How’s

it going Full Throttle readers! Keigan here again. I

want to start out by thanking everyone who came out to the cold weather riding and winterizing your motorcycle seminar we had at the dealership. We had a great turnout, saw some new faces, and were able to give away some awesome door prizes to our lucky winners so thank you for those that came out to support that. Were going to be having a couple more seminars coming up this winter season so stay tuned for those dates and come out and join us for those.

For this article I’m going to keep it pretty simple and talk about the basics of oil. I’ve been in the industry for a short period of time now, about 3 years, and one of the most common questions we still get is, what kind of oil should I put in my bike and why. So, with the influx of new riders we’ve had in the dealership this year I figured I would go over the basics of oil and what the difference in regular oil and synthetic oil are. This one might not be cray exciting but there is going to be some good information, so hang with me and let’s get right into it.

We all know oil is needed in our motorcycles. But why is it needed? Because we said so? Of course, that’s one of the reasons but there are other major reasons that are just a little more important than me telling you to put oil in your bike. Oil not only lubricates the engine components, it also does 2 major things for your engine once it’s in your bike, it protects against shear and it protects against oil degradation. Shear is basically damage that happens from metal-on-metal contact.

Oil is made out of 3 base components, 75-80% base oil, up to 10% viscosity modifiers, and 5-10% additives. Now, what does all of that mean and what does all of that do for your motorcycle? Let’s start by explaining the base oil. Base oils are separated into five groups, numbered 1-5. The higher the group number the more impurities are removed from the oil. That means the oils in the higher group numbers are going to be more refined oils. Groups 1-3 are going to be your mineral oil-based oils. Harley Davidson 20W-50 is considered a group 2 oil. The second base oil is Synthetic. Synthetic is a higher rated oil with more impurities removed. Harley Davidson SYN3 is a group 4 oil.

The second part to the oil is the viscosity modifiers. What exactly are viscosity modifiers and what do they do? An easy way to remember it is to think of viscosity as the armor. The viscosity modifiers are what makes the oil versatile, improves the oils temperature range, and improves the oils protection capabilities. So, how can you tell what viscosity ranges your oil has? well its all in the numbers right on the front of the bottle. 20W-50 is a multigrade oil, the lower the numbers the thinner the oil is. 20W50 allows for easy starting and better cold flow and the W means its ideal for winter weather. Oil like SAE50 or SAE60 are single grade oil. These oils have larger numbers which means they are thicker oils which provide better film protection at higher temperatures.

The final 5-10% of oil is the additives. These additives offer the following benefits Anti-wear for protection, corrosion prevention, detergency for cleaning, lubricity as a friction reducer and anti-oxidation to offer sludge protection. All of these additives help keep your engine clean and in peak running condition.

OF OIL

Now that we’ve gone over what makes up Harley Davidson oil, lets talk about what oils Harley Davidson has and what oil is best for your bike and your riding needs. The first Harley Davidson oil is SAE20W-50. This is Harleys conventional mineral based oil. Its going to help keep your engine cooler, cleaner, free from sludge, varnish and corrosion. It is available is multigrade (SAE20W-50) and single grade (SAE50 –SAE60). SAE20W-50 is an oil that is a proven solution for engine ware and the rider that focuses more on day trips, shorter rides and isn’t typically exposed to high atmospheric temperatures and doesn’t carry a lot of weight on their motorcycle. SAE50 and SAE60 are thicker oils geared for the older Harley engines such as Shovelheads, Panheads, Knuckleheads, Flatheads and older Sportster models.

Next on the list is the Harley Davidson Synthetic Blend oil, or SYN3. Harley Davidson SYN3 is a 20W-50 synthetic base stock formula that was formulated to provide long-term protection and engine performance requirements. Harley Davidson SYN3 is perfect for the rider that has a high output engine, logs a lot of miles and rides in higher temperatures and demands the best performing parts. Harley also offers an extensive line of transmission and primary oil for your motorcycle as well. these are designed the same way as the engine oils are, with love and care from the motorcycle gods.

Formula+ (formula plus) is a mineral based stock formula transmission and primary chain case lubricant that is blended to provide lubricity for anti-wear and to maintain the coefficient of friction on the transmission gears and clutch operation. Formula+ is perfect for the rider who focuses on day trips, no exposure to excessive heat and don’t carry excess weight on the bike.

If you are a traveler you will want to use Heavy Synthetic Gear Oil in your Transmission and Primary. Heavy Synthetic Gear Oil is a multi-grade, heavy weight Synthetic oil with a weight of 80W-140. The heavy synthetic gear oil was formulated to provide lubrication for the anti-wear requirements of transmission gears across a wider temperature range than mineral based oil. This primary and transmission oil is going to be perfectly suited for the rider that frequently rides 2-up, usually rides in hotter temperatures, logs a lot of miles, and the riders that pull a trailer.

Well, I think I bored you guys long enough with this one. I think this is some good information for you all. Like I mentioned, we get this question multiple times a day so hopefully this will clear up some questions some of you all had or make picking the right oil a little easier for you the next time you’re doing an oil change. As always, I really appreciate you guys taking the time to read these articles. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at the dealership or by email at keigan@stcharlesharleydavidson.com. If you want to check out some of the builds we have going on in the shop, go ahead and stop by, we have a lot going on. Thanks again everyone and as always keep the rubber side down.

CRACK UP’S

Today I went to a barber’s shop for a shave. The barber asked me to put a small wooden ball in my mouth so he could get a closer shave around my cheeks.

I asked: “But what if I swallow the ball?”

He replied: “No problem sir, you just bring it back tomorrow like everybody else.” ___________________

I met an amazing man at a party on Saturday. Wonderful listener, great looking... I gave him my number and winked at him to call me when he gets home. It’s been 4 days, I’m really starting to worry the poor guy is homeless.

Mom, can I get a brother?

Sorry, darling. The stork doesn’t bring us babies anymore.

Well then perhaps you can talk to another bird? (Who said chivalry was dead) A couple is walking through the streets of Paris. It starts to rain heavily.

He: "Here, take my backpack, darling, and hold it above your head.”

She: “But what about you, my love?! I don't want you to get wet!”

-

He: "Ah, don't worry, petal. I have an umbrella."

user kiki357: AWESOME, NOW I DON’T HAVE TO KEEP PRESSING SHIFT!!!! _____________________

Welcome back once again Full Throttle readers and riders!! First things first get yer’ damn mind outta the gutter kids, we’re not talking about the northern parts of the female anatomy here. As nice as that would be, I’m here to chat about something that gets me just as riled as the lady bits do……

POWER! For some of us out there on two wheels the rush of simply riding is not enough. There are a select few of us that live life by the throttle, not satisfied till the needle is buried, we are those who wish to launch from the stop light like a bullet fired from the barrel of a gun. We are referred to as; crazy, speed demons, lunatics, gear heads, throttle junkies, whatever the label, I’ll take it!

Most of us reading this can agree there is nothing better than a solid punch from a V-twin air cooled motor as we leave from a dead stop! It’s an amazing rush that’s hard to describe. For those of us craving a little more from our Harley’s there are plenty of options out there to choose from. Simply changing the Air cleaner, exhaust, and adding the appropriate fuel management or jetting is a great way to add some much wanted power. This is generally referred to as a stage one. Then from there we have options like cams, heads, a bump in displacement, as well as all sorts of fine tuning that can be done to squeeze a bit more power from our beastly Harley’s. But as technology advances and times change, what really is the future of speed?

When building a motor these days there are two schools of thought. The old school belief is as old as the motors themselves, “there is no replacement for displacement” on a naturally aspirated motor. These folks most likely owned a muscle car back in the day and loved the fact that, yes their car was fast, guzzled gas, got all the chics, was loud and obnoxious, and in the end spent more time in the driveway being fixed due to “non-stock applications”. Some of us have pushed the limits until it just became too much. Bigger pistons, a lumpy cam, head work and larger intakes all put added stress on the components of our V-twin air cooled motors. In the end big power can be gained with the careful application and proper tuning of displacement, cams, heads and any other performance upgrades working as one to produce the best power with your combination whatever that might be.

Harley has many kits available to suit your displacement needs! Like the new 110” BOLT ON kit that allows all 2007 and later models to get the big displacement they have always wanted. But if you want to achieve numbers that will eat a CVO 110” for lunch? Come on in and check out the 110” “tire Shredder” kit! Maybe building a designer motor to your personal specs is more your style? St Charles Harley-Davidson can help you with

www.FullThroTTle-Magazine.coM Page 22 Page 22 www.FullThroTTle-Magazine.coM

vs bolt on

that no problem! Our parts and service experts here are backed by an amazing team of skilled technicians! So if its simple displacement you want? Yeah we can do that!

Now let’s chat some new school applications. These days a different way of thinking has come about. This camp is comprised of younger faces who most likely use apple computers to desk tops, have the coolest and latest gadgets and have most likely seen Fast and the Furious a few times. We are seeing this movement in the automotive world become very common place. A movement that was considered so taboo 20 years ago. Enter the turbo charger! Most folks believe this is such a new idea or that turbo chargers only belong at the race track but we are seeing the main stream auto makers like Ford and Chevy embracing this technology as every day tech and it was only a matter of time before the crossover would make its way to the Harley world.

One of the industry leaders in turbos right now is Trask Industry’s. Their product is amazing and looks sharp! How’s a turbo work you ask? Most folks believe this involves magic spells, unicorn droppings and Harry Potter’s wand to get one to work but really it’s very simple. The exhaust gasses enter the turbocharger that spins the compressor in the turbo that builds boost for the system. The exhaust gasses that were used to spin the compressor creates the compressed air a.k.a “boost” exits the turbo into the header connected to the rest of your exhaust. The compressed air travels from the turbo to the intercooler itself (which cools the air as it is recycling exhaust heat) and then travels through another section of piping right into the intake manifold of the engine completing the loop. When the throttle body is open the compressed air flows into the motor yet when you shut the throttle body the BOV (blow off valve) releases the built up air pressure to prevent the air from back flowing into the turbo and this is how turbo flutter is born! So there it’s simple! And If that was hard to understand just Ill dumb it down…. “How do turbos work agian?” My simple answer? “Science!!” Should you have any questions about performance upgrades from mild to wild contact us at the shop at 636-946-6487!! Thanks for stopping by and y’all enjoy the ride!

ChatChiC ‘Twas The Night Biker Chic’s Saved Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas;

To all women and their bikes, Wearing leather and chaps getting ready for the night. Taking their bikes out for a crisp Christmas Roll; Watching all the lights twinkling On the houses of old.

I on my trike and my gal pals on their rides; Cruising down the road as smooth as they will Glide. Harleys, Indians, Bobbers and Choppers;

With full tanks of gas, avoiding Christmas shoppers.

As we traveled on our journey, we heard a loud rumble; We turned to found Santa all in a Crumble. Laying in the ditch with the presents all scatters; We ran up to Santa to see what was the matter.

“I hit a patch of ice and wrecked my sled; I even tore my leather suit of red.

I have all these gifts of biker gear and chrome, And now have no way to deliver them to homes!”

We put our heads together to see what we could do; Looking at our bikes I came up with a clue.

“Santa, I have a nice trike all ready to ride; you can put your gifts in the trunk and away you’ll fly.”

“It has an engine built for speed to make up for lost time; just hit it Full Throttle and into the sky your’ll climb.”

As he revved that V-Twin and blew smoke from the pipes, flames shot from the back as he rode into the night.

As Santa burned out in the brisk winter wind; I yelled up to him, “Have my bike back before the night’s end!”

He turned and snickered with a boastful laugh, “I’ll have it back without a scratch.”

As I woke the next morning, I went to my shed, And to my amazement, my Trike was back and decked out In red!

Santa brightened it up with a shiny new coat of paint, Lots and lots of chromed; I began to feel faint.

I went in to the house to get some cold water, And there I saw under the tree was all this leather. Jackets, chaps, gloves, vests and more;

“I never expected all these things that I adore.”

As you can see, helping other through their time of need; Proves to bless you by doing good deeds.

So Let your Holiday season be filled with warmth and delight; Merry Christmas to all; ride safe and good night.
