Editor’s Letter

No magazine is the same without one

Foreword

Tumelo Phosa

I AM VERY EXCITED

at the opportunity to write this letter to you, because I am thrilled to introduce to you a fresh and exciting Plus Size fashion magazine; Full Flair magazine “The curvy girls’ guide to fashion and style”. I have been a subscriber to many fashion magazines in the past, but after a while noticed that they aren't geared for me. I couldn't possibly pull off most of the trends in the magazines like the bodycon, ultra-short minis and over revealing shorts that would leave me feeling more selfconscious than sexy. Other than the lifestyle tips I couldn't relate to the content in the pages, especially not the core focus of the magazine which is fashion. Full Flair has fashion tips for decades. Upon realising that I am not the only one who felt that way, I embarked on a journey to join the plus size revolution, and help create space for us. A South African magazine for the trendy plus size woman, size 12+, that will have the great advantage of being a “for us, by us” publication, I have had the honour to live my whole life in this gorgeous curvy body, and who better knows what a curvy girl wants than a curvy girl? Find beauty and hair trending tips on and get to understand things from a man's perspective . A girl has to know her worth, love herself and celebrate her uniqueness, which is what Full Flair magazine promotes; women who are not afraid of stepping out and showing the world that they too are gorgeous in every way, like Meg de Jong . And I am really looking forward to walking the journey with you, sharing every moment and enjoying all the highs and lows that will come with it. Happy Read! XOXO!

Blog Review

Blogger Style Crush mindthecurves.com, which as the name suggests is a plus size blog about body positivity; plus size fashion and lifestyle. FULL FLAIR got the opportunity to know more about the blog site and its founder, Meg De Jong

Blog Review What is your style mantra? Feel good in what you wear.

What are your 5 Winter must-haves? An electric blanket, my Nespresso coffee machine, good skin care, warm boots and a snugly jersey.

What advice do you have for plus size women on style? Always wear things that you feel good in. It doesn't matter if it's fashionable or not, if it makes you feel amazing, your confidence will shine through and you'll look amazing.

3 people that you would invite to dinner?

What inspired you to start blogging? There was a huge gap in the South African market about this topic I'm so passionate about. Body positivity and helping women empower themselves is something I care so very deeply about, it was something I felt stirred to do.

US plus-size style blogger Anna of Glitter and Lazers because she's hilarious, Marilyn Monroe because I feel she would be interesting. And, although it might be a cliché, Nelson Mandela, as I am so inspired and humbled by him.

Where do you draw your confidence from? Confidence is a journey. I've found mine as I've got to know myself better, and began to trust that I can do whatever I set my mind to.

Who is your style icon? Hmmm, tough one I can't say that I have a specific style icon, but I'm very inspired by the style of the '50s.

"If you don’t live for something, you’ll die for nothing” - Meg De Jong

Shoes

Celebrity women are obsessed with them, actually every woman

Put your Best There are diamonds and chocolates; hand bags, clothes and convertibles, all qualify to be a girl's best friend, but the one friend that has stood the test of time is the shoe. Ballet flats, heels, boots, strap sandals, mules and wedges, women lust over and are obsessed with shoes! You know the feeling you get when you walk into a shoe store, and wonder which pair you must try on first? Yeap, it’s an obsession!

is, but what kind of friendship do you have with your shoes?

Foot Forward Shoes have been around for centuries and millenniums, despite their necessity they have become a girl's best friend. Women have built monuments to put these prized possessions to live in, and have thus been the envy of every one of their girlfriends and intsagram followers. Women go to many lengths just to ďŹ nd the perfect pair and not only that these shoes get the royal treatment, live in a palace call the closet. They really receive the best friend treatment. Like best friends they are always there for us, unlike clothes they will never outgrow our feet, and of cause are there with us every step of the way. The drunken moments at the club all the way to the job interview. Lindsay Lohan's shoes were right there with her when she was jailed for her countless DUI's, so yes they are our friends, but what kind of friends are they?

This drape dress is perfect! The Empire waistline draws attention to the smallest part of your waist.

The pear body shape is slimmer up top with fuller hips. The perfect dress for this body type is the LBD (little black dress.)

While the draping across the hips gives an illusion of fuller hips which adds proportion to your body.

The colour black slims the body; this means that the wider hip area will be brought in to add proportion to the tinier upper body. This particular dress is more flattering because of the rouging across the bust and midriff area, which adds a fuller look on the areas that matter.

Leera Mthethwa, 24. I'm an actress by qualification, Curvy Model by choice and self titled “Body Positivity Activist” by right. Being a curvy model has given me the platform to stand up for curvy women, raise awareness about self-love, and help instill confidence in curvy women who feel they're less of a woman because of their beautiful curvaceous bodies and society's opinion.

Moratuoa Desirre “Dezâ€? Lekhoaba, 21 Modeling is fun, glitz and glam, lights and camera; but to me it's a second voice. I'm not a model because of the couture, no. I'm a model because I want to ignite controversial conversations, reveal and face challenges swept under the carpet. I'm a model because I want to encourage change, shake perceptions, heal scars and allow freedom to reign. I want to give back what belongs to all plus size women, conďŹ dence and self-love.

Ashley Olson, 20 Have you ever seen a blonde? I'm sure you have. What was your ďŹ rst thought? Oh, she's probably mean and rude, right? Well I'm not your typical bubblegum blonde. Once you get to know me you'll see how friendly and sweet I actually am. I am embracing the curve loving revelation that we have created. In my journey I want to change hundreds of curvy ladies' lives. If I only change 1 person's life perspective of themselves, then I know I have done what I wanted to.

Busisiwe Khumalo, 21 I was born in Thembisa and raised in the township of Alexandra, Johannesburg. Being a curvy model means being an ambassador who represents voluptuous self-love and beauty. It means being able to encourage other curvy women to embrace their beautiful bodies at all times: to love, accept and take pleasure in their own bodies. It means using my conďŹ dence and abilities to change the size of the fashion industry to be exible for all sizes, shapes and heights.

Seipati Masango, 28 I was born in Katlehong in the East Rand. I work in the construction industry as a Human Resources Administrator. I'm passionate about my career and I'm still continuing with studying HR further. The journey of finding myself in a race to be a curvy model has taught me to love the size I am. I have grown to know that beauty starts within me. We come out winners to say being “fat” does not mean I'm unhealthy, it means I'm curvaceous and God loved me so much he supersized me.

Nthabiseng Naomi Monaisa, 24 I was born and bred in the North West. I'm a driven, fearless and passionate person. I'm very ambitious, curious, positive and lively: when I'm in a room, everything lights up. I love challenges; I'm a natural leader and very energetic in everything I do. The idea of being a curvy model to me means everything. I get to aunt my curves, handles, aws and all with conďŹ dence; and over and above that, I am helping others accept and appreciate their size and body.

Gizelle Fredericks, 32 Becoming a curvy model is a learning and fulďŹ lling experience; not only am I learning about the industry but I'm also learning that there are so many other women who are in such support of each other. As much as doing photo shoots and getting glammed up is fun, what makes me proud is that I'm part of a bigger community of women all over the world who celebrate being curvy! Personally this journey has been so eye opening, in terms of wanting to become a working model. I could not be happier that these curves have brought me tears, frustration, confusion, laughs and joy. Love and embrace you because happy curvy girls are happy women!

Sekhotali Seeiso, 22 I am a bubbly and humble woman who loves all the good and gracious things in life and who will work hard to achieve anything put before her. I'm a conďŹ dent girl who walks with pride and her head held up high. Being a model means a lot to me. I have learned loads of things on this journey. It's not all about being small or big; it's about understanding the game. Being plus size is a huge part of my life: some love it and some hate it but I have always treasured my curves and made sure to keep them in good health.

I never thought that being a model would be something I would get into and love. Firstly, I'm short and secondly, I have always been a chubby girl, (fat rather before I grew into my curves). Being a curvy model is not easy from being a vulnerable canvas on set, having people tell you what they want from you, getting bad criticism on social media for having too much cellulite or stretch marks. It's a difďŹ cult thing. As much as it is hard, it's also rewarding. I've learnt to love being in my own skin. I've found joy in encouraging other women to love who they are. I think my only insecurity now is being the smallest girl out of these beautiful curvy women, IMAGINE! There is no happiness like getting an inbox from a woman with a low self esteem saying "I love what you do". Something I never even thought I would ourish in, bringing hope to another life.

Precious Baloyi, 23 34

Noluthando Tsidi Kentane, 34 Durban born, Cape Town raised and now an independent individual residing in Johannesburg. Give me some lighthearted fun, music or a challenge and I'm right at home. I started modeling because of encouragement from friends. Little did I know that I would turn out to be a positive inuence to women. It is important to always keep a positive attitude no matter what you do because someone out there is gaining strength from your one "little" action.

Inspiration

Tess Holliday Plus-Size doesn't mean unable! I have often heard plus-size women talk about the “fat barrier”, which is supposed to be a term synonymous to the glass ceiling. A term used for the refusal to acknowledge the advancement of women in particular and any other minority groups. This term suggests that plus-size women are prejudiced because of their body size that they can't get ahead in life and get passed up for promotions. What nonsense, plus-size women have been making it big for decades, in their respective professions and some have went on to excel in their crafts. Although the issue of size has been an ongoing debate for years, women have rebelled against societies standards of beauty and what is acceptable. Women like Tess Holliday, have redefined these standards and gone beyond barriers. Tess Holliday is the first Size 26 model who has been signed to a “mainstream” modelling agency. She has broken into an industry that is deemed to be cutthroat when it comes to matters of size. I'm quite impressed at how plus-size women are expressing their self-awareness and celebrating who they are. You only live once, love yourself and take care of yourself. An unhealthy lifestyle is not just about what you feed your body, but also what you feed you mind. My concern is not that such a term exists, but the fact that there are women who actually believe and entertain this notion.

The Boy Was Mine First “Justified Mistress”

The Boy Was Mine First It was at was on chilly winter's day when we first laid eyes on each other at a sales meeting, he was the most handsome man I had ever seen, our eyes locked. I knew then and there that I liked him, he was my type; he had dark chocolate skin, sparkling brown eyes and a well built physique (like a soccer player). He came up to me, and welcomed me to the team, he smelt so good. However the idea of an office romance was out of the question, I had just joined the company and I was really eager to get ahead, besides breaking the non-fraternisation policy was dismissible. I immediately stopped all thoughts of a future with him, you know; the thoughts of marriage and wondering what our kids would look like. I mean there was no way he could be interested in me, I wasn't the prettiest women in the world, the slimmest or even smartest and I was suffering from a severe case of low self-esteem. To my surprise he liked me back, he felt the same way. Yes I know I had said that I didn't want to get involved in office romances, but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity he could be my husband the father of my kids. I couldn't let that chance pass me by, but I still couldn't get over my insecurities, I played hard to get. He left the company shortly after my appointment; he apparently got a better job offer in KZN his hometown, and claimed that he wanted to explore greener pastures. I guess that was justifiable, because there was nothing keeping him in Johannesburg, at least not me and our beautiful babies. I lost all hope of us ever getting together, what were the chances of him not finding a gorgeous Zulu woman (a Minentle Dlamini lookalike); who would gladly walk into his strong chocolate arms.

38

Full Flair Magazine Copyright 2015. All rights reserved

5 months later I bumped to him at Mandela Square, apparently the grass wasn't greener on the other side “when the grass is greener on the side it means it has been well fertilized with s**t” those were his exact words. He was back In Johannesburg and gave me his numbers, but this time I wasn't going to miss out on the chance of getting with him. We started dating, things got serious fast we moved in together I really loved him. We often spoke about marriage and starting a family; actually he put a ring on it and promised to send delegates to my family to ask for my hand in marriage. Weeks became months and still nothing, he then said he had to go back to KZN for a week to prepare for lobola negotiations. I was so excited; I told everyone that I would be getting married soon. That weekend was hectic, between preparing for *Lwandle's family coming up for the lobola negotiations and my appointment at the gynaecologist; yes I was pregnant, left me very exhausted. But it was all worth it, pretty soon I would be married to the love of my life and our son Junior would be born. Later that day I received a call from my friend who asked me where Lwandle was, that was odd why would she ask me about Lwandle's whereabouts, she has never approved of our relationship in the very beginning.

Please turn to next page

Feature

The Boy Was Mine First Continued

But couldn't deny the fact that he chose her, he decided to walk out on us and marry a woman whom he barely knew and had a child by another man, he raised another man's child instead of his own. But that was fine it would only a matter of time until he realised that we were meant to be. Things became difficult between the two; the marriage was a sham to begin with anyway. He started reaching out to me and I was reluctant at the beginning, but he had every right to have a relationship with his son. I didn't want to stand between my son and his father; I couldn't live with myself if I were the cause of my son's unhappiness. Allowing Lwandle to spend time with his son meant that I was spending a lot of time with his too. The feelings I once had for him were racing back I couldn't control the love that I had for him. And seeing him with *Thandolwethu (our son) did not make things any easier; I wanted my family intact so badly.

What was she on about? She apparently had a mutual friend with Lwandle on Facebook, who had uploaded a picture of Lwandle with the caption “Congratulations Mr&Mrs *Mkhize”. I couldn't believe that she disliked Lwandle to the point that she would lie about him. So I decided to check for myself to put her lies to bed once and for all! To my shock it was all true, Lwandle went to KZN to get married to another woman, while I was at home preparing for Lobola negotiations and fantasizing about our future. I was distraught, devastated and couldn't handle it. I went into labour prematurely and was hospitalized for months because of thedepression. It turned out that the marriage was arranged, that his father had political ties with his wife's father and the marriage was all a business deal. I eventually got over the betrayal and forgave him, no matter what had happened he was the father of my beautiful son and to be honest I still loved him and wished that he would come back to us.

We started dating again, even though he put me through a very tough time I still loved him dearly, he was my soul mate, my one and only. I didn't care that he was married to her, he was mine first and I was determined to get him back. I was willing to do everything in my power to restore our relationship and build a perfect family. I badly wanted to break them up and get what was rightfully mine, but it wasn't easy. Lwandle is still married to her, she is contesting the divorce out of spite, I do not understand why though, she doesn't love him and neither does he, but why is she making things difficult for us? She's had a chance and I stepped aside and raised our son be myself all in respect for their marriage. However the dynamics have changed now they have realised that they aren't meant for each other, should I just walk away even though I know that Lwandle is my one and only and I his? For the love of my life I do not mind being a mistress forever. Being married doesn't mean anything to me right now, but his love means everything. I pray that she will come to her senses and let love be.

Hair

Lerato Wesi talks to us about hair; how to love and take care for it. Hair Treats for all types of hair: It's Seasonal!

A lot of people always wonder why their hair goes through so many changes. What they don't understand is that hair, just like the weather, it's seasonal. In order for you to have perfect hair, all year round, you need to treat it very well, like a car. It needs to be serviced, constantly. There are many hair treatments, but theydon't all work for everyone. You need to find a hair stylist, get a hair treatment especially custom made, for YOU! There are a few hair treatments that I have discovered; tried and tested, that work for me. You need to remember that you can't always stick to the same treatment, you need to always get your hair analyzed so you can keep up with the seasons. Chances are, your hair will look drier and your scalp a lot flakier than what it would in winter, as opposed to summer. It's always better to protect your hair in winter. Instead of treating your with chemicals, go for a better option; such as braiding. I tried a hair treatment from Schwarzkopf Professional Hair care range. It's called the Time Restore treatment. This treatment comprises of a shampoo, conditioner as well as the treatment. After going to the salon for 6 weeks, I discovered that my hair was much easier to manage. The strength and elasticity had improved. It was no longer breaking when I combed it and I could also treat it in the comfort of my own home. Now, if your hair is braided or in plaits the entire winter, you need to protect it right? From the itchiness and dry scalp. I discovered great products from Ladine. This product range is called Braids and Weaves. The sprays are AMAZING!!! At root spray, Hair Juice and Fresh & Lasting. These help protect your hair before, during and after plaiting. You can use thems at any time of the day. They also prevent hairline damage. If you do suffer from a receding hairline (which I think we all do), there are two great products that I believe may work very well for you. The first one is called Hair Renewal from Ladine. You apply it daily. Massage it onto the affected areas and watch it work wonders! The second one that I have tried (and practically use it every day) is called T444Z Hair Food. This one can be used once in every 3days. Try it, you won't regret it.

Natural vs Weaving Not sure whether to go the natural route or weave it up? See the hottest styles that celebrities get. Weigh your options and maybe even find a compromise between the two.

The Weave: Taraji P Henson Women are still crazy over this hairstyle, not only because of the glamorous look but also because of its easy maintenance. Taraji P. Henson rocks a short weave making it look like it's her natural hair.

The Natural Look: Lupita Nyong’o Lupita Nyongó has made it work with her short hair. When most celebrities weave their hair for red carpet events, she keeps it natural. The short natural hair trend is embraced by our very own Boity Thulo, Nandi Ngoma and Bonnie Henna to name a few. And they all look gorgeous.

The Compromise: Eva Marcille Women are still crazy over this hairstyle, not only because of the glamorous look but also because of its easy maintenance. Taraji P. Henson rocks a short weave making it look like it's her natural hair.

Lifestyle

Man-gasm! We asked a couple of questions that women want to know about men. We asked 9 burning questions, this is what they had to say.

Will sealing the cookie jar score me brownie points?

I earn more than him; does that make him feel inferior to me?

No it won't. Why seal the cookie jar. I would understand if it was probation for a certain period. So doing that will drop you points and sometimes chase him away.

Men naturally are engineered to provide, it's in them. Now, earnings are not the problem. What tends to be the problem is the attitude, understanding and communication break-down between you. Men are egocentric; so you reminding him all the time about your bank digits pushes him away from you. If your relationship is based on materialism and not on love, then you should start changing things. Remember, it's about you guys not your bank digits.

I'm so insecure about my body, is that a turn off for him? With this, it's all in your hands. If you are not confident and comfortable with your own body, he is likely to not see you as sexy. If lucky, he'll help you with that insecurity. Men love women who are confident about their body. The more confident you are, the more attracted he becomes.

Do you prefer girls with natural hair or a weave? It's all in preference. Our preferences as men are unique. Some prefer natural and some weave but mostly don't care much. But that doesn't make an exception for untidiness.

Why does boyfriend get pissed/ uncomfortable when I ask him about his ex? Guys don't like it when they are asked to dwell on the past relationships. It requires emotional attachment and that's what they try as much as they can to shun away from. Again, it's either the break-up was painful or it was a disaster.

Do men believe in “The One”? Yes they do. This is mostly influenced by something that women do unintentionally. This is something that you do unconsciously that ignites the spark in him to see you as the one.

He broke up with me, but keeps hitting me up, does he want me back? It depends on your break up. If your break up never had clear grounds, then he believes there's still a chance to fix things. But at the end of it all, it all boils down to you too. It depends on whether you want him back or not. If you still want him back, you will entertain his behaviour. If you don't, well it's obvious; just put your foot on the ground, period.

He is always asking me about my friend, who's hotter than I am, should I be concerned? Yes you should be worried. I mean, if you where to ask about my friend all the time, I would be worried.

I turned a man down, now his best friend is asking meout, is this part of a plan? If it is something they both agreed upon, yes it is part of a plan. We men respect each other. We can only do such if we discussed it first.

Love

Blow His Mind Ladies!!! You have the power to make him want you ever more. Here are 5 things you say that make him fall crazy in love with you.

1 2

“You're the best!” Telling your man that you appreciate him and that he is irreplaceable in your life will definitely score you serious points. Ladies, this of course, is accompanied by actions. Words alone cannot seal the deal.

“Those women are looking at you” Point it out with a cute frown on your face; this will sure put a smile on his face. How? Well, firstly because he is clearly looking good (men are just as vain). And secondly because your jealous. Men love it when we stroke their egos.

“I really think that you can succeed in...”

3 4

This will let him know that you pay attention in whatever that he is passionate about that you believe in him and you have his best interests at heart. Men love women who acknowledge and care about their dreams. Like us, they too need to fee the sensation of support. As much as they deny it; men are huge softies inside. The motivation will be heartfelt. It's a major confidence booster for your relationship

“You are my first!” Okay what are the chances, but letting him know that you experienced some things for the first time with him will emphasize his prowess in the bedroom. Men love it when a woman speaks her mind, especially when it concerns the relationship.

“I was thinking of... What do you think?”

5

Ladies, men do not like it when we make decisions for them and expect them to read our minds. We women, we tend to think that men think like us. Well they don't. Men do think ahead but not like us women. There are things and issues that need to be suggested first before executing. This makes them feel involved and taken into consideration too. Practice these five tips ladies and see your relationship transform. After all, a happy manmeans a healthy relationship. Good luck!

Brian Themba

Channing Tatum

Vuyo Dabula

Brain appears on our screen as Ranthumeng in Muvhango. He continues to showcase how multi talented he is; from singing and now acting. Ladies when you see this hot suspect, demand him to serenade you with that voice of his. Yummy, yummy, yummy!

Channing stars in the movie Magic Mike which is loosely inspired by his experience as an eighteen-year-old male stripper. Hmmm, naughty! This one is Hot from top to bottom.

Our very own “Gaddafi” on Generations the Legacy is absolutely HOT! He's the good reason to watch the soap opera, but don't think about stalking him ladies. Unfortunately Vuyo is taken, he's married ladies.

Jamie Dornan

Sithembiso Khoza

Vin Diesel

This Fifty Shades of Grey actor is seriously on flames. Not only because of his role as Christian in the steamy R rated movie, but also because he looks super dapper every time he hits the red carpets.

Sthembiso is better known as SK and he is on fire. The man is too hot for words. He has appeared on our screens from the times of “Goal Diggers” to the Show airing on Mzansi Magic, Ayeye. My man can leave me alone with him anytime.

The Fast and the Furious sequences are always different but Vin remains the same, sexy and hot. He doesn't seem to age, not even a single bit. We just have to find out what his anti-aging secret is. Women won't mind having a series of body massage sequels with this actor.

Shoes

The Shoe/Friendship Rack Yes! You also have personal relationships with your shoes, best respect them

The BFF (Best Friend Forever) Or as we call them here at Full Flair your 233 23hours/ 3 weeks a month friend, even though she gets time to herself (that's when you get time to yourself too)she's always got your back.

The Emergency Friend You know that time when you realise that you do not have a back up pair of shoes and the unthinkable happens. The heel or t strap of your sandal breaks; yes that's when you realise that you need an emergency friend.

That your ride or die pair, that will never let you down always ready for every occasion. The trusted shoe that won't make a sound when you sneak in at night or never break no matter the abuse it gets. “My Ganster love!”

Much like that time when you were stuck at the queue on a sale clearance day, and needed someone to desperately talk to or risk funky breath forming and you found yourself an emergency friend. You won't necessarily be seen taking shoe selfies with t her, but need her to get through the day.

The Fake Friend Remember the time when you were in grade 8, and had to befriend the cool girls in Matric just so that you could get some info on the hottest guy in school who happened to be your senior, and of course to make it seem as though you were mature and cool? Well same thing with your shoes, we all want to be cool and fit in with the people you follow on Intsagram, even though it means saving up for the fake “red bottoms” you saw downtown. Even though you know it's not the real deal, and probably won't last long, you go for it anyway “the ends justify the means”.

The Frenemy So a Frenemy is someone whom you are friendly toward regardless of the deep dislike and enmity. Just like putting up with that girl who stole your boyfriend in varsity, because she happens to boss's little sister. That kind of relationship is the same one you have with that gorgeous pair of shoes that you just can't wear because they're just too high to walk in. So you display the shoes for your friends to see and take awesome selfies in them (sitting down of course). You love them on the surface, but deep down you hate the thought of them.
