Happy children. Happy parents. A simple formula for a happy holiday. Easy… Actually, not easy at all. Despite the wealth of different places that offer special children’s services, it can still be difficult to find the holiday that is exactly right for your family. Somewhere that will occupy and engage a variety of ages, personalities and interests – while affording you the chance to unwind, relax and recharge. We want to help design your perfect holiday. We want you to depart with confidence, return with smiles, having had a fantastic time while away. At Abercrombie & Kent, we understand the kind of holidays that are great for children – the ones that offer the excitement and fun children crave while surreptitiously bolstering their education. And with so many years of experience in so many countries, not only are we able to suggest destinations that will fulfil your wishes in terms of accommodation, entertainment, activities and facilities, we also know which hotels and resorts are the best for children of particular ages – and why. We have tested them all. If you are looking for ideas and inspiration, read on. In this brochure we have highlighted some of our favourite destinations for families, focusing on why we think they will appeal. But this is just a taste – there is more to consider. When it comes to deciding exactly what you want, it is best to talk to us. We will listen to what you want, ask questions and discuss the options with you. Then we will set about crafting your dream family holiday.

PENGUINS NEAR SIMON’S TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

GROOTBOS

TSWALU KALAHARI Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa’s largest privately-owned luxury game reserve. Unlike many African reserves, Tswalu welcomes children and is the most brilliant and stimulating place for families. Tswalu’s Junior Ranger programme has been carefully designed to meet the interests of a broad age range. Activities include archery (where children make their own bow and arrow), spoor identification and casting, as well as tracking on foot. Children’s bush walks are hugely educational without ever feeling like school (and adults can join in if they wish).

CAPE GRACE Set on its own private quay in the heart of Cape Town’s famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, the Cape Grace is a newly redesigned boutique hotel that offers a perfect base for families to enjoy their time in Cape Town. Children are treated as VIPs from the moment they arrive, starting with a welcome gift and participating in story time and gingerbread men decorating each evening. Two Oceans Aquarium is easily accessible from the hotel, as is Boulders Beach, a sheltered beach in the Cape Peninsula and the only place in the world where you can swim freely with penguins.

GROOTBOS Voted ‘Best family hotel’ by Tatler, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a compelling family destination only two hours from Cape Town; here the children’s activities are more than just activities – they combine education and excitement in a wonderful natural setting. Located on the coast, this is one of the best places for whale watching in the world. There is also pony riding, flower safaris, bird watching and guided treasure hunts and the Play Ground, a special area near the stables where children can safely explore their natural surroundings and play with the Estate’s menagerie of pets.

KURLAND, GARDEN ROUTE Just a few miles from Plettenberg Bay, Kurland is ideally located on the Garden Route and offers endless activities to keep the family entertained. The 10 family suites have special loft rooms, specifically furnished for children and fitted with up to four beds, a play area and toys for children of varying ages. Throughout the day, riding, fishing and tennis are the active options, while more sedentary alternatives are on offer around the swimming pool or in the hotel spa. Children have their own swimming pool, a games room and their own Dining Conservatory. Highly experienced nannies are on hand to ensure parents have the chance to enjoy themselves too. KURLAND

HORSE RIDING SAFARI, ANT COLLECTION

SUN CITY

ANT COLLECTION, LIMPOPO PROVINCE Three hours north of Johannesburg, in the malaria-free area of Waterberg, Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill offer the choice of staying in the family homestead or in a bush camp. Both have heated swimming pools for use year-round. They specialise in horse-riding safaris and welcome children, offering play areas, toys and games, ponies, ranger-led ‘bug’ walks and family game-drives in open jeeps.

FUGITIVE’S DRIFT, KWAZULU-NATAL Taking children on a battlefield tour may not be an obvious choice, but the stories of the Anglo-Zulu Wars are recounted in a mesmerizing way and play perfectly to the bloodthirsty tendencies of most youngsters! Fugitive’s Drift has children’s tours that combine the battlefield with visits to Zulu villages and the chance to handle a Henry-Martini rifle and a Zulu assegai.

SUN CITY Children brought up on Disney may be unimpressed, but Sun City – better known for grown-up games such as blackjack and golf – can be a great stop on a family holiday, with many activities and adventures for all ages. Many of the hotels offer babysitting services and kid’s clubs, giving parents the chance to play…

MALA MALA A superb family destination, Mala Mala Private Reserve offers some of the best game viewing in Africa with large concentrations of free-roaming elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard and cheetah, not to mention the plain’s game. The Main Camp welcomes children of all ages with excellent amenities and activity packs – and specialises in child friendly and engaging safari programmes. A personal ranger will teach them all sorts of bush skills – from animal tracking to survivor skills – including finding water and practical uses of plants including the toothbrush and loo paper trees! Children will also be invited to participate in cooking an outdoor meal (after they have learnt how to make the fire), which parents are invited to enjoy.

BREAKFAST AT GIRAFFE MANOR

ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE, NAIROBI

GIRAFFE CENTRE & MANOR Established in 1979 in a bid to save the endangered Rothschild Giraffe, the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi has become an enjoyable stop on any Kenyan itinerary. With walkways built high above the ground that give you an eye to eye view with the giraffes, it is a perfect place to get to know these majestic creatures. For those who need to stay in Nairobi for the night, you can stay over in the Manor House and enjoy breakfast with the giraffes who are vying for your attention through the breakfast room window. You may even have them poking their head through your bedroom window.

ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE A charming experience for adults and children is an excursion to elephant orphanage in Nairobi. Set up and operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the orphanage cares for elephant and rhino calves, found abandoned or orphaned, some as young as one day old when rescued. The Elephant Keepers bond with their charges and replace the orphans’ lost family until such a time as the transition to rejoin a wild herd has been accomplished. A visit here is a wonderful opportunity to watch the playful young elephants interact with each other and their keepers as they are bottle fed.

HOT AIR BALLOONING There can be few experiences as magical and uplifting (no pun intended) as ballooning over the Masai Mara during the wildebeest migration. Floating through the calm dawn skies, the elevated panoramic view is exhilarating (children must be at least 12 years old).

TORTILIS CAMP Amboseli is best known for its unrivalled views of Kilimanjaro and the local elephant population – and Tortilis Camp is the perfect location to enjoy both. Located with spectacular views of Kilimanjaro, Tortilis is a luxurious camp consisting of 16 ensuite tents. It also has a private house that is perfect for a family, consisting of two bedrooms and a spacious sitting room with a veranda facing that wonderful view.

SABUK Sabuk is a remote luxury lodge in Laikipia overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River at a picturesque gorge. It is home to a variety of wildlife and its charm lies in the fact that its wilderness activities can be enjoyed either on foot or with horses or camels. Fishing, swimming in the river and a visit to a Laikipiak Maasai village in the nearby community group ranch are all possible. Two of the eight en-suite open-sided rooms are suitable for families, and ‘Eagle Cottage’ consists of two bedrooms with a sitting room and pool.

PRIVATE MOBILE CAMPING Your very own private tented camp set up solely for you in the heart of the Masai Mara or tucked away on the Laikipia plateau. The camp is set up to suit your requirements – just you in the bush, experiencing the very best of Africa in the traditional way, in total privacy. No compromises are made to your comfort or safety – your staff ensure you want for nothing.

A WARM WELCOME AT SANCTUARY STANLEY’S CAMP

SANCTUARY CHOBE CHILWERO RIVER CRUISE

SANCTUARY RETREATS Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero

Close to the border with Zambia lies Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero, from where you and your family can enjoy one of Africa’s largest concentration of elephants. The various children’s activities at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero include guided walking safaris within the grounds of the lodge to collect pods, leaves and seeds and to learn about tree identification, as well as croquet on the lawn and ‘make your own pizza’ with the camp chef. Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp

Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp is an intimate camp with magnificent views over the floodplains of the Okavango Delta. From the swimming pool, watch giraffe and other game march across the savannah. You might even catch a glimpse of rare wild dogs stalking the plains. One of the highlights of Stanley’s is ‘Living With Elephants’ where you and your children will have the magical opportunity to see the bush from an elephant’s perspective, as you walk in the gigantic footsteps of these charming characters. Sanctuary Chief ’s Camp

In the heart of the Moremi area of the Okavango Delta, Sanctuary Chief’s Camp sits silent among the glassy waters of the seasonal flood. Sited on the exclusive Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve, this camp has been seamlessly integrated into the environment of winding waterways, reedbeds, mopane woodlands and seasonal lagoons. Enjoy game viewing by vehicle, mokoro, or for the more adventurous family, view the game from a helicopter – with or without the doors on. SANCTUARY STANLEY’S CAMP, TENT INTERIOR

Your guide will accompany you throughout your stay, moving with you through the Kwando camps. Caring for the children continues beyond the game drive and in camp, thereby allowing parents plenty of time to be “off-duty” and relax. The programmes vary for each family and are based on the age and interests of the children. Generally, activities include spoor castings using spotlights, fishing, mammal, bird and plant identification, identifying night sounds and making greeting cards out of natural materials. In essence, the children are always either busy or asleep. And busy and happy children ultimately mean a relaxing holiday for their parents.

MOTSWIRI Motswiri Camp is located on the banks of the ancient Selinda Spillway in the remote and beautiful Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana. Here families can enjoy the camp’s exclusive riding and walking safaris across the 120,000 acres of the reserve. They are personalised for you and your children’s need and interests, among the open floodplains of the Okavango Delta and the riverine forests. Motswiri Camp was completely renovated in 2010 for the very best in comfortable luxury accommodation that has an extremely low impact on the surrounding environment.

FAMILY FRIENDLY CAMPS

SANCTUARY CHICHELE, SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK

Sanctuary Chichele and Sanctuary Zebra Plains

Start your Zambia family holiday in the famous Luangwa National Park. Sanctuary Chichele has an interconnecting room and two triple rooms that are ideal for families. Its family-friendly activities include tracking and trails, making African Masks with papier maché, making elephant dung paper, and toasting marshmallows by the camp fire. Alternatively, for children over 12 years old, stay at Sanctuary Zebra Plains and enjoy ‘walking safaris’ which are undoubtedly one of the most exciting ways to experience the sights, sounds and scents of the bush. Sausage Tree Camp

Fly down to the lower Zambezi where your children will not only be able to enjoy further game drives but also a canoe safari and the opportunity to go tiger fishing. Located here is Sausage Tree Camp, a camp that allows children from the age of 8 (they have to be over 12 years of age to go on walking and canoeing safaris). The camp’s Kigelia House is ideal for families, with two bedrooms, its own private guide and a private butler to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma

End your holiday at the magnificent Victoria Falls, where there are a host of activities for older children and teenagers, including rafting and bungee jumping. Stay at Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma where the various activities include tailor made child-friendly game drives with parents, a visit to Nakatindi School to spend time with the children there and take part in colouring competitions, and traditional clay and Plaster of Paris toy moulding. The animals, cars, houses, pots and other artifacts they have made can be taken home as a lasting souvenir.

THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA

PYRAMIDS AT GIZA, LIGHT SHOW

MURAL PAINTING AT THE TOMB OF NEFERTARI, VALLEY OF THE QUEENS

Though impressive enough to capture the imagination of most children, the Pyramids and the Sphinx can be spiced up by staying on to watch the early-evening light show. Tours inside the Pyramids themselves may be scary for very young children – add in some family focus by taking a break from history to indulge in a camel, donkey or horse ride.

CAIRO Cairo itself offers much to enthrall. The Egyptian Museum, home to Tutankhamun’s burial mask and all manner of mummies, is a guaranteed hit even with children not normally inclined to museums. For atmosphere and activity Khan El Khalili bazaar is well worth a visit and if your children are a little older, or you are looking for authenticity, then a short walking tour of Old Cairo is a wonderful way to absorb the essence of the city.

LUXOR Don’t miss Luxor, dubbed the world’s greatest open-air museum by virtue of its being home to an incredible one third of the greatest antiquities in the world. The highlights are the Valley of the Kings, where you’ll find the tombs of most of the pharaohs of Egypt of the New Kingdom, including Tutankhamun, and the Valley of the Queens and Artisans. The paintings of scenes from daily life in Ancient Egypt appeal to children and the ceremonial paintings you’ll see in the royal tombs are something that they can relate to and will recognise from their classroom.

TEMPLES & BALLOONS Luxor is also home to the sprawling Karnak temple complex – of Death on the Nile fame – with its imposing columns and ram sphinxes. Also popular are hot-air balloon flights over the west bank and forays into the small but exquisite Luxor Museum.

JERASH

LOCAL FAMILIES, DANA NATURE RESERVE

JERASH Jerash lies on a plain surrounded by hilly wooded areas and fertile basins. Conquered by General Pompey in 63 BC, the city’s golden age came under Roman rule. The site is generally acknowledged to be one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world and is best known for its imposing Roman Forum and mile-long Street of Columns – hence its epithet ‘City of 1,000 columns’.

DANA NATURE RESERVE Dana is all about appreciating the simpler things in life. Yet to say so does not do justice to the magic of the place. An overnight stay in the guest house at the unique Dana Nature Reserve is an opportunity for you and your children to see mountain gazelles and Nubian ibex. Here you can admire the spectacular viewpoints above Dana Village, explore the terraced gardens, meet local farmers and visit a traditional bakery. An easy two hour circular walk around the campsite area is an excellent route for bird-spotting, especially in the migration seasons. In the evening, enjoy dinner prepared and hosted by local women in one of the village houses. Dana offers a range of walks to key points of interest for all the family. The trails are clearly marked with intermittent piles of stones along the route, and can be hiked independently or with a guide. The peace and natural beauty of Dana is the perfect antidote to the jaw-dropping sights of Petra and Jerash.

DESERT NIGHTS CAMP Desert Nights offers a unique desert experience, 11km from Al Wasil in the Wahiba Sands region, just two hours drive away from Muscat. The rooms are set up as individual units in a Bedouin tent designed with a sitting room, bedroom, en suite bathroom and cosy sit-out with panoramic vistas across the golden sands. The camp has 24 double tented units and two family units which sleep four. Each tent is beautifully decorated and offers electricity and air-conditioning. There is an excellent restaurant and bar on site. The best thing about the camp however are the activities available: the barbecue dinners around the campfire, camel rides, dune top sunset drinks, quad biking, dune bashing and wadi surfing. This is a brilliant place for active families.

AL WAHA A warm welcome awaits families at Al Waha, nestled on the edge of a bay at Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa. ATHENS The city of Athens is dominated by the famous Acropolis with the Parthenon, which has stood for 2,000 years, along with the nearby Agora which formed the political heart of ancient Athens. Artefacts from excavations of Ancient Greece form the priceless collections of the National Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Benáki Museum. The ancient district of Plaka has now been transformed into one of the city’s most fascinating areas, full of markets stalls during the day, it comes alive at night with a huge array of restaurants and pavement cafes dotted around its many squares where the locals as well as visitors congregate in the balmy summer evenings.

HALKIDIKI For a sense of Greece’s rural identity, the unspoilt Halkidiki peninsula near Thessaloniki is definitely worth a visit. The deep blue waters of the Saronic Gulf reflected against the white sandy beaches provide an amazing contrast to the lush landscape filled with pine forests inland. Thessaloniki is the region’s capital and was once the second city of the Byzantine Empire. It is definitely worth a visit during your stay with its castle, the rotunda of St George with its fabulous mosaics, the Roman arch, the Palace of Galerius and the striking new Byzantine museum to be seen. The Archeological Museum is not to be missed as it contains a host of treasures. Or just wander around the ancient streets of this lively university city. THE PARTHENON, ATHENS

CRETE Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and home to many Greek myths and a rich and varied modern history. It provides the opportunity to visit the renowned ruins at Knossos Palace, the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, and thought to be the political centre of the Minoan civilization. Elounda is an area to the east of the island, and although it has a large number of hotels, is still traditional and has the fascinating Spinalonga Island, the former leper colony on its doorstep. The setting of the bestselling novel “The Island”, Spinalonga is a must see on any visit, its history both tragic and inspiring.

MYKONOS AND SANTORINI The island of Mykonos with its stark white buildings is graced with excellent beaches and a beautiful, colourful and cosmopolitan town. Its proximity to ancient Delos has made it the most popular island in the Cyclades. The most westerly of the Cyclades is Santorini, a volcanic island with its glamorous beauty associated with the misty tales of Atlantis. The white villages cling to towering cliffs where you can enjoy a sundowner in one of the world’s most enchanting settings.

PELOPONNESE The Peloponnese is home to a wealth of archaeological wonders: the Temples of Apollo and Octavia at Corinth; the renowned 4th century BC theatre at Epidavros, where concerts and plays are staged throughout the summer; and ancient Olympia, home to the original Olympic Games. However there is so much more to this region, including unspoilt beaches, traditional fishing villages and superb mountain ranges full of walking trails. The main town Nafplion, now a bustling and entertaining port, was shaped by the many struggles between the Turks and Venetians. The evidence of their occupations can be seen throughout the region in its architecture and cuisine.

WATERWAYS OF FRANCE The feeling of gentle exploration characterises barge cruises and makes for an excellent family holiday. The warm atmosphere and service provided by the English speaking crew combines to ensure a perfect inland cruising experience. All our featured barges are air-conditioned and boast wonderful sundecks and small spa pools. Each cruise includes a comprehensive programme of excursions and visits. They are a blend of cultural, historical and general interest, which complement the time spent drifting lazily along the waterways. The Vessels

The vessels featured are some of the most comfortable available. All barges have outside facing cabins with en suite facilities, drawers and wardrobe space and opening portholes or windows. Each has spacious saloon and dining areas, central heating, air-conditioning or cooling, and umbrella-shaded sun decks. Many have a small library, games and a music centre, while some carry bicycles for use on towpaths. Hotel barges are also available for exclusive charter by larger parties. Please note that barge hotels welcome children aged 12 or older. Younger ones are welcome if it is a charter booking or a special family departure.

FAMILY WALKING IN PROVENCE

EVIAN A part of France that is wholly unexpected, Evian Royal Resort is located on the shores of Lake Geneva and hidden under the Chablais and Bernese Alps. A palace originally built for royalty, this is now home to a glorious 42 acre estate complete with championship golf courses, spa and treatment rooms that use the local thermal waters, and a complimentary children’s club for children aged 3 – 16. This is the perfect location for a family break.

PROVENCE Provence lies directly between the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps and became a household name in 1991 when Peter Mayle’s book “A Year In Provence” was published. Just its name conjures up the swaying oleanders, olives glistening in the sun and the heavenly smell emanating from row upon row of deep purple lavender bushes. You think of a slower pace of life, a Sunday lunch under the shade of plane trees, a café crème at a sidewalk café, or a long walk through a forest of oak and chestnut trees – it is all about spending quality time with your family.

SOUTHWEST FRANCE The Southwest of France, including the popular regions of Gascony and Dordogne and the city of Bordeaux, stretches along the Atlantic Ocean from the mouth of the Gironde Estuary in the north to the Spanish border to the south. The Dordogne and Gascony have a love of bygone eras. You can visit prehistoric fortresses or explore the medieval villages and towns of Rocamadour, Perigueux, Sarlat and Cahors. The breathtaking scenery of this region is interlaced with gorges, green meadows, winding rivers, and vineyard strewn fields. The area around Bordeaux provides the perfect base for a family to tour around this rich and varied region.

COTE D’AZUR This richly varied region stretches broadly from Monaco in the east through to Marseille in the west, encompassing a beautiful landscape of medieval villages dropping down to the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Medieval inland castles and villages are easily reached from the Cote D’Azur and provide ample distractions when it may get too hot for the beach. Further west, the Var region is mountainous and untouched, providing many trails for hiking or biking.

FAMILY LOOKING OUT OVER FORUM ROMANUM, ROME

POMPEII & HERCULANEUM The extensive and varied ruins of Pompeii provide a rich insight into life at the time of the Roman Empire. There are theatres, thermal baths, shops and lavish dwellings, many of which have been incredibly well preserved. The excavations of Herculaneum stretch over a smaller area and yet are in a better shape than those in Pompeii. Many everyday objects were found as the sea town was destroyed by a super hot cloud of steam and mud, and only later covered with lava. This is a geological, historical and mythical adventure, all rolled into one.

ROME Rome is a heady blend of artistic and architectural masterpieces, classical ruins and extravagant baroque churches and piazzas. The city’s 2,700 years of history are on display everywhere, the term “living museum” has never been more appropriately used than with Rome. But more than just visiting the sights such as the Coliseum, our experts can arrange for your children to spend a morning at gladiatorial school, where they can learn the basic techniques of gladiatorial sword fighting. Or if they wanted something less active, less adversarial, why not get them to try their hand at pizza making classes. Nestled in the heart of Rome is the world’s smallest state, the Vatican City, home to the truly breathtaking Sistine Chapel, a sight defintely not to be missed.

VENICE Take time to explore the islands of the ecologically rich waters surrounding Venice, including a visit to Murano where they still make the world famous glass creations. Visit the golden mosaics of St Mark’s Basilica and paint your own Venetian mask – a favourite with many families – in one of the city’s most renowned studios. GONDOLAS IN VENICE

AMALFI COAST

THE AMALFI COAST The Amalfi coast is world-renowned with its magnificent coastal drives, beautifully positioned towns which not long ago were only accessible by sea, and a host of culinary delights. ‘Must sees’ are the cosmopolitan Amalfi coast; the marvellous islands; the Imperial Villa in Capri; the Royal Palace of Caserta with its splendid Italian gardens; Herculaneum and Pompeii, and the mighty Mount Vesuvius.

POSITANO Positano is one of these famous towns, nearly vertical in posture, and providing a breathtaking location for a villa break. The area is famous for its food, including spaghetti alle vongole (pasta with tomatoes and clams), cozze mussels, the infamous Napolitan pizza and a whole host of mouthwatering cheeses.

SORRENTO Sorrento is a beautiful, precariously-perched town, which sits along a cliff with a narrow ravine splitting it in two. The views are superb and the town is steeped in history, once being ruled by Spanish sovereigns, who loved this area for its abundance of fruit, fish, birds, meat and cheese.

DOLOMITES Situated in the south of the Alps, these romantic and magnificent peaks dominate the area. In the summer the snow gives way to Alpine meadows full of poppies, buttercups and other flowers that adorn the mountains. With a variety of activities for all levels, from hiking to toboganning, historical castles to villages, this area will suprise and delight.

ITALIAN ISLANDS When it comes to islands, Italy has refined and civilised the concept to transform natural beauty to a new level of sophistication and style. Sicily and Sardinia, two such individual islands, with villas, monasteries and castles transcending the ages have a timeless sense of style with comprehensive modern spas and plentiful watersports facilities.

GUESTS ON GLACIER BY HELICOPTER

THE HIGHLANDS BY HELICOPTER The ultimate way for your family to see the amazing landscape of Iceland is to take an exhilarating helicopter ride into the highlands. Flying over the massive glacier Langjokull and over the narrow canyon of the glacier river Hvita, you will get to see Gullfoss waterfall from the air. You will circle around the volcano Hekla. It is still very active, erupting most recently in 1970, 1980, 1981 and in 1991. The last eruption started on 26th February in 2000 and lasted for 12 days; the lava from this eruption covers approximately 18 km2. Next you will visit Landmannalaugar, a natural pearl, hidden in the highlands of Iceland. There are hot and cold springs all around, amazing lava fields and outstanding scenery. One of the most notable characteristics of this area are the Rhyolith Mountains, with their multi-coloured shapes and sizes. You will land by one of the natural hot springs to explore the area with your mountain guide. After an energetic morning’s walking, lunch will be served next to one of the springs in the middle of the lava field.

GLACIER WALKING Driving along the south coast you will see many waterfalls, black sandy beaches, mountains and lava formations. Iceland offers a wonderful chance for your children to enjoy glacier walking on the Solheimajokull glacier tongue which extends down from its mother glacier, Myrdalsjokull, Iceland’s fourth largest. Wearing crampons you will walk onto the ice field where a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses awaits.

SNOWMOBILING Snowmobiling is full-on action. It takes place either on one of the spectacular glaciers or on the expansive heaths all depending on weather conditions. Be prepared for extreme adrenaline adventure teamed with the most beautiful sights. Many describe it as a reminder of how small we are compared to nature.

ATV’S/QUAD BIKING This trip offers amazing scenery that will take your breath away. Scary mountains, raw nature, lots of dirt and wet weather, extreme off road conditions – this is our playing field with established tracks that guarantee fun for everyone. Going over the rough terrain doesn’t take much effort for the super sized quads. This is a family sport and no danger whatsoever in the presence of our expert guides.

RIVER BED DRIVING The whole family will love the excitement of climbing aboard a superjeep, heading off to explore the country, crossing raging rivers and torrents to reach a mountainous peak, from where you’ll walk to your own private barbeque lunch with the most magnificent views imaginable.

HORSE-TREKKING Icelandic horses are naturally calm in temperament and ideal for children to build their riding confidence and access the remoter parts of the country that are not accessible by car or on foot.

GALAPAGOS Undoubtedly the highlight of any family holiday to Ecuador, the Galapagos are exceptional and a truly unparalleled wildlife experience. There is so much to enthrall young minds. The vividly coloured blue, yellow and red Sally Lighfoot Crab, marine iguanas lounging superciliously on the rocks and spitting salt. The bizarre courtship dance of the albatross, the mating spectacle of the frigate bird males who puff up their chests into a large resplendent scarlet pouch in order to attract a mate, and the whistling and honking of blue-footed boobies. Both children and adults will be taken aback by the fearlessness of the birds, so tame you will have to walk around them. Perhaps most memorable will be the experience of snorkeling with sea lions, coming face to face with them and blowing bubbles at them under water only for the sea lion to do it back to you. The best way to explore this Equatorial archipelago is by expedition cruise. You stop ashore each day for fascinating encounters with wildlife with an expert naturalist guide, many of them who specialise in leading family groups, who will show you these incredible islands in small personal groups. As well as the incredible flora and fauna of the Galapagos there are zodiac trips, kayaks and snorkeling to keep the family entertained. We recommend in particular the Eclipse, a luxurious vessel which carries just 48 passengers and all rooms have a sea view. There is an elegant dining room or you can eat alfresco. The special 7 day family departures welcome children from 5 years old. Children over 10 are able to join mainstream departures.

CARLISLE BAY, ANTIGUA

BEACH DINING, CARLISLE BAY, ANTIGUA

CARLISLE BAY, ANTIGUA Antigua is a natural choice of island for families holidaying in the Caribbean, with regular, direct flights from the UK and allegedly 365 beaches – one for each day of the year. The island has two 18 hole golf courses and the diving is excellent. Carlisle Bay is our favourite Antiguan resort for families. Stylish, luxurious and contemporary, it is situated on the unspoilt south coast of the island on a stunning secluded beach, it is completely child friendly. Its Cool Kids’ Club, offers a wealth of activities for children aged from six months to 12, with a weekly activity programme for different age groups to ensure plenty of variety. Children receive a welcome pack and their own robe on arrival. And if that’s not enough, children’s movies are shown on a daily basis in the screening room. While children are happily occupied, adults can relax in the knowledge they are in excellent hands and concentrate on enjoying the fabulous Blue Spa or the windsurfing, sailing, tennis, yoga and Pilates on offer. Mountains extend from one side of the island to the other, the perfect environment for cultivating Jamaica’s famous coffee. The rivers, waterfalls and rain forests of the island are home to over 250 species of birds. Half Moon, Montego Bay is a self-contained resort as famous for the panoply of sports and activities it offers families as it is for is refinement, superb dining (six restaurants) and laid back ambience. Set in 400 acres, its tropical grounds are dotted with rooms, suites and villas. It has its own golf course, two miles of private golden beach and its own lagoon complete with friendly dolphins. Scuba, kayaking, para-sailing, deep sea fishing and glass-bottomed boat cruises are all on offer here while on land there is tennis, squash, riding – and the Fern Tree Spa for relaxing therapies. For young children, there is the Anancy Children’s Village to keep them happily occupied.

GRACE BAY CLUB, TURKS & CAICOS Located at the southern tip of the Bahamas chain, the Turks & Caicos islands offer spectacular white sand beaches, turquoise sea and very friendly people. With a coral reef stretching 200 miles underwater, this region is heaven for scuba divers and snorkellers. Only 8 of the 40 islands that make up the group are inhabited. Grace Bay on Providenciales is situated on what is often described as the most beautiful beach in the world. It is a genuine family resort offering plenty of choice for adults and children alike, with numerous pools, tennis courts, golf, riding, spa and Kid’s Town, which offers ‘Very Important Kids’ packages for youngsters aged from infants up to 17. With full and half day excursions – kayaking, snorkelling, catamaran sailing, scuba diving, flamingo viewing and cave safaris, we think the resort is particularly well suited to families with teenagers.

CHIANG MAI The surrounding area this ‘rose of the north’ is blessed with a pleasant year round climate, charming people and exciting shopping. It is the gateway to the ancient Lanna kingdom and perfect for exploring the mountainous north of the country and the ethnic minorities that still inhabit the area. A visit to the elephant camp is a must: here you will be taken through a private mahout training course to learn the basic commands required to guide an elephant through its daily tasks. The real fun comes when you discover the artistic side of these gentle giants with the opportunity to paint together and take home the painting that you created.

CHIANG RAI Chiang Rai is well known for its stunning mountain scenery and is home to several different ethnic minorities that began to arrive in Thailand at the end of the 19th century (some much earlier) when forced out of their native Myanmar, China and Tibet by civil war and political pressures. The main hill tribe groups in this region are the Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, Akha and Mien, each still retaining its own fascinating customs, religion, clothing and language. The lush green scenery makes for great walking in this region or alternatively you can enjoy the scenery from the vantage point of an elephant.

SARAWAK, NR KUCHING, SANTUBONG, CULTURAL VILLAGE BIDAYUH

SABAH Sabah is perfect for families, especially for those with a love for nature, adventure and exploration. Danum Valley is a protected area with guided walks and for those with a head for heights, canopy walkways offering an elevated and fascinating view of the rainforest. Tropical Selingan Island off the north-eastern coast is a sanctuary for endangered turtle, and in the area of primary forest at Sepilok, the Orang-utan Sanctuary is an amazing place to learn about and see the Orang-utan at first hand. The proboscis monkey, with its distinctive long nose, is endemic to Borneo and best observed when cruising on the Managol or Kinabatang Rivers. The caves at Suan Lumba hide an intricate cave system inside Gomantong Hill, the largest limestone outcrop in the area. A world away from the jungle, enjoy the serene retreat of inviting beaches at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru on the northern tip of Sabah overlooking the South China Sea. You can be as active or relaxed as you wish, taking advantage of the abundance of things to see and do – or simply spend your time at Chi, the resort’s signature spa that typifies its namesake.

SARAWAK Nearly half of Sarawak’s population is made up of various indigenous Dyak and Orang Ulu groups such as the Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit and Penan tribes. The Iban live along the Rajang River in the Batang Ai where you can embark on a longboat for a day of exploring the Ulu Ai River and its longhouse communities. Their welcoming ceremony of music, gongs and warrior dancing is not to be missed, nor is a taste of the locally brewed rice wine or an attempt to ‘fire’ a blow-pipe, an early tribal hunting weapon which is rarely used nowadays.

The dipterocarp forest here has over 200 species of trees per hectare, some of which are the oldest and tallest in the world. The wildlife is exceptional with some of world’s most exciting animals – proboscis monkeys, Orangu-tans, Asian elephants, and 124 species of mammals, 72 reptiles, 56 amphibians and over 325 species of bird. A big favourite with children is walking through the treetops on the 100-foot high canopy walkway. The guides are used to working with children and will help them get the most out of the area’s incredible diversity of flora and fauna. SNORKELLING, GREAT BARRIER REEF

EAST COAST Sydney Such is the breadth of its attractions that you could never set forth beyond the city’s boundaries and still have an amazing holiday. Some of our favourite family activities are the Harbour Bridge Climb (not for the faint-hearted and only for those over ten years old), spending time at Darling harbour (including the Aquarium and Maritime Museum), a day at Taronga Zoo (and for those who want to experience the ‘roar and snore’, an overnight in luxury safari tents in the zoo itself). Or learn to surf at Bondi Beach. The Sunshine Coast Noosa is renowned for its surf beaches and lively town with a friendly surfing culture and a myriad of cafés and restaurants. The Australia Zoo, run by Steve Irwin’s family, encourages children to cuddle a koala and hand feed an elephant. Or take a 4x4 to Fraser Island to drive along the amazing 75 Mile Beach highway and swim in the island’s lakes, camping overnight. Cooloola National Park is the place for a guided safari along the sand dunes. Great Barrier Reef Hamilton Island is the top resort in the Whitsunday Islands, part of the Great Barrier Reef. It is one of Australia’s favourite family escapes with more than 60 activities to choose from, with sports, adventures, and experiences for every interest and energy level. Cruise to the Great Barrier Reef and nearby Whitehaven Beach, sail a yacht through the Whitsundays, play golf on one of Australia’s premier courses, snorkel the reef ... or relax at a spa or by one of the many island pools and do nothing at all.

AUSTRALIA’S RED HEART Amongst the many regions of Australia that are wonderful for families, one of our favourites is the the country’s red centre. It’s astonishing landscapes are so completely different from anywhere else in the world and will inevitably create lasting memories for all family – not to mention provide plenty of material for school projects when the children return to school. We recommend a self-drive 4x4 journey through the heartland of Aboriginal culture, enabling you to explore at a pace that suits your family. Spend some time at Alice Springs Desert Park, (considered by Sir David Attenborough to be the best wildlife reserve in the world), before driving through the West McDonell Ranges and continuing to Kings Canyon where the weathered rock formation has created a series of waterholes frequented by rock wallabies, walleroos, lizards and parrots for their evening drink. Uluru (Ayers Rock), Australia’s iconic ‘island mountain’ awaits, one of the most fascinating natural wonders of the world. Guided walks and mountain bike excursions are the best way to appreciate these parts of Australia. Night time showcases the spectacular canopy of stars and famous constellations such as The Southern Cross – a perfect backdrop for al fresco dining. Australia is all about the great outdoors, but there is also ample opportunity to appreciate the ancient cultures – children will enjoy learning how to create Aboriginal dot paintings or listening to Dreamtime stories around the camp fire. NORTHERN INDIA Your guide will be the key to a successful family holiday in India. The doors they will open will not just be physical but cultural. As so often is the case, then, the best parts of the holiday may not be the high-profile official sights (such as the Taj Mahal and the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri) but the more low-key informal moments. Whether playing billiards in a Maharaja’s former palace, watching live cricket, or being invited by a throng of elderly women worshippers to join a singing and dancing session in a Hindu temple filled with the smell of incense and the hypnotic ringing of heavy brass bells. Scattered throughout all of India is a wealth of properties with character and charm – there are also some fabulous palaces but these often make parents nervous. Begin your Indian family holiday in one of the most iconic properties in Asia – The Imperial, New Delhi – even for children it remains a fascinating history lesson. The Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, a perennial favourite, offers unrivalled views of the Taj Mahal from every room. In Jaipur your children can enjoy kite flying, a puppet show and an elephant safari at Dera Amer. Whilst in the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur overnight at Oberoi Rajvilas which with its open spaces and pools is very child friendly. In Udaipur, the Oberoi Udaivilas offers a similar space for the children. Activities that you can do with your family include a horse safari, an exclusive boat ride on Lake Pichola and a camel ride at Devigarh. Sleeping under canvas in remote areas is one of the most authentic ways to experience the natural beauty of India. Sher Bagh, Aman-i-Khas and The Oberoi Vanyavilas provide an excellent range of tented accommodation on the edge of Ranthambore National Park. The camps will organise game drives into the park for you to go in search of the elusive tiger and, importantly, a range of fun activities for your children. RANTHAMBORE

SOUTHERN INDIA The gateways of Bombay (Mumbai) and Madras (Chennai) are the starting points for a tropical Indian family holiday – slower, relaxed, even more exotic than in the north. Combine the gateways with travel to Goa, the coastal paradise located in south western India: the destination is popular for its sun kissed sandy beaches and easygoing lifestyle. With its many fairs and festivals it makes an ideal beach destination or extension to a longer holiday to India. Kerala is known for its coconut fringed beaches, beautiful landscapes and backwaters. The backwaters are wonderfully relaxing and a visit here offers an insight into a unique way of life. Kerala’s perfect climate suits its unique blend of culture and scenery, making for a tranquil and peaceful family holiday. Lush tropical rainforest, coral reef, mangroves, white sandy beaches and an exotic collection of flora and fauna make Southern India an interesting and more reasonably priced stay for families. Southern India can also be easily combined with either Sri Lanka or the Maldives.

GALLE The capital of Sri Lanka’s southern province and former European administrative centre, Galle is a city with a colourful history. Its Dutch atmosphere is very much alive and its most popular attraction is the magnificent Dutch fort, branded a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The beautiful beach of Unawatuna is just 6km south east of the city centre.

TANGALLE Tangalle lies in the south of Sri Lanka and is known for its beaches. A popular excursion away from the beach is a visit to Mulkirigala Rock Temple. Dating back to the 2nd century B.C, the temple has been carved around a series of natural caves. The temple contains many statues of Buddha as well as some beautiful wall paintings.

KANDY The last Royal capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy is situated amongst wooded hills on the shores of a lake and, due to its rambling colonial buildings and temples, could be called the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Kandy is a bustling market town, rich in cultural diversity and is a good transit point for the cultural triangle to the north or the hill country to the south. Its most famous temple is the Temple of the Tooth, named thus as it is said to hold Buddha’s tooth. Every year in July or August a festival is held called Kandy Perahera, at which the golden caskets are paraded around the city accompanied by drummers, dancers, chieftains and more than 50 elephants. DAMBULLA & SIGIRIYA 148km from Colombo, Dambulla is a unique historical site and part of the “Cultural Triangle”. Founded in the 1st-century BC by King Valegamba, Dambulla is home to over 80 caves, some of which have been used by the monks for meditation. Nearby is Minneriya National Park, home to wild elephants and amphibians. The ancient city of Sigiriya has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ruins of this ancient rock fortress and former capital lie on ‘Lion’s Rock’ and date back to the 5th Century. Ancient gardens with walled terraces and moats still surround the settlement whilst frescoes can still be seen on the rock face.

NUWARA ELIYA Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea plantations. The town was created by the British during colonial times and as a result, the homes in the area are very English in style, with manicured lawns and Georgian architecture. The lush green countryside extends for miles across the hills and no visit to the region is complete without a visit to one of the many tea estates.

YALA NATIONAL PARK The largest national park in Sri Lanka, Yala is home to wild elephants, leopard, bears and crocodiles. Your children will be enthralled as you take a safari into the park. SAHARA DESERT CAMPING
