LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Another month has come and gone and we are quickly approaching Christmas. I hope everyone knows what to buy their significant other this year. I always say it is so easy to buy for my wife, because she wants “EVERYTHING”. That makes it pretty easy to shop for her gifts. I love the holidays because of the fun we have getting together with all the family and watching the grandkids open their gifts. That’s what the holidays are all about to me. Family and spending quality time together. Speaking of gifts, along with our friends at Shady Jack’s Saloon, Full Throttle is hosting a food drive and a Toys for Tots collection on Saturday December 13. In conjunction with that, we will be having a HUGE Christmas Party also that day. We all know Shady Jack’s is the place to party, so mark your calendars for Saturday, December 13. The event will start at noon and run into the evening hours. We are asking all our readers and all of Shady Jack’s fans and customers to come by that day and bring a canned food item and a toy for those folks that are less fortunate than us. We will give you a raffle ticket for each item you donate and that evening we will draw tickets to give away gift cards from many of our advertiser to show our appreciation to you for your donation. So, you can ride in with your donation or drive in; either way, be sure to come by and have a great time at the Shady Jack’s and Full Throttle Christmas Party. December also marks an exciting month for us here at Full Throttle Magazine. It was one year ago this month that Cindy and I created the all new Full Throttle Magazine. This first year has flown by and has been far more successful than even the two of us thought it would be. Full Throttle Magazine is clearly the Magazine of Choice by all the readers and advertisers, and for that we thank you. We thank all those people who read Full Throttle and the advertisers that support our Magazine as we continue to grow and dominate this market. I would also like to thank our awesome staff that spends so much of their time helping us be the #1 Motorcycle Magazine everywhere. Remember, we are always open to your suggestions and comments. All of us at Full Throttle are looking forward to a HUGE 2015 with more events, more articles, more riding and more fun to share with all of you. Email your thoughts and suggestions to me at publisher@ fullthrottle-magazine.com. Ride safe and we will see you on the road with Full Throttle Magazine. Bob
Air Ride or Shocks? The new dilemma on baggers is whether to do air shocks or spring; or even a complete air ride system. We spent numerous hours with experts in the suspension industry to pick their brains about what set up was best. Here’s what we found. Look at the semi-trucks that cruise down the road every day. What are they riding on? More than likely it’s air. The air ride is better when hauling a heavy load. But, why run this on a motorcycle? For some, it’s simply to “show off”. You can get the bike low, and then raise it back up when you’re ready to ride. Not only does it look cool, this will give you an amazing ride. Figure 1. Shocks Raised
Figure 3. Shocks Raised
When running an air shock, whethFigure 4. Shocks Lowered er it’s a stock air shock or an air ride system, you have to find the midrange of the shock. Most people that call us or talk to their buddies ask them, “What air pressure do you run in your shocks?” The problem is that each person is different. People are different sizes and some people ride with a passenger. The more weight you add, including the items in the saddlebags, the more air you need in the shock. You need to be able to adjust any shock that you have. The more weight that you add, the closer you get to the bottom of the shock. When you remove the weight, you rise to the top of the shock. By having the air ride system with an on board compressor, it enables you to adjust the shock and obtain the ultimate ride. You can adjust the system while riding down the road with the flip of a switch. When riding with a stock Harley air shock, you need to sit on the bike, use a hand pump, and adjust the air in the shocks. Then go for a ride and adjust accordingly; same concept with an adjustable spring shock.
Figure 2. Shocks Lowered
Air ride systems have popped up everywhere nowadays. Most all of them utilize the same parts. Some may change little things. They can range anywhere from $400- to a couple thousand. Spring shocks can be anywhere from $200 on up. Obviously the easiest to install would be a spring shock, as there is a lot more involved in installing an air ride system. In an air ride system you have the compressor, the shocks, a dump valve, relay, a switch, possibly a gauge, and air lines. It takes about 2-3 hours to install a system on most baggers. So, whether you choose to take a ride on air or springs, call us at Jammer Joint. We can help you decide what works best for you. Check us out in Full Throttle Magazines January 2015 issue for the next part of this build.

‘Twas The Night Biker Chic’s Saved Christmas
‘Twas the night before Christmas; to all women and their bikes, Wearing leathers and chaps, getting ready for the night. Taking their bikes out for a crisp Christmas roll; Watching all the lights twinkling on the houses of old.
We put our heads together to see what we could do; Looking at our bikes I came up with a clue. “Santa, I have a nice Trike all ready to ride; You can put your gifts in the trunk and away you’ll fly.”
I went in to the house to get some cold water, And there I saw under the tree was all this leather. Jackets, chaps, gloves, vest and more; “I never expected all these things that I adore.”
“It has an engine built for speed to As you can see, helping others make up for lost time; through their time of need; Just hit it Full Throttle and into Proves to bless you by doing good the sky you’ll climb.” deeds. There is a specific bike that has awakened such vigorous emotion to both non-bikers and bikers, and has influenced more people to ride and start customizing their own builds. It is one of the most, if not the most, identifiable choppers in the world. This bike has been claimed to be a phony ol’ fraud at a $1.35 million auction recently on October 18th, 2014; even to its Easy Rider himself, Peter Fonda. That bike is CAPTAIN AMERICA. (To be further referenced as C.A.) In the 1969 movie Easy Rider, there were four nickel plated Harley Davidson Hydra Glide Panhead’s purchased from a police auction for the use of the movie production: One 1950; Two 1951’s; and One 1952. Two of the bikes were for filming; the other two were for the final sequence of the crash scene where the bike burns in flames after being shot. With designer Cliff Vaughs, builder Ben Hardy on the engine, Jim Buchanan on frame fabrication, and Dean Lanza on paint; this team of experts created an inconceivable machine that has been unmistaken to the public eye by recognition. So how can it be the wool was pulled over so many eyes? How did Peter not recognize his own bike??? So…let’s start with DAN HAGGERTY. He claims to be a mechanic for the movie bikes during the production and that Producer/Actor Peter Fonda just up n’ gave him the wrecked bike when it was all over. Eeeeeh…. WRONG! Fonda claims publically on October 22, 2014 on his Facebook page that is a lie! Haggerty wasn’t even on the set that day of the crash scene, NOR was he even in charge of handling any bikes on the set. The blown up remains of the C.A. bike, the second C.A. bike rode, and the two Billy bikes were loaded to a truck where off they went to the garage of Mr. Tex Hall; who actually WAS a mechanic on the set and the C.A. stuntman. Fonda confirms that

CAPTAIN AMERICAN
the other three bikes were stolen by a biker club. Stolen goods = not coming back. With that being said, we have one busted-up incomplete bike to work with here. Now we have the unknown of how exactly Haggerty came into possession of the bike remains to restore it. No one seems to have an answer to this conundrum. Anyways, so he never even finished the restoration and just sold the bike to John Parham in 2002; that just so happens to be the President of the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, IA, where the bike has been on display for 12 years. “It was never owned … just on loan,” Parham said in a statement. “The person who owned it sold it, and the new owner decided to auction it off.” Um… yeah. You’d be that owner too. Do you all see the scandal building here? Just wait. The plot thickens. Next we have GORDON GRANGER. This poor guy. Whew! I feel for him. Rewind to 1996. This Texan goes to an auction where $63,500 later he leaves with what he has been given principal authentication for at the time of sale by Haggerty to be non-other than; what? That’s right – The CAPTAIN AMERICA bike that survived the film and theft! The Certificate of Declaration states that the bike has been rebuilt with 90% of the original bike parts and “This Captain America motorcycle has been certified and guaranteed by the seller as the original motorcycle used in the crash sequence on the 1969 film ‘Easy Rider’ …” Haggerty even gives him an additional signed Certificate of Authenticity on the bike in 2002 (same year he sold the other bike to Parham) stating: “This motorcycle was used as a double of the ‘Captain America’ bike … and was the motorcycle ridden by stuntman Tex Hall in the crash sequence.” In 2010 he faces a brutal arson in the warehouse where this bike was stored. Well now the poop hits the

fan and is being flung like monkeys at the zoo, because people are comparing pics to the movie and finding alleged discrepancies. The tank is too small and the paint scheme is off – different blue & stars too big, handlebar risers are wrong style, throttle should be a single-cable – not a two-cable. Just ’a nitpickin’ this sucker apart. But Granger don’t care ---- HE’S GOT PAPERS ON IT. Now come back to 2014 where he finds out there’s another C.A. bike at auction claimed to be the original. Heated like a bucking bull with its balls tied for a rodeo, he is in full protest; because heeeeello… HE is the owner of the original C.A. So who is the new guy putting the other on the auction block attesting his to be the “original” bike?
NOW says the docs are FALSE, and “That was my mistake. It’s not the real bike ... The bike with me here [at Profiles in History] is the bike Tex Hall gave me.” Say whaaat??!! Well Fonda believes that Eisenberg’s is the real deal because he went as far as on August 28, 2003 providing his own letter stating: “Certificate of Authenticity I, Peter Fonda, 100% guarantee this to be the only, last, original, authentic ‘Captain America’ motorcycle from the 1969 movie ‘Easy Rider.’….. When filming was done, I gave the motorcycle to Dan Haggerty as a memento of his work on the film ‘Easy Rider.’….. No other authentic Captain America motorcycle exists……” He even went as far as signing the gas tank on Eisenberg’s bike. But NOW, 11 years later…OOPS, you were wrong?! You go on This brings us to MICHAEL EISENBERG. Facebook and say you never gave Haggerty the bike to Iroooonically…. This guy just so happens to begin with? And that the bike sold at auction is chrome plated frame and not nickel like the original? C’MON! be a former business associate of Fonda’s and Dennis Seriously??? Hopper’s (Easy Rider Director/Actor). They all were co-owners in the 1990’s of the Thunder Roadhouse Well, at least he retracted his authentication; biker bar in West Hollywood on the Sunset Strip. That after the auction that is. He even says he has no idea place burned to the ground too, as well as tons of mowhich bike, if either, is the one from the ending crash torcycle collectables. Bikes on fire seem to be a trend scene in the movie. revolving around these people. The movie ending, the The latest to date on the investigation is to the warehouse, the bar…. year of Eisenberg’s bike because it may be a 1953 Pan Eisenberg bought C.A. from Parham. Rememhead. Well we know that wasn’t one of the years Fonda ber him above? The President of the museum where bought to use for the movie. Why the hell wasn’t this the bike is located. That guy sells to Eisenberg, who initially looked into by the museum and auction house doesn’t even own the bike a full year when deciding to before selling? Tisk, tisk. Shady, shady. liquidate it through Profiles in History auction house in Eisenberg flew in the original designer, Cliff Calabasas, CA. Vaughs, for viewing, and he even states it’s a replica. Hum... seems suspicious to me. Especially knowAs of October 27th, the auction house confirmed the ing that he made Fonda an offer of 10% of the sales buyer of the lot (C.A. bike) hasn’t completed the sale, proceeds to help promote the auction. But, Fonda decli and Eisenberg’s bike was pulled. Fonda is requesting ned. both the Granger and Eisenberg/Parham bike frames be inspected side by side. Moving right along in our tale to, ‘THE AUCTION”. Haggerty comes out and confirms to signing Stayed tuned for a follow up on this in next the documents given to Granger on his C.A. bike, BUT month’s issue!

Full Throttle Saftey Asylum There is nothing like jumping on a motorcycle and disconnecting from the world as we ride the open road. The freedom we feel is like nothing else and it can take us to another world. Unfortunately, many electronic devices are now standard issue on motorcycles (freedom machines) and offered as aftermarket options. These devices are serious distractions, which inhibit a rider’s ability to search and evaluate hazards on the road and detract from the experience of a true ride. Someone convinced me that a bike with a radio, electronics, and a large passenger seat was a better choice. Therefore, I bought a geezer-glide a few years ago with all of the bells and whistles. A radio and windshield replaced the wind from an open handlebar and the harmonic roar created by a group of bikes. Adjusting electronics and worrying about the logistics of hauling a passenger around consumed a lot of time. These distractions caused me to miss a good percentage of the scenery provided by our magnificent countryside. I sold the bagger and bought another bike. A friend asked why I stepped down to a Springer. Sorry, but I feel my decision was a step UP. Besides, windshields block the bugs, which are an excellent source of nutrition. Commonly found on many of the new, top of the line motorcycle models are GPS, USB ports, and a sound system coupled with 6.5-inch color LCD monitor. A rider can easily take/post pics on Facebook, text, call the office, adjust the GPS, and tune-in the sound system while the bike drifts off of its intended path. It is humorous that the manufacturers charge big $$$ for these added conveniences. Thank you, Sir! MAY I HAVE ANOTHER? We should not let a text message or a Facebook notification pressure us into looking at or using a cell phone while riding. This type of distraction can lead to a disaster. My idea of riding is to escape the electronic leash. Set the auto reply and check the phone at the next stop if needed. What would life be like without a cell phone? Sounds like freedom to me! We pay too much for cell phones anyway. On board communication, devices are also available so we can hear our passengers state the obvi-

ous, remind us of assigned tasks, and generally discuss things we probably do not want to hear or talk about while riding. This device can easily distract a motorcyclist from the job at hand. Some riders may purposely crash to end the torture. Riding is a pleasure and there is nothing better than a loud concert. However, the two should not be synonymous. Several motorcycle enthusiasts enjoy a rolling decibel contest and feel that it is their job to provide music for everyone within a two-mile radius. Wise biker’s use their hearing, in addition to sight, to quickly identify and avoid potential hazards on the road. The interference of a blaring sound system greatly inhibits this ability, which leaves the rider and nearby victims exposed to hazards. By the way, Doc’s Harley Davidson’s ride to the Black Sabbath concert a few years ago was awesome! It can be difficult to know when to park the bike at the end of a long day, especially when we are having fun. However, the biggest distractions crop up when we have pushed ourselves too far and too long. Fatigue can affect a person’s ability to react properly. In fact, the impairment caused by drowsiness can be just as deadly as alcohol intoxication. Know when it is time to “call it a day” and stick to the plan. Caught up in a world of their own distractions (texting), we all know most cagers have trouble seeing bikes. Naturally, this can induce anger on our part, but it is crucial to see the anger as nothing more than another diversion. Bad drivers are out there, and they are going to make us angry. We cannot let them interfere. Take the high road and set a great example, as someone who operates a powerful machine free from disturbance. Our culture is addicted to multi-tasking. People are always trying to do two or three things at once or take shortcuts. The ride from one place to another has become more of an inconvenience than a pleasure to many riders. Use the rebellious side of our nature to disconnect from the collective (Big Brother does not like that) and embrace the true intent of riding. Keep concentration where it belongs and just enjoy the ride.

makes this head light set up for almost every model in the lineup. It is a protector style LED designed to focus a powerful concentrated beam down the road as well as “curb-to-curb” coverage. These head lamps are much like the ones you find on BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and other high end luxury cars with safety in mind. The Day Maker from Harley-Davidson cast more than 25 feet of light to both sides and penetrates 150 feet further down the road than the standard head lamp; that’s huge!!! Not only do you get better coverage you also get a brighter burn on the light itself. I’m gonna get a little scientific on you for a second here so try

The best way to describe this is that a 5500 Kelvin burn is damn near the purest whitest light you can get and is compared to light received on a clear day at high noon! Not only will this lamp help you see better down the road it will also help you be seen ON the road! It’s pretty intense! Needless to say, I now have a Harley-Davidson Day Maker on my bike! All this product does is boost the amperage to the turn signals to indicate there is in fact a bulb at the turn signal / brake light terminal; as most bikes are fitted with a safety feature to indicate when a bulb is out. As I said before these LED’s pull almost no power at all. In fact so little, the safety feature trips and acts as if there is a bulb out. In this case the blinker may stay on or blink very fast depending on the year, make and model. Now with all the safety mumbo jumbo out of the way let’s talk styling! LED’s have been Emitting Diode. my customers have asked me, “What’s the law about running your LED setup while cursing down the road?” I spoke to an officer buddy of mine and first off he stated under no circumstances should you ever run RED, BLUE, or GREEN lights while in transit as these are all emergency colors only! I have customers that will run white lights as they believe it draws the needed attention to them to be seen and not just in the “hey check out my ride” way but a “why yes, I was in that lane you just pulled into!” attention. So whether you are looking to do some more traveling at night, wanting your brake lights and turn signals to be seen day or night, or you just want a bike that rivals the beautiful aurora borealis; we can help here at St Charles Harley Davidson!! Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the ride!!

vehicles sitting lem -- he doesn’t like blue. Well, I around. He called like a challenge and was ready to my customer and make this truck turn heads. So I said come get it or we will crush it. This is a story of a TRUE Farm truck, a retired Farm Truck but still a farm truck. A customer of mine told me the story of how his father became the owner of this ’59 Ford F-100. It was one of those old horse trader stories where his Dad employed some workers and one of the workers needed some money, so he took this truck as part of the collateral. He needed a truck to hall his hay and feed from town. On many of those trips the rear bumper dragged the ground on its way back home. So much so, one day the rear bumper was pulled off in transit. The truck worked hard for many years until one day it just got tired and died. So what do farmers do with dead vehicles? They park them in a field and let them rest (or should I say rust). This ’59 is no different than most of them, but one day some 20 years later his Dad decided it was time to do something with all of the dead
He had the ’59 brought to my shop “Showcar Specialist”. It was so ugly; it was cool! Steve and I talked for some time as he showed me over 100 photos he printed off of the internet of ideas we had for this restoration project. He asked if I could duplicate the truck he was showing me. I said “Sure, No Problem.” No Problem until he asked for an estimate. I had to scrap his jaw off the floor when I indicated it would be about a $Million$. After that, I suggested that we build something mind-blowing instead of high dollar. I then suggested that we build a really custom and fast chassis with the best of everything. “Let’s give it a crazy amount of power and handling, and put the original body right back on it.” This option will lower the cost as well as the time frame. At first he wasn’t too sure of it, but I convinced him how much fun it would be. He was all in, but there was only one prob-

took a lot of photos of the TRUE PATINA that the ’59 had on it. I knew I would need some help with this build so I called a good friend of mine to help, Jeff Burke of JB Customs. We have done many projects together and I knew we could make this really extraordinary. I mentioned this truck had been sitting in a field for a while. Time not only begets rust, it also brought MICE; as in loads of mice and their crap. I’m talking about so much crap that this cab had, I didn’t even want to bring it in the shop. We suited up and stripped the interior outside so we wouldn’t bring any of the furry pests or disease into the shop. I honestly had never seen so many mice and as much crap in

my life; it was terrible. Now I know where the field rodents like to make their “rat’z nests”. After we had it safe and clean enough to bring inside we
wanted to get this one done pretty quick, so I called another good friend, Jim (Dito) Tovo, to help us. We stripped it down to nothing and shipped the body to Mark Lynn Fabricating. He built us a Killer chassis that was bullet proof. The chassis was so remarkable; we almost didn’t want to put the body
back on it just because we didn’t want to take away from the look of this masterpiece. We had a fuel injected 460 cu.in. engine built for us at AMT Performance and bolted it up to a Kiesler Engineering 5 speed transmission, that sends the power to a 9” rear
end with 35 splined Detroit Locker with 3.55:1 gears. With all of the power this engine puts out, thanks to Chip & Jeff at Competition Marine, you need to get it to the streets somehow. And we did it with a set of 33-18X20 Mickey Thompson Flamed tires on one-off Dayton Wire wheels. Once these huge rollers start moving, there needs to be a way to get them to stop. We knew Wilwood 6 piston calipers on the front and 4 piston calipers on the rear applied by the high pressure Wilwood master cylinder would work. Everything on this truck works, and works well, including the Vintage Air A/C & Heater. I didn’t really care for the amount of wheel opening on the front fenders, so I cut up the fenders and moved the wheel arch forward 4”. You would think the tires couldn’t turn with the new openings but they do just fine, and really easy with the power Rack & Pinion. It was always fun showing off this F-100 due to its looks. Tons of people would talk to us and compliment on so many radical things about it. Then they would ask, “What color are you going to paint it?” I’d tell those, thanks for the compliment and that I had painted it to look this way. I had my wife, Linda Ray, take some Comet and a Scotch pad to the 3 coats of
clear I had applied to add to the
Patina. We wanted the Patina; not a shiny paint job. She had to do this process two more times because the clear coat was so good, by the time she finished the first go around, the shine came back on its own! The owner of the truck is a member of the Shelby Club here in St. Louis that had a Dyno Day at STL Tuners with Omer Phelps. It is pretty cool when you have something like this and you hear some of the Cobra owners say, “Why does this guy have this piece of crap here?” When Omer called the ’59 to the Dyno, and the Cobra guys heard this Bad Boy fire up, they changed their tune very quickly; especially when they saw the numbers. We’ll just say it was over 500 HP at the rear wheels. How many Cobras can say that? So basically, I guess what I am saying is -- Don’t judge one of my ugly paint jobs until you hear it FULL THROTTLE. You may want to get out of the way.
