This has been an exciting year for PPNC. Our Carolina Photo Expo will definitely be among the largest, brightest and the most fun we have ever had. We are extremely fortunate to have a wonderul Expo team, and PPNC Board dedicated, focused, and hard working guiding our PPNC onward to a path of excellence. This event will not soon forgotten. Look further in the content for a sneak preview of the great speakers. We have a great panel of judges for Print Competition. It will be interesting to see how many people enter prints this year. There is nothing like having your print hung in the Court of Honor on display throughout the Expo. Needless to say, get going on those competition prints and get them ready, you only have a few weeks to go, and good luck! From the President The school bell is ringing in North Carolina at the Carolina Photo Expo, being held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Conference Center in Durham, North Carolina.
This is the 88th Annual Expo presented by the Professional Photographers of North Carolina. As I reflect on the past five years of my committment to PPNC, there have been tremendous change in our industry. We realize PPNC has had to make changes in order to look to the future growth. I am excited about the changes that we have made as we move forward. The organization understands that for PPNC to grow, we must address the needs and concerns of our current and future members. New Members are the life blood of any association. We must be willing to accept aspiring photographers into the fold, and provide them with the resources they need to be successful. It has been my experience that PPNC members have always been willing to help fellow photographers whether they are a beginner or a master. Therefore, I challenge the leadership to develop and adopt policies and procedures to help make that happen.The New Member Welcome committee has worked very hard in that vein. Our Carolina Photo Expo Committee has lined up top-notch speakers with great program itineraries. You will be: wooed, astounded, revitalized, refilled, and expand your education! Many successful photographers today are switching part…if not all… of their business model from high-end custom portraiture to the down-anddirty world of volume school & sports photography. With the influx of so many new portrait photographers in our industry, making a living as a professional photographer is proving to be a challenging task. Bringing photographic expertise to the world of volume photography has been an intimidating, yet very rewarding, experience for many. We have been successfully bridging the gap between volume photographs and custom portraits in our area over the past four years. We are the “go to” photographers in our area for schools and leagues who want something different than what the “big boys” in the volume industry can produce.
We are the trend-setters for volume photography in our region, with those same “big boys” scrambling to reproduce our style. All the while, we are creating the relationships necessary to facilitate the growth of our custom portrait studio. Dance School Photography. When not producing great photographs, he enjoys traveling and sharing his knowledge of image making. Today, Adrian is heavily involved with his state organization (Profession Photographers of North Carolina) as well as PPA as a council member. Adrian regularly travels throughout the country, and even overseas, teaching and speaking. Adrian has been accepted as an International Print Committee Juror by PPA. He is also very committed to print competition and has been honored with the Diamond, Platinum, Gold and Bronze awards as well as NC’s and SEPPA’s Photographer of the year awards multiple times, just to name a few. Adrian won the Overall 20X16 print award in 2014 and was the Natural World category winner in 2015 at The Societies convention in the UK. Adrian considers print competition the greatest informal education and owes
Pre-Con Class Friday August 12 Being successful when using Photoshop involves doing things fast and efficiently. With the fast and efficient criteria in mind, this course will cover many techniques for retouching eyes, skin and hair. We will also show you some Photoshop fixes for body shape, color saturation, and light. Other topics for this course are extractions, changing background, color changes and modifications, maximizing the use of your drawing table (Wacom), and file maintenance. We will also cover using add-on filters such as Nik and Topaz. For this course you will need your laptop or computer loaded with Photoshop CS 5 or greater and at the minimum Nik Filters, Topaz is optional. You will need to bring 5 or 6 portrait images to work on since the best way to learn something is to do it. This course will also include using Photoshop painting techniques that will help you in retouching so a Wacom or similar tablet is recommended but not required. Mona holds a four year degree in Accounting from East Carolina University. This was a result of getting sidetracked many years ago where she started out going to college for a degree in Photography at Daytona Beach State College. Her goal was always to return to photography which was facilitated when digital cameras arrived. As she worked her way up through print competition Mona’s interest in Photoshop grew when she painted a bird that made it into the International Print Competition loan collection. She has been learning and painting in Photoshop ever since with enough images to earn her many photographer of the year awards in each level including a diamond for her 2015 Photographic Open case. Mona is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Professional Photographer. She is a Master Photographer, Master Artist, and has the Craftsman degrees and the Image Excellence Award. Her other interests are birding, fishing, and camping. She lives with three rescued dogs and enjoys doing a lot of painting in Photoshop.

CHILDREN’S CHARACTER PORTRAITS IN BLACK AND WHITE with Pete Rezac,MPH,CR,CPP
This class will teach you how Pete creates his award winning black and white character portraits of children using traditional lighting and posing but with minimal props. In this handson-class, Pete will guide you through the entire process from creation through post-production. You will learn everything from how to successfully consult with the client, to the styling, lighting, and posing of the child, as well as the finishing techniques to create these authentic unique childrleln's portraits. This is a full day program and be prepared to have some fun and create some authentic black & white children's character portraits. Pete Rezac is a Master Photographer, Photographic Craftsman and Certified Professional Photographer. Having worked as a professional photographer since 2003, Pete puts more than a decade’s experience behind each portrait. He is a frequent educator on all aspects of the craft of photography, including lighting, posing, and composition, and is a nationally approved Certification prep class instructor. Pete is a nationally acclaimed portrait photographer with his work earning numerous honors. In 2015, Pete was named the Children’s Portrait Photographer of the Year, the Certified Professional Photographer of the Year, and had the number six highest scoring print case for the Professional Photographers of California print competition. In 2015, Pete was
a Platinum Medalist Photographer of the Year with 3 of his images accepted into the prestigious Loan Collection. He also had a Top 10 Grand Imaging Award Image in the Children’s Portrait Category. In 2014, Pete was a Gold Medalist Photographer of the Year for the Professional Photographers of America International Photographic Competition with 2 of his images being accepted into the prestigious Loan Collection. Pete was the over all top donor in 2015 for his work to support Operation Smile as part of PPA Charities Celebration of Smile day, in addition he earned best portrait of a Child, best portrait of a Pet, and Overall Best Portrait for the 2015 Celebration of Smiles day portrait contest. In 2013, Pete Rezac Photography earned the second place honors for a portrait of an adult for PPA Charities Celebration of Smiles Day benefiting Operation Smile. Pete also earned a Kodak Gallery Award for best portrait in Professional Photographer’s of America’s Western States District Print Competition in 2012. 14

Professional Photographers of North Carolina, Inc. General Business Meeting Sheraton Imperial, Durham, NC August 16, 2015 The Professional Photographers of North Carolina General Business Meeting was held on August 16, 2015 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham, NC. Chairman of the Board, Bruce Williamson called the meeting to order and led the meeting’s Invocation. Bruce also acknowledged PPA President Michael Timmons was present.
1.0 Tim Hester recorded more than 76 were present which was needed for a quorum. It was determined that a quorum was met. 2.0 The previous meeting minutes were given in a hand out. Rex Truell made a motion to accept with Cathy Anderson providing the Second. The motion was approved. 3.0 The Treasurers report as given by Adrian Henson, the final numbers from CPE would be available after October 1st. 4.0 Ellis Williams gave the opening address and annual report. He stated that organization developed a new website and continued the development of the CPE site. Seminars were all well attended with 236 photographers attending the various events. Goals were to get back to the basics of lighting and posing. Conference calls with seasoned photographers, shoot socials were created to try to achieve this along with being able to work with new gear in a live shoot environment. “This has been an exciting year.” We are on top of new trends in photography but not at the expense of good lighting and posing. He also thanked the convention team for a job well done. 5.0 Committee Reports 5.1 Member Report was presented by Tim Hester. There are now 366 members of PPNC with 80 new members since the previous CPE 5.2 Unethical Practices – No Report 5.3 Charter and Bylaws – No Report 5.4 Legal & Legislative – No Report 5.5 Standard Operating Guide – Bruce Williamson reported the SOG is up to date and is now on the website. 5.6 Carolina Photographic Foundation – Cassie Stone reported Dannie Daniels and Bruce Williamson were added to the Foundation Board. The Memorials report was given by Loretta Byrd for Cindy Smith, Chairman. A moment of silence in honor of those listed was observed. Scholarships – Cassie Stone reported there are 8 scholarships to be given and there were 3 new member scholarships to be given. Cassie also reported was $800 collected from the past President’s Lunch and the Sheraton Imperial matched that donation to bring the total to $1600. 5.7 Marketing and Communications – Rose Mary Cheek reported work was continuing on the website and the Magazine has been building over the past year. She asked new members to place an article. She also reported PPNC has Instagram, Facebook, Internet and Constant Contact as ways to reach existing and potential members. 5.8 2015 Carolina Photo Expo – Karen York thanked everyone for being a part of this year’s expo. Craig reported that with 209 members, 137 trade show additions and attendance in Parrish’s class brought the total to 416 for 2015 attendance. 18
5.9 Degree Program – Bruce Williamson reminded every one the degree credits are given for service and prints. With only one paid staff member, events like CPE were put on by people stepping up. It’s a total team effort and there will be a lot of service awards given tomorrow night. 5.10 SEPPA - Rose Mary Cheek reported in May, SEPPA’s Flash event, had to be canceled because of hotel issues; however, the Southeastern District Print Competition was held and went well. PPNC came away with the district traveling trophy for the highest print cases recorded. She also reported that a new model is being looked at in regards to the future of SEPPA. 5.11 PPA report was given by Janet Boschker. She reported Rose Mary Cheek, Cassie Stone, Loretta Byrd and Joy Batchelor-King attended the PPA Council meeting. PPA is a family that has nearly 30,000 members. The See the Difference campaign provides photographers with assets to compete in today’s market and the Be More campaign gives photographers a path to follow through education, competition and certification and the merit degree program. PPNC members receiving a Master’s Degree are Brian Allen and Tom McCabe, with Dave Thompson receiving his Craftsman Degree. 6.0 Seminar Reports 6.1 2015 Spring Seminar – J Marshall White reported the Eastern Seminar had 66 attending and made a profit of $910.33. 2016 Spring Seminar - Tom McCabe reported that the event would be held in Greenville at East Carolina University on Saturday and Sunday March 19-20 with a shootout on Friday evening. He also was looking into motels and asked for members who were looking for credits towards their Craftsman Degree to contact him about speaking. 6.2 2015 Winter Seminar – Misty Felde reported 80 were in attendance with a profit of $547.05. 2016 Winter Seminar –Bob Henderson gave the report for Rene McCardell. He reported that the event will be held at the Greensboro Holiday Inn – Airport on January 23-25th. 6.3 2014 Fall Seminar – Debbie Johnson reported the seminar all came together using a Team approach. 90 Members attended with a net profit from the event of $258.47. 2015 Fall Seminar – Chris Garner reported the fall seminar would be held on October 17th and 18th in Marion. Speakers will include Katie Cook and James and Jenny Tarply will be speaking on Whitespace, Finding the Balance. 6.4 Long Range Planning – Loretta Byrd reported the next Long Range Planning meeting would be held on October 4-5 at the Sheraton Imperial. This would include both long range committee member and board members. 6.5 History & Archives – No Report 7.0 East Coast School Report. Rex Truell reported the revenue and expenses totaled up to $2,656.94 of net income. He also reported the school purchased a new lap top computer and software for ECS and PPNC use. The school also made a donation of $1330.00 to the general fund of PPNC. He thanked the ECS team for a job well done. Those members are Cindy Smith, Ned Winn, Dannie Daniel, and Loretta Byrd. The 2016 ECS is scheduled for June 12-15 at the Holiday Inn Downtown Raleigh with Fuller Royal, Chris and Deanna Duncan, Eric Richards, Richard Sturdevant, and John Gladman teaching. 8.0 Cassie Stone presented the Nominating Committee Report. and wedding photographer in 1994. Based near Chicago, he now divides his time between commercial, fine art and commissioned fine art images with his clients as the central subject of his pieces. His conceptual fine art images utilize real world photographs blended and manipulated to create an alternative to real world perception. Thom also lectures and teaches workshops on topics ranging from Photoshop as an artist’s tool, visual literacy and lighting and posing for figure studies. Thom holds the PPA Master of Photography degree, the Award of Excellence, the Master of Electronic Imaging degree, and the Photographic Craftsman degree. Youth Sports Photographer and Trainer Jeff Gump, founder of one of the country’s most successful youth sports photography businesses, is perhaps even better known as a speaker and trainer of photographers across the nation. Gump declared himself a professional as a photographer at the age of 15 and today Gump’s Sports Photography has shot well over a million young people and is still growing strong from headquarters and staff in Jacksonville, Florida. PURPOSE The purpose of this competition is to challenge photographers’ creativity and allow them to match their work against that of their peers. Photographic prints and albums will be judged relative to the 12 Elements of a Merit Print. mension at 4,000 pixels (20 inches at 200 ppi), have an embedded color profile of either sRGB or Adobe RGB 1998 and be saved at a JPEG quality setting of 10. Each page/spread file may contain as many images as you desire. An entry shall contain a minimum 5 page/spread files up to 36 page/spread files. Files are to be numbered in viewing order using two digits (i.e. 01.jpg, 02.jpg, 03.jpg, etc.) All individual files must be compressed into a single ZIP FILE. ZIP file must be named: Album Title.zip (i.g. Summer Wedding.zip.) Studio identification or entrant’s name cannot appear on any file within the album entry.
NOTE: Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification of entry. The decision of the Print Salon Committee is final.

The Story of our EAST COAST SCHOOL Celebrating 60 years of Education for PPNC Members

Chances are if you have been a PPNC member for a few years or for decades, you have reaped the benefits of attending East Coast School. Having been a part of our association for 60 years, it seems a great time to review the history. Think everyone will gleam something new and of interest in this story. Most of this information is assembled from an article by Rick Gibbons for the 50th anniversary of the school in 2007, from the “Blue Book� edited in 1973 by Peggy Howell and from Rex Truell who is currently the school director as we approach the 60th anniversary. While a lot of these names will not be familiar, you may know their children that are still active members of our association. So here goes. Let us start with Homer Ball and Tim Hord. Homer Ball was president of PPNC in 1957 and Tim Hord owned a leading studio in Charlotte, which passed, to his daughter Timmy. Tim was an expert retoucher/artist and PPNC president in 62
1953. Two more names you may not recognize are Ed Simons (PPNC president in 1956) and Zeno Spence. These four names share one historical event in common: The first PPNC SPONSORED SUMMER SCHOOL, June 24-26, 1957 at the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in Southern Pines. Two courses were offered: three days of portrait painting taught by Zeno Spence and an all day pricing workshop with Ed Simons and Tim Hord. A few weeks later, Tim Hord also taught a three-day course in retouching at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown High Point, August 5-7. Records indicate the painting class enrolled 19 and the retouching class enrolled 21. No record of the pricing class is available but the three classes were self supporting and popular enough to attempt again the next year. In 1958, Burnie Batchelor, PPNC Life-member, past president (1963), began negotiations with State College in Raleigh, (now NC State University) to
hold PPNC SUMMER SHORT COURSE, through their Extension Division. Also in 1958, Homer Ball, Education Committee Chairman for PPNC, entertained an idea from Sue Sample of Statesville (PPNC president 1965). Sue writes: “why couldn’t we receive unit credits toward our (PPA) degree if we had a five-day accredited course, similar to a course at Winona?” She reasoned that many PPNC members would never be able to attend Winona because of the distance, expense and time away. Winona courses were the only ones receiving credit toward PPA’s Master degree. She went on to argue that if PPNC’s classes met all the standards of the PPA curriculum, used the same instructors as Winona and the same classroom hours, why shouldn’t such a class earn merits applicable to a PPA degree? Consequently in July 1958, during the council meeting at the PPA national convention in Chicago, PPA councilman Lewis Watson and Burnie Batchelor,
proxy for Don Barber, argued for a proposal submitted in writing by North Carolina, asking if Winona trustees could establish or sponsor extension courses for which merits might be granted. Council immediately envisioned lots of red tape with Bylaw changes and potential competition taking students away from Winona but Watson articulated: “we do not propose to put on any school in competition with Winona. It is simply giving Winona an opportunity to extend their wonderful work into the different areas of the country by sponsoring these schools and having direct supervision over the faculty and the accomplishments that are required to obtain these merits.” It took one year to work out the particulars, but PPA merits were received by students in three classes at the 1959 PPNC summer school, apparently giving birth to the PPA AFFILIATE SCHOOL system, as we know it today. What great vision by these leaders of PPNC that opened educational opportunities to photographers all over the county. These are the details of the early school. Through the contacts of Burnie 63
Batchelor, NC State University continued to host these photographic classes as part of the continuing education department. The summer school was administered by the NCSU staff, Kelly Crump and later Alice Warren, of the NCSU McKimmon Center. During the NCSU years, PPNC had no financial stake in the school. Profit, break-even or loss was all on the continuing education program of State. This arrangement worked well for many years until budget cuts at the McKimmon Center dictated that many programs be cut. In 1993, following the school, NCSU decided to dismantle the program. Rex Truell was the director at this time and the board of PPNC charged him with a future plan for the PPNC School. Initially the plan was for PPNC to become financially responsible for the school. If we were to continue with the McKimmon Center Continuing Educa-
tion Program, they would now require a $10,000 deposit to carry on with our summer school. As director, Rex, went to the PPNC board of directors and made a formal request of $10,000 seed money for the school. The board ultimately denied the request. PPNC did not have funds available to enable the school to continue. These decisions by the board of PPNC are what prompted members of our association to step up for the future education of photographers in this area. The nucleus of the current East Coast School, as we know it today was in the making. Passionate members of our association were unwilling to simply let the school die. Phil Aull, Dean Craddock, Rick Alexander, Rick Gibbons, Rex Truell and there may have been others, decided they would each pledge to put up seed money for the school to continue. If the school succeeded, the 64
monies would be repaid but if they did not, at least the educational goals of PPNC would be given a chance. These were pledges for the money and no actual cash ever changed hands. Rex went back to the McKimmon Center and negotiated a plan that would have them administer the program. This plan included them both receiving the tuition payments and paying the bills. As the McKimmon Center was handling all of the money, we never had to actually make the $10,000 deposit. This plan included a set fee for the McKimmon Center duties and space. Once those fees were covered, the school and NCSU would split the remainder of the funds. This was the 1994 Summer Program. We had an enrollment of 67 and cleared about $20,000. Split two ways, we now had seed money for our own school of $10,000. This arrangement continued for another year. We had managed to build the school back. The McKimmon Center had raised their fee to the point that we needed to move forward with a new direction and a new location. A board independent of PPNC was formed. With its own board, separate budget and funds to run the school, the school was moved to the Sheraton Imperial in 1995. The name EAST COAST SCHOOL name was chosen to broaden the scope of participants beyond North Carolina. East Coast School is an affiliate school of the Professional Photographers of America. The original East Coast School Board consisted of Rex Truell, Director, Loretta Byrd, registrar, Phil Aull, Mark Barnett, 65
Janet Boschker, Rick Gibbons, Jan Homan, Cindy Smith and Ken Tart. The school grew steadily as did the profits. These funds have been invested wisely and have been used to endow the ECS Scholarship, purchase projectors used by ECS and PPNC updated the ECS/PPNC laptop computer and software. The school remained at the Sheraton Imperial until rate increases deemed that we needed another venue. In 2006 (?) the school moved to the Sheraton in Downtown Raleigh. After 2013, the school moved once again to the Holiday Inn in downtown Raleigh where the school is scheduled 2014-2017. Thanks to the vision of the East Coast School board with a true passion for the art and education of photography, the East Coast School remains a fluid organization and one of the nation’s finest professional photography workshops and the continuing education arm of the PPNC. We are thankful for the East Coast School story we know today and for the opportunities it offers. You’ll learn where you stand—how your photography matches up with your peers. You’ll learn about the 12 elements of a merit image, and start incorporating them into your daily photography. You’ll learn what it takes to create a merit image, and if you stick with it, work your way up to the Loan Collection. You’ll learn you’re capable of so much more than you imagined. It’s perfectly normal to be a little nervous going in, but don’t be afraid of getting better. It’s easy to get involved. Fine-tune your best images and submit either prints or digital copies.
For Local Competitions… New to the game? Get your feet wet by competing in your PPA affiliated local guilds or association competitions. It will help ease your nerves and feel things out you will score a round of critiquing, increasing your chances for success at the next level. All photographic competitions are open to the public, and it’s the best way to maximize your learning potential. New Members Entering for the first time… PPNC has an award called the President’s Award; it is specifically for a first time entrant only. The most important thing about this award it is that it is calculated on a cumulative total of 6 images. This is where new members make a mistake, they are so excited to enter competition and are not aware of this award and enter one or two prints. And once you have entered, then you are no longer eligible for the President’s award. So I try to explain and encourage new members to wait a little before they enter competitionand find a mentor. There are many in our association who will help you. When you enter your very first competition, be sure you have six entries. New Dues Procedures PPNC Dues are now billed on an anniversary basis. That means if you pay your dues in May, your 2017 dues will be due in May again. The online payment schedule will allow you to pay three months before your actual dues date. For those members attending the Carolina Photo Expo, you must pay your 2016 dues before registering to attend. Payment options are on line, check, or you can pay monthly.
New this Year at the Carolina Photo Expo! At the Carolina Photo Expo, you will have a chance to attend round table sessions in the evening. These sessions will have a facilitator and discussion will be held on photographic items such as marketing, business, procedures, etc.
