he Great River Road Harley Davidson, formally known as TNT Harley-Davidson, has always been a great destination place to ride. When the new owners, Larry and Barb Ernst, took over they wanted to make sure that when you arrive at their dealership, you feel like you have arrived at an old friends home; warm and welcoming. You probably are thinking that the name “Ernst” sounds awfully familiar. Well, it should, Larry Ernst is the brother of Greg Ernst who is the co-owner of Doc’s H-D here is our lovely home town and the co-owner of Lone Wolf H-D in Spokane Washington. I had the opportunity to chat with Larry about how he got involved with Harley-Davidson. His story is quite interesting and not what you would have expected. Larry graduated from MIZZOU with an undergrad degree and went on to become an Optometrist working his own practice for twenty years in Warrenton, MO. He has always had a fascination for motorcycles but never pursued that passion until 2003 where he purchased a 100th Anniversary Harley Wide Glide. He was hooked! Motorcycles and riding became more and more of a passion. So much so, he really began taking stock and re-evaluating his career. Not really liking the direction the insurance companies were going and forcing him to reduce his appointment times, he decided to sell his practice. This gave Larry the opportunity to pursue his ever growing passion of Motorcycles. Larry and his wife made the decision that they wanted to own their own Harley-Davidson dealership. They wanted to be in a business where they brought fun to peoples lives. They wanted to experience first hand the look on someone’s face as they purchased their brand new Harley. Having visited his brother in Spokane on several occasions, they got to see what a great company Harley-Davidson was to work for. So, their first step was to know all the ins and outs of how a dealership Page 24

was run. His brother Greg, had him move his family up to Spokane to become the General Manager and have Barb run the Motorclothes. Over the course of a year, the two of them helped run Lone Wolf H-D and established a relationship with Harley.
Not only were they wanting to own their own dealership, they were also hoping that they would be able to move back to the Mid-West. Well, their wishes came true. About a year or so ago, they got word that TNT Harley, in Quincy, IL, was becoming available. They jumped at the opportunity and negotiations began. They closed on the deal in July of 2015 and The Great River Road H-D was born. Larry and Barb are making sure that this is a family owned and operated business. They have two children, Henry and Katie. Henry is their marketing expert and Katie works in the Motorclothes department. Heck, you might even see a pet or two running around. All of them work very hard to make sure that everyone who comes in is greeted with a warm smile. Larry is always there extending his hand with a welcoming handshake and light conversation. Each and every person is like family to them. When Larry and I were talking, we spoke about how many great routes there are to get to their dealerships. My personal favorite is riding up highway 79. That takes you right along the Mississippi; passing through Clarksville and then through Louisiana and from there you’ll cut over Hwy 100 into Illinois and run up Route 96. Or maybe you’ll like the Hwy 61 route all the way up through Hannibal. What ever route you choose, you can’t go wrong. It’s all about getting on your bike and riding. Safety Tips For New T
oday, Motorcycles are once again, becoming more and more popular. Along with their popularity, it’s natural for there to be new inexperienced riders. Full Throttle magazine thought it would be good to give new riders a few safety tips that could be very helpful. We all know is that getting on a motorcycle for your first time can be pretty scary and very intimidating. The very first thing that I always suggest to a new rider is to attend a motorcycle training course and a motorcycle safety course. Even if your state doesn’t require you to take a motorcycle training or safety course, you should. These classes will teach you about the traffic safety laws that apply to motorcycles in your state, how to respond to emergency situations on a motorcycle, and give you a chance to try out your new skills in a controlled environment. The instructors will also give you tips about motorcycle maintenance, and how to avoid unsafe situations. Taking a motorcycle training and safety course prepares you to hit the road and to do it with much more confidence. Also, in a lot of states, after you take the training and safety course, they give you a certificate that you can take to your local DMV to get your motorcycle license without taking drivers course test. Once you have your motorcycle license, you will be ready to purchase your bike. First things first, you want to make sure that you’re getting on a bike that you can handle. Then, it’s always very helpful to get a bike that has an anti-lock braking system and traction control. Those are two very important features for a new motorcycle rider. In reality these components are important features for any motorcycle rider. The motorcycle anti-lock braking system, or ABS, prevents the wheels from locking during braking situations. Based on information from the wheel speed sensors, the ABS unit adjusts the pressure of the brake fluid in order to keep traction and help avoid fall downs. Motorcycle ABS helps the rider to maintain stability during breaking, and to decrease the stopping distance. It helps provide better traction, even on low friction surfaces. National and international organizations evaluate ABS as an important factor to increase safety and reduce motorcycle accident numbers. Another important factor to increase motorcycle safety is traction control, which is a newer feature for motorcyclist. Traction Control systems limit rear-wheel slippage during acceleration on low-traction road surfaces and also during hard acceleration. The Traction Control system performs this function by constantly monitoring the speeds of the front and rear wheels via the wheel speed sensors incorporated into the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). The system also factors in data from various engine parameters, plus throttle position. A potential loss of traction is calculated when the rear wheel begins to rotate significantly faster than the front. When the speed variance between the front and rear wheels grows large enough to indicate an imminent loss of traction, the system regulates torque application automatically by reducing fuel delivery to the engine. This ensures a seamless, unobtrusive modulation of power delivery in low-traction circumstances. The correct gear is also very important when riding a motorcycle. We’ve all seen the people that wear shorts and flip flops on a motorcycle, right? Those people are definitely not being safe. When on a

motorcycle you are sitting directly on top of the engine and exhaust system which get very hot very fast. Motorcycles offer very little protection in an accident situation; what a rider wears plays a huge part in protecting themselves. There is a reason you see a lot of bikers wearing leather gear. It is strong enough to protect your skin against the road surfaces. Plus, there are many other hazards that motorcycle riders are exposed too, like rocks, bugs, cigarette butts and much more. At 60 MPH getting hit by even a small rock or bug doesn’t feel very good. Of course now today, it’s not all about leather anymore. There are many different companies out there that make motorcycle gear out of other sturdy materials that can keep you cooler in hot temperatures, and warmer in cool temperatures, and still protect your body. Most of this new gear is made up of a lightweight, Breathable material, such as Kevlar, but have very heavy duty armor panels in key places like along your spine, down your torso, and on your shoulders and elbows. The correct shoes can also be very important to a rider. To shift gears on most motorcycle’s you lift up with your toes. So open toed shoes can become painful very fast. The shoes you wear will be the only protection your feet have while riding. So I suggest you look for something with a rugged sole, something with good ankle support, and of course something that will be both comfortable and durable. You always want to avoid distractions when riding. We all know distracted driving is a bad idea, it’s even worse when you’re riding a motorcycle. You always want to stay aware of your surroundings; understand that motorcycles are a lot harder to see than a car, especially the people that are driving large trucks and SUV’s. Just because you see a vehicle, doesn’t mean that they see you. So, always be prepared to react to any situations that gets put in front of you. For me one of the most important things you can do to stay safe when riding is wear a helmet, not just any helmet, the RIGHT kind of helmet. Helmets are the only thing that protects your head when riding. But you definitely don’t want just any helmet. You need to look for a helmet that has been approved by the department of transportation. It will have a sticker or a tag on it that says DOT approved. Those helmets have been tested and approved to be effective by the department of transportation. You also always want to make sure your helmet fits you properly. It can’t be too tight, or too loose, and should not obstruct your vision at all. It also should cover most of your head. There are many different types of helmets that are DOT approved, you just have to find the one that fits you and is comfortable. Riding a motorcycle is a skill, and like all skills it is something that you need to develop. You may be fine to take a little cruise on your motorcycle around the town, but it takes time to develop the skills to consider yourself an expert rider. To stay safe, you always want to ride within your skill set. It doesn’t make you cool because you can ride fast, or weave in and out of traffic, or do a wheelie. You need to take plenty of time to build your riding skills and only ride in situations where you know your skills are up to the job. If you want to challenge yourself, which is a good way to grow your skills, you need to do it in a safe controlled way. Many motorcycle dealers offer advanced riding courses where you can practice much more advanced maneuvers. So remember always have the right gear for you, the right motorcycle for you, and always ride safe and have fun. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

ow’s it going Full Throttle readers, Zach White here to give you the latest and greatest info from St. Charles Harley-Davidson. Hope you enjoy this article and looking forward too many more to come all year long! The weather is in our favor and bike nights here are going strong. If you haven’t made it to one yet, don’t miss out. The first Thursday of every month from 6pm-9pm with a new theme at each one. This month I want to feature a very special bike to me, my own! I started out riding a sportster like most do and then I got my Street Glide in April of 2011. I’ve had big dreams for it since. I knew that I didn’t want to rush into it, so I started collecting parts. Now after a decade in the industry and a wife saying you need to do something with all these parts in the basement, it was time to make my dream bike a reality. With the excitement boiling in my blood I went to one of our Master Technicians here at St. Charles Harley-Davidson, Kyle Brooks, and told him my ideas and was ready to put the bike under the “Wrench”!!
Me being a Grateful Dead fan, that was the air brush work I wanted done and WOW!!! I put together some pictures and let Darren from Liquid Illusions use his skills to make it come to life. When I got it all back and on the bike I was in shock this paint was on my Street Glide! Another one off item, that was made by Keith at Hawghardware, is my derby cover. These are the first two things I did and was the start of what has become my dream bike. The last Grateful Dead item that went on my bike came off my sportster, the air cleaner cover! I knew I wanted to do a 21” front wheel on my bike but never could decide on what style, until the softail breakout came out and the first time I saw this bike I knew that was the wheel. After getting my fork sliders shaved and the right caliper mount removed it was mock up time before sending it off for powder coating. After all my powder coated parts came back, it was time to install all the new parts and complete the bike. I had apes on my sportster and knew Page 34

how comfortable they were so 14” Paul Yaffe monkey bars it was. Not only do they look good, it puts my arms in the perfect riding position. I also wanted a good looking low profile seat so I went with the Danny Gray Airhawk Bigseat with matching passenger pillion. This seat brought me down about a 1/4” and back about the same distance. Now for performance in three different ways, Suspension, power and sound. I wanted to have the best ride possible so we installed Legend Suspensions Axeo High-Performance 1” lower front suspension, that has an inverted design with dual cartridges and can hit a corner with ease and not dive at all! To complete the ride, we installed Legend Suspensions Revo-A adjustable 12” coil rear suspension. I’ve never road a bike that handles as good as this set up. To help with the twist of the throttle we installed a stage 1. I’ve always been a big fan of the deep rumble and great power from Cobra’s Powerport Headpipes along with 4.5” Race-Pro slip-on mufflers so that was an easy choice for what exhaust I was going with. After the fuel management system and high flow air cleaner was installed, it gave me that extra power to get up and go as well as cooling my motor down a lot! Last, the performance upgrade for my radio and trying to get the best sound. I went with Boom! Audio fairing speakers with built in tweeters. For the rear I went with Hogtunes 6” x 9” 200 watt saddlebag speakers. Now to power these speakers, inside the fairing was a Hogtunes 200 watt amplifier. The list goes on and on with all the items powder coated and other the small items as well. So come up to the shop and check it out in person and let me know what you think. The King Of The Road Welcome back Full Throttle readers and riders! Well this year’s riding season just can’t
seem to make up its mind as to whether it would like to grace us with its presence or not? One days it’s amazing, the next is rainy and cold, sweet ole mother nature is just being rude at this point! I’m ready for some constant daily riding in my life!
As you all know I normally reserve this article for product knowledge and info but today I’d like to address some articles I’ve been seeing both online and in the media. Articles such as “Harley no longer king of the road, company in trouble” and Wall Street Journal’s article “Harley-Davidson tries to rejuvenate sales”. Many folks have seen them on Facebook and other sites as well as print ads, and there may be a slim bit of truth to it but let’s remember some things. When Harley was shipping 80,000 units in the first quarter of 2005 they fell prey to the same economy two years later that the housing industry fell to. Over suppling with not enough demand; fast forward a decade and we are back to shipping roughly 30,000 to 35,000 in the first quarter. Now, yes this is a huge difference but it’s now back to more of a supply and demand ideology. If there are not enough Harley riders for every saddle then what’s the point of producing more than needed? So the Motor Company, I believe, has made a smart decision to reduce production. Also, let’s talk about some of the new American made brands out on the market now that have taken some effect on the industry. The Indian line has hit the ground running but, with its very distinctive classic styling, it really is a niche market bike at this time. I mean unless you are looking at a RoadKing, Heritage, or Fat Boy the Indian line in comparison may not appeal to everyone. I mean if I was shopping for a StreetGlide or RoadGlide an Indian Chieftain to me wouldn’t really be a “conversion” type sale. Meaning if I was shopping, I wouldn’t put the Chieftain in that same “fairinged bike” category. They do come equipped with The 111 inch “Tri-cam” ThunderStroke motor which boasts a bit more power than Harley but lacks the “V-Twin” feel, again just my opinion. Not to mention the lack of accessories and aftermarket options. What might be felt most recently is the intro of the new Scout in two different models. They deliver more power than the Sporty and Street comparisons but again lack the feel of an American made model. And I won’t lie to my readers, the Street 750 or 500 aren’t the most exciting things either but Harley is trying to close that gap. Victory has been around for a while and held on by a thread in my opinion, as I haven’t ever really been a fan of the line. There are a few like the ”High Ball and Eight Ball and Gunner that I find attractive but plastic parts just don’t scream American made to me. I do have to say that the New Octane, the Indian Scouts edgy and more aggressive step brother is pretty impressive. Sexy lines with surprising horse power right out the gate. With there being so many other options out that are not American made, between cruisers, sport bikes, dual sports, Can-Ams, Slingshots and who knows what else they make these days, Harley-Davidson Motor company still owns over half of the sales in the United States of America. Just over fifty percent of the bikes on the road are good old American made Iron. Now last time I checked if a shareholder owns more than fifty-one percent of a business that person is considered to maintain the “ownership” of said business. So in my opinion the Motor Company is still on top and still king of the road. Here at St Charles Harley we aren’t feeling any of what the articles have printed, and with all the media doom and gloom being reported these days that’s not the case being reflected on the showroom floor. Bikes are burning gas and hauling ass! Do keep in mind our sister store, Big St Charles Motorsports and St Charles Indian does sell most of the products mentioned in this article so come on in and give me your opinion and check them out for yourselves, but I have a feeling most in the market for an amazing piece of American iron are gonna be in the saddle of an amazing icon that started in 1903. On the weekend of May 6th-7th, Gateway Motorsports Park presented the 3rd annual ST. LOUIS NOSTALGIA RENDEZVOUS. This old school-type drag event consists of four different points racing sanctions: the Nostalgia Drag Racing League, the Victory Nostalgia Super Stocks club, the Nostalgia Gassers Racing Association, and the Ozark Mountain Super Shifters. More than 200 race cars participated in the event. To make the event true nostalgia, there are certain no-no’s in overall guidelines that must be abided by. In general such as no nitrous, throttle stops, delay box, or traction control allowed. No electric fuel injection and no Rev or RPM limiter allowed except for the Ozark Mountain Super Shifters; and are allowed by Nostalgia Gassers Racing Association only to protect the engine. They cannot be used to control the car launch. If a car has a two step box the low side chip must be removed. Each racing organization follows NHRA guidelines for tech safety inspections. The following is a brief break down of each with a link to their full extent of rules. NOSTALGIA DRAG RACING LEAGUE - http://www.nostalgiadragleague.com/rules.php FED, Altered, F/C, or Door Slammers in the Ross Racing Engines Pro 7.0 and Phenix Industries Pro 7.50 (both heads 1/4 mile, heads up). FED, Altered, FC or Roadsters in Pro Comp and Door Slammers in Pro Gas (both 8.0 to 10.0 index classes). 1979 and older allowed in any class. No Rear Engine Dragsters. All NDRL classes run a .400 tree. NOSTALGIA GASSERS RACING ASSOCIATION - http://nostalgiagassers.com/rules/ All cars in competition to closely resemble the outward appearance of the “Gas Coupes/Sedans” class cars of the 60’s. Nothing appearing like a “Bracket Car”. No aerodynamic changes not fitting to the appearance of a gasser of the 60’s. Cars must have the look of the mid 60’s gasser. The body must be 1957 or older; and body styles 1958 through 1962 can be approved by exception by the rules committee.
