New Fulbright Partner: University of Tampere

Team Finland Needs Fulbright Alumni From the Executive Director Why are Finland's schools so successful?

This question has prompted countless delegations of education professionals from around the world to visit Finland in recent years in search of the answer. Finland's reputation has spread in tandem with its repeated achievement of top positions in the OECD Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) as well as other international studies. It is not surprising that this past year more delegations of American education experts have also visited the Fulbright Center in Helsinki than ever before.

There is a growing interest in developing more cooperation and exchanges between the United States and Finland both in education in general and teacher education in particular.

To respond to the demand from both sides of the Atlantic, the Fulbright Center and the U.S. Department of State have decided to strengthen the Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program in Finland. This will be done in partnership with the University of Jyväskylä, which is known for its strengths in teacher education and research, a strong emphasis on internationalization, and an excellent relationship with the Fulbright Center. The partnership aims to further develop the content of the program, increase interaction between the U.S. teachers and Finnish education specialists, support the creation of long-term cooperation, and increase outcomes with direct impact at the policy level. The newly enhanced program will be offered already during the next academic year, and we are very excited about the potential of this initiative.

We have recently signed our first long-term cooperation agreement with an American university. The new cooperation with Vanderbilt University (p. 18) provides unique opportunities for Finnish undergraduate students to study in the United States at a top-level university. The first fully-funded Finnish grantee has already been selected for the upcoming academic year.

The Fulbright Center’s partnership agreements have also expanded to include new opportunities for U.S. scholars, as the Center has signed a long-term cooperation agreement with the University of Tampere (p. 4). The new Fulbright-University of Tampere Scholar Award offers research and lecturing opportunities in any discipline represented at the University of Tampere (p. 8-9).

Our invited columnist, Ambassador of Finland to the United States, Ritva Koukku-Ronde, emphasizes the importance of alumni (p. 2). Indeed, it is not possible to talk about Fulbright without talking about its alumni. This year the Finnish ASLAFulbright Alumni Association celebrates its 60th anniversary (p.20). It is one of the oldest Fulbright alumni associations in the world. However, its focus is firmly on the future, for in addition to its growing membership activities, the association has joined the Fulbright Center to support the development and funding of our exchanges. The alumni, both in Finland and the United States, play an immensely important role throughout all aspects of our Finnish-American Fulbright program.

Exchange programs in the fields of science and education offer people the opportunity to experience the culture and society of another country. The Fulbright Center in Finland does unique work in this respect. In addition to its academic merits the Fulbright program helps to create lasting networks and sustained cooperation in these fields.

The Fulbright program has been an integral part of the relations between Finland and the United States already over 60 years. The success of the Finnish basic education system in the international PISA tests has created a strong interest in the United States.

This interest we also see in the Fulbright Program. American policy makers and experts are now looking closely at this outstanding Finnish expertise area.

Teachers and other specialists of education travel regularly from the United States to Finland to find out how our schools function.They visit different schools, talk to officials and sometimes even enjoy a free school meal with the students and teachers. In addition, school groups or groups of teachers, principals and teachers-unions visit the Embassy and Consulate Generals every week to learn what makes Finland so successful when it comes to education.

Finnish Lessons: What Can the World Learn from Educational Change in Finland?, a recent book by Dr. Pasi Sahlberg, has been a hit in the United States and we have been handing out thousands of copies of it to share best practices and to start up an inspiring dialogue.

The American interest has extended to our universities and higher education as well, and there is plenty of room for further development.

Hopefully this interest will turn into an even stronger longterm research cooperation and student exchange programs.

Finland is known not only for its world-class education system, but also for its innovation, high technology and cultural achievements.

To further promote long-term cooperation between Finland and the United States, we have recently launched the Team Finland USA partnership.

The idea of this nationwide network is to promote Finland’s external economic relations and country brand, the internationalization of Finnish companies, as well as foreign investment in Finland.

The Fulbright alumni in the U.S. are a very valuable group of experts who know Finland well. To enhance the Finnish-American relations it is very important to get the Fulbright alumni involved in the Team Finland activities. I am confident that there is a lot of potential interest and untapped energy when it comes to engaging the alumni in various fields of cooperation.

I welcome you to contact the Embassy or the Finnish Consulate Generals in the United States with any ideas to further develop the alumni cooperation. I am confident that our two countries have a lot to learn from each other in the ways we want to enhance and deepen our relations further.

New Grant for U.S. Scholars:

The Fulbright-University of Tampere Scholar Award University of Tampere and the Fulbright Center have signed a collaborative agreement creating the Fulbright-University of Tampere Scholar Award.

“The University of Tampere has a long history of Fulbright programs. For us they have been the most important avenue when we have built research cooperation in the United States, the world leader in science. Therefore the new Award Program is eagerly anticipated and welcome”, says Pertti Haapala, Vice-Rector in charge of research at the University of Tampere.

The University of Tampere has hosted altogether 70 American Fulbright grant-

ees since the beginning of the Fulbright program in Finland – the new award strengthens the continuing cooperation.

The agreement was signed during the America in Living Color seminar, which was organized by the North American Studies Program at the University of Tampere and the Fulbright Center.

First application round for the academic year 2014-2015 is open until August 2013. The award is intended for conducting research and lecturing and is for any field represented at the university. However, preference may be given to scholars researching and lecturing on society and health.

Celebrating at the House of the Estates:

Finnish Fulbright Center Grantees 2013-2014 In May, the Finnish Fulbright Center Grantees gathered for their orientation seminar and award ceremony. The day was filled with informative sessions on issues such as visas, social security and taxes, and the grantees also met with Fulbright Center alumni to discuss their experiences in the United States.

The orientation concluded with an award ceremony where the new grantees received their grant certificates, followed by a reception hosted by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Deputy Director General Jari Sinkari from the Department for Communications and Culture at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs delivered remarks on behalf of the Finnish Government, and Chargé d’Affaires Danny Hall offered his greetings on behalf of the U.S. Embassy.

Many thanks to our grantees, alumni, partners and friends for a wonderful orientation day, and a special thanks to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs for hosting the award ceremony and reception at the House of the Estates!

The Lois Roth Endowment Award to Knowles and Whorton Sophie Knowles and Lindsay Whorton, Fulbright U.S. student grantees, received this year’s Lois Roth Endowment Award.

The Lois Roth Endowment Selection Committee concluded that the applicant pool was extremely strong this year, thus making the selection decision very difficult.

Sophie Knowles is a middle school Mathematics teacher from Brooklyn, New York. As a Fulbright student, she is currently conducting a Master’s degree program in Education and Globalization at the University of Oulu. In her degree related research, Sophie is exploring what Oulubased students perceive is expected of them by their academic and greater community in learning and outcomes and what students think they are expected to get out of their schooling in general. She will use her Lois Roth funding for the purpose of interviewing students, teachers and administrators in Oulu and Helsinki.

Lindsay Whorton is a Ph.D. student in Education from Oxford University in the UK. She is visiting the University of Helsinki for her Fulbright year. Her research focuses on understanding how teachers’ unions participate in and impact the education policy-making process in Finland. In particular, Lindsay is exploring teachers’ unions’ involvement in reforming teachers’ compensation. The Lois Roth Award will allow her to translate crucial documents for her research from Finnish to English.

The Roth Endowment, that supports exchanges across national and cultural boundaries to enhance international communication and understanding, was set up in memory of Lois Wersba Roth.

The Endowment commemorates her life by supporting selected people who work in the places and fields of enquiry that she loved. The Fulbright Center has cooperated with the Lois Roth Endowment for years, and U.S. Fulbright students in Finland focusing in arts, humanities and social sciences have been annually granted the Roth Endowment Award. www.fulbright.fi

University of Tampere Top Player in Social Sciences in Finland The University of Tampere has a strong reputation in social sciences and education, including political and administrative sciences.

Health sciences are another focal point of the University and comprise medical training, education in health and nursing sciences, and the emerging field of biomedicine.

“We are strong in social and health sciences and leading research and education in these fields in Finland,” says Harri Melin, Vice-Rector at the University of Tampere.

Comparing Social Systems in North American and Nordic Countries Professor Katri Sieberg teaches students in the North American Studies Program at the University of Tampere. The program combines political science and economics, and investigates research on the United States, Canada and Mexico. At the core of the program is the comparison 8

of welfare regimes in these countries with those of the Nordic countries.

“There are huge differences between social systems in the Nordic countries and the United States,” Sieberg says.

Sieberg came to Finland as a Fulbright scholar from the United States ten years ago.

Her roots are in Finland, but her greatgreat-grandparents emigrated to the United States.

“Our third child was born here. She is really proud of it and says that she is the only true Tampere native in our family,” Sieberg laughs.

Sieberg says that Finns are intelligent and active students.

“You can go much deeper into things because they are such quick learners.

I see a lot of joy in the students here – they learn because they are enthusiastic.”

Generating Human Spare Parts from Stem Cells In the field of biomedicine, the University

of Tampere joined forces with Tampere University of Technology and founded the Institute of Biomedical Technology, or BioMediTech.

One of the key projects in BioMediTech is the Human Spare Parts research program which is aiming to build ‘spare parts’ to replace damaged or degenerate body parts. Nearly a hundred researchers and experts are working on creating new cell and tissue technology.

“The Human Spare Parts program is researching and developing technologies that will enable us to generate bone and maybe even neural tissue grafts grown from the patient’s own tissue,” says Program Manager Juho Väisänen.

The aim of the research is to be able to remedy, for example, the neural tissue in an injured spinal cord, or challenging damages to facial bones.

Other outstanding medical research at the University includes research on vaccines, mitochondrial genetics, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Developing Research and Reforming Education In recent years, the University of Tampere has been strengthening its profile as a research university. At the same time, the University has undertaken a large-scale educational reform.

“We were the first university in Finland to adopt wide-ranging degree programs in our key fields. Many small degree programs were combined into comprehensive Bachelor’s Programs,” says Vice-Rector Harri Melin.

“We are pioneers in educational reform in Finland.”

Disciplinary boundaries have been coming down with this reform – cooperation between different scientific fields is increasing, and there are growing numbers of multidisciplinary research projects. Internationalization is an aim in both education and research.

Melin can think of several good reasons why it would be worthwhile for researchers to come to the University of Tampere: “If you are into high-standard medical research, research on Nordic society or Russia, communication and information sciences or humantechnology interaction, Tampere is the right university for you.”

Learning to Teach Both Sides of the Story Many times we only have a chance to learn information from one perspective. Often it is one person relaying their interpretation of a situation and it becomes our responsibility to learn the alternative view. As a history teacher, I am always looking for new ways to learn and deliver that alternative view. My time studying the European Union and NATO from the European perspective has provided a different lens in which to teach these two important governing bodies to my government students in the U.S. It was also a week that challenged my political views and helped me come to a better understanding of how global decisions are made.

We began the seminar by being whisked away to Luxembourg aboard a bus filled with U.S. Fulbrighters from all over Europe. We spent our first night at the Ambassador’s house and then spent the next day listening to a case being heard at the European Union Court of Justice. It was interesting to learn not only about the justice system but to think about the influence that this system has on trans-Atlantic decisions. For the rest of the trip, we spent our time in multiple meetings with decision makers and influencers in the EU and NATO arenas. What impacted me greatly was the time that we spent with Ambassador Ivo Daalder.

He spoke very candidly about his job and his role in building consensus among the NATO decision makers. It was a unique chance to understand the reasoning and methodology behind the decisions being made in this collective defense organization.

From the first night at the Ambassador’s house to the many meetings that followed, my time in Belgium and Luxembourg offered insights from Ambassadors, scholars and other Fulbrighters that cannot be found in books or articles. The conversations and lectures pushed my understanding of the EU and NATO along with solidifying the role that these two important organizations play in the global community. In Finnish education, teachers often talk of students being held within their hands and nurturing them while they come to understand the lesson for the day. I felt this same spirit within during my time at the seminar.

I hope to be able to deliver the lessons I learned with the same approach to my government students in Washington, D.C. so that they too can benefit from understanding both sides of the story.

Silja Häkkinen ja Linda Haapajärvi osallistuivat talvella nk. enrichment-seminaareihin: Silja helmikuussa Arizonan Phoenixissa ja Linda maaliskuussa Missourin St. Louisissa.

Seminaarit ovat erinomainen tilaisuus tavata eri tieteenaloja edustavia Fulbright-stipendiaatteja, jotka tulevat eri puolilta maailmaa, sillä kuhunkin seminaariin kokoontuu yleensä toista sataa Fulbrighteria lähes sadasta eri maasta. Tuttujakin kasvoja voi tulla vastaan: ”amerikkalaisten isäntien joukossa oli Paul Burgess, joka opiskeli viime vuonna Fulbright-stipendillä Suomessa. Mukana menossa oli myös stipendiaattikollegani Laura Berger New Yorkista. Meillä oli hauska jälleennäkeminen seminaarin ja blues-musiikin merkeissä”, Linda muistelee kokemustaan.

St. Louisissa järjestetyn seminaarin teema oli Western Expansion. ”Erinomaisesti järjestetyn seminaarin ohjelma oli tiivis.

Oli hienoa tutustua kaupunkiin, joka ei ole matkailukohteiden listan kärjessä”, Linda kertoo. ”Saksalaisten siirtolaisten perimä panimoineen ja kenkäteollisuuksineen, sittemmin Detroitin kaltainen teollisuuden vähenemisen myötä koettu kohtalo muuttotappiokuntana, tiukan rotuerottelun edelleen näkyvät jäljet ja yritykset kehittää kaupunki uuteen nousuun olivat varsin kiintoisia oppiaiheita sosiologille.”

Phoenixin seminaari puolestaan käsitteli ilmastonmuutosta (Global Challenges, Local Solutions – Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability). “Tarkemmin tutustuimme Arizonassa vallitseviin ympäristöoloihin ja pohdimme ilmaston muuttumisen vaikutusta ihmisten elämään kuivassa ja kuumassa Arizonassa”, Silja kertoo. ”Osallistuimme luennoille ja teimme pienemmissä ryhmissä projektia, jossa valittiin jokin ympäristöongelma ja keksittiin tuote tai palvelu ongelman ratkaisemiseksi. Seminaarin lopussa ratkaisumme esiteltiin paikallisista yrittäjistä ja sijoittajista koostuvalle tuomaristolle”, Silja kuvailee seminaarin sisältöä.

Enrichment-seminaarien ohjelmaan kuuluu myös illallinen tai illanvietto amerikkalaisissa perheissä. Silja illallisti kahden muun Fulbrighterin kanssa entisen diplomaatin kotona: ”periamerikkalaisen illallisen aikana keskustelimme tähänastisista kokemuksistamme Yhdysvalloissa ja vaihdoimme ajatuksia oman kulttuurimme ja amerikkalaisen kulttuurin eroista ja yhtäläisyyksistä.” ”Kaiken kaikkiaan seminaari oli mahtava kokemus ja antoi mahdollisuuden nähdä Yhdysvaltoja myös oman isäntäyliopiston ja -kaupungin ulkopuolelta, ” Silja tiivistää. ”Tietysti oli antoisaa tavata muita Fulbright-opiskelijoita ympäri maailmaa.

Elämää Atlantin toisella puolen – ovi loputtomiin mahdollisuuksiin Olin pitkään haaveillut lähteväni ulkomaille vaihto-opiskelijaksi. Gallaudetin yliopisto on hyvin tunnettu kuurojen yhteisössä ympäri maailman. Monet ulkomaalaiset kuurot ovat tulleet Yhdysvaltojen pääkaupunkiin, Washington DC:aan, koska Gallaudetin yliopisto tarjoaa heille loputtomasti mahdollisuuksia. Käytän kuuro-termiä, vaikka joukkoon kuuluisivat huonokuuloiset, sisäkorvaistutetut ja kuurot: he kaikki ovat mielestäni omalla tavallaan kuuroja ja kuuro on kuulovammaista myönteisempi sana. Yliopistossa on myös kuulevia opiskelijoita, mutta heille edellytyksenä on se, että he osaavat viittomakieltä tai tulevat oppimaan sen.

Valitsin Gallaudetin yliopiston, koska minua kiehtoi nähdä viittomakielinen yliopistomaailma. Gallaudet tarjoaa monia pääaineita kandidaatti-, maisteri- ja tohtoriohjelmissa ja kaikki opetus tapahtuu amerikkalaisella viittomakielellä eli American Sign Language:lla (ASL). Kaikissa maissa on oma viittomakielensä samoin kuten puhutut kieletkin. Ennen tuloani Yhdysvaltoihin en osannut ASL:ää vaan opin sen ollessani siellä.

Opiskelu Gallaudetin yliopistossa oli minulle unelmien täyttymys, koska sain kerrankin kuulua enemmistöön. Suomessa olin aina se ”erityinen opiskelija” lukioajasta lähtien, sillä käytin viittomakielen tulkkeja opinnoissani. Itse asiassa käytän 12

edelleen, koska en ole vielä valmistunut maksoi 20 000 dollaria – ilman majoitusta ja ruokaa. Sain selville eräältä kuurolta ammattikorkeakoulusta. Aikomuksena tutulta Fulbright Centerin stipendimahon valmistua yhteisöpedagogiksi kansalaistoiminnan ja nuorisotyön koulutusohdollisuudesta. Hän oli itsekin Gallaudejelmasta kesäkuussa 2013. tin yliopistossa vaihto-opiskelijana yli Vaihto-opiskeluvuosi Washington kymmenen vuotta sitten. Päätin kokeilla DC:ssa vahvisti ammatillista kasvuani, onneani ja vein hakupaperini Fulbright Centerin toimistoon Hakaniemeen. Neusillä opin tuntemaan oman identiteettini viittomakielisenä kuurona. Itseluottavon kaikkia Yhdysvaltoihin lähtijöitä mukseni kasvoi paljon, koska pääsin aloittamaan hakuprosessin mahdollisimtapaamaan monia proman hyvissä ajoin. Mitä aiemmin haku on tehty fessoreita ja muita opisOpiskelu sitä helpompi on saada kelijatovereita, jotka ovat Gallaudetin ylistipendejä. Pääsin kumppaneihin, ammattikorkeakouluni ei myös tapaamaan muita stipendiaatteja voinut auttaa minua hakuprosessissa tai orientaatio- ja stipendienjakotilaisuudessa toukokuussa 2011. Stipendienjakoa rahoituksessa. edeltävänä yönä Suomi voitti maailmanSe ei kuitenkaan estänyt unelmani tomestaruuden jääkiekossa, joten muistan teuttamista, sillä uskoin unelmaan ja tein sen eteen töitä. Hain stipendejä useilta selvästi, milloin tapahtuma oli. Stipendieri tahoilta, sillä lukuvuosi yliopistossa tilaisuus oli hieno päivä: pääsin kuunte-

lemaan muiden kandidaatintutkinnon suorittaneiden stipendiaattien kokemuksia heidän jenkkivuosistaan. Sain myös käytännön vinkkejä lähtöön valmistautumista varten, kuten millaista viisumia minun tuli hakea. Tuolloin tajusin todella olleeni lähdössä valtameren toiselle puolen yhdeksi lukuvuodeksi.

Olin special student Gallaudetin yliopistossa eli sain valita mitä kursseja halusin opiskella. Valitsin paljon Communication studies -kursseja, koska pystyin siirtämään joitakin opintopisteitä nykyiseen ammattikorkeakouluuni opiskelijavaihdon jälkeen. Valitsin myös joitakin Deaf Studies -kursseja. Deaf Studies tutkii viittomakieleen ja kuurouteen liittyviä ilmiöitä. Asuin kampuksella, joten pääsin tutustumaan moniin ihmisiin. Kansainvälisiä opiskelijoita oli mm.

Etelä-Amerikasta, Euroopasta, Aasiasta, Afrikasta ja Lähi-idästä. Opintojen lisäksi olin mukana Green Gallaudet -järjestössä edistämässä ympäristöasioita.

Gallaudetin yliopistolla on monenlaisia perinteitä. Jokainen vuosiluokka on esimerkiksi jättänyt jonkin salaisen yhteismerkkinsä jonnekin kampuksen alueelle, esim. puuhun ja penkkiin. Lisäksi yliopistolla on kaljuperinne. Ensimmäisen vuoden opiskelijat eli freshmanit värjäävät hiuksensa hullunkurisilla väreillä syyslukukaudella, ja tammikuussa

heidän päänsä leikataan kaljuiksi.

Washington D.C. on eurooppalaismainen kaupunki, sillä siellä ei ole pilvenpiirtäjiä. Itse rakastuin Georgetownin kaupunginosaan, jossa oli hienonvärisiä rakennuksia, söpöjä kuppiloita ja kiinnostavia kauppoja. Vuoden aikana olin ehtinyt käydä New Yorkissa, Bostonissa, Pittsburghissa ja Torontossa. Kevätlomalla telttailimme Floridassa. Lukuvuoden jälkeen suuntasin myös Texasiin ja Kaliforniaan. Kaliforniassa CSUN yliopistossa oli amerikkalaisen ystäväni valmistujaiset. Amerikkalaiset valmistujaiset olivat todella juhlallisia.

Haluaisin lopuksi siteerata yhdysvaltaista ihmisoikeusaktivistia Martin Luther King Jr:ta. Tosin korvasin faith:n toisella sanalla. ”Take the first step in dream.

The problem was that there wasn’t enough science to back up these recommendations for people with physical disabilities.”

Making a Difference in Developing Countries Although Mina has moved back to Finland, her professional focus remains resolutely international. As international development coordinator for Kynnys, a Finnish NGO focusing on human rights and independent living for disabled people, her job has already taken her to Tajikistan and Ethiopia, with a visit to Kazakhstan up next.

“The prevalence of disability in some of these countries is very high, and it’s closely related to poverty. Healthcare is inadequate, so injuries and illnesses go untreated. Diet is limited, and this leads to illness, disease and disability.”

“People with disabilities in developing countries are the most vulnerable group. Discrimination is at a completely different level than it is in the developed world. And when you don’t have basic healthcare or nutrition, you don’t have the energy to get an education, to find a job, or to improve your life.”

Perhaps the most significant problem is the lack of accessibility in the built environment. “Even though there is a lot of development aid going towards improving education and building schools, the needs or requirements of kids with disabilities are not taken into account. Many times the schools are not built to be accessible for people with disabilities.”

She is currently working to develop nutrition education programmes in developing countries, aiming to train people with disabilities to become nutrition educators within their communities, and growing a peer support system.

For Mina, it’s a question of balance, and of making a difference. “I really love research. It sounds a bit dorky, but I love the concept of unanswered questions and finding the answers. But I also love to work with people. Research is useless unless we can translate it into a form where people can use it.”

Näköalapaikka kulttuurivaihtoon

Fulbright Center tarjoaa korkeakouluopiskelijoille eri pituisia työharjoittelumahdollisuuksia ympäri vuoden ja harjoittelija saa erinomaisen näköalapaikan kansainvälisen koulutuksen ja kulttuurivaihdon tehtäviin.

Christa Jakobson, Saksassa asuva 24-vuotias suomalaisopiskelija oli Fulbright Centerissä harjoittelijana kevättalvella ja kertoo seuraavassa kokemuksistaan.

Päädyin muutaman mutkan kautta Berliiniin opiskelemaan Pohjois-Amerikan tutkimusta John F. Kennedy Instituuttiin.

Osana opiskeluun kuuluu harjoittelu, tä ja miten motivoituneita he ovat uusien jonka järjestämiseen ja toteuttamiseen kokemustensa jälkeen. Työ Fulbrightissa yliopisto on antanut opiskelijoille täyon opettanut ymmärtämään kansainden vapauden.

Internships at the Fulbright Center As part of our effort to improve collaboration with higher education institutions and to give students the opportunity to enrich their academic and professional experience and work in a multicultural environment, the Fulbright Center receives interns every year for varying lengths of time.

This spring, there are three interns working with us, Sharon Choi from Hong Kong who is currently studying at the University of Helsinki, Guadalupe Lopez Acuna, a former Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant grantee from Argentina and Alfred Rafael Garcia from the Philippines. Both Guadalupe and Alfred came to the Fulbright Center as a result of our collaboration with the University of Tampere where they are currently completing an Erasmus Mundus Master's degree in Research and Innovation in Higher Education (MARIHE).

Ritva Laamanen (vas.) osallistui alkuvuodesta Fulbright Centerissä järjestettyyn Propell-koulutukseen. Kouluttajana toiminut Stella Saliari ETS:n Amsterdamin toimistosta on vetänyt työpajan lähes 30 kertaa useissa Euroopan maissa, mm.

Norjassa, Belgiassa, Saksassa, Puolassa ja Italiassa. ”Koulutus perehdyttää tehokkaasti TOEFL-testiin, mutta antaa paljon myös sellaista tietoa pisteytyksestä sekä puhumisen ja kirjoittamisen arvioinnista, jota voi soveltaa laajemmin kuin pelkästään TOEFL-valmennukseen”, Saliari kertoo.

Laamanen ja Saliari pitävät työpajaa myös erinomaisena mahdollisuutena syventyä kollegoiden kanssa päiväksi englannin kielen saloihin ja testausasioihin.

Keskustelua ja käytäntöä TOEFL-työpajassa Kuinka evästää opiskelijoita TOEFL-testiä varten? Minkä tasoista kielitaitoa testissä vaaditaan ja miten testi arvostellaan?

Näihin ja moniin muihin kysymyksiin saa vastauksen Educational Testing Servicen (ETS) englanninopettajille kehittämästä ammatillisesta Propell-työpajasta.

Yhden päivän mittaisessa työpajassa tutustutaan TOEFLiBT-testiin ja annetaan vinkkejä englannin kielen opettamiseen testiä varten. Päivän aikana tutustutaan kuhunkin testiosioon – kuullun ymmärtämiseen, luetun ymmärtämiseen, puhe-osioon ja kirjoitusosioon – käydään läpi kysymysesimerkkejä sekä pisteytetään puhe- ja kirjoitustehtäviä. Työpajana vetäjänä toimii ETS:n kouluttaja, joka on useimmiten taustaltaan englannin opettaja.

ETS järjesti alkutalvesta ensimmäisen

Propell-työpajan Suomessa yhdessä Fulbright Centerin kanssa. Ritva Laamanen, Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulun lehtori, oli yksi työpajan osallistujista.

Englantia auto- ja kuljetustekniikan yksikössä opettava Laamanen kertoo, että ulkomaille vaihtoon lähtevät opiskelijat kyselevät testistä, joten hän päätti osallistua työpajaan ottaakseen asiasta perusteellisesti selkoa. ”Koulutus antoi paljon enemmän kuin olin odottanut ja kaikki oli vieläpä ilmaista”, Laamanen iloitsee. ”Arvioimme kielitaidon tasoa ohjeiden mukaan ja vertasimme omaa arviointiamme malliarviointiin. Tutkimme myös arviointikriteerejä ja keskustelimme niistä kollegoiden kanssa. Keskustelu oli erittäin hyödyllistä”, Laamanen kuvaa työpajaa. Työpajan osallistujat saavat myös materiaalipaketin: ”Informaatiopaketti

sisältää kattavat testausohjeet, englannin opetukseen sopivaa materiaalia ja aktiviteetteja sekä ohjeet opiskelijan preppaukseen testiä varten”, Laamanen kertoo.

Laamanen suosittelee osallistumista koulutukseen ”ehdottomasti”. ”Arviointi on varmasti kaikissa oppilaitoksessa ajankohtainen asia ja monissa ammattikorkeakouluissa on tehty arviointikriteerejä eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen pohjalta. On hyödyllistä verrata näitä kriteerejä TOEFL:n kriteereihin ja keskustella niistä”, Laamanen perustelee ja kiittää myös koulutuksen tarjoamaa mahdollisuutta tavata muita englanninopettajia ja verkostoitua.

Kanadassa ennätysmäärä kansainvälisiä opiskelijoita Yli 100 000 kansainvälistä opiskelijaa opiskeli Kanadassa vuonna 2012. Sadantuhannen opiskelijan määrä ylittyi ensimmäistä kertaa ja kasvua vuodesta 2004 on 60 prosenttia. ”Kanadalaiset yliopistot ovat tyytyväisiä siihen, että maine korkeatasoisesta koulutuksesta houkuttelee kansainvälisiä opiskelijoita yhä enemmän”, sanoo Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada -järjestön johtaja Paul Davidson. ”Kansainväliset opiskelijat eivät ainoastaan myötävaikuta merkittävästi maamme talouteen vaan he tuovat kampuksillemme myös uusia näkökulmia ja

kulttuureita rikastaen siten kaikkien opiskelijoiden oppimiskokemuksia”.

Kanadassa on hiljattain esitetty kansainväliseen opiskelijaohjelmaan muutoksia, jotka sujuvoittaisivat kansainvälisten opiskelijoiden työluvan saantia ja sallisivat tietyillä opiskeluluvilla opiskelevien työskentelyn kampuksen ulkopuolella. ”Kanada kilpailee maailman parhaista opiskelijoista ja teemme jatkuvasti työtä sen puolesta, että Kanadassa opiskelu olisi houkutteleva vaihtoehto”, kertoo kansalaisuus, maahanmuutto- ja monikulttuurisuudesta vastaava ministeri Jason Kenney.

Uusia mahdollisuuksia suomalaisille perustutkinto-opiskelijoille

Fulbright Center yhteistyöhön Vanderbilt-yliopiston kanssa Fulbright Center ja Vanderbilt-yliopisto ovat allekirjoittaneet yhteistyösopimuksen. Sopimus tuo suomalaisille kandidaatin tutkintoon tähtääville opiskelijoille mahdollisuuden opiskella korkeatasoisessa yhdysvaltalaisessa yliopistossa kaikki kustannukset kattavalla stipendirahoituksella. Lisäksi opiskelijat ovat oikeutettuja Fulbright Centerin stipendiaattien saamiin tukipalveluihin.

Fulbright Centerin keskeisiin tehtäviin kuuluu paitsi rahoittaa stipendejä myös hankkia ja tuoda suomalaisten ulottuville uusia merkittäviä stipendimahdollisuuksia yhteistyösopimusten avulla. Tennesseen Nashvillessä sijaitseva Vanderbilt-yliopisto on korkeasta tasostaan tunnettu yksityinen tutkimusyliopisto.

Vanderbiltilla on useita stipendejä, jotka kattavat opiskelukustannukset koko kandidaatin tutkinnon suorittamisen ajalta.

Lisäksi yliopistolla on lahjoitusvaroin perustettu nimenomaan suomalaisille tarkoitettu kaikki kulut kattava stipendi. Vanderbil-

tin kanssa solmimallaan sopimuksella Fulbright Center tuo suomalaisten haettavaksi Vanderbiltin rahoituksen, minkä lisäksi Fulbright Center tarjoaa sopimuksen pohjalta yhteisesti valituille opiskelijoille kaikki Fulbright Centerin stipendiaateille kuuluvat edut, mm. neuvonta- ja tietopalvelut, lähtöorientaatioseminaarin sekä alumnitoiminnan verkostoineen.

Ensimmäinen Fulbright Center Partnership Award for Undergraduate Students -stipendi myönnettiin toukokuussa Niina Kurjelle. Kurki valmistui ylioppilaaksi helsinkiläisen Ressun lukion IB-linjalta tänä keväänä ja hän lähtee syksyllä opiskelemaan taloutta ja viestintää Vanderbilt-yliopistoon. Vanderbilt myönsi Niina Kurjelle Cornelius Vanderbilt -stipendin.

Finland is a nation of quiet values, of people who appreciate a peaceful society, and a culture that protects the rights of her children.

I moved to the small Finnish city of Joensuu in the middle of winter just a week after the shortest day of the year; I would be working with my new colleagues at the University of Eastern Finland to investigate how Finnish teachers teach scientific problem-solving skills to students aged 6-18. The children in Finland are generally successful in school and they are exceptional at exhibiting scientific problem-solving skills. My hope was that by observing teachers and learning their teaching methods from the perspective of a teacher, we could gain insights to help improve the U.S. education system. Thus far, I have not been disappointed by what I've learned in Finland; however, I have been surprised...

Last September, in the lunch line at the University of Helsinki, I found myself staring into a bowl of what can only be called “lunch” in my childhood nightmares. In Finnish, it’s called hernekeitto. It looked like a thoroughly smithereened grey-green mush.

“What is this?” I blurted to my Finnish friend.

“It’s Thursday,” she said, bubbling with pea soup enthusiasm, “Thursday is split pea soup day in Finland. They serve it everywhere for lunch, even in the army...”

ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association 60 Years

Ameriikan alligaattori ASLA-Fulbright Alumni ry perustettiin vuonna 1953 ja yhdistys juhlii tänä vuonna 60-vuotista toimintaansa. Yhdistyksen aktiivi ja mm. yhdistyksen lehden perustaja ja sen toimittajana pitkään toiminut sysmäläinen Sirkka Pesari (nykyisin Lassila) sekä Ritva Toivonen (nykyisin Laurila) opiskelivat ASLA-stipendillä journalismia Missourin yliopistossa vuosina 1955-56. Sirkka kirjoitti Amerikankuulumisiaan säännöllisesti vanhemmilleen Annikki ja Eino Pesarille.

Tässä kuulumisia 60 vuoden takaa.

Hei! Siitä on noin sata ja yksi vuotta, kun viimeksi kirjoitin ja tiedän että olette olleet levottomia – anteeksi: Syy on yksin se että elämäni on ollut täydel lisen täynnä työtä.

Tavall isesti olen ehtinyt kotiin iltayöllä, ja silloin ei enää voi ryhtyä naputtelemaa n, muuten täti vuokraemäntä ei saisi kaipaa maansa unta. asioita. monia tehnyt olen että Ai olen että sitä, itse n Suurinpana pidän ainaki järjestänyt puolen tunnin televisionäytöksen.

Ja sitten, televisiojohtaja lupasi mulle puoli tuntia, jona aikana saisim me esitel lä ulkolaisia ylioppilaita. Toissa viikon lopuksi me ajoimme muutam an sadan kilometrin päässä olevaa n yliopistoon tutkiskelema an heidän eloansa ja oloansa. ylioppilaita, suomal aisia muita Tapasi mme . Mutta, lystiä puolin ja meillä oli kaikin mikä oli hienoa, menomatkalla me kävimme Hannibalissa Margaret Trumanin häissä – se presidentti Trumanin tytär joka vihittiin.

Mulla oli kamera ni mukana ja otin kuvia, jotka ainakin minun ajatteluni mukaan olivat varsin loistavia ja valokuvausluokan opettajani oli perin ylpeä niistä, mutta ah että se äijä haukkui mut perusteellisesti, kun en ollut tuonut niitä ajoissa luokka an, jotta hän olisi voinut pistää ne lehteen. Onneksi opin vähän reippa ampaa toimintavauhtia hänen saarna nsa jälkeen. Mutta kuka pystyy tekemä än mitään valokuvia, kun muuten kin on elämä täynnä työtä ja puuhaa.

Sitten minulle on tapahtunut jotain sellaista mitä ei vielä koskaa n tähän mennessä elämässäni.

Päivänä muutam ana kun tulin kotiin lehtikoululta ja köpöttelin postil aatikolle, oli siellä paketti minulle. Noin 30 cm pituinen kapea pahvil aatikko.

Ryhdyin aukaisemaan sitä ja sieltä pisti esiin HÄNTÄ. Ihan niin kuin sisiliskon, mutta suurempi.

Phil, joka kiikutti silloin mut autoll aan kotiin, säikähti kiljaisustani ja otti askin ja ryhtyi aukaisemaan sitä. Ja saatte pennin, jos arvaatte mitä siellä oli.

ELÄVÄ ALLIGAATTORIN POIKANEN. Tommonen 30 cm pituinen, inhoittavan ja vaaral lisen näköinen otus. En uskonut ensin kun Phil sanoi mitä siellä on, mutta kun hän näytti niin joltisenkin säikähtäneeltä pakko oli uskoa. Kuvitelkaa mun nuoria tunteitani – onneksi Phil oli aukaisemassa sitä. Jos mie olisin avannut sen, niin olisin kai kuollut sydänh alvaukseen.

Jaa että mistä se otus sitten tuli? Laatikon päällä oli nimeni ja laatikossa reikiä, että se oli tarkoitettu elämää n. Kiikutimme Ritvan kanssa sen sitten sisälle ja muistelimme taannoista New Orleansin retkeä. Siellä olimme tavanneet pari florida laista poikaa ja tuli puhuttua alliga attoreista. Ne sankarit olivat ilmeisesti lähettäneet allin meille leluksi.

Seisoi mme olohuoneessa ihmettelemässä otusta, joka oli painunut sohvan alle. Ovikel lo soi ja sisään tuli naapurin rouva, joka halusi tavata Mrs. Chilicottin. Sanoim me, ettei hän ole kotona, joten naapuri sanoi, että hänpä jää sitten odotta maan. Vieras meni istuma an sohval le jonka alla alli vaani. Onneksi hän lähti ennen kuin alli iski hampaa nsa mihinkään.

Se eleli talon alakerrassa yhden yön, alun perin salakavala kiero otus ja INHOITTAVA. Lahjoitin sen yliopiston eläintieteel liselle laitokselle, missä se on tähän mennessä purrut ainoastaan yhtä tyttöä. Minulta meni tosin vähän aikaa pohdiskeluun, kun olisin kovin mielel läni tuonut sen alliga attorin teille tuliaisiksi, mutta se on vähän hankal a liikutella. Ja toisekseen kesäll ä se olis jo suuri poika ja pistäisi kai melkein vaikka mitä poskeensa. Ritva otti siitä ja minusta kuvia, niin että perästä kuuluu.

Tässä istun ja tärisen taas itsestäni ja olen niin onnellinen siitä että pian pääsen näkemä än teitä ja miltä vanha Suomi näyttä ä. terveisin Sirkka

ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association Celebrates Its 60th Marianna Sydänmaanlakka Elected as President This year the Association is celebrating its 60th Anniversary Year. It is one of the oldest Fulbright alumni associations in the world.

The ASLA-Fulbright Alumni ry, founded in 1953, is a volunteer-based association with the purpose of building awareness of the Finnish Fulbright program through special events, meetings, and lectures for alumni members, current Fulbright grantees in Finland, and the general public. The Association membership is open to Finnish and American alumni of the ASLA-Fulbright program and any other grant programs administered by the Fulbright Center in Finland.

Marianna Sydänmaanlakka was elected the new Chair

of the Board in the Association’s meeting held in April 2013.

Sydänmaanlakka works as a Project Manager on 3D Learning Environment Second Life at the Sotunki Distance Learning Centre.

Sydänmaanlakka is a fresh Fulbright alumna, having spent the fall of 2012 in Maryland participating in the Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program with 19 teachers from eight countries. In her own Fulbright project Sydänmaanlakka studied what skills teachers need when teaching in the virtual world.

Sydänmaanlakka's predecessor, Dr. Arno Tanner continues as a Board member and as the Past President. He has recently relocated to Valletta, Malta, where the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) invited him as National Seconded Expert.

Alumni Visit the U.S. Embassy Innovation Center

Members of the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association, accompanied by U.S. and Finnish Fulbright Center grantees and Fulbright Center staff visited the brand new Innovation Center at the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki. They were greeted by Ambassador Bruce J. Oreck (center), who is also the Honorary Chair of the Fulbright Center Board of Directors.

The Innovation Center, unveiled in February of this year, is one of the most energy efficient embassy buildings in the world.

“More than just a space to showcase the very latest in energy efficient technologies, the Innovation Center exemplifies 21st century diplomacy in all of its forms”, says Ambassador Oreck.

Fulbright Golf Tournament For Newcomers and Experienced Golfers Alumni and friends of the Finnish-American Fulbright program participated in the ASLA-Fulbright Alumni Association’s 7th Annual Fulbright Alumni Golf Tournament in June 2013 at Kotojärvi Golf in Laukkoski. ASLA-Fulbright alumnus Erkki Nissinen has been the driving force behind the tournament since the beginning.

Alfred W. Crosby Received AHA's Highest Distinction Alfred W. Crosby, Professor Emeritus in History, Geography and American Studies at University of Texas-Austin, was honored at the American Historical Association in January with the AHA’s highest distinction.

As a scholar of “Big History”, Crosby’s interests lie in examining how the human species has interacted with the environment through the millennia. His 1972 seminal publication, The Columbian Exchange: Biological and Cultural Consequences of 1492, establishes this concept as critical to understanding the complex results of the commingling of plants and animals between the New and Old Worlds in recent centuries.

Fulbright-Saastamoinen Fellow Roger Coulombe (right, next to UEF colleague Risto Juvonen) returned to Finland to help teach a short course on Drug Metabolism and Bioanalysis, sponsored by the University of Helsinki Graduate School in Pharmaceutical Research. Cross-Cultural Exchange Benjamin Zeller has engaged his students at Lake Forest College in a crossAtlantic conversation with students at the University of Turku on the connections between food, culture, nationality, and place. This cross-cultural exchange over e-mail, Facebook and video conferencing is the result of connections made during his Fulbright Fellowship in Turku and will continue in the future.

In Memoriam Max Jakobson (1923–2013)

Diplomaatti, ministeri, ulkopoliittinen taustavaikuttaja ja ASLA-Fulbright ohjelman alumni Max Jakobson kuoli 9.3.2013. Toimittajana työuransa aloittanut Jakobson siirtyi ulkoministeriöön 1953 ja toimi muun muassa ministeriön poliittisen osaston päällikkönä ja YK-suurlähettiläänä. Jakobson työskenteli Suomen pysyvänä edustajana YK:ssa vuodesta 1965 vuoteen 1972. Ulkoministeriöstä hän siirtyi Elinkeinoelämän valtuuskunnan EVA:n johtoon vuonna 1975, josta hän jäi eläkkeelle vuonna 1984. Tasavallan presidentti

Mauno Koivisto myönsi Jakobsonille ministerin arvonimen vuonna 1990.

Max Jakobson perehtyi amerikkalaiseen journalismiin ASLA-stipendiaattina Leader-ohjelmassa Yhdysvalloissa vuonna 1952. Jakobson osallistui myöhemmin aktiivisesti Fulbright Centerin alumnitilaisuuksiin. Kaikki muistavat Max Jakobsonin ystävällisenä ja vaatimattomana ihmisenä.

Stark Suomalaiseen tiedeakatemiaan

The first Fulbright-Tampere University of Technology Scholar Chris Meehan was named as Young Engineer of the Year 2012 by the Delaware section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Chris Meehan, Bentley Systems Incorporated Chair of Civil Engineering at University of Delaware, is currently spending a year at Tampere University of Technology. His Fulbright project is Sustainable Building Foundations – A Geothermal Heat Pump Approach.

Fulbright Centerin johtokunnan jäsen Laura Stark on valittu Suomalaiseen tiedeakatemiaan.

Tiedeakatemia jakaantuu kahteen osastoon, matemaattis-luonnontieteelliseen sekä humanistiseen. Tiedeakatemian varsinaisiksi jäseniksi kutsutaan ansioituneita suomalaisia tieteenharjoittajia.

Jyväskylän yliopiston etnologian professori Laura Stark on ollut Fulbright Centerin johtokunnan jäsen vuodesta 2007 lähtien.

Tutkijaliikkuvuus – avain kansainvälisyyteen Suomen Akatemian, Fulbright Centerin, CIMOn ja Opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriön toukokuussa järjestämän yhteisen Tutkijaliikkuvuus – avain kansainvälisyyteen -seminaarin tuloksena syntyi luettelo toimenpiteistä, joilla tutkijoiden kansainvälistä liikkuvuutta ja sitä kautta suomalaisen tutkimuksen kansain-

välisyyttä voidaan edistää. Keväällä 2014 järjestetään seuraava tutkijanliikkuvuusseminaari, jossa katsotaan, miten seminaarin työpajoissa ehdotetut toimenpiteet ovat käynnistyneet. Omassa toiminnassaan Fulbright Center painottaa erityisesti tutkijoiden tukipalvelujen merkitystä laadukkaan ja tuloksellisen liikkuvuuden edistämisessä sekä eri tahojen yhteistyötä näiden palvelujen tehokkaassa järjestämisessä. North American Studies Roundtable Emphasized the Importance of Collaboration Program coordinators, lecturers and professors of North American Studies at Finnish universities convened at the 9th North American Studies Roundtable at the Fulbright Center.

The attendees emphasized the growing importance of collaboration, particularly as all North American Studies programs in Finland are facing financial challenges. The group also discussed the plans for the new John Morton Institute for North American Studies at the University of Turku, and Program Director Mika Aalto from the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA) briefed the group about FIIA’s resources and current research on North America.

Fulbright Center organizes the North American Studies Roundtable annually. The event provides a forum to discuss and enhance cooperation amongst the programs, to develop new initiatives to support the teaching of North American Studies in Finland, and to update and share information about Fulbright resources and the U.S., and Canadian Embassies.
