“One of the world’s largest and most prestigious documentary festivals.” - Bennett Allen, Variety
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is dedicated to growing the next generation of documentary filmmakers and fans through educational experiences. Our educational programs are comprised of five initiatives: Fellows Program – Designed to educate, motivate, and nurture university
students interested in the documentary form, the Fellows Program brings over 150 students from universities throughout the country to the festival for screenings, master classes with filmmakers, and conversation with peers.
Teach the Teachers – As part of this documentary literacy program for local
teachers, educational professionals attend the festival to watch and discuss films and learn to actively use documentaries in their classroom curriculum. Teachers then receive educational credit for completed work.
Lending Library – Through this library of documentary films housed within
Durham Public Schools, teachers can check out films, along with study guides and classroom activities created by peers who have participated in the Teach the Teachers program.
Youth Screening – This annual documentary screening is provided for local
middle and high school students. Screenings are followed by Q&A sessions with filmmakers and film subjects, and teachers are provided with study materials to use in the classroom before and after the screening.
School of Doc – This five-week, intensive, hands-on documentary filmmaking
camp is provided free for local high school students. Students learn all aspects of documentary filmmaking: camera, audio, lighting, sound, and editing, as well as interviewing skills and producing. The final films are presented to a packed theater at the end of the camp, then presented again at the following spring’s festival.
“Full Frame stands out for the way it really nurtures relationships between filmmakers. It has become a Mecca and it feels more and more like a family reunion each time I attend. As a Full Frame Jury Award winner, it also qualified me for Oscar® consideration and directly contributed to my being nominated for an Oscar® in 2015.” — J. Christian Jensen, director of Oscar® nominee White Earth “The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is as important of an asset to Durham as the Bulls, American Tobacco or the DPAC. Full Frame has helped make our city’s point on the map a little bigger and a little brighter for the countless visitors seeking an inspiring experience in a one of a kind community. We are proud to support the world class asset that is Full Frame.” — Michael Goodmon, Vice President of Real Estate Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc. “After my first, I vowed to never miss a Full Frame festival. I plan my year around it. Each year Full Frame lets me experience things I'd otherwise not know about, things that renew my spirit and open my mind to new ideas and possibilities.” — Victoria Wright, Full Frame donor
