Celebrating the 10th Anniversary Sing Out!

Choral Artistry (formerly the Symphonic Chorale of Southwest Florida) hosts a 10th Anniversary celebration of their popular ‘Sing Out! Messiah Choral Festival,’ January 28 & 29.

The Southwest Florida Choral Festival invites all community and visitor singers, ages 15 and older, get to “join the chorus” for a weekend of singing and camaraderie — no auditions required.

This special Sing Out! celebration will feature the most popular choruses and solos from Handel’s Messiah. The weekend’s events commemorate the Symphonic Chorale’s inaugural performance ‘Messiah at the Mann’ at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in 2011, as well as its first ‘Sing Out! Messiah Festival’ in 2013.

The Festival begins on Friday evening, January 28th, 7-9pm, and continues on Saturday, January 29, 9:30am-4pm, concluding at 7pm with a free’ Sing Out! Messiah Festival Concert” performed by the Festival Chorus with Chamber Orchestra, led by Dr. Trent Brown. Singers are asked to register by 6:30pm, before the concert. Students may participate for free and a discount is available for groups of 5 or more singers registering together.

Jewish Film Festival Offers

In-Person and Online Options

For over 25 years, the Jewish Film Festival of Southwest Florida has presented a diverse selection of outstanding Jewish films from all over the world that examine Jewish history, heritage, and culture. This year’s Film Festival, from February 6-27, offers evening and matinee screenings, and will offer a hybrid format with in-person screenings at the Regal Belltower Theater, as well as simultaneous online showings.

This year’s Festival opens February 6, at 3pm, with a screening of Howie Mandel, But Enough About Me, a revealing documentary that follows the life and career of Howie Mandel, comedian, actor, producer, and judge on America’s Got Talent. The film explores his early years in the comedy industry and how he became a star on one of the most beloved television series ever, St. Elsewhere. It follows Mandel as he performs on the road, behind the scenes at America’s Got Talent, and personal time with his family. The film also explores the personal struggles with OCD.

Other films being screened at the Festival are:

February 8: Persian Lessons, a German/French/Persian production with subtitles, that tells the story of Gilles, a young Belgian man, arrested in 1942 by the SS and sent to a concentration camp, where he avoids execution by convincing the guards he’s Persian — not Jewish. Tasked with teaching Persian to the officer in charge of the camp’s kitchen, who dreams

of opening a restaurant in Iran after the war, Gilles invents a language to teach the eager German. When the two men’s unusual relationship begins to incite jealousy and suspicion, Gilles becomes acutely aware that one false move could expose him. 7:15pm.

February 10 at 7:15pm: Aulcie, an Israeli documentary, with subtitles, about Aulcie Perry, who was playing basketball in Harlem when scouts from Maccabi Tel Aviv spotted and signed him. A year later, he led the team to their first European Championship, converted to Judaism, became an Israeli citizen, and had a very public relationship with supermodel Tami Ben Ami. But behind the scenes, he had a growing drug addiction that culminated in his arrest and imprisonment. Since his release he has committed himself to uplifting those suffering from drug abuse and addiction.

February 14: Tiger Within, the story of the unlikely friendship between a troubled, homeless teen and a Holocaust survivor. With explicit language. One of two matinees during the Festival, the screening is at 3pm.

February 15: Latter Day Jew , a documentary that follows writer/comedian H. Alan Scott, a gay former Mormon who converted to Judaism and survived cancer, as he finds his spiritual path and prepares for his Bar Mitzvah. 7:15pm.

February 17: A Starry Sky Above the Roman Ghetto, an Italian production, with subtitles that tells the story of Sofia, who finds an old snapshot of a child. As details emerge — the child’s name, separation from her parents during a Gestapo raid, and rescue by a nun — Sofia commits to honoring the girl’s memory by staging an original play with classmates and friends from a nearby Jewish high school. 7:15pm.

February 22: Asia, an Israeli production about a woman who concentrates on her job as a nurse while her friend, Vika hangs out at the skate-park. Their routine is shaken when Vika’s health deteriorates rapidly and Asia must step in and become the mother Vika desperately needs. 7:15pm.

February 24: My Name is Sara, a Polish production, is based on the true-life story of a 13 year-old Polish Jew. After a grueling escape to the Ukrainian countryside, Sara steals her best friend’s Catholic identity and finds refuge in a small village, where she is taken in by a

farmer and his young wife. She soon discovers the dark secrets of her employers’ marriage, compounding her own great secret, her true identity. 7:15pm.

February 25: They Ain’t Ready For Me Yet, a documentary about Tamar Manasseh, the African American rabbinical student who is leading the fight against senseless killings on the south side of Chicago. Every day, Tamar, mother of two, sits on the corner of 75th St. & South Stewart Ave. in the Englewood section of Chicago, where poverty, unemployment, addiction, and violence are rampant. Tired of waiting for politicians to do something, Tamar took the situation into her own hands. A matinee, the screening is at 3pm.

February 27: Abe closes the festival with another matinee. The Israeli-Jewish side of his family calls him Avram, the Palestinian-Muslim side call him Ibrahim, and his first-generation American agnostic parents call him Abraham. But the 12-year-old kid from Brooklyn who loves food and cooking prefers just Abe, and tries to unite his family through his culinary skills. 3pm.

Star of ‘Hamilton’ Performs with Gulf Coast Symphony B

est known for her role as Angelica Schuyler in the musical Hamilton, Renée Elise Goldsberry will be performing with the Gulf Coast Symphony at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at on January 15.

Renée’s performance in Hamilton earned her a Tony Award, Grammy Award, Drama Desk Award, and Lucille Lortel Award. She received two Daytime Emmy nominations and two NAACP Image Award nominations for her portrayal of Evangeline Williamson, on ABC’s One Life to Live. Renee also received an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for her performance in the play Good People. She made her Broadway

debut as Nala in The Lion King, and portrayed Mimi in Rent on Broadway and in the film.

Renée can now be seen starring in the NBC series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and in Tina Fey’s new series for Peacock, Girls5eva. She starred in the acclaimed film Waves and in the hit Netflix series Altered Carbon.

The Naples Philharmonic Pops will simulcast six performances outdoors in Norris Garden at the Historic Palm Cottage in Naples, offering an alternative for those wary of attending a concert indoors in Hayes Hall at Artis—Naples.

Simulcasts of the Philharmonic’s ‘Respect: A Tribute to Aretha Franklin’ concerts will take place on January 20 & 21, ‘Frank Sinatra and Great Ladies of American Song’ concerts will take place February 10 & 11, and the final concerts, Broadway’s Leading Men’ will be March 31 & April 1. ArtFest Returns to Fort Myers Waterfront

ArtFest Fort Myers again brings acclaimed artists from around the nation to downtown Fort Myers, along the Caloosahatchee River, February 5 & 6. ArtFest will also host a special opening night party on February 4. Attendance to all events are free.

Opening night’s ‘Evening Under the Stars’ will afford attendees the opportunity to meet artists showcased in the art festival as they enjoy entertainment, food and beverages. The free event is 6-9pm.

The family-friendly event also features an Art Yard for children, sponsored by Publix, where kids can participate in Kids@Art, a community art project lead by local artists.

ArtFest also features Art Under 20, an art exhibition and competition for High School students, as well as Lee County High School students and professionals painting on pavement with chalk.

Attendees can purchase VIP tickets to ArtFest Fort Myers, which includes enjoying the opening night party in a VIP tent, with complimentary hors d’ouvres, wine, beer and live music and dancing; morning mimosas, coffee and treats; catered lunches, snacks, an open bar, and reserved parking.

expressionist artist Hunt Slonem through the end of February. The exhibition of colorful, animal-focused art, ‘Hunt Slonem’s Zoo, features works provided by Harmon-Meek Gallery, and will be on display through February.

Hunt Slonem is one of the few artists to have his work displayed in solo exhibitions on every continent but Antarctica during his lifetime. This, however, is Slonem’s first solo exhibition in a children’s museum.

“‘Hunt Slonem’s Zoo’ provides a fantastic opportunity for caregivers to talk with their children about works of art,” said Children’s Museum of Naples CEO, Dena Rae Hancock. “Our educators encourage adults to ask their children which piece is their favorite and why, identify the animals in each painting, and spot similarities and differences between them.”

The Children’s Museum of Naples holds one of the largest collections of artwork of any children’s museum in the country. All art displayed within the museum features either children or animals. HarmonMeek gallery has represented Hunt Slonem since 1996.

Selby Gardens Reunites Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens will spotlight the work of Robert Mapplethorpe, one of the most significant photographers of the 20th century, together with the poetry of legendary singer-songwriter and poet Patti Smith, in a special exhibition on view throughout the garden’s 15-acre Downtown Sarasota campus. The exhibition features a selection of Mapplethorpe’s photographs of orchids, hyacinths, and irises, and excerpts of Smith’s poems and lyrics on flowers and nature, in dialogue with new horticultural installations inspired by the two artists’ work.

‘Robert Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith: Flowers, Poetry, and Light’ is on view February 13-June 26. The Gardens will host an Evening with Patti Smith on February 15, a lecture and performance by Smith.

Mapplethorpe and Smith met in New York City in the summer of 1967. Their enduring relationship, through which

the two spent time as artistic collaborators, lovers, and ultimately friends, proved formative to each other’s creative practice and artistic output. ‘Flowers, Poetry, and Light’ reunites Mapplethorpe and Smith in a garden setting, presenting works by each inspired by nature during the counterculture movements of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Selby Gardens’ Conservatory, world renowned for its collection of orchids and bromeliads, will be reimagined as Mapplethorpe’s photography studio, complete with drop cloths and lights that will spotlight and frame living flowers, following the principles of balance and classicism embraced by the photographer. In the Museum of Botany & the Arts, a curatorial exploration of Mapplethorpe’s aesthetic strategies, influences, and practices in an exhibition display designed to evoke the artist’s apartment, featuring four iconic flower photographs by Mapplethorpe, from the Graphic Studio gravures including Orchid, Irises, and

Hyacinths, as well as two bustlength photographs of Ken Moody, one of Mapplethorpe’s most photographed subjects, holding an apple and palm frond respectively.

The installation will also include archival photos and period furnishings. Throughout the grounds and gardens, installations of floral displays inspired by these seminal photographs will be accompanied by a poetry walk of works by Patti Smith, excerpting verses from her poems and songs to provide moments of reflection within the garden and underscore the rich symbolism of flowers as the fruits of life, enticement, and rebirth.

Naples Zoo Showcases Supersized Animal Sculptures

Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is showcasing largerthan-life toy brick sculptures with their new traveling exhibit, ‘BrickLive Supersized Creatures,’ featuring more than 30 brick-built sculptures of nature’s ‘small and mighty’ species magnified into towering works of art. Guests will see a 12-foot tall tarantula, a 5-foot tall praying mantis, and a 4-foot tall honey badger. Sculptures will be on display throughout the Zoo.

‘BrickLive Supersized Creatures’, a sculpture exhibition, is on view thru April 17 at the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens.

Displayed near the sculptures will be colorful graphics featuring interesting facts and statistics about each piece, such as the size of each figure, how many bricks were used to build each one, and the amount of time it took to create each piece.

‘BrickLive Supersized Creatures’ is included in regular Zoo admission. This is the first time the exhibit will be featured in Florida.

Murals on Tour showcases work by four artists that address social inequities.

Bringing Color to a Wall Near You

“The truth is that the Fort Myers Mural Society creates murals to boost tourism, spur economic improvement, and increase walkability throughout Southwest Florida neighborhoods and communities.”

“WHEN PEOPLE FIRST LEARN about the Fort Myers Mural Society (FMMS), they think we are just an artistic organization,” explained FMMS Founder & Director Shari Shifrin, who owns Grand Illusion Creative Resources in Downtown Fort Myers. “The truth is that the Fort Myers Mural Society creates murals to boost tourism, spur economic improvement, and increase walkability throughout Southwest Florida neighborhoods and communities.”

She adds, “We work with stakeholders to learn the history, environment, and culture of their area to ensure that the mural captures their special flavor. Communities all over are creating murals to promote tourism and enhance economic impacts, meaning you now can find public art in almost every United States municipality. The Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau is our biggest sponsor and we received four of their marketing grants to promote our mission of what makes Southwest Florida unique from other parts of the country.”

Inauspicious Beginning

The Fort Myers Mural Society formed in 2013 from an inauspicious beginning. “We started because I received a fine for painting a mural,” expains Shari, laughing at the recollection. “The City of Fort Myers fined me because I did not know there was a City ordinance against mural painting. So I spent the next two years negotiating with Fort Myers City Council over the benefits, including financially, of what public art like murals brings to a community, doing so three minutes at a time in ‘Public Comment.’ In 2015, the City Council finally amended the ordinance to allow murals.”

FMMS “to create murals to let people know about our performing arts, culture and history,” says Shari, “so we do not lose that precious link to the past while creating visual interpre tations about earlier eras that initially brought people and tourism to Southwest Florida. For example, the FMMS did the huge McCollum Hall murals on Martin Luther King Junior Blvd. The Travel Channel recently filmed a segment on McCollum Hall, as even many longtime Fort Myers residents don’t know that as far back as the 1940s, McCollum Hall was a regular stop on what was known as the ‘Chitlin’ Circuit’ for African-American musicians and performers, like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Not many Southern communities can claim that distinction.”

Another recent FMMS mural is a tribute to the late local DJ Griff Gotti, whose real name was Conrad Buchanan. “DJ Griff, who passed away in March 2020 from Covid-19, was one of the first and youngest Lee County victims of the pandemic,” Shari offered. “DJ Griff was an important part of the Downtown Fort Myers fabric. He was a terrific representative of our local culture and it was important to us all that his memory did not fade away, so when you walk past his mural, your reaction is, ‘Wow!,’ as it really captures his zest for life as well as the Downtown vibe. and Hispanics in what on the surface seems like an overwhelmingly older white community, as it is that diversity that molded our community in the past through today.”

Shari emphasized that FMMS works expand well past the Downtown Fort Myers neighborhood. “We have, for instance, many terrific murals on Fort Myers Beach. To learn all our Southwest Florida mural locations with pictorial and literal descriptions, check out our upcoming new and free app, Art Stumble, that should launch in January. The more people who can access our current murals through Art Stumble, the more interest it will generate toward creating more murals!”

Painting a mural enhances an artist’s reputation, explains Shari, “because of the high profile locations where so many people see them, like restaurants, bars, businesses and even people’s houses. In fact, finding a businessowner or neighborhood association that wants to commission a mural is easy; the hard part is often working with and through the various local governments, as their red tape can take all the fun out of it! Once someone contacts the FMMS about a potential project, we put out a call to our artist members to see who is available, as murals are an excellent way for them to create more work for themselves.” She adds, “Our art-

Broadening Artistic Horizons

She explains that there is no specific mural size, “They can be as small as a utility box while the McCollum Hall murals are 8 feet high and several hundred feet long. Murals can be on a building, fence, wall, or many other surfaces and they all qualify as public art, but the one thing they cannot be is a sign! Many communities have ordinances that differentiate between murals and signs, but the simplest difference is murals do not carry advertisements. So if you see one promoting a store, for example, that is a sign.”

As for what makes a perfect mural ‘canvas?’ “Anything,” she exclaims.

“Our artists are great at adapting to any surface; if it is stucco, we fill it in, and for bricks and other types, we use mural cloths, and we know the proper paint for every surface. Each FMMS artist is a professional, with many of us having Master’s Degrees in Fine Arts.”

Once the Fort Myers Mural Society completes

An important FMMS component is its work with children, teenagers, and art students. “We partnered with the Florida SouthWestern State College Honor Society on the Music Legends project and the High School National Art Honor Society for a Halloween project,” Shari says. “We offer high school and college internships and many students work directly with our local professionals, and that is experience you cannot buy. professional artist.”

Another thing the FMMS does, for professionals and students, is offering art mural painting conferences outside our area as well as bringing artists from other regions here through a mural exchange program to discuss their art and techniques. “They come to us and we go to their place,” explains Shari. “In this way, those artists mentor our entire organization, because how you paint a mural in New York, Philadelphia or Connecticut is vastly different than in Southwest Florida due to factors like weather and surface conditions. When you learn how to paint properly in faraway places, that really broadens your artistic horizons.”

Shari shared that the FMMS has a simple goal for its future: “To expand beyond the com

we participate in live painting events and chalk festivals and auction off pieces at charity functions. The bottom line is that our final product is not about the FMMS but the murals, to enhance the community in which we live while improving the economy and visitor experience.”

There is a simple reason why murals appeal to art lovers and the general public alike, claims Shari. “They are larger than life! Murals are bigger than we are, carry a huge impact and do not require much interpretation. They improve the mood of everybody who views them because they are bright and colorful and reflect the culture, history, and environment of your neighborhood. As The Baker Museum at Artis–Naples enters its third decade with a newly expanded and remodeled facility, Courtney McNeil continues to engage the public with compelling exhibitions and programming. I wanted to talk with her about her team, the important relationship with Jay & Patty Baker, and an environmental artist who will compel us to reclaim the earth.

Tell me about starting as the new director right at the cusp of the pandemic.

COURTNEY MCNEIL: I was announced as the new director in 2020, but didn’t physically come onboard until January 2021. This has been an incredibly challenging and trying time. Professionally, it’s been difficult to know how to continuously adapt and to know what decisions must be made for the safety of our community and our workers, and how to salvage the essential function of a museum and continue to present meaningful art exhibitions. There is no better set of people to be weathering such a crisis with than creative museum professionals. All my team’s creativity came to bear in the planning that had to be done, in the pivoting and the repositioning that were necessary in order to realize the wonderful second half of the season that I got to enjoy here in Naples and the plans for this current season as well.

Can you briefly discuss some of the longer exhibitions on display?

‘Subject Matters: Selections from the Permanent Collection’ was already on view when I started, and I made the decision to extend it

until March so folks would have an opportunity to explore. However, attendance during Covid was low.

What brought about the exhibition, ‘Baseball Heroes’? Was this being developed for some time?

This exhibition of the baseball heroes Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Derek Jeter had been in the works before the pandemic. When I was hired, I knew this show needed to happen and I also knew that no real planning had been able to take place. The analysis and examination of the objects to determine what would be logistically necessary to mount them for display in the gallery could not happen in person because these items were in a private residence. So, planning had to be put on hold. We started working on it back in the spring. We contracted an amazing exhibition design team who works for museums all over the country. Unlike a traditional art exhibition, where beautiful art is hung on the wall, these incredible baseball objects needed additional context and more of an elaborate display. We had a fantastic guest curator, Nick Clark, and he like me is a huge museum nerd and baseball fan. He did the research and the writing for items you see in the gallery. We had all the casework for the exhibition like the plexiglass bonnets that protect all the objects, the pedestals, and the display shelves custom fabricated. Our hope was that even people who didn’t love baseball would enjoy this exhibition.

What was the installation process like for such a dynamic exhibition of baseball gloves, letters, contracts, photos, video, and even passports of Joe Namath and Marylin Monroe?

It was a huge effort to say the least. A group of four or five graphic installers were in the galleries for about a week just putting up

all the large-scale photographic reproductions that populate that exhibition. It was an incredibly complicated show logistically, but what was easy was working with the fantastic collectors like Jay & Patty Baker. They made the collection in their home available to my team for the many days it took to examine all the objects to determine the best mounting mechanism, record all notes and details of the condition and pack them up safely for transport to the museum. They were a true joy to work with. Mr. Baker carries knowledge of every single one of the objects in his baseball collection in his head. We were able to in clude just a tiny fraction of what he knows in the interpretation that you see in the gallery to be able to weave together a story about the five players who are the subject of the exhibition.

Regarding the Bakers... I love their history together, especially her experience in the art world.

There is a 17-minute vid eo that contains an interview with both Bakers where they talk about collecting, what started them in collecting, what drives them and their overall collecting philosophy. I want every visitor to the museum to feel like they’ve had a chat with the Bakers. They have such an infectious zest for life — a wonderful energy, a real passion — and I wanted visitors to the exhibition to experience that.

Why do you think the ‘Love in All Forms’ collection is an important exhibit?

This exhibit really helps to round out the full picture of who Patty & Jay Baker are. What you see in that exhibition is that zest for life. Both collect art that both of them like. Patty says, ‘They both have to like it or it does not find a home with them.’ Beyond that there are no hard and fast rules. So, what you have in this collection is a joyful riot of color, and energy, and life in a way

that defies traditional art historical narratives and chronologies. We echoed that philosophy in the installation. You have a Claude Monet painting adjacent to a Jeff Koons sculpture. This is not a pairing that you see very often, and it was such a joy to be able to create some of these pairings in our galleries here that echoed the philosophy of the collectors who acquired these works. Is there anything new you would like to share about the three artists — Gonzolo Fuenmayor, Akiko Kotani, and Noelle Mason — who are the focus of the ‘Florida Contemporary’ exhibit?

This exhibit was curated by Dr. Rangsook Yoon, who had been in conversations with these artists pre-pandemic. Although it was frustrating to have a project delayed because of the pandemic, it gave us an opportunity to observe these artists and their evolution, so some of the work you see in the galleries is work that was created during the pandemic. For example, Gonzolo Fuenmayor drawings are usually these massive epically scaled charcoal drawings on these huge sheets of paper, but because he couldn’t access his studio during the lockdown, he was working in smaller size paper and creating smaller drawings that he never would have tried otherwise. So, those fantastic smaller drawings created during the pandemic are alongside the large oversize work he is best known for. I think that artistic evolution and the opportunity to reflect on how the pandemic influenced artists’ careers and artistic choices is an interesting component of the ‘Florida Contemporary’ exhibit this year.

Pam Longobardi is a plasticist which sounds like a cool, post-modern term for using art and recovered plastic. Why do you feel that this installation is important?

I curated this exhibition and had the great fortune to first get acquainted with Pam’s work

when I was in Georgia. She is an Atlanta artist and I thought that her work and her interest in the environment was such a natural fit for our community here in Naples, because of the truly spectacular natural environment. When you are looking at the artwork that Pam Longobardi creates, you are only seeing a tiny fraction of her artistic practice. That’s because her work is not just about the objects she makes, but the process by which the plastic objects that comprise her work are collected and the way she works with communities to inspire beach cleanups, shedding light on the affect of plastic and consumption on the natural environment. It is important for art museums to be a place where communities can gather together to talk about and to think about the issues that face us as a society today. Certainly, humankind’s effect on the natural environment is one of those issues that cannot be ignored.

I love that this exhibition is partnering with the Naples Conservancy. Events that happened already include the community day, the beach cleanup and ahead in January, Pam is hosting a talk at The Baker Museum.

For conversations like this to happen and to get the attention that they deserve, partnerships with other organizations in the community are essential. It was a joy to be introduced to the folks at the Conservancy through this project and to hear their early and enthusiastic support for the exhibition and all the components that it entails.

In November, they had two experts from their staff speak on a panel along with Pam Longobardi looking at both scientific and artistic perspectives on the impact of plastics on the environment. After the panel was over, Pam went down to the front lawn outside of the museum and she and two of her assistants created a temporary site-specific installation using plastics that she had culled in a beach cleanup at Clam Pass Beach. Pam has been down to visit and meet with my team several times and every time she comes to Naples she visits and cleans beaches. We used these found plastic objects from Naples beaches along with a few objects that Pam brought from other beaches to create a beautiful installation in the shape of a compass to sort of question what direction we are heading and what our future holds. It

was a community-based installation, so the folks who were at the discussion panel were taking the plastic pieces and helping her team arrange them into a compass. It was very hands-on. People were talking about what each object was, where it came from, and

these wonderful informal engaged conversations were taking place. •

aples-based artist Holly Manneck creates her self-described ‘New American Pop Art’ to express her views and bring an array of images to life within each piece she produces. Her works reflect our culture past and present while also adding that representative layer of Holly’s own technique and individuality. The process typically begins with historical press photos or her own photography; then she adds a layer of imagery by painting over them.

Holly’s vivid, thought-provoking creations line the walls of her Naples Art District studio. Matted canvases are stacked neatly for sale while an array of paint in hundreds of different colors vie for attention in the area where Manneck’s works come to life on canvas after their humble digital beginnings. Technology plays an integral part of her creative process in a profession that often is an antithesis to the screen.

“I don’t run away from technology; I like to incorporate it into my work and our vocabulary,” Holly told me over the phone a couple of days earlier. “The old masters were always doing something new and trying to push the envelope. They were always creative and experimenting. That’s what draws me to art. I’m extremely curious, and it suits my personality. I like people discovering things in my art.”

“Sometimes, I’ll see an image that I really like and hold onto it for several years before I implement it into my work. Sometimes that image grows with you and becomes a new painting.”

Discovering Manneck’s art is something that’s been happening for well over 20 years. Her award-winning work has been part of an impressive lineup of juried shows throughout Southwest Florida, her summer Montana home base, and many shows in Grand Cayman. Her life of traveling the world represents the international flair in her work. Being an artist, surprisingly, wasn’t her initial career goal. Traveling was more her first love.

“I had always been interested in different cultures and traveling. Pop art really covers a lot of that. It’s about what we value in our culture and common places and just things that we all experience and ideas, too. Pop culture can be political and always changing,” says Manneck.

Born and raised in Vermont, Holly attended the University of Vermont, where she participated in a cultural immersion program to study in Norway. Fascinated by learning a different culture and language, she returned the following summer to work in Oslo before returning to finish school and earn a degree in social work.

However, the traveling bug had its firm grip on Holly. Rather than jump into

a job with the Department of Children & Families or study for her Masters, she followed its nudge and took a job first on a cruise ship based out of Miami, followed by several years with Norwegian Cruise Lines. It was during this time that she met her German husband. Upon returning to the States, Holly looked for a profession that she could do while traveling. Graphic design seemed to be a good option, plus photography and fine art, all of which she studied at Plymouth State University in New Hamphire.

Then it was time for another move, this time to Grand Cayman. “That was another international culture there,” Holly remembers. “When we came back to the states, I went from abstract painting to blending all the skills I had learned in school with photography. It was a way of expressing myself, my ideas, and how I saw everything.”

This new approach became the real turning point in her life. As Holly pondered what she enjoyed doing, like listening to the news and keeping up with what was around her, she realized that she could adequately share and express her experiences and point of view through

pop art. By incorporating a variety of techniques like photography, fine art printmaking, and regular painting, Holly had found her niche.

“It’s a kind of silkscreen method,” Manneck shares, that starts with a capture of an image on her computer, then its transfered onto a canvas through a fine art method called ‘mono-printing’, which is used to make unique prints. Then it’s time for the real magic as Holly lets go with her vision, painting her picture upon it.

Manneck appreciates the diversity in her audience. Where younger people are typically attracted to the color and technology in her work, the older set might have a fond memory attached to the original image enhanced by Holly’s expressionism.

“I’ve developed this technique that works for me, from all the art I’ve learned about,” Holly expresses, “I don’t know what technique you’d call it. I don’t use paper. It’s a style I developed myself, so I don’t know what category to put it in.” It’s self-expression in its purest form, one might say. “People might interpret it in a different way. It’s a common experience to share with them. Others may see things in a different way than I do.”

Paintings involving women are some of Manneck’s more famous creations. She starts with an image of a woman, such as Marilyn Monroe or Coco Chanel, and applies images to the background. She may change the face in a particular image as she tries to portray women in an empowering manner. “I always want to share women in a strong light. You might remember a movie or a time that makes you reflect on certain times that you had forgotten about.” Some of Holly’s works might take you back to that particular special moment.

Manneck appreciates the diversity in her audience. Where younger people are typically attracted to the color and technology in her work, the older set might have a fond memory attached to the original image enhanced by Holly’s expressionism.

A perusal of her pop art is a clear explanation of her voice. In ‘4 Fab Pop Stars’, a portrait of The Beatles gets her treatment with an added background of tootsie pop wrappers in sharp blue contrast to their black and white outfits. ‘Diversity’ is a close-up view of a pack of Crayola crayons, but the word diversity is placed where the name would be, with the saying ‘world color made in America’ beneath. In an ode to fashion magazines, ‘Fun in the Sun’ takes a Harper’s Bazaar cover, and a layer of vivid colors makes it her own.

“Sometimes, I’ll see an image that I really like and hold onto it for several years before I implement it into my work. Sometimes that image grows with you and becomes a new painting,” Holly articulates. Other times, thoughts combine for a new creation. About her piece ‘Kravitz and Mickey’, she says, “I was doing a piece with Lenny Kravitz, and I was thinking about Mickey Mouse and his birthday. I thought about doing celebrities wearing Mickey Mouse celebrating his 100th birthday.” As I am a fan of Kravitz’s music, this one stood out to me while visiting her studio. With its bright blue and yellow hues, it’s a definite conversation piece at an impressive 5 feet wide x 4 feet tall.

Large portraits are Holly’s preferred size. Each panel of her triple panel portrait of Clint Eastwood, ‘The Great Unforgiven One’, is 10 feet high x four feet wide — a total of 12 feet wide x 10 feet high. “It’s such a statement!” she exclaims. “I kept the subject simple, but the size of the image was impressive.” Another of her paintings is of a woman coming out of one of those old red telephone booths. It’s called ‘You Rang’ because she had an ‘S’ on her belt (like Superman). “That was to empower women that we can do anything,” Holly affirms.

“When I paint people, I end up learning about them. It honors their artistry also. I learn all these things about these people I do,” Holly reflects. She recalls learning all about David Bowie’s artistry and music when painting a series about him a few years ago.

After a life of traveling and experiencing the world, creating pop art has proven to be the right groove to both reflect her life and growth as an artist, and the audience agrees. Holly’s art is constantly in demand and enjoyed

in galleries and private collections everywhere. There’s no slowing down for her, either. The urge to express herself is constant.

“I feel so empty when I can’t create something. It’s always been in me. I think sometimes life’s experiences bring you to the point of painting. It took me a long time to get there, but it’s just worked out for me. I’m very fortunate that I’m doing something I love to do.” •

Best Albums of 2021

IT’S ALWAYS BEEN DIFFICULT picking the ‘best’ albums of the year. Tastes vary widely and, especially these days with so many streaming services, websites and the ability for individual artists to release their own music, it’s impossible to hear every artist and every release. These are the albums that I have enjoyed most throughout 2021 —some probably on many other ‘best of’ lists and some by lesser-known artists that are worthy of your attention. Check them out on your favored streaming service.

Jon Batiste We Are

This is the album I found myself listening to more than any other from the day it was released to today. Batiste received eight of his eleven Grammy nominations for this album and four songs on it: ‘Freedom,’ ‘‘I Need You’, ‘Cry’ and ‘Movement 11’ — for overall Best Album and Best Record as well as in the Traditional R&B, American Roots and Contemporary Classical categories. And that doesn’t even include tracks like ‘Tell the Truth’ (reminiscent of Stevie Wonder’s best albums of the 1970s), ‘Boyhood’ and ‘Adulthood’ (soulful raps with smart lyrics), and ‘Show Me the Way’ (think Marvin Gaye meets Silk Sonic).

A remarkably joyous set of songs showcasing Batiste’s formidable talents as a musician, arranger, vocalist and performer. After releasing a few exceptional jazz albums, with We Are he has entered a new musical stratosphere few have attained.

Cande y Paulo Cande y Paulo

Although half of this stunning album by Argentinians Cande Buasso and Paulo Carrizo is sung in Spanish, including the song that made them famous, ‘Barro Tal Vez’, it is the covers that stand out. Leonard Cohen’s biting but beautiful ‘Treaty,‘ George Gershwin’s classic ‘Summertime,’ and Neil Young’s playful ‘Sugar Mountain’ are impressive, but it is ‘I Fall in Love Too Easily’ and ‘The Thrill is Gone,’ where Cande matches Chet Baker’s versions with heartwrenchingly melancholy vocals, that are the best. Not that the Spanish songs are not

wonderful. ‘Deja Atras’ (‘Walk on By’) is especially delicious, with its infectious bossa nova beat.

Produced by Larry Klein, fans of Melody Gardot, Madeleine Peyroux and Joni Mitchell (all whom he has also produced) will love this Argentinian duo’s soft passion.

Charley Crockett Music City USA

With a storied past and a long career as a street musician in New York and New Orleans, Crockett has released six outstanding albums in the last five years. His newest, Music City U.S.A., is as good as the others, chock full of catchy tunes, heartfelt lyrics, soulful singing and enough twang to remind you that he’s a Texan through and through. His music is unquestionably country (owing much to the likes of George Jones and Johnny Cash), but is heavily infused with the blues as well. The album boasts one great song after another, with no two alike. ‘The World Just Broke My Heart,’ ’Just So You Know,’ and ‘Honest Fight’ feature his doleful drawl. ‘I Need Your Love’ and ‘I Won’t Cry’ are buoyed with horns. ‘Are We Lonesome Yet’ is fired up with a fiddle and pedal steel guitar, and he even uses a banjo to fire up ‘Round This World.’

These are songs that sound like they could be by the legends of the genre and Crockett performs them with a clear reverence for those greats. He calls his sound ‘Gulf & Western’ and that fairly sums up his unique brand of country blues.

Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert & Jon Randall The Marfa Tapes

Nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Album, the album was recorded quickly in that remote, yet arty, West Texas town by three of the state’s best troubadours. Sparse, simple and soulful, the tracks are incredibly intimate and seemingly spontaneous even though several are years old (a few recorded for, but not included on past Lambert albums). They even include between song chatter to make you feel like you’ve been invited to a special session.

Crockett calls his sound ‘Gulf & Western’ and that fairly sums up his unique brand of country blues.

Sparse, simple and soulful, ‘The Marfa Tapes’ is incredibly intimate.

Highlights among a strong set are ‘In His Arms,’ sung by Lambert, a gorgeous lament, Jack Ingram’s woeful ‘I Don’t Like It’ and the mournful and sweet ‘Waxahatchee.’ But they can have fun, too, like on Guy Clark’s ‘Homegrown Tomatoes’ and the classic, ‘Am I Right or Amarillo.’ These emotional songs sound like they could have been written by fellow Texan songwriting icon, Townes van Zandt, as high a compliment as you can give. A strong collection of beautiful songs enhanced with excellent harmonies. The Best Country Album of the Year.

Hayes Carll You Get It All

Carll is one of the brightest stars in the Americana scene, making music with the finesse of folk, the swagger of rock and the twang of country. Influenced by the likes of John Prine, Steve Earle, and Kris Kristofferson, his songs stir your heart as much as provoke your mind, with wisdom (‘If It Was Up to Me’) and wit (‘Any Other Way’ and ‘Different Boats’). He can write with dark humor (‘Nice Things’ and ‘She’ll Come Back to Me’) and intense insight (‘Help Me Remember’ and ‘In the Meantime,’ a duet with Brandi Carlisle) — all with a charming casual confidence.

As Carll sings in ‘Different Boats,’ “We get what we are given/And we hope that it floats.” With this album, as the title says, you get it all.

Adia Victoria

A Southern Gothic

Barack Obama named ‘Magnolia Blues’ as one of the songs on his 2021 year-end playlist and it’s no surprise. The album is of and about the South. A native of South Carolina, Adia delves into the darker sides of life in the ‘Dixie,’ which could be especially hellish for Black women.

This is roots music — dense music with deep roots. Some songs sound almost like the field recordings made about 100 years ago by musicologist Alan Lomax or some of the earliest blues records by the likes of Memphis Minnie, Bukka White, Bessie Smith, and Charley Patton. On an album of otherwise original songs, she includes a cover of Blind Willie McTell’s ‘You Was Born to Die’ (with Jason Isbell on

guitar). In addition to ‘Magnolia Blues’ standouts are ‘Mean-Hearted Woman’ and ‘My Oh My.

Fans of Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, Allison Russell, and even Gillian Welch will enjoy an artist and musician with similar influences, sensibilities and styles. Music that is direct and unadorned, superb in its simplicity and strength.

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss Raise the Roof

It’s been 14 years since Plant & Krauss released their Grammy-winning album, Raising Sand, and Raise the Roof picks up where they left off — making intense music steeped in the most dramatic of American roots and music. Again exquisitely produced by T Bone Burnett, the album finds the duo offering their unique interpretations of songs by Lucinda Williams’ (‘Can’t Let Go’), Merle Haggard (‘Going Where the Lonely Go’), the Everly Brothers (‘The Price of Love’), Charley Patton (‘Last Kind Words Blues’), and Allen Toussaint (‘Trouble with My Lover’), among other lesser-know gems such as ‘You Led Me to the Wrong,’ by long-overlooked Olla Belle Reed.

No one sings with Robert Plant’s wild abandon and few sing with the cool sweetness of Krauss, making their duets a mix of very striking solos and incredible harmonies. Another album destined for many ‘best of’ lists.

Melissa Carper Daddy’s Country Gold

Carper has been called the bluegrass Billie Holiday and the country Janis Joplin, but Daddy’s Country Gold makes it clear that the bassist and vocalist is very much her own woman. Infused with western swing and old-timey jazz, the album is full of original songs filled with whimsy and tenderness. ‘Makin’ Memories’ is the standout, a hilarious jazzy sendup about drinking a bit too much but not really caring. ‘I Almost Forgot About You,’ ‘Back When,’ ‘It’s Better If You Didn’t Know,’ and ‘You’re Still My Love’ are clever laments about love lost. The swinging ‘Would You Like to Get Some Goats’ is a fun song only Carper would write.

Not unlike a female Leon Redbone, Carper offers much needed good time music that swings through these hard and crazy times. Her daddy should be proud.

An album that incorporates the stylings of American roots music, from the stringbands of Appalachia to the twang of Nashville to Cajun rhythms of Louisiana. Songs like ‘Leaving on Our Minds,’ ‘My Teardrops Say,’ ‘Biding All My Time,’ and ‘Will You’ explore the themes of regret and heartbreak. But not all songs are forlorn, as ‘Good and Gone’ and ‘On Account of You’ are a bit more upbeat and hopeful.

Although a collection of mostly moody and melancholy songs, Leva’s sweet vocals and the outstanding musicianship make for an enjoyable album by a young duo on the rise.

A Tribute to the Duets of Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton

This release pairs the son of Richard & Linda Thompson (of 1960s British folk-rock legends, Fairport Convention) with the daughter of Geoff & Maria Muldaur (he was in 1960s folk group Jim Kweskin & the Jug Band, she had a big hit in 1973 with ‘Midnight at the Oasis’). Some 50 years ago, Parton & Wagoner released 13 hits, when he was one of country music’s biggest stars and she was just starting her career. Although only four songs, it is a touching tribute, including two songs by Jack Clement (‘Just Someone I Used to Know,’ more familiar as a hit for George Jones), and ‘Just Between You and Me,’ also a hit for Charley Pride), as well as ‘Once More,’ originally a hit in 1956 by Dusty Owens & Donna Darlene and The Rodeo Boys. Dolly’s own ‘Put It Off Until Tomorrow,’ showcases her remarkable songwriting skills.

Teddy has released a slew of acclaimed solo albums and continues his winning streak here with an all too brief compilation of timeless tunes carefully honored with gorgeous harmonies that stand up to the originals. •
