A&K PHILANTHROPY HELPS SUPPORT GIJEDABUNG PRIMARY SCHOOL, TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA
We believe that travel should not only inspire but also respect the natural environment and benefit the indigenous peoples whose lands we visit. Through our charitable division, Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP), we have been supporting conservation projects around the world for over three decades. With a ‘high yield, low impact’ policy, we seek to address pressing environmental, educational and public health needs and give more back to the communities in the regions where we operate. This makes a difference to the lives of thousands of people around the world – for example, following the devastating destruction to Myanmar by Cyclone Nargis in 2008, leaving thousands in the Irrawaddy Delta suffering from disease and starvation, A&K rallied to collect over US$340,000 for essential supplies while our teams on the ground ensured that these went directly to those in need. We currently support 30 different projects across the world, from large-scale relief efforts following natural disasters, such as Un Techo Para Chile (A Roof for Chile) following the terrible 2010 earthquake, to initiating local community programmes such as beekeeping in Tanzania or Sam’s Brothers Clean Water project in Cambodia. For every booking we take, a donation is made to A&K Philanthropy and you are welcome to visit our projects when travelling with us. A full list of our projects can be seen on www.akphilanthropy.com
Dear Traveller I founded Abercrombie & Kent in East Africa nearly 50 years ago with little more than a Land Rover, a couple of tents and the all-important icemaker. Little did I know at the time I was creating a blueprint for a travel company that now takes people to every corner of the world in comfort, style and absolute safety. The key to our success? We believe in leaving nothing to chance. We believe in service. We believe in getting to know our clients so we can anticipate their individual needs. We believe that focusing on the little details can elevate a journey from being a great holiday into the experience of a lifetime. We believe that by religiously following these principles, clients will keep coming back to us for their holidays. They do. Now it’s your turn‌

Our network of offices around the world means that wherever you are, a member of the A&K team is never far away. Whatever their role, A&K staff set the standards of service and excellence. They are chosen for their absolute dedication to understanding the personalised touches that make your holiday both distinctive and individual. The best way to find out more about a place is to talk to someone who’s been there. Our travel consultants have been to every country featured in this brochure. With in-depth, first-hand experience of the countries they specialise in, you can be sure they will take time to find out exactly what you want from your journey and create an itinerary that gives you exactly what you want.
We specialise in tailor-made travel. We go to great lengths to understand exactly what you want from your holiday. We discuss the destination, style of accommodation, mode of travel and experiences you will have to ensure the combination is just right. For you. Landmark birthdays, weddings, anniversaries or just a big family event provide the perfect excuse to celebrate in a memorable destination. We do these too. Whether finding the perfect retreat for a large family party, arranging for hundreds of guests to attend a wedding overseas or the most romantic place on the planet to celebrate an anniversary, our consultants know exactly which hotels offer the extra touches that will ensure your celebration goes with a bang. Likewise we know which strings to pull to ensure our travel partners push out all the stops for honeymoons. For those with families, we know how difficult it can be choosing the right place to take children. Trying to find somewhere that will occupy and engage a variety of ages, personalities and interests can be a Herculean challenge. Because we have experience in so many countries and have sampled the accommodation first hand, we are able to suggest destinations that will offer everything you need in terms of entertainment, and also which places are the most familyfriendly and flexible.

Sanctuary Olonana, Game Drive
Sanctuary Olonana Sanctuary Olonana is built along sustainable lines in a region considered to offer the best game viewing in the world. The main dining room and veranda command views over a dramatic stretch of the Mara River. Sundowners are enjoyed to the chorus of hippos who have made their home below the camp in the river. The lodge has a library, a pool and even its own enclosed organic garden where much of the food served in the camp is grown. At the mini-spa, guests can experience traditional African remedies alongside French marine therapies from Thalgo. The camp has fourteen canvas tents which are extremely comfortable and spacious. All of them have parquet floors, four-poster bed and a private veranda overlooking the river. Camp cuisine is superb, using only the finest and freshest ingredients.

PEPONI HOTEL
o ns
A great conclusion to your safari is to spend a few days by the beautiful beaches and warm waters of the Kenyan Coast, offering a wonderful escape to wind down after the excitement of safari. Accommodation varies from rustic beach bandas to more modern stylish properties. Situated on the northern most peninsula of Manda Island on the Lamu-Kiwayu archipelago is the small private lodge of Manda Bay, surrounded by magnificent coral gardens, empty beaches and indigenous woodlands. Peponi is small and personal; originally opening its doors in 1967, it has retained much of its original charm and character and is the perfect hideaway for rest after a safari or simply from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The Majlis is tastefully designed and decorated to reflect the heritage of East Africa and houses an exquisite private art collection which mixes local tradition with a contemporary twist. Funzi Keys is located on its very own unspoilt island in the Indian Ocean, yet just 15 minutes by air from Mombasa. It offers its guests beautiful seclusion within a natural landscape. And the Serena Beach Hotel & Spa is a perfect family option set amongst lush tropical gardens, fringed by white beaches and shaded by coconut palms. xtensi

Kilimanjaro Standing at 19,340 feet, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and spans five different ecological zones. Of the various routes to climb the mountain, we recommend Machame. It takes six days and is the most scenic route affording sweeping views across the Masai Steppe onto Meru. A&K’s own dedicated climbing operation uses only the best mountain apparatus, safety equipment, communications network and specialist tents on the mountain. Safety is our priority – we are one of the few companies carrying oxygen bottles, altitude chambers, first aid kits and multiple communication measures on every climb. All our guides are trained in first aid, mountain craft, natural history and ecological awareness to ensure a oncein-a-lifetime experience.

SANCTUARY SWALA
SANCTUARY KUSINI
Sanctuary Swala Sanctuary Swala is located in a secluded area of Tarangire National Park, considered by many to be northern Tanzania’s most interesting park, famous for its large herds of elephant and spectacular baobab trees. Twelve tents surround the main dining area, deck and library which are elevated on stilts around an enormous ancient baobab tree, and an infinity pool overlooks the watering hole. Each tent features a spacious open plan arrangement with comfortable king size beds, en suite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor shower and is tended by a butler who looks after your every need. Beautifully furnished with traditional materials, the tents at Sanctuary Swala are unashamedly luxurious but close enough to nature for an exciting night under canvas.
Sanctuary Kusini Sanctuary Kusini is located on a raised kopje surrounded by woodland, providing stunning views of the plains below from the main deck and spectacular stargazing at night. Zebra, Cape buffalo, lion and cheetah are a common sight year round. The communal tent has a library, sitting room and veranda. Bush breakfasts and sundowners are served on giant boulders of the kopje. Each tent has its own personal attendant to look after you during your stay and a private wooden veranda with comfortable furniture, the ideal spot to relax after a hot shower.

BARAZA VILLAS
The Coast Tanzania offers great diversity – the snowcapped Kilimanjaro, open plains of the Serengeti and the forests of the Mahale Mountains. But don’t forget the Indian Ocean off the east coast of the country. These waters attract divers and snorkellers from all over the world and the white sandy beaches and perfect secluded bays are the ideal place to conclude your African safari. The island of Pemba, known as ‘the green island’ in Arabic, forms part of the Zanzibar archipelago, lying 50 kilometres north of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. Together with Mafia Island, these three islands form the Spice Islands.
Zanzibar The island of Zanzibar conjures up images of an exotic ‘Spice Island’ filled with mystery and intrigue. Its rich cultural history is the result of the passing traders that explored this route to the Far East. With a variety of accommodation Zanzibar is a great location for a relaxing holiday or for a few days at the end of your safari. Enjoy the intimate tropical paradise of Mnemba Island surrounded by warm blue waters and a coral atoll with a staggering diversity of marine life for great diving. The Zanzibar Serena on Stone Town’s sea front allows you to spend days exploring the vibrant and enchanting town. Or stay in one of Baraza’s villas, designed in a fusion of Indian, Arabic and Swahil and overlooking the lush gardens or crystal blue waters. With your own private plunge pool it offers a great escape from the heat of the day.

Other tribes include the Ari, the Karo and the Hamer-Bena whose traditions include body painting. The area is also one of Ethiopia’s most fertile as it falls within the Great Rift Valley which offers amazing scenery and beautiful lakes. A visit to this part of the world is not complete without a visit to the majestic Victoria Falls itself, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Falls can be viewed from the Zambian or Zimbabwean sides although more of the Falls are visible from Zimbabwe. Twice the height of Niagara Falls, its pounding waters represent nature’s raw power and provide an alternative view of Africa – in fact the whole region has become a centre for adventure and excitement. Adrenalin junkies can bungee from the bridge dividing the two countries, raft the white-water rapids or swing across the canyon. A more sedate activity is to cruise the Zambezi River at sunset. The town of Victoria Falls is located on the Zimbabwean side just a short walk from the Falls through weaving paths and has some excellent craft markets for the souvenir hunter.

Sanctuary Puku Ridge Tented Camp
Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge
Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp, South Luangwa South Luangwa is one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and not without reason. Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp is well located on a rocky ridge overlooking the Kakumbi dambo (valley). Named after the elusive Puku antelope which never strays far from water, this is the perfect spot to revel in the abundance of wildlife and tradition of an old-world safari camp. Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp is an intimate camp, built unobtrusively close to the wild. Each of the seven luxury oversized safari tents have en suite facilities providing the option of taking a shower inside or out. The diverse wildlife along the valley offer great opportunities for photography. In the evenings relax and unwind as you dine with the soundtrack of the night sounds of Africa. The concentration of game around the Luangwa river and its oxbow lagoons is among the most intense in Africa offering thrilling guided walks accompanied by a professional guide and an armed national parks scout. Night game drives allow sightings of nocturnal animals in the South Luangwa National Park.
Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge, South Luangwa Once a private Presidential retreat, Sanctuary Chichele occupies one of the most breathtaking sites in the entire South Luangwa National Park. The original structures were built around 1960 and the building has been transformed in recent years to create a spectacular safari lodge designed to complement its natural surroundings. In order to exploit the wonderful floodplain vistas offered by the site, ten private elegant air-conditioned cottages are built along the edge of the hillside, each providing panoramic views. Each suite has en suite facilities and is well equipped with all the little extras you would expect of a lodge of this quality. The lodge also has a relaxing swimming pool with views of the adjacent valley. Meals are served in a variety of locations – the luxurious indoor dining room, the veranda or the boma area outside. Night drives using spotlights enable you to see nocturnal animals such as leopard and spotted hyena.

Through the day expeditions with expert guides allow an up-close bush experience, and when the floodwaters arrive from the north, mokoros come into their own, gliding silently along labyrinthine waterways. A range of spa treatments are on offer overlooking the Delta and the swimming pool provides a welcome escape from the heat of the day. Sanctuary Baines’ Camp Set amongst shady trees and huge termite mounds is the effortlessly romantic Sanctuary Baines’ Camp. Poised between the plains game of Moremi and the permanent waters of the Delta, the area teems with bird and animal species. A unique attraction is the opportunity to meet the orphan elephants adopted by naturalists Doug and Sandy Groves and interact with these gentle giants in their natural environment. The main area has a deck for outdoor dining and views over the permanent water of the lagoon. A swimming pool with private salas offers yet more opportunity for relaxation. Game drives in 4x4 vehicles will take you close to Africa’s greatest predators by day and continue well after dark in this private reserve. The waters open up the whole world of floating safaris, atmospherically silent at the gentle pace of a poled mokoro or faster in a comfortable shaded motor boat. Truly an eco-camp, the walls have been made from recycled materials and are neutrally decorated to blend in with the natural habitat. The camp has just five luxury suites, all with en suite facilities, mini bar and ceiling fans, set on elevated platforms with wooden decks overlooking the permanent waters of the Boro River. Ludertiz This Germanic town on the coast is the gateway to the ‘Forbidden Area’ where diamonds are still being discovered. From here you can visit the ghost towns of Kolmanskop and Elizabeth Bay, mining towns that sprung up in early 1908 only to be abandoned 30 years later after the discovery of more diamonds at Oranjemund. The towns have now been reclaimed by the surrounding sand dunes making them eerie and interesting places to visit. Walvis Bay This lagoon is one of the most important coastal wetlands in Africa – supporting up to 80,000 birds during the summer months and 68,000 during the winter months. The most common birds are the curlew sandpipers, sanderlings and little stints, and you will also see the greater and lesser flamingos which account for more than 90 per cent of the intra-African migrants.

Great Rail Journeys The world famous Blue Train and Rovos Rail make epic journeys between Cape Town and Pretoria over one and two nights respectively. They bring back a bygone era of travel in a unique and stylish way. Together with fine dining, superb wine lists and ever-changing scenery this is a journey not to be missed.
Blue Train This iconic train of South Africa will take you on a romantic 24 hour journey from Cape Town to Pretoria or Pretoria to Cape Town. The Blue Train combines the luxury of the world’s leading hotels with the charm of train travel. To ensure the ultimate in hospitality, each coach has a professionally trained butler. A sophisticated, opulent atmosphere, gourmet menu and the finest South African wines sourced from boutique vineyards, make dining on The Blue Train a magnificent experience. The dining car provides seating for 42 people. There are two sittings for lunch and dinner. Lunch is smartcasual, dinner is jacket and tie for the men and elegant wear for the ladies, while breakfast is casual. On the Cape Town to Pretoria route you will pass through the wine lands and have dramatic views of Hex River Valley. Heading northward you will move through the endless sweeping landscapes of the Karoo, stopping at Matjiesfontein to walk in the footsteps of the likes of Lord Randolph Churchill and Cecil John Rhodes who were enchanted by this small town. From here you will move on overnight through to Pretoria passing through the mining towns of the Gold Reef. The Pretoria to Cape Town route following pretty much the same route in reverse, although stopping at Kimberley enroute instead. Kimberley was once the epicentre of the worldwide diamond rush. This city’s chequered history is inextricably linked with the romance of these precious stones. Here the sheer magnitude of the “Big Hole”, the largest hole in the word excavated by hand, is an impressive sight.

Rovos Rail Step aboard the wood panelled coaches – classics remodelled and refurbished to mint condition – and enjoy fine cuisine in five-star luxury as some of the most varied scenery imaginable unfolds. The rebuilt sleeper coaches are the most spacious train suites in the world, offering every modern convenience and comfort. The epitome of style, with handsome wood panelling and period Edwardian features, the air-conditioned suites accommodate two people, configured as twin or spacious double beds. An extremely luxurious way to travel from Pretoria to Cape Town, the train stops occasionally en route to see places of interest. The 1600 kilometre journey is a perfect illustration of South Africa as a world in one country. Passing through the grasslands of the gold rich Highveld to the haunting barrenness of the Great Karoo, the train moves on through the spectacular mountain ranges and scenic wine lands of the Cape. Journey’s end is Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa, cradled by the imposing bulk of Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lions Head. Highlights of the north and southbound routes include a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein. A stop is also made in Kimberley providing an opportunity to enjoy a city tour and a visit to the Mine Museum and the world’s largest man-made excavation, the Big Hole.

Shamwari Riverdene Lodge
Tswalu Kalahari Game Reserve Tswalu is situated in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, at the foot of the Korannaberg Mountains, some 300 kilometres north west of Kimberley. Tswalu was the vision of the late Stephen Boler, a Manchester entrepreneur, who undertook one of the largest private conservation projects in Africa. In a period of four years he established the 100,000 hectare reserve and introduced thousands of game animals including the rare desert black rhino, sable and roan antelope, Cape buffalo and cheetah. Guests are received at either of Tswalu’s two lodges.
TSWALU
The large main lodge ‘Motse’ is near the centre of the reserve. In keeping within the African style of thatched roofs and traditional décor Motse boasts a galleried library, outdoor and indoor dining areas and wine cellar with its centrepiece a vast open fireplace soaring high into its roof. Motse achieves a rustic feel without compromising its luxury facilities. The surroundings are elegantly simple with a glamorous swimming pool opening to the remarkable scene of animals drinking at a nearby watering hole. Tswalu’s Junior Ranger programme has been carefully designed to meet the enthusiasms of a broad age range. Each child is given their own backpack full of guides and tools to make the most of their safari and archery is on offer where they learn to make their own bows and arrows.
Shamwari Riverdene Lodge The family-friendly Shamwari Riverdene Lodge at Shamwari Game Reserve accommodates a maximum of just 18 guests. Activities include morning and evening game drives or walking safaris, accompanied by a highly-experienced ranger. For the children there are spacious green lawns with a jungle gym and a supervised playroom – and game drives are planned to match the interests of children of all ages. The nine en suite rooms are fully air-conditioned and feature a small lounge area, television and telephone. The communal area comprises two elegantly furnished casual lounges and a glorious sunroom, a magnificent rim flow swimming pool with sun deck and poolside bar and a dining room which opens onto a spacious outdoor barbecue area. As with all the lodges at Shamwari, you receive personal attention from your assigned rangers for the duration of your stay.
