The Health Department creates a breastfeeding room in the Health Centre Puerto del Rosario II

Fuerteventura’s Health Department, appointed by the Health Council of the Canarian Government, has created a breastfeeding room in the Health Centre Puerto del Rosario II, in a space that has been prepared next to the Paediatric area.

This room will enable mothers to breastfeed their babies or extract milk while they wait in the health centre, or during their working day, if they are employees of the centre. This new initiative aims at improving the attention towards users. This is one of the actions included in the strategy of the fourth and last phase of the Initiative for the Humanisation of Assistance to Birth and Breastfeeding (IHAN), to transform Fuerteventura into an IHAN
Island, by finalising all the phases of the initiative.
The Health Centre Puerto del Rosario II now joins the health centres of Puerto del Rosario I and Antigua, which also provide a breastfeeding room for their users and employees.
On the other hand, breastfeeding workshops are taking place in all the basic areas of the island. The workshops take place in the Health Centre Puerto del Rosario I, on Tuesdays from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, in the Health Centre Puerto del Rosario II, on Thursdays from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm and on Tuesdays, every two weeks, in the meeting room of Maternal Education, as well as, every Tuesday from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, in the space made available in the premises of Antigua’s Hunters’ Society.
The director of Fuerteventura’s Health Department, Sandra Celis, indicated that “we must offer mothers all the necessary tools to help them breastfeed, which must also be the objective of all the institutions, and public health services must show the example”.
On the other hand, the director of Health Services, José Luis Rodríguez, considers that “creating spaces that promote breastfeeding is an investment in the health of babies for the future” and he added that “with those actions, we promote this important role of mothers, who are often limited and abandon breastfeeding”.
