How’s it going Full Throttle readers! It’s Keigan again! I hope everyone
is staying safe this riding season and enjoying these sunny days were getting into. The topic of this article is going to be on something I’ve been getting a lot of questions on at the dealership. With the weather finally breaking we are getting a lot of people that are wanting to add some power to their bikes and they really aren’t sure how to go about it or what the upgrades entail. So, I just wanted to do a little write up on some info for everyone to clear things up a little. The topic is Stage kits. As a Harley owner were always looking to upgrade the sound, and speed of our bikes, and that exactly what the SE stage kits do. So, let’s get into it.
If your anything like myself you’ve never said no to more horsepower or torque, and if you have, maybe you’re not riding a Harley Davidson. From the factory a Harley Davidson motorcycle comes ready for the owner to upgrade and get the most out of their new machine. One of the first things riders ask about is a new exhaust. A common phrase I hear around the dealership is, “I want it to sound like a Harley Davidson.” So, what all needs to happen to the bike for it to sound like a Harley. I can help customers achieve the sound they want but more goes into then just an easy set of slip-on exhaust. The main focus of upgrading your motorcycle is to make the bike perform at its highest potential and that’s what the Screaming Eagle Stage kits do. So were going to break it down, from stage 1 all the way to stage 4. Stage 1: Stage 1 is probably the most popular and it sets a solid foundation for the future stages if you choose to go further. Stage 1 includes, Exhaust, Intake and a good tune. The main focus of a Stage 1 is to move more fuel and air. By doing so, your bike will run better and get better gas mileage and help achieve the coveted Harley Davidson sound. The stage 1 upgrade is going to be ideal for the rider who is looking to upgrade the overall look and sound of their bike. For a stage 1 set up your options are endless when it comes to exhaust and intakes. The tuners are a different story though. If you still have factory warranty intact then we have to go with the screaming eagle pro street tuner, this allows the warranty to stay active. If you are outside of your factory warranty there are more options that will allow us to tune your bike or even allow you to tune your own bike right from your phone via Bluetooth. Stage 2: Stage 2 is a simple stage but for the new M8 platform it is the most impressive. All stage 2 does is adds a new cam to the engine. Harley offers two types of cams, torque cam and the power cam. The torque cam increases the performance of the bike up to 15%. It’s going to be a low to mid RPM cam which gives you crisp and responsive throttle acceleration. The torque cam is ideal for riders who cruise and find the need to pass slower

vehicles without having to downshift. The horsepower cam increases the performance of the bike up to 25% and is a mid to upper RPM cam. The horsepower cam delivers a nice amount of power for the adrenaline seeker. Stage 3: Stage 3 gives you big bore cylinders and pistons. When you’re doing big engine modifications you have to make sure your engine can support the work you’re doing. Larger cylinders are going to increase the power throughout the entire RPM range. With the bigger cylinders your engine is going to swallow more air and fuel, with higher compression pistons, it helps squeeze all of that into an explosive formula which results in a 35% performance increase over stock bikes. A stage 3 kit provides the rider with the ability to pass traffic without downshifting, and provides the power you want, when you want it. Stage 4: Stage 4 is the final step without going to a crate engine. Stage 4 is bigger cylinder heads and throttle body. With the bigger cylinder heads and the enormous throttle body, you’ll be maxing out displacement, compression and flow which allows you to experience the highest level of pure Harley Davidson power. When it comes to the stages I think it goes without saying that you can’t have a stage 4 without having stage 1,2 and 3. They all work in secession with each other. To move to a stage 2 you have to have all the components from the stage 1 present and so on and so on. Despite what you hear in the rumor mill, you can do these engine upgrades to the bike and still keep the factory warranty active. If you have any questions related to that please reach out to me. This was a shorter article, but I feel with the ever-growing performance-based motorcycles, this was an important topic to get some info out there, so you all know what you’re going to be getting into once you start your modifications. The combinations of parts are endless, so you have the ability to make the bike stand out and perform how you want it to and to suit your riding style and needs. I want to thank you all again for taking the time to read this article, I’m having a lot of fun writing them and introducing you guys to some cool trends and parts that are coming to market, so I hope you all are enjoying reading them. If there is a topic you would like me to write about, please shoot me an email at Keigan@stcharlesharleydavidson.com and I will see what I can put together. With that being said, if you guys have any questions on my build or your current build please don’t hesitate to reach out to me out St. Charles Harley Davidson (636-946-6487) If you have time, come by the shop and check out some of the builds we have going on right now. Thanks again everyone and enjoy the ride! www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

ave you ever been riding down the road and suddenly, you are getting pinged in the face and hands with all the dry dusty road debris? It feels like getting stung by little baby bees. Not a fun experience. You think, “it’s time for that windshield, I guess?” You go searching this brand and that brand, not really knowing what will be the best fit for your bike. You start talking to your buddies, asking them what they like. One person says, “get this brand, it’s the best.” Another says, “That brand is OK, but this one, in this style is way better.” “Yeah, but no windshield will give you any level of hand protection” another chimes in. All you keep doing is scratching your head, not able to decide. One of your friends mentions “Fairings”. Now, that’s a thought. Not only would you get more protection on your face, but your body and hands as well. You start doing your research and everything you come up with doesn’t seem to have a cool look about it. Almost an afterthought…..Well, technically it is. But that’s besides the point. Of course, fairings or any other type of accessories are afterthoughts. The hope is that what every you do to your ride, it’s looks like it was supposed to be there from the start. Then it happened, you come across a website, www.WideOpenCustoms.com and It’s all about the fairings….these fairs ROCK! The complexity and the simplicity are extreme unique. Custom paint options, windshield options, radio options and a HUGE variety of motorcycle fits. Here’s a little bit about Wide Open Customs and Owner, Ben Coppock. “Let me introduce myself. I’m Ben Coppock, owner of Wide Open Custom Plastic, LLC; a division of Westirland Industries. I’ve been in the ABS Plastic business making ground effects on buses for over 25 years and have been an avid bike rider for 27 years. Several years ago, I traveled to Sturgis, South Dakota and saw a fairing on a Heritage Softail. I decided I could do a better job and went home, designed a mold, put it on my bike and loved it! Better yet, my friends loved it and through word-of-mouth folks started contacting me to build them one. Thus, Wide Open Custom Plastic was born! From that first Softail fairing, I’ve expanded to include many other makes and models of fairings. The best part, I can now truly enjoy winter riding without the wind hitting my hands and you just can’t beat listening to your favorite tunes while cruising down the road………. WIDE OPEN!” Page 20

OPEN CUSTOMS
Like I mentioned before, Wide Open Customs offers a huge variety of motorcycle fairing fits. Harley-Davison (Including Freewheelers), Indian, Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki, Triumph, Victory and Custom bike as well. One of the most BasAss fairings that Ben makes is their new Road Glide Air Flow that fits a Freewheeler. That fairing is a game changer for this style of trike.
With this new Air Flow technology, they can now other fairings like the Road King Air Flow, the softail deluxe Airflow to name a few for the Harleys. For Indian riders, they have a Scout fairing, a Chief fairing and even a fairing for an Indian Springfield. The list can go on and on. It’s as simple as a few clicks of a mouse to place your order. Choose your motorcycle make, then choose the style of fairing, then choose your paint. (if you have a custom color you will need to call). Choose the size of windshield and then choose the type of radio. And there you go. It’s delivered with install instructions and all the wiring you will need. The best part about these fairing is they are NOT FIXED…. You do have to have it locked in place but, they do not have to be permanent. AAAANNNNDDDD. They attached to your existing quick release windshield brackets on your front forks. Of course, if you never had a windshield you will have to get those brackets. But that’s easy enough. Simple ordering, simple install but all the complexity of a BADASS FAIRINGS. I guarantee you that you will get A LOT of head turns. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

Sorry Boys, No Men Allowed!
WOMAN IN MOTORCYCLE HISTORY
ast month I gave you a brief overview about how women were just as big of an influence in the motorcycle industry as men. Over the course of the next several months, I’m going to talk about these women and how they helped sculpt the world of motorcycles. Back in the early 1900’s women did not have the same rights as men. They couldn’t join the military; they couldn’t vote; heck, it was even taboo for women to wear pants. Women tended to the home and to the children; that was their place in society. Two young sisters by the name of Augusta and Adeline Van Buren, AKA Gussie and Addie, were considered “Society Girls”. They were descended from Martin Van Buren, the eighth President of the United States. These aspiring females wanted to change the way society looked at women. In their early twenty’s they were active in the national Preparedness Movement. They wanted to prove that women were just as capable as men were to serve as military dispatch riders. Their argument was that by allowing women to be an active part of the service, it could free up the men for other tasks. They also set out to remove one of the primary arguments for denying women to vote. In 1916, the two sisters set out to prove to the country that women are very capable motorcycle riders. Dressed in military-style leggings and leather riding breeches, on July 4th they saddled up in Brooklyn, New York on their individual 1000 cc Indian Power Plus Motorcycles equipped with gas headlights. The Indian’s they road were considered the top of the line for this era; costing $275.00, and ran Firestone “non-skid” tires. There were no helmet laws back then, so the only thing they wore was goggles and a leather cap. Also, there were no major thoroughfares, so the road conditions were less than favorable. The sister’s endured muddy, rocky, and extremely dry conditions. They were the first women to reach the 14,109 summit of Pikes Peak by any motor vehicle. This journey that began in Brooklyn took them 5,500 miles and just over two months to complete in their travels that ended in Los Angeles on September 8th, 1916. After their journey, Adeline submitted an application to the Army proving that women were very capable of riding through the rough mountain terrain; her application was denied. Motorcycle publications described their journey as a “vacation” and focused more so on praising the motorcycles, but nothing about the sisters. Others reported the sisters used the Preparedness Movement as an excuse to forego their roles as housewives. Even during their journey, they were arrested several times; not for speeding, but for wear men’s clothes. Through all the obstacles, they endured a heavy challenge and came out on the other side. They eventually married. Adeline continued her career in education and earned her law degree from New York University. Augusta became a pilot and flew in Amelia Earhart’s Ninety-Nines International women’s flying organization. She also played a significant role in the women’s rights movement. In 1988, the sister’s achievement was honored by four female AMA members with the “Van Buren Transcon”, a fund raising effort for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The fund raiser was supported by Honda, Kawasaki, Susuki, and Yamaha. In 2002, they were inducted into the AMA’s Motorcycle Hall of Fame, and in 2003 inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.
