DOC’S ROCKS CUSTOM BIKE BUILD

Here at Doc’s Harley-Davidson we decided it was time to spice things

up with one of our 2018 Street Glide Specials. What better time to do so than to do it during our live bike build? We threw on a NATIVE 180mm Pitbull Front Tire Kit, some awesome looking ten-inch Twin Peak Handle bars from L.A. Choppers, and yes, of course they’re black! We also installed a Harley-Davidson Daymaker, and last but not least, something we’re all excited about, a Stage I Upgrade with a FULL exhaust system! Who did we have install all of these goodies on this sick looking Street Glide Special? None other than our head Master Technician Mike Trankler.

Mike is 39 years old and has worked in the industry for over seven years now, with all seven of those years at Doc’s HarleyDavidson. He has been a technician since 2012. Mike started his journey to becoming a Harley-Davidson Technician at Fort Scott University, where he graduated from in 2012 and hit the ground running. He also grew up around motorcycles and has been riding them since the age of five so one could say it was inw his blood to become a Technician. Currently, Mike owns a 2008 Road King. He has owned four Harley-Davidson’s in total, including two Sportsters and a Dyna Wide Glide.

Mike said that being a Harley-Davidson Master Technician is a fun job. “It was everything I had expected and more.” One of his favorite things about being a Master Technician is all of the cool places that he has been sent to because of his job. Every year here at Doc’s Harley-Davidson we send our techs off to school, so they are prepared to work on the newest technology that Harley-Davidson has to offer, as well as assuring that your bike is in the best hands possible.

Mike’s favorite place that he has traveled for work is Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has really enjoyed going to school there as well as going to the Harley-Davidson Museum. The realization that he is a part of 115 years of Harley-Davidson History is something that he takes pride in.

Over the years Mike has worked on countless HarleyDavidson’s. One in particular stuck out to him and has made an impact on his life. Mike was able to help build a trike for a Marine who was unfortunately paralyzed from the waist down. He was excited about all of the cool things he was able to put on the trike, but the biggest part of that build for him was being able to help give that CONTINUE ON PAGE 5

I’d like to say hoorah.. We are past the December and January hump and spring is just that much closer. The last few weeks have been far too cold for my blood and I’m sure you guys all feel the same.

The bitter cold has pretty much put a halt to any ideas I had for taking the bike out. With the first day of Spring less than 2 months away I’m counting the days.

The STL Motorcycle show just finished wrapping up and there was about a 16% increase in traffic over last year. The show had a number of new vendors and some of old favorites too. We are always excited to participate in this show because it brings the St Louis biking community together at a time of year that we aren’t doing much riding and getting together. I saw lots of our friends and created a number of new friends that I hope to see on the road this year. I personally want to thank Joe & Michelle Rusch for all the time and efforts they put into making the STL Motorcycle show a fun and entertaining event each year.

As we move closer to the spring season we are working with our friends at Bobby’s Place in Valley Park to make this year’s Wednesday evening Bike Nights Bigger, Better and full of fun things to participate in each week. We would love to hear any thoughts you have on making “Historic Route 66 Bike Night” a better event and more fun. Please send me an email if you would like to make any suggestions. After all, this night is put together for all you, the riders. So let me know your thoughts.

We have had many calls and emails concerning the GGG Bike/Car Show event that we have held each year and the fact that there was no GGG in 2017. We are looking at locations and dates to hold the Biggest and Best GGG that has ever been put together. We will keep everyone posted in the coming weeks to our plans about the GGG event. As always it will be an event to raise money for a needed organization.

Can The Millennials Save T As aging riders hang up their leathers, Harley-Davidson and Honda pin their hopes on smaller, affordable bikes for a new generation.

For Fed Pacheco, it was a long journey from motocurious to motorcyclist.

There was a ride years ago in Texas on his uncle’s Suzuki Boulevard, not long after Pacheco had emigrated from Venezuela. A few years later, he decided to take a riding course and got his motorcycle license, though he still didn’t pull the trigger. But when Honda unveiled its new Rebel 500 in November, the 27-year-old finally went all in.

“I just started obsessing about it, to be honest,” he said. “The riding season was coming up and I thought ‘You know what? Maybe, it’s not that crazy.’” Pacheco traced one of the first Rebels on the market to a dealership in New Jersey, walked in and paid $6,800 on the spot. The bike was still in its shipping box.

Honda’s Rebel is the latest entry in a parade of new bikes designed for first-time riders; almost every company in the motorcycle industry has scrambled to make one. They are smaller, lighter, and more affordable than most everything else at a dealership and probably wouldn’t look out of place in the 1960s—back when motorcycling was about the ride, not necessarily the bike. They are also bait for millennials, meant to lure them into the easy-rider lifestyle. If all goes as planned, these little rigs will help companies like Harley-Davidson coast for another 50 years.

“They’re new motorcycles, but they’re also new thinking,” said Mark Hoyer, editor-in-chief of Cycle World magazine. “They’re selling this perception of lifestyle ... it’s a cultural movement; a rebranding of the whole motorcycle industry.”

It’s also the manufacturing equivalent of a mid-life crisis.

Motorcycle sales in the U.S. peaked in 2006 at 716,268 and promptly started to skid. When the recession hit, the market went down hard. Bike sales fell by 41 percent in 2009 and another 14 percent the following year, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. That’s not surprising considering the economy at the time: A motorcycle is a picture of discretionary spending, and they can be tricky to finance even in a healthy credit market. Even now, with the stock market on a historic bull run and after the U.S. auto industry posted its best year on record, traffic in motorcycle stores has stayed slow. In 2016, U.S. customers rolled off with 371,403 new bikes, roughly half as many as a decade ago.

And then there’s the generational time-bomb. In 2003, only about one-quarter of U.S. motorcycle riders were 50 or older. By 2014, it was close to half. The market has been cruising on a demographic that may only be able to buy one more bike.

Suddenly, bike-makers desperately need new riders and millennials, apparently, are the best hope. Not only are there more of them than GenXers, but they have a longer expected lifetime value, which is corporate way of saying they’re a further away from needing a hip replacement.

Around 2010, bikemakers made a major strategic shift: Sturgis was out; Coachella was in. They needed something cool to show on the wealthy, quasi-hipster music scene, something far from the fatfendered, chrome-soaked hogs buzzing around South Dakota.

“Everybody is trying to do the same thing,” said Lee Edmunds, manager of Honda’s motorcycle marketing. “They’re all realizing they need to have more people www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

come in at an entry-level stage.”

Harley-Davidson led the charge, perhaps because it dominates the U.S. market for large motorcycles and has the most to lose. Between 2006 and 2010, the number of big-engined Harleys registered in the U.S. plummeted by almost half. The company has hosted riding academies for first-timers since 2000, but it quickly ordered its engineers to design a true starter bike.

Unveiled in 2013, the Street 500 resembles a conventional Harley in the way an Ivy League quarterback resembles an NFL lineman. The engine, just shy of 500cc, won’t turn any heads in Daytona Beach or wake anyone up in suburbia. The seat sits relatively low to the ground and the whole package can be had for just under $7,000. The Street 500 quickly became the standard kit in Harley’s riding schools, which churn out 65,000 new riders a year.

“There was a requirement to be more relevant to urban environments,” said Anoop Prakash, the company’s director of U.S. marketing. “Prior to the Street, we certainly believed and knew many riders would start in another brand.”

At about the same time, Kawasaki launched its Ninja 300, a subdued version of its famous sport bike. It has the same angry wasp styling, albeit with a much smaller powerplant and pricetag—$5,000; anti-lock brakes could be had for $300 more.

In 2014, Ducati joined the first-timer fray with its Scrambler, resurrecting a sub-brand that it last made in 1974. The contemporary version is essentially an 803cc engine wrapped in six different trims, from a no-frills “Classic” to a stripped down café racer. The engineering lends itself to tinkering and Ducati encourages buyers to customize their Scramblers with add-on elements.

“We call it a naked bike,” said Jason Chinnock, chief executive of Ducati North America. “It Page 16

was trying to bring something to market that had a nod to the nostalgia, but also the simpler way motorcycling was approached in the 1970s.”

About a year later, BMW pulled the cover off its G 310 R, a tidy, 350-pound version of its famous touring bikes. Anti-lock brakes are standard, and with a sticker price of $4,750, it’s less expensive than adding “smoke white” merino leather to one of BMW’s 7-series sedans.

Finally, Honda rolled out the Rebel that Pacheco fell so hard for. Pacheco is cofounder of a Manhattan marketing shop called Hungry Studio—it’s his job to know what a brand represents and what a product projects. In the end, the Honda felt more right to him than the HarleyDavidson that he learned to ride on. “It didn’t feel cheesy to me at all; it felt tasteful,” he explained. “And I could definitely tell they were advertising to people like me.”

Make no mistake, the economics on these bikes isn’t great. Profit margins are far fatter on something like a Honda Gold Wing F6B, an 844-pound locomotive that starts at $20,500. But that swollen kit doesn’t hold much street cred where Pacheco parks in Manhattan, in part because the folks buying those big cruisers are quickly transitioning from the roadhouse to the golf course.

The problem, however, with this sudden industry pivot to younger customers is that it may be coming too late. For years, it was too easy to just keep building bigger, more powerful bikes.

“They got more complicated, more expensive and more intimidating,” said Edmunds at Honda.

“For a long time, all the manufacturers could do that, because that baby boomer market was so huge.”

Chinnock, at Ducati, calls it “the horsepower game.”

The new breed of small bikes, meanwhile, has quickly become the most promising part of the business. Between 2011 and 2016, sales of motorcycles with engines smaller than 600cc increased by 11.8 percent, while bigger, more powerful bikes managed only a 7.4 percent gain.

In its first full year its Scrambler was on the market, Ducati sold 15,000 of them—28 percent of its total business. “These riders were not looking at Scrambler as an entry to the world of Ducati; they looked at it as a whole new thing,” Chinnock said. “It’s kind of one of those business mistakes you’re OK with.”

Harley-Davidson, meanwhile, has a new marketing tagline: Nine bikes for under $12,000.

ow’s it going Full Throttle readers, Zach White here to give you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. The winter has been a cold one and not as nice to us motorcycle riders as it has in the past few years. Hope you all have a fuel stabilizer or some fitch fuel catalyst in your tank and the battery on a tender so when the warmer weather appears and the salt is off the roads you can enjoy your bike. The seminar season is in full swing with three more remaining before the riding season is here. Hope all who made it to the STL Motorcycle Show enjoyed it and looking forward to next year. This months bike I want to talk about was one we had on display at the bike show so you might of seen it up close and got your hands on it.

This is a 2018 Bonneville Salt Denim Street Glide Special.

I was never a real big fan of a white bike until this color came out and now that the Street Glide Specials come completely blacked out, that might just have a little to do with it. The color combination looks so great from front to back even before we put our St. Charles Harley-Davidson touch to it. With this great color combination and stretched bags already from the factory you might think there isn’t much you need or would want to do but then again you don’t want to ride around and pull up next to another bike and think dang that looks the same as mine. So with that being said here is a few of the modification we did to make this one “your bike” and different from the other one next to you.

Lets start with the front end of this motorcycle. This bike is rolling on a 23” Performance Machine Platinum Contrast Paramount wheel with matching 13” single side rotor. I just love this look, not to big but big enough to get some heads turning and still be able to hit a corner as hard as you would like. With going with a single side rotor we wanted to make sure we had plenty of front braking power so we installed the HHI 6 piston caliper to make a perfect match for the 13” rotor. To make sure this bike sticks to the pavement and rides smooth its has matching front and rear Metzeler 888 marathon tires. Wrapped around the front wheel and tire is the Yaffe Thicky fender.

Moving up the front end you will notice the fork legs and upper covers have been changed. Since we went with the single sided rotor we didn’t want to have a caliper mount on the right side standing out with no caliper attached. So we went with the very clean hidden axle

set up from Arlen Ness. The design I decided on was the black 10-Gauge contrast upper boots and lower “Hot Legs”. They really set off this bike and fit well with the contrast wheel and fins on the motor.

As we continue up the front of the bike you will see different handlebars and grips. I love the natural feel that the 12” LA Chopper Twin Peak bars give you and the ability to install them without changing the cables made it a no brainier for the bar choice. The grips we went with are the Defiance, a newer design Harley came out with and are all around a great look and feel. The last big change to the bike and a must for most Harley fans is a little rumble to go with the twist of the throttle. For this build we decided on the 4.5” Rinehart Racing slip-ons that give it a real deep sound and enough attention to let others know you are near.

After many years of dodging winter weather it looks like the STL is finally getting a dose of the devils dandruff, that lovely four letter word no one likes..snow! We have seen some nice days here and there that have allowed us to get out and log some miles. As we all know it could be 68 degrees at 10am then dip down to the teens with snow in a matter of hours. Once the temps start to hit tolerable levels we are quick to get prepared with the proper clothing, thicker gloves to keep the wind out, heated gear to keep us warm, a full face helmet vs our normal open lid for added protection. Through all this preparation many overlook the simple prep of the motorcycle itself. Yes we should all “T-CLOCK” before we ride but let’s take this one step further. Sure all the lights work and the horn makes noise and hell, the PSI on your tires might be spot on! But there are a few extra steps we can take to protect ourselves and our prize possessions! Never forget our tires are the first line of defense between us and the road!

Just like the Budweiser you may have enjoyed over the weekend has a born on date, so do your tires! This is just as important for your tires as it is for your beer! No one wants a skunky tire or beer in their life. Why is this “born on dating” so important? Well tires can expire just like a beer sitting on a shelf. The materials and composites break down over time due to UV damage, weather conditions and over all wear and tear. The tire begins to harden as dry rot sets in and the tire starts to loose traction at its critical points including the center line as well as lean angle contact patches. Some slight moisture or oil slick will send these tires into bad situations.

How do I read a born on date? Simple! Look at the side wall and you will find a four digit number that will look like this “0116”. To the untrained eye it doesn’t seem like much. But this number is very important. The first two numbers “01” represent the week of the year it was produced. The “16” is the year produced, so this tire would have been “born” in the first week of January in 2016. This is a fresh non skunky tire! This number will help you keep fresh Page 28

tires on your bike and please don’t feel like you have to wear a tire tread out for it to expire. Most tire companies recommend a tire change within 4-6 years of install even if the tread is still good.

This brings me to my next point on tires. In this day and age everyone’s looking for the best deal and I get that. But understand if you’re buying a high mileage tire to simply avoid additional tire changes you are not using that tire properly. A high mileage tire should do just that! Run for miles and miles, but in an allotted time. If you are the type of rider that runs ten thousand miles or more in a year this tire is for you. If you are logging less than twenty five hundred miles a year this type of tire will last you forever! And that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Sure you are avoiding added costs of product and labor but that tire tread is going to exceed the life of the tire itself.

DORIS-”THE TALE OF TWO AUTO’S Everyone has heard of the great novel by Charles Dickens “A Tale Of Two Cities“; and I’m sure many of you had to write a report about it. For Me, unless it had an engine in it, I could have cared less. Now, if it was called “The Tale Of Two Auto’s”, The Nun’s would not have to slap the back of my hand for me to pay attention.

You see, for this story was set in a small suburb just outside of St. Louis known as Classic Car Studio. This city had what every Oil Blooded boy or girl could ever want. They had their design team, fabricators, upholstery shop, paint shop and a great mechanic team; what ever it took to build a great car. The main character of the story was Doris, the slow 1962 Chrysler 300.

Doris in “TheTale Of Two Auto’s” was not necessarily a slow car, if you opted for the bigger engine. It could certainly travel around town or across the country with style and lots of room for comfort. In its day, it was considered by Chrysler as a luxurious “Muscle Car” with all of the performance of Dodge and the Plymouths in that same era. It also had all of the luxury features expected with the Chrysler name.

With a great car like this 300, don’t expect it to be just sitting around growing old. If you are ever just cruising in the passing lane and you look in your mirror and you see an old patina 300 catching up with you, you better get the HELL out of its way.

Because you are about to get Sucked in to a VIPER!!!! Yes, I said a VIPER! Doris just had a upgrade. GENERATION 2.0; well 8.0 Liter V10 as a matter of fact. The Plot Thickens Scene change; enters the Second Tale. Tale number two comes about when the owner of nine years, Brian Schnuck, decided to do some improvements to an already cool car. Brian knew the right place to take the car for these needed updates. That would be Classic Car Studios. Brian, Noah Alexander and his team sat

down to come up with the plan for the build. The car already had the natural beauty with the paint and body, so that was all left alone. To save the patina look, a little BASF Glasurit satin clear was used.

With this build, Scott France and Randy Thomas did most of the work. but with all builds you need many hands. When the biggest change of your build is putting a 450 horse V-10 between the fenders, you don’t go on the internet and order a frame; you build one. And who would you possibly call for a set of V-10 headers to fit a ’62 Chrysler 300? So Classic Car Studio had to build them along with the stainless exhaust using Magnaflow mufflers to add a little tone. This one also holds the T-56 6 speed transmission sending the power through a Centerforce Clutch to a 9” FORD rear end built by John’s Industries with 4.11 gears.

With the power rack & pinion and RideTech Air suspension with the four link set up, it brings the ride quality way up. But what is a good ride if you don’t have the rubber to match it, CCS did the Mini Tub to fit the US Mags “Santa Cruz” with the Pirelli P-Zero tires. Front-245/35ZR20 Rear-335/25ZR22.

If you are going to drive a Classic car, you have to improve the breaking; Wilwood is a great choice. The guys wanted the engine bay and the interior to fit together so they made custom metal panels under the hood, floor mats, seat backs and the center console that flows all the way to the rear shelf.

To add more class and a nice smell, the dash and the Pro-Car seats by Scat were covered in leather. The gauges are original but still communicate with all of the modern technology.

For me just the pure sounds of Doris speaking out to me would be enough on most days but for other times I would need to blast the Kicker Audio sound system to it’s limits.

When asking Brian his favorite part of the car, two things popped up. The dashboard and the headlights and that is a tough question I know considering the great job Scott and Randall and the team at Classic Car Studio did on this car.

Like all other builds, they are truly never done. Doris has future plans which include MORE power and air conditioning.
