ROTOROA ISLAND

MOTUIHE ISLAND

An island apart...

Discover paradise...

Just over an hour from Auckland, Rotoroa Island combines a rich social history with beautiful beaches, walking trails, heritage buildings, art, boutique accommodation, a wildlife sanctuary and an award-winning museum.

Motuihe is an island paradise on Auckland’s doorstep. Showcasing two magnificent white sand beaches, breath-taking landscapes and pastures, and exquisite views of Auckland, this island is truly a heavenly day out. Perfect for day trips, picnics, swimming and sunbathing.

Opened to the public in 2011, the island was formerly a Salvation Army addiction treatment centre, initially a jail and finally a facility for recovery. This legacy of salvation is being continued today through a partnership with Auckland Zoo that will see up to 20 species of endangered native animal released on Rotoroa over the next 10 years. The first animal releases will occur in late 2014.

Motuihe flourishes with native flora and rare and endangered birdlife thanks to the restoration efforts of the Motuihe Trust and Department of Conservation. Its colourful history of Maori and European influences, remnants of pa sites, European farming settlements, prisoner of war camps, and ruins from the old naval base can also be freely explored. Set up camp and lay under the stars for the night. Campsites can be booked through the Department of Conservation.

Rotoroa is open for day trips, weekend stays, events and corporate meetings. It has three self-contained holiday homes and a boutique hostel.
