From the Editor The excitement is rising in the air as we prepare for our annual Carolina Photo Expo. We know that all the work that the Carolina Photo Expo team has put forth will lead to an awesome event and a wonderful print competition for all. Speaking about Print Competition, please note that ACI has agreed to print all of our digital prints again this year. The important item to remember is having your image printed and remembering the cutoff date is August 9th, midnight. You can still enter up till midnight August 13, 2015. Also, I'd challenge each one of you to volunteer where ever you can to help fortify the Professional Photographers of North Carolina. Not only are we a strong family, but a renown association that helps Photographers grow and achieve their full potential. With volunteers we thrive! Rose Mary Cheek

From the President Message from the President

Last month, I addressed the frequently asked question about how to price your photography for profitability. This month Professional Photographers of America (PPA) issued its yearly “Benchmark Business Guide which has become the industry standard. The following page contains an excerpt which helps to explain the basic components of a successful business. The Benchmark gives you a starting place from which you can plug in your own financial goals. Even though your numbers may be different, possibly larger or smaller, the percentages of cost of sales, general expenses and net profit should remain about the same. As I recommended last month, find a PPNC mentor and have a candid conversation about achieving your goals. More information and the complete 2015 Benchmark Guide can be found at PPA. com/Benchmark. Now is the Time. Ellis

5

The Basics In 2005, PPA began compiling financial data from studios across the country in order to analyze and share what a profitable and sustainable photography business looks like. Since that time, the Benchmark survey has gained widespread recognition as the definitive resource for professional photographers seeking to achieve financial success. Three Valuable Numbers You Need to Know (1) Cost of sales, (2) general expenses and (3) NP + OC are three categories that all the money in your business filters through. These three categories make up the whole of your business's finances and tell its financial story and health.

General Expenses All of your fixed costs includling overhead

Cost of Sales (COS) The costs incurred in the production of goods sold by a company. COS includes the cost of materials and direct labor costs.

expenses, administrative costs, marketing, employee expenses, and depreciation.

Net Profit Total revenue less all operating expenses (COS

Owner's Compensation Money taken out of the business

and general expenses.) Net profit represents money that stays in the business to pay off debt, to anticipate cyclical economic changes and as working capital.

as personal income.

Carolina Photo SENIORS LORA YEATER Lora’s program, “Follow Your Heart,” covers how she started her business in the basement of her home and soon had to build a bigger studio because of how quickly things grew. It also gives tips on how to set yourself apart from other photographers. She discuss how to stay resilient even through the inevitable storms that life sends our way and how to use that resiliency to help others. As a predominantly senior portrait photographer, Lora takes special care to learn each individual’s personality before they even come in for a session. She feels that she has been blessed with the ability to help others see the beauty within themselves and to capture that beauty in a portrait that will be cherished by the family for generations. Lora is a member of the Professional Photographers of West Virginia, the Professional Photographers of America, and the American Society of Photographers. She began her professional career in 2008, and in her

first year of competition she earned West Virginia’s Photographer of the Year. She repeated her success as Photographer of the Year again in 2010, 2011, and most recently in 2013. As a competitor by nature against others, 40

To do that, all we need to do is try using a continuous light, like and LED panel, instead of a strobe, and choose a microphone that suits your specific needs. Carolina Photo OUTSOURCING IS NOT A FOUR LETTER WORD Brian Mullins Work smarter, not harder. You want your business profitable, of course, but theres only so much you can do in a day. Plus, anti-depressants are expensive, so you may as well do it for your mental health too. Brian Mullins & Jenn Aan have a unique angle of attack on today’s market by running two separate studios out of the same office. In addition to teaming up, they also outsource as many things as they can to free up their time to focus on the things they love to do and keep

their sanity. This model allows them to insert themselves into the workflow in areas where they excel, and use other companies where they don’t. It’s a streamlined business model that’s good for the soul and the pocketbook.

Carolina Photo VIDEO - USING IT WITHIN YOUR MARKETING Bill Goode Bill has been in the Tarboro, North Carolina community for over 33 years. He and his wife Amy have gained a reputation for quality and outstanding customer service. He has been called upon to create portraits throughout North Carolina and have built a client base beyond his market area. Bill has always been intrigued with the quality and story telling aspect of video for many years. At a young age he remembers he wanted to be the guy behind the TV camera on the studio set.

Video is such a strong medium but many photography business owners are not incorporating this force into their own business marketing and product enhancement. Most of us already have the equipment on hand to jump right in and start making a difference. With so many choices on the internet to broadcast your video’s like youtube, facebook, viemo and your own websites this opens up a whole new direction in business marketing. In his program, he will show the changes video has made

in our marketing and also how using video can create new product lines while also enhancing the products we are now using. We are in the image business and we should be using every aspect of imagery we can. Bill has been a member of the PPNC for over 30 years and many of us have seen so many changes in this industry more so in the last five years then ever before. We do need to keep up with the trends in
