STUDENT FINE ART EXHIBIT
The final exhibition of the year at Ganzo, the creative learning lab of Florence University of the Arts, is dedicated to a reflection on “The Force of Words”, the theme around which all of this semester’s final student events are centered. In this exhibit, students analyze the force of words in visual communication, through artwork and text, uncovering the “power” of words in all its different aspects and fields: fine art, communication, politics, journalism, literature, life. Through the use of various mediums in the making of “conceptual art” projects, the students in FUA’s School of Fine Arts explore the way that media shocks or even merely communicates different meanings and feelings. Following different paths and interpreting the theme in their own way, each course contributed to the final result of a unique collection of visual interpretations of “The Force of Words”. Students from the following courses participated in this exhibit: Ceramics, Florence Sketchbook, Foundation Drawing, Mixed Media, Watercolor and Tempera Techniques, and Words, Painting and Emotions. Le opere sono state selezionate dagli studenti della Florence University of the Arts (FUA) per lo spazio di Ganzo, ristorante e laboratorio didattico della stessa università.

GAETANO CUNSOLO Ceramics The writing space collides with the gesture space. It is a gesture that is not so much part of an uncontrolled motion, but of the need to expand writing and narrative, bringing it in dialogue with the space and to an understanding of it through the sign. In this way the students have worked by reducing the infinite levels of understanding of writing, translating its meaning in shape and opening its lines to the three-dimensional space in some cases. They have used ceramics like white paper, highlighting the close connection existing between the twodimensional space and three-dimensional space, between language and form, between meaning and significance. They played with clay plates as if they were sheets of paper and they have developed a personal idea of understanding the physical space of the artwork. The works in the exhibition consistently delineate the attempt of the students to overcome barriers of ceramics intended as handmade product, aiming for a development of the form and language free from a precise function.

ALESSANDRA RAGIONIERI Florence Sketchbook ORIANA FALLACI: THE FORCE OF WORDS in the sketchbook class. The sketchbook is a source of ideas; an intimate place. The objective of Florence sketchbook is to record not only images but rather a symbiosis of images, phrases, ideas, key words as well as examples from many artists’ sketchbooks. From Dada to Pop Art to Tattoo art, the interaction of words and images denounces, publicises and incises in a tribal way contemporary skin types, by upsetting their traditional meanings. Oriana Fallaci and her powerful writings are perfectly fitting for this theme. Some students are impressed by her Islamophobia or by specific episodes of her life related to the student’s country and the actuality of our world. The basic idea of the project behind“The Force of Words”: to esthetically and meaningfully combine WORDS AND IMAGES using graphic techniques covered during the course.

ANDI NUFER Foundation Drawing By zooming in, looking up close, and slowing down, we open our eyes to the ordinary, everyday, and approach it like an unexamined assumption, something to question and discover. Echoing the tradition of the critical journalistic practice of Fallaci, our process of examining the micro becomes the macro, the detail becomes the monument, and we practice the art of transforming the thing taken-for-granted into the thing re-seen, re-viewed, as if for the first time, practicing, as Vasari implored, to “Look and know how to see”. Forms become words, assembled, composed, into a whole, a dramatic story. The accompanying 14 individual titles of the works are meant, like the images, to be read as one string of words, become one assembled phrase or sketch of a sentence or thought, like shorthand notes scribbled down while uncovering a news story. These works are an invitation to find and recognize the potential beauty and the extraordinary in the thing assumed to be ordinary. PARIDE MORETTI Mixed Media We read text all the time and have become very accustomed to focusing on the content or message of the words themselves and not what the words look like visually. In professional graphic design, visual language refers to the meanings created by the visual appearance of both text and image, Verbal language is the literal meaning of words, phrases and sentences: “These two distinct areas often come together in practice as there is clearly a very strong relationship between the conception of the words as a message and their transmission in visible form.

ANDREA MANCINI Watercolor and Tempera Techniques Throughout my artistic teaching experience I usually see two different attitudes in the aspiring artists discovering Florence. The first and most common is a general disenchantment with all that has been before “digested” through the media, on social networks, or generally already “planned” before the real encounter. The other - much more rare - is amazement. A reaction of genuine surprise in which only some and for me very privileged people go wild, without prejudice, in front of the enchanting views offered to every corner of our city. Just “surprised” by Florence’s beauty. Hannah, 22 years old American of Speedway, Indiana, is one of them.

NICOLETTA SALOMON Words, Painting and Emotions: The Mind Map of Creativity The force of written words is showcased as soon as their visual power is exploited. The etymology of “writing” has a connection to the gestures of tearing and scratching: not just leaving a sing, but marking an aggressive sing, a sign that is able to mark a wound. Being extensively exposed to the visual work of Basquiat and Cy Twombly, the Words, Painting and Emotion class carried researches on the multiple ways that allow the written/painted word to become a visual subject. Openly aggressive emotions as well as poetic and intimate feelings and thoughtful reflections are then expressed onto paper and canvas thanks to a complex intertwining of writing and painting. In some pieces the message would be apparent, some other will retain their mysterious allusion to an unspoken, even silent communication. All of them keep as a treasure the original ancient Greek connection between writing and drawing as shown in the root “graph”, where the hand of both the writer and artist are co-working.
