SWFL Reading Festival Brings AuthorsToFort

Myers Library

More than 20 acclaimed and best-selling authors for adults, teens and children will be appearing at the 21st annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival on Saturday, March 7, from 10am-4pm, on the downtown Fort Myers Regional Library campus. Authors will be reading, signing books and meeting fans. Attendees can participate in storytelling programs and a variety of writing and coloring contests and activities.

The Lee County Library System is also offering fans a chance to meet and mingle with the SWFL Reading Festival authors during An Evening with the Authors fundraiser, Friday, March 7, 5:308:30pm, at the Marina at Edison Ford, located at 2360 West First St. in downtown Fort Myers. Paid reservations are required for the buffet dinner overlooking the Caloosahatchee River. Proceeds from An Evening with the Authors benefit the Southwest Florida Reading Festival,

The lineup of award-winning authors scheduled to attend the festival include adult authors: Erik Larson, Susan Beckham Zurenda, Jack Carr, Jennifer Chiaverini, Jenn McKinlay, Mary HoneyB Morrison, Lincoln Child, Sonali Dev, Michael Koryta, William Kent Krueger, Chris Pavone, Lisa Unger, and Mark Greaney, author of nine novels in the ‘Gray Man’ series, and has written or co-written seven Tom Clancy ‘Jack Ryan’ novels.

Children’s authors appearing at the Reading festival include:

Monica Brown, Karina Yan Glaser, Kate Messner, and Kamilla Benko, author of Frozen 2: Forest of Shadows, as well as Zachariah Ohora, illustrator of the bestseller Wolfie the Bunny, and graphic novelist Sara Varon.

Teen authors attending the festival include: K.A. Holt, Sara Holland, and Alexandra Monir.

The Blues In Bonita Springs

The 14th annual Bonita Blues Festival returns to Bonita Springs’ Riverside Park Friday & Saturday, March 13 & 14, featuring award-winning local and acclaimed national musicians. Gates open at 1pm on Friday with music starting at 1:30pm with the David Julia Band, followed by the Pam Taylor & The Flying Vs performing at 3pm and Tennessee Redemption featuring Brandon Santini & Jeff Jensen playing at 4:30pm and The Honey Island Swamp Band at 6pm. The evening’s headliner, Damon Fowler & Friends perform 7:45-9pm with special guest Jonathon Long.

Gates open at 11am on Saturday, March 14 with music starting at 11:30 with McKinley James, followed by Robbin Kapsalis and Vintage #18 playing at 1pm and Tas Cru & His Band of Tortured Souls at 2:30pm. JP Soars' Gypsy Blue Revue, featuring Jason Ricci & Anne Harris play at 4:15pm, James Harman performs at 6pm and headliner Little Freddie King plays from 7:45-9pm.

Proceeds of the Bonita Blues Festival benefit the Bonita Springs Assistance Office’s Music for Minors Foundation, providing

Fort Myers’ On The Fringe

The Alliance for the Arts, in partnership with the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre and Florida Rep Education, are presenting Fringe Fort Myers, a four-day festival featuring 48 performances on four different stages, April 22-26.

Fringe Fort Myers is the newest Fringe theatre festival in the United States and maintains longstanding Fringe traditions of being 100% uncensored, 100% unjuried and 100% inclusive. And 100% of ticket sales go directly to the artists.

Out of 32 entries, 16 artists were selected at random, with 6 local performers, 6 state performers and 4 national and international performers.

Fringe Fort Myers kicks off on April 22 with the fun and frenetic Teaser Show, a great opportunity for audiences to learn what the shows in the festival are about, with each performance group having 3 minutes to describe their show.

Susan Beckham Zurenda, author of the new acclaimed novel, Bells for Eli, will be appearing at the SWFL Reading Festival on March 7.

Over the next 4 days there will be 48 performances on 4 different stages at the Alliance for the Arts and Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. After the final curtain, Fringe Fort Myers will host an awards ceremony celebrating the artists. Florida Rep Education will also offer Kids Fringe, which will operate a family-friendly festival within Fringe Fort Myers.

Sanibel’s Shell Festival

This 83rd annual Shell Festival, held March 5-7 at the Sanibel Community House will draw shell enthusiasts from around the United States, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, India, and Japan to compete in the longest running and most prestigious competitive Shell Show in the country. In 2019, ribbon winners came from 60 different cities in 23 different states and four countries.

The Shell Festival features floral arrangements, sailor’s valentines and other works of art, and the opportunity to meet the artists who use shells and other sea life as their medium, as well as presentations and book signings by local authors. The show also features an extensive collections of shells from around the world, free shell crafting demonstrations, crafts, exhibits, hands-on activities, and the chance to observe live seashells (mollusks) in multiple aquariums. The Sanibel Shell Crafters will be selling shell jewelry, mirrors, flower arrangements and ‘shell critters.’ Entrance to the Shell Festival grounds is free, but a small donation is requested to attend the Shell Show inside the Community House. Donations include a 50% off coupon to the nearby Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum during the Shell Festival. The Shell Museum is the only museum in the country dedicated solely to shells and mollusks, the animals that create shells.

Funds from the Shell Festival benefit the Sanibel Community Association and the SanibelCaptiva Shell Club.

HotWorks.org presents the 3rd Naples Fine Art Show, March 28 & 29, at the Naples ItalianAmerican Club. All works in the juried fine art and fine craft show are original and personally handmade by the artist present at the show, which features paintings,

drawings, clay, glass, sculpture, fiber, wood, and jewelry. Admission and parking are free.

As part of HotWorks’ commitment to bring art education into the community, the Youth Art Competition for ages 9-19, is integrated within the art show. Attendees can experience the pioneer spirit and rich agricultural history of Florida’s heartland during the Immokalee Cattle Drive & Jamboree on March 14 at the Immokalee Pioneer Museum at Roberts Ranch. The event, from 7am-4pm, is free.

The cattle drive starts along Main Street in Immokalee as cattle boss Clint Raulerson leads 200 head of cattle, 30 horseback cowboys, and cattle dogs to Roberts Ranch, a former farmstead listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operated as a Collier County museum. Activities and entertainment include storytelling, alligator wrestling, dancing horses, re-enactors, roping and whip cracking demonstrations, traditional food demonstrations, live music, craft and food vendors, and a Kids’ Korral, with a traditional taffy pull, games, and crafts.

Each year one local pioneer family is honored. This year the family of Huey Howard and their contributions to the Immokalee community will be honored.

The annual Immokalee Cattle Drive & Jamboree to the Immokalee Pioneer Museum at Roberts Ranch is March 14.

Global Food & Farm Festival, will be held March 13 & 14 at ECHO Global Farm & Research Center in North Fort Myers.

Partnering with local organizations and businesses, ECHO’s Global Food & Farm Festival has provided thousands of attendees with the opportunity to taste exotic foods, explore the Global Farm, learn about food and culture in a new way, and about ECHO’s mission to end world hunger.

The ECHO’s 28th Food & Farm Fest will be a two-day event this year, Friday & Saturday, from 9am-3pm, with educational exhibits & workshops, interactive displays, international food samples, liveon-stage cooking shows and a plant sale (Saturday only).

Special events scheduled for Friday, March 13 are:

Edible Backyard Design Workshop (10am & 3pm): Explore examples of edible plants and fruit trees while you learn principles of edible landscaping.

Garden & Glass Tour (11am & 1pm): Learn how to include fresh, tropical flavors in your homemade foods and beverages.

Tours Offered Of Artists’ Studios

Artis—Naples is hosting their 24th annual Artists’ Studio Tours March 1 & 2. The half-day events bring visitors inside the studios of some of the finest artists working in Southwest Florida today, meeting the artists and seeing the artistic process in action.

The tours visit six artists: Brett F. Harvey & Lauren Amalia Redding (he is a sculptor who has worked as lead installer for Jeff Koons while maintaining his own studio, she is an artist and writer who utilizes silverpoint to create portraits); painter Carmelo Blandino, interpretive realist painter Fred Nold, Janine Wesselman (first American woman accepted into the

Collection d’Art Modern de la Ville de Paris), and photographer Lorri Freedman.

• The Alliance of the Arts is hosting their annual Artist Studio & House Tour on March 28. Self-guided tour begins at 10am at the Alliance for the Arts where ticket holders receive a map to the artists’ studios, spaces and homes. Although Rick Plummer has been sketching and drawing since he was 6, it wasn't until after he retired from his dentistry practice in Fort Myers for 40 years that he turned more fully to making art. Six months into retirement, he did the illustrations for a book celebrating the 100th anniversary of the legendary Musso & Frank Grill in Los Angeles.

Tim Smith devotes his studio practice as a production potter, sculptor and painter while teaching for area art institutions throughout southwest Florida. In 2019, Tim opened his Sanibel Pottery Studio School while

continuing to teach at Cypress Lake High School’s Center for the Arts.

Babefest Celebrates 5th Year

Celebrate five years of Love Your Rebellion’s Babefest on Saturday, April 18th at 8pm at Palace Pub & Wine in Cape Coral.

The annual diversity-first concert features Louisville’s beloved Kentucky fried queerdos, GRLwood and alt punk duo Lung, from Cincinnati. The full lineup will be announced in early March, and will include a range of punk acts with diverse members from all over Florida.

The festival’s mainstage concerts will be presented in the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, and several other concerts, by eight bands, will be staged at venues within walking distance: Art Center Sarasota, Bayfront Community Center, Holley Hall, and Cohen Hall.

Mainstage concerts feature The Manhattan Transfer, Ken Peplowski, Dick Hyman, Houston Person, Charles McPherson, Russell Malone, and Terell Stafford.

The Jazz Festival starts on March 8 with Jazz in the Park, a free outdoor concert, 12-4pm in Phillippi Estate Park. WANTED singers

Coastal Voices Chorus, a prospective chapter of Harmony Inc., an international women’s a cappella singing organization, is looking for women singers. They are inviting women who enjoy singing and performing to visit a Thursday evening rehearsal in Fort Myers. No formal music training is required, nor is the ability to read music needed. The Alliance for the Arts is asking local artists to submit work to the ‘Art Lives Here’ billboard campaign. The project transforms billboard advertisement space into public art by the local community. Selected artwork will be displayed on billboards throughout Lee County. The Fort Myers Mural Society is seeking artists for a mural project that will draw attention to the historic origins of McCollum Hall. During the 1930s and '40s, the two-story Art Deco building in the Dunbar business district became Southwest Florida’s most famous entertainment venue, hosting the likes of Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, B.B. King, Otis Redding, and Duke Ellington. The mural project will pay homage to the property’s backstory. The anticipated mural will cover 17 panels on the concrete wall that separates McCollum Hall from the residential neighborhood just to the north. Artists and artist teams interested in participating in the project have until March 31 to submit a design plan and sketch along with their credentials to the Fort Myers Mural Society. The City’s Public Art Committee will approve the

The Marco Island Beautification Advisory Committee and Marco Island Center for the Arts are partnering in a newly approved program to cover 10 traffic control utility boxes with custom artwork. Florida Man

TIM DORSEY’S LATEST ADDITIONto the Serge Storms saga, Naked Came the Florida Man (HARPER COLLINS), takes on the challenge of uncovering a Florida that few readers — or writers — know well. PHILIP JASON: What are the main characteristics of that special slice of humanity you have dubbed Florida Man?

TIM DORSEY:I didn't dub it, the world has,

although writers such as Carl Hiaasen and I have been writing about the phenomenon for years without knowing that it would go viral. I guess what cuts to the essence of the issue is the famous quote, "The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits."

What caught your interest in running a story line about a young girl wishing to participate in men’s sports?

Following one of the smallest schools in Tampa win the girls flag football state championship against one of the gigantic dynasties.

Do you have a favorite region of Florida? Which one and why?

If I had to pick, I would name the southernmost climates, Miami and down including the keys, because all the tropical vegetation can survive down there and it's beautiful.

What accounts for the symbiotic relationship between Serge and Coleman?

Opposites attract, plus they obviously need each other.

Coleman needs Serge for basic survival, and Serge needs someone who is numbedout to deal with his hyper-energetic rants about Florida. Rare coins make appearances in this novel. What attracted you to developing this plot line? I collected Lincoln pennies as a small child. I was obsessed. Which historic sites mentioned in the novel, ridiculous or otherwise, are your true favorites?

All the graves and cemeteries.

You were a reporter before you became a novelist. What prompted this career move?

I actually got into reporting as a way to improve my writing ability so that I could make the move to novels.

Which of your contemporaries in humorous fiction writing would you like to recommend to your readers?

Which part of the writing process do you most enjoy?

When I have completely finished the outline (which I spend a lot of time at, even if the tangential nature of the books doesn't show it), and can actually start writing the first draft.

Which part do you find most odious?

Nothing, except the extreme fatigue toward the end, because there's no substitute for continuity of work on the first couple of drafts.

How do you come up with a new premise for a new adventure?

I collect news stories over the course of the previous year, and then check all my notes and pick out what interests me the most and then start building around that. But the real thrust of the books is the state of Florida and what geographical area I want to explore most.

With whom do you share your work while it’s still in progress?

Zero. Nobody. I don't want my book read until the final draft is done so that anyone gets the final impact.

Is Lake Okeechobee a blessing or a curse?

A blessing all the way; man is the curse.

How does Serge keep his old Plymouth running?

He doesn't. He's constantly persuading someone else to give him a new muscle car each year.

What’s next from the Dorsey avalanche of side-splitting fiction?

Personal liability attorneys and state parks. It's a natural fit.

Tim Dorsey was born in Indiana, moved to Florida at the age of 1, and grew up in a small town about an hour north of Miami called Riviera Beach. He graduated from Auburn University in 1983, where he was editor of the student newspaper.

From 1983-1987, he was a police and courts reporter for The Alabama Journal, the now-defunct evening newspaper in Montgomery. He joined The Tampa Tribune in 1987 as a reporter and was an editor from1994-1999. He left the paper in 1999 to write full time.

Dorsey has since published 23 novels

Long Time Coming

MOST FIRST TIME AUTHORSare happy just to get published. Not many find themselves Okra Picks, featured author at Publishers Weekly, or receiving advance accolades from The New York Times best selling authors. Susan Beckham Zurenda, author of Bells For Eli (MERCER UNIVERSITY PRESS) is the exception. When all of the above honors were bestowed upon her first book, she couldn’t begin to express her emotions other than feeling extremely lucky. What she attributes to luck, others attribute to talent.

It didn’t all happen overnight. It took 33 years to get past teaching English at Spartanburg Community College and advanced placement English classes at a local high school, raising two daughters and fully embracing retirement before finally turning her attention to writing the book that had been germinating in the back of her mind for quite a while.

Retirement supplied the long blocks of time she couldn’t find when she was working and raising a family. “Once I started the book I was in front of the computer for hours, four to five nights a week. Within a year the first draft was completed.”

The setting for the story is a small Southern town in the mid 1900s. The beginning pretty much follows reality. It’s based on an accident her cousin Danny had as a toddler. When he was two-years-old his father was using Red Devil Dye, commonly known as lye, a deadly drain cleaner. His father left it unattended for a few minutes while he took a break. Danny found it and drank some and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. His life was saved by a tracheotomy that stayed in place until the age of 12. However, after being bullied and harassed for looking and being different from his peers he had already developed social and mental issues. The accident changed the trajectory of his life. “Throughout the years I heard stories about Danny and how he survived,” Zurenda explains. “The scenario fascinated me and I knew that someday I would write a book about how a freak accident can dictate the rest of your life.”

The rest of the story comes from the authors imagination. First cousins Ellison Wi nfield (Eli) and Adeline Green (Delia) live across the street from each other.

Because of his disability Eli has problems. Delia eventually becomes his best friend and protector. As they mature they find themselves physically attracted to each other. Knowing this is socially unacceptable, they try to rectify the situation by putting some space between them. They decide to attend different colleges but soon discover that it will take more than miles to quash their mutual feelings. In addition to the obvious issues, the cousins have to deal with other feelings and pressures along the way.

While Zurenda was writing Bells of Eli, she worked as a publicist for Magic Time Literary Publicity where she met Marly Rusoff, a well-known and respected literary agent. Rusoff represented several best-selling authors including some who were clients of Magic Time.

Zurenda decided to talk to Rusoff about representation. “Although her website says she wasn’t accepting new clients, I decided to approach her anyway. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it or if it would work, I just knew it was worth a try. One afternoon I got the nerve to call her. No email, no cover letter, no query, I just picked up the phone and called. I figured all she could say was she wasn’t interested or was too busy. She surprised me and not only took my call, but we had a nice chat ending with her agreeing to read the book. Before hanging up she said, ‘I hope I love it.’”

“Well,” Zurenda said. “She called Monday morning and said ‘I do love it.’ I was so excited I couldn’t respond for a few seconds. She said she’d have an editor look over the manuscript and we’d go from there. To say I was happy is an understatement.”

When Bells For Eli was completed Rusoff began pitching it. Several publishers commented that there were too many chapters about Eli and Delia’s childhood. Besides cutting some of the back story, they suggested a need for a bond between the two that only they were aware of.

“That last suggestion kind of threw me,” Zurenda says. “But, as was my habit, when I had some thinking to do I got on my bike and rode until my mind was clear. I concentrated on ways to add a workable subplot to the story. About 15 miles later I had an idea. When I got home my husband started talking to me. I held up my hand indicating

that he should stop talking. I had to put my thoughts on paper fast. I didn’t want the details to leave me.”

Zurenda successfully introduced new characters and created a mystery that connected to the main plot. “I was never really happy with the ending,” she said. “But after all the subtractions and additions, the ending almost wrote itself and it was much better.”

The author credits Rusoff for helping her develop and make her story even better than the original. “She’s old school and really dug in to help. I don’t know how the new, younger agents work but I would be surprised if they get as involved as she does. Marly believed in the book and worked hard to get it published.”

Bells For Eli was submitted, along with hundreds of other books, for the coveted Okra award sponsored by the Southern Independent Book Sellers Alliance (SIBA). Mercer University Press, sent Zurenda to the SIBA conference where she mingled with other authors up for the award. About four months later she received a call informing her she was one of coveted Winter 2020 Okra Picks. She attributed the win to luck. Again, others say it is talent.

The award comes with perks. Most winners go on to be book club picks when

released in paper back and are known to show up on lists such as the Southern best sellers and best of the year. They are also popular gift items.

It was a major win for the 64 year-old writer, but she is no stranger to professional recognition. She’s written and published many short stories in literary magazines. Several won awards, including the South Carolina Fiction Prize (twice), the Porter Fleming Competition, the Southern Writers Symposium, Emerging Writers Fiction Contest, the Hub City Hardegree Contest in Fiction, Alabama Conclave First Novel Chapter Contest and the Jubilee Writing Competition (twice).

Though fiction is her genre of choice, Zurenda has authored essays of people and events germane to South Carolina. A lot of famous people passed through Spartanburg. She wrote about August Cook, an art professor at Congress College whose art has been displayed in museums all over the world. She was also privy to information about an event that took place during Sherman’s March. “His men set fire to the third floor of my great, great grandparents house. When they were trying to get away one of the men fell down the steps. The family was sitting in the living room and witnessed the man falling. The soldier confessed

that he started a fire upstairs and that they all had to evacuate fast.”

Her experience as a publicist has helped develop the promotional strategy for her book. “I watched and learned over the years. I noticed that advertising and marketing are very intense for the first three months so I am following that example.”

Zurenda will be signing books March 4 at MacIntosh Books on Sanibel and hosting a writing workshop March 6, at 2pm at the South County Regional Library in Estero, as well as appearing at the the Southwest Florida Reading Festival in downtown Fort Myers’ Historic River District on March 7.

This is an ambitious schedule for a healthy person. Add a foot cast to the mix and you have a situation. Zurenda will begin her tour in a cast. “I was out walking when a hit and run driver sent me flying through the air. I saw the car cross over his lane out of the corner of my eye, and tried to pivot to avoid being hit. It didn’t work. My ankle was broken in several places. It’s now full of steel and screws and I am in a cast. Recovery is slow but eventually I will be fine. I’m lucky to be alive.” The driver of the car was never located. FARMING for The FUTURE

This one lady told me that she passed ECHO’s sign everyday for almost ten years and never knew that all this was back here,” Russ Luther, tour guide at ECHO Global Farm, says as he sits forward in his chair, his blue eyes sparkling behind his silver-framed glasses. Russ has long gray hair and a habit of straightening the business cards on his desk during pauses in conversation. We are sitting in his office at ECHO and midwinter light streams through the window in the next office over. Outside, ECHO volunteers and employees are harvesting from the gardens and preparing for the Global Food and Farm Festival in March.

The sign Russ describes in his story is weather-worn but sturdy, with bold green letters spelling out ECHO and an arrow on the bottom pointing towards the gift shop and gardens. ECHO has been in existence since the 1980’s and has been growing ever since. Originally established by Christian clergy to alleviate hunger in Haiti, ECHO (Educational Concern for Hunger Organization) is now a global faith-based organization focused on alleviating world hunger through innovative growing strategies, seed banks, and direct cooperation with rural farmers.

“There’s always something new going on here, always something to learn,” Russ says. Once a member of the clergy himself, Russ speaks about ECHO with a quiet reverence. As I walked around ECHO’s gardens with Danielle Flood, the PR and Communications Manager at ECHO, it is hard to ignore

the kind of holiness contained in the just harvested soil, the hymns of buzzing fruit flies, and the congregation of small birds picking at pieces of fallen sapodilla fruit.

ECHO is an entire world contained off the side of Durrance Road. Tours at ECHO run from Tuesdays to Saturdays, and guests are led around ECHO’s gardens, where the brunt of ECHO’s work occurs and also where the Global Food & Farm Festival will take place on March 13 &14.

ECHO’s gardens mimic the wide variety of settings where farming occurs, and the gardens are divided according to different farming conditions. The first section we pass through are the lowlands and the highlands. ECHO, using agricultural research as well as trial and error, experiments with growing techniques in these particular conditions, testing to see what small-scale farmers can do to produce the greatest crop yield with the lowest amount of cost and waste. The highlands portion of the gardens contains several levels of crops nestled in rocky soil. The plants are organized in neat rows, and it is clear to see by looking at them how well-tended the crops are in their arid conditions.

We stop by a model homestead, which is organized the way a family might organize their farm. There is a house made from wood with a low sloped roof and a chicken coop located nearby, closer to the house where the chickens are safer from predators. Around the house are garden areas. I step into a keyhole garden, a half-moon shaped garden composed of bricks. The keyhole garden is waist high with an entrance that cuts into the middle. There are crops at the top that can be easily watered and weeded without the farmer needing to bend over.

“We made the bricks here,” Danielle says, touching the outside of the keyhole garden. The bricks are made of a mixture of earth materials hardened in the sun, a method that requires no heavy equipment so that a farmer in a rural village could make the gardens easily.

I brush my fingers along the leaves of the crops. A cool breeze filters through the gardens, and I feel like I have opened the door to a new kind of Florida.

“I have more to show you,” Danielle says, and laughs. I turn and step out of the keyhole garden, unlocking myself, and return to the gravel path.

During our tour, Danielle tells me about her time serving in Niger, West Africa, while on a mission trip, and the farmers she met there. She points out the names of different crops and describes the harvest cycle. This time of year is harvest time, and she shows me cartons of tomatoes and sapodilla.

“Here is one of my favorite volunteers,” Danielle says, and introduces me to Jeanette Flood, her mother-in-law. “Are two Floods too much?” Danielle asks, and I shake my head no.

Jeanette sits on a bench at the edge of the gardens and stops writing in her notebook. Once a kindergarten teacher, Jeanette now plans the arts and crafts portion of the Global Food & Farm Festival for the children at the event.

“We make spoon butterflies, spoon dragonflies,” Jeanette says. She shows me a sketch of a spoon butterfly. “All ages are welcome,” Jeanette says, when I joke about wanting to make a spoon butterfly myself.

Jeanette, along with every employee, volunteer, and intern at ECHO, plan for the Global Food & Farm Festival months in advance. The Global Food & Farm Festival has been updated for this year under Danielle’s guidance. Now running for two days, the Festival is a celebration of sustainability, agriculture, and the earth.

Along with arts and crafts for children, the Festival will offer a Tropical Tasting Lunch and a long harvest table dinner and auction, with the food for

both events coming from the ECHO gardens. Danielle describes how excited she is for the Garden & Glass tour, an instructive culinary experience on how to incorporate fresh ingredients into cooking.

We step into an office space linked to the woodshop, where plant beds and garden boxes are built, and I meet Tim Watkins, head of agricultural operations at ECHO. His office is half-painted an algal kind of green and a faded yellow. “I definitely like the green better,” Tim says.

As the head of agricultural operations, Tim is responsible for ensuring the garden productions run smoothly. “The spring is always a busy time,” Tim says, looking out his office window at the beds of crops.

During the Global Food & Farm Festival, Tim is leading an Edible Backyard Design workshop, where guests will learn how to plant edible foods in their gardens, and how to live more sustainably. “I want to help people broaden their ideas and horizons for what they can plant in their own landscape.

Like Danielle, Tim worked firsthand with farmers in impoverished areas. “There are a lot of examples of broken relationships between the farmer and the land,” Tim says. “Something I love about ECHO is that ECHO seeks to restore that relationship, and I think the foundation for that is our faith. People need restored relationships with the Creator and his creation, and we try to do that here.”

In light of the Amazon fires and other land-based devastation in recent times, Tim tells me, “This might be a big statement, but there’s probably never been a greater need for farming practices that don’t damage the ability of the land to provide services.”

The Global Food & Farm Festival is part of ECHO’s mission to mitigate that damage, to apply a salve to the wound. Not only will the Festival celebrate the production yields at ECHO, but it also aims to educate guests on modern sustainability practices and ECHO’s mission to alleviate global hunger.

As Danielle and I walk back to the main office, we pass the first ECHO building, a tall wooden structure at the edge of a fruit tree arboretum, and a carambola tree that was one of the original seven trees planted by Dr. Price, founder of ECHO. The carambola has a thick knotted trunk, a sign of strong roots.

Coming through the back door, Danielle introduces me to Russ Luther, the tour guide. He tells me stories about goat poop used to make methane gas and about different people he meets while sharing information about ECHO.

Russ describes the way the Festival has changed over the years, for the better. “It has gotten more intentional about food and recipes. People ask me, ‘Is this still going to be there?’ and I tell them, ‘Yes, that is going to be there, but now we also have a coffee lecture or an edible food tour.’” One thing that stays the same, Russ says, is this: “The amazement I feel every time I walk in the gardens. It never gets old.” There is that same reverence again in his voice that I sensed when talking with Tim and Danielle.

Towards the end of my tour, Danielle points out more items in the garden made at ECHO. She shows me the plant boxes a group of volunteers built and the biogas digester, which needs to be fed. We pass through the urban section of the garden, where ECHO staff have used old tires as planters and used other recycled materials as tools for farming.

“We try to be as sustainable as possible,” Danielle says, “and make sure everything has a long-term purpose.” I hear some version of this statement from all the people I meet at ECHO, this commitment. I can tell the ECHO staff means it when they say they want to make something that lasts. •

The Boston Chamber Music Society is an ensemble of musicians who come together in different combinations to perform a chamber music repertoire from the Baroque era to the present day, joined by invited special guest artists. They present the longest-running chamber music series in the greater Boston area, performing monthly concerts at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre, as well as touring nationally and internationally. Ann Hobson Pilot was principal harpist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1980-2009, having joined in 1969 as assistant principal harp and principal with the Boston Pops. Before that she was principal harp of the Washington National Symphony. After her official retirement as principal harpist, she returned as soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, opening its 2009-2010 season and the Carnegie Hall season with the premiere of 'On Willows and Birches,’ a concerto for harp and orchestra written for her by John Williams.

The National Chopin Piano Competition of the United States, held in Miami every five years since 1975, is designed to offer performance opportunities and financial support to young American pianists, and to enable the Prize Winners to take part in the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland.

The Gould Piano Trio have remained at the forefront of the international chamber music scene for a quarter of a century. Launched by their first prize at the Melbourne Chamber Music Competition and subsequently selected as YCAT Artists, they had a successful debut at New Yo rk’s Weill Recital Hall. Their many appearances at London’s Wigmore Hall have included the complete piano trios of Dvorak, Mendelssohn and Schubert, plus a Beethoven cycle. Robert Plane’s career has included concerto appearances in Europe, Asia and the USA, with performances of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in Madrid with the City of London Sinfonia, Beijing with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and in the USA with the Virginia Symphony. Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the most successful composers of our time. Formed in 1976 and based in New York City, the Emerson String Quartet was one of the first quartets whose violinists alternated in the first chair position, and has maintained its stature as one of the world’s premier chamber music ensembles for more than four decades. The quartet has made more than 30 acclaimed recordings, and has been honored with nine Grammys (including two for Best Classical Album), three Gramophone Awards, the Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s 'Ensemble of the Year.' They have partnered in performance with stellar soloists including Reneé Fleming, Barbara Hannigan, Evgeny Kissin, Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman, to name a few. The Emerson String Quartet continues to perform as the quartet in residence at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. for its 41th season and serve as Quartet-in-Residence at Stony Brook University.

Iapproached the gate in the tall wooden fence and pulled the rope that brought forth a rich, deep clanging from the rather large bell hanging up above, signaling my arrival. Feeling only slightly more important than a second ago, I patiently waited for someone to welcome me inside Shy Wolf Sanctuary Education & Experience Center, better known as just Shy Wolf Sanctuary.

After a moment I humbly let myself in, quickly noticing that the place was quite busy with tour groups and volunteers walking the paths between securely fenced, spacious habitats. I ducked the commotion and soon enough was greeted warmly by Shy Wolf Executive Director Deanna Deppen, who in turn introduced me to Sanctuary co-founder Nancy Smith. The three of us then set off to meet their many residents.

Shy Wolf has been home to exotic rescues since 1993, when Nancy and husband Kent acquired a threelegged baby black Asian leopard named Moondance, who had lost her leg in an attack by a larger cat through the dividing fence of their enclosures. Then in 2000 they rescued four wolf pups in need of a home. By this time Deanna had started volunteering and recommended becoming an official nonprofit, which happened on January 19, 2001. She’s held the Executive Director title since 2017.

At any given moment, Shy Wolf provides a permanent home to over 60 captive-bred or rescued exotic animals housed on their 2.5-acre property. Over 50 active volunteers help keep the place running and animals taken care of.

Wolfdogs are generally considered unadoptable by domestic animal services and have nowhere else to go when their owners give them up. At presstime, a low content wolf/husky mix named Harley is adoptable; the rest are here for life. Aside from who they take in, each year they rescue between 20-100 wolfdogs in Florida and across the country. Deanna informs me that they receive daily calls and emails alerting them to yet another in distress. Shy Wolf works with a network of trusted organizations and

rescuers to place these animals in foster homes for eventual adoption.

Amid the Sanctuary’s lush tropical setting in the Golden Gate Estates area of Naples, current residents include ten-year-old raccoons, Cimarron the cougar, Melbourne the Australian singing dog, coyotes, foxes, gopher tortoises and yes, quite a few wolves and wolfdogs, abandoned and/or donated when they got to be just too much to handle by their owners.

“I didn’t find my purpose ‘til my late 40s, but I feel that it’s to make life better for others,” declares Nancy. She is very dedicated to fulfilling that purpose every day here at Shy Wolf, where their official mission is to “reconnect people and animals through education.”

Mikey the raccoon paces back and forth along a walking platform high inside the habitat he shares with his brother Andy. Deanna shares that they were brought here at only three hours old. Having been raised in captivity, they cannot be returned to the wild. She recalls how they initially had to be nursed with a bottle. The raccoon bros now contentedly live the good life relaxing in their hammocks slung close to the ceiling, from which as we saw, Andy lazily regarded us.

Further down the path, we stop to visit Melbourne, a friendly New Guinea highland wild dog, whose captive breed name is New Guinea singing dog, a subspecies of the dingo. I sat on the bench in his enclosure and he came right over to say hi. An A-frame house was located in Melbourne’s habitat to provide shade and a

comfortable sleeping spot. The outside of the house is artfully painted, part of Shy Wolf’s Healing Hearts program.

Through Healing Hearts, Shy Wolf invites children from organizations like Youth Haven, Shelter for Abused Women & Children and Avow House to visit and create art projects that not only help them emotionally, but are also a good connection and benefit for the animals.

Deanna confirms, “We’ve really grown the Healing Hearts program to include the MAC (My Autism Connection) program, a human trafficking (help) program that’s just forming, and Home Base for Veterans, which is run by the Red Sox.” Home Base for Veterans marks the first time that the program has been used for adults. She points out the similarity of a veteran’s situation to that of a wolf dog. Veterans have come home from the war world trying to reacclimate to society, just as many of Shy Wolf’s residents are readjusting to a safe, secure home.

That home could be getting much bigger, if plans to acquire land and build a new state-of-the-art facility continue favorably. In a wild card move to garner publicity back in May 2019, Shy Wolf put a bid on a 47-acre property at the corner of Wilson & Golden Gate Blvds., not far from their current location. They didn’t anticipate actually winning the bid, as developers were vying for the land as well. Surprisingly, a deal is in the making which would give Shy Wolf 20 of those acres, while the rest is zoned for development.

“We have a letter of intent, but we need the actual contract,” shares Deppen, “The zoning needs to be changed. We’re anticipating on closing on it in a year.” In the meantime, they are putting all the proper nonprofit pieces in place, like building a Board of Directors, doing an audit and feasibility study, and getting ready to launch a capital campaign by the summer. Deanna mentions an awareness campaign called “Friendraisers” that they’ve been doing in the meantime, where people can host a party and invite their friends who might be interested in supporting Shy Wolf, who in turn will be on hand with one of their ambassador animals.

Besides Friendraisers, Shy Wolf is also expanding awareness with a program recently launched in Lee County called ‘Living with Wildlife,’ where their education coordinator shows people what to do in case they encounter one of the many wild species living in southwest Florida like

possums, alligators, raccoons, coyotes and bobcats.

Deppen says, “We discuss what draws them into conflict with us and how we can live with them. We suggest carrying an air horn to scare them away, something as simple as that. People don’t realize it could happen when they’re out walking their pet.” She adds that they can easily bring this presentation to anyone, along with ambassador animals like a wolf dog, singing dogs, or possibly a gopher tortoise. Shy Wolf quite often takes their educational presentations to local elementary schools as well.

Back at the Center, we visit with a wolf named Maraya, who has been here since she was a three-week old pup in 2010. It’s a treat to discover that this Shy Wolf ambassador is also a cuddler! We stop by Yuki’s enclosure; he’s the famous giant wolfdog and one-time viral video star that put the national (and international) spotlight on Shy Wolf a year ago. Nancy informs me that Yuki is battling cancer, but has been responding well to immunity-boosting supplements. I also meet Mohan, whose howl was instantly picked up by the other canine residents. The collective sound was raw animal magic. I could see why so many people enjoy visiting Shy Wolf, never mind caring for all the beautiful creatures that reside here. Although the individual habitats are spacious and well-kept, plans for the new facility include a building that will withstand a category 5 hurricane, protecting both Shy Wolf residents and others that are brought here when the next big one hits. Nancy shows me on a blueprint how enclosures will offer varying scenery and habitats, including streams, a waterfall and more, so the animals will be able to enjoy a variety of activities.

She also reflects on three things that the animals at Shy Wolf have taught her: That it doesn’t matter how old or young you are, we all need a purpose; animals aren’t that much different from people as some build walls to keep the pain out, and based on animals that can’t gel with their current situation, sometimes you have to clip things loose that you can’t do a thing about.
