STUDENT EXHIBIT FALL 2017
FLORENCE UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS DIVA SCHOOL OF DIGITAL IMAGING AND VISUAL ARTS
On September 21 from 6 pm to 9 pm at CORRIDOIO FIORENTINO, the student gallery of the Department of Photography of Florence University of the Arts (FUA), will open the exhibition FLORENCE BETWEEN SKY AND EARTH.
Day after day, Florence displays itself to a vast number of visitors projecting a picturesque but numbed image of the city. The students in the fall 2017 intermediate level landscape and architecture photography class, taught by professor Gualtieri, have challenged the cliché of the beautiful renaissance city, exploring unusual point of views. The viewers will engage in a visual journey that will develop from surreal reflections to vertiginous sights. Marco Gualtieri is a landscape photographer based in Florence, Italy. He has a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from DAMS (Drama, Art, and Music Studies) University of Bologna, Italy; a Bachelor’s degree in Cinematography from the National Film School of Rome; a certificate in Documentary and Photojournalism from the International Center of Photography of New York. His work has been exhibited in the United States, where he has lived and worked for the past decade. Marco is currently based in Florence and works as a photography instructor at Florence University of the Arts. CORRIDOIO FIORENTINO
Corridoio Fiorentino is the student design and photography gallery that also exhibits external photographers and FUA faculty. The gallery is located at DIVA, which is the digital imaging and visual arts division of FUA. It was created to integrate students in the local culture of Florence. Corridoio Fiorentino is a CEMI (Community Engagement Member Institutions), which include FLY, the fashion store, Fedora, a pastry shop on via Guelfa, and Ganzo, a restaurant and art gallery on Via de’ Macci. CEMI projects also include a campus, a center for cultural and Italian studies, and greenmapped service learning. The students and faculty of FUA operate all CEMI through academic coursework.

SKY AND EARTH FLORENCE BETWEEN
CORRIDOIO FIORENTINO
Corridoio Fiorentino, all’interno della School of Digital Imaging and Visual Arts della FUA, è una delle sedi CEMI (Community Engagement Member Institutions) che fanno parte della Fondazione Palazzi ed è il nuovo spazio espositivo per le opere fotografiche e di design di artisti esterni, studenti e professori della Florence University of the Arts.

Shape City When looking around the city of Florence, it is important to notice the little things – the parts of the scene that people may or may not pay attention to. This may include the contrast of textures, colors, and how they interact with the people passing by. When I walk through a city, I always notice how the sunlight falls on the streets and buildings, creating patterns and shapes. Likewise, I notice the shapes in the sky on a dull, cloudy day. The city becomes an artistic form. Seeing Florence in this scope allows you to see these kinds of architecture and landscapes in a new way, skewing the typical view of what you may just pass by when you walk down the street. It is very important to me to always aim for something out of the ordinary, and something that is not typical of the scene, whether it be odd angles or abstraction. When people think of Florence, they may think of the cobblestone paths, the iconic buildings, and the crowded streets, but I wanted to present a different view, bringing out the mystery, magic, and vibrance of the city.

Mirrored Florence is the picturesque city of any tourist's dreams. I have been a repeat visitor to Florence and since I began living here I started to encounter the authentic Florence. I wanted to create a unique view of Florence, in an entirely different light. During our first few weeks in Florence we were granted a rare chance to see storms, which, I have heard never visit Tuscany. This Florence is more complex than the picture perfect “Tuscan Summer,” it’s a place that has trash on the streets, and the smell of tobacco mixed with the smell of fresh food mingling together in the air. Florence is still a beautiful, postcard, city. But the Florence that you can find if you look hard enough in the puddles, cracked cobble stones, and stormy skies. This is the Florence that I call home.
