“Fuerteventura 1924” is a testimony of the memory of life on the island of Unamuno

The book called “Fuerteventura 1924” was presented, in February. It is a research written by the historian, Carmelo Torres, that relates the exiles of Miguel de Unamuno, the Marquis de Cortina and Rodrigo Soriano in the context of an era when Fuerteventura had become an island where convicted people were sent to live their exile.

Felipe Bermúdez Suarez (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1944), a doctor in Theology at the Pontifical Comillas University and emeritus professor of the Theology Centre of

Las Palmas (now called ISTIC), animated the event, which was taking place in the Events’ Hall of the Island’s Archives.

Carmelo Torres was born, in 1975, in Puerto del Rosario. He graduated in History from the University of La Laguna. Between 2000 and 2001, he did a Master’s in International Restoration and Rehabilitation of Built Heritage. He managed rescue projects of sources of documents concerning Fuerteventura at the Provincial Historical Archives of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

L’œuvre « Fuerteventura 1924 » a été présentée, février. Il s’agit d’une recherche rédigée par l’historien Carmelo Torres qui s’est submergé dans les exils de Miguel de Unamuno, du Marquis de Cortina et de Rodrigo Soriano dans le contexte d’une époque où Fuerteventura était devenue une île où les condamnés étaient exilés.

This research aimed at gathering the news regarding the exiles that used to appear in the press at the time, as well as the creations that those personalities produced during their forced stays in Fuerteventura.

The book benefited from a subsidy from Fuerteventura’s Cabildo through a line of subsidies for the year 2022 given to people for the publication of literary creations and research of interest for the island. 4 books benefitted from this line of support, including Carmelo Torres’ book.

Restauration et Réhabilitation du Patrimoine Édifié. Il a dirigé des projets de sauvetage de sources documentaires concernant Fuerteventura aux Archives Historiques Provinciales de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Cette recherche a permis de retrouver des renseignements sur les exils qui apparaissaient dans la presse de l’époque, ainsi que le travail que ces personnalités ont produit pendant leurs séjours forcés à Fuerteventura.

Le livre a été subventionné par l’Institut Insulaire grâce à la ligne de subvention pour 2022, venant du Cabildo de Fuerteventura pour les personnes physiques, pour la publication d’œuvres de création littéraire et de recherche d’intérêt pour l’île. 4 œuvres ont bénéficié de ces subventions à cette occasion, dont celle de Carmelo Torres.
