AC/DC Not Breaking Up Amid Retirement Rumors

After two days of massive speculation, Australian hard-rock pioneers AC/DC have shot down rumors that they are retiring. Frontman Brian Johnson has instead revealed that the band is going ahead with plans to record a new album, though admitted that founding member Malcolm Young is "taking a break from the band due to ill health." "We are definitely getting together in May in Vancouver," he told the Daily Telegraph. "We're going to pick up some guitars, have a plonk, and see if anybody has got any tunes or ideas. If anything happens, we'll record it." Rumors of the group's retirement began late Monday night when Australian radio station 6PR reported the breakup during their "Rumour File" section and tweeted that founding member Malcolm Young and his family "have moved back to Oz because he is very sick." Australian news anchor Peter Ford fueled rumors on his Twitter, stating, "There is some quite sad detail about it all, that I will not be reporting on, but the band/management may choose to reveal this" and that the "boys played together privately a few weeks back." The band itself confirmed that Young was the sick member in question in a Facebook post Wednesday morning. "After 40 years of life dedicated to AC/DC, guitarist and founding member Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to ill health," the band wrote. "Malcolm would like to thank the group’s diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support. In light of this news, AC/DC asks that Malcolm and his family’s privacy be respected during this time. The band will continue to make music." "I wouldn't like to say anything either way about the future," Johnson told the Telegraph earlier that day. "I'm not ruling anything out. One of the boys has a debilitating illness, but I don't want to say too much about it. He is very proud and private, a wonderful chap. We've been pals for 35 years and I look up to him very much."

Gwar Launch Dave Brockie Foundation

The surviving members of Gwar are launching a foundation to honor their late frontman Dave Brockie, a.k.a. Oderus Urungus, who died at the age of 50 on March 23rd. The foundation is intended to support other artists as well as preserve Brockie's own creative output. The bandmates released a video on YouTube this week announcing the creation of the foundation and thanking fans for their support. A statement explaining the foundation's goals accompanied the video: "The Dave Brockie Foundation is a charity fund with the mission of promoting the advancement of music, images, letters and performances in the arts," the statement said. "It will endeavor to encourage promising talents, as well as preserving the legacy of Dave's body of works. It intends to be a support system to those who have dedicated their lives in pursuit of creativity. The Dave Brockie Foundation will be a resource for artists in the fields of music, film, literature and all visual arts who cannot find funding through mainstream channels. "The DBF will also strive to catalog and preserve Dave's vast collection of original images, recordings and written words, and make them available for the world to appreciate. The foundation's first goal is to finance the creation of a memorial monument in Richmond, Virginia to provide the world with a place to pay respects to the memory of a very cherished man." In the video, the band also announced that they will hold a public memorial for Brockie on August 15th at Hadad's Lake in Richmond, Virginia, the day before the annual Gwar-B-Q.

Muse to Begin Work on New Album This Spring

After their Coachella appearances, Muse will begin work on their seventh album next month. "We're going to go back in May and start working on some new stuff, so I think we'll start recording it this year," drummer Dominic Howard told KROQ over the weekend. "If we can get something out this year, that would be great, but definitely next year."

The group's frontman, Matt Bellamy, told Rolling Stone in December that the group had begun working on the follow-up to its 2012 album The 2nd Law shortly after it played the Rome Olympic Stadium – a performance it later put out as a CD-DVD. At the time, he said he thought the band might want to take a backto-basics approach with it. "I have this strong feeling that the next album should be something that really does strip away the additional things that we've experimented with on the last two albums, which is electronics, symphonics and orchestral work and all that kind of stuff," he said. "I kind of feel like it will be nice to reconnect and remind ourselves of just the basics of who we are."

Neil Young's Pono Kickstarter Raises Over $6 Million

The Kickstarter campaign to fund Neil Young's PonoMusic player reached its goal of $800,000 less than 10 hours after it went live. Now, the campaign has ended after earning nearly eight times that figure. It is officially the third highest-funded campaign in Kickstarter history. The campaign closed out at over $6 million on April 15th with full backing on several pledges tied to rewards, including signature series Ponos bearing pre-loaded music and autograph inscriptions by Metallica, Tom Petty, Pearl Jam and, of course, Young. Two of the rewards for the top-priced $5,000 pledge levels – dinner and a VIP listening parties with Young in California and New York City – also sold out. In total, 18,220 people backed the campaign, pledging $6,225,354. Kickstarter's rules say that project organizers can keep money raised above and beyond the initial funding threshold. After years of planning, Young announced Pono in March at South by Southwest. The Pono music player and service allows users to listen to music at a much higher quality than the typical smartphone. To support his Kickstarter campaign, Young also recruited a number of his famous friends – including Beck, Norah Jones, Rick Rubin, Jack White, Arcade Fire, Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Beastie Boys’ Mike D, Elton John, Jackson Browne, Dave Matthews, Patti Smith, Kid Rock and Mumford & Sons’ Marcus Mumford – to appear in a video and offer testimonies to the player's sound quality.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in March, Young said he was not surprised by people's reactions to Pono. "It's been pretty predictable, because I'm a musician and I know how musicians feel about sound," he said. "The record companies made some bad choices and did not realize how big this tech [MP3s] was going to be. And when that happened, there was no alternative to the cheap sound. . . We're going to be able to play records back just like the artists made them — with absolutely no magic sauce, no DRM, no encoding, decoding, none of the things that screw with the sound and make it an intellectual property." The player has a suggested retail price of $399 and contains 128 gigabytes of memory, which can store between 1,000 and 2,000 highresolution songs. The device will also accept memory cards to hold more music and playlists.

Miley Cyrus Postpones U.S. Tour Over Extreme Allergic Reaction

Miley Cyrus has postponed the remaining U.S. dates for her Bangerz tour after falling ill from an allergic reaction to antibiotics. The Associated Press reports that seven shows have been rescheduled, and the tour will resume on August 1st with a stop in Uniondale, New York. Cyrus was hospitalized on April 15th and placed on medical rest by her doctors, forcing her to cancel shows in Kansas City and St. Louis, Us Weekly reports. She had canceled her Charlotte, North Carolina show the previous week because of what was reported at the time to be a flu-like illness. "Miley was suffering from a sinus infection during her tour," said an official statement that Cyrus posted to Twitter on Thursday. "She was prescribed the antibiotic Cephalexin which she's now suffered an allergic reaction to. This type of extreme reaction can last from five to 27 days in these types of cases. She will remain hospitalized and is under a doctor's care until we see some improvement in her condition and is asking for your compassion and privacy at this time. Miley is devastated about missing shows and possibly disappointing her fans." Cyrus is still scheduled to kick off the European leg of her tour on May 2nd in Amsterdam. Her rescheduled U.S. tour dates will run between August 1st and August 14th, with two additional shows in Pittsburgh and Chicago.

If you are able to see your musical idols in concert as a child and then, are talented enough to join them onstage years later, you might have to pinch yourself to make sure you are not in a dream. That's the reality for singer/songwriter ZZ Ward. ZZ spent some time with Full Access Magazine to talk about her career, her current tour and also about those special moments where the fan in her comes out when she is in the company of select musicians. "I've been touring so much. I love touring, like the part of the tour of being in a different city every night for two months. Sounds kinda fun, but it's exhausting. So, that's exactly how it is; fun and exhausting," ZZ said. "I love my craft and I love performing. I love meeting my fans and I think when you tour as much as I've toured as a new artist, you learn pretty quickly what you need to get by. I feel like I'm an athlete. When I'm on the road, people come to see me perform every night and I think people expect me to sound good and to put on a good show. I have a pretty strong voice, so you learn how to take care of yourself on the road. You get a system down, so i kinda have that system down." "I have opened for Johnny Lang. Johnny is cool and so nice. I actually watched him before I was an artist, when I was in Oregon, I went to his concert. Then I ended

5

by Bob Cheesman

up opening for him. It's funny how things work like that. The same thing with Amos Lee. I saw him about five years ago in concert and now I'm going on tour with him," ZZ added. "I don't know if I get star struck anymore because I have met so many people that are famous. I think that there's something fun about being star struck. I met Jakob Dylan and he said, ‘he loved one of my songs.’ I was like ‘What?! you know my song? You're Jakob Dylan.’ He knew who I was, it was a cool moment." As a young girl growing up in Oregon, ZZ acquired an appreciation for the Blues while listening with her parents. Her love for music and for her father inspired her to join her father's band at the age of 12. ZZ explains her start in music, as well as her early influences. "My dad was in the band and I thought he was cool. He sang and played music, and just made me feel like it was just a fun thing to do. I felt special when I was playing music," ZZ said. "We listened to the Blues, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, and a lot of back-porch Blues stuff. Later on, I opened for Buddy Guy and I'm going on with Eric Clapton; pretty awesome." A few years later, ZZ Ward moved to Los Angeles, where she was signed to her first record deal in 2009 with Boardwalk.

In 2012, she signed with Hollywood Records and released her debut album, Til the Casket Drops. Some of her music has been featured on such tv shows as ABC's Pretty Little Liars and MTV's Awkward. Lately, she has been making appearances on talk shows including The Queen Latifah Show, The Tonight Show and Good Morning America, among others. "It's been so fun. I think my favorite was Conan O'Brien, because he had me come over to the couch, which was really cool. I wasn't ready for it; that was pretty fun," ZZ said. "I just did Queen Latifah and then Craig Ferguson and they were so nice. It's so fun to be on those late night shows." ZZ has been touring all over the globe for the past few years. She is currently on her Last Love Tour with guests Grizfolk and the O'my's. When she first began touring, she felt pressure to try to connect with fans that had not heard her music before and fans who were at the show to see the headlining band. Gradually, her fan base would grow and she would take notice of fans singing along while she performed on stage. ZZ enlightened us on her growing fan base and on some early lessons learned while on the road. "I love touring. But you mess up and you learn from it. I screwed up when I first toured Europe. I did seven countries in seven days. I felt like I killed myself. I didn't know what was going on. I would say to the bus driver, ‘Are we gonna stop somewhere on the way and eat?’ He said ‘No, we are leaving in ten minutes. If you want something, you better get it now.’ We were in Paris and I didn't speak French and didn't know what to do. You just learn as you go," ZZ said. "It's a great feeling. A really great feeling to see the fans. It's the hardest when you first get started, because most of the time when you first start, you are opening for a band. A lot of people don't know who you are, so you are making fans," ZZ added. They are hearing you and thinking ‘I love this artist,’ but they don't know the words to the songs. They're not there to see you, so that's when the conditions are

really tough. When you don't have fans, it's a little more challenging. Now that I have fans, it's so fun. They sing all the lyrics louder than me; it's a blast!" Having traveled all over the world, ZZ picks some US cities as her favorite places to play. Most of the shows are lively, although sometimes ZZ admits she has to put in a little extra effort to get the show kicking into high-gear. "At this point now, I'm looking for a big crowd; a pumped crowd. If they're not, then I have to get them there. It's our job as a band to get them to have a great time," ZZ said. "I like Denver a lot, but the altitude is so high, so you have to adjust. There's other places that are incredible, Minneapolis, Chicago, I can't really say that any one city hasn't been good to me. I have pretty loyal fans and it's always a party." ZZ Ward plans on bringing that party atmosphere and her high-energy show to the Big Guava Festival at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa on May 4th. Be sure to check it out! You can keep up with ZZ Ward on Facebook, Twitter and on her website www.zzward.com.

“Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour” by Cirque du Soleil combines Michael Jackson’s music and choreography with Cirque du Soleil’s signature performance style. The show unfolds Michael Jackson’s artistry and captures the essence and soul of the world-renown king of pop. The show is written and directed by Jamie King, who is the leading concert director in pop music today. The show features 49 international dancers, musicians and acrobats. I talked with Ravi Best, an accomplished trumpet player, who is a part of the extensive production. Ravi Best is from Brooklyn, New York and a graduate of Howard University with a Bachelors of Arts in Music Therapy, along with a Masters of Music from New York University. He described how his career started at a young age. “I started playing the trumpet at the age of 12. I have been doing that my entire life. I was very fortunate to grow up in a home where my father was always playing the heck out of the stereo, so I grew up with great influences of jazz and classical and R&B. That really influenced my desire to play music.” The Immortal World Tour features more than 35 of Michael’s songs. Best has always had the ambition and dreams to be a performer, but he never expected to be playing on this level. “I think from an early age, I always had the dream of performing, and touring the world and playing music, but obviously having an opportunity like this to play with basically Michael Jackson’s last band; that’s

7

something so far beyond, you would never conceive that kind of idea. I never thought, ‘Wow I would perform with this level of musicians, this caliber, and to be connected to this huge legacy that’s such a part of our culture’.” Ravi has toured or recorded with some of the industries top artists including: Queen Latifah, David Byrne, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Jay-Z, Whitney Houston, and many more. When asked if the path was paved for him during his career, he responded, “As an artist you’re always developing, always trying to get better, always trying to achieve the next goal. I’m always thankful for every opportunity that I’ve had. And I do feel those opportunities do send you to the next step, because you never know what connections your going to make and what performance or situation, you always learn and grow. You’re always striving for the next thing, the higher thing. We can always grow, we can always get better, and there’s always such great music out there to play. So I’m always working towards that.” The show has been on tour for two and a half years. The creation process for the show, as a whole, was a year and a half in the making. The first year was spent with all the creators in the room; the members, the cast crew, and the artists, figuring out what they wanted the show to be. Then there was another four months with the original cast of the show before it was premiered. To showcase Michael’s voice

and support the cast, Musical Director Greg Phillinganes handpicked a group of musicians. The show contains a full band, including horns and an electric cello. Best described how he was given the opportunity to be apart of the show, and credits it to the power of networking. “I was sought out. In all businesses, networking connections are very vital and so one of my best friends was a previous trumpet player who was on this tour. They were looking for someone, and he put together all the music, and was in charge of hiring all the musicians. He reached out to one of my best friends who is Taylor Swift’s musical director and he said, ‘I need someone for this gig’ and asked if he knew people he would like. My friend said, ‘you need to call my friend Ravi, he would be perfect for this.’ It was through that connection that they were able to get in contact with me and we started going from there.” Best has performed on Broadway in shows like Annie, Anything Goes, La Cage Aux Folles, Chicago, The Color Purple, among others. He describes being apart of the Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour as the most challenging tour, because he needed to learn choreography as well as combine his musical talents. “There’s challenges in different ways obviously; music in itself can be very challenging. Or let’s say, you go to a show like this where I had to learn how to dance ‘Thriller,’ that for me was a first. I’m used to learning music per say, but having them together, music and choreography, that is an extra challenge. But I love that, having done various Broadway shows where I have had to do a little bit of that too. That little extra, added thing of learning how to do actual choreography is a little bit of an extra challenge, but it’s great fun. I get paid to play great music and dance ‘Thriller.’ What’s better than that?” Best described his expectations for the show; “I was very excited, basically because I just

grew up with his music and listened to it my whole life. As a trumpet player, hearing all of those great horn lines and things, I was really excited to play all of that. Also, seeing some of the Cirque du Soleil shows and learning ‘Thriller,’ I think I was really excited about the whole idea of being part of this huge show that’s like a huge Michael Jackson concert. It’s really the best chance you have to actually witness what it would be like to actually play with Michael. Unfortunately, I didn’t have that opportunity to be a part of that, but this is the next best thing. I was really excited about it so I think my expectation was ‘I’m getting ready to play some of the greatest music ever, music that has impacted so many peoples lives,’ I think I was really excited about that.” by Lee Ann Leach While touring, the performers and musicians perform multiple shows per week. Best described that in “each city they have a sound check, which is similar to a rehearsal. At that point, we will tidy some things and see what needs to be looked at, so that we keep everything in tune.” The show ends with a song Michael often chose to end his concerts, “Man in the Mirror.” Best describes the importance of this song and how it’s dedicated to Michael’s legacy. “Michael Jackson’s music and the message of his legacy, I feel is so powerful. His music was about love and compassion and uniting all people all over the world. No matter what your background is or what you gain from his music, it was always about love and bringing people together. I hope people coming to see the show walk away remembering that message. I think it’s really appropriate that ‘Man in the Mirror’ is the final song in our show and its talking about changing the world. I think being a musician, the power of music is such an amazing thing. I think coming to the show, people will be able to hear that spirit that Michael was trying to give to the people, through his music.”

When thinking of iconic comedy-teams, many names come to mind: Laurel and Hardy; Wilder and Pryor; Matthau and Lemon to name a few. Some have had successful runs either on-stage, in film or on television. None have had both the success and the influential impact achieved by Cheech and Chong. Tommy Chong recently talked with us at Full Access Magazine, where he reflected on his career, his partnership with Cheech Marin and...well, marijuana. Famously known as a "stoner" in all of his film and tv roles, Chong is very passionate when discussing both the legalization of and the medicinal uses for marijuana. In 2012, after being drug-free for three years, Chong announced that he had been battling prostrate cancer. Currently, Chong says he is cancer free and believes that marijuana has played a huge role in his recovery. He talks of his recovery and of the possibility of legalization one day. "It was legal at one time; it was always considered a medicine by the Chinese. The reason it was made illegal was for profit. Even right now, they are having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that marijuana is good for pain-control because it heals the wound," Chong said. "Healing is always the best kind of pain-control in any kind of injury. The pharmaceutical companies and the alcohol companies and the agricultural

11

by Bob Cheesman

industry all see the writing on the wall, that marijuana can take a lot of them out permanently. The cancer industry alone is very nervous because they're finding really good results with cannabis oil in fighting cancer." "Chemo and radiation; that's a multi-billion dollar business that will go down the drain if everybody gets a hold of that knowledge; and they are. Cancer doctors are realizing that their glory days of chemotherapy and radiation are coming to a close," Chong added. "I am cancer free. Yes...it's a combination of cannabis oil, diet and exercise. I had to eliminate sugar, alcohol and meat from my diet totally." While growing up in the Canadian city of Vancouver in the 1960's, Tommy Chong was trying to make a living as a musician. While he was in-between bands, he decided to start a comedy show at his family's niteclub. One of his comedic partners was Cheech Marin. "When I was in my late thirties, my family had a night club in Vancouver. I got fired from Motown and I was trying to put a band together. I ended up meeting Cheech and I put an improvisational troupe together. I was directing at first, and then I got on stage...my first laugh was kinda like getting into a new car. I thought, "whoah, this is fun!" I had another partner and we did all the heavy lifting; all the main jokes. Cheech

was kinda like the understudy," Chong recalled. "When the group broke up, Cheech was the only one left that wanted to pursue comedy. So we put a band together and our first gig, we did all comedy and no music. So that's when I saw the writing on the wall." "I thought, all we had to do now was get discovered. So we stayed together and struggled for a year and then we made it. We stayed on anybody's couch we could; we really struggled. There were no comedy stores back then, so we went on between folk singers and we got a following. Then we got signed and did some comedy records and the rest is history." Cheech and Chong achieved early-career success with the releases of their first five comedy albums in the early 1970's and multiple Grammy Award nominations. This led to the release of the 1978 cult-classic film, Up In Smoke. "That was a landmark film that changed Hollywood and to be a part of that was quite an honor. When you try movies and you get a hit, then you're blessed. That was our first movie out of the gate and it was a huge, huge hit," Chong said. "It was quite thrilling. Most of the writers and producers of sitcoms now tell me they grew up with our movies. So it's been a big influence on some of today's shows." The duo went on to star in five films over the next five years, four of which were directed by Chong. The duo experienced some "creative difficulties" and split soon after the release of their album, Get out of my Room, in 1985. Over the next several years, the pair went on to achieve success individually. Cheech would co-star in films like Tin Cup and on the tv show Nash Bridges. Chong found mostly guest-starring roles on tv until he got a call to join the cast of That 70's Show in 1998. A role that would last over four years and give the show a huge boost in ratings. Chong recalls his role on that show, along with two new shows he is currently working on. "That 70's Show was having a problem with their ratings, so they called me in to do a little guest shot. They kinda knew what

they were doing. It was a perfect role for me. I didn't have to do the lead, I was the comic relief...the stoner. It worked out really well," Chong explained. "It helped the show a lot and gave the show more credibility. Before I got there, nobody was a real pothead...when I got there it legitimized their attempts. I just shot a bit-part on The Millers and a bit-part on Raising Hope. I'm being a goodwill ambassador for pot." Cheech and Chong would stay apart for the better part of twenty years before teaming up again. This time for a comedy tour in 2008. The duo is currently working on a new movie with a release aimed at 2015. "It's been pretty good...we've been apart longer than we were together, so it's like starting over again. It's good, you know, there's no down-side to it at all. Especially now, we got weed legal and we are going to go about getting immigration legal. That's going to be our next push. I think our movie will have something to do with the immigration problem," Chong said. "Right now, we're doing less and less shows because we are working on the movie. There's no name for it yet, probably Cheech and Chong Up in Smoke thirty years later. Cheech stipulated that he didn't want to work under my direction anymore." Be sure to check out Cheech and Chong's upcoming movie next year and follow them on their website, on Facebook and on Twitter.

The Winery Dogs consists of Richie Kotzen (Vocals and Guitar), Billy Sheehan (Vocals and Bass), and Mike Portnoy (Drums and Vocals). These three names have come together to combine their musical talents and create a fantastic rock ‘n’ roll sound. Last year, they released a self-titled debut album that has had a great fan response. They also have had a world tour and have started touring again. I had a chance to talk with Portnoy about their debut album, his drumming style, and touring. The idea for creating The Winery Dogs started in 2011 by Sheehan and Portnoy when they were creating music with another guitarist and songwriter, but it did not work out. After that, a mutual friend, Eddie Trunk, suggested the two contact Kotzen to see if he was interested in joining the band. Portnoy says, the three of them clicked instantly. “The three of us have a lot in common musically and personally. When we got together last year, Richie and I worked together, and Richie and Billy worked together, so there were some individual relationships already built in. As far as making music, it happened relatively quickly. The three of us immediately felt the chemistry, so we decided to forge ahead and create a real band.” The members of the band all have extensive musical history. Kotzen was apart of Poison, and Mr. Big. Sheehan was a member of Mr. Big, Steve Vai and David Lee Roth. And

13

by Corrina Drost

Portnoy was a co-founder of the metal band Dream Theater. The band’s album and performances feature a lot of diversity with a combination of their unique talents. Portnoy says the combination of their talents sets them apart. “We have three guys with three extensive individual histories that make together one. It’s kind of like 1+1+1=1. We didn’t want to make a band where any of the three of us came together to carry the load, we share the weight and the input. I think what sets us apart is what some people call “supergroup,” but I think in this case the sum is greater then all its parts. I think what we make together is special and unique.” The band has had a great fan reaction since their formation. In 2013, the band toured in South America, Japan, Europe, and the US and was very well received. The bands self-titled album sold over 10,000 copies. Portnoy attributes their fan success to their talents. “Well, its good music, its good songs with good musicians, and most times those don’t always go hand in hand. Sometimes you have a band with great musicians that can’t write good songs. Sometimes, you have someone who can write great songs, but can’t really play their instruments. With The Winery Dogs, you kind of get the best of both worlds.” Portnoy says, he adapts to each band he is apart of and changes his drumming style to suit the needs of the band. “I play very

differently for every band I am apart of. Dream Theater called for very progressive over-the-top drumming, Avenged Sevenfold called for more aggressive metal drumming, Flying Colors calls for more restrained, and The Winery Dogs calls for old school classic style drumming like in the name of John Bonham or Ian Paice. I’m very comfortable with all of those different styles.” On who has inspired his drumming style, Protnoy credits John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Neal Peart. Their self titled album, which was released last year, features 12 songs. Portnoy commented on the creation of the album. “I would say about 75 percent of the songs on the album were written collectively, with all three of us shaping it and contributing to it. Then, the other 25 percent of the time was someone bringing in an idea, or (even) an existing song. Then we would work on that. But for most of them, the bulk of the work was collectively in the room, on the spot.” Portnoy says the inspiration for the album and songs “comes from each other.” He added, “We just play and inspire each other. All three of us have a lot of respect for each other’s musical past and I think we just enjoy playing with the best in the business.” Portnoy shared that the song, “You Saved Me,” off their debut album, was the song that meant the most to him. “I wrote those lyrics to thank my wife for standing by my side these past couple of years after I left Dream Theater. There was a lot of turmoil both privately and publicly and she was completely supportive these past years. I wanted to write a song that thanked her.” With a busy schedule, Portnoy says he is thankful that he is able to balance his career and his personal life. “My family is very used to me touring, because its been over 20 years now. So they are very understanding

of touring and my schedule, and they are very supportive of it and thank God. I know a lot of musicians that have a struggle with that balance. Luckily for me, I have a family that gets it and supports me.” A Deluxe edition of the album was just released in April 2014. The Deluxe edition is a two-CD special edition that includes a disc of ten live tracks from Japan. In addition, there will be a deluxe special box set called Dog Treats, which includes the two-CD special as well as a bonus CD of all the demos from before the album was made. It also includes a DVD of all the music videos and exclusive footage, and a studio diary by Portnoy. For this year, Portnoy says they will be focusing on touring.“We are going to be on tour for most of this year. Right now, we are scheduled for April through the end of the summer, so that’s our focus. That’s what were going to be doing pretty much this year, and once that is done, we will take a little break and then work on the next record to be released early 2015.” When asked what else he would like to do on his own or with the band, he joked, “Juggling blueberries on the top of a school bus at ninety miles an hour.” He added, “At this point, I feel incredibly blessed and fulfilled. I’ve won every drum award that I can ever dream of winning. I played on every stage in every part of the world that I have ever wanted to play. I’ve toured with almost every band that I would want to tour with. At this point, my goals and my dreams are strictly that of musical inspiration. I have already achieved every material thing I had wanted to achieve. At this point, it’s all about the musical fulfillment, working with musicians and artists that I respect, and making music that moves me and inspires me. That’s what point I’m at in my life.”

The Winery Dogs will be performing at the Largo Cultural Center, in Largo, on Thursday, May 15th. Showtime is scheduled for 7:30pm. General Admission tickets can be purchased on the Largo Cultural Center’s website or box office for only $24.50 in advance or $29.50 at the door. Full Access Magazine

A force to be reckoned with in country music is Soul Circus Cowboys. SCC, made up of five awesome musicians including the founder and lead singer Billy McKnight, drummer Jason Alfano, singer and bassist Michael Bach, guitarist and third part harmony Terry Cole and guitarist Stephen Haendiges. When McKnight had come back from Nashville, he began a search for Tampa's best musicians and found these five gentlemen. "I was looking for two skilled guitarists and minimum 3-part harmony and I needed to find a drummer. I wanted that edge. I wanted that slam dunk. Each player is what I went out looking for, and over the years it has worked out pretty good," says McKnight. "In 2009, SCC formed and we had our first start. We started writing songs and our first single was "Lay It Down." We recorded that in Nashville and had a video that got on Great American Country and Country Music Television. It got a good portion of the country aware of us. It got the radio aware of us, and we started to grow fans outside of Florida. That is how it started and here we are now, almost 5 years later," McKnight says. Five years later, these five guys have released their newest album, That's the Way We Roll. Their music is such an incredible blend of country and southern rock. "We have a ballsy, southern rock/country band, and that is SCC," says McKnight.

by Victoria Rapp

SCC's music is something you can put on and know you are going to have a good time. It goes with every part of your life and you can hear it in the music that these guys are just having a blast during every minute of it. “We are seasoned. We have been around. We are taking influences from rock, southern rock and country. We have done the cover scene and the favorite rock and roll, heavier music, and country. The five guys I got are influenced heavy," says McKnight. You can hear these influences come out in their songs and the blend of the styles is clear. Another thing about SCC that is very clear, is their Tampa loyalty. McKnight's Tampa roots are what motivated him to find musicians in the Tampa area and to be able to start a band making music including Tampa's unique style. "It is in the way we do things, in our own little towns. What you eat, the lifestyle in Tampa; it is different and we are all connected that way," says McKnight. Fans understand that. They have their own little towns and they know how they work. It allows SCC to connect with their fans through their hometown love to others with that same love for their hometowns. They make sure to include those feelings and those moments in their music. They are writing for their own little town. "That is what keeps it real,

the lyrics are honest," says McKnight. "You can always talk about your roots, like when Kid Rock talks about Detroit. We will always have something about where we are from, in some way. We are proud to say we are from Tampa. Our goal is to be national and play cities and be on as many radio stations, but we are proud to say we are from Tampa Bay and we will always stick to that." Knowing that these five guys have only been playing together for the past five years seems crazy when you listen to how well they all sound together. "It is unforced and natural to perform together. It is a unity. I was just telling Bach his harmony is getting on me over the years, so if I do a triplet on a word instead of staying, he makes that move with me. It's a tightness, like a glove, that just fits. It is a signature fit. My singers are on me like white on rice and it is badass to have that. We work a lot and we still go into the rehearsal room and always bring something new to the people who come out constantly to see us. SCC is still following after that goal of being a national band, playing anywhere and connecting with their fans. Excited about their newest record, getting it out to

the public and into the hands of old fans and new fans. They are working a lot and just moving forward seeing where this all will take them. All the while keeping their fans in mind. SCC is all about their fans, and they have felt very fortunate to not only have fans within Florida, but to have spanned across the country. "We can't do it without them," says McKnight. To hear more from Soul Circus Cowboys like their Facebook page. Go to their website www.soulcircuscowboys.com and listen to their music. Of course, next time they are in a town near you, check them out live. You will be in for an experience. "It is the amount of people who keep responding to us, that keeps us growing. We respect and appreciate everyone for doing that," says McKnight. Soul Circus Cowboys keep on working and keep on moving, and making a bigger name for themselves in the country music realm. Their unique blend of sounds that create this awesome southern rock vibe is taking them where they want to go. All the while, they keep true to their Tampa roots, to their fans and to themselves. Those are the most important things to hold on to in the music business.

Todd Terje It’s Album Time Olsen Records 3334f by Terry Canter

Though he's been DJing, producing and remixing for a decade now, Todd Terje is a man so anonymous, even he doesn’t care how you pronounce his surname. “I stopped correcting people many years ago," he recently told an interviewer, with a shrug. But the Norwegian producer's debut album is packed with personality, its retro-futuristic, cosmic-disco grooves forming a clear picture of Terje as life and soul of the party. The whole thing is wrapped in a cloak of daftness, from the cover art's illustration of a louche Terje, like an offcut from a Stella Artois advert, to the ridiculous title. In case you didn't get the message, the title track repeats the words, "It's album time, it's album time" ad nauseam, like a theme tune. Indeed, it feels as though the primary inspiration on Terje's work is that of the TV theme through the ages. The baroque keys, swirling disco strings and pensive synths of 'Leisure Suit Preben' are built for a Miami detective show, 'Delorean Dynamite' has the tense mood of the music from the big-money round on an ’80s daytime TV game show, and 'Swing Star Part I' evokes the synth-driven soundtracks of thriller maestro John Carpenter. Ironically, the one that sounds least like a TV theme is titled 'Inspector Norse'. The pace switches halfway through with a cover of Robert Palmer’s 'Johnny And Mary' that would have slipped easily on to the Drive soundtrack, with whispered guest vocals from Roxy Music legend Bryan Ferry. Odd, but by this point, not unexpectedly so. 21

Despite its apparent desperation to be considered a piece of fluff and nonsense, Terje's infectious electronic pop beds itself deep in the brain. Terje is one of the people Franz Ferdinand called on to assist with last year's surprisingly fresh 'Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action', and it's hard to imagine the band pilfering Snoop Dogg's 'Who Am I (What’s My Name?)' for 'Evil Eye' quite so brazenly without Terje egging them on. Applying that spirit to his own music, he's turned in an electronic album that’s full of character without resorting to robot costumes or Pharrell bloody Williams. So it's worth learning the following: it's pronounced ter-yeah, and it's his time now. The Birds of Satan The Birds of Satan Shanabelle Records gggff by Terry Canter

A baby gurgles over a clattering drum roll before nine minutes of dramatic metal riffage and hulking prog licks, and so begins the first album from The Birds of Satan, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins’ side project. This ambitious Queens Of The Stone Age flavoured opener, ‘The Ballad Of The Birds Of Satan’, is a strutting slice of Californian metal that’s strangely misrepresentative of the rest of the record. The six tracks that follow are much easier to digest, sharing Foos’ commercial guitar leanings while gleefully paying homage to Hawkins’ heroes Dio, Van Halen and Queen. Dave Grohl and Pat Smear both make cameos on the record, but high profile guests aren’t the album’s high point. That accolade goes to the gentle soft rock triumph of ‘Raspberries’, the shred-happy ‘Pieces of the Puzzle’ and the piledriving, ’70s-era Aerosmith ballad ‘Too Far Gone To See’.

EMA The Future’s Void City Slang gggff by Terry Canter

Erika M. Anderson’s second album is notably more austere than her 2011 debut, ‘Past Life Martyred Saints’. “I remember when the world was divided by a wall of concrete and a cube full of iron”, she hoots over the clank and clutter of ‘Satellites’, ‘The Future’s Void’’s industrial opener. Addressing Russian surveillance over its neighbouring former Soviet states – brutally relevant in light of the Crimean crisis – ‘Satellites’ instantly distances its creator from the grungy upstart of ‘Past Life…’ This time, EMA shuts the door on personal recollections of youth and romance and only one song here – ‘So Blonde’ – revisits her familiar trashy lo-fi sound. Instead, the former Gowns vocalist deals with universal themes of privacy invasion and technology’s ever-growing influence on human interaction. ‘Neuromancer’ attacks the share-all culture of social networking (“I know more than you do about the things that you do”), backed by a furious and metallic Nine Inch Nails rattle. ‘Solace’, meanwhile, has a bass-heavy techno undercurrent, with Anderson singing “We make constellations out of fallen stars” as though straining to see through the dense electronics. This shift to a starker, machine-led sound is in opposition to EMA’s easy way with a pop hook – a contrast that’s most effective on ‘Smoulder’, where her melodies scribble over the synthetic gridlines. These same melodies are given more freedom to roam on the sparse, string-tinged arrangement of ‘100 Years’, and they positively bloom amidst the swell of ‘3Jane’. The latter is a slow-burning torch ballad about the accelerated internet exposure she received

for her last album and ‘The Future’s Void’s most introspective song, containing the lament, “I feel like I blew my soul out across the interweb … it left a hole so big inside of me.” These pockets of soul bearing act as tangible moments of emotion amongst the austerity, but also serve to highlight the weightiness of their surrounding environment. EMA has blogged that to make this record she’d “avoided almost all contact with the outside world.” How paradoxical that she’s returned with her most outward-looking work to date. Sohn Tremors 4AD gggff by Terry Canter

Vienna-based producer SOHN keeps a shadowy profile. Since he emerged in 2012 with breakout single ‘The Wheel’, personal details about the rising 4AD signing have been kept to a minimum. Even he seems unsure of his identity on debut album ‘Tremors’. “Somebody better let me know my name,” he sings on brooding ballad ‘Artifice’ like a man lost inside his own mysterious aura. All 11 icy nocturnes here come soaked in dread, from the gently classical ‘Tempest’ to arresting piano anthem ‘Paralysed’. Away from the complex production, tracks like ‘Bloodflows’ show off SOHN’s gift for a disarmingly simple lyric. “My love, my love, my love don’t love me,” he croons over a beat James Blake would covet. The lumbering ‘Ransom Notes’ struggles to kidnap your attention, and ‘Lights’ ambles along with its synth noises that go nowhere. In a recent NME interview, SOHN said his secret talent was being able to solve Rubik’s Cubes. Like those puzzles, ‘Tremors’ is frustrating. But when the colours align it’s alluring and impressive.
