First, we have Stephen Scrafford, the Parts Manager. Stephen has been in the industry for almost ten years now, all of which he has worked with the owner of Doc’s Harley-Davidson, Beth Ernst. Stephen has always had a thirst for knowledge, which is what originally got him into the parts side of Harley-Davidson. Starting in shipping and receiving, he quickly worked his way up to the parts counter, eager to learn everything he could. Stephen worked the parts counter four days a week and worked as the parts to service liaison one day of the week, which is where he really started gaining the parts knowledge that he has acquired today. The parts to service liaison oversees gathering the parts that the Service Technicians need to complete any job that comes through the service department. Eventually Stephen was working the parts counter all the time. From there Stephen opened dealerships as the parts manager which is how we were lucky enough to have him come here to Doc’s. We also have Rob Duncan. Rob has been in the industry for a staggering twenty-two years. Of those twenty-two years, he has spent fifteen of them at Doc’s. Rob has quite a bit of experience in multiple areas in the industry. He has been in parts for a long time. He also has been the Service Manager and even the Motorclothes Manager. He has accumulated a vast amount of knowledge that comes with experience. Rob started riding at the age of thirteen, so he has been riding for almost thirty-seven years now. Currently, He owns a Buell XB12. Rob is also our in-house comedian, so you can be sure that you’ll leave with a smile after hearing Rob tell his jokes. CONTINUE ON PAGE 5

We are finally approaching spring and I couldn’t be any happier. The weather should start to bring us more warm days and all of our bikes can begin to get back on the road on a regular basis. There has been a few good days to slip a ride in here and there but overall a cold winter in my opinion. The bike nights for this season are starting to get organized and we wanted to update you on a few of them. Every Wednesday night starting on April 4th the fun will resume at Bobby’s Place in Valley Park with “Historic Route 66 Bike Night”. This has proven to be the most popular weekly bike night in the Lou. One Eyed Willies will be back on the 3rd Thursday of every month starting on April 19th with their Bike Night. As always it’s a great time at One Eyed Willies. Mike and his band of beautiful girls make the night a fun one every time. Of course the Bike Night’s would not be complete with Big St Charles Bike Night the first Thursday of each month beginning on April 5th. This event features their annual “Calendar Girl Contest”, free food, drink specials and lots of fun. These are the three best bike nights that happen in the St Louis area so be sure to mark your calendars and ride out and spend time with friends and enjoy a great evening. The biking season wouldn’t be complete without our friend Quincy firing up the Hawg Pit BBQ in Grafton. Quincy and the staff are hard at work getting everything set to open on the weekend starting April 6th and every weekend thereafter. The Hawg Pit is proud to announce that they won the 2017 Best Biker Bar award for the Illinois area. That didn’t surprise us. We’ve said that for years. “Thanks Quincy for giving us bikers a great place to eat, drink, hangout and have an awesome time.” If you haven’t been to Hawg Pit BBQ you have to make that a must do this riding season. Be sure to keep up with all the events going on this season by watching our Crusin’ Calendar in the magazine and on our website. Another great place to find events is on our Facebook page. Next, we have Roger Rolen, who has been in the industry for over twelve years now! Every single one of those years has been in the Parts Department- he was actually the Parts Manager at a local dealership for over five years. Roger has copious amounts of knowledge that we all love tapping into. He has been riding HarleyDavidson’s for 34 years now and has always done his own customization and maintenance. Harley is definitely a way of life for Roger and we’re glad to have him as a part of our family here at Doc’s HarleyDavidson. Then we have Mike Rudolph. Mike has been in the industry for over 5 years now and has developed a real passion for Harley-Davidson. Mike started his career at MMI in Phoenix, Arizona where he graduated in 2013. Mike actually has three certifications from MMI: he has technical certifications from BMW, Ducati, and HarleyDavidson. Mike graduated at the top of his class at MMI. With that schooling, Mike went on to be a technician. He was a Harley technician for over three years, a service writer for one year, and he has been a Customization Specialist ever since he joined the Doc’s Harley-Davidson family last year. Needless to say, Mike has the knowledge and know-how from varying aspects of the industry. And Finally, there is me, Brendan Talley. I have been riding for close to five years now. I was lucky enough to start working at Doc’s Harley-Davidson three years ago, when I was hired on as a Porter. From there, I moved up to Tech Support, then to Driver, and now I have ended up in Parts, which was actually my goal. I have been in the parts department for almost a year now! I love working in Parts as I get to help you customize your motorcycles! I find that every day someone is coming in wanting to do something new to their motorcycle and I’m always eager to help them do so. The people I work with have helped me tremendously by helping me get where I am today at Doc’s HarleyDavidson. It’s all thanks to them that I gained the knowledge I have today. The Risk of NOT

“Never fear a motorcycle, but always respect it,” said my dad to an adolescent me. With a firm tone and extended index finger he coached me as I sat stiff-armed with my hands on the bars and unblinking wide eyes locked on him. [Edit Note: This piece was originally written for a non-motorcycle magazine. Their editor asked for a story explaining why we ride motorcycles, despite the risks. We decided to share it with you, unchanged from the first edit. Share it with a friend who doesn’t like motorcycles or think they’re too dangerous.] Fear should never be confused with respect. He shouted a few more instructions and then shoved me as I released the clutch, sending me off with one big slap on the back. Fearing a motorcycle can get you hurt, but respecting one can make you feel more alive than a car ever can. My father lost his brother to a motorcycle accident when he was 23 and two of his father’s friends had already became amputees. So, why was he teaching his only son how to ride such a dangerous thing, encouraging young love that today is full grown? I can’t answer that, but I’m thankful he did. Motorcycle Risks Many of you four-wheel suburbanites think riding a motorcycle is this dangerous, careless action--that’s an irrational fear. People are still scared of flying despite the fact that you have a better chance of dying in the car on the way to the airport than in a plane, why? Because, if you breakdown on a plane you can’t just pull over to the curb and wait for AAA. Similar to how a fender-bender in a car would equate to a lifethreatening accident to me on a motorcycle. Yes, the statistics say there are more motorcycle than car deaths, but that’s not a fair estimate of the risks. To quote a bad movie, Biker Boyz, when the young hot shot makes a bold attempt at a stunt, the experienced rider, played by Laurence Fishburne, tells him he could have been hurt, his response, “Could’ve got hurt getting out of bed.” So, does it stop us from getting out of bed? As a man I respect and former boss, David Freiburger, once wrote, “Since Sonny Bono died skiing into a tree, should we stop all skiing or should we cut down all the trees? No. The passions of the many outweigh the losses of a few.” Risks Unfortunately media portrays our niche group as an evil, dangerous lifestyle, catering to those fearmongers who attend a NASCAR race just to watch a wreck. The general media muckrakes the scary side of motorcycles in an effort for ratings. Skewed statistics and media paint a scary picture of motorcyclists and blur the actual risks involved. Motorcycle death and accident statistics don’t show inexperience or careless action. According to 2008 CDC statistics, almost a third of rider deaths involved drinking. Riding a motorcycle makes you alert and uses all of you. You feel the elements, shift your body to steer, your eyes scan the road ahead, and all of your limbs are used for controls. You can’t put it on cruise and lean the seat back, riding takes all of your attention. So, even a couple drinks can really impair your riding.

Riding A Motorcycle Another large portion of deaths came from riders without helmets, as not all states require them by law. No gear, no respect (for the motorcycle). Cars A car is an extension of your house, your office, your life, but a motorcycle is an extension of you. You trade your risks on a motorcycle. Every day you risk being late, getting lost, spending too much on gas and going insane--I don’t experience those problems. When I leave to ride, unless I’m commuting to work, I only have a vague idea of where I’m going. No GPS or smart-phone directions, because if I get lost, great. I’m on a motorcycle, my day can’t be bad. It’s a mental release that for many is vital to survival. I don’t stress about traffic or directions when I’m riding. It’s a personal experience that has sometimes become a spiritual experience. Even in a pack of other motorcycles or a crowded highway, I ride alone. Getting in a car is like waiting, not living. Sit in traffic, go to point B with the windows up and A/C on listening to a boring talk-show host and stress about the day. Getting on a motorcycle tears away the modern world, no music, skip traffic, alert, riding away from your thoughts and stresses with the twist of the throttle. Friends Most of my friends ride, which means we always have something to talk about. Subsets and cliques of bikers seem intimidating, but some of the nicest people in the world are bikers, because you can’t be all that mad if you’re on a bike. Like the old cheesy bumper sticker, ‘you never see a Harley in front of a psychiatrist’s office.’ And remember, you meet the nicest people on a Honda (that was Honda’s ad campaign when outlaw bikers grabbed media attention in the late ‘60s). I wave at other bikers no matter what type of bike they ride. It’s nice to have a sense of identity even within a large group, but I ride the bikes I like to ride, because that’s what I do. Not because I wish to fit into a particular subset, but because that’s the bike I want. At the same time, it’s comforting to know that you’re not alone in your deranged obsession with everything two wheeled. Close Calls I’ve had many close calls on a motorcycle. Sliding the curb at 50 mph shooting sparks onto my friend behind me. Laid down a handful of dirt bikes and nearly missed a couple cars on the road. I ride every day I can and find excuses to go get lost on a bike. I believe you have a better chance of avoiding an accident on a motorcycle rather than a car and I’ve had far more accidents in cars than motorcycles. For a goal oriented person, riding is constantly a challenge. Every time I leave my house I learn something new and push myself harder. Not necessarily faster, but better. Every day it brings something out of me that nothing else can. Fearing a motorcycle or not respecting one can get you hurt. No helmet, drinking and careless behavior loses your respect for a bike, but riding sensibly and smart can keep you alive, better than anything on four wheels. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

elcome back Full Throttle readers and riders! Hopefully these temps will warm up so we can get them kickstands back up! With Spring right around the corner we are looking forward to more time in the saddle and less time in the cage surrounded by warning systems, crumple zones, ABS, and airbags. This is the time of year we tend to forget just how vulnerable we are out there on the scoot. In the early riding season cars aren’t used to seeing us just yet and this can cause issues. We as riders take tons of precautions with the bike to make sure it’s safe to ride but the question is what are you doing for yourself? As we always say “Don’t dress for the ride, dress for the slide”, now I can admit I don’t always practice what I preach but even I have made some changes over the years. I decided a few years back to switch from a skid lid to a full faced Shoei DOT helmet. On the other hand I do agree that the helmet law should be left up to the rider and not the law. But if you are making the choice to wear a DOT lid be sure that you are doing it right. First off always have a professional fit you; this is very important as each manufacture have different fits, sizes and styles. One brand may fit you better than another or may have better options to make the helmet you want fit you with replaceable cheek pads. A helmet does in fact carry an “expiration date”. Most folks don’t know this but your average shelf life is roughly three to five years. This is due to the fact that the protective technology that keeps your melon safe begins to deteriorate. So make sure you are replacing your helmet over time, also if the helmet has taken a nasty hit with or without your brain in it, retire the lid. Helmets are in fact one time use applications. Now that the head is covered let’s talk about some other important bits. I myself ride with gloves full time, not just when it’s cold. This not only protects the hands in an “event” it will also protect your hands from road debris. Leather is your best option but there are plenty of vented gloves that also protect just as well. There are literally 1000s of options when it comes to Page 16

Boots are always your best choice to cover your feet but if not boots at least wear an over the ankle shoe. Many companies these days such as Icon, SIDI, Fly and Speed and Strength all offer fashionable shoe options that have a steel shank in the heel and foot to protect your little piggies all while making sure you look good doing so! And for the love of god please don’t ever wear sandals, they are for the beach not the streets. Covering the legs is also very important, shorts should never be an attire choice unless being a squid is cool to you! Jeans should always be your first option. There are some of us that wear leather chaps year round but there are also great products in the textile line as well. The textile gear appeals to those who don’t prefer the leather look but still seek the protection. Hell you can even by Kevlar infused jeans from companies like Icon and Tobacco Motor Wear Co. that are road rash proof and stylish.

In this day and age of multiple distractions, devices, in dash navigation, spilling of ones Triple-Venti-Half Sweet-Non-Fatdouble steamed-Gluten free-Caramel Macchiato and crying back seat babies, do you think you and your bike are the first thing in a drivers mind? Protect yourself from those dangers, or don’t. In the end it’s all personal decision. And speaking about personal decision we know that most all of these products can in fact be purchased on the ole interwebs but remember this, our team is here to help you get fully fitted for and educated on whatever product you may need. ow’s it going Full Throttle readers, Zach White here to give you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. Seminar season is coming to an end and the nicer weather is teasing us. With daylight savings coming it will hopefully bring the nice weather along with it. This winter has been full of education and seeing what’s available for the 2018 riding season. From Harley-Davidson to the many Aftermarket manufactures getting new ideas out for the all new 2018 Softail family. If you made it down to the STL Motorcycle Show in January you would of seen this bike being built in front of your eyes by one of our Master Technician, Mike Bellamy. We couldn’t wait to start a new build on a 2018 HarleyDavidson Softail and decided on the all new Fatbob. The inspiration behind this build came from a bike that was seen at the Drag Specialties dealer ride late last year. Arlen Ness, which all of you know for the many years of custom bikes and parts for the V-Twin world. They had a 2018 Softail Fatbob that just stood out from anyone we have seen yet. So we went with that idea and made it into our own St. Charles Harley-Davidson Custom. Let’s get down to some of the changes we have done to our first of many new Softail builds. The Bonneville Salt Denim was the color we went with so we could really pull all the contrast in with the paint and give it that real stealth with an attitude look. The real eye catcher on this machine isn’t the paint but the wheels! This bike is rolling on matching Arlen Ness black contrast ProCross 18” x 5.5” front and rear wheels. The factory is 16” x 5.5” rear and 16” x 3.5” front. That’s how the name of this bike went from just a Fatbob to a “Fatter Fatbob”! With the matching floating front and rear wheels and the amazing grip and handling of the Pirelli Night Dragon tires it makes the best of everything on one bike! When it came to cleaning up the middle part of the bike and really making it growl we Page 24

decided to illuminate the stock exhaust and go with a lower up sweep 2 into 1. We all know the performance comes from a 2 into 1 and with the looks of this bike we didn’t want anything but some of the best. So with that in mind we went with the Bassini Road Rage exhaust that gives you both looks and performance. We also wanted to get away from the bulky stock air cleaner so we went with the all new Screamin’ Eagle round Extreme-Flow and topped it off with the Ratchet cover. This change really cleaned up the bike and gave it what most of us want. Loud pipes that will save our life’s! This bike really stands out and makes you want to jump on it and hit that corner or pull up and know everyone is going to be coming over to check it out. As the weather warms up make sure to check your tire pressure and fluids to make sure you are ready for the open road and the 2018 riding season. Next month will kick off our first Thursday of the month bike nights and you all know how it will be. Bigger and better then previous years! MYND BLOWN

Whether you are a guy or a gal, It’s not always an easy being “PC” when you are all about cars. It is even more difficult if you are also a builder, but at the same time it is very rewarding.

Let’s say you are out with friends; a small group or a large group, it really doesn’t matter. And you find yourself hearing a lot of WORDS from all around and you smile and nod your head from time to time, then all of a sudden you hear Gasser or any other car term and your ears perk up and you are drawn into the best conversation ever. Even if you have never met this person before you will be great friends before you walk away. Facebook is kind of the same thing now, you see all of these post and you just keep scrolling especially if it is political but all of a sudden you see a basket case or a bad ass car in all of its glory and now you must have this person as a friend. Now that I told you what is probably not a secret about me at parties I can tell you this is how I met a great Car Guy. Tony Eden, is the proud owner this “Mynd” Blowing Gasser. It is a 1955 Chevrolet 2 door sedan that Tony built in his spare time in which was extremely lacking. He owns Tony’s Hot Rod’s where he also builds other lucky customers dreams. I’ve seen some of his builds and they are top notch, he doesn’t just make them shine, he is a true craftsman. So when it comes time to build a car for yourself it is a very difficult decision. By the time you are done with one car you, love it and want one for yourself. But in the back of your mind you keep going back to your favorite car and you must have it. After years of gathering and building parts, this Gasser really came together with the best of the best and he tried very hard to be Period Correct with his build. Tony has owned this car for 12 years and that is the same amount of time it took him to build it. But very recently I saw pictures of the car out of his shop and I’m sure he feels the same way that I do, all of the time and the hard work was well worth it. From ever angle this Gasser is a work of art, whether it be the mechanical or the body and paint, you have so much to look at.

A lot of people today may not know what it is but a car like this it has to have a Rock Crusher in it. A Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher to be exact, a bad ass 4 speed transmission. To put this transmission to good use you have to have an engine worthy of it. I think he has that too, a 468 cu.in. estimated 1000 horse power with help from the Littlefield 871 blower. The Brodie heads and the Lunati roller cam with 750 lift and 2 Holley 1050 Dominator carbs are all music to my ears coming out of the wide open fender well headers. With all of this power it has to make it to the pavement. To help do this Tony made some true ladder bars to help keep the 9” Ford Strange equipped Pro nodular 4:11 with Locker and 35 spline axles from twisting because the 31-14X15 M&H slicks are not going to just spin. And the 15X4 and 15X12 American Eagle wheels look great too. To have a Gasser you must have a straight axle so Tony had to modify the factory frame to accept all of the power and the weight transfers. These cars were known for weight transfer and Wheelies, when that much weight was coming back down the front end it better be able to handle it. The interior has all of the needed weight savings and safety equipment too, like the ’67 Chevelle bucket seats and the 10 point roll cage. For comfort and style it has hand sewn Roll & Pleated upholstery, the garnish moldings have been chromed and the top of the dash is in silver metal flake paint. To monitor what’s going on he has original SUN gauges with a “Big Daddy” Don Garlits tach. He even has an original Superior wood steering wheel and a VEGA cross steering box. The body had to have other modifications but the biggest one is the rear wheel openings. Tony told me the secret of how he did them, but let’s just say he “radiused” them to fit the large M&H slicks. When it was time for the color selection it had to be Hugger Orange with a twist. Tony chose to add an interesting element to the paint scheme. He took the Hugger Orange but the added gold candy over the silver flake; with the panel painting and the fine line design is definitely worth the time to check it out. Be careful in the sun, it is blinding. Next time you are out at a car cruise or show and you see a Bad Ass bright orange gasser, prepare yourself; you might just get your “Mynd Blown” www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com
