ave you ever thought about working as a Riding Coach? Do you have a love of riding and teaching?

Perhaps, you should think about being a Riding Coach for one of the dealerships or one of the colleges.

There is a shortage of coaches in the area to accommodate all the new people who want to learn to ride. With all the craziness of COVID, we have had so many more people calling to talk about riding a motorcycle. People are looking for a way to clear their mind and smile more. Riding a bike does just that!

Doc’s has a Harley-Davidson approved riding course, called Riding Academy. We are almost at the end of our classes for the year. Usually, we start in March and run the classes to first part of November. We have a smaller class because of the size of our range. There are typically 6-7 people in a class.

Everyone has to become approved by the state of Missouri’s Motorcycle Foundation by completing a series of tests. The other component is to have each coach attend one of H-D’s Riding Academy class. It might sound perfect for you because it gets you involved with bringing your passion of riding to others. The classroom setting is teaching and engaging the students. There is an on course riding instruction and testing on one of the ranges.

The students are very nervous and need some positive direction to guide them through this too.

Classes are on the weekend or during the week. Each place can decide what will work as long as every subject manner and skill is taught and tested. At Doc’s, we have a Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday day class and a weekend class. The weekend class is the most popular. It starts at 6:00 pm on Friday and goes until 9:00 pm. On Saturdays, the Coach is on the range with the student along with some teaching in the classroom. The time is typically 8:00 am5:00 pm. On Sundays, the coach will give the test.

We provide all our students with a Harley-Davidson 500 Street Bike for the purpose of learning and maneuvering the course. These bikes are light weight and easy to manage.

Organization is very important when it comes to learning to ride a motorcycle on a training course. We will have our bikes set up and ready for you to begin the course. All we ask is that you work a minimum of four classes per year.

If this Riding Coach sounds like something you would like to pursue, give us a call or any of the other dealerships or state schools. There is definitely a need for great Coaches.

To build great riders, we need great Coaches. This can be for people who work have a full time job, part time job or retired.

The Coaches are respected and feel terrific watching their class graduate. This is the time to get started for next year!

Sad to see the riding season coming to and end. This has been a year of many canceled rides and events. Most of the country has experienced stay at home orders, business closed and the ability to do the day to day things we took for granted put to a halt. My heart goes out to the business owners that have been forced to shut down forever because of the pandemic. There have been so many financially affected by the lockdowns and I for one wonder how much of all this has really been necessary.

I am not looking to start a debate or an argument but what are the real numbers of this Covid problem? How many people have really died of Covid and how many have been tagged with it that were never infected with it? I just know I never thought I would see in my lifetime, so much of our country shutdown and forced to wear masks everywhere we go. Businesses closed for ever, families in financial ruins because they aren't working and everyone told they can't do this or can't do that. I can only hope as we get out of 2020 the end of this pandemic is near & we ever get back to what was the old normal. The other problem is the people who persist to destroy, loot and change our entire way of life. I can only say from my point of view if you hate this country, our laws, History and freedom then you are certainly free to go to a country that you like. Let's all hope we can get past this soon and get back to having great rides, events and enjoying each other's company without social distancing and wearing a mask.

We are working on Historic Route 66 Bike Night for next year already with the hopes that we can get the permits and the green light to start in April of 2021 and make it a Weds Night weekly event again. We managed to get 2 Bike Nights in July and then Valley Park and St Louis County shut us down. We look forward to seeing everyone next year to carry on our tradition at Bobby's Place in Valley Park.

On a positive note the Lake of the Ozark Bikefest was the largest attended and most successful rally in the 14 year history of the event. It is estimated somewhere around 140,000 bikes made it to the event and all the hotels, bars and restaurants were hopping. Lake Ozark Harley Davidson and their Vendor Village had a constant flow of bikes making it a great success for them as well. The dates for the 2021 Bikefest event have been set and we hope to see you next year on September 14th through the 19th. We will host another Passport event next year and give away another NEW Harley Davidson Motorcycle.

Fall is here and in full swing and it just so happens

to be one of my favorite times of year to ride!! The weather is cool and brisk. The sunset happens earlier yet gets prettier. The trees along the rolling hills are changing to their brilliant colors and my fiancées favorite thing of all…pumpkin spiced everything; mainly the beer. You guessed it, it’s that time of year again; hay rides, bon fires, hunting and fall rides!

As we wind down the riding season some of our time in the saddle goes from plentiful to non-existent. Some good habits can be forgotten, and old bad habits can resurface. As there are less and less bikes on the road the “cagers” aka cars, see us less and become more lax in their situational awareness. So, as always be aware of the cars and traffic around you as they may not be aware of you, no matter how loud your bikes are.

Run down your check list and make sure the bike is fully functional before your fall ride.

Some of us put a ton of miles on during the season and don’t realize how much wear and tear we really do. Even those who just go out once in a while should do the same. A bike that sits tends to sometimes have more issues than ones that don’t. Low tire pressure, low fluid levels, dead batteries, etc. And as always, be sure to check the blinker fluid too, it may just save your life.

Yes, that was a joke, but it got your attention! Check those bulbs all round.

We work hard at maintaining our motorcycles. We also need to perform maintenance on our riding habits. These are all things we have talked about and can get old going over and over them but that’s how good habits are formed. So, let’s talk about the things we don’t think about. This time of year seems to produce some higher than normal wreck reports involving two wheels. This is contributed to many factors.

All summer we have nice days and clean roads. In the fall we have leaves on the road, morning dew, heavy rain fall that brings road scat and gravel into the road, and my worst nightmare…deer!

DEER ! inopportune places and the cool dewy air sets in. Wet slick leaves can cause both front and rear end to wash out just like gravel. The best things to remember are a few pointers I took from one of our MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) instructors here at Big St Charles Motorsports with our Beginners Riding Safety Class, Mr. Charlie Brown. I started by asking him what his best advice is on deer strike situations. His answer was not what I was expecting. He said “Well, don’t hit the deer...”

I gave him a blank stare and he replied “If you are using the SEE method you shouldn’t have an issue.” What is the SEE method? 1: Search = search means to scan aggressively for potential factors and hazards. 2: Evaluate = to evaluate means to anticipate problems. 3: Execute = three action steps make up the execute phase (a): adjust speed, (b): adjust position, (c): communicate your intentions.

What all this really boils down to is watch what is going on ahead of you as well as around you. Be sure not to fall victim to the “fixation” factor. As an issue comes up we have a tendency to “track” said issue. Always remember that where the head and eyes go, the bike and body follow.

If you focus on an impending issue your chances of hitting it are damn near 100%. Always follow through your turns passed any issues.

Now deer can be another issue; they have minds of their own. They never seem to do what you think they are gonna do. Also, they don’t come with hi beams, reflectors, horns, or blinkers; what do you do? Me, myself, and I, tend to stay outta the wooded areas around dusk and around this time of year. The bottom line is it’s a wild animal; there is no predicting what it is going to do and/or how it is going to react. The best bet is to be aware yourself. Scan for eye shine in the turns and straights. Most times they will freeze but be mindful; they could dart at any time. As riders it’s a leisure trip for us to hop on the bike but as we relax we must also stay alert. Thanks for stopping by and y’all enjoy the ride! www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

"Winter Riding" How's it going Full Throttle readers? Zach White here to give

you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson.

Hope everyone is enjoying the cool air of Fall. The leaves are changing and the day light is getting shorter. The leaves are falling from the trees, so be careful on the roadway, as they will be very slick. With the colder weather on the way, we want to make sure you can extend your riding season into the late fall and early winter. Harley-Davidson has come out with many different ways to keep you com-fortable in the cooler weather.

First, I want to share some things to think about before you head out on your next ride. Always keep a battery tender on your bike so you know it will be able to turn over without any hesitation. Also, check your tires before every ride. I know I say this frequently, but the tire pressure drops a lot as the temperatures start to lower. The big kicker that a lot of people don’t think about is the wind chill. A normal Fall day for us is in the low 60s. If you’re riding at 60 mph on a 60-degree day, that makes the wind temperature in the low 40s. Stay warm by wearing the proper accessories on yourself, and considering the following add-ons for your motorcycle.

There are a few things you can do to help cut down the wind. One of the best things to help keep it off your core is to install a windshield, or for those riders that have a fairing on your bike, get a taller one. To help keep the wind off your legs, Harley has hard fairing lowers for the touring family, in addition to soft low-ers. As long as you have an engine guard mounted on your bike, the soft lowers will buckle to your frame and be supported by the engine guard. This combination will limit the amount of wind hitting you directly as you’re cruising down the road.

A couple other great things to have are heated grips and a heated seat. Have you ever enjoyed a ride on a 65-degree day, but as the sun went down, it got colder than expected? If you forget your chaps and winter gloves on a day like that, these items will help keep you warm. And when you’re comfortable on the bike, you’re more likely to have a quicker reaction time,

so you can get home safely. Also, since the sun is going down earlier each day, make sure you can see and be seen by installing LED’s on the front and rear of the motorcycle.

Next, let’s cover wearable items for the rider and passenger. The best year-round riding gear that Harley has to offer is from the FXRG line. This line gives you multiple layers to keep you warm and dry. The base layer will help you regulate body temperature and manage moisture against your skin.

These Air guide Channels work like spacers against a heavier top layer.

They also have Iso-pads across the shoulders that hold warmth next to your body. The outer layer from FXRG is waterproof, and will keep the heat in while all the vents are closed. The FXRG thinsulate Mid-Layer insulates against the cold by trapping air close to the body for greater warmth and comfort during your fall and winter riding.

For the lower half of your body, FXRG has Waterproof over pants that attach to the outer layer jacket to help keep all the cold air from your body. Also, they have a base layer to go under your over pants. Some of the other items offered in the FXRG line are Full Face helmets to keep the wind off your neck and face, waterproof gloves, and textile style jeans. If comfort, protection, and quality are what you are after, the FXRG line has something for everyone. One of my favorite things about FXRG is that their jackets and over pants are backed by a limited lifetime warranty, so you will have peace of mind knowing you will always be covered for your next adventure on two wheels.

The last clothing items I want to talk about are for those riders that continue riding through the winter, even when temperatures start to drop into the 30s & 40s. If you are that person, then Heated Gear is a must. I rode in those temps once before I invested in some heated gear, and I couldn’t believe the differ-ence it made! The Heated Mid-Layer Jacket, waterproof riding over pant, & waterproof Gauntlet gloves all connect to each other. They’re powered by the bike with a built-in temperature controller that has 3 LED coded heat-level settings. Harley also has the one touch liners available, including glove liners, shirts, pants, & socks. However, in my experience, the mid layers work way better at keeping the body warm in the coldest temperatures.

To recap, my top tips for winter riding are making sure your tires are properly inflated, battery tender plugged in, blocking the direct wind and keeping all your body parts covered from the wind.

f you are any kind of car aficionado, then Saturday October 17, 2020 was your slice of heaven here on earth. The “Kicks on 66 Ultra Car Show and Cruise” was truly an event I hope the promoters carry on for many years. Like the major Woodward cruise in Detroit each summer, this is a scaled down version with vendors and home bases for cruisers and spectators to view and enjoy the wonderful Route 66 that passes thru Edwardsville and Glen Carbon, IL. To add to this great event was a memorial car show held at Sunset Hills Country Club Edwardsville, IL, in honor of longtime car enthusiast and community staple, Randy Gori, who tragically lost his life this past winter. Randy was very fond of Ferrari’s and exotics in which he owned many. Some of his friends throughout the area saw this event along with the Route 66 cruise as an opportunity to keep his love of exotic cars and community legacy alive. With over 300 invitation only cars parked along the beautiful manicured fairways at Sunset Hills and sunshine radiating, the color pallet was in full effect.

Several local automotive businesses were on hand to showcase their offerings of products they have. Bespoke Motors of St. Louis, MO, is a high-performance upgrade facility for your exotic or hot rod. Just give Chris or Paul a call and they will take care of all of your needs.

Gateway Bronco from Hamel, IL had a couple of early Broncos with serious power and suspension upgrades that will make any car lover gitty up. Lastly, Cauley Ferrari of Detroit made the journey down to let us all drool over the shear beauty of the newer models, not the two ladies at the info table!!!

There were so many examples of European exotics from all years, not one generation was left out. From an early 1957 restored 250 GT Ferrari race car that has been in the same family since 1971, to the high-end Ferrari 812 Superfast coupe. There was even a very rare Ferrari Daytona coupe on hand. Ferrari’s were well represented Page 26

with so many models and wonderful colors to choose from, all one could do is stare in awe.

Not to be out done, Lamborghini’s had their fair share of killer rides to wow the crowd.

From an early Diablo to the Aventador SVJ, Lambo’s have to have the best color options on this planet. The Sun made sure of that.

One cannot fathom just how amazing it was to see so many great cars like Aston-Martin, Audi, Maserati, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche all at the same venue for a great charity event. The public responded in an overwhelming support to this type show.

Not to be left out of the conversation of American exotics, there was a 2020 Ford GT and a mid 2000 GT, owned by the same individual. An early 60’s Ford GT 40 made famous by Carroll Shelby, which by the way, the “Ford vs. Ferrari” movie was based off of this car. There were several of the all new C8 Corvettes with their new mid-engine design and exterior crisp lines will rival any European offering.

Giving the event its flare at a golf course, like a miniature Pebble Beach feeling, were several Great Gatsby era big cars, a dual cowl phaeton Cunningham, Lincoln and a Packard. What is so cool about these three cars, they were all part of a wonderful car collection owned by the Abbott family of Jerseyville, IL years ago.

With so much variety to look at, American Muscle was not left out. From early 30’s hot rods to late model canyon carvers, one’s eyes could gaze for hours. Ford Mustang’s were well represented with some early Shelby’s to the late model Shelby GT500 Super Snake. GM had a plethora of models to check out including a ’62 Chevy Impala “409”, ’56 Chevy Sedan Delivery Custom, Camaro’s, Chevelle’s and a large contingent of Corvette’s.

This was an incredible event that provided everything that a participant and a spectator could ever want or dream of for a one-day show. Talking to other participants, we all agree, this should be an annual event.
