Well folks, by now we have had several great bikenights under our belt and I don’t know about you, but it sure does feel good to start getting back to normal. Make sure you come out to Bobby’s Place in Valley Park every Wednesday for our Historic Route 66 Bikenight and say hey and who knows, you might just see yourself on our Facebook Page or in the Magazine. Since things are starting to get back to normal we are starting to see a lot more events being scheduled. Mid-America Harley-Davidson in Columbia has loaded up their calendar throughout the rest of the summer. Blue and BBQ to Parking lot Swap Meets to plenty of rides. Make sure you check out our Crusin’ Calendar and Mid-America’s ad this month for all their events. "A Ri de A Da y Ke Have you ever had one of those days where you just wanted to scream and run for the hills? Or felt an insurmountable obstacle that you just couldn't overcome. Well, studies have now shown that hoping on your motorcycle is just what the Doctor ordered. Harley-Davidson set out to prove a theory that the health and well-being of an individual can change by simply hoping of the back of a motorcycle. In doing my research, I can across this article that spells out their research and findings.
"A UCLA study funded by Harley-Davidson has revealed a selection of potential mental and physical benefits to riding a motorcycle. Many motorcyclists champion riding as an invaluable tool for stress relief and positive mental health – and now the results of a neurobiological study conducted by UCLA researchers has yielded pioneering scientific evidence to support that claim. Researchers recorded participants’ brain activity, heart rate, as well as levels of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol before, during, and after motorcycling, driving a car, and resting – and found that motorcycling increased metrics of focus and attention, and decreased relative levels of cortisol, a hormonal marker of stress. While riding a motorcycle, participants also experienced increased sensory focus and resilience to distraction. And that’s not all – riding also produced an increase in adrenaline levels and heart rate, as well as a decrease in cortisol metrics – results often associated with light exercise and stress-reduction. Dr. Don Vaughn, the neuroscientist who led the research team, said: “Stress levels, especially among young adults, continue to rise, and people are exploring pathways to better their mental and physical health. Until recently, the technology to rigorously measure the impact of activities like motorcycling on the brain didn’t exist. The brain is an amazingly complex organ and it’s fascinating to rigorously investigate the physical and mental effects riders report.” The study found; Page 10

• Riding a motorcycle decreased hormonal biomarkers of stress by 28%. • On average, riding a motorcycle for 20 minutes increased participants’ heart rates by 11 percent and adrenaline levels by 27 percent—similar to light exercise. • Sensory focus was enhanced while riding a motorcycle versus driving a car, an effect also observed in experienced meditators vs non-meditators. • Changes in study participants’ brain activity while riding suggested an increase in alertness similar to drinking a cup of coffee.
UCLA Professor and senior team member Dr. Mark Cohen, said: “While scientists have longstudied the relationship of brain and hormone responses to attention and stress, doing so in real-life conditions such as these is rare. No lab experiment can duplicate the feelings that a motorcyclist would have on the open road.” Dr. Vaughn added: “The differences in participants’ neurological and physiological responses between riding and other measured activities were quite pronounced. Is it because it’s un-inhibiting, a sense of freedom, an adrenaline rush? I would say yes and much more. It’s the feeling of exhilaration, the wind racing past you. When you are racing down the highway are 60, 70 or 80 mph and then you come to a stop, how your skin is tingly, the hairs on your body are standing on end. Your senses are heightened; everything from your reflex actions to your sense of sound and even smells. In the springtime, when the trees and flowers are in full bloom, take a ride and smell how the honeysuckle is so sweet in the air. You can never experience that traveling in a car. Or in the middle of a beautiful Summer day when you are riding down a curvy road and you come upon a glorious canopy of trees that shelters you from the hot sun and how the shade gives off a cool breeze. Motorcycle Enthusiast Takes
From 1956 to 1969, BMW in Munich Germany produced the R60/2. They were available in
3 colors Granada Red, Dominican Blue and Standard Black. They had a top speed of 90 mph with 30 hp. The Twin-loop steel tubular frame with a long swinging arm with strut and oil pressure shock absorbers, drum brakes weighed in at 430 lbs wet of course. They were designed primarily as rugged motorcycles to pull sidecars. Now let's fast forward to today as Dan Primm of Lexington, KY has found to be one of the lucky ones to own such a highly built BMW from back in the day. Unfortunately, Mr. Primm had a dent appear in his tank. As Mr. Primm scouted for ways to repair he found a gentleman by the name of Stephen Hamby out of Griffin, GA who claimed he could repair tanks without repainting them through a method called Paintless Dent Repair (PDR). Now as many of my readers know, I like to spread the news of what the Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) industry calls MPDR which stands for Motorcycle Paintless Dent Repair. While PDR technicians can do remarkable repairs some are and some aren't so great. It really depends on the ability of the technician and if the repair is truly a good candidate for PDR or in the case of our articles MPDR. Let me introduce to you and tell you a little about Stephen Hamby of Pro PDR of Georgia. His father began training him in the Paintless Dent Repair business at the early age of 15, that was in 1999. He spent his first few years learning to master this trade by helping his father repair door dings and minor dents at local dealerships and body shops. However in 2014, approximately 7 years ago he decided to take on a task that most PDR technicians fearfully stay away from and that is MPDR. Removing dings & dents from motorcycle tanks and fenders. "It's definitely not an easy task and it takes much experience with the need of specially designed tools outside of what most PDR technicians have. Nor do they really have extra time or the building to master it" says Hamby. Mr. Hamby is one of the most well known MPDR technicians in the country. He has a huge online presence with his website www. motorcycledents.com and videos through youtube that he has worked hard showing some of his most elaborate repairs ever done. He is a pillar in the PDR industry and has always shown to help others along his way. But to say he's a pillar in the world of MPDR is a true understatement. He's more like a MPDR God. Alright so let's get back to this story. I have no idea how this prestigious BMW motorcycle got damaged. But it did, and when Dan Primm of Lexington, KY became aware that his tank could possibly be

Tank to New Horizons repaired by means of Paintless Dent Repair by seeing a video online of Mr. Hamby. Primm quickly reached out. After discussing the process Mr. Hamby recommended that Mr Primm ship his tank to him to see if it was a good MPDR candidate. "Customers usually spend a couple hundred dollars just in the shipping process to ship the tanks to me to repair, not considering the time to drain, remove and clean the tank before shipping and after the repair" says Hamby. Unfortunately as I know first hand just because a tank arrives at your repair location clean and off the bike doesn't mean it can be repaired. So this process can be very unfortunate while other times it's the best repair process possible. As Hamby and Primm spoke more in depth about the process Primm asked Hamby "Don't you have a small airport in Griffin?" Hamby said yes we do. Primm said well I have a small plane, how about I just bring it down myself with a friend and we will meet you and have lunch. The two agreed to meet and review the tank repair, Hamby deemed it to be a good candidate for MPDR and the rest is pretty much history or you could say the tank flew off to new horizons. While speaking of the actual process of the repair I asked Hamby How difficult was this repair? "Not really too difficult, usually when you get a repair like this on an older bike, the main concern is what condition the paint is in. Is it original or a repaint? You know you're going to have to be pretty gentle with it" Hamby replied. Many of the old paints had pinstripes as we discussed and many stripes were hand painted back in the day which is another concern of MPDR when trying to maintain the original finish which absolutely will help hold the true value of these special rides.Motorcycles are no different than vehicles. Who wants to paint them if it's not really needed? And then the case who will? What shop do you take it to? If it has cracked our deeply scratched paint absolutely but if its a dent that hasn't damaged the paint why would anyone want to change the factory paint? Hamby, who is also an avid rider, reported last year he completed over 60 motorcycle tanks with 85% of them being shipped from out of state. This year he has already responded to hundreds of requests and has completed 40 repairs to date. He offers in most cases a 2-3 week turnaround time and it's important to understand that all repairs that are mailed to him must have a returned prepaid label. Hamby says he will answer anyones questions no matter if it's a customer or technician and I can vouch for that Hamby always returns my calls and is always willing to help anyone he meets. Hamby believes there are only approximately 10 guys really focusing on MPDR currently and with articles like this we as an industry hope we can bring much more attention to this unique field within our industry. H
ow’s it going Full Throttle readers! It’s Keigan again! I hope everyone is staying safe this riding season and enjoying these sunny days were getting into. If you had significant winter projects on your bikes that have come to an end I hope everything went about as smooth as they could, but if your anything like myself, a 5minute job turns into a 3 day project with a lot of yelling and trips to the shop for supplies. My personal bike underwent a lot of changes this winter. I made significant modifications to the bike to help me ride harder and do a lot of traveling this year on the bike. I’ve already taken a trip to Moyers Oklahoma, Dallas Texas and Table Rock lake, which were awesome trips, but what I’m looking forward to the most is my Labor Day trip to Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming. It’s a trip I’ve been wanting to do for a long time and this year I’m finally able to make it. For this article I wanted to get away from the product reviews for a minute and take a give you guys an update on my bike, as I get a lot of questions about the upgrades I’ve made and why I made those changes to the bike. The new trend in the Harley Davidson right now is performance-based motorcycles. Performance based motorcycles are centered around pushing the bikes to the limits and modifying them so you can not only push them to the edge, but also enjoy them while putting thousands of miles on them while traveling the country. One of the first changes I made was the suspension on the bike. I decided to go with the Roland Sands Design Fox mono shock. The shock is 13.5 inches, so it gives me an inch and a half lift in the rear while also giving me a 13inch shock travel. The suspension has 3 settings available so I can set it at my preferred riding setup. The shock is a significant upgrade from the Harley suspension and almost makes the back of the bike feel like it’s not even there. It allows me to ride a little more aggressively in the corners and keeps me comfortable while out on the road. Another noticeable change I made to the rear of the motorcycle is the carbon fiber fender and side panels. By adding these carbon fiber parts it shaved a little weight off the bike, but it really made it a standout one of a kind softtail. The fenders and side panels were made by LA Fairing Company and they look incredible. They were just what I was looking for to help with the performance look I was going for. I had to make some small modifications to get them to fit my bike but it wasn’t anything too crazy to get done. After adding the carbon fiber parts I knew I wanted to add different saddle bags to the bike. I needed more storage area and I really wanted larger bags that I could lock. So of course, I went with the Harley Davidson sportglide saddlebags. The saddlebags are a direct bolt on for the Lowriders and the Lowrider S. These bags gave

sf TO PERFORMANCE me the space I needed and the locking function I was after and they look great at the same time. In my opinion if you add the sportglide bags to a bike you have the perfect sport touring model, and that’s exactly what I was going for. While were talking about traveling needs, I also added a custom Saddlemen seat to the mix. I have a pretty terrible back which can make traveling on the bike a little difficult at times, so I decided to add the San Diego Customs saddle pro series seat. The seat is equipped with Saddlemen’s pro foam and gel core technology, but the most important aspect for myself is that it has a back rest built into the seat, so it gives my back the extra support it needs on the long hauls. I took the seat one step further and had them do a custom side by side red and blue stitch on it to flow with the colors of them bike. After getting the bike comfortable and handling like I wanted it was time to add some horsepower to it. To give it the low-end torque and power I was looking for I chose the S&S 475 cam, fueling lifters and lifter blocks, and screaming eagle adjustable pushrods. With this combination the bike sounds awesome but performs even better. I tuned the bike with a Dyno Jet Power Vision and that helped dial it in to 110HP, 119TQ and I can get about 42 miles to the gallon now. The 475 cam is a perfect low-end cam that just wants to make power on the M8 platform. So far, I’ve been very impressed with this engine set up and couldn’t be happier with the way the bike rides. The final thing I did to the bike is probably what really makes it stand out in a crowd is the powder coated wheels. I was on the edge about the color and changed my mind multiple times, but I decided to just let it fly and went with Prismatic Powders Illusion Red for the wheels. I was scared the wheels were going to be too much, but I think they tie into the bike and design of the bike really well. Well that’s the modifications I made this winter.
