Welcome to July 2022 Full Throttle readers, fans and fellow bikers. Things are happening in the area and lots of great events and rides are going on. Historic Route 66 Bike Night at Bobby’s Place in Valley Park is a great place to be every Wednesday evening, weather permitting. We always have a great crowd, great food, and good drinks. If you haven’t been yet, please, make a point to stop in and enjoy the awesome company of fellow bikes and the ladies of Bobby’s Place. Big St Charles Motorsports and St Charles Harley is back on Thursday July 14, 2022, with their HUGE Bike Night. Big Foot will be on the lot putting on a great show. Live music will be provided by Superjam. This is always the largest monthly Bike Night in the Lou, so mark your calendars. Never fails to be a Great Time at Big St Charles, always! They will host a second Bike Night on September 14th as well. Don’t miss these awesome Bike Night. Doc’s Harley Davidson is in full swing with their BBQ Saturdays again this year. Make sure to come by Doc’s on any Saturday and enjoy some great BBQ along with great deals on anything Harley that you need. HIGH-FIBER Picture a wire window screen that is interwoven into a second screen at an angle. Now add another screen at a slightly different angle, and another angled different again, and so on. Then take the meshed web of screens and dip it in a liquid plastic. Now press or heat it until the materials fuse together. That is what CARBON FIBER REINFORCED POLYMER (CFRP) looks like. CFRP is a crystallized substance used in the automotive engineering and manufacturing industry that is on the rise and can be helpful during your fabrication of performance parts and overall build to get the most speed and fuel economy out of your ride. Carbon Fiber (CF) is the production of carbon atoms formed in a regular hexagon, better described as a honeycomb shape, that bond together as crystals aligned parallel to its long axis of the fiber. They are combined with other materials, usually a type of thermoset resin. The liquid monomers of the thermosetting plastics are used to cure and reinforce the carbon polymer chains into a molded composite referred to as to Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). The flattened ribbon fibers are bundled together to form a durable weaved tow. The tow is a reel of thousands of continuous individual carbon filament cylinders with a diameter of 5-8 micrometer. That’s thinner than a strand of hair. The most common form of Carbon Fiber in the auto industry is turbostratic. These types of fibers are derived from a semi-crystalline organic polymer resin precursor of CF called Polyacrylonitrile (PAN); where the sheets of carbon atoms are folded or crumpled together at random in no specific systematic direction. In other words, the crystal structure of that flat surface base of atoms slips out of its axis alignment. It is thermally oxidized at 230 degrees, and then carbonized at 1000 degrees to make the fiber. Although being thermoplastic, it melts above 300 degrees if heat rates are 50 degrees per minute or above. What this means is it doesn’t melt under normal conditions and degrades before melting. These composites have a high tensile and compression strength. The material can withstand the ability to be manipulated before the capability of breakage when heated above their glass-liquid transition activation temperatures. This is in part due to a lower density from the resin matrix as an epoxy binder. Being formed with resin and with this type of alignment - by a method of heat, pressure, or a vacuum; the result is a light weight, high strength to volume ratio material that exhibits greater stiffness and rigidity even at lower temps. The CFRP can also be reheated and reshaped repeatedly without the loss of its material properties. So flexible when heated, and stiff when cooled. This makes for easy shaping in the auto body world.

--- Let compare materials that vehicles and their parts are made from: Steel and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer. Steel is an isotropic material. With this type of metal, the expansion of it is equal in all directions when thermal energy is provided. The heat makes the atomic particles vibrate, so need room to move around. The steels particles increase in volume due to sliding over each other in the same plane. Carbon Fiber on the other hand has directional-strength properties by anisotropy; otherwise, unequal physical properties along different axes instead. Whereas steel modifies in its volume as a response to heat changes by temperature; CFRP has a negative coefficient of thermal expansion and does just the opposite - It contracts upon heating. Resin has a positive coefficient. When combined the result is near neutral, allowing the material to operate in a wide range of temperatures. This means in a chemically changing environment; the composite will still react to your benefit when it comes to your vehicles performance. --- Here is more of how your physics lesson on Carbon Fiber is of importance to your vehicle. Compared to steel; Carbon Fiber composite material is two-thirds less in weight, yet five times stronger, and two times as stiff. Eliminating weight from your vehicle makes a lot of sense. Less to haul around means less energy used where greater performance results and lesser cost of fuel. --- Adding to the perks is that CFRP is safer than steel. When a vehicle made out of Carbon Fiber composite material crashes, the atom particles dissipate so energy doesn’t transfer to your body. The vehicle will diminish in speed from the gradual breaking of material; making it safer because it resists the impact. CFRP is not flexible once molded and cooled, nor does it have plastic deformation due to its stiffness. Metal does have deformation, meaning it can change shape and it will stay that way. With that being said, steel would crumple WITH you in a vehicle, and you might die. CFRP would crumple AROUND you and disperse most of the force elsewhere instead of your body absorbing it. All in all; the car shatters and you don’t. All of the external body parts of a vehicle can be fabricated out of this composition that could save your life while taking pounds off of your vehicle. In regard to temperature factors; internal parts ranging from the valve covers, intake manifold plenum, engine covers, pistons, push rods, heck even the actual block can be changed to reduce heat in the engine area. CFRP can account for as much as 50 percent of a car’s volume, while contributing to only 10 percent of its weight. The only hurdle to the use of this composite material is waste disposal. Due to its properties having a high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance, and low thermal expansion; CFRP cannot be melted down. Plus, unlike steel, when recycled it isn’t as strong as it was before for use to construct another vehicle. The production of these composite materials is also more expensive than steel. The argument is whether the differences in the overall manufacturing process of body-making and parts yield cost savings to assist in offsetting the total costs to build.

ow’s it going Full Throttle readers! It’s Keigan again! I hope everyone is staying safe this riding season and enjoying these brutally hot days we’ve been blessed with. I’ve finally got my bike up and running and it was just in time for my yearly trip. This year I’m headed to the west coast the ride the PCH and see the Red Woods. My last couple of articles have been on product reviews so were going to go a different direction with this one and I’m going to talk about Harley Davidson’s new Nightser. The Nightster was released a couple months ago and I wanted to see one in person before writing about it so I can give you all an honest opinion on the bike as its in a somewhat different direction than your normal Sporter. For those of you that haven’t seen the bike yet the Harley Davidson Nightster is the next chapter in the Harley Davidson Legacy. 65 years ago, Harley laid a great foundation with the sportster that has been easy for them to expand on in the following years. The 2022 Nightster is a leap forward in performance and style from the original sportster models. This bike is targeted towards riders that enjoy the size and look of the Sportster but are looking for the power the Revolution Max engine provides and riders looking for a quicker and more nimble motorcycle with superior handling. Let’s get into the looks of this thing which I think Harley really did well on. When designing the Nightster Harley did a fantastic job staying true to the sportster lineage and kept true to the classic sportster look while adding updated components. The air box cover is the most obvious resemblance to what we all know as the sportster. It shares its profile with the classic Sportster model fuel tank. For the Wheels Harley chose to go with a 19-inch front wheel and a 16-inch rear wheel. This combination is where you’re going to get your nimble performance but still give it a distinct profile and style with the black 7 spoke sport wheels. Moving to the back of the bike they kept the rear fender nice and short like the previous Nightster models. The 2022 Nightster chassis isn’t your traditional hoop-style sportster frame. Instead, it uses the powertrain as a stressed member which significantly reduces the weight which results in a very stiff chassis. The new chassis still allows for rear exposed shocks which nowadays is where all the sexiness comes from. The weight distribution on this bike is some next level stuff. Harley was able to use ultra-light material and with a few shifts to certain components placements, has helped reduce overall weight. The new design centralizes the engine and fuel cell lower in the chassis which makes the bike

feel extremely light, enhances performance and improves overall rider confidence when mounting and maneuvering at low speeds or carving through corners. The Nightster has a lean angle of 32 degrees on both sides. When you’re looking at the bike you can see the resemblance but its very easy to notice the biggest difference and the center of attention on this bike, and that’s the liquid cooled Revolution Max 975T engine. The Revolution Max 975T is a liquid cooled V-Twin, tuned (90hp) to make tremendous torque at low RPM’s (70ft-lbs) which delivers strong acceleration out of the hole. With the new power combination Harley was able to get the bike to produce 52.4mpg during city and highway riding. Not only is the Nightster packed with a new power package but it is home to the newest and greatest technology Harley Davidson has on their bikes. The Nightster comes with anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction control system (TCS), and drag-torque slip control system (DSCS). With this collection of technology, it helps the rider’s confidence in unexpected situations and while riding through not so perfect road conditions. The rider safety enhancements are designed to adjust and match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration, and braking. The systems are all electronic and utilize the latest chassis control, electronic brake control and powertrain technology. Included with all the technology you get 3 riding modes to choose from. Road Mode, Rain Mode, and Sport Mode. Choosing the right mode for you is going to help the bike perform better in certain road conditions while enhancing your riding experience. This is a bike you must see in person to fully appreciate the design Harley Davidson went with on this bike. I has on the fence about but after seeing it in person I think Harley did pretty well. The bike is powerful, comfortable and nimble which is the perfect combination for a fun and awesome looking motorcycle. "So then why did you eat it?" __________________ A curious mom uses her new iPhone to text her daughter to ask a very important question. The text reads: What does IDK, ILY, TTYL mean? Before long, the daughter texts back, "I don't know. I love you. Talk to you later" to which the mom responds, "It's okay. Don't worry about it, I'll ask your brother. Sorry Boys, No Men Allowed!

ne of the main reasons that I chose this series to write about was because it shows
me how powerful women can be. Sure there are a lot of powerful and influential women in the world. But this is a motorcycle and car magazine right? So talking about Margaret Thatcher would seem out of place. What I’m focusing on are all the power women who have changed the motorcycle industry. So I press on. Next up is Bessie Stringfield. She is the First woman to ride a solo trip across the United State eight times. Bessie faced two changes in your endeavors; one being that she was a woman and the other that she was an African American Woman. Bessie Stringfield, also known as BB was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1911. She brought to the US but sadly was orphaned at the age of five. She was taken in and raised by an Irish woman who gave her anything that she wanted but taught her that if there is anything that she needed she should ask the Lord Jesus Christ for it. Bessie was also taught that she can be anything that she set her mind to be. At the age of sixteen, she wanted a motorcycle. She asked her Irish mother for one and she got one. It was a 1928 Indian Scout. Bessie knew nothing about motorcycles. She didn’t know how to work the controls or how to maneuver the bike around. When she started working everything she appeared to be a natural. She said it must be the man upstairs giving me the skills. Bessie felt happiest when she was on two wheels; especially when she was on the back of a Harley. Even though she loved her Indian Scout, there was nothing like a Milwaukee Iron. She owned 27 Harley-Davidsons throughout her life Page 22

At the age of 19 she grab and penny and a map of the United States. She tossed to penny up in the air and wherever it landed that’s where she rode her motorcycle. Eventually she hit all 48 mainland state. She did hill climbing and trick riding for carnival stunt shows all the while stating that she received all of her skills from Jesus Christ. Her strong faith is what got her through so many nights. Having to combat that fact that she was a female motorcycle rider in the 1930’s and 1940’s and that she was African American made it difficult to find shelter for the night. There were many nights that she would pull into a gas station and she would lean back on the gas tank using her jacket as a pillow and propped her legs up on the rear fender to use her bike as a bed. There were other times that she would encounter polite strangers of the same ethnicity who would take her in for the night all the while knowing that the Lord will always provide for her. Throughout her travels, Bessie managed to married and divorced six times. She was unable to carry a child after enduring three miscarriages. After divorcing her third husband, Arthur Stringfield, he told her to keep his name because one day she will make it famous. While the US was going through World War II, she worked for the Army as a Civilian Military Dispatch Rider. She was the only woman in her unit. Bessie went through rigorous training maneuvers. Honing her skills to deal with the toughest terrain; crossing over swaps, tree limbs, makeshift bridges. Even though see acquired all these skills, she never had to use them in the line of duty. Bessie moved to Florida and bought a house in the suburbs of Miami In the 1950’s. She became a licensed practical nurse and founded the Iron Horse Motorcycle Club. She won a flat track race but was denied the prize money because she was disguised as a man. She would frequently display her stunts like standing on the seat of her Harley while it was in motion. These antics would draw a lot of attention from the press. She was eventually called the “Negro Motorcycle Queen” and later Motorcycle Queen of Miami”. Bessie died at the age of 82 due to complication of an oversized heart. She was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2002. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com
