Missing The Road We all know too well the down time we have in the winter as motorcycle riders; especially in St. Louis and the surrounding areas. One day it could be 45 to 60 degrees, the next it could be snowing and freezing rain. We must always be prepared to take advantage of those winters days that allow us to hop on our Harley’s and put our worries behind us.

The most important part is making sure you are ready. The proper gear can make a big difference, and in the end be the difference between life and death. It is a reality that we must all come to terms with, anything can happen. Some gear that you are going to need in the winter might include: a full-face helmet, some leather chaps, a leather jacket and base layers, as well as gloves and boots. Harley-Davidson also offers jackets and gloves in heated options as well which can keep you warm throughout your whole ride. The kind of helmet you choose of course is all about personal preference for style or comfort. Some people like the freedom of having half-helmets. When you’re riding in freezing temperatures you need to be properly geared for your own safety and a full-face helmet is going to offer you the most advantages in cold weather. It will help keep your face warm, and of course block the majority of the wind. There are also modular helmets, which are basically full-face helmets that allow you to flip open the front face of the helmet. When riding, our legs are constantly exposed to the elements. Riding with cold legs is never fun, especially when it’s so cold your legs go numb and you just have to hope that your feet are on the ground when you come up to a stop light. To combat ever being in this situation wearing layers and chaps are going to be your best bet. Block the wind with CONTINUE ON PAGE 5

There are many events and rides already starting to get organized for this year and we are certainly excited to be part of them. Full Throttle and Bobby’s Place in Valley Park are working on the Wednesday Night “Historic Route 66 Bike Night”. We are planning on having more fun things to do and looking forward to seeing everyone there starting April 3rd for the opening night of our Bike Nights for 2019. Big St Charles Motorsports and Harley Davidson will be kicking off their Calendar girl search and their Bike Nights this on Thursday April 4th and that’s a Bike Night you don’t want to miss either. As always, there will lots going on every month at their Bike Night. Food, drinks, special shows and of course the Calendar Girl Search. So clear your calendars and be there every month or be the only one that stayed home.

Heartbreaker

S T A F F

Well we all have to admit 2019 has come in with a roar. Lots of snow on the ground as I’m writing this and more expected. I don’t know about the rest of you but I am not a fan of snow for more than about an hour. I’m not a skier and I prefer riding versus anything to do with snow. I hope the New Year is treating everyone well and that you’re working hard on your New Year’s resolution. One of my resolutions every year is to ride more and see more, so I’m looking forward again this year to trying and make that happen.

Full Throttle Magazine I always like to remind everyone that the 2019 Lake of 3904 Old Hwy 94 Ste 300 St. Charles,MO 63304 the Ozark Bikefest will be September 11th through September 636-244-1915 15th. Most of the Hotels/Motels have blocked a certain

number of rooms with special rates for the bikers. It’s our

Robert Blanton, Owner/Publisher understanding some of these rooms are already sold out. So I’m Publisher@fullthrottle-magazine.com Cindy Blanton, Editor Editor@fullthrottle-magazine.com Customer Service Manager Andrew Blanton Andrew@fullthrottle-magazine.com Contributing Writers Zach White, Brendan Talley, Andrew Blanton, Roger Ferris, Sales Staff Robert Blanton, Andrew Blanton

urging you to make your reservations early so you can get the special rate that are being offered by many of the hotels before these rooms are all sold out. This year’s Bikefest will continue to be bigger and better. It’s always a fun filled event with many scenic rides through the Ozarks and many restaurants and bars that have opened their doors to us, the biking community, to have a great time during the event. Full Throttle Magazine is certainly proud, once again, to be the exclusive Motorcycle Magazine Sponsor of Bikefest and Full Throttle will host and run the Passport Motorcycle Ride and Motorcycle Giveaway. We look forward to seeing all of you again this year at the 2019 Lake of the Ozark Bikefest.

a good set of chaps on top, while staying warm with some layers underneath. Some of the most important parts of your body to keep warm are definitely your hands. After all, you’re controlling the motorcycle with them. Harley-Davidson offers you a wide range of gloves to choose from. Whether you want to wear a full gauntlet style or a glove that cuts off at the wrist, we have options for you here at Doc’s Harley-Davidson. Many of the gloves we offer are waterproof as well, which can be a huge advantage in all kinds of weather, but especially cold weather. Making sure your ride is ready is the second step. Most of our bikes are winterized at the moment, and if they’re not being ridden, they need to be. Of course, if you have any questions about winterizing your bike, our service department is always here to answer your questions. Make sure you have a battery tender hooked up to your bike. Do NOT start your bike unless you’re going to ride it. On Twin Cam Models your charging system isn’t going to charge your bike unless you’re actually riding it anyway, so you’re not doing any good to your bike by starting it and not riding it; you might even be harming your bike. You’re not getting the motorcycle up to running temperature to burn off the moisture built up in your engine. You should be riding the bike for about 30 minutes. Make sure you’re also putting a fuel stabilizer in your bike as well when it sits for long periods of time. When you put fuel in, remember that bad gasoline can wreak havoc on your bike. Your tire pressure is going to change in this cold weather, so it is very important to check your tires every time before going on a ride. Not only will this improve your safety, it will also help extend the life of your tires. We know it can be hard to get that bike out for the winter, but we would love to see you ride on up to Doc’s any day of the week! www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

LIVEWIR

How’s it going Full Throttle readers, Zach White here to give you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. Hope everyone is making it this winter as mother nature has unfortunately brought some snow and cold temperatures our way. From the beginning of January with a 60 degree weekend to the 12” of snow one weekend and it continued as the month came to an end. Can’t wait for the warmer weather to be here and some nice rain showers to rinse off all the salt that has been put on the roads. Hope you all have your bike plugged into a battery tender and some sort of fuel additive in the tank so when we do get those nice days again your ready. This month I want to talk about the New Harley-Davidson LiveWire. It all started back in 2014 when Harley made the first announcement about the LiveWire, the first all electric motorcycle from Harley-Davidson. I was very excited from day one and the first time I put a leg over the Prototype I was impressed on how good and natural it felt. Unfortunately I didn’t get to ride it but was able to see one of Harley’s employees take it for a spin and fly past me standing on the side of the road. It was so stealth and almost the sound of your fishing reel when that big fish just grabbed a hold of your lure when you wasn’t paying attention. It was about 100 ft away when it started and you heard it getting “louder” as it approached very quick then the sound was gone as it past. I couldn’t wait to get on one and really feel the instant torque. Then this past August Harley made another announcement at the Annual Harley-Davidson Dealer Show. These bikes would be out hitting the streets in 2019, so we signed up and said we are “All In”. Harley had a big response from dealers and was going to announce which dealers got in the first phase to become a LiveWire Dealer. We got our call in January that it was all “Green” lights for us to bring in the newest family of Harley-Davidson. We are excited to be an official Authorized LiveWire Dealer. Now it’s time to get our Dealership equipped with the DC Fast Charging Stations and all our staff up to speed on what to expect when the first one comes rolling in off the truck in August of this year. Harley has put out a few specs for us and I will touch on the ones that really stood out to me. With no clutch or gear shifting and the instant Torque as you twist the throttle you will go from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Which might not seem that quick when you first think about it but say “St. Charles HarleyDavidson” two times and that’s how quick it is to get to 60. With cornering enhanced Anti-Lock brakes and traction control you will be able to enjoy your every move knowing you won’t slip away. Also with the fully adjustable Showa front and rear suspension you will be able to dial in your riding style. Another awesome feature is the 4.3” touch screen display on the handlebars that gives you read outs on speed, turn by turn navigation, music and the list continues. It also has a unit under the seat that will allow the rider to remotely access information from an App on your smartphone such as battery life, time left until charged, trip planning nearest DC charging station and tamper alerts if anyone is trying to move your LiveWire motorcycle along with so much more. Now for what a lot of you are wondering! How far will it go and how long does it take to recharge. Well on a full battery Harley is estimating 110 urban/highway miles. Also another benefit with the permanent magnet electric motor is it acts as a generator as well. When you let off of the throttle the motor not only is slowing you down but it also puts electrons back in the battery that adds to the charge and distance. As for charging

Page 20

www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

RE..BOOM! you have two options. One being a power cord that allows you to connect to your home outlet. This will take overnight for your bike to come back to a full charge so look at it as you are resting and your LiveWire is as well so you both are fresh for the next adventure that awaits. Then comes the fast charge which is capable from a DC charging station that has a CCS connector like most electric cars that are out now. This can fully charge your battery in about an hour so while your getting yourself a quick bite to eat or checking out all the other bikes here at the shop you will be ready to take back off and enjoy your ride. When someone says Harley-Davidson most people think of loud pipes! Well Harley has made a unique sound out of the New LiveWire. The sound increases as the throttle is twisted, giving the rider an idea of how fast they are going and also allowing people in vehicles to hear you as well. You will have three color options to choose from which are Vivid Black, Orange Fuse & Yellow Fusion. Then comes the big questions and that is price! The LiveWire starts out at $29,799 which might seem like a hard price tag to swallow but think about it like this. It’s the first EV bike that Harley has put out and no one does R & D like Harley so you know you are getting a Premium bike that will give you years of enjoyment. Harley also has mentioned that we will be seeing some New P & A for the LiveWire from windscreens, foot & hand controls along with much more. I can’t wait to see what else Harley-Davidson brings to this New family. They have already shown us a few other concept EV bikes that plan to be released in the future. The scooter will be a perfect urban EV that looks to be small enough to not require a license. Then they have another that resembles a Dirt Bike and WOW! That just looks like it will be fun to rip on and off road. I will be providing more information as it is released so come on in or check out our website for the latest LiveWire info. We have two more seminars planned for you all this month on 2/9 & 2/23. The first is on Performance and the last one will be on the latest product available from some of our aftermarket company’s. They both will begin at 10am with free donuts, coffee and giveaways. Another big event every February that we have is Ladies Intro to Motorcycle Riding. This is on 2/21 at 6pm and only for the Ladies. So give Sandy or myself a call and RSVP as space is limited at all the events. Also we will have a new class called “Stop the Bleed”! This is sponsored by our St. Charles Harley Owners Group and is one hour long. During the class you will learn how to apply pressure, pack a wound and apply a tourniquet. The classes are in February and March and you must register for this class by contacting our HOG Director, Dan Bauer @ 636-544-2481. Check out our Facebook page and Website for all the latest info. From Events, New product & the latest info from Harley-Davidson on the all new LiveWire. This year is going to be packed with lots of events and fun for you all. Thanks again for taking the time to read this and please come into St. Charles Harley-Davidson and ask for me, Zach White or give me a call @ 636-946-6487 and also by email, zach@stcharlesharleydavidson.com to set up a consultation! I’m here to make all your Harley-Davidson dreams come true! www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

CRACK UP’S A husband and wife have four sons. The oldest three are tall with red hair and light skin while the youngest son is short with black hair and dark eyes. The father was on his deathbed when he turned to his wife and said, “Honey, before I die, be totally honest with me: Is our youngest son my child?” The wife replied, “I swear on everything that’s holy that he is your son.” With that, the husband passed away. The wife muttered, “Thank God he didn’t ask about the other three.” __________________________

A woman’s husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet she stayed by his bedside every day. One day he told her, “You have been with me through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were there. When we lost the house, you were there. When my health started failing, you were there. Picture a wire window screen that is interwoven into a second screen at an angle. Now add another screen at a slightly different angle, and another angled different again, and so on. Then take the meshed web of screens and dip it in a liquid plastic. Now press or heat it until the materials fuse together. That is what CARBON FIBER REINFORCED POLYMER (CFRP) looks like. CFRP is a crystallized substance used in the automotive engineering and manufacturing industry that is on the rise, and can be helpful during your fabrication of performance parts and overall build to get the most speed and fuel economy out of your ride. Carbon Fiber (CF) is the production of carbon atoms formed in a regular hexagon, better described as a honeycomb shape, that bond together as crystals aligned parallel to its long axis of the fiber. They are combined with other materials, usually a type of thermoset resin. The liquid monomers of the thermosetting plastics are used to cure and reinforce the carbon polymer chains into a molded composite referred to as to Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). The flattened ribbon fibers are bundled together to form a durable weaved tow. The tow is a reel of thousands of continuous individual carbon filament cylinders with a diameter of 5-8 micrometre. That’s thinner than a strand of hair. The most common form of Carbon Fiber in the auto industry is turbostratic. These types of fibers are derived from a semi-crystalline organic polymer resin precursor of CF called Polyacrylonitrile (PAN); where the sheets of carbon atoms are folded or crumpled together at random in no specific systematic direction. In other words, the crystal structure of that flat surface base of atoms slips out of its axis alignment. It is thermally oxidized at 230 degrees, and then carbonized at 1000 degrees to make the fiber. Although being thermoplastic, it melts above 300 degrees if heat rates are 50 degrees per minute or above. What this means is it doesn’t melt under normal conditions, and degrades before melting. These composites have a high tensile and compression strength. The material can withstand the ability to be manipulated before the capability of breakage when heated above their glass-liquid transition activation temperatures. This is in part due to a lower density from the resin matrix as an epoxy binder. Being formed with resin and with this type of alignment - by a method of heat, pressure, or a vacuum; the result is a light weight, high strength to volume ratio material that exhibits greater stiffness and rigidity even at lower temps. The CFRP can also be reheated and reshaped repeatedly without the loss of its material properties. So flexible when heated, and stiff when cooled. This makes for easy shaping in the auto body world. --- Let compare materials that vehicles and their parts are made from: Steel and Carbon Fiber

Reinforced Polymer. Steel is an isotropic material. With this type of metal, the expansion of it is equal in all directions when thermal energy is provided. The heat makes the atomic particles vibrate, so need room to move around. The steels particles increase in volume due to sliding over each other in the same plane. Carbon Fiber on the other hand has directional-strength properties by anisotropy; otherwise, unequal physical properties along different axes instead. Whereas steel modifies in its volume as a response to heat changes by temperature; CFRP has a negative coefficient of thermal expansion and does just the opposite - It contracts upon heating. Resin has a positive coefficient. When combined the result is near neutral, allowing the material to operate in a wide range of temperatures. This means in a chemically changing environment, the composite will still react to your benefit when it comes to your vehicles performance. --- Here is more of how your physics lesson on Carbon Fiber is of importance to your vehicle. Compared to steel; Carbon Fiber composite material is two-thirds less in weight, yet five times stronger and two times as stiff. Eliminating weight from your vehicle makes a lot of sense. Less to haul around means less energy used where greater performance results and lesser cost of fuel. --- Adding to the perks is that CFRP is safer than steel. When a vehicle made out of Carbon Fiber composite material crashes, the atom particles dissipate so energy doesn’t transfer to your body. The vehicle will diminish in speed from the gradual breaking of material; making it safer because it resists the impact. CFRP is not flexible once molded and cooled, nor does it have plastic deformation due to its stiffness. Metal does have deformation, meaning it can change shape and it will stay that way. With that being said, steel would crumple WITH you in a vehicle, and you might die. CFRP would crumple AROUND you and disperse most of the force elsewhere instead of your body absorbing it. All in all; the car shatters and you don’t. All of the external body parts of a vehicle can be fabricated out of this composition that could save your life while taking pounds off of your vehicle. In regards to temperature factors; internal parts ranging from the valve covers, intake manifold plenum, engine covers, pistons, push rods, heck even the actual block can be changed to reduce heat in the engine area. CFRP can account for as much as 50 percent of a car’s volume, while contributing to only 10 percent of its weight. The only hurdle to the use of this composite material is waste disposal. Due to its properties having a high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance, and low thermal expansion; CFRP cannot be melted down. Plus, unlike steel, when recycled it isn’t as strong as it was before for use to construct another vehicle. The production of these composite materials is also more expensive than steel. The argument is whether the differences in the overall manufacturing process of body-making and parts yield cost savings to assist in offsetting the total costs to build. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

HEARTBREAKER S

o many of you that know me have seen my ’52 Chevy Gasser and my ’63 Corvette Roadster. Both are cool and lots of fun to drive but, when I saw Dan & Shelia Moon’s 1963 Corvette Sting Ray, I was love at first sight. Talking about having the best of both worlds, Heartbreaker has is it all. You get the sleek flowing lines of the Sting Ray and the look of the Nose High Gasser attitude. The look of this Heartbreaker sitting still is quite impressive, but when you see it carrying the front wheels down the track with ease really takes your breath away. With the look and performance of the fuel injection with the crazy stacks on the open header Chevy Big Block motor, you know this is going to be a fun ride. To help achieve this Gasser look you need to first have chassis mods starting with the stock Corvette frame. From there, adding to the back half and adding a straight axle front with coil overs at all 4 corners, Flaming Rivers Vega steering box, Hair Pins and steering links with all of the mounts made by Dan & Casey Moon at Competition Services; this Gasser starts to take shape. To help get Heartbreaker up to speed quickly, the “Strange / DANA S-60 with 4:88 gears and the Mickey Thompson 15”X12” rear wheels and 15”X4” front wheels with M/T 10.5”-31X 15” slicks and 26”-4.5X 15” Skinnies up front help get that job done. It is very easy to see that a little more room for the slicks was needed. So Dan took the time needed to Radius the rear wheel openings.

The rest of the body and paint work was performed by the Late and very talented George Eid (RIP) and Shannon Smith at Iron Horse P&B in Rainsville, Alabama. A (Gulp) load of Porsche Indian red was used. Even though the interior is pretty much OEM you still need Auto Meter gauges to keep you from getting in trouble with the tach front and center on top of the original speaker grill. Who needs a radio in a race car like this anyway? When I asked Dan if he had a special story about this ride he told me the car was an IHRA Modified car that had made it’s way to NHRA Super Gas. The previous owner had started to turn it into a Pro-Street ride but when Dan bought it he finished putting it together. Not sure what direction to really go with it, but he knew he was going to love this car. But still owning another Corvette; a 1957, which is also a Gasser, he towed it to a Southern Outlaw Gasser Race and was instantly taken in by that type of race and classes. Since the 1957 was an older 1960’s equipped race car, Dan really didn’t feel safe racing it, so he told Shelia the 1963 has all of the sfafety equipment on it and it should really be the car they race. Now that they converted it into a Gasser… it has made the journey from Super Gas, back in time to be A/ Gas. Dan said he likes how this car is so easy to tune and work on for being a door car. Since he is a former chassis builder, he knows it responds to changes in a positive manner with no surprises. He keeps thinking they will over power it, but so far it handles the horse power very well. And with all of the match races with the Southern Outlaw Gasser’s always adding more HP will continue to be his plan of attack. Everyone knows we need the help of others with our rides and Dan is no different, he knows Family…absolutely. He could not/would not have done it without the help & support of his wife Shelia. His youngest son, Casey (Crew Chief & sometime driver) his buddy Steve Brubaker at Pro-Formance Specialities for all of the One-Off pieces & his dear friend George Eid for the gorgeous red paint. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com
