From the President To all the PPNC Family, 2017 is rapidly unfolding as a sensational, all-star year for PPNC! We have hired Rex Truell to be our acting Executive Director, helping Loretta Byrd with administrative duties for the next six months. Rex is also helping streamline a number of PPNC’s business processes. We welcome Chris Garner as PPNC’s new Treasurer. Pro Share classes continue with hands-on-training, helping photographers in many ways. Keep watching the PPNC Facebook page for the latest on new classes. Dozens have already benefited from these helpful classes, and seats will continue to be available on a first come, first serve basis. If you were fortunate enough to attend our Winter Seminar know what a treasure it was. It began with the IPC Southeast District Photographic Competition judging. Critiques are great, but the opportunity to be present while a panel of affiliate jurors scores, and challenges your best work is a delight, a disappointment, a revelation, and an awesome education all rolled into one. There is no better way to view your work than through the eyes of others. If you are not yet competing, get going. It’s good for your personal growth as well as your business’s advancement. For the first time we were able to livestream award announcements to the nation through our Friends of PPNC Facebook page. If you missed it, it’s still there on the page (under videos) at this link: https://www.facebook.com/ppofnc. It was also the longest “adlib” I’ve ever attempted! The judging salons were followed by Saturday Shootouts, with head shots at Mike Bayley’s studio and gorgeous modeling sessions at Fletcher Park with seniors, and a bride and groom. Many thanks are owed to Christina Holcomb, back to her usual magic, and Jim Wotzjen, who engineered the entire seminar. Jeff and Lori Pool presented fabulous programs, demonstrating their business acumen and Lightroom expertise. (I didn’t know you could “tweet” from Lightroom!) Sunday and Monday brought Carl Caylor’s master artistry. Mike and Matt Bayley taught us about the evolution of family portraits and posing, and Angela Blankenship demonstrated how to capture the soul of a child through expression. Of course, nothing could possibly have been finer than to have here in Carolina our own Randy McNeilly share with us his photographic journey. He went from humble commercial beginnings to the top of the photographic food chain, evolving with technology, and living at the apex of image competition all the way. Continued on Page 12

Recruit-Retain-Engage Action Team: by. Chris Adamczyk Calling all PPNCers....... Chris Adamczyk, Chris Garner, George Joelle, Tom McCabe, Jim Woltjen To strengthen PPNC, President Ned Winn has established an Recruit-Retain-Engage Action Team to create a strategy for recruiting, engaging and retaining members. The Team includes members from each Guild: Jim Woltjen, Tom McCabe and Chris Adamczyk (Eastern); George Joelle (Central); and Chris Garner and (Western), but all PPNC members are asked to get involved. Actions that you can take by contacting one of the Action Team members include: · Join the Speaker’s list for a photography program at a college/ institute in your Guild. · Volunteer to be a Mentor or Guide. · Indicate if you are looking for a Mentor. · Volunteer for the New Member Committee. · Contact an Action Team Member to learn about the other ways to get involved.

Summary: Every member of PPNC has an impact on PPNC’s ability to help each of us improve our craft, engage and retain current members, and strengthen the ability to recruit new members. Below is a detailed description of the strategy that is under construction. Your input is welcomed. Three areas of focus are Recruit: Create relationships with the photography programs at North Carolina colleges, universities and institutes, and introduce PPNC to professional photographers across the state. Retain: Understand members’ needs. Provide excellent educational programming. Create a mentoring network. Engage new members: Understand the needs and expectations of new members. Build a new approach to the orientation and assimilation of new members into PPNC.

For details about these actions and for more about the strategy, read on. The work began with the collective input of new and seasoned members across the Guilds. The outline presented here is a jumping off place and there is plenty of room for your thoughts. Recruit The potential for recruitment includes a rich mixture of established professional photog-

raphers, seasoned amateurs who are on the path to becoming professionals and students who are emerging from photography programs at our colleges, universities and art institutes. A variety of approaches that enhance our ability to communicate on behalf of PPNC and increase our success in recruiting new members includes:

New Members Joe Ciarlante 5403 Fewell Road Clover, NC 29710 704-756-1481 www.ciarlante.com joe@ciarlante.com

1. Create a relationship and establish a presence at each college, university or art institute in NC that has a photography program. a. Establish a database of PPNC photographers that would be willing to serve as guest speakers to provide content and represent PPNC in classes and at programs at these colleges, universities and art institutes. (Granting a PPNC merit for this activity has been proposed.) b. Appoint a PPNC liaison for each photography program. The liaison will be a seasoned PPNC member who can build the relationship with their assigned program. They will build the partnership between PPNC and the program, identify the program’s need for PPNC guest speakers, and communicate the value that a PPNC membership can have for the students that are future professional photographers. An Action Team member from each Guild will provide overall coordination for the programs that fall geographically in their Guild and will participate in recruiting and matching PPNC guest speakers with those programs. c. Provide a guest membership to the Carolina Photo Expo (CPE) and Seminars to a key faculty member of each college, university and art institute.

Seminars/CPE and through the continued openness of the Board to members’ ideas. · Provide excellent and relevant programming through Seminars, Proshares and CPE. · Continue to strengthen the fiscal position of PPNC so that the organization can evolve new and better ways to serve our members. · Establish a mentoring platform that will provide formal and informal avenues for all members who seek mentoring. The mentoring platform can be built through the following approaches: a. Guide: Establish a directory (by Guild) of PPNC members that could guide new and/or underactive members through the PPNC start-up process for things like establishing a login for the webpage; recording what credits are and how to record them; explaining the degree process; learning about print competition; the importance of attending Seminars, Shoot Socials, ProShares and CPE; how to volunteer, how to find the resources they seek, finding a career mentor or whatever the new member needs. b. Mentor: Establish a pool of PPNC members that would be willing to mentor another member with individual guidance in their business or content area (weddings, portraits, commercial, business practices, etc.) This is currently done fairly successfully for some. Others don’t know how to ask for this kind of help. c. Competition Mentor: Master Photographers continue to offer portfolio and print critiques at the Carolina Photo Expo.

2. Continue to reach out to established professional photographers who want to improve their craft and build their businesses. 3. Approach camera and photo clubs in the state and offer them free admission to the Trade Show, invite them to attend the Print Judging at CPE and communicate the role that a PPNC membership could play in their continued growth in their professional careers or toward becoming professionals. 4. Develop an awareness of other photography education organizations that support emerging photographers in NC, such as Look3 and the southeast region of the Society for Photographic Education. 5. Improve the visibility of PPNC when ‘photography education’ is browsed on the Internet. Retention The retention of members (new and old) depends on providing value. Each of us defines that value differently. It might be the technical education, the improvement of business practices, having the fellowship of other photographers, the stimulation of the creative process or many other things. Most members stay in PPNC because it enriches their lives and their craft. Tools for retention of all members may include: · Determine what members need and want through an annual survey (similar to this year’s survey), through discussions at

Engage New (and Underactive) Members Given PPNC’s potential reach, our new members could span the gamut from fresh-outof-school photographers to seasoned photog22

raphers. As we attract new members, it is to our advantage to orient, engage and fuel the desire to become active participants from the start. To do this successfully, we need to understand who they are, what they need and why they have joined. New member engagement: · Develop a new member survey to assess his/her background, expectations of PPNC and their needs. Consider linking the collection of this information with the application process. · Host an educational session, specifically targeting new members (for their first two years), at every Seminar and CPE. The program content would have broad application to both seasoned and new professionals. · Reinvent both the new member reception and new member orientation at CPE. · Build a team that would help new members find their niche within PPNC to increase the likelihood that new members will attend the Seminars, Shoot Socials, ProShares and CPE. (This overlaps with the Guides described under Retention.) · Implement an annual follow-up survey for new members in each of the first 3 years to assess what they are getting from and giving to PPNC. · Consider having a new member hotline in the form of an email address where they can ask quick questions and get answers or adapt the PPNC Facebook page for this purpose. · Expand the focus of the CPE New Member Committee into a year-round effort to oversee new member and retention activities.

Progress Since the February 17, 2017 post on the PPNC Facebook page, a few things have happened. The schools have been contacted. Carteret, ECU, and McDowell have asked for speakers and named liaisons. PPNC speakers have been scheduled at two schools. The Living Arts School and the Art Institute of Charlotte have expressed interest in collaborating with us and we are working on connecting with them. An educational session for new members was held during the Spring Seminar. It was well-received and a few of the attendees are becoming active in PPNC. Consider what actions you can take to help grow the business of photography in North Carolina through PPNC. To take one of the following actions, to provide feedback, to contribute an idea, or find out what other actions you can take, contact an Action Team member (below) and copy Chris Adamczyk so that your interest can be added to the database. Actions: 1. Join the Speaker’s list for one of the schools in your Guild. 2. Volunteer to be a Mentor or Guide. 3. Indicate if you are looking for a Mentor. 4. Volunteer for the New Member Committee. 5. Contact an Action Team Member to learn other ways to get involved. We are off to a good start, and we look forward to everyone’s involvement!
