Finding Your Sound! As most of you know, maintaining EPA compliance on your bikes Model Year 2017 and newer is very important to retain warranty coverage for your powertrain components. For those of you who do not understand what that entails it means that if you have a Model Year 2017 and newer Harley-Davidson motorcycle that has been tuned using a tuner or calibration that is not covered by a California Air Resource Board (CARB) Executive Order or otherwise approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) you will have no powertrain warranty.
The good news is there are plenty of options for exhaust on the market that would allow you to use the Harley-Davidson Pro Street Tuner, which is a compliant tuner. If you have a Harley from the Touring family, you have the ability to change out your mufflers and install a set of slip-ons. Your Catalytic converter is actually located in your headers, rather than your mufflers like the Softail Family. This means you are able to install slip-on mufflers without even having to use a tuner on your bike as long as your header remains stock. The 4.5” MotoPro 45 Slip-On Exhaust for Harley Touring Bikes is a fantastic option for someone who is looking to stand apart from other bikes. According to Rinehart, “with a stout 4.5″ muffler body and our proprietary Hi-Flo baffles already installed, the MotoPro 45 Slip-On Mufflers have an unmistakable heart-pounding sound.” Not only do they sound great, they also look amazing. Another fantastic option for you are the 4 ½” MK45 Performance Mufflers for S&S Performance. These mufflers are sharp looking. These Mufflers are available in a beautiful chrome or black ceramic body finish. You’re also able to choose between two different end caps; the Thruster end caps, and the Tracer end caps. These mufflers are also featured on the S&S El Dorado True Dual Exhaust System. If you want to install a full system on your bike, do not worry as there are compliant full systems as well. As mentioned before, the El Dorado True Dual exhaust system features the 4 ½” MK45 Performance Mufflers. This exhaust system produces a deep bass rumble throughout the RPM range. One of the biggest features on this system is the fact that the Catalytic Converter is relocated from the header and placed in the Mufflers. This help reduce the heat riders feel. I am amazed that we are already into September. Bikefest is right around the corner starting Weds September 11th through Sunday September 15th. This year is going to be a great year for Bikefest. Marking the 13th annual, this event has grown year after year and has become the largest bike event in the state. There are so many scenic rides to take in while you’re there and hundreds of bars, restaurants and hotels to enjoy their food and drinks and just have a great time. Be sure and spend some time on the Bagnell Dam strip; it’s one of the most popular evening spots. There is a good selection of restaurants and bars to keep you busy. If you’re thinking about a new bike stop by and see the guys at Head Indian Motorcycle who will be setup on Bagnell Dam Blvd between Horseshoe Bend and Osage Pkwy. They will have the Indian Demo truck with them, and you can test ride a new Indian Motorcycle. Stop in and tell them FTM sent you. Shady Gators is a spot you will definitely want to check out. They are having some awesome concerts during Bikefest featuring Jackyl on Friday September 13th and Whiskey Myers on Saturday September 14th. Gates open at 6pm with the opening acts starting at 7:30 follow by these amazing bands at 9pm. They will also be having a fund raiser, Bikini Bike wash on Saturday afternoon. Shady Gators is just a great place to stop anytime during Bikefest. Great food and beverages. The Lake Ozark Harley-Davidson dealer, as always, will have an awesome Vendor Village with great deals on bikes and apparel. Don’t forget to purchase your Passport Book and participate in this fun ride to get a chance to win a NEW Harley Davidson Motorcycle. You can purchase the Passport Book at any of the participating bars, restaurants or at the Harley Dealer. Full Throttle Magazine is proud to present this event again this year. The books are $20.00 each and you make the ride to the twenty-four stops having your book stamped at each one. After you have completed all twenty-four stops, turn your book into the Passport Booth at Lake Ozark Harley-Davidson. Sunday a winner will be drawn and they will take home a New Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. It’s that simple. Someone will win, why not you! If you haven’t made room reservations yet, you better get moving because many rooms are sold out and you don’t want to miss this event. I hope to see all of you at this year’s Bikefest. I would like to personally thank everyone who comes out to Bobby’s Place in Valley Park every Wednesday evening to help make this Bike Night a HUGE success. This year had a rough start because it seemed like it rained every Wednesday evening for the first several Bike Night. Bobby’s Place offers drink specials and great food every Wednesday evening and has live music starting at 7:00 on the lot. If you haven’t made it out yet, please make a point to ride out for this event and join in the fun. Bike Night will continue through the end on October. Where To Take Your Next Ride
ave you recently been contemplating where to take your next ride? Well if so, you are in luck. Full Throttle Magazine is going to inform you of some of the top-rated rides in the United States of America. I am going to take you on a ride up the mountains, through the forest, and along the most beautiful oceans, roads, and scenery the United States offers. These rides are ones that you need to put on your bucket list A.S.A.P. Because these are the rides that we all live for. The first ride I am going to tell you about is a very popular one. Especially if you have been to the Black Hills in South Dakota. South Dakota is where the largest motorcycle rally in the world is held once a year; Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Although there are many beautiful rides in South Dakota, Needles Highway is ranked towards the top of them all. Needles Highway is a beautiful, yet challenging ride through the Black Hills. The northern 14 miles of Highway 87 are known as Needles Highway. Which is known for its sharp turns, low tunnels, and impressive granite spires. The road lies within the 73,000 acre Custer State Park, 30 miles south of Rapid City. Also, while you’re there you must go and check out Mount Rushmore. It is truly an amazing work of art. Since we are already in South Dakota the next ride this beautiful state offers is Spearfish Canyon. This 22-mile breathtaking journey begins at Exit 10 off Interstate 90 in Spearfish, and connects to the mouth of the canyon at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club. The Spearfish Creek lines the canyon floor while canyon waterfalls make for popular and amazing roadside attractions. Bridal Veil Falls and Roughlock Falls are two must-sees along this route. Although the speed limit is 35 miles per hour, which seems very slow, you’ll find so many riders distracted by the beauty, and drive even slower. Others simply pull over at one of the dozens of pull-offs along the way, and get out to stretch their legs and capture the perfect Kodak moment. Now, let’s take a trip to Tennessee/North Carolina where many say is home to the most challenging ride in the US. It’s called the Tail of the Dragon. With 318 hairpin curves in only an 11 mile stretch of road, you are in for the ride of your life. Designated US highway 129, bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest, with no intersecting roads or driveways to hamper your travel. This is considered the destination for thousands of brave motorcycle riders. But the question is, can you handle the 318 tight curves, a.k.a. switchbacks. This ride is challenging for even the most skilled riders. But the breathtaking scenic mountain’s and national forest will leave you mesmerized. So, when you decide to take the trip to Tennessee/North Carolina to ride the Dragon’s Tail, please be very cautious as the turns are tight. Notice how I said “when” you decide to take the trip, not if, because this is a must ride if you are a true motorcycle enthusiast. I encourage you to please observe the 30-miles-per-hour speed limit on the Dragon's Tail. If anything, go slower; those hairpin turns are extremely tight. Beside, the highway patrol has cracked down heavily on those drivers looking for a thrill on the Dragon's Tail due to the high number of deaths on that stretch of road. Always watch out for other drivers and motorcyclist. Even if you abide by the law and go the posted speed limit on the Dragon's Tail, other drivers may not. The Dragon's Tail sees many severe accidents every year. So be vigilant while traveling the road. Always be safe and legal by going the posted speed limit, and it is guaranteed to be the ride of your life. Next ride up, The Twisted Sisters. This 100-mile loop is, without a doubt, among the best, most challenging motorcycle roads in the state of Texas. The route follows canyons and climbs jagged, steep hills. The roads offer many tight, twisty curves with shear drop offs alongside and not much in the way of guardrails. In one 15-mile section, there are approximately 65 curves! Experienced riders bliss out on this ride. Don’t forget to top off the gas tank before heading out. A ride through this part of Texas will most certainly change your view of this beloved US State. You will ride amongst scenery that is as good as it gets, among crystal clear rivers, through very twisty mountain curves, along with real Texas ranches. With million dollar vistas and cool clear waters along with friendly folks. Just knowing that you are riding the best this state has to offer, truly makes for great riding. This ride is one of the top ten in the nation. It truly has it all. From the stunning scenery to the very challenging twist and curves. This ride really should be on your bucket list. The road conditions are good. The scenery is certainly beautiful, especially in the spring when it’s not too hot or too cold, and all the trees and cactuses are in full bloom. Also, the locals in this area are very welcoming and friendly to bikers, and they are truly glad to have you there to visit the state of Texas. Let’s jump into Arkansas and learn a little about the Pig Trail, or as some call it the Arkansas Dragon. Starting in the town of Ozark, which lies between Little Rock and Fort Smith, that’s where you will want to pick up on this trail. The rugged and densely forested Boston Mountain Region of the Ozark Mountains is the setting for this route, which

often runs through a tunnel of beautiful foliage during the spring, summer, and fall. Spring wildflowers and the vibrant autumn colors make this route very popular during those seasons. The scenery is not the only reason this is one of the top rides in the United States. You will encounter many hairpin turns, straight-a-ways, and drop offs where the cliff seems to be right next to you. There is also a very popular general store about half way through this ride. They have various stickers and souvenirs saying that you have completed the Arkansas Pig Trail/Arkansas Dragon. Just so you can tell all your friends and family you completed the Arkansas Dragon. The Pacific Coast Highway in California is a great place to go to take a week-long vacation and do some awesome riding. The reason I say you can plan a week-long vacation is because of the number and quality of the amenities along the coast. There are seven state parks along the way, a state reserve, a botanical area, and many interesting historical areas. You can spend hours at these state parks hiking and exploring the beaches. This world class scenic route takes you down route one, starting in Monterey, California and ending in Morro Bay, California. The route is one of the original nine routes to be selected by the US Department of Transportation as an "All American Road" which is a designation given to only the cream of the crop roads that are categorized as America's Byways. This route is part of a stretch that has been honored time and time again as a classic American road trip by countless books, magazines, websites, etc. Along this route you will see coastal scenery that will leave you breathless. Along with the beautiful ocean, the inland scenery is just as inspiring with its display of rolling hills, rock outcroppings, picturesque waterfalls, redwood forests, flowered meadows, lush valleys, and majestic coastal mountains. Along the route you will also see several lighthouses, 18th century Spanish missions, and a variety of animal life including sea lions, sea otters, sharks, sting rays, gray whales, brown pelicans, and monarch butterfly winter sanctuaries. This is not a ride you want to go and complete in one or two days. Take your time and enjoy the amazing state of California. Up next is the San Juan Skyway in the beautiful state of Colorado. Many riders who have cruised the San Juan Skyway will argue that it has the most beautiful sections the Rocky Mountains have to offer. As you follow a circular path through southwestern Colorado, you will pass through some very neat historic mining towns, national parks and forests, and a few world-class ski resort areas. On this trip, you will see the San Juan Mountains, home to many of Colorado's elite groups of 14,000-foot mountain peaks. Along the way you will see the red-rock canyons, lush river valleys, hot springs, and a ton of amazing mountain peaks. You want to be very careful on this route because of its countless numbers of hairpin turns and switchbacks, and many of them do not have guardrails, along with all the descents and climbs that seem to be endless. Make sure you take advantage of the many scenic turn off points to take a good long look at the scenery. Maybe snap a few pictures as well. You will be surprised how glued your eyes will be on the scenery. Keep in mind, this alpine route will have you riding at over 10,000 feet three times on its path. Some bikes, like some humans, struggle at these kinds of altitudes. So please be careful. Lastly, don’t forget when planning any bike trip through mountains, always keep in mind that the snow sticks around a lot longer, and the weather can be completely different. Now let’s go to the Tunnel of Trees Road in Michigan. The southern entrance to the Tunnel of Trees Road is about 35 miles southwest of the very popular tourist stop of Mackinac Island, which is located in the Straits of Mackinac. "The Straits" is the waterway which separates Michigan's Lower and Upper Peninsula. This ride takes you down the eastern shoreline of lake Michigan through a very dense forest. Also with its very narrow and twisty roads that run through the dense forest, you must always keep your eyes on the road ahead of you. The Tunnel of Trees truly reminds me of a road that you would see photos of in a travel magazine. As you look ahead of you down the narrow Tunnel of Trees, you cannot help but wonder what is going to be around that next sharp curve. Well, you will just have to go their yourself and find out. Last but not least is the Beartooth Highway. This ride takes you along a 68-mile stretch of US Highway 212. Beartooth Highway is the perfect example of what a great bike ride should be. With tons of crazy hairpins turns and switchbacks, this definitely isn’t a ride for new motorcycle owners/riders. Beginning at Red Lodge, Montana, the National Scenic Byway is like a roller-coaster ride as it travels up through Beartooth Pass (10,947 feet) in Wyoming. It zigzags the entire way as it cuts across the Custer and Shoshone National Forests. There are so many amazing rides in The United States of America. Full Throttle thought it would be helpful to our readers and followers to talk a little bit about some of the most beautiful, challenging, and historic roads our country has to offer. You could choose to cruise anyone of these rides and I’m sure you will have a great time. Always remember to give your bike a good look over, or have your local mechanic do it for you, to make sure everything is perfect before going on any of these rides. The last thing you want is to get stuck 14,000 foot up a mountain without any phone service or nearby amenities. the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. Summer is coming to an end and my favorite riding season is just around the corner. This month we have our last two bike nights. September 12th we welcome back the Wall of Death. If you haven't got to come check this out make sure to mark it on your Calendars for some fun entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. The bike nights come to an end for the year on September 26th as we do our Calendar girl Finale and welcome back the Midget wrestling that is sure to entertain all of you. This month I want to chat about what Harley-Davidson has in store for us as the 2020 model year is out and on the showroom floor. I got to ride up to Milwaukee and attend the 2020 Harley-Davidson Annual Dealer Show and see first hand. Let's get started on some of the key things new for 2020. Last month I talked about the Livewire coming to our dealership and also about our Livewire Master Techs thoughts. Well our first stop as we rolled into Milwaukee was the Harley Museum where we got to test ride the all new EV Livewire. Like Mike said before, "Once you ride one you will want to buy one"! This bike is FAST and just amazing. It was a group test ride so I didn't get to see its full potential but I gave myself some room between me and our Sales Manager, Rich! I started out in Rain mode just to get the hang of the bike. Then, I looked down and put it in Sport mode. The gauge showed 25 mph so I double checked to make sure I still had some space and then twisted the throttle. When I looked down to see what speed I had reached it showed 50 mph. I was in shock the amount of speed just by a quick twist of the throttle. The bike also has amazing motor braking power as well. I caught myself grabbing for the clutch at the first stop light we came across but didn't even think about not having one after. Come into the shop and chat with me and I can go on and on about the thrill of riding the new future of Harley-Davidson. I can't wait to get our first one on the showroom this month. Also in the mix of the Livewire Harley had on display some EV prototype bikes to show off whats yet to come. Another prototype that really caught my attention even more was the Adventure Touring and Street Fighter. They will be in the line up of Harley-Davidson's soon. They already had some accessories for both of them on display to see. They both look like a lot of fun and will be bringing more riders from the other sport bike brands to Harley-Davidson. I didn't get to put a leg over any of the prototype bikes but just getting up close really got my head spinning with excitement for the future. This year Harley brought a new CVO to the family, the Trike. With a 117 ci Milwaukee Eight engine and decked out in all the bells and whistles you will be riding in style right from the showroom floor. New to the Softail family, Harley brought back the Lowrider S. This is my new favorite Softail model and I can't wait to ride one. It just feels aggressive while sitting on it. It has the old style with all the new updates. Also in

the Softail family you can now get your Heritage with all the shinny chrome like most of you have been asking for. In the Touring family Harley has two options for the Ultra Roadglide, blacked out or chrome from the factory. Also in the touring family they changed the middle right control to a back button & turn signal which is a great feature to help keep your eyes on the road. On all Touring fairing bikes they will come equipped with H-D Connect. This will allow you to know where your bike is right from your phone. Come in and check out all the new bikes that are showing up weekly. Harley every year releases New Parts & Accessories and this year didn't change. The Onyx Premium Luggage Collection has any travel bag you might need. The UV-resistant finish will keep it looking new for years to come. Also for the tactical style bags Harley released the all new overwatch bags. From handlebar bags to a dry bags for the sissy bar they have really hit all corners of style and function for travel bags that go on your motorcycle. Something that we have all been waiting on that would put the finishing touches to your blacked out bikes but seems to be hard to find. Black Hardware kits for your engine covers. Now you can put gloss black hardware on the bike instead of the bolt covers that get destroyed if you need to take that cover off. They have a new wheel out for the Touring bikes that I thought looked really good. The H-D Prodigy wheel is available in black or bronze! This year Harley released three more collections to the line up. The "Ride Free" collection has your motor covers, grips & foot controls. The "Voltaic" collection is available in grips & foot controls. The last collection is just foot controls and they are the "80grit" collection. These are the perfect fit for an aggressive rider and remind me of BMX pegs. Harley came out with some new Moto handlebars & risers along with a color matched Quarter Fairing for the softails that look great together. To finish off the parts side of things Harley every year comes out with a numbered custom paint set. This year its called "Mayhem" and I can't wait to get one in and put it on the showroom floor. We should have it on a bike in December so make sure to come check it out before it's gone as these bikes don't stay on the floor long. Now onto Motorclothes and a couple new items that will be available in the store. The first I want to chat about isn't clothing but it's for the next generation of riders. Harley introduced the all new Irone12 & 16. These electric powered balance bikes are made for children ages 3-7 and the perfect training tool for riding a motorcycle. They have three settings to build up as your confidence rises. For the every day rider Harley came out with some new riding gear. The Vanocker waterproof jacket and overpant is good for all your riding conditions. With vents on both pants and jacket you won't get warm in the summer but will stay dry. In the boot section Harley introduced the all new Vented Series boots. These new boots are made to keep your feet up to 54 degrees cooler and come in three different styles. Last in the Harley motorclothes area they have a new pair of jeans. The bootcut fit performance modern jeans will keep you dry with the wicking denim so your next ride will be more enjoyable with these comfort jeans. I wore a pair on my ride to the dealer show and I will say they are the most comfortable pair of jeans I have owned. MAKING A CHILD’S WISH COME TRUE
They say, by granting a child one wish, it can alter their ability to keep
moving forward with life and the treatment they need to give them a fighting chance. A child that is given a fighting chance to live, is a child who can withstand their odds, a child who won’t give up; a true warrior. The Make-A-Wish® America does just that. They grant wishes to those children that are critically ill. Some of the illnesses are cancer, heart conditions, cystic fibrosis, seizures/epilepsy, and chronic kidney disease. The age range between 2 ½ to 18 years. But why a wish? National survey of the Make-A-Wish® “Community” including health care professionals, wish families and volunteers conducted by TCC Group from 2010-2011 found a profoundly high percentages showing how a wish can have such a positive impact on a child. 89% of health care professionals believe it influences that child’s health. 81% of parents observed the increased willingness to comply with treatment. 74% of parents observed a true turning point in the child’s response to treatment. 99% of parents reported the wish experience gave their child an increased feeling of happiness. 96% of parents said that the wish strengthened their families. 97% of wish families observe increases in their child’s emotional health. These percentages are staggering. All from one wish….JUST ONE! “Did you know in the fiscal year of 2018 Make-A-Wish® Missouri & Kansas granted 419 wishes and they are projected to grant 433 in the fiscal year of 2019?” Make-A-Wish® would not be able to do all that they do without the help and donations from others. Two ladies, Linda “Pinky” Winston and Laura (Boone) Bergsieker wanted to make a difference. Laura Boone, A former member of Freedom of Road Riders and Shadow Riders of St. Louis, had a long career with Non-profit organizations. Starting with March of Dimes as an employee, she headed the committee for the Missouri/St. Louis Bikers for Babies assisting with organizing and running that event. Even though she enjoyed her time with March of Dimes, her heart was pulling her to another worthy cause; Make-A-Wish®. As Laura began her time there, she always made sure she stayed in contact with her friends at FORR. Pinky was an avid rider and a member of Freedom of Road Riders. She always carried a love and compassion in her heart for children. One afternoon Pinky and Laura were talking and Pinky stated that they needed to do something to help all those wish kids, she wanted them to start a ride, a Ride for Wishes. Laura told Pinky the first thing they needed to do was approach her CEO to get the all clear to move forward. Once they received the green light, Pinky and Laura knew they could not do it alone. Laura reached out to some of the

committee members that worked with her on March of Dimes, Bikers for Babies; Louie and Steve Weiss, Cathy Carroll, Cliff Connoyer, Cathy and Joe Ghiradi (Grandparents of “Cole”, A wish Kid who sadly passed away in 2015 and became an Honorary Ambassador in 2016), Wilma Harfmann and Greg and Susi Speas. As well as Jay Steinbeck. They all joined forces and in 2009 “Ride for Wishes” for the Make-A-Wish® Missouri & Kansas Chapter began with its first ride out of the Sara Lee parking lot in Earth City. It remained there through 2011. Then in 2012 it was moved to St Charles Harley-Davidson and has been there ever since. Laura, still employed with Make-A-Wish® at the time, became a committee member while Pinky and Jay were elected Co-Chairs that year and in 2010 Pinky resided as sole Ride Chair. In 2011 Pinky was dealing with a few health issue and had to step down as Chair. That year Henry Barchet was voted in as the new Ride Chair. If you ever had the privilege of meeting Henry, you knew how passionate he was about this cause. He was a ball of energy that never stopped. And if you got him talking, especially about Ride for Wishes, he would talk for hours. He gave so much of himself through all the years he was Ride Chair. He held that title from 2011 to 2017. But in the later part of 2017 Henry lost his life. It was sudden and a shock to us all; such a great loss. Henry did such a fantastic job as Ride Chair; with his passion, he was able to raise awareness and money for those Wish Kids. That next year, without Henry leading the pack, the ride felt solemn. But even with that, everyone pressed on. 2018 Sue Abernathy stepped into Henry’s shoes because she, along with the rest of the committee members knew Ride for Wishes must press forward. There were too many kids who needed their wishes granted. Not to mention, this is what Henry would have wanted. They all wanted to Honor Henry’s memory. “Did you know that Ride for Wishes have raised nearly $200,000 since 2009 and with this year’s donations they will exceed that number?” Here we are, 2019 and you better believe that the 11th Annual Ride for Wishes is going to be bigger and better than ever. You’ll see a lot of familiar faces along with a couple new ones that have joined the committee this year. Laura (Boone) Bergsieker is back and voted in as the Ride Chair. Standing beside her is Louie Weiss as Co-Chair and a new face among them is Mrs. Kimberley Graf of The Graf Group, LLC., as Chair Pro-Tem and Chair of Vendors and Sponsors. These three ladies are a force to be reckoned with; but they aren’t alone. The rest of their committee includes these dedicated and dependable members: Cathy and Charlie Carroll, Cliff Connoyer, Jim Danielson, Cathy and Joe Ghiradi, Wilma Harfmann, Jan “Phil” Phillips, Christine Settles, Angie and Steve Shirley, Al and Lori Silverstein, Greg and Suzi Speas, Steve and Louie Weiss, Ron “Hawk” Walters and Jim Wyrostek. Special volunteers are Caiden, Devin and Mckayla Shirley. This two day event is packed with all sorts of fun activities for all ages. I know that in the years past, it has always been in the middle of summer, but this year it was voted to occur on October 12-13 from 10am to 4pm each day. There will be a huge kids Korner full of games to keep them entertained for hours. There will be two dirt track race cars that kiddos and adults can sit in and get their pictures taken. All around the event there will be games set up for the adults to play. And can you say HOLY VENDORS BATMAN? This year marks the LARGEST vendor turnout to date. Shamrocks Pub and Grill will be donating food to all the registered riders on Sunday. And will have food and beverages (including adult beverages) available to purchase on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday, adult beverages will be available after 1pm. Saturday is the pre-ride event featuring pre-registration, Silent auction, bikes blessing, bike show and live music with Vintage Vibe Band from 1-4pm. Sunday festivities continues with final registration and silent auction. This year, they have a new Masters of Ceremonies, Steve Harris with KMOV TV. Police officer, Katie Gutjar will be singing our National Anthem and the Color Guard presented by Sons of The American Legion Squadron 397. The ride itself leaves promptly at noon on Sunday. It is a fully organized ride, sanctioned by AMA and police escorted through its entirety. There are motorcycle police officers from multiple jurisdictions coming out to ensure the safety of all the rider. You will be able to enjoy a sightseeing ride that will make a large loop back around to St. Charles H-D. There has always been live music both Saturday and Sunday. Doug Holly Band and The Chain Drive Band have donated their time since the beginning and once again, they will be gracing us with their musical talents on Sunday, October 13th from 1-4pm. They always feel truly humbled to play for those Ride Ambassador Children. Every year Make-A-Wish® Missouri & Kansas chapter choose two wish kids to be the Ambassador of Ride for Wishes. This year’s Wish Kids are Drake and Oliver. Drake is 12 years old and was diagnosed with a brain tumor in August 2018. After a biopsy was performed, it resulted in 90% of the tumor removal. With a few more complications and another surgery later, Drake is currently doing well and completed radiation therapy. His wish is to go to Gen Con in Indianapolis. Oliver is 8 years old and was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in November of 2018. He had his port inserted and began treatment. Despite how much Oliver’s life has changed, he has been strong and resilient. Oliver enjoys cub scouts, his baseball team, riding his bike, swimming and Cardinal Games. His wish is to go to Hot Wheels Headquarters in El Sequndo, CA. Building Dreams Take Time
This AWESOME 1968 Chevy Camaro Coupe is proudly owned by James and Geralyn Gloe. Jim is a Nuclear Engineer by trade and when he set out on this journey to build this beast, he wanted to take that knowledge that he has learned over his twenty-six years’ experience and apply it to a real breathing piece of machinery.
Jim has always been a gearhead. His first car was a 1968 Camaro, which he bought when I was just 14 years old. He worked on that car every day and ultimately took it to my high school prom in 1976. When I was gather all the information for this piece, I decided to let Jim use his own voice. So here goes: In the year 2000, my wife and I decided to build a ground up 1968 Camaro, and this time, it shall be without the limits and financial constraints I endured as a young kid. So, in 2001, we acquired this California car, pretty much rust free, for $6800. It was in sad shape to say the least, speaker holes cut everywhere including the transmission tunnel! Constructed of 1018 alloy steel box tubing, I TIG welded together my own rotisserie and began an 11.5 year journey. Constructed primarily with hand files, a welding machine, tons of sandpaper, muscle, grit, sweat and good friends, it was all about being high performance. It had to have excessive G-forces forward, superior handling, and must stop like a dog hitting the end of his chain. We wanted the outside of the car to be SEXY, not just pretty. The inside of the car had to have a new car feel; nothing too radical, simple, but nice. When it came to the engine compartment, trunk and undercarriage, it had to have an INDUSTRIAL, almost NUCLEAR QUALITY about it. No engine covers or trunk upholstery to hide anything. WE WANTED THE GUTS TO SHOW. I disassembled the car by bagging and tagging every fastener. I have over 600 pictures of the complete disassembly. Employing the talent of Kyle Tucker from Detroit Speed and Engineering (DSE), the body was media blasted to provide a fresh canvas for construction. DSE’s very own Paul Morgan began the project by replacing all belt line sheet metal with original GM NOS panels. I remember driving over 800 miles, one way, to purchase the left rear quarter panel. In addition, he minitubbed the rear wheelwells to accommodate my 335mm tire section width. Subframe connectors, tranny crossmember, and front suspension were also outfitted with the latest development from DSE. Paul Morgan of DSE did not stop there. He repaired countless small areas where speaker holes were cut, small rust areas, and modified the instrument panel to accept a modern stereo head unit. We utilized a stock frame in excellent shape which was purchased in Detroit. Frame modifications include sectioning main crossmember to accommodate a tall deck big block, boxing front crossmember, reliefs for headers and crank pulley, and reinforcing areas as necessary.

At this point, the car came home for my work to begin. I felt like I had a fresh canvas to create something really special in a 68 Camaro platform. My passion was to use the training and experience I had as an engineer in the nuclear industry. So the journey began building this car using all available nuclear processes and procedures. The top ten nuclear practices used to build this car are as follows. 1. Nuclear grade Swaglok tubing and fittings are used throughout. Where special fittings are required, Swagelok custom fabricated them. 2. Welding procedures used on all stainless steel and structural components are per ASME XI nuclear code. 3. Material of choice for all bracketry is advanced 316 stainless steel. 4.Electrical separation criteria used throughout, including isolating sensitive fuel injection computer wiring from EMF emitting power cables. 5. All wiring soldered per nuclear standard, including tinning, crimping, soldering, and double shrink tubing. 6. Corrective Action Program adopted where any problems with the build must go through rigorous process to access root cause, remedial actions, and corrective action to prevent problem recurrence. 7. All bolting torqued and documented to calculated specs using torque wrenches calibrated to the National Board of Standards. Where a torque was not specified, one was calculated. 8. Fuel cap housing is designed after an ASME Class I flange. 9. Single failure criteria: we minimized single failure issues, both push button and key start, polished gold plated electrical terminals where single failure could occur, and because of this, we even carry a spare tire. 10. The entire build is documented in logs that specify every action, including but not limited to every fastener installation, torque, size, etc. Also documented are validated procedures for front clip assembly, which is shim free, and engine installation. And so the assembly in bare metal began with the intention of mocking up everything possible down to the drivetrain, interior hard parts, and even the electrical relay mounting holes. As an example, our engine dipstick tube was fabricated from nuclear grade 316 stainless steel and was constructed and mocked up in the bare metal phase of the car. It was finally time for custom sheetmetal work and paint on all surfaces. To this end, we enlisted the tireless help of: Tony Goodrich from Tony’s Rod and Custom, Bunker Hill, Illinois. I will never forget when I first met Tony, we were lying under the car discussing how to hide all wiring and my wife makes the comment, “Jim, I think you have finally met your match”. The rest is history. Over the next three years, Tony gave me a very much needed second wind. Based in Bunker Hill Illinois, Tony took on my project with the passion I was looking for. We would end up working together for years on this car until completion. Taking me under as an apprentice, Tony employed me and taught me how to form and shape sheetmetal. We would work together on the build until late hours every night. Using Tony’s expertise and me to do the cleanup and grunt work, he fabricated the rear spoiler from cold rolled steel and hand formed 14 gauge sheetmetal. But we didn’t stop there. We also added rocker panel extensions which extended the body 2” lower on the sides, with ground effects on both the front of the front tires and behind the rear tires. We also modified the hood underside to accommodate the tall deck big block engine. The 1968 Camaro “hood ornaments” were just the ticket for this car, BUT factory pieces were made of potmetal, easy to fail, and hard to chrome plate. So then began yet another project. With the help of Dean Rodgers to perform Solidworks 3D programming, we designed new hood grilles out of billet aluminum, 6061-T6 alloy to be exact, made them twice height for appeal, and employed Baumgartner Race Cars to do the CNC work. grilles to Sherm’s Custom Plating where they applied show chrome quality. We also made them functional by cutting holes in the hood and constructing 316 alloy stainless steel vents on the underside to allow that big block heat to escape. As progress continued in the mockup phase, it soon became time for the engine. To that end, it was important to me that we purchased directly from GM Performance. They have a research and development department in their performance division that rivals world class standards. We were afforded the opportunity to first hand observe our tall deck big block 572ci “beast” get built at Performance Assembly Solutions in Livonia, Michigan. Built to applicable design specifications, Gary completed the assembly as we looked in awe at the technology used. Our next journey was to Keith Roberts Racing Engines in Mooresville, North Carolina. We completed dyno break-in of the engine and an initial fuel injection tune. Using a custom built 4L80E electronically controlled transmission, we contacted Mark Bowler who provided the billet 3200RPM stall lock-up torque convertor. For fuel, oil, and transmission fluid lines, both hard line stainless tubing and hoses, we contacted Scott Carlson from St. Louis Division of Swagelok (Swagelok.com), a supplier of stainless steel tubing and fittings that I was familiar with from experience in the nuclear industry. Using a dual ferrule design, 316 alloy stainless steel, and crimped hose ends, this system was leak free, easy to install, and provided the perfect industrial appeal we were looking for. Some fuel fittings had to be custom fabricated by Swagelok. When it came to paint, Tony Goodrich applied the appropriate muscle to create a mirror finish using a 36” block sander while in primer mode. He then applied the Dodge Inferno Red color and topped it off with six coats of clear. Block sanded and buffed, you can read fine print in the reflections. I always loved the D90 sport stripe but was never fond of a white or black color so we experimented and found our seventh formula of “home brew” Inferno Red to be just right. High strength stainless steel fasteners were used throughout. A minimum of 170,000psi yield strength, ARP and 17-4 precipitation hardened wide flange six point bolts were used. Majority of bolts were torqued to design spec, if critical bolts had no specified torque value, I calculated one. The “572” emblems are cut from brass, hand shaped, and chrome plated. Font is custom made on the computer. In limited low stress applications where an ARP six point wide flange stainless bolt was not available, I would cut the body of both bolts and TIG weld together for the proper bolt head and length/thread. One example are the hideaway headlight cover hinge screws. Even the shift knob for the “Gloe” shifter was hand made. We applied “RustBullet” coatings in all areas vulnerable to rust, both interior and undercarriage. Mostly crevices and rest prone areas. The coolant overflow tank is hand fabricated from stainless steel and uses all Swagelok fittings and tubing. To show our Faith, we had a cross made from stainless steel by blacksmith artist Joe Gentile from the East coast. He started with a square of stainless, unfolded it like origami under heat, and final polished the cross that now sets on the rear glass lower center. When the car was ready for upholstery, Scott and Gary Long arrived to tackle the task. They set up a sewing room shop in my living room, a work area in my basement, and worked around the clock while sleeping on my sofa. We ate three square meals a day. “It was so exciting to have such talented people in my home, much less working around the clock on our upholstery”. I could not find acceptable header gaskets for my engine, regardless of where I looked, and this was because back then, they were just not available. Most people were waterjetting copper but I’m not a big fan, so we decided to design and construct our own set. We enlisted Percy’s High Performance to implement our dimensions but make them as a set of Seal-For-Good gaskets. This technology uses six layers of really soft .010” aluminum, and has proven to be absolutely leak free. These gaskets are now available at Summit Racing as part # PHP-66089. The one thing that I would do differently if I had to do all over again was to have met Richard Nedbal much earlier in the build. Called FastmanEFI out of Sonora, California, he helped me via email, set up my fuel injection software to get the car started, and has been a really great resource when I get in over my head with sequential fuel injection. (When I first got the car finished, I could not get it started because my fuel injection tune was corrupted.)
