I contact them for an interview. I have to see their art in person and I usually do these interviews on Friday’s. How do you pair artists for an exhibition?

I try to have three

it is an 11am-5pm day for them. We also have volunteers that help during the Art Walks and Music Walk events. I have two volunteers that help me hang the art each month, Marie and Kate. Each and every one of my volunteers brings a special talent, kindness, knowledge, and love for art.

What is ACT’s mission.

ACT protects, supports and educates victims of domestic violence and their children, survivors of sexual assault and human trafficking in Lee, Hendry and Glades counties.

Like for the exhibit that is in the gallery for December, I featured a naïve artist, Kim Kraft Beckler, a portrait artist, Lisette Morales, and an urban artist, Nick Masiello.

Tell me about member artists.

ACT Gallery has several co-op rental spaces available through-out its space. Prime front hanging space, space just off the main gallery and several other hangable spaces are available. Co-Op Gallery monthly membership dues range from $25-$100 monthly depending on the size and location of your hanging spot. 20% percentage commission will be taken from sold artwork.

In lieu of the monthly membership dues, we have a few opportunities to volunteer at the gallery for reduced or free membership dues and hanging space. Volunteers also have the privilege of using our gallery as studio or art workshop space when you are volunteering.

ACT Gallery maintains a high standard of curatorial choice when accepting artists into the gallery. This is the perfect opportunity to meet other artists and to showcase your art in a gallery that is visited by thousands of locals and tourists each month.

Who works in the gallery?

Arts for ACT Gallery is run by a handful of volunteers when I’m not in the gallery. Most of these volunteers are artists, too. If it was not for them I could not perform my duties at the administrative offices at ACT. Most have been volunteering at the gallery for years. They open and close the gallery;

The agency provides the following services to realize its mission: emergency protective shelter, a 24-hour crisis hotline, one-on-one counseling, advocacy, support groups, rape crisis center, outreach counseling, batterer’s intervention groups, children’s program, community and professional education and awareness, and information and referrals to those seeking assistance in other matters. Services are free and provided to everyone, including those who may have experienced sexual abuse as children and men in same sex relationships.

ACT is a private, nonprofit social service agency funded by grants and donations. Grant funding has changed significantly, along with government funding, which has greatly been reduced or eliminated in many areas.

What would you like to see happen in the near future and long term for ACT and the gallery?

I would love to see an increase in art patrons during our slower summer months and encourage people to collect original art instead of buying prints from big box stores. The local artists are so talented and you will be surprised at the price of an original piece of art. We feature lots of emerging artists whose art is most ecumenical.

Are there any goals you are trying to reach?

We would love to have Arts for ACT Gallery known as the first and foremost place that the Fort Myers’ resident and tourist to Southwest Florida come to buy art! •

2016’s Best Albums

LAST YEAR

SAWa slew of outstanding albums by acclaimed and accomplished artists as well as new artists promising years to come of excellent music. As always, it’s difficult to compile a list of the ‘best’ albums of the year — the choice eventually comes down to personal tastes — but here are a few releases, as varied and different as they are, that I can recommend without reservation to just about anyone interested in hearing some of the best music of the past year.

Beyonce Lemonade

Lemonade is going to be on almost everyone’s year-end list of best albums of the year because it is nothing less than a tour de force showcasing not just her incredible singing chops but also her songwriting, arranging and production skills. Already the pop and R&Bicon of our time, Bey proves to be a formidable writer, tackling themes of both personal and cultural importance. The album smashes all demarcations of genres by mixing everything from rap (‘Formation’) to Americana (‘Daddy Lessons’) to Gothrock (‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’ collaboration with Jack White) to soul (‘Pray You Catch Me’) to reggae (‘Hold Up’) and creating a musical gumbo so tasty that it’s impossible to resist. Not only the best album of the year, but the best album of Beyonce’s long and accomplished career.

Allen Toussaint American Tunes

Posthumous release of Toussaint’s last recording sessions, American Tunes is a beautiful gift from one of the country’s truly great musical icons. Primarily a collection of instrumental solo piano recordings, the album features several New Orleans’ standards (Earl King’s ‘Big Chief,’ Fats Waller’s ‘Viper’s Drag,’ Earl Hines’ ‘Rosetta’ among them) and Duke Ellington covers (‘Lotus Blossom,’ ’Come Sunday,’ and ‘Rocks in My Head’). The album also features a new version of Toussaint’s classic, ‘Southern Nights’ and Paul Simon’s ‘American Tune,’ a fitting farewell from one of the masters of American popular song. You will not hear more gorgeous music anywhere anytime — except perhaps now in heaven.

John Prine For Better, or Worse

John Prine is a national treasure. One of the best songwriters of our time and an inspiration for generations of singer-songwriters that followed, Prine may have lost some of his vocal range and strength — surviving cancer surgery almost 20 years ago — but he has lost none of his infamous wit or affable personality. For Better, or Worse is the follow-up album to his acclaimed In Spite of Ourselves, the album he was recording when he received his cancer diagnosis, and it’s just as good. Again a collection of classic, if often lesser known, country music nuggets sung with some of his favorite female singers, album standouts are duets with Iris Dement (‘Who’s Gonna Take the Garbage Out’ and ‘Mr. & Mrs. Used To Be’), Kacey Musgraves (‘Mental Cruelty’), Alison Krauss (‘Falling In Love Again’), and Morgane Stapleton (‘Look At Us’). Switching between hilarious and heartbreaking, Prine and his gal pals never fail to tickle your funny bone or tug on your heart strings. Things he’s been doing his entire career.

Clairy Browne Pool

When Australian Browne came on the scene a about five years ago, she seemed to be riding a retro wave, part classic ‘50s rockabilly and part ‘60s girl group pop. This new album, produced by Mark Ronson cohort Amanda Warner, leaves all that retro sound in the rear view mirror as it speeds off to 21st Century pop success. Sometimes silly, sometimes bawdy, Pool is infectious all the time, thanks to smart songs, crisp production, funky arrangements and Clairy’s pop star singing. ‘Vanity Fair’ and ‘Killem With It,’ ‘Pool,’ will get you up and dancing, while her ‘With You’ will remind you of Katy Perry’s best girlempowerment anthem.

Kelsey Waldon I’ve Got a Way

Hailing from Monkey’s Eyebrow, Kentucky, Waldon is, as you would expect, all country. Her songwriting belies her young age; confident, clever and concise. Backed by a band with a biting Telecaster

and twanging pedal-steel, Kelsey shines on originals like ‘Dirty Old Town,’ ‘All By Myself,’ ‘You Can Have It,’ and ‘Don’t Hurt The Ones (Who’ve Loved You the Most),’ songs I wouldn’t be surprised to hear others cover. Kelsey’s covers of the Gosdin’s ‘There Must Be Someone’ and Bill Monroe’s ‘Traveling Down This Lonesome Road’ offer further insight into her reverence for what country music is all about. Watch this woman. She’s going to be a star.

Delfeayo Marsalis Make America Great Again!

An excellent antidote for a year in which some promised to make America great againby discounting what makes America great now, Marsalis has made an album celebrating exactly what might make America great the most — jazz! With his Uptown Jazz Orchestra, Marsalis has put together a collection of the high energy, happy and thoroughly funky music rooted in New Orleans — among the most infectious music there is. Part Ellington and part Toussaint, part brothel and part church, part small combo and part marching band, the music here is always inspirational. The title track, narrated by the actor Wendell Pierce, is an especially important song on what is Delfaeyo’s greatest achievement to date. An album that’s truly making America great one song at a time.

The Rolling Stones Blue and Lonesome

This is what happens when you get The Rolling Stones together for a few days to have some fun and record a few of their favorite Chicago blues. Have their old friend, Eric Clapton stop by for a while and you get a very loose, incredibly intimate and entirely enjoyable collection of classics by the greatest rock & roll band that ever was. Without the multitude of takes, hours of sound mixing, everpresent overdubbing, and post-production tweaks, what we are left with is the Rolling Stones album many of their fans have been waiting decades for: a straight ahead, no holds barred, plain and simple, blues album. The waiting has not been in vain. Nobody plays the blues better than Keith, Ronnie and Charlie (and few can take a blues guitar solo to match Eric Clapton), but it is Mick that really shines here. In his mid-70s, he has never sounded better, snarling and growling through nuggets by the likes of Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon and Jimmy Reed. And Jagger seems to take extra relish in his harmonica playing throughout the album. Best blues album of the year, and the best Stones album since 1995’s Stripped

Charles Lloyd & the Marvels I Long to See You

Lloyd, one of the jazz icons of the 1960s, has teamed up here with Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz, two of the most innovative guitarists around to create an album that defies categorization. Mostly instrumental (Willie Nelson sings ‘Last Night I had the Strangest Dream’ and Norah Jones sings Billy Preston’s ‘You Are So Beautiful to Me’), it can just as easily be described as a jazz album as it could be described as Americana or even spiritual music. Opening with a powerful take on Dylan’s ‘Masters of War,’ with blistering dueling guitars by Leisz and Frisell leading into a wild solo by Lloyd, makes it clear that this is no ordinary recording. The band dissects and rebuilds traditional spirituals ‘Shenandoah,’ ‘All My Trails’ and ‘Abide by Me,’ and swings through Lloyd’s originals with the abandon of musicians locked in a groove that comes along few times in a career.

Van Morrison ...It’s Too Late to Stop Now... VOLUMES II, III, IV

Universally accepted as one of the greatest live albums of all time, Van Morrison’s It’s Too Late to Stop Now..., captured him at his peak, as one part of his career was ending and another was about to begin. The double-album featured 18 songs spanning his career from the band Them through 1973, including ‘Into the Mystic,’ ‘These Dreams of You,’ ‘Domino,’ ‘St. Dominic’s Preview,’ and ‘Gloria.’ to name a few of his classics. This release, 42 years later, revisits those famous shows and adds 45 tracks to that legacy, including ‘The Way Young Lovers Do,’ ‘Brown Eyed Girl,’ ‘Moondance,’ ‘Wild Night,’ and his cover of Kermit the Frog’s ‘Bein’ Green.’ It’s amazing to think that 18 tracks couldn’t adequately convey the depth and breadth of his greatness, but having this new collection (3 CD/1 DVD) makes it clear that you can never have too much Van Morrison. Listen and learn.

Clay Parker & Jodi James

Both established artists in the Baton Rouge music scene for years, Parker & James finally came together in 2014 to write twelve songs in two weeks. Their songs are smart and sincere, and they can write solemn and

silly. Sounding somewhat like Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Parker & James have a similar stylistic range. From the opening of ‘Come Back’ to the end of ‘After the Smoke Clears’ the listener is offered four achingly gorgeous songs with heartbreaking vocals and emotional lyrics, and two bluesy, fun vamps (‘Showboatin;’ and ‘Meditation Blues’) that display the musical and emotional range of the duo. Only complaint is that there are only six tracks on this release and it leaves you wanting so much more. Hopefully, we’ll hear more from this duo soon.

Herlin Riley New Direction

V eteran of Ahmad Jamal and W ynton Marsalis bands, the 59 year old drummer explores the many influences he absorbed in a music family in New Orleans with a band of musicians in their 20s: saxophonist Godwin Louis, pianist Emmet Cohen and bassist Russell Hall. In the tradition of another great jazz drummer/bandleader, Art Blakey, Riley takes his Afro-Cuban, jazz, and blues experiences and shakes them into a sound that is both new yet familiar. An enticing collection of modern New Orleans music; funky jazz for folks who enjoy their musical gumbo on the hot side.

Marc Ribot

The Young Philadelphians Live in Tokyo Marc Ribot is one of the most sought after guitarists around, adding his unique sound to albums by rock, Americana and jazz artists’ work. Ribot is joined here by one-time bassist in Ornette Coleman’s band, Jamaladeen Tacuma, as well as avant-garde jazz guitarist Mary Halverson and jazz drummer G. Calvin Weston. Together they perform seven of the most popular R&B hits of the 1970s, including The Trammps’ ‘Love Epidemic,’ Teddy Pendergrass’ ‘Love TKO,’ Ohio Players’ ‘Love Rollercoaster,’, Van McCoy’s ‘The Hustle,’ and MFSB’s ‘TSOP,’ playing each with reverence, before deconstructing the melody, each soping into space, and then returning to revisit the classic as we knew it. Exhileratingly stretched to outer limits, they never stray too far, giving the listener a new appreciation of the music without harming the original understanding of the song. An album for the adventurous listener, who will not be disappointed. •
