ingenuity has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles across the United States.
After its retirement in 1978, it began a new life as an attraction to the newly opened Naples Depot Cultural Center.
For nearly two decades the Budd Car offered Naples Depot visitors a unique glimpse into the glory days of the railroads, but as the years wore on, the car began to show its age and the effects of the harsh Southwest Florida weather. Singing to the Soul V
OCAL
TALENT IS DISCOVERED,learned,
then perfected. It is a personal accomplishment that becomes a passion. To explain it is complicated and unique to the individual. Jeffrey Faux, director of the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers shares his thoughts on the subject. “To sing is to speak directly to the soul of the listener. We never forget that. We want every piece we sing to inspire, to move and to change our listeners in a profound way.”
The Mastersingers, the premiere choral ensemble of Southwest Florida, was organized in 2001 by Edward Bataglia and a group of talented men and women. What began as a small chorus of about 20 dedicated singers and an experienced director, became a respected choral ensemble who, through the years, have partnered with world renown conductors and soloists.
The group has grown to just under 90 vocalists and is a conglomerate of singers of all ages and from all walks of life. The common denominator that has led them to success is a firm commitment to their craft.
Nine years ago Faux, a former music teacher from New Jersey, advanced from Assistant Director of the Mastersingers to Director. A graduate of Westminster Choir College in New Jersey, he served as an adjunct instructor of music education. Faux completed a Masters Degree in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University. He brought all of that wisdom with him to Fort Myers, plus decades of experience leading church, school and choral community groups.
Under his tutelage the organization has formed spin off groups, incorporated an educational program, instituted a scholarship program, and increased their annual schedule. Their performance calendar has escalated from two concerts a year (Christmas and spring) to at least 12 in various venues throughout Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral and Sanibel and even Europe.
During his tenure the organization has evolved to world renowned status. International appearances became a part of the agenda years ago when the Mastersingers were approached by a global production company to perform in Europe. “We decided to give it a try and joined forces with two other ensembles from the United States,” Faux explains. “ We loved it. Now we try to participate at least every other year. It’s exciting and we take great pleasure in meeting new people who share the same interests as we do. Performing for an entirely different audience is also a rewarding experience.” To date, they have per-
formed in Italy and Spain, and this year their destination is Paris, France.
In an effort to keep the choir membership at a respectable number, auditions are perpetually open. Faux explains, “We are always open to adding new talent. It’s necessary if we want to keep a respectable number of active members. For various reasons we have an approximate turnover of 10% annually. Some people leave because of age, some due to relocation, some for other reasons, so we are continuously looking for new talent.”
To become a member of the Mastersingers, candidates must be over 18 years of age and successfully complete and pass an intense audition, as well as commit to further the art of choral music and share the vision of the group. Each person is judged on a myriad of factors including experience and vocal quality.
“Our ultimate goal is to keep membership between 90 and 100,” Faux says. “If we exceed that number we run into space problems. We require a large stage and there aren’t many in this area.”
But Faux found a way to also take advantage of the smaller venues. He says they want to entertain small as well as large audiences, so he successfully addressed this problem by creating the Fort Myers Mastersingers Chamber Chorus. It is made up of 24 singers who offer Mastersinger quality on a smaller scale. The chorus not only performs concerts, but are also available for private parties.
Their Mastersingers repertoire includes songs in many languages, nationally recognized soloists and conductors, as well a new music. While some performances are initiated and produced in-house others are accomplished in partnership with talented musicians such as the Southwest Florida Symphony, Naples Philharmonic and the Gulf Coast Symphony.
As always this years schedule includes master pieces such as ‘The Messiah and More,’ ‘Mozart’s Requiem’ and ‘Verdi Requiem.’
Three years ago Matt Koller, a 20 year veteran music teacher in the New Jersey and Florida public school systems approached the Board of Directors to propose a program geared toward a younger population. He received an enthusiastic, affirmative response and The City of Palms Youth Choir, an educational outreach program became a branch of the Mastersingers with Koller as the Director.
Koller says, “We knew there was a need for a

community youth choir that could provide vocal instruction, musical pedagogy, and performance opportunities beyond what the school system could offer. However, the success we’ve enjoyed in just a couple of seasons, the quality of singers that we have attracted, and the progress that we’ve made exceed all of our expectations.
“The concept is to enrich the lives of middle to high school aged children of diverse backgrounds by providing a musical experience unparalleled in any other program available for this age group. It also provides an opportunity to rehearse andperform music in a variety of styles, cultures, and languages while learning to read and understand music.”
Auditions consist of vocalizing and ear testing exercises. Candidates are encouraged to bring a piece of music with them if they so choose. There are currently 36 members. “These kids are our future musicians. Their desire to learn is insatiable. The choir gives them the opportunity to boast their skills in front of music lovers and gives them confidence,” says Faux.
Other opportunities for young talent that are separate yet under the Youth Choir umbrella is the Children’s Choir and the Concert Choir. Both groups attract youngsters from many area schools. Members of the Children’s Choir
(GRADES 3-6) concentrate on learning healthy singing techniques and how to become a part of social and community services through music. The focus of the Concert Choir (GRADES 7-12) is to develop aural, sight-reading and ensemble skills that are needed to perform challenging repertoire from several time periods and genres.
The City of Palms Youth Choir performs a wide variety of music ranging from Gregorian chants through modern compositions in the classical, pop, and music theater genres. They learn to sing in a primarily classical style. Audiences enjoy music accompanied by piano, organ, full orchestra, and a cappella music.
This talented group of young musicians kick off their season in November with a Cabaret and Season Preview scheduled to take place at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater in Fort Myers. Additional programs are scheduled for December, February and April. They perform programs with other local organizations as well as productions on their own and with adult choruses.
The Mastersingers is a charitable organization, benefiting several local organizations including Habitat for Humanity, the Youth Choir, and the Ruth Ann DeMaster Young Singers Scholarship. This scholarship, now in its fifth year, was developed to support talented
students in grades 6-11 by helping them obtain the high quality of training they deserve.
Besides ticket sales the group relies on donations from key sponsors in the area such as Sanibel Captiva Trust, Key Private Bank and Citibank. They have received grants from the City of Fort Myers Community Foundation, The LAT and Foulds Foundations, and The Galloway Group.
Unfortunately, Faux will be leaving his position at the end of this season. He explains, “This is a part-time job and I also work full time as the Director of Sacred Arts at First Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs.
“The Mastersingers have so much potential I feel it’s time for someone to take over who can devote the time necessary to move them to the next level, therefore I decided to resign. There are so many pluses involved in directing an independent group such as ours that I am sure there will be no problem attracting capable applicants. I do hope to serve on the Board of Directors in an advisory capacity.
He continues, “Throughout our 18 years of performing we have maintained a steady growth pattern and I don’t expect that to change. With new blood comes new ideas and I look forward to watching them come to fruition.” •

an INTERVIEWwith ROY SCHNEIDERby Andrew EliasMulti-instrumentalist and songwriter Roy Schneider has been performing with wife and partner, Kim Mayfield for a decade. The duo recently decided to name themselves Reckless Saints and have released an album of songs written by each, plus a cover of the late, great songwriter, Blaze Foley (subject of a new film by Ethan Hawke). Schneider once off-handedly dubbed his music as ‘Blue-Tangled Folk ’n’ Roll.
When not touring nationally, the duo perform regularly at various venues throughout Southwest Florida, where they live.
I emailed Roy a few questions as they were on the road to a gig in Ohio. •
ANDREW: How did you two meet, and when did you start performing together?
We met online, back when it was still awkward to admit that you met online. A mutual love of all kinds of music was a big part of the attraction, and we’d both played music since we were kids. When we met, I’d been writing songs, keeping them to myself while playing covers in the bars 4-6 nights a week. Kim played at home for the joy of it, and on our second date, we played music together for the first time.
Skipping ahead, Kim wanted to see me perform my songs for listening audiences, as I’d told her about my early attempts to play them in the bars: I’d get about 20 seconds in and when it was uniformly recognized as unfamiliar, someone would inevitably scream out the name of a cover song they would prefer to hear. So when work began to slow as summer approached (as it tends to do for entertainers in Southwest Florida), Kim got online and said “I’m going to plan us a working vacation.” The rest, as they say, is history. She booked me some gigs in coffee shops and bookstores, and we started touring. I was billed as a solo, Kim doing most of the legwork and sitting in on occasion. It wasn’t long before the sit-ins became whole sets, and we were a band of two.
What are some of the benefits and some of the pitfalls of performing with your husband/wife?
(Uh-oh, tricky terrain!) I think Kim and I would agree that it is definitely a challenge to be with another human 24/7. Nobody’s going away to the office, and when they do, you’re going, too. Fortunately, we love each other enough and have figured out who’s best at what to keep the ship lumbering slowly-but-surely forward. We have our moments; let’s say after a few weeks on the road, 6 inches apart for the third cruddy day in a row on the interstate, maybe the last gig wasn’t so good, nothing on the radio… Where’s the $%*# coffee in this town, anyway?! Yep, it has its challenges. We’ve made it work for 10 years, and we’re just getting started. So much music to make!
Who were some of your earliest influences, as a songwriter and as a musician, and why?
I began writing songs at 17, right after a safe landing at my saintly grandmother’s house, at the tail end of two stressful years as a runaway. As I began re-adjusting to society, many evenings were spent in front of the turntable, climbing deeply into the music of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby Stills & Nash, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Arlo Guthrie, Jim Croce… and on and on. It was the mid-1980s and I wasn’t finding a lot of nutrients in the popular music of the day, so I spent every dollar I could scrape up in used record stores. I was always attracted to writers and bands that had a good groove, great composition, solid musicianship — but the lyrics had to be good, too. If a song wasn’t about anything, if it didn’t at least attempt to tell a story or make any kind of a point, it seemed like a wasted opportunity.
Who are some of your most inspiring contemporaries, and why?
I’ve discovered and learned from loads of writers since getting serious about writing myself. At the top of that very long list would be Guy Clark, Greg Brown, Darrell Scott, and Malcolm Holcombe. In our time on the road and at Folk Alliance conferences, festivals like Kerrville (TX) and Falcon Ridge (NY), we have met and befriended so many incredible writers and musicians on the circuit today. The writers I find most inspiring tend to write songs that are honest and deal with real things, and are as clever, gritty or polished as they need to be in order to say what they need to say.
How long have you been working on this new album — writing and recording?
I picked up writing again after the release of Ten from the Pen in 2015, so technically three years or so. We started recording in early 2017, but since life happens and we were pulled away a lot, the songs didn’t start really taking shape and becoming an album until almost a year later. In the meantime, Kim had started writing some good stuff, so I started cutting titles I wasn’t yet 100% sure of to make room for at least a couple of hers as well. Once we’d knocked it all around and found the final album in this pile of half-recorded songs in the spring of 2018, it picked up steam, and life has been a real whirlwind since! It’s been an exciting year, and we hope the new album hits people in a really good way.
You cover Blaze Foley’s song, ‘Election Day’ on the album. What about Foley and this song in particular made you want to include it on the album?
I’d wanted to record a Blaze Foley song for years, and since I knew I was going to invite Gurf Morlix to play on it with us (Foley’s good friend
“The writers I find most inspiring tend to write songs that are honest and deal with re al things, and are as clever, gritty or p olished as they need to be in order to say what they need to say.”

and bandmate), I decided it couldn’t be one that he’d already recorded on his own tribute record to Blaze. ‘Election Day’ was always a favorite, and when I looked at the calendar, I thought maybe this will also help motivate me to make sure we actually get the record out before the election in November. Hey, we made it by 4 days!
Are you aware of Ethan Hawke's new film, Blaze, based on his life? Both the film and the soundtrack album have received laudatory reviews.
I was blown away when I turned on NPR in the car and they were interviewing Mr. Hawke about the movie. We had no idea this was happening, and had just started the publicity for the album! A total happy accident. We went to see the movie immediately, and right in the first few scenes, there was our friend Gurf on the screen (and the soundtrack)! The very same guy playing lead guitar on our version of “Election Day.”
You have the legendary Charlie McCoy (who has recorded with the likes of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and Patsy Cline) playing harmonica on one track (‘Walkin’ On a Wire’). How did that come about and what was it like seeing a master at work?
Charlie is such a great guy and I’m proud to say we’ve developed a solid friendship over the last decade. I played congas on a ‘duets’ album of his when we first met and have since played onstage with him, and drawn the covers of two of his CDs and a wonderful instructional DVD for country harp. He’s played on two previous solo albums of mine, and on a lot more songs! The only reason I didn’t ask him to do more on this one is I thought that, since I am the harmonica player in our group when we play onstage, I should probably start playing more harmonica on our records. But man, it is difficult to say ‘no’ when you have a man with Charlie’s talents and credentials willing to help out! We’re talking about doing a little EP project together at some point, a co-creation kind of thing.
How do you approach your songwriting — more as serendipity or as hard work?
Good question! I suppose both. It’s a joy when one comes along and you actually grab it, knowing it has potential. Once it starts to take shape, then it becomes hard work, much like I imagine a sculptor’s work. It’s getting it shaped just right, ironing this out, sanding a little over here, until it feels done. Then the initial joy returns as you can sing your song from start to finish! It’s done!
How do the songs differ from when you recorded them in the studio to how you perform them on the stage?
In the studio. I am able to be any or all members of the band, which is very handy. I love being able to put in the bass and drums I hear in my head! Kim was able to play ukulele on her song ‘Ring Around the Moon’ and then add some light piano. It’s a nice luxury. At the same time, I try to be careful not to be too busy on those tracks (easy
on the cymbals, no showboating on bass) so that when we are onstage as a duo the songs come through and we make up for those details in other ways. We stay busy onstage. I keep a heartbeat going on kick drum while playing acoustic or electric guitar, harmonica and vocals. The styles of playing I do on the guitar tend to cover bass, rhythm and lead, or any combination therein, depending on whether Kim is playing guitar, mandolin, ukulele or additional percussion. With all that and two voices we’ve been able to develop a pretty full sound for a band of two.
‘If I Die Tomorrow’ and ‘Poison Arrow’ are probably my favorite songs on the album. Can you talk about them — the melancholy in the lyrics and the beautiful harmonies?
‘Poison Arrow’ was written as a weary, melancholy commentary on the vast ugliness of the 2016 campaign season. Without getting party-specific or anything like that, all the song is meant to say is that whatever you put out there will eventually come back, or “what goes up must come down.”
find time to get back to it). I’ll try to be brief. In 1985 I was put into an institution called Straight, Inc. It was a horrible place that sold itself by manipulating the parents of unruly teenagers, under the guise of being a drug rehab. In short, it was a place most of us were tricked into entering and absolutely prevented from leaving.
We sat 12 hours a day in hard cafeteria type chairs, all locked together in rows. We sat up straight. We did not speak to each other or communicate in any way with the people next to and all around us for those entire 12 hours. If you must walk to the bathroom, a person higher up in the program will grasp the back of your pants, walk you in, stand over you and watch you do your business. I suppose that’s as much as I need to say here, but you get the picture. Oh, perhaps the biggest thing was no windows or doors to the outside, so we got no sunlight, ever. I was in there for a total of ten months, escaping twice. The second time, I decided that turning myself in had not gone the way I’d hoped, so I’d just keep running.
The song, ‘Angels Along the Road’ was written in retrospect, to thank a few key people with huge, generous hearts who fed, clothed, sheltered and advised me once I’d escaped and was out on my own.
What are your favorite guitars and why?
As for ‘If I Die Tomorrow,’ I was so pleased, because for years, Kim had wanted to write songs. I also wanted that, and for her to sing more lead vocals. One day I came up with the devious scheme of writing one with her voice and range in mind, asking her to sing it, and maybe that might help. As soon as I felt the song was musically, lyrically and structurally sound, I handed it off to her to put her thumbprint on it and she absolutely did. It’s pretty darn close to a co-write, as her tempo, vocal and guitar all shifted notably to fit her style. Once I got adjusted to the new delivery, I was able to find vocal harmonies and spaces for electric guitar leads, opening up a new horizon for us. Much as I enjoy being the front person, I love being a side man just as much! Within a few weeks, she’d written a few songs and I don’t mind saying I am a little jealous of the quality of her earliest works. Two of them made it onto the album.
Can you talk about the song, ‘Angels Along the Road’?
I could write a book about it (in fact, I am writing a book about it, the working title is Angels Along the Road, due out whenever the heck I can
Wow! Not a good question for a guitar guy trying to complete an interview in the van on what’s left of the laptop battery! I’ll keep it short. I’ve been a Martin guy forever, having dreamt and drooled for 15 years of playing before actually owning one. That was what most of my heroes played and I wanted to make that sound. My main guitar since 2010 has been a Martin 0M-28V with a K&K Pure Mini pickup system. More recently, Kim and I have both picked up RT Guitars, as the company owner, Bill Martin, lives right here in Fort Myers and had shown us his patented reverse-tension bridge design. They were clearly a great value, so we made an arrangement where he provided us each with a guitar and a lifetime maintenance/replacement plan, and we’d play them out on the road and tell people about them.
As for the funky electric hollow-body I play and get a lot of questions about… During the aforementioned runaway period, I somehow found myself at the home of my girlfriend’s friend’s brother. I think. What I remember clearly is that there was a sunburst guitar body in a pile of garbage that would be headed to the curb. The lower edge was broken, and it had no neck, bridge or tailpiece. I asked the guy if it was going to the garbage, could I have it? Thus began my 30-year restoration/recreation of the guitar, various hardware and pieces of wood representing various places and people along the way. In short, it’s a 1962 Silvertone curly maple archtop body, made by Harmony in Chicago. Pickups are original silver foils from DeArmond in Toledo. Neck turns out to be a Univox. Refinished, painted, inlaid. Glorious! •
The show is set up in a series of ‘games’ that the troupe plays with audience input. As soon as one is over, they move on to the next.
Improv This
by Julie ClayIT’S ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHTin Golden Gate City, a working class community located roughly 30 minutes east of downtown Naples, and we’re doing what the locals do, watching Stage 2 Improv bring down the house at the Golden Gate Community Center. This is only the second time they’ve performed here, but Judging by the roars of approval from the rather large audience, I think this show is here to stay.
We arrive early and are privy to their warmup exercises backstage, or rather, in a spare function room. The group stands in a circle clapping and chanting in unison, “Hey Fred Schneider, what are you doing?” We nod in approval of any reference to the iconic B-52’s singer as they take turns coming up with answers while keeping in rhythm. And the silliness has begun…
Theatre that relies on audience input as much as the talent of the performers onstage, improv has been around for centuries as a way of telling stories by acting them out. Modern improv owes much to a woman named Viola Spolin, who in the 1920s and 1930s developed a new approach of teaching acting to children through games. Her son, Paul Sills built on her work and was one of the driving forces of improv around the University of Chicago in the 1950s. His work eventually led to the formation of a company called Second City. You may have heard of them.
Mike Santos and his wife, Judith Gangi Santos are
Stage 2’s business owners and co-founders. He describes how Stage 2 started as an offshoot of another group they were involved with, Naples City Improv, in 2013 to generate income during the slower summer months. Five years later they’ve gained a following of their own. “We were able to convince them to have us do yearround once a month shows,” he shares, “Along with that, we were approached by the Studio Players, a completely different company, to do a show in July at Golden Gate Community Center. We performed a two-hour show for their normal patronage.”
Santos adds that although Stage 2 has performed throughout Southwest Florida, the Sugden Community Theatre is still their home base, which is handy considering Mike’s day job is as the Naples Players’ technical director. “We are called a ‘rental’ if you will,” he says, “They have their regular season of shows. Then, if there’s space available, they put us in.” Another plus is that improv is a low-cost venture.
“We are able to go anywhere, he says, “No set, no costumes, it’s just a plug n’ play kind of thing. We do music, but most of the time we don’t need amplification if it’s a small enough venue.” This particular evening, Stage 2 guitarist Gina Balducci has an electric plugged in, providing appropriate music to accentuate whatever was happening onstage at the moment.

troupe plays with audience input. As soon as one is over, they move on to the next.
Backstage before the show, Judith clarifies that the best way to approach doing improv is to make lists in your head of possible things to say as various categories come up. “The audience is trying to stump us and even if they don’t, they’re happy we figured out something to say. It’s a win-win,” she laughs, adding that it’s also a process of thinking in categories and as Mike shares, utilizing the philosophy of ‘yes, and…’.”
“It turns into whatever the situation, whatever the scene that we’re in, we have to accept it and add on to it,” he mentions, “I tell the players it’s a team sport. You’re there with at least another person. Its collaborative and its very out of the box thinking. We do a lot of mime work utilizing nothing and miming things to describe the situation and scenario.”
Although every show is different, some suggestions happen on a regular basis. For instance, when the audience is asked to name an animal, “aardvark” is a popular answer. Pointing out that it is both at the beginning of the alphabet and also a somewhat uncommon animal, Mike says they hear it all the time. And sure enough, there it was tonight!
The other seven Stage 2 members are Jim Corsica, Katie Cross, Casey Debrowski, Synthia
DuBose, Kat Ebaugh, Steve Johnson, Craig Price, Chris Rand, Adam Sant Fe, and Lucy Sundby. Everyone splits their passion with a day job (or two), however Craig is Education Director of Naples Players and a former member of Second City. Jim is a former member of Comedy Sportz, a Wisconsin-based improv group. Among the bunch there are yoga instructors, an English Lit teacher, a banking professional, and at presstime, a very pregnant Lucy, performing her last show prior to maternity leave. If you’ve ever pondered jumping into the improv ring yourself, Mike teaches a class at the Sugden Theatre, where he says he really pushes the ‘yes, and...’ philosophy. “I always tell my students that we improvise all day long and you don’t realize it. Everyone in this world improvises, but when people watch you, it gets more stressful and the stakes are higher
at that point,” he offers, “I would say just try it. It doesn’t take a good actor to be a good improvisor. You might be a good CEO and a good team player. There are a lot of applications for improv.”
Stage 2 is available for teambuilding, private functions and corporate events as well. Santos states, “There are literally hundreds of games that you can play that increase trust, creativity and teamwork. If a company isn’t doing well internally they hire someone like me to come and do teambuilding exercises.” He recalls the time when a local businessman attended his class with all six of his employees in tow. There’s really no failure here, as Mike relates the following advice: Just try it and even if it fails, try it again.
We knew Stage 2 had something great going on when my son remarked during the show that his cheeks hurt from smiling.
Intrigued? Catch Stage 2 at the Sugden Community Theatre in downtown Naples for a Family Night on December 1 and then on December 29 for their Block Party. They’ll be back at the Golden Gate Community Center for a Christmas show on December 22. •
“I always tell my students that we improvise all day long and you don’t realize it.”
It’s Friday night at Society, one of Fort Myers newest and most popular nightclub, restaurant and live music venues, located in the Bell Tower Shops. Patrons have the choice to remain downstairs, where they will find the latest in dance music, or the choice to work their way upstairs toward the live music. Tonight’s upstairs entertainment is the band, Soulixer. We have arrived a little on the late side, so the band is already in full swing and so is the crowd. They sway back and forth singing along to familiar lyrics from bands such as Kings of Leon, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Strokes. Soulixer is on fire tonight, as usual.
A three member operation, formed by high school friends and based out of Cape Coral, these young musicians have the tenacity and talent of a group twice their age and reputation. It’s hard to believe that such a huge sound comes from such a small group, but they pull it off with a punch. You would be hard pressed to find anyone on the floor not dancing or cheering them on. You can tell these guys have a close bond and truly enjoy what it is they do. The energy is electric.
The night’s performance was a celebration in honor of the group’s new EP release titled, Specters & Spaceships. It is the band’s third release, not including an additional single.
After a couple hours, it seems quite clear to me, although the show
may now be over, the entertaining is not. The guys step off stage and into the sea of fans who pull them in all directions vying for their attention. I bust past the crowd, and am lucky that the drummer is still behind his set. I introduce myself and let him know I’ll be waiting downstairs to interview them once the mania has died down and they can finally pull themselves away.
For a trio of 20-something’s they have already been working for years. Soulixer includes Mason Reinek (bass), Thomas O’brien (guitar and vocals) and Cayce Dillard (drums). Their Facebook page describes their sound as indie rock, funk and soul, but their music can’t be so easily constrained.
Cayce, Thomas and Mason got their start while still teenagers, way too young to be allowed into many of the establishments in which they played. For years Mason’s father would chaperone the group, making sure they weren’t up to deviant antics or drinking. Although he worked a grueling schedule, he would make sure they had ample opportunity to play and grow their sound. Thomas reminisces about a time when he had been grounded, but to his chagrin his own father had refused to let him participate in an interview due to his punishment. Unfortunately, like all teenagers, he found a way around his father’s wishes (his dad had left town) and still went. Now as adults the group says if not for sticking it out and the support of their families, they wouldn’t be where they are today. Mason says “My father’s probably our biggest fan, but we’ve got tons of really amazing support, and excellent, genuine fans. It’s been great.”
I inquired about who, aside from supportive fans and family, has influenced the groups musical antics. Cayce Dillard declares the band to be huge Red Hot Chili Pepper fans, saying they may just be the best band in the world. “We don’t try to emulate them, but we do idolize them a little bit.” The Chili Peppers Influence may also be heard in the bass playing of Mason Reinek. “To see a bass player with so much confidence, not only in himself, but having band members that have so much confidence in him that he can just go nuts, and they know the show’s going to be better for it, is just so inspiring for me” says Mason.
Although united in their love for the Chili Peppers, Thomas says what he actually really appreciates about being in Solixer is how they all come from different musical backgrounds. He believes that having a variety of unique interests has helped them create a sound that not a lot of people are currently pursuing. He explains, “We come from three different angles. I like singer-songwriter lovey-dovey stuff, Mason loves funk, and Cayce loves a lot of post-punk rock. But when we come together we create this weird but cohesive sound.” Mason adds that Solixer puts a focus on adapting the cover songs they play to their own sound so that shows tend to ‘synch and flow’ as original songs are added to the set list.
I asked the members of Solixer to name a few of their favorite original songs. Thomas says, “For me, emotional songs like ‘4568,’ or ‘Libra.’ which is off our new EP.” “I like playing songs like ‘Close Enough’ and ‘Kayla,’ because they’re pretty hyped and people want to move a little bit,” says Mason. ‘Close Enough’ is also a favorite of Cayce’s, but he explains the band is always writing, so he anticipates that will morph as new songs are introduced to the set list.
I asked what songs out of their original work get the biggest crowd reaction? “‘Kayla’ for sure” says Thomas. The popularity of this song by audience members influenced Solixer to release a music video about two years ago. Mason agrees with the popularity ‘Kayla’ seems to have.
I asked about where the band gets their ideas for their original songs? Mason says much of it comes from life experience. “To be honest, Thomas writes a lot of the lyrics, melodies and chords.” Thomas also sites life experience as being a major influence. “A lot is taken from personal experience, like love. I love love. I love feeling love,” adding, “I love writing about heartbreak. It just feels good to let that out. It’s liberating.”
I asked if they would say their relationship with each other depicted any of the outcome for their sound and musical choices. Mason says it absolutely does, “If you see us live, you can see we’re not faking our emotions when playing. We’re actually feeling them together. We have trust in each other. We’re best friends. It’s just easy.” Thomas adds that as time has gone by he is realizing lyrics can be subjective. “I find the meaning in my lyrics change constantly depending on the day. It will always change. Like with the lyrics I’m writing now.” Adding, “I don’t know where I’m going to be in a year or two from now.”
Cayce then tells Thomas, “You told me once that you write lyrics, then a couple
months later you’ll realize, ‘Oh that’s what I meant,’ and now I can see how that totally makes sense.”
Watching the band play together makes it obvious they have the experience to read their crowd. “We build our show with audiences, making sure we’re not over aggressive or not aggressive enough. We try to maintain a good plateau,” Thomas explains. “We like to improvise every time we solo, or have a break down. We try to ask ourselves what we can do differently to set this show apart from the last.
Mason agrees, adding, “It’s like being a stand up comedian. Sometimes the comedian may say something he himself doesn’t quite find that particularly funny, but once he sees the crowd reaction, he picks it apart and asks himself what did the audience find funny about that, then tries to work that into his set for next time.”
Thomas sites energy as being an important factor. “Energy is so important. Maintaining a high energy or low energy, depending on the crowd, and what they want that night. Some crowds want to rock out all night, but some just want to chill out, eat pasta, have a glass of wine, and relax. We have to be able to read the crowd every night, and it’s always different.”
What does Solixer think the audience is looking for when they come to see them play? Mason says it may be about the connection, “Our goal is to be as listenable as possible while still staying true to writing songs we care about. We’re not only trying to write songs people like, but songs people can connect with, and we also want to connect with the people themselves.” He adds, “When they come up to me, and they tell me that something about what I played in this song made them feel a certain way, and I’m like, I know because I feel that way too. That’s what I think its all about. The fact that a random person can hear a song, a song that also resonates with us, hear something in that song and have it in turn resonate with them. It creates a bonding moment, it makes them feel, ‘I’m a part of this’.”
Thomas sites the band’s college days back in Boston at the Berklee College of Music where all three spent time. He says, “We lived in Boston for a couple of years and there were a lot of amazing musicians, but we tried separating ourselves because it seemed like everyone just wanted to play for other musicians, nobody wanted to play for the average person. We want to play for the everyday person. That’s what matters, man.”
Does Solixer ever envision adding
musicians to the group? According to Thomas, of course they have. “Our big thing is we pride ourselves on being a brother band. We really care about each other more than anything. Music is one aspect of it, but fidelity is everything, he explains. “We’re open to finding another musician, but it has to click in a certain way, like how this clicks, and this is a hard thing to find, man.”
Mason adds that if they ultimately get to the level they want, with larger audiences on bigger stages, there would be parts where having an additional guitarist would be vital. He also says having a horn section would fit perfectly into many of the melodies as well. “Ultimately, one day, if we want to achieve the massive scale that we want, there would be more musicians, but for now, for us to add another band member they would have to be like our brother.”
In the meantime, the band is out playing almost everywhere they can. Mason says, “Tonight we had our EP release party at Society at Bell Tower Shops. We play there a lot. We play a lot in general in downtown Fort Myers , at City Tavern, Soho, Sky Bar, Fort Myers Brewing Company, Space 39. We play all over the place. We also get over to Miami a little bit.” They have an upcoming gig opening for J.J. Grey & Mofro in Key West.
I asked the group to tell me a little bit about how their EP ‘Specters and Spaceships’ came about. Cayce says, “It’s the best project we’ve ever put together. We went in the studio with eight songs. We knew we would probably record four or five. We recorded two that we planned on, two we wrote in the studio that you had in the back of your head (pointing to Thomas), and another one we recorded just because we wanted to tweak a little bit of something.”
“We recorded with Greg Archilla, who is a fantastic producer. We could not be more thankful to have worked with him,” says Mason. He adds, “We just released a brand new music video for ‘Close Enough.’ You can find it on our YouTube. We post most everything on Facebook and Instagram, those are really our main outlets."
I asked about the significance of the tattoo Mason has on his wrist. He says, “I’ve always been drawn to the Yin and Yang, I’m also a huge fan of the Kung Fu.” Casey adds, “He’s the biggest Bruce Lee fan that has ever lived.” This symbol is called the World Triad. It stands for nature, reality and time —and there’s three of us. I think it’s really good to think about and apply to our music and lifestyle. •

“We call our theater, the TheaterLab and I think that’s a very apt name because it is a laboratory for both education and for quality theater experiences.“
Laboratory of Experiences
by John LoscuitoFLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY has a new Theater Program Coordinator. Dan Bacalzo, who is now in his fourth year teaching at FGCU, previously worked in New York City as a critic and editor for TheaterMania.com, with his practical theaterwork including a stint as Artistic Director of Peeling, an Asian-American writing and performance ensemble. “My theater background comes out of community-based performance,” he states. “But my range of theater andwhat I love comes from my journalism years, because I wound up seeing a whole lot of theaterfrom all sorts of genres and levels, from professional to amateur.”
I spoke with Dan about FGCU Theater’s upcoming season.
•
JOHN LOSCUITO: What was different about the FGCU campus and the community of Southwest Florida that brought you here?
DAN BACALZO: Part of it was personal. I have family that lives in the area and that was an important thing to me, to move somewhere close to my family. But I also found that I loved the area itself. The Southwest Florida area does offer a lot of opportunities because I think that the audience here hasn’t necessarily been exposed to the range of theatrical experiences that I have seen in New York. And it’s kind of fun to think about new ways to engage Southwest Florida audiences with different kinds of theatrical experiences.
Some of those new ways are being explored at the FGCU Theater. What makes FGCU theater unique in those explorations?
We are, as we call our theater, the TheaterLab and I think that’s a very apt name because it is a laboratory for both education and for quality theater experiences. And so it’s exploratory in nature. I think we do a lot of different things to help our students really have a range of both opportunities and challenges. You can see that from past experiences that we’ve done such as bringing in an Artist-in-Residence named Tim Miller to work with creating a devised performance with our students. Last year we worked with a playwright to premiere an original play. This year we started out our theater season with a professional collaboration with TheatreZone, which is a professional theater down in Naples that specializes in musicals. We’re producing Urinetown, which is a musical satire. But I don’t think it’s limited to just those kinds of professional collaborations. I think it’s also to do with our choices in what we actually present.
Speak a little bit about that range of content that the season provides and how you go about making those choices of content throughout the season.
We look at our productions as opportunities for our students. We want our students versed in a range of styles and genres so that they’re not just learning one way to do things. We try to mix it up a bit and give them opportunities to do different kinds of plays and this year is actually a really good indication of that. We start out with the musical satire then our next show, Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells, is a children’s theater production. Then we’ve got an expressionist drama from the 1920s and then we conclude our season with a play from the Spanish Golden Age of Theater. So it’s really a wide range of theatrical genres and I think they’re all fantastic opportunities for our students.
It sounds like Junie B. is going to bring in a different audience to FGCU. What else is special about that production.
There are a lot of different ways that Junie B. is unique in our season. It is part of a class, so our students are actually working throughout the semester on the acting, the design and the technical elements of the production. But when we actually do premiere it, we’re doing one weekend here at the FGCU campus and the following weekend we’re doing a series of free performances at the Gulf Coast Town Center. In addition, there will be a presentation at the Golisano Children’s Hospital interacting with the patients there, which I think is a fantastic way to really engage with the community.
What are you
personally looking forward to this season?
I will admit that I’m looking forward to directing my first full length play at Florida Gulf Coast University, which is Machinal, Sophie Treadwell’s 1920s expressionist drama that we’re presenting in February. I have loved the play for a number of years. I teach it in my theater history class and it’s really great when you consider it in this day and age. So even though 1920s America is very different from 2019, there are a lot of similar concerns that come up, the most important one being the kind of roles women have been forced into and expected to meet within the constraints of society.
I think that we are still facing a lot of that today in terms of how much women experience the full range of freedoms that they are entitled to. Things like the
“My range of theater andwhat I love comes from my journalism years, because I wound up seeing a whole lot of theaterfrom all sorts of genres and levels, from professional to amateur.”
Me Too movement have exposed the underlying sexism that has helped build the foundation for so many careers of men. We then look back to this 1920s drama written by a woman and see how she was really concerned with how the constraints of her time was really limiting what women could do and also the price women paid when they tried to go outside of those bounds.
Given the fact that you’re doing children’s theater, classical Spanish drama and tough plays dealing with contemporary issues, who do you think your audience is that can engage on these different levels?
I would like to think that our audience is one that is exploratory, one that can take this really wide range of experiences and think of it as something that is actually integrated. Since we are at a university, some of the people that come to our productions are going to be university students. And university students, immersed here at FGCU in a liberal arts education model, mirror the educational experiences that we’re teaching here, so that they’re not just looking at one discipline such as theater, history or philosophy but all sorts of experiences. One thing I tell my students all the time is that to be a successful theater professional, you have to know a little bit about every field because you
might wind up designing a play that requires something from one discipline or you’re looking at a historical era that needs knowledge of a particular time period.
So we can’t just be limited, only thinking about actor training or technical training. We have to expand our ways of thinking so that it encompasses more than just our own particular discipline.
When theater patrons find their way to FGCU, what might they find different than some of the other theaters around town?
I think all of our patrons, whether they are students or they come from the outside community, can come to FGCU theater and see plays that perhaps they’re not going to experience at some of the other theaters in the Southwest Florida area. And part of that is our mission to really provide the kind of experiences for students so that we’re not just
doing one kind of play or even one kind of experience.
I mean one of the things that we’re doing this year is Life is a Dream, which is a play from the Spanish Golden Age. It’s a classical theater play, but a lot of the time when people think about classical theater they think about the Greeks, they think about Shakespeare, but they don’t necessarily think about Spain. And I think something that we offer is the opportunity for our audience to sort of see things that they might not see elsewhere. Because we are a laboratory we experiment with a lot of different things and it’s not going to appeal to every single person every single time. If you don’t necessarily like one production that doesn’t mean you’re not going to like the next one.
I think that if we can provide our audiences with different experiences, then we’ll find the kind of exploratory audience that we want and that perhaps will enrich the whole theatrical scene. •
“We want our students versed in a range of styles and genres so that they’re not just learning one way to do things.”
