FEAR LOVE HANGER HAPPINESS

INTRODUCTION During my 4th year as an instructor at FUA, having 4 students in the class I decided to explore a new way of teaching. This has been done by requesting the students to collaborate on 4 videos based on 4 feelings: FEAR, LOVE, ANGER, HAPPINESS. Using four sentiments helped us to keep focus on a shared feeling: each of us knows what fear, love, anger and happiness feel like but together we all have our own point of view. Projects are based on the four feelings as a core for their scripts, screenplay and storyboards. Each student has simultaneously been a director in his own project and part of the crew in the other ones. Exploring the procedures to move deeply in a real video production, the students have been part of a team where they have covered the main positions, including: - screenwriter and director - assistant / audio operator - director of photography / camera operator - actress or actor These four projects have been produced within FUA’s buildings and spaces such as classrooms, corridors and the print-lab. During the first week, students worked on the pre-production phase, developing a screenplay based on the chosen feeling. They were then assigned to a role for each project. In the 2nd week, all of them were engaged in shooting the necessary scenes. At the end, the post-production phase was used to finalize the editing, audio mixing and coloring. These projects were thought to be showcased primarily during the Final Exhibition in the Corridoio Fiorentino. The final length for all of them is 60”. The film will be uploaded on FUA’s Instagram account. Juri Ciani

"OUT OF WATER" Whether one’s producing a funny or scary video, to make people feel these emotions properly is not an easy task. I personally like scary movies, ghost stories and other movies in these genres so I enjoyed working on this project. I hope, without being “mean,” that it does produce some feelings of fear in the viewer. While doing the storyboard the video was constantly morphing for many different reasons, and it took me a couple days to get used to it. To get the right set up I had to start with the very defi nition of Fear which is “what we feel when we perceive danger or threat.” So I put my character in a place where, at some point, he was not sure whether he was alone or not. School itself is not a scary place until you put some creepy, unusual noises that break the promise of everything being ok. Nightmares, no matter how short or endless they are, can give us an awful unsafe feeling and confusion of what just happened - “Felt almost real…It was really vivid” - besides, how odd it can be to fi nd someone looking at you in a dark-empty room. I thought: waking up from it after just a couple of seconds, out of breath, is something almost anyone can relate to.

“L_O_V_E” I chose love because I wanted to have a fun and light subject matter. In most videos and movies I see love as heartbreaking or life changing. Here I wanted to have something that pokes fun at the traditional concept of love at fi rst sight. With this 60-second video I wanted to make a parody of two people in love. As I said before, I wanted something light and funny instead of something sappy and romantic. The video is intended to change very quickly, and to surprise you. The video has two sides, the girl’s perspective vs boy’s perspective (with corresponding music for each). With the use of only music, I hoped to portray the different types of love seen in the video (Utopic Love & Infatuated Love). The two types of music differ drastically. One refers to a typical first love story, while the other is a typical example of a passionate love story. The project was challenging for me in many ways. We were only allowed to use the space in DIVA, and the students in our class. These requirements really pushed my creativity. Acting, writing, and directing in my own video was something new for me, but at the same time incredibly eye-opening. Because of this process, I have a better comprehension on how much goes into making a movie, thanks to a 60-second clip. This process and the planning involved for this project was interesting to say the least. Videomaking is not my biggest strength, however this project truly pushed me to think differently. The production of these four fi lms gave me valuable skills that I will defi nitely take with me later in my future endeavours. My goal was to create a quick, lighthearted look on love, and I hope that this comes through when you view my work.

“NOT SO ORDINARY TRACK” Our Professor told us that our fi nal project should be based on four feelings - love, happiness, anger and fear. From those feelings we need to choose one, and I chose happiness. It was diffi cult for me to think of an ideal topic so I decided on myself; from my own experiences. Since I’m in a country where my native language is not being used, I came up with a topic about “language barrier.” From that negative word, I want to build a positive feeling which is happiness but the question is “How am I going to show that?” My fi rst idea was about joy and happiness from two different people from a different country that has different language. Sadly, it didn’t work because I had a hard time writing the script and we only had a few days to think about it and regardless of the time constraint, it was a diffi cult task to fulfi ll. Therefore, I needed to come up with another idea that still focused on the language barrier somehow. So I ended up with the story about a girl who loves Asian music. She feels lively and happy every time she listens to it even if she can’t understand it. Because for her happiness has no boundaries even if it’s something that is unusual.

“ANGER” For Advanced Videomaking and Post-Production, Juri assigned each of the four students to take on an emotion and produce a 60-second fi lm. Of the four: love, happiness, anger, and fear, I decided to choose anger. In modern-day time a connection to the online world is an integral part of people’s lives, and when that connection fails we get frustrated. Think about it; how does it feel when you watch your favorite TV show and the screen pauses only to show a buffering circle? It’s annoying, irritating, and infuriating. During the fi rst week of class I myself had diffi culties with the Wi-Fi, or lack thereof, in my apartment. I wanted to translate the anger I felt every day at home trying to relax by watching TV after a long day of classes or my anger with slow Wi-Fi to my assignment. Anger is a diffi cult emotion to display on fi lm; however, I hope that something so common as a poor internet connection will allow viewers to relate to the anger felt in my fi lm. As a broadcast journalism student all of the video work I produce is non-fi ction work. This project was the fi rst time I created a fi ction and creative fi lm, and the process was much different. When shooting for broadcast news you generally plan interviews ahead of time, prep questions, and then go to the event or area you are covering and gather b-roll. Shooting for a creative fi lm project requires much more planning than broadcast, you have to write a script, pick actors, plan where you want to shoot, and decide on the camera angles that will further your story. I also found fi lming a creative project is much more hectic than fi lming news packages; as a director the entire crew waits on you, whereas as a producer for broadcast you just blend into the location and gather a few shots. In all, I enjoyed learning how to write, fi lm, act, direct and produce; through this experience I’ve learned that ultimately broadcast news journalism is perhaps the fi eld I belong in.
