Rauschenberg Exhibit at Rauschenberg Gallery
Florida SouthWestern State College’s Bob Rauschenberg Gallery is hosting the first solo exhibition of world-renowned artist Robert Rauschenberg since his memorial at the gallery in 2008 and the first installation in more than a decade of his monumental 100 foot long Chinese Summerhall (1984) photograph.
‘RAUSCHENBERG: China/America Mix’ is the artist’s 16th one-man show at the College since the Gallery was founded in 1979 and celebrates the 10-year anniversary of the Gallery’s renaming and dedication in his honor.
Widely-acknowledged as one of the most important artists of the 20th Century, Rauschenberg is credited with pioneering the transition from European modernism to American pop art and was a local Lee County resident for nearly four decades. His effect is particularly evident in China. Inspired by his 1982 visit to Jing Xian and his work at the
ancient Xuan Paper Mill on his ‘7 [Chinese] Characters ‘collages (which is included in this exhibition), Rauschenberg returned to China in 1985 to mount his Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI) exhibition at the National Gallery in Beijing. Open to the public for less than three weeks, Rauschenberg’s ROCI/China show attracted more than 300,000 visitors and is still considered a seminal cultural event.
The ‘RAUSCHENBERG: China/America Mix’ exhibit is free and open to the public MondayFriday 10am-4pm & Saturday 11am-3pm. The Bob Rauschenberg gallery is located on the campus of Florida SouthWestern State College (formerly known as Edison State College), 8099 College Pkwy. in Fort Myers. For information, call 489-9313.

Explores The Possibility of Function
Florida Gulf Coast University Art Gallery is presenting ‘Yevgeniya Kaganovich: Possibility of Function,’ a survey spanning 15 years of art work exploring sculptural extensions of the body, alluding to a variety of imagined uses. Her
sculptures and installations ask the audience to imagine engaging in personal connections through artificial means. Each object has an implied connection to the eyes, ears or mouth.
The works in this exhibition are made of artificial materials such as rubber and nylon, reminiscent of medical or safety devices. But the forms are exaggerated and absurd, contradicting themselves.
Alongside her older works, she is exhibiting a new installation entitled ‘grow,’ which uses reclaimed plastic bags to create a landscape of multiplying plant forms found growing throughout the gallery.

Dorsey Scores with ‘Fourth Down’
by Bill Levy
DAVID DORSEY WAS ALL SMILESwhen discussing his new book, Fourth Down in Dunbar. The book explains how high school boys in the Fort Myers neighborhood of Dunbar, a neighborhood where drugs and crime are prevalent, have a difficult time building a productive life. To make things even more difficult, many of the boys were raised without a father.
“I’m very happy,” Dorsey said. “Many of the stores [where the books are sold] are telling us they can’t keep it in stock. It has been a tremendous success. They need to keep reordering it.”
Part of the book’s success stems from the author himself. While many authors have attempted to write a book in an area that they are not familiar with (such as Buzz Bissinger, who while a reporter in Philadelphia, spent a year in Odessa, Texas to compile information for Friday Night Lights , that is not the case with Dorsey. As a sports reporter for the Southwest Florida’s News-Press , Dorsey has been a familiar face on the sidelines of high school football games for nearly two decades.
an area known for drugs. It also produced many NFL football players such as Deion Sanders, Jevon Kearse, Phillip Buchanon, Earnest Graham, Mario Henderson, and Anthony Ascends. The community is aware of this and that was not lost on Dorsey. He devotes an entire chapter to Drew Rosenhaus, a prominent NFL agent, who spoke at a summer camp in nearby Immokalee, where hundreds of kids from Dunbar had attended. While Rosenhaus pointed out the amount of money NFL players could make, which excited the kids, Dorsey notes that a very small percentage of athletes will actually make the NFL.
“The idea was not to get people that read the book thinking they can make the NFL,” Dorsey explains.
“The difference between me [and other authors] is that I’ve been a part of this community,” he said. “While I didn’t know everything, there was a familiarity I had.”
Dorsey said one of the things he enjoyed most about writing the book was being able to interact with not only the players, but family members, friends and others who influenced their lives.
Nearly two dozen players from Dunbar have played in the National Football League. Dorsey describes the environment they grew up in. While some things have stayed the same in some respects over the years, other things have changed with desegregation, which ultimately closed Dunbar High School for a time until a new one opened in 2000. There was not a lot of commerce in the area, while the drug trade thrived.
Many people in Dunbar have turned to drugs and Dorsey hammers this point time and time again. One of the book’s key chapters is centered in an interview with Ronnie Tape. Despite having a promising career as a musician, where he would often fly back and forth to Fort Myers from Los Angeles, he got caught up in the drug trade and became a well-known dealer in the area. Tape relates in the book that he was hoping to be able to help develop more business opportunities in Dunbar, but utimately was arrested. Tape was in prison when Dorsey interviewed him. “Getting an interview with Ronnie Tape was my biggest challenge,” Dorsey said. “I would not have been able to write the book the way I wanted to without it.”
NFLplayers who grew up in Dunbar include Deion Sanders, Jevon Kearse, Phillip Buchanon, Earnest Graham, Mario Henderson, and Anthony Ascends. Dorsey would like to see the book developed into a movie such as ‘Friday Night Lights’ or ‘The Blind Side.’
The unemployment rate was significantly higher than other parts of the county, while wages were lower.
With the racial makeup of the area virtually unchanged for about 60 years, Dorsey writes about about how many of players had few African-American role models to look up to.
In large part due to those factors, as well as the area’s location, it became
This was an importatnt chapter. It illustrates just how easy it is to get involved with drugs. Dorsey notes that if some of the drug dealers knew that a kid had a chance to be a great football player, then the dealers themselves would steer tthe athletes away from drugs.
While there is mention of players whose careers were derailed by time in prison, a good part of the book features the stories of NFL players from Dunbar and describes the challenges they faced. Deion Sanders, who went on to make the NFL Hall of Fame, was the selfdescribed ‘Jackie Robinson’ of some of his youth sports leagues, as his mom saw to it that he got the best coaching available, which often meant playing in predominately white leagues. Sanders also had to endure long bus rides because desegregation forced him to attend North Fort Myers High School. But he focused on his athletics and did not succumb to temptations that many of his peers did.
In the case of Jevon Kearse, Dorsey relates how Kearse overcame much personal tragedy, which

arts BOOKS
included the murder of his father and other family members, and had to take over as head of the household.
There is also the story of Anthony Ascends, who played at the University of South Florida and then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was his close relationship with his mom that prevented him from getting involved with drugs.
“There are a number of things that have to fall their way [for players to make it to the NFL],” says Dorsey, when asked if there was a common theme for players making it to the pros. “They have to have athletic ability, but they also to have the love and support of people, and many times it’s the mother.”
In the chapter ‘Being Earnest,’ Dorsey details how while Earnest Graham made it to the NFL, his younger brother Brandon was not able to escape the drug culture and spent time in prison.
The reader also is reminded that in addition to the negative forces boys must overcome from residing in the Dunbar area, they also have to overcome many of the same obstacles as any other young boy. This was pointed out in the chapter on Mario Henderson, who despite having weight issues in high school still made the NFL.
Fourth Down in Dunbar is sure to be enjoyed
by a wide variety of people. Besides relating to the local high school football fan, Dorsey connects to the greater Fort Myers community, constantly referencing various streets, schools and locations, putting his reader right there with him as he is telling the story. The book will also be of interest to sports fans everywhere, as he
describes the stories of so many players reaching the NFL from such a small area. It will also interest readers everywhere with the stories of people overcoming hardships and tragedies to achieve great success, as well as cautionary tales of lives wasted and lost to drug abuse and criminality.
“I wanted to do a couple of things [when writing the book],” Dorsey confesses. “I wanted to show people across the country the contributions that Dunbar and Fort Myers have made to the NFL. I think sometimes Dunbar gets a bad rap and I hope this shows just how supportive and encouraging they can be.”
He also hopes people will see just what the title Fourth Down In Dunbar means.
“When you get to fourth down, it is often a desperate and urgent situation,” Dorsey says. “It’s OK to punt if you need to. That’s better than going down the drugs path. I want people to see how Earnest Graham returned back to the area as an insurance salesman. I want people to know Mario Henderson is trying to get a job in the school system. It is just not about making the NFL.”
Dorsey adds that he would like to see the book developed into some sort of televison program, like ESPN’s ‘30 for 30,’ and/or a movie such as Friday Night Lights or The Blind Side. •

“I would love to see the development of platforms that allow collaborative and crowdsourced histories in a way so that royalties and revenues could be allocated based on who contributed what and whose sections got read.”
Isaacson on Innovators
by Wendy Smith
WALTER ISAACSON BEGAN COLLECTINGmaterial
for The Innovators , his joint history of the Internet and the personal computer, in the early 1990s, but his fascination with technology dates back to the childhood of this self-confessed ‘electronics geek’ in New Orleans. “My father and my uncles were electrical engineers,” he says, sitting in a Simon & Schuster conference room two months before the book’s October publication. “I loved building HeathKits as a kid, and I can recall making my first ham radio, sorting the transistors and soldering the circuits, then being able to talk with people around the world. I’m such a geek I even liked CB radios! When online services came along in the 1980s, I found this notion of bulletin boards and online communities to be mesmerizing. I still remember the static and screech of my first modem connecting me to that magical realm.”
At 62, Isaacson has the brisk, businesslike manner you’d expect from the veteran of a long career as a journalist and media executive. (He capped two decades at Time Inc. with a five-year stint as Time magazine’s managing editor, then served as CEO of CNN before becoming president and CEO of the Aspen Institute in 2003.) Yet his voice rings with the wonder and enthusiasm of that HeathKit-building boy as he considers the innovations that led to our present ultra-connected state. “The digital revolution was driven by the ability to have your own personal computer but to share information and interact socially with anybody, anywhere. It’s so phenomenal that we sometimes don’t pay attention to how amazing it is.”
He took advantage of this phenomenon with his own manuscript. “While I was writing about the invention of the Internet, I realized that it was designed to allow collaboration and even sharing, and I thought: Well, why don’t I see how well that would work today? So I posted chapters I was drafting and gave people the opportunity to add things and make comments. I did it on five or six different sites. The one that worked best was Medium, which had been developed by Ev Williams, who also created Blogger and helped to create Twitter. Some famous people added their own tales to the chapters: Stewart Brand, who invented The WELL, and Dan Bricklin, who helped develop the first spreadsheets. I got in touch with them and incorporated those into the book.”
“I would love to see the development of platforms that allow collaborative and crowdsourced histories in a way so that royalties and revenues could be allocated based on who contributed what and whose sections got read,” he continues. “I think one of the next great inventions of the digital age will be simple, Bitcoin-like systems so that people can pay for content and those payments can be allocated to encourage crowdsourcing. A book could be a living thing, filled with multimedia and interactive components. There are neither the platforms nor the payment systems yet to make that possible, but I suspect that in ten years you’ll have collaborative, interactive, crowdsourced and curated media that is somewhere in between narrative history and roleplaying games.”
Traditional publishers were slow to recognize that the digital age would require new forms of media, says Isaacson, who had a front-row seat for the struggle to adapt as editor of new media for Time Inc. in the early 1990s. “At first, the most important online places were services like The WELL that were true communities of people discussing things. When big publishing companies like Time started putting their magazines online, too often we relegated this notion of community to bad comments sections that nobody read and were inhabited mainly by trolls. We’re now getting back to the idea of media being a collective activity, not the publication of stories being handed down from on high, and that’s very healthy. The great impact of the digital revolution is the same as that of the printing press: it takes power away from centralized organizations and empowers the individual.”
As an individual writer, Isaacson has been well served by traditional publishing. The Wise Men (1986), a group portrait of six key figures in the post-World War II political establishment, and his 1992 biography of Henry Kissinger both centered on foreign policy. It was during the 11-year gap between the publications of Kissinger and Benjamin Franklin: An American Life, he says, that his authorial focus began

to shift to scientific subjects “I was already gathering information about the digital revolution, but it didn’t quite ripen, and I wanted to do Ben Franklin because he is actually a precursor. He was the consummate information entrepreneur. He formed newspaper chains and the postal service, and he believed that the free flow of information bent the arc of history towards individual empowerment. I think there are remarkable similarities between Franklin and people like Tim Berners-Lee, who created the Worldwide Web.”
“When I realized how much Franklin loved science, that pushed me to write about Albert Einstein [ Einstein: His Life and Universe , 2007], whose theories about space and time were just as beautiful as Lord Byron’s line, ‘She walks in beauty, like the night.’ People interested in the humanities often do not appreciate the beauty of the sciences, but one of my great interests has always been the way humanities and sciences interact. That was embodied in Steve Jobs, who always used to end his product presentations with a street sign showing the intersection of the liberal arts and technology, saying ‘That’s where true creativity occurs.’”
The knowledge that Apple’s founder
was seriously ill prompted Isaacson to take a two-year break from what was then intended to be a history of the Internet to research and write the bestselling Steve Jobs (2011). “I had been interviewing people starting in the 1990s, always thinking that I was doing a book about the Internet. When I interviewed Bill Gates, he said, ‘No: the Internet and personal computer grew up together.’ Steve Jobs’ life convinced me that writing the history of
both made for a richer tale, spotlighting the collaboration and teamwork that went into them. We biographers sometimes overemphasize the role of the lone individual. After writing about Steve Jobs, my goal in this book was to put Steve Jobs in context. He wasn’t just a kid in his parents’ garage; he was part of a big historical phenomenon. He picked up ideas from all over the place, and he created a great team of designers and engineers around him, starting with Steve Wozniak.”
Jobs and Wozniak, Gates and Paul Allen at Microsoft are only the best-known of the many brilliant teams whose collective work is chronicled in The Innovators , which lucidly traces the complicated, sometimes contentious group dynamics behind the myriad technological breakthroughs that made the Internet and the personal computer possible. It seems a highly appropriate project for Isaacson, who has written nine books while also immersed in demanding day jobs. “It helps me to be engaged with people at an office or an institute or a magazine rather than working alone,” he comments. “Perhaps that colors my view of the importance of collaboration and teamwork in the creative process.” •

W esley Stace talks about writing songs and novels
ANINTERVIEWBY A NDREW E LIAS
English-born Wesley Stace has been better known as John Wesley Harding since his debut album received rave reviews in 1988. His personal, clever, witty and humorous songwriting, paired with his mixture of folk and pop music traditions, quickly earned him a loyal and substantial following. His new album, Self-Titled , is his 22nd, but first under his real name.
Stace published his first novel, Misfortune , in 2005, under his real name. The novel was nominated for several awards and prizes, and was chosen by Amazon.com as
one of the 10 Best Novels of the year as well as one of the Washington Post’s Books of the Year. His second novel, By George, was one of the New York Library’s Book to Remember of 2007. Charles Jessold, his third book, was chosen as one of the Wall Street Journal’s Top 10 Books of 2011. Stace has recently published his fourth novel, Wonderkid (OVERLOOK).
Wesley will be appearing at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Sanibel Island Writers Conference, November 6-9.He will be performing songs from his new album and entire catalogue as John Wesley Harding, as well as reading excerpts from Wonderkid. He will also be leading a workshop and participating in a panel discussion on songwriting.
I asked Stace about his writing.
•
Leonard Cohen recently said that a song on his new album took 20 years to complete, and Keith Richards has said that he’s grateful to be in the room when the song ‘arrives’. Which is closer to your experiences?
WESLEY STACE: The former, though I never took 20 years. I think if you’re receptive, like to write, and practice, a song generally arrives sooner or later. Plus I would almost certainly rather have Leonard Cohen as a role model.
Some writers and artists have a specific work routine they follow while others are sparked by sudden inspiration. Do you have a routine when writing or any tricks for dealing with writer’s block?
I don’t believe in writer’s block, though I understand why it might be thought to be happening, and I don’t really have routines, beyond the fact that novels require me to be at home and at my desk (though I can edit previously written stuff anywhere), whereas songs I often write on the fly, maybe on a train, in a bar, in the notes on my iPhone. I often don’t even sit down to write or finish a song: it just happens in my head and then I record it on my phone and it’s done. I used to carry a notebook, but never cameras or tape recorders — and now I have all those gadgets on a phone.
How does your writing process differ when songwriting or writing your novel?
Well, novel writing just takes much more concentration. A novel takes a couple of years and a song may take ten minutes. It’s like comparing an ocean liner and a skateboard. The writing isn’t similar at all but I do think that they’re ultimately coming from the same place.
How do your songwriting talents help you when writing your novels, and vice versa?
Writing songs taught me to trust in words, literally to let them do the work some of the time, with rhymes and assonance and so forth. That means I’m not self-conscious about just moving forward when I’m not 100% sure what I want to say: it all sorts itself out in the end. Sometimes you might even find that your subconscious has created something absolutely vital without your knowledge, right under your nose.
Wonderkid is your fourth novel. After years as a songwriter, what inspired you to start writing novels?
The feeling that there were narratives that I couldn’t possibly fit into a song.
Can you tell us about your new book, Wonderkid?
It’s about a new wave band who make a deal with the devil and have to face the consequences. It’s also about entertaining children.
Wonderkid has been called a ‘behind-the-scenes’ expose, as well as a sharp satire of, the music business. How does the music business and the publishing world differ?
Well, I’m not sure but one way is that the publishing world is much more ‘hand-shakey.’ I think you’re more liable to get screwed over in the music business. I’m not saying it wouldn’t happen in publishing, but certainly it’s a little more old-fashioned, the whole process. I could give specific examples.
Wonderkid is about rock ‘n’ roll and is a ‘coming-of-age’ story and is a ‘deal-with-the-devil’ parable - but it also is about the relationship between a father and son. What did you bring to the book as a musician, as a man and as a father?
Well, I’ve hung out in a lot of dressing rooms, tour busses, vans and backstages, so that stuff is at least right, or right in my experience! As a father, I have a son; as a son, I have a father — and we’re all in the book some way or other. Most of my books are about families in some way. My wife pointed this out and I hadn’t quite noticed! How have you improved as a novelist since your first book?
I am more confident. The first book took ages, the second one less time, the third one less than that, etc. Also I don’t fret about things seeming too unlikely. People never complain about the things you’re worried they’d
After 21 albums over 25 years, your new album is the first released under your real name instead of John Wesley Harding ? Why is it important for it to be by
was a lot of fairly personal songs and it felt like a good album to release under my real name. And basically I just wanted to get everything under one roof: it was tiring being introduced as two people! Plus, Wesley Stace was now known to some degree, through the novels, so that made the decision a little easier. Do you have advice for writers working on perfecting their craft or trying to get published — or for singer/songwriters regarding the music business? Only ever do what pleases you. That way, when you’re not successful, you’ll still be happy in your art. Plus the thing that is true to you is the best thing you can offer the world any way, because no one else can do it, or be you. •
W esley Stace will be participating in a Songwriting Panel, Friday afternoon, November 7 and performing that evening in concert at BIGARTS Center. He will also lead a workshop entitled ‘Songwriting on Demand,’ Saturday morning, November 8 at the Sanibel Public Library. BIGARTSCenter is located at 900 Dunlop Rd. on Sanibel. The Sanibel Library is located nearby at 770 Dunlop Rd. For information about the FGCU Sanibel Island Writers Conference, please call 590-7421.

ort Myers’ Gulf Coast Symphony is proudly celebrating its 20th anniversary season this year, and boy are they excited. The stellar lineup of concerts, educational programs and community outreach is sure to please audiences of all ages. It’s quite remarkable, coming from an organization comprised mostly of volunteers taking a break from their day jobs.
Symphony Founder, Music and Executive Director Maestro Dr. Andrew Kurtz shares a preview of the 2014-2015 season: “The 20th Anniversary season will highlight the best of what makes Gulf Coast Symphony unique and impactful in our community, continue the organization’s tradition of innovative programming and dynamic symphonic performances. And our active community engagement and commitment to arts education.
“Our repertoire appeals to a wide demographic,” he continues.“ “Family concerts, which include educational children’s activities and our Musical Discovery Zone; the popular Symphonic Pops concerts with guest performers such as the Brubeck Brothers Jazz Quartet, Tony award-winning Broadway stars and Cirque performers; classical concerts of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony; Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and even a fully-staged opera, Verdi’s La Traviata
Kurtz adds, “Our classical concerts feature soloists who are rising young professionals. Through our partnerships with Virginia Warring Piano Competition, Astral Artists and the Sphinx Competition, we present their winners in concert, in solo recital and artist residencies. Gulf Coast Symphony also partners with other local cultural organizations, including the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers, Florida Gulf Coast University, the Alliance of the Arts, and the Florida Repertory Theater, as well as the local library systems to co-present programs that have broad community appeal.”
Audiences can also look forward to a 20th anniversary concert at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall on February 22. ‘The Glory of Gershwin’ celebrates the music of the great George Gershwin, hosted by guest artist and Broadway star, Christiane Noll. A black tie dinner anniversary celebration will be held in the newly renovated lobby of the Hall following the show.
The growth of a program as varied and exciting as Gulf Coast Symphony’s can be traced back to Dr. Kurtz’s arrival to the area 23 years ago as Assistant Conductor and Education Director of the Southwest Florida Symphony. In this role, he was active in the community, where he discovered a large number of musicians who no longer had opportunities to play in the symphonic environment.
“The other orchestra had transferred from community structure to professional structure. That change impacts rehearsal schedules and time demands. A professional symphony generally rehearses three days prior to performance. For someone who’s retired or working another profession, that’s a huge time commitment. I decided that I would start a new community-based group,” he explains. “I felt that there was absolutely a need for a community orchestra in the area.”
NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2014 24 www.ftmyersmagazine.com
Dr. Kurtz remembers how that first year, even with very little advertising and some flyers, a large number of musicians volunteered for the new orchestra. Many of them are still members today, including their concertmaster and principal viola.
He notes, “We have retired professionals and professional teachers, performing alongside people who play as an avocation. There are doctors in our organization.” Music is a popular hobby for medical professionals and many Symphony members are healthcare professionals.
Operating as a community orchestra allows Gulf Coast Symphony to give volunteer musicians a place to perform, while using the option to hire additional professional musicians based on the needs of individual concerts. Twenty years in, he is also noticing the trend of younger musicians joining the organization. College students and music teachers play alongside dentists and accountants.
“Members of the Symphony have auditioned and are on our orchestra roster. Some of them are only in Southwest Florida four months a year. 60% are year-round residents and 40% are snowbirds,” Dr. Kurtz affirms. “On average I get one phone call or email a month from people who are looking where to spend their retirement years. We are part of that decision. Some of them will try out the area first and try us out as well.”
www.ftmyersmagazine.com 25 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2014
“There are certainly months in the year I know there can be demands that are difficult for people.’ he admits. “Part of our structure allows for players to skip a concert if need be to balance their lives.” He adds, “You need to be able to handle the schedule and technical demands of the music. Our repertoire is not the easiest.”
Kurtz explains. “Our ultimate goal is to bring members of our community together, using symphonic music as the means of creating that synergy.”
Growing out of the desire within the members of the Symphony to perform great works of music is the call to share the music in an educational environment focusing largely on those who need it the most —at risk kids.
“The benefits of music education are profound, and have a significant, lasting impact not only on brain development, but also on social development,” Dr. Kurtz stresses, adding, “Children develop goaldirected behavior and skills that increase academic and social success. Furthermore, such programs are known to improve selfesteem and self-perception so that students can achieve their full potential. This translates into increased school attendance, academic motivation and ultimately, achievement.”
“For the past 11 years we have been the entertainment for the Community Cooperative Ministries soup kitchen benefit concert each year. We also do free outdoor concerts,” he continues. “We created Taste of the Cape last year as a partnership with the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce. Now it’s the highlight cultural event of the year. We perform our Sunset Concert at the end of the day.” Taste of Cape Coral, on Sunday, March 1, is the finale of a 20-day stretch of free music reaching all corners of Lee County throughout January and February.
Kurtz notes, “We have a partnership
with the Lee County Library system, doing a symphony storytime for ages 2-5. We read a story with a musician in it, and a musician will be there to show and play their instrument. This is happening at five different branches of the library system. We’re also doing two Music Discovery Zones, where performers are coming in for free afternoon preview concerts outside the library.” Also at each library branch, Gulf Coast Symphony has instituted a symphony pass that can be checked out and used to attend a community concert.
“It’s a way to provide access to a concert which some may not be able to afford to attend,” Dr. Kurtz explains. He also shares information about an exciting new partnership with the Harlem Heights Foundation called ‘MusicWorks!’. This afterschool program is offered four days a week, 1 1/2 hours a day for 35 kids. Geared for grades 1-4, ‘MusicWorks!‘ provides musical instrument instruction, as
well as the background to help students grow as students, musicians and people.
The education doesn’t stop with the younger crowd. Gulf Coast Symphony is sponsoring an online course for college students. Each 4-week course is free. Dr. Kurtz highlights the particulars, “Each week there are about five or six lessons that are 5-8 minutes long, covering the lives of the three main composers we are studying this year: Mahler, Verdi and Beethoven.” he adds, “It’s all part of our lifelong learning activities. This is a college-level class but taught for someone who knows nothing about classical music. It’s being taught by two people with doctorates in music, myself and a professor at Florida Gulf Coast University. The thing about the course is that students participating in the class have the opportunities to interact through message boards.”
Dr. Kurtz explains that it all happens from a shared vision for the community between their Board of Directors and members of the orchestra, “When you do things successfully and people come to your hall and get excited about what you’re doing in the community, they become huge supporters. It’s my job as artistic leader to ensure that our programs remain varied, interesting and dynamic. Overall there are over 100 events. He continues, “Our mission is to bring this community together through music. We want to be able to have the largest civic footprint possible to bring our love and passion for music. It’s about going into the communities where people live and impacting their lives. All of our growth in the next 10 years is not with our performances, but in growing our engagement activities and lifelong activities for adults.”

All in the Family C
HARLIE HADEN IS ONE of the founding fathers of jazz. Any list of the greatest jazz bassists of all time would have to include his name. He was a member of Ornette Coleman’s early bands and also played and recorded with a wide variety of musicians for more than 60 years – from Art Pepper, Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett to Pat Methany, Jan Garbarek and Jim Hall, with whom he has recently released his last recording. Haden passed this past July. Hall passed six months earlier. Their new album, simply titled Charlie Haden / Jim Hall, is a recording of the historic concert with the guitarist at the 1990 Montreal Jazz Festival. The musicianship is astounding, an intimate sonic dance between two artists at the height of their game. The set includes jazz standards ‘Body and Soul’ and ‘Skylark, more adventurous covers of Coleman’s ‘Turnaround’ and Monk’s ‘Bemsha Swing, plus two originals each from Haden and Hall. The music travels through chamber, bop and Latin jazz. For the most part, it’s intimate and bluesy, tasteful and straight-ahead jazz, but there are several moments of real excitement and an undeniable electricity between these two that makes the concert – and now the recording – so memorable
Charlie Haden’s album was released shortly after his daughters, triplets, released their debut recording as a group. Although each has had successful musical careers of their own, The Haden Triplets, is the first time they’ve recorded all together. Although the music is not like their father’s jazz, it is still very much influenced and inspired by his catalogue. They have learned well the
by Andrew Elias
essence and nuance of the same music of their father and grandparents, who were a popular country & western act in the mid-west midcentury. Their sound is steeped in the Appalachian mountain music and southern Gospel music traditions, as well as country & western music. And who better to help them create this Americana soundscape than Ry Cooder, guitarist and musicologist extraordinaire. Cooder achieves a stark sound, both raw and crisp, that captures the emotional closeness of the sisters’ remarkable voices, adding minimal musical embellishment to their testimony.
Like the sirens calling in the Coen Brothers’ film O’ Brother, Where Art Thou, the sisters (Tanya, Rachel & Petra)sing the most gorgeous and tender harmonies. Melancholy yet alluring, sweetness and soulful.
The collection includes covers of songs by Webb Pierce, the Louvin Brothers, Ralph Stanley, Kitty Wells, Bill Monroe, and The Carter Family, among others, as well as my favorite track, Nick Lowe’s ‘Raining, Raining.’ Lest you think the album is all sad songs, rest assured that they are never depressing and always entertaining. The album is a celebration of, as much as an homage to, particularly personal music of a bygone era, seemingly so long ago and far away yet no less honest and true today. It should make their dad and grandparents proud.
PetraHaden released her 5th solo album in 2013. Petra Goes to the Movies is a collection of mostly a cappella versions of classic movie themes from popular films like Rebel Without a Cause, Psycho, Taxi Driver, Cool Hand Luke, and Tootsie to
The Haden Triplets was released on Jack White’s Thirdman Records label.

acclaimed indie films like Cinema Paradisio, Big Night, Bagdad Café . and 8 1 / 2 . The album, like her previous release, Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out, showcases her stunning voice and inventive vocal arrangements. Here she adds accompaniment on two songs, with pianist Brad Mehldau and guitarist Bill Frisell joining her on one song each. Petra is a vocalist’s vocalist: a marvelous technician, inspired artist and creative explorer. Their younger brother, Josh, a bassist like his dad, also recently released an album this year, Sargent Place , with his band Spain. It is Spain’s 6th album, and has garnered the same kind of praise from critics and fans as the others. Josh Haden’s music also contains the music chromosomes of the Haden family musical DNA. Spain’s music draws from all those traditions
and genres, creating a modern, very 21st century hybrid pop music.
Spain’s music has been called ‘alternative’ or ‘adult’ or ‘indie’ rock. Those general and flexible terms are too often used to describe music that just can’t be easily categorized because it’s original and smart yet accessible and rhythmic. In that case, I guess that fits Spain just fine.

The songs on Sargent Place are spiritual and romantic and Haden’s vocals are smoky and sexy and smooth, with a charming vulnerability. ‘It Could Be Heaven’ and ‘To Be a Man’ are standouts, as is the beautiful and fitting, ‘You and I,’ which features Charlie Haden. It was the last piece of music his dad recorded. Charlie must be a proud papa. •
