Thank you for your interest in our new brochure for tailor-made holidays to Spain. There is no doubt that this is one of the great cultural destinations of Europe – home to the magnificent cities of Seville, Barcelona and Madrid, and an astonishing variety of relaxed rural and coastal regions. This fascinating country offers visitors a great climate and a wonderfully diverse range of gastronomy, music, opera, art and architecture which are all perfect ingredients for a great short break away. Mainland Spain covers a vast spectrum of landscapes and culture from Santiago and the Basque country in the north, to Barcelona and Catalunya in the East, to Seville and Moorish Andalucia in the south, not forgetting the magnificent capital Madrid in the heart of the country surrounded by many fascinating smaller but significant cities such as Toledo, Avila and Segovia. We highly recommend the outstanding Parador hotels throughout the country which are often housed in magnificent historical buildings in prominent positions. Each region has its own distinct local culture and cuisine, not to mention some outstanding wines such as the well known Ribera del Duero from Rioja. In fact the rise of Spanish wines over the last 20 years has been symptomatic of the rise of every aspect of what the country has to offer in its post Franco era. In addition to the mainland, Spain also offers some of the best European islands which are perfect for spring, summer and autumn: Mallorca and Ibiza in the Mediterranean, and Tenerife and La Gomera in the Atlantic. Although well known as tourist destinations, there is also much for the discerning traveller to explore in terms of culture and unspoilt landscapes. Few destinations can compete with the 21st Century range of contemporary art and architecture – not to mention the brilliant cooking of their top chefs (ask the Kirker Concierge to book you a table at a recommended restaurant), and the state-of-the-art high speed AVE trains linking Seville to Madrid in only two and a half hours, and Barcelona to Madrid in just over three, making twin centre holidays both relaxing and hassle free. All our holidays include private car transfers, but for those on longer itineraries who prefer to drive, we can include car hire and would certainly recommend this in Andalucia where many of the smaller towns are slightly off the beaten track and best explored by road. As well as the art of Picasso, Gaudi and Miro, Spain offers visitors that wonderful blend of world class classical culture in museums such as Madrid’s Prado and Thyssen galleries (complimentary tickets included for all Kirker clients). We also highly recommend booking one of our expert guides for a private walking tour on the first morning of your holiday – it is a great treat and will add significantly to your enjoyment – just ask our concierge for details at the time of booking. There has never been a better time to visit Spain, so please don’t hesitate to contact us for further details and one of our experts would be delighted to help. We very much look forward to hearing from you.

If you would like to view photographs of our hotels, please visit our website, www.kirkerholidays.com where you will find a number of images for each property. However, please remember that website photographs can sometimes provide a seductive picture that may have been taken through rose-tinted spectacles on a sunny day – speaking to one of our Kirker experts is a better way to help you find the hotel that perfectly suits your needs. Spas are increasingly popular and a great way to relax and unwind whilst away on holiday and a number of our recommended hotels offer exceptional spa facilities. We recommend that treatments are booked in advance, please ask for details. The green icon indicates that the hotel has its own golf course, or a recommended course nearby which can be pre-booked by the hotel’s concierge.
Private transfers Our holidays include private transfers on arrival and on departure – instantly removing the anxiety that many experience when arriving in an unfamiliar destination. No taxis, no fare negotiation – just a warm welcome and a smooth journey to your chosen hotel. Certain holidays to rural destinations include hire car.
You may choose to visit two or more destinations in one holiday. Fly into one airport and back from another – why not include a mixture of air travel with rail? Our experienced tailor-made department can help you to get the most out of your holiday. We thoroughly recommend longer itineraries combining a few days in a city followed by 3 or 4 nights relaxing in one of our countryside or coastal properties. We take immense pride in creating carefully crafted holidays, and although we are not necessarily the cheapest, we do aim to offer exceptional overall value for money and rely on our clients for repeat business and recommendations for our future success.

We charge you the price we pay plus £10 per ticket. Telephone 020 7593 2286 or email concierge@kirkerholidays.com
Private tours Whenever you arrive in a new destination for the first time, we recommend a short private walking tour or a tour with a private car if appropriate. Why not ask us to pre-book one of our local guides to meet you in your hotel foyer on your first morning for a two or three hour private excursion?
Flexible service Fly from your local airport We aim to offer outstanding service from start to finish; whether you would like us to recommend and book a restaurant for a special celebration dinner, arrange private guided tours, organise opera or concert tickets, wine tasting or cookery courses – we take full responsibility for the smooth running of every aspect of your holiday, so that you can relax and enjoy every minute. It is never too late to book with us. We welcome late bookings – even on the day of departure and can often book rooms when hotels say they are full.
Speak to an expert Our sales team has many years of experience and we make regular visits to the hotels and destinations that we feature. Clients often comment that they have seen a tempting photograph on a hotel’s website but would prefer to speak to someone who knows the property, because they need to find out what it is really like.
4
We always try to book flights from your local airport, and, although we recommend flights with scheduled airlines, we can also book seats with ‘no frills’ carriers if you wish.
Ground arrangements only If you have already booked your own flight tickets, we would be happy to book all other aspects of your holiday, e.g. transfers and hotel accommodation. Prices are quoted immediately and include: breakfast, tax and service at the hotel, plus transfers and Kirker extras.

TENERIFE: CARNIVAL 27 February – 13 March
JEREZ: FERIA DEL CABALLO (HORSE FAIR) 22 – 29 May
A colourful and vibrant carnival to rival those of it’s counterpart in Brazil. The main festivities take place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where there are processions, horse parades and the election of the Carnival Queen.
The Jerez Horse Fair is one of the world’s most prestigious equine events. Thousands come to witness the impressive choreography from the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art, whose Spanish purebreds and Andalucian thoroughbreds perform magnificent displays of dressage, show jumping and vaulting. Throughout the festival many flamenco shows and street parties also take place.
MALLORCA: ELS DARRERS DIE February (dates to be advised) Translated as The Last Days festival, it refers to the last days in which meat can be consumed before the start of Lent. The highlights of the carnival are the processions of thousands of people in fancy dress. Most participants stay in fancy dress over the weekend until the final act of the traditional ‘sardine burial’.
VALENCIA: LAS FALLAS 15 – 19 March This is one of Spain’s most unique and exciting festivals. It is a celebration of the patron saint of Valencia, ‘Saint Joseph’, that takes place over five days, during which there are concerts, paella contests, firework displays and a huge array of fiestas. The festival climaxes on the final evening with the dramatic burning and exploding of the ninots. These statues are built to represent various political or historical figures and are filled with fireworks and set alight in a noisy and colourful display.
SEVILLE/CORDOBA/GRANADA: SEMANA SANTA (HOLY WEEK) 17 – 24 April Taking place in the week leading up to Easter, the Semana Santa is an extremely popular festival throughout Spain and in particular, Andalucia. During the festival there are over 50 processions of floats depicting scenes from the Passion. The most important procession is the Madruga which starts on Holy Thursday and continues through to dawn of Good Friday.
SEVILLE: FERIA 3 – 8 May Usually held two weeks after Semana Santa, this six day festival started out as a cattle trading fair over a hundred years ago, but has since become a celebration of Andalucian culture. Bullfights and flamenco shows take centre stage and the streets are lined with many casetas – colourful tents that host parties thrown by political figures, members of the aristocracy or clubs. Entrance to many are by invitation only but there are plenty of open parties that are extremely lively and hosts tend to be very generous with their sherry!
MADRID: SAN ISIDRO 12 – 16 May This festival of music, dance and food in honour of San Isidro, the patron saint of Madrid, begins with a speech from the mayor in the Plaza Mayor, followed by a live concert and the cooking of an enormous Cocido Madrileno, a traditional stew. The festival also marks the start of the city’s major bullfighting season, which lasts for 30 days.
6
GRANADA: CORPUS CHRISTI 23 June This Catholic festival to acknowledge the body of Jesus Christ in the Holy Water has become more of a carnival than a religious celebration over the years. The week long fiesta consists of live music, the sharing of food and drink, bullfights and art exhibitions, all leading up to the religious procession on Corpus Christi Sunday.
SANTANDER: FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE SANTANDER August This annual music festival is one of the oldest in Spain. Throughout August the town plays host to opera companies, ballet performances and many classical concerts. The performances take place in El Palacio de Festivales as well as over 50 other venues, including historical churches and open air spaces.
BILBAO AND SAN SEBASTIAN: SEMANA GRANDE 3rd week in August This festival celebrates the area’s Basque heritage and takes place for nine days every August. As well as the usual lively street parties, concerts and firework displays there are some traditional strongman competitions.Very little sleep is had throughout the week as the celebrations don't tend to start until around midnight and continue until sunrise.
BARCELONA: FESTES DE LA MERCE 24 September This event pays tribute to the patron saint of Barcelona, the Virgin de la Merce, and is the city’s main cultural festival. There are parades, musical performances and fireworks. One of the highlights takes place in the Plaza de San Juame, where groups of young men compete to see who can form the highest human pyramid.
GIRONA: SANT NARCIS FESTIVAL 24 October – 1 November Girona’s largest festival recognises the patron saint Sant Narcis and opens with the wheeling out of a huge monster-like effigy in front of the town hall. Market stalls selling local produce are set up all over town and a huge funfair dominates the main avenue. The festival closes with a very impressive fireworks display.

It is well worth exploring not only for the flora and fauna but also for its rich cultural history. Perhaps the Costa Brava’s most famous resident was the surrealist Salvador Dali. The influence of the coastal scenery and its people on his work was profound and the main sites associated with the artist can be visited within a day.We also include an excellent spa resort on one of the Costa Brava’s best sandy beaches. 1

Llegendes de Catedral, Girona
Superior
Located over an hour by car from Barcelona, Girona is a charming mediaeval city on the banks of the Onyar River. Its strategic position has been coveted for centuries; so much so that it became known as the ‘city of a thousand sieges’. The old town and Jewish Quarter with its atmospheric narrow streets are a delight and can be explored from the Llegendes de Catedral;, a small and attractive hotel located close to the Gothic Cathedral. Its façade is traditional and contrasts with the interiors which are stylish and contemporary. There are 15 bedrooms in the main building and two apartments a few steps away that are ideal for families. 3 night price from £668 per person.
We consider this to be one of the most atmospheric hotels in Europe. It is a beautifully restored mediaeval castle that dates back to the 14th Century and is located on the edge of the town of la Bisbal d’Emporda between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean in countryside that compares favourably with the best of Provence or Tuscany. The 27 bedrooms are located in the main castle or the newer garden building (all rooms in the garden building have private balconies) and the decoration is warm and contemporary with some unusual pieces from China, India and Morocco. For a special occasion, the tower rooms in the castle with their spectacular views are recommended. The candlelit restaurant which offers exquisite Mediterranean dishes is wonderfully romantic and there is plenty of outdoor space to relax. There is a summer swimming pool, a lounge with open fire and a cellar bar. Barcelona can be reached in an hour and a half and Girona is only 30 minutes away. Hotel closes for winter and opens 4 March. 3 night price from £569 per person low season, £598 per person high season.

Hacienda De San Rafael (a deluxe country inn)
Set among sunflower and cotton fields, located in the heart of the country some 25 miles from Jerez and Seville, this is without doubt one of our favourite hotels in Spain. Our good friends – the Reid family – have converted their elegant, very Spanish former farmhouse into a small, luxurious hotel. The 11 bedrooms are very well furnished and are set around a flower-filled courtyard (most are split level, all have Colonial-style ceiling fans). There is a beautiful sitting room, a dining room (the quality of the cooking is exceptional), an air-conditioned library with TV, gardens, and an open-air swimming pool with sun terraces. Three Casitas have been built in the Hacienda’s grounds. Each is air-conditioned and has a bedroom, a separate living room, a bathroom with separate shower and a private garden. There is an additional swimming pool which is for the exclusive use of those staying in the Casitas. Supplement: £90 per person per night. TOWNS OF ANDALUCIA Embrace the traditional culture of Andalucia in its glorious hilltop towns. The magnificent Moorish palaces and the elegant mosques are the legacy of the centuries of Islamic domination, which lasted longest in Spain’s most southerly region, a heartbeat from northern Africa. The Cathedrals and churches are equally dramatic, as are the numerous, colourful fiestas. The traditional nightlife is always lively and a performance of flamenco, Andalucia’s unique music and dance, is not to be missed.
GRANADA The fabled Alhambra Palace and its beautiful Generalife Gardens dominate Granada from their hilltop perch; beyond are the spectacular Sierra Nevada mountains. Below the Alhambra is the Albayzin, the old Islamic quarter. Unforgettable. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to include guaranteed entrance tickets to the Alhambra and Generalife Gardens. The authorities have decreed that credit cards must be provided at the entrance and must match the card that was used to purchase the tickets. If you would like us to book tickets for you, we would be delighted to do so and will not charge for this service.Timed entrance tickets cost 13 Euros and are subject to availability. Palacio de los Patos This fine hotel consists of two separate buildings, the original Palacio which dates back to the 19th Century and is set around a beautiful stone staircase and a contrasting, strikingly modern new building with a lattice made of alabaster forming part of the façade. PARADORS This unique collection of hotels includes some of the most characterful properties in Spain: many of which have been converted from the country’s rich heritage of ancient castles; grand palaces; manor houses; convents; monasteries and forts throughout the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to the heritage properties, the Paradors include a number of striking contemporary hotels too, but whatever the architectural style, you will always find Parador hotels in carefully chosen locations within some of the most fascinating towns and cities, or in spectacular rural or coastal areas. Although each is unique, all offer guests a broad range of facilities including restaurants and bars, as well as comfortable 2, 3, 4 and 5 star accommodation. Paradors make an excellent base from which to explore the city or local area, and we would be delighted to help you to create a tailor-made holiday combining two or more Paradors in one comprehensive itinerary. We can also include car hire or private transfers and rail tickets; we particularly recommend the AVE high speed trains which operate between Madrid and Seville and Madrid and Barcelona. We have negotiated special contracts with Paradors to enable us to offer any of their properties; they can also be combined with any number of hotels from the full Kirker portfolio of hotels in Spain. We have selected some of our favourites which are highlighted below (some are described in more detail within the brochure) however, please do telephone 020 7593 2288 to speak to one of our experts on Spain who will be able to offer any Parador.

MADRID Madrid is a people’s city and the exuberant way of life of the charming Madrileños is impossible to resist. Linger over a late lunch, settle down to a siesta, keep hunger at bay at a tapas bar and don’t expect dinner until at least 10pm. No wonder the nightlife continues until dawn. Madrid is one of the most cultural capitals in Europe. Most visitors head straight to the Prado to see its unrivalled collection of Spanish art but don’t miss the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, where the whole history of art from the past eight hundred years is superbly represented. Lovers of modern art should visit the Reina Sofia Museum where Picasso’s moving ‘Guernica’ is on show. Madrid is a wonderful base from which to explore the historic towns of Castile that surround the capital – Toledo, Segovia, the Royal Palace of Aranjuez and the forbidding monastery at El Escorial, the majestic palace and retreat of Philip II. 4

ARBITRATION. Disputes arising out of, or in connection with, this contract which cannot be amicably settled may be referred to arbitration, if the customer so wishes, under a special Scheme arranged by the Association of British Travel Agents, and administered by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. The scheme provides for a simple and inexpensive method of arbitration on documents alone with restricted liability on the customer in respect of costs. Full details will be provided on request or can be obtained from the ABTA website (www.abta.com). The Scheme does not apply to claims for an amount greater than £5,000 per person. There is also a limit of £25,000 per booking form. Neither does it apply to claims which are solely in respect of physical injury or illness or their consequences. The Scheme can however deal with compensation claims which include an element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,000 on the amount the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element. The application for arbitration and Statement of Claim must be received by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators within nine months of the date of return from the holiday. Outside this time limit arbitration under the Scheme may still be available if the company agrees, but the ABTA Code does not require such agreement. DATA PROTECTION.
