“We’ve come up with a good formula in which to introduce people to the trained voice. We do a cabaret evening to introduce Cole Porter and the like with a trained voice. We’ve also introduced a jazz trio.”
by Julie Clay
Opera is Alive on the Gulf B
EEN
TO THE OPERA LATELY?Chances
are if you went locally, it could very well have been a Gulfshore Opera production. Since its inception in 2015, it has grown exponentially, consistently presenting top quality opera theater and classical vocal music to enthusiastic audiences in Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties. Envisioned and helmed by General Director and 30year opera veteran, Steffanie Pearce, Gulfshore Opera strives to nurture up-and-coming talent, present professional productions and give back to the community via ongoing musical education programs.
Ms. Pearce states that in order for the organization to have grown like it has and effectively serve the tricounty area, it was important to have a period of market testing and development in order to pinpoint who their best partners and venues would be. “We’ve looked at audience development in areas that have never had a classical vocal element. We’ve come up with a good formula in which to introduce people to the trained voice,” she says, “We do a cabaret evening to introduce Cole Porter and the like with a trained voice. We’ve also introduced a jazz trio.” Brandon Robertson, now a fulltime jazz professor at FGCU, was a founding member of the trio, and offered recommendations for the other two. Pearce shares that the trio was formed specifically to work with Gulfshore Opera on two different concert series featuring Gulfshore Tenors and Cabaret. The Opera offers all three as separate performances outside of the major productions.
To be a regional opera company has been a goal since day one, says Ms. Pearce, “From the beginning of this company I have always envisioned that we have a sort of central home in each of the three counties that we serve. My goal is to sell 1,000 tickets to each location for the larger show. We’ve put a lot of energy into developing larger audiences from Marco up to Port Charlotte. We’re going to continue to do the smaller concerts and venues. We’re going to ask them to get in their car and go to the gala and to the grand opera program.”
She adds, “We have seven distinct communities that we serve: Marco Island, Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Sanibel, Punta Gorda, and Port Charlotte. They all have their own newspapers and venues, and don’t like to travel outside their district.” No worries, she has a plan for that —and it involves a long-envisioned move in the 2020 season to the Barbara B. Mann Performance Hall for large-scale productions. Pearce shares, “The really big productions need the full-scale theatre so that’s a natural growth to go to the larger professional space. [Currently] we go to the islands and all the way up to Port Charlotte with community concerts. We use a flexible set and it’s easy to travel.”
Taking the stigma out of opera and exposing
people to the medium is also a big part of the equation, as well as affordable tickets.
Plans are in place to literally transport patrons in for the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall shows. “We’re going to coordinate party buses to go from outlying areas, serve champagne, etc.” Steffanie confirms that their initial B.B. Mann production is La Boheme , happening March 18, 2020, with tickets slated to go on sale this July 2019. This development opens a new world of production opportunity, Steffanie enthuses. “The height and the width of the sets and everything are going to be great. It’s the best venue for opera in the region! It has technical elements that are more for opera. There’s fly space above the stage so you can fly elements in and out. You can have these backdrops that are 40 feet tall that can go up and down in two minutes!”
The current season is going strong with another exciting addition to the Gulfshore Opera lineup: the Professional Artists-in-Residence program. Steffanie explains, “We bring in nationally recognized, New Yorkmanaged artists for the January-April season. They do a variety of programs. First, they do a more casual concert with jazz. Then they do a series called Taste of Opera. We’re doing that in all three counties. We go to a private country club, do a dinner, and there are sets in between courses of the dinner. It’s a social thing and a concert. By the time we get to March and a big production they would have been introduced to the artists socially and as talent.”
Pearce voices her initial concern that audiences would get tired of seeing the same singers perform multiple times, but the response has been overwhelmingly positive to these hard-working, young and ‘easy on the eyes’ professionals. Along those lines, Pearce notes a trend toward hiring singers who look appropriate for their characters, “Voice comes first, but I want our audience to be moved by the portrayal of the characters’ relationships as well as the beauty of their voices. It is much easier to become emotionally engaged with a couple who really look like they could be in love!” They’ve hit it off so well with audiences that many patrons are now Facebook friends with the artists!
Currently, there are seven musicians on the Artists roster, including Grammy-nominated soprano Chelsea Basler, tenor lead Zackery Morris, soprano Camille Ortiz, mezzo soprano Lauryn Kay, bass James Harrington, and baritone Paul La Rosa. Aged in range from 28-38, all have completed higher education with most holding Masters and/or Doctorate degrees. They have also accomplished multiple apprenticeship programs and participated in numerous, highly-acclaimed productions. Pearce adds that additional professionals come in to portray specialty roles, like Tony Dillon, who played the lead

role in Gulfshore Opera’s Don Pasquale in February’s production.
Although the season has already started, audiences still have several opportunities to catch Gulfshore Opera in action, with a range of performances for people to enjoy throughout the region. “Generally speaking we have two categories,” says Steffanie, “We have community concerts, then productions with costumes, sets, orchestra, etc.” Among the offerings, audiences can look forward to a Songs of Ireland concert and dinner on March 14 at St. Leo Church Parish Life Center in Bonita Springs. They’ll perform La Traviata in this location as well as in Port Charlotte at the Cultural Center Theatre.
For those hesitant about attending opera for fear of the language barrier, Gulfshore Opera has that covered! Pearce shares how their larger performances feature surtitles projected above the screen behind the performers. She describes it as somewhat of a “blow-by-blow common language translation of exactly what the singers are singing at the time.” Recalling how back in the 90s, when she was performing, they attempted to perform in English, but it never quite had the same effect.
“If we are singing a song or an aria, that will be translated so the audience will be there for the whole message,” Ms. Pearce attests, “We
just invested in our very own projector. We can project on a wall or screen wherever we are.”
Gulfhore Opera remains very much committed to community engagement via Harmony Choir, their program serving disadvantaged children, offering them a chance to learn how to sing and perform opera. Pearce explains, “We’re very devoted to the social enrichment element, being more than entertainment and making a meaningful contribution to the community. It has a lot of enthusiasm among our patrons. We’re really hoping for more support for the public funding. We’re up to about 200 kids in the program now. We started out with 28 kids and now we have six chapters in three counties. They will be singing on the community day at ArtisNaples in May.”
Looking ahead, Pearce is eschewing a build-

She confirms that it’s already been brought up to the newly opened Southwest Florida Community Foundation Collaboratory in downtown Fort Myers. “I would like a space for nonprofit performing arts organizations. All kinds of organizations need a place to rehearse.”
Ms. Pearce adds a final thought, “It seems to be an exciting time for the arts in the tricounty area. The city’s talking about new performing arts venues. Punta Gorda’s even talking about a nice new theater. Let’s nurture the organizations that are here now. Opera is just one of the things that a mature cultural community has.” •

Darrell Nutt’s Music Podcast N
ESTLED BETWEEN A SUBURBANneighborhood, near the racket of the busy city street we call Tamiami Trail, and within walking distance of Page Field, sits an innocuous office complex tucked away from the hustle and bustle of life. All the way at the rear of the plaza, you can find Definition Media, home of Music Studio Live, a podcast unlike others. Hosted by Darrell Nutt and Sarah Hadeka, Music Studio Live is bridging the gap between national and international musicians to local hopefuls, educating the masses through interviews and performances, and exposing how the professionals go from just starting out to where they are today. Through their raw interview style, Darrell and Sarah provide an entertaining platform where the local musician and general enthusiast can learn about new music, musicians, how to hone their own craft, and just how many true professionals actually swing through our little corner of the world.
As I pull up on an early Sunday morning, all is quiet minus a few obvious musicians unloading gear from a van and busily carrying said gear through a glass entrance and into one of the office suites. I follow them in. This must be it. Once inside, it becomes more obvious I’m in the right place. The room has been prepped and the music equipment is ready to roll. Monitors and microphones, guitars and amps, lights and action. Darrell Nutt and Sarah Hadeka, our hosts, greet me warmly. Darrell introduces me to their subject for this episode, Letters From Jett, and directs me to a chair where I can sit and watch the scene unfold.

few funny stories and some laughs. The band throws another song down right on cue while the photographer and videographer shoot away.
In between there is very little downtime, and before you know it, everyone is shaking hands, packing up and moving on. There is more work to do, and these guys just stopped in to join the fun. Behind them, the photographers gather their own gear, say their own goodbyes, and luckily only have to shuffle themselves down the hallway to their own suite. All is at once quiet in the studio with Darrell, Sarah, and myself moving into place. We settle in, and I finally get my chance to interview the interviewers.
Darrell is a drummer first and foremost, yet over the last ten years has also been a producer at many different studios, and now for his own, Definition Media. This is where the magic of the podcast is recorded. Darrell had the idea about a year ago. As an experiment, he put the idea in writing on Facebook to see what people’s reaction would be and instantly he had over 200 comments. The overwhelming opinion was he should proceed. “Everybody said yes, you should do this, you’d be perfect for it. You have the studio. You know video work. You have all the stuff, just do it.” So he did.
Each episode requires getting everything wired, planning out angles of where to take video from, building new audio inputs, and adjusting everybody’s headphone mix. Aside from audio and video, there is also preparing what to ask the group.
It’s obvious everyone is excited to get started. A photographer and videographer pile in, and before I know it there are nine people in the one room studio. They make it all look so easy. Everyone organizes flawlessly and pumps out a few tunes for the camera. Darrell and Sarah sit in on what seems like an impromptu performance, without missing a beat, and after just a few takes they move on to the interview portion of their show. Their subjects are friendly and open, talking all about what it is they do, their grueling schedule, how they pull off their craft, a
Darrell says when the idea for the podcast came up, he didn’t feel his speaking skills would be enough to carry the podcast alone. He needed somebody with charisma, who could fill multiple chairs, and Sarah fit the bill. “She sings, writes her own songs, plays piano and acoustic guitar, and had a great personality,” Darrell explains.
In February of 2018, Darrell and Sarah finally took the idea to the studio for a test run. The idea was to see what they would look and sound like during production. It was a long ten-hour day, but they found themselves laughing the whole time. It was then they both realized what a good fit they were as a team. Sarah, outside of the podcast, has also been busy for the past seven years as a busy working musician out of Naples. She carries this title plus mom and music teacher. She says she loves getting involved with the songwriting aspect of music with her students.
Darrell met Sarah randomly on a gig when her husband asked if she

could sit in with the band. Darrell says typically, you don’t let people you don’t know sing or sit in with your band, but something about the way Sarah’s husband asked compelled them to let her.“She was a killer singer. She was awesome.”
A few years later Sarah reached out to Darrell requesting his help with her album. “At the time, we didn’t really know each other. We just saw each other on the scene.” Darrell helped her produce and mix her album, and eventually they started performing music publicly together.
As much as Darrell and Sarah are quite the dynamic duo, they are not the only two who make this incredible podcast happen. Darrell and Sarah credit much of the production to the skills of their photography and video team. “They are wonderful,” says Darrell, “and incredibly generous with their time.” The talent of Brent Billman, Michael Von Pick, and Jessica R. Bunger from Evoke Studio is vital to each episode. Darrell explains what makes them such a perfect fit for the podcast, and gives them their edge, seems to be the coincidence that they also happen to be musicians themselves. “They just get it. They know what to do with the cameras for this type of show. They’re great.”
As editor, Darrell says he looks at their footage, and always has multiple amazing things to choose from. As an added bonus Evoke Studio’s own workspace happens to be right down the hallway from Definition Media. Darrell says it wasn’t like that in the beginning, but when they realized space was available they jumped. Nothing could have been more convenient.
Although the entire staff working Music Studio Live’s broadcast makes it look effortless, Darrell explains there is a huge amount of preparation that goes behind each episode. Generally, Darrell and Sarah will play two songs with whoever their music guest is. “Learning two original songs can be a lot of work at times.” Sarah says it is important to make sure they do the music justice, while still making it through recording and production quickly. “We don’t want things to have to be done ten times, in order to be perfect.” In addition, Darrell often finds the studio needs to be prepared days in advance, and for hours on end.
Each episode requires getting everything wired, planning out angles of where to take video from, building new audio inputs, and adjusting everybody’s headphone mix. Aside from audio and video, there is also preparing what to ask the group. Often, Darrell says he waits until the day of the show to get his head
into it. “I write out all my questions. I do about an hour of research on the guest. I’ve already been listening to their stuff, and met them, but I really try to come up with my questions day of.”
Music Studio Live’s guests so far typically have been people Darrell has crossed paths with at one time or another throughout his career and life. “We’ve just asked friends that happen to have done something higher than just the local thing. I mean, we do support local musicians and song writers, but we’re trying to keep it to somebody that has actually done something beyond just playing around here. Letters From Jett were recommended to us by Kelly Neff, a friend of ours. This was the first band I did not have a connection with prior to today. Which was great. [Otherwise] we look for somebody like Brian Sutherland, who is going to be on the Ellen show in March. He was on episode four. Or someone like Emir Bukovica from Bosnia, who appeared on episode 3. He’s an international super star in Europe. He happens to come here to vacation, because here nobody knows who he is, but he’s been my friend for over 20 years.” Darrell says they have begun to put their feelers out and have contacted some bigger artists, and have received very positive feedback from their managers, but so far scheduling may keep them waiting until later this year or next.
Still in the show’s infancy, Music Studio Live has only five of its current broadcasts available online, soon to be six. Subjects so far have covered the gamut. Aside from the previously mentioned artists, the group has hosted Casey Weston (from The Voice); Tim McGeary, who has recently written and produced major hit songs out of Nashville; and David C. Johnson, who has played bass guitar with Aaron Neville for over 20 years. Episode 6 features Tom Phelps, a 15 year old singer from London. With today’s addition of Letters From Jett, they find themselves quickly closing in on episode 7, recorded and ready for editing. The team says they still have their feelers out for their newest subject for episode 8.
The Music Studio Live staff gets together to record approximately every six weeks, but the latest challenge to that schedule may be that Sarah Hadeka is currently waiting for the arrival of another baby. She will be delivering her new addition within weeks. So, the group anticipates a slight delay, and says more than likely
they will have to wait just a few extra weeks before they can get together to record again. Darrell sites how important it is to remain consistent in their recording schedule, not only to keep the momentum and interest going for the show, but also because if they don’t, iTunes and other online sites have a tendency of dropping podcasts who don’t remain current. “If you don’t have one up for four or five months… you’ll get an email.”
Aside from keeping up with the schedule, Darrell says luckily there haven’t been many other challenges in the production of the show. “Honestly, everybody’s been available, extremely enthusiastic about coming, supportive and prepared. So, I think now it’s just getting the word out.”
The audio versions of the show are available on Spotify, iTunes, and Podbean, along with other sites, but the video version is only available on their YouTube channel. “We really want to stress subscribing to the channel. We promise we won’t send you anything except the episode when it comes out,” he explains, adding, “You need a 1,000 subscribers before you can make any money, so we have a long way to go. We have a ton of people that like it and watch it, but they don’t subscribe. That’s been the hardest challenge so far.”
The hope is to someday have corporate sponsorship, but at this time Darrell and the rest of the staff are focusing on building their following before they believe that can happen. So they are starting small, creating, promoting and trying to get media coverage in order to generate interest in what they do. In the meantime, audience members can help the show by supporting them through their Patreon account. “You can support us with any

amount you want, but we’re asking for a minimum of three bucks a month commitment,” he says. “With that contribution you’ll get blooper reels, bonus features, bonus photos
and any silly thing we come up with.”
Darrell explains how the entire staff at Music Studio Live is currently volunteering their skills and time to the podcast. He says as much as it would be great to eventually take the show to the next level, in the meantime, he really just wants to take care of everyone who contributes to the show. He notes, “I love doing this and I’m very proud of it, but nobody is making any money right now. Nobody is getting paid to do this. I don’t care about the gear or what I’ve spent. I just want to take care of my people for putting the time in.”
For now Music Studio Live is a passion project Darrell and the staff have thrown themselves into hard. “I’m showing people all the time, I’m giving out cards all the time. It’s not about look what I’ve done, it’s more I think you would like this, he says, adding, ”If I had something like this to watch when I was a teenager, it would have blown me away. I would have soaked it up, for sure.”
Music Studio Live targets pretty much anyone who appreciates music, but is also an educational platform for singer/songwriters or anyone who performs. Sarah explains, “As a musician, I think this podcast is so fascinating because you’re listening to how songs are written. It’s fascinating, as a musician, to listen to somebody talk about their process and their craft and then to watch it be performed live. That’s when you’re like, ‘holy cow!’, these people are the real deal. It’s inspiring. I think even if I had nothing to do with music and I listened to this I would enjoy it, I would feel uplifted by the amount of work and talent that those guys have.” Darrell agrees, “We’ve gotten lucky. Every one of our guests have been super professional with really good songs.”
Sarah adds, “We’re all looking to be entertained in a way. It could be listening to a song we love, it could be listening to NPR, whatever. We’re all looking to listen to something we find interesting. And I think this is interesting. I listen to podcasts while I’m getting ready in the morning, in the car, and stuff like that. If that's your thing, listen, listen, listen. You’ll enjoy it.” •

IMPORTANT NEW BOOK, What to Eat When: A Strategic Plan to Improve Your Health & Life Through Food (NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC),by
Michael Crupain,
MD, MPH,
explains how the choices we make all day every day about not only what we eat but when we eat can dramatically effect your overall health and quality of life —for better or worse.
Using the latest research in nutritional science and medicine, they offer new insights into smart dietary strategies as well as practical tips on when to eat what. They outline their ‘When Way’ plan, a new scientific approach to eating that promises to improve your energy levels and attitude in just one month. And all in an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, and entertaining way.
I asked the authors, Dr. Crupain and Dr. Roizen a few questions about their important findings, their dieting strategies and their acclaimed new book. •
Dr. Michael Crupain
What does the research show about how when we eat affects our metabolism and overallhealth?
Research suggests that when we eat is as important as what we eat. Our metabolismactually changes throughout the day based on our body’s clock. Eating in sync with our bodyclock can help us loose weight, sleep better, have more energy, and improve overall health.
You speak about the importance of understanding our circadian rhythm. How can we bestlearn about our personal rhythm?
Our circadian rhythm is our body’s clock. Its job is to get our body ready to do the rightthing at the right time. It regulates our sleep, our metabolism, and many other things in ourbody so that our biology is efficient. Our circadian rhythm is set by the sun and runs in a 24-hour cycle. It sets our body to expect to eat during the day and fast at night. While there issome variation in our individual rhythms, these general principles are the same and apply to usall.
Can you explain, in general, what your ‘When Way’ plan is?
Our plan is based on eat-
ing in sync with your body’s clock. Our principles are: eat with thesun, get the majority of your calories before 3pm (but don’t worry about counting them),don’t stereotype food (its OK to eat dinner foods for breakfast), and try to be consistent.
You say that we should look at foods as medicine? Can you explain?
Contrary to popular belief, genetics only plays a small part in our health, the way we live ourlives is the most important factor. Food is like medicine because it has the biggest influenceon our health (after smoking). Eating the wrong things at the wrong time can lead to chronicdiseases like heart disease and diabetes, while eating the right foods and at the right timescan both prevent and reverse disease.
You advise us to think more about what we are eating. Why is it important to think about where, when, what, and how we eat?
Being mindful of what, when, where, and how we eat is very important. Both the types offoods we eat and when we eat them can impact our weight, sleep, energy, and overall health.Paying attention to where and how we eat impacts our enjoyment of food, but also by takingtime to think about what we put in our mouths helps us to be less likely to overeat andrecognize when we are full.
Dr. Michael F. Roizen
Can you give examples of how someone’s eating schedule can affect them physically, mentally and even spiritually?
The main surprises of eating the ‘When Way’ (eat only when the sun is out, eat 75% ofcaloriesbefore 2pm, eat dinner for breakfast) is that within four days you no longerare hungry after 7pm, sleep better, and feel more energy — much more energy. Michael Crupain and I were both skeptics; but felt like we were 20 years younger. The better sleep allowsyou to be more alert, function mentally at a higher level, and are more generous of time toward others.
I am a person who sleeps late and works late and seems to function best at night. What is your advice about when ‘night owls’ should schedule their eating habits?
The main surprises of eating the When Way (eat only when the sun is out, eat 75% of calories before 2pm, eat dinner for breakfast) is that within four days you nolonger are hungry after 7pm, sleep better, and feel much more energy.

Here’s what you’re facing: While you may take in the same number ofcaloriesas people who don’t work the night shift (research supports this), the very nature of youreatingpatterns violates the When Way in many ways. Such as:
You have irregular eating patterns. You tend to be less likely to eat meals and morelikelyto engage in multiple episodes of inconsistent snacking throughout the night. The rules are: eat whilethe sun shines, eat more early, less later, and eat consistently and automatically from day today).Eating irregularly alone has been shown to increase the risk of metabolic syndrome.
You tend to eat worse foods. People who work the night shift tend to eat less fiberand oftentimes more soft drinks and foods laden with sugar and fat. In fact, a study showed that whensubjectswere put in a condition that simulated night shift work, they were more likely to choose morefattyfoods for breakfast afterwards. Foods with saturated fats, like bacon or egg yolks, come with carnitine or lecithin or choline that change thebacteriainside your gut to promote inflammation inside you.)
A large study examining people on the night shift also found that their diets tend tocontainmore pro-inflammatory foods than people working regular hours. One reason is food availabilityandconvenience. There are less healthy options available easily during the night and people tendtoeat cold foods (like vending machine snacks and pastries) more often. And people who worknightshifts gain more weight over their lifetime, and have 30% more type2 diabetes.
Does research show how the changing seasons alter when you should eat? Does it change from short winter days to long summer days?
The epitome of a season change is at Daylight Savings Time (DST). The shift in time disrupts our circadian rhythm and leads to sleep deprivation whichcanhave bigger health ramifications on our bodies including higher stroke risk, increased work-related injuries, increased risk of heart attack in the days following DST.
So we recommend shifting your sleep time and your eating times 15 minutes forward (orbackward)each day for four days starting four days in advance of DST, and eating75% of your calories 8 hours before your planned bed time.
How should we sync our eating and exercise schedules — and why?
Although there isn’t a lot of data that links fasting before a workout to losing more weight,we recommend eating after a workout rather than before. If you can exercise in the morningafteran overnight fast, even better. And there’s another reason why eat-
ing after a workout isbetter: Youwill help repair the muscle tissue that was damaged during exercise. By having something small with a mix of protein and carbohydrates (like Greek yogurt), that energy will be quickly takenup bymuscles, where it can help aid recovery, rather than circulating as excess blood sugar.
You explain when and why certain foods are helpful to deal with specific situations and conditions. What foods are best when you are feeling depressed?
In the Moment: Feeling down right now? Take a lesson from the almightycarbohydrate. Its very job is to provide you with energy, but research suggests it can also help boost yourmoodand handle stress. But don’t take it in its simple form. Instead, try a piece of 100 percentwhole graintoast with all-natural peanut butter (no sugar added). Add a few berries of choice. Best of all, peanutsare rich in an amino acid called tryptophan, which is a building block of serotonin.
For the Long Haul: To improve your mood and reduce chances of depression, a diet of fish, vegetables, and healthy oils is the way to go. In a recent study of people who were monitoredforsix years, those who ate more vegetables, fruits, and grains were less likely to havedepressivesymptoms than those who ate more of a Western meat-and-potatoes (with butter on them) type ofdiet.
Best Anti-Blues Food: Fish like salmon and ocean trout are full of omega-3 fatty acids that helps improve thefunctionof neurotransmitters.
An All-Day Crutch: Keep green tea by your side. It has many health benefits, but one of themis that it includes an amino acid shown to have a calming effect.
What foods are best when you need to be alert and focus?
Of course, the best approach to increasing your short-term cognitive function isto eat adiet rich with brain foods all the time so that you’re primed and ready to go at a moment’s notice.
MVPs: Coffee or green tea. There’s a reason why caffeine has become the ubiquitous morningcrutch. It triggers a number of chemical responses that make you alert, give you energy, andmake you sharper. One of the ways it achieves this is by influencing your brain chemistry sothatmore neurons are firing. Aim for one or two cups about30minutes before you need to perform a mental task.Coffee and green tea have won-
derful health benefits too, including being linked to reducedheartissues and lower inflammation. But overdoing consumption can diminish its in-the-momenteffectiveness. If you’re a habitual user, you may not get the big boost you’re looking forwhen the time comes. And if you experience side effects like jitters, you should avoid caffeine in these situations.
Key Players: If you’re under the microscope for a few hours at a time, your best bet will be a mealthat contains 100% whole grains, slowdigesting carbs that will give you a steady dripof energy. A choice like a whole wheat English muffin with natural, no-sugar-added peanutbutter is perfect here, becauseit also contains some protein and fat to give you nutritionalbalance for hours.
Cut from the Team: Just about anything you find in a vending machine. It’s tempting to grabacolorfully wrapped bar of sugar to give you a surge. That influx of glucose can feel like a goodthingin the short term, but it won’t last. You’ll experience a drop in energy, likely after 40 minutes. That’s aformula for tanking any mental task.
What foods are best when you are suffering from arthritis?
When joints degenerate, you lose that cushioning, and the glide changes to agrind. Grinding your knees or hips or any joint means you’ll end up grinding your teeth in pain.
The Luscious Lube: Your cartilage contains a complex molecule called aggrecan. It makes up10%of the dry weight of cartilage (the rest is mostly water). Aggrecan molecules help hydratethe cartilage, which is a key component for helping it function well. When you switch betweenstanding and sitting, cartilage works like an accordion, squeezing water in and out. The moreaggrecan you have, the better your body is able to handle this switch. Oils made fromavocado andsoybeans can improve the function of aggrecan, and may even help slow down damageor help repair damaged joints. The downside is that it requires a specific extract of those oils, not the ones you can get easily from the foods. Although the jury is still out on itseffectiveness, you could try a daily 300mg avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) supplement. TheFrench government has tracked its safety for 15 years, with no significant problemsdocumented.
Without the cushioning, you have more chance that bone can rub against the soft tissue — or,as itprogresses, against its opposing

bones. That friction creates an inflammatory response, which oftencreates an expletive-filled response. It’s not fun, but sadly, it’s one of life’s inevitable outcomes brought on by the wear and tear of age. Some 85% of us will have osteoarthritis bythe timewe reach the age of 85. But many of us will feel the effects much earlier.
So how does food influence your intricate system of movement? First and foremost, eatingtheWhen Way will help you control inflammation as well as your weight; that will take some of theburdenoff your joints. But the When Way is also important when it comes to bones. With the rightnutrients, you can send in reinforcements to increase their density, which will make them stronger asyou getolder (and heal better if they’re broken).
To be clear, bones and joints are related — but like stepsiblings. They’re part of the samefamily, but aren’t really constructed the same way or serve the same functions. So to keepyour system moving well andstaying strong, you’ll need to think
about the nutrients you take in, as well as keeping control ofinflammation. By eating the When Way, you can have plenty of meals that will help you fortifyyouranatomical suit of armor.
MVP: You may have expected us to push milk mustaches here — and yes, dairy containscalciumand vitamins D and K, the building blocks of bones. But we prefer you get these essentialvitaminsfrom dark green vegetables — think broccoli, collard greens, kale,
spinach, and bok choy, which aregood sources of calcium and vitamin K. You can get D from our favorite fish — salmon! In addition, these veggies are also anti-inflammatory, so they will help with joint issues as well.
Key Players: There are plenty of stealthy ways to get calcium, including spinach, okra, artichokes, and figs (which also contain potassium and magnesium, both good for your bones). Healthy fats alsohelp improve bone density. Foods that contain polyphenols — coffee, avocados, walnuts, tomatoes — will help keep inflammation down. A recent study also suggests that certain typesofprobiotics (good bacteria) can help prevent bone density loss.
Foods to choose: Salmon and sardines. These fatty fish have bone-healthy vitamin D. Extra-virgin olive oil. It is packed with phytonutrients that have antioxidant power, and studies suggest it can protect bones. Guacamole — avocados have healthy fats and polyphenols, both of which are good for joint health. •

HENmost people think about coastal Florida, they picture sandy beaches and delicate seashells, sandpipers racing in the waves and dolphins splashing on the horizon. But in fact, more of Florida’s shores are lined with mangroves than white sand beaches. But since it is a bit more difficult to lay back and relax in a maze-like mangrove forest than on a sun-kissed beach, most people overlook both their importance and beauty. Here in southern Florida, there are three main species of mangroves (red, black, and white), and together these three plants make up an intricate and vital ecosystem.
Mangroves are halophytic (salt-tolerant) trees or shrubs found in coastal, tropical regions of the world. Some species excrete the excess salt from seawater from their leaves, while others have specially adapted roots that block its uptake in the first place. Most plants can’t survive in areas
that have such high salt content. That’s why you see the same tall reeds (phragmites) along northern highways as you do near the coast: we put salt on our roads to mitigate slippery ice from forming, but it also helps an invasive coastal plant outcompete native wetland species. Mangrove trees, on the other hand, are limited by temperature, so you only see them growing in tropical and sub-tropical climates. And while this does mean that they might stand to benefit from global temperatures rising, they face much more immediate threats in the form of deforestation. Besides mangroves, what other species that you know enjoys tropical beachfront real estate? Hint: if you can read this article, you are one of them.
Mangroves provide important ecological services to us: they provide habitat for dozens of species, they act as a carbon sink which helps slow climate change, and their

incredible root systems hold on tight to soil, slowing erosion. That last one is particularly useful along coastlines that get hit by hurricanes and are at risk of sinking into the ocean.
Many animal species depend on the presence of healthy mangrove habitat, and every-thing from birds to snakes to fishes use the dense tangle of roots as a fortress to hide from predators. Oysters and sponges grow right on the sprawling roots up to the high tide line, and juvenile fishes use the labyrinth as a shelter before heading out to sea. The next time you go fishing or scuba diving, thank the mangroves for providing a nursery for many of the species you see: snapper, grouper, tarpon, snook, sea bass, and jacks all grow up in mangrove forests.
Numerous species of crustaceans, from shrimp to the arboreal Mangrove Crabs thrive in mangrove forests, and provide the base of an intricate food-web here. Mangrove
Saltmarsh Snakes slither and bask among the protective mangrove roots, then go hunting in nearby mudflats and salt marshes. Similar stories go for many of the species that can be found in and around mangrove forests. Herons and egrets patrol the muddy bases of the trees in search of small fish and crabs. Raccoons sleep in the trees and climb down to root through the mud for invertebrates. If they’re around, Wood Storks are tough to miss: over three feet tall and clad in bold white and black, these wading birds are year-round residents of Florida’s coast. The lush green treetops also provide habitat and food for dozens of species of songbirds, including many migratory species.
One of the more specialized species that can be found in mangrove swamps is the Mangrove Buckeye butterfly, a gorgeous insect that lives nowhere else. The striking eyespots on this butterfly’s wings confuse predators - a bird

aiming to bite the insect’s head might accidentally get a piece of wing, allowing the butterfly time to escape. Look for this delicate beauty along sunny boardwalks in mangrove habitat throughout southern Florida.
The complex system of roots and twisted trunks holds more than just animals — it contains carbon. An interesting aspect of mangrove forests is the relatively high amount of carbon they contain both in the roots above ground and in the soil below, making them important players in the battle against climate change. As all plants do, mangroves breath in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, holding on to the carbon for themselves. They essentially scrub the carbon dioxide from the air, storing it within their sprawling roots and branches. Acre for acre, mangrove forests sequester more carbon out of the atmosphere than most tropical rainforests!
Perhaps the benefit that is toughest to quantify is the mangrove’s
ability to prevent soil erosion and protect our shorelines. The cage-like aerial roots trap sediment and provide a buffer against waves and storms. As we have seen all over the world recently, large storms have the ability to significantly alter landscapes and coastlines. Strong waves and storm surge can essentially drag entire beaches underwater. And for a state that sits an average of six feet above sea level (and houses over 20 million people), this ecological service is increasingly critical. Additionally, because these forests are so strong and structurally complex, they are the nesting place of choice for many of Florida’s birds.
Mangrove habitats are a vital part of our natural ecosystems. They provide shelter for diverse wildlife and hold together our shorelines, and even though they may not smell like a field of roses, they are worth learning about and protecting. •
