Renovation of the Steel Factory
Renovation of the Commercial Plaza

Regeneration of Durban, South Africa
Cultural & Musical Center in Floyd
A Public Art School in an industrial City
A steel factory The site is located at Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology Huaqing College, which used to be the area of Shaanxi Steel Factory founded in 1965. The university has renovated and reused parts of the old construction of factories in the area in 2002. The site is going to be reused in the future. The school utilizes steel factories as libraries, teaching complexes, canteens and so forth. I prefer to renovate the site as a greenhouse for new members, Landscape
Architecture students, and faculty in this university. Also, the new greenhouse will keep old memories of it by allowing retired workers to take walks in it. As a result, it will be well remembered by new members. Through the rehabilitation, the old deserted factory has gained a new definition by contributing a new value.

A greenhouse A greenhouse, with multiple and flexible spaces, tries to construct a new space for students and faculties in the Department of Landscape & Architecture and to organize academic activities at the same time. Residents, as well as retired workers, may recall their memories in the newly renovated factory.

People can take a walk on the ground path in the renewed factory, recalling their memories at that glorious time in the Steel Factory.
People can walk on the elevated path to have a view from above. Also, they can enter working boxes by it.
Students can do some trials with plants on various landscape design.
People can envision the historical scene from the reserved traverser.
People can take a walk on the ground path in the renewed factory, viewing the various plants and entering to the communication boxes.

The underground commercial plaza The site is located on the axis of Xi’an City, China, which indicates that the role of the site is extremely significant for the city. Commercial buildings are gradually constructed along the axis. Thus the site is used to be an underground commercial plaza. Now, it almost closed because of the unclear aim and the inappropriate space design. Only a cinema and a few shops survive in the square, the overground part, however, is more energetic with people
doing exercises and resting under trees. The site is a commercial space but also plays a crucial role in public space.
2. Recreate a Park Renovation of the Commercial Plaza

The commercial green park Commercial buildings near the site will be the highest one till 2020, which means the importance of site will be enhanced. Also, the site which is a underground plaza is more precious for the whole city because the aboveground part of plaza can be used as a green space. The site can be defined as a commercial plaza with a large track of green space.

A sand viewing tower When I first visited Qingdao, I had an enjoyable time playing with sand on the coast. It is an incredibly unforgettable time, so I decided to construct a building on the shore: like sand viewing tower on the beach, standing there with the specific facade and free-flowing floor.
It comes from my memory, and it will continue to create different memories for other people when they are inside the sand viewing tower. People can sit on the flowing ground, lie on the comfortable ground, and view the distant landscape.

The tide and the viewing tower During the tide period, the people can stay on the 2nd floor and view the scenery of the tide. Also, people can go fishing during the tide period. During the ebb tide period, some of the sea water will stay in the rugged coast which is the most fun part of playing near the sea. Also, people can view the scenery of the ebb tide on the 2nd floor and 3rd floor.

Warwick Area, Durban, South Africa Durban’s morphology is marred by a condition of fragmentation. The city was segregated by the railway spatially, the inner city and the outer city were floating apart from each other, like two big floating ice islands on the ocean. Those activities within two areas of Durban city were gathering to its own kernel, which broadens the chasm between the inner city and the outer city. The Warwick Area, the site we were pointed to intervene, is located over this chasm and includes both edges of the inner city and outer city, which means the Warwick Area carries all
the functions of both sides. Almost half a million users, from street traders to commuters, pass through Warwick Junction every day. The Warwick Junction became a fragile “linkage” between two parts of Durban city. They define this place as a “place of collide”. We are trying to transform this “place of collide” to a “place of connection”.

Boxes in a box The site is Located in the center of Floyd which is a highly small town but has a long history of country music. The buildings in Floyd just like boxes standing along the street. I would like to make another box for Cultural and Musical Center with a huge concrete musical box in it. Along the envelope of the musical box, a continuous ramp is built to create an exhibition space on the outside of the musical box. The wall of the music box is 2 feet The musical box is
without the roof so that visitors can view exhibits and appreciate music at the same time. The functional boxes, like fire stair boxes, an elevator box, light & ventilation boxes and a restroom box, are plugged into the continuous ramp as a structural system.

The light and ventilation boxes Light & Ventilation boxes are plugged into the floors and with a plant at the bottom of these boxes. They are without top level to allow rain inside to watering plants. When it is raining outside, the ventilation function cannot work. When it is cloudless outside, a window on one face of light & ventilation boxes stays open for ventilation.

An industrial city Roanoke and a public art school Roanoke is an industrial city which has a large numbers of railroads, factories, and other industrial constructions. After the industrial period, these industrial constructions have been preserved but the city is depressed. Artists and the government began to renew the city by using public arts like murals, sculptures, and new constructions. The Taubman Museum of Art is one of the new constructions to renovate the city. It has a great deal of indoor collections.
The site is at the center of Roanoke and it is next to the Taubman Museum of Art, which has an opportunity to be as an outdoor exhibition for the city Roanoke. If there is a public art school on the site, a number of public arts will come into being. Since there was a mural on one of the wall on the site, it can be a beginning for a public art school. The public art school will be built on the site, becoming an exhibition for Roanoke.
6. Renew Roanoke A Public Art School in an Industrial City
8 weeks, first-year of graduate school, individual work, 2017
The public art school The public art school is located in the center of Roanoke, next to the Taubman Museum of Art. In order to in honor of the industrial time, the materials of the public art school will be sorts of industrial materials like steel, wood, and masonry. Thus, the school is consist of numbers of different constructions by using various materials. The studio space is a yellow masonry construction. The wood shop is made of red steel shelter. The office is a gray steel construction. The auditorium is a wood addition to the construction underneath. The cafe utilizes dark gray steel as an addition. The store is located on the roof of the street store, using steel construction. All the parts are connected by bridge trusses, which are widely used during industrial time in Roanoke. Because most of the constructions are elevated, the ground space can be used as an outdoor exhibition. Students contribute structures, murals, and installments to the outdoor exhibition. In this way, the outdoor exhibition created by the public art school will gradually renew Roanoke.

The public art school The public art school is a renewal for Roanoke and the site itself at the same time. The walls from surroundings will be used as an exhibition for murals. Each building contains various materials so that the public art school becomes an outdoor of industrial materials exhibition. Each building is like an art work contributing to the outdoor exhibition. The connections among buildings work not only for the students but also for residents in Roanoke. The public art school plays a key role to the walking system in Roanoke.

The House: to be accompanied and to be alone The house is a portrayal of life. Life is to be accompanied and to be alone.
series of experiencing spaces underneath, starts from the third space. He will travel spaces containing different lights, sounds, and views. The owner can stop by during the journey to experience the spaces. He will gradually forget sadness and sorrow by the pleasure created by various experience. The owner will hear echoes when he sings in the spaces and will notice the sound of his footsteps and will view different scenes from various light tubes. Finally, the owner will reach his destination.
I grew up in a typical three members family in China. Thanks to the strict one-child restriction, we have to be alone sometimes, at least I have to. When I was a child, I created a space in our apartment, where I can have a lovely time all by myself. I acted like a bus driver, a ticket seller, and customers at the same time. I made props for my play. I drew tickets on different colored paper with different prices; I named every stop with my favorite places. Two Chinese stools created a scene for my play. It is my favorite part when I am alone. That place makes me feel safe and joyful. It is the place accompanied me during my summer and winter, helped me to learn how to be alone since I was a child. When I grew up, I went to schools and learned how to accompany with friends, classmates, and so forth. I felt the joy, but it’s different from the one I think when I am alone. I find out that there still should be a place to be alone, where I can do daydreaming, reading, and singing. Thus, I designed The House. It is the house that has spaces above ground and spaces beneath the ground. The part above ground is separated into three volumes. The first space is for the owner to be with friends and family members, which is a significant part of one’s life. The second space is the owner staying with close friends where they can work and design together. The third space is only for the owner where he can sleep, read and relax. Sometimes, the owner feels depressed, and he prefers to run away from sadness like a child. Thus, I design a series of spaces for the owner to get away like a child. He can take a journey to get rid of sorrow by going through the underground spaces. The journey of the owner, created by a

Hanbury Summer Scholar Program 2018 The project was my first experience in advertising for an architectural firm. The graphic I made is for Hanbury Summer Scholar Program 2018. It is a GIF image with a car moving towards the Apply board. It has been used on the official website and official accounts. The idea comes from the projects the firm designed, which are high education architectures and master plannings. Also, renovation projects are a significant part of Hanbury. Based on the firm logo, I created the construction scene with scaffolding for the firm to attract more talented students to apply for the summer scholar program in 2018.
