ell, Ladies, here we are - November. This is just about the time we start biting at the heels of the Holiday Season. This is crazy to think the year is starting to come to an end. It’s been a blast all season long, and I can’t wait for what’s in store for all of us next year! All season long I have chatted with you about various things that we women riders would general talk about. Things like, “Why did you start riding your own motorcycle?” and “How far you have traveled on your bike?” to “What not to say to a women rider.” But the thing is, just because we are women and we ride motorcycles doesn’t always mean that is all we want to talk about when we get together. It would almost start to get a bit boring. So, we are women right? What “Women” talk most about is - LIFE. We talk about families, kids, careers, what’s troubling us and even our significant others. There is this certain connection that we have with each other; a confidant perhaps. There are things that a person of the opposite sex just won’t understand or, at the very least, can’t relate to. A women’s mind is a deep cavern of twists and turns; that anyone dare to enter is doing so at their own risk. We are complex individuals that can be unpredictable and predictable, as well as strong and soft all at once. From a very young age we were taught to be a lady; to walk and talk like a lady. My Mother, for example, was taught by her mother to always be a lady. She always had to be in a little dress; never getting dirty. She always had to be prim and proper. That’s what “Men” wanted. It was almost as if my grandmother was playing dress up with a doll.

Sorry Boys, No Men Allowed!

“You capture a man by your outer beauty. You keep a man by your inner strength.” C.Blanton That might be okay for the exterior, but what about the interior? How do you teach a young girl that you need not only the beauty and poise on the outside, but the strength and beauty on the inside? My mother did not learn this until she was an adult, and she still struggled with that every day of her life. One thing that she did vow was that her own daughter will not know that same struggle. She taught me how to be poised on the outside and how to be strong on the inside. When teaching someone to be strong, it comes from allowing them to fall. Now, don’t get me wrong, my mother didn’t just throw me to the wolves and tell me to be strong and fight. She merely allowed me to make mistakes and learn from them. When you are faced with adversities, you have to make conscious choices. You can either crumble and fall or figure out a way to overcome it. Eleanor Roosevelt said it best – “A woman is like a tea bag – you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” Another favorite quote is by Author Nancy Rathburn – “A strong woman understands that the gifts such as logic, decisiveness, and strength are just as feminine as intuition and emotional connection. She values and uses all of her gifts.” “The strength of a woman - let it never go underestimated!” C.Blanton

“Let’s Talk Shop” Over the last several years Missouri legislators have been trying to enact laws to amend helmet requirements for riders under R.S.Mo. § 302.020. The most recent proposed Missouri House Bills this year by general assembly members to exempt from wearing protective headgear are No. 1839 and No. 1655. HB No. 1839 sponsored by Bryan Spencer (R) - 63rd Dist. to make riders 18 years and older exempt; Last action on May 16th when referred to the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee. HB No. 1655 is from Eric Burlison (R) - 133 Dist. for 21 years and older to be exempt. This bill made through to the stages of a Senate hearing on May 7th. This is the second time both Representatives have each proposed these bills in their terms, and neither time passed. Both Republicans Eric Burlison and the proponent of similar HB No. 2052, Delus Johnson – 9th Dist., says that the premises of these bills are about “Freedom”. Opponents of the bill argue changing the law would be a grave disservice to the public. To find out how, I did some research for both sides with the most recent data I could find from various government sources.

Arguments in opposition of the change of law include: Helmets save lives: Repealing the law will lead to an increase in injuries and deaths on state roadways. The Fatality Analysis & Reporting System finds that the motorcycle death rates increased an average of 12.2% in states that have repealed their helmet laws. According to the most current statistics by the National Highway Safety Administration, helmets saved lives of 1,699 motorcyclists nationally in 2012. If all motorcyclists in reported head injury incidents had worn helmets, an additional 781 lives could have been saved. Helmets are estimated to be 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle riders and 41% for passengers. In other words, for every 100 riders killed in crashes not wearing helmets, 37 of them could’ve been saved had all 100 worn helmets. Interestingly enough, when reviewing this NHTSA’s National Center for Statistic & Analysis report from 2012, I compared Missouri and Illinois fatalities of helmet use and found a discrepancy in this argument. Of 104 total motorcyclists killed that year, 91% were helmeted and 9% non-helmeted. In Illinois of 148 killed, 20% were helmeted and 80%

non-helmeted. More people wearing helmets in Missouri died anyway over those not wearing in Illinois. State medical costs will increase: An increase in head trauma injuries also will lead to an increase in the state’s medical expenses creating an economic loss. The Center for Disease Control & Prevention places the number of motorcycle drivers without health insurance at around 50%. They estimate that the economic burden of injuries and deaths from motorcycle related crashes in one year totaled $12 billion nationwide with a substantial proportion of costs paid by the U.S. public due to higher insurance premiums and taxes, as well as lost tax revenue from picking up the bill for uninsured injuries. In 2012 The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety & Loss Date reports for Missouri that 45.9 lives are saved per 100,000 registered motorcycles at an annual cost save at $934 for each, by Missouri having a universal helmet law. This would explain why the Missouri Senate Bill No. 604 that was introduced December 13th, 2013 by Jason Holsman (D) proposed conditions of requiring a health insurance or personal injury protection insurance policy providing a minimum of $50,000 in first party medical benefits for injuries incurred resulting from motorcycle accidents if wanting to be exempt from complying to helmet requirements. Arguments in favor of the change of law include: Protecting civil liberties: The current helmet law represents an unjust interference by the government into the lives of private citizens who can decide for themselves whether to wear a helmet. National trend: Most states, including all but two of the states bordering Missouri, do not require riders to wear helmets on all roadways. Iowa and Illinois – No; Kentucky and Arkansas – 21 yrs and under; Kansas and Oklahoma – 18 yrs and under; Nebraska and Tennessee – Yes. The Missouri Department of Economic Development estimated tourism dollars would’ve increased an additional $3 million between 2010 and 2012 had the helmet provision been repealed. Retaining state revenue: The state is losing money as motorcycle rider’s move to other states with more favorable helmet laws. Groups supporting decreased state regulation, like the Freedom of Road Riders of Missouri, also argue that educating riders and drivers about road safety is more important than passing laws mandating helmet use. Further, they argue wearing helmets does not prevent accidents from happening and only

Thanks for reading and ride safe! driver and rider education can do this. But for now since the law is to wear a helmet, I want to educate you on some tort law regarding personal injury. Until the law is ever changed; you need to know where you stand negligence wise if God forbid you are in an accident. Currently with Missouri’s helmet law, you have a duty of care to yourself to wear it; meaning to protect yourself from legal liability for injury incurred up you. Not doing so is negligent for not taking reasonable care to avoid injury. Negligence is standardized by whether action (or inactions) was the proximate cause of the injury, and if a breach of duty caused injury. Missouri recognizes the legal doctrine of “comparative negligence”. If a plaintiff is partially responsible for their own injuries, recovery will not be barred on account of their negligence; but will be reduced by the percentage of fault attributed to one’s own negligence, and may only collect damages in proportion to the defendant’s degree of fault. So if you were careless and not abiding by the helmet law, your compensation may be reduced by the extent your carelessness is responsible for the injury. This rule of tort law is based on a set of treatises on legal subjects that seek to inform judges and lawyers about general principles of common law known as Restatements of the Law.

By Tami Aguilera

safety is a legal cause of the plaintiff’s harm. In general, the effect of the plaintiff’s reckless disregard of their own safety is the same as that of their ordinary contributory negligence; except where the plaintiff’s conduct is itself in reckless disregard of their own safety, it bars their recovery not only from a defendant who has merely been negligent, but also from one who has acted in reckless disregard of the plaintiff’s safety. The greater fault in the one case is balanced against the greater fault in the other.

Restat 2d of Torts, § 889 Injury Received While Committing a Tort or Crime One is not barred from recovery for an interference with his legally protected interests merely because at the time of the interference he was committing a tort or a crime. The fact that one is doing an illegal act does not prevent them from maintaining an action for harm caused by the negligence or abnormally dangerous activities of a third person. Nevertheless, if the injured person has violated a statute designed to prevent a certain type of risk, they are barred from recovery for harm caused by violation of the statute if, but only if, the harm resulted from a risk of the type against which the statute was intended to give protection. To Conclude: If you sustain injury while not wearing a Restat 2d of Torts, § 502 Reckless Disregard of One’s helmet, and the accident wasn’t your fault, the othOwn Safety er party is not liable or is only partially liable for The factors which determine when the conyour head injury since you broke law not wearing duct of an actor is in reckless disregard of anotha helmet. “The Power Beh When you hear the word “Powersports”, what comes to mind; jet skis, dirt bikes, or maybe sport bikes (i.e.: crotch rockets)? Yes, all these play a part, but it’s so much more. Powersports is a frame of mind, as well as the vast range of transportation. Before I dive into all the elements of the powersports world, I want to tell you about the “Power” behind St. Louis Powersports. I had a chance to sit down and chat with the owner, John Konersmann. Now bear in mind, John is only in his middle 30’s. When I asked him how he became the owner of not one amazing powersports store but two; his first response was, “Well, I took an unusual path to get here.” He proceeded to tell me his story. John was in his early teen years when his father decided to buy a Jet Ski from one of the local powersports dealerships in Festus, MO; which was close to where they lived. He and his family always loved going to the Lake of the Ozarks, and that same summer they loaded up that new Jet Ski and headed out to the lake to break it in. That is where he met a gentleman who was a mobile service tech for Jet Ski’s. John became very fascinated on how this piece of machinery ran. The gentlemen immediately recognized his potential.

Page 18 www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

A few years later, at the age of 16, that same gentleman offered him a job for the summer. After the summer came to an end, he returned home to finish high school. When John graduated high school, his parents began asking him, as all parents tend to do, what his plans are for the future. At the time, John was flipping through a Jet Ski magazine and saw an ad for the American Motorcycle Institute in Daytona, Florida. He pointed at that ad and told his parents that pursuing a career with watercraft was his ambition. So, Off to Daytona, Florida he went to be trained as a water craft technician. His passion for motorcycles was proof in itself that lead to finish the highest in his class. Once he graduated from AMI he landed his first Job right here at Joel Bianco Plus (the former name of St. Louis Powersports). At 17, John started as an entry level PWC Technician. While he was working as a service tech, the ownership changed and was given a new name; St. Louis Powersports. In the meantime, John started getting involved in Jet Ski racing. One day he was out practicing for an upcoming national race and did a back flip off the Jet Ski that resulted in a broken shoulder and cut-up head. Needless to say, that race was not in his present future. Once John was up and moving around he went back to work. Not being able to work as a technician with a surgically repaired shoudler, management decided to put him into sales. John exceeded his boss’s expectations as he quickly began to learn every aspect of the powersports industry. Sadly St. Louis Powersports closed down in 2001, and John went to work for Dave Mungenast

The Sport”

Honda. The following year a gentleman by the name Barry Phegley who owned Midwest Sports in Farmington reopened St. Louis Powersports, and John came back to work for him as his General Manager. In 2004 Barry’s health was beginning to fail and he gave John the opportunity to purchase the dealership. He was truly honored to be given this chance and did not want to pass it up. He went in whole heartedly and put everything he owned on the line. With the go ahead from the bank and all the manufacturers, John became the new owner of St. Louis Powersports! Currently they employ some of the original people that John worked side by side with all those years ago. For the last 19 years, John’s dedication has continued to make St. Louis Powersports the name and the place that you can trust for all your powersports needs. Located at 956 S. Hwy Dr | Fenton, MO 63026 | 636.529.0250. About a year ago, John had the opportunity to open a second location as a dealer solely handling the trustworthy Polaris manufactured products. With Polaris dominating the market for ATV’s and utility vehicles, and his connections with them, he could not pass up yet another chance for success. Less than a year later, St. Charles Powersports opens solely concentrating their efforts to keep Polaris ahead of the pack. Located at 202 Crafton Dr | O’Fallon, MO 63366 | 636.385.6300. those back roads or thrive on the adrenaline rush you get after you jump those dirt ramps? Then check out their great selection of dirt bikes, ATV’s, and side-by-sides. Is your thrill in life racing down that open fairway of a lake or jumping over the wakes left behind by other boats or watercrafts? Then talk to them about their wide array Jet Skis. For those who enjoy the open road and the rocking back on the throttle just to see how fast you can go, then this is the perfect place to go and buy a motorcycle or Spyder. It doesn’t matter whether your choice of adventure is on dirt, water or pavement; between St. Louis Powersports and St. Charles Powersports offering brands like, CanAm/BRP, SeaDoo, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki and Kymco, they have everything you need! One thing you can count on is that John always makes sure that every one of his staff is knowledgeable and current with all the latest information to make sure that you are given the proper guidance through your purchase. Along with the parts and accessory department, there is also an unbelievable services department that will work quickly and efficiently to get you back out enjoying the adventure you love. John’s number one priority is to make these two stores a continued success. There is no questioning how he and his staff will give you the best possible care from the purchase, to the parts and accessories, to the service. As you can see that at the ripe age of 36, John has undoubtedly proven that hard work and dedication is the true Power behind any successful business.

Gateway BMW “Beyond

hen you think of motorcycles manufacturers, who comes to mind; Harley Davidson, Indian, Honda, Yamaha, or maybe Kawasaki? But have you thought about BMW? Some of you may say, “Isn’t that a German automotive company”. Well, the answer is yes! BMW, which stands for Bavarian Motor Works, is out of Munich, Bavaria and is a large automotive manufacturer. But, what you may not know is that BMW started manufacturering motorcycles in 1923; twenty plus years before they began to manufacturer automobiles. Now, I can go on and on giving you an entire history lesson on the creation of BMW; but this story is about one BMW dealership right here in St. Louis. “Gateway BMW” located at 2690 Masterson Ave. | St. Louis, MO 63114. I sat down with Bob Honz, the General Manager, and asked him to give me some back history on this dealership in particular. I also wanted to know a little history about him and how he became the General Manager. First, some back history about “Honz”. Honz grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. Since the age of five, he’s been around motorcycles; everything from dirt bikes to street bikes, pretty much anything he can get his hand on. The moment that he started riding, he was hooked. However, his initial career path was not in the motorcycle industry. He was in the food and beverage industry managing restaurants. In the fall of 1987, the restaurant he was working for transferred him to St. Louis. The one thing that he wanted to do when he came to St. Louis was to buy a Harley. He went to a local Harley dealer, found the used Harley he wanted to buy and proceeded to ask the salesperson if he can take it for a test ride. He had all the proper gear and had a motorcycle endorsement on his driver’s license. The salesperson flat out said NO! That left a bad taste in Honz’s mouth and for that reason; he left the Harley dealer without purchas-

ing anything. Later, he walked into a local BMW dealership, located down at Forest Park and Vandeventer, and was asking some questions in regards to their current line of motorcycles. The salesperson volunteered to have Honz take a motorcycle out for a test ride. He was so impressed by the customer service, not to mention how well that BMW motorcycle handled. Honz was hooked once again. He continued to work as a restaurant manager for many years. Even though his first love was motorcycles, he had a family to support. Through the course of many years Honz was growing rather weary of the restaurant business, but found solace with his BMW motorcycle. He even started his own BMW used parts business. Selling used parts out of a barn. Way before Ebay or Craig’s List. He also was an extremely frequent customer of that BMW dealership. So much so, that he approached the owner many times to let him work there as a salesperson. Finally the owner gave Honz the opportunity. He did very well. In 2003 the owner sold the dealership, at which time Honz became the sales manager. About a year and a half later that BMW dealership closed its doors. In the summer of 2006 a gentleman by the name Dave Hunter, who was also a very good customer of the old BMW dealership, wanted to bring the dealership back to St. Louis. He approached the old owners with a proposition. He would back the adventure financially if they would run the daily operations. They told him they were retired, but he should call Bob Honz. “He can run your dealership for you!” Dave contacted Honz to meet over coffee where they struck a deal. That next year Gateway BMW was born. Dave and Honz intentions with this dealership were to bring it back to the basics; good ‘ole fashion customer service. They made sure that the entire staff was knowledgeable from fender to fender. They wanted them to

Your Wildest Dreams!” treat each and every customer as if they were the only customer. There was a true pride of ownership and still is today. When you walk into Gateway BMW, you feel like Norm from Cheers; “Where everyone knows your name.” Aside from the excellent customer service they offer, BMW has a very versatile line up of motorcycles that range in price from $8,000 all the way up to $30,000. The GS series is one the most fun and adaptable motorcycles they have. Think of a cross between a dirt bike and a street bike. It can go anywhere; and I mean anywhere. You are trucking down the road and you decide that you want to ride some of those cool winding back road -- go right ahead. This series can handle all types of terrain. If you are strictly a “pavement” type rider then take a look at their other models. For instance, the C650GT( 647cc), which is designed for those with more of an Urban Attitude; or possibly the C600 Sport(647cc), which is long and sleek and melds the urban feel with the coolness of a powerful street bike. If you are looking for a bike that can put more rubber on the road, then the R 1200 R(1170cc), HP4(999cc), S1000RR(999cc), or the K1300S(1293cc) is what you should be looking at. With their sleek design and 6 speed transmission you can never go wrong. Then there is the F800R and F800GT; these two models, both with 798cc, are perfect for those who enjoy taking it a bit easier on the road but love the look of speed. And if you are feeling a bit nostalgic, check out their more retro R nineT(1170cc). Then you get to the big boys for your cruising comforts like the R1200RT (1170cc), K1600CT (1649cc), or the K1600GTL(1649cc); all the comforts of your favorite recliner at home. OK, not really, but you

C. Blanton get my point. One of the best parts about BMW motorcycles is in 2012 they started making front and rear ABS braking system standard on all their models; plus traction control. Another great feature that most of the models have is the Electronically Adjustable Suspension. With one push of the button, you can control your throttle response, ABS parameters, traction control parameters,

and your suspension. As I mentioned earlier Honz always focuses on good quality customer service. He is so dedicated to it that he actually organizes group adventure tours across the US and even into other parts of the world. Every year he picks a new place to ride and explore; testing the limits of the GS series bikes. He has taken groups in throughout Missouri and Arkansas trying not to touch any paved roads. He has gone to Colorado, Alaska and is planning for next year to go oversees to Europe, or possibly Morocco. If you are interested on learning how to ride these amazing and versatile bikes on all the different terrains, Honz also offers training courses. He will teach you how to maneuver through all the hills, valleys, gravel, and even mud. Honz has a lot planned for the future of Gateway BMW. He will continue to give you the best customer service, as well as bring a bit of racing into the mix. He is also planning to become the new owner of Gateway so he can continue living his dream. So you see, BMW motorcycles are not just these funny looking bikes with square metal boxes attached to the side. They are an adventure seeking vessel that can take you places that you can only dream of going. The next time you get that itch to be adventurous and you have an open mind, go see Bob Honz at Gateway BMW. He will convert you into becoming a BMW motorcycle lover just like him. I promise you won’t regret it.

Full Throttle Saftey Asylum motorcycle tires The coolest bike, most powerful motor, and “stop on a dime” brakes are useless if the tires have poor contact with the road. Everything, including safety, relies on the few square inches of rubber on the pavement. What good are cool accessories if they end up sliding down the road secondary to a fall caused by hydroplaning or a tire blowout? The injuries caused by such an accident are far more concerning than anything else. Tires are the most important safety factor on the bike, yet many neglect them, cut costs, or lack situational awareness. Tires transmit traction and braking forces to the road surface to keep, change and maintain the motorcycle’s intended path of travel. Tires are not an area of the bike to neglect. INSPECTION INTERVAL A visual inspection of tires before every ride is a good habit and doesn’t take much time. Under well-lit conditions, look for any signs of punctures (such as nails or shards of glass) which might potentially lead to a loss of pressure or a blowout. Bulging or cracking might also occur on old tires. So make sure to roll the bike forward in order to see all tire surface areas. Don’t forget to check the wheel bearings while you’re down there ;-). TIRE TREAD DEPTH / REPLACEMENT Adequate tire tread not only ensures tire integrity but also allows water to be channeled away from the contact patch to maintain grip and prevent hydroplane under wet conditions. You can determine the proper amount of tread simply by using a quarter. Place the quarter within the tread groove; the street tire tread should extend past the top of Washington’s head. If it doesn’t, it’s probably time to replace the tire or blow it completely off the bike while performing a monster burn-out. While it is essential to help a buddy and preserve the safety of the riding group, a certain amount of tact is required when criticizing another person’s motorcycle tires. I found it better to present alternatives to paying full price at the local dealership. The less tactful option usually starts fights and is counter-productive. A front tire may be shot when there is still plenty of rubber on it. If the rear is down to the wear bars, yet the front tire still has plenty of rubber, both have gone through the same number of heat cycles. The front tire may “look” great, but it can be just as worn as the rear. A motorcycle with a worn tire and a new one can become unstable and create a dangerous riding situation. Motorcycle radials and motorcycle bias-ply tires each give a specific type of

Page 30 www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

By TJ Miles

handling characteristic. Mixing them may also create an unstable situation, a rougher ride, or even diminish the bikes ability to corner well. This is why you should always replace tires in sets. TIRE SHOPPING There are several internet retailers who offer a better choice of tires at lower prices and many local shops willing to mount them… Google that SH*T! I can buy a 200-series (HD-Crossbones) Michelin, Avon, or Metzeler for approximately $160 on-line; or pay $240 for an OEM tire at the dealership which will wear out twice as fast. Safety is affordable with little effort. When mounting a new tire, make sure to check the directional arrow so the tire tread runs in the right direction. A friend of mine placed his pride and joy in a bike-show last year with the directional arrows pointed the wrong way. The judges didn’t catch it, but we did. He declined to answer when we asked if his bike had a reverse gear on it! CHECKING TIRE PRESSURE Tire pressure is especially crucial on motorcycles. Small air pressure adjustments can quickly change handling and riding quality. Tires also wear more quickly when they’re not properly inflated; adding yet another reason to check tire pressure regularly. The best time to check tire pressure is before riding while the tires are cool. Once the bike is in motion, tire temperatures warm up, which changes the density and pressure of the air inside. Use the pressure figures printed on the sidewall of the tire for recommended PSI levels. Motorcycle tires have both imprinted and raised numbers and letters on their sidewalls, providing important information. This includes: the tire’s size, maximum speed, load index, construction type, balance marks, and wear indicators. It is essential to match the appropriate tires to each motorcycle, as well as ensuring they are properly mounted, inflated, and maintained. Anything more than a 10% gain in pressure after a few hours of riding indicates the tires are working too hard. It might be a good idea to lighten the load and/or slow down. “Well, we can’t slow down. I’m a guess’n that the ol’ lady will have to buy her own bike!” Tire failure is a catastrophic issue on two wheels. With what we know about tire safety, how can we afford not to make it our highest priority? “You have a lot riding on your tires”, “Power is nothing without control”, “Where the rubber meets the road”, “We discover, you explore”, “Make love on the road”…I’ll leave that last one alone. Happy Thanksgiving and remember to fry that bird outside!

CRACK UP’S VACATIONS

Billy Bob and Luther were talking one afternoon when Billy Bob tells Luther, “Ya know, I reckon I’m ’bout ready for a vacation. Only this year I’m gonna do it a little different. The last few years, I took your advice about where to go.” “Well, what are you going to do, then?” Luther asks. “Three years ago you said to go to Hawaii. I went to Hawaii and Earlene got pregnant.” “Yeah,” Luther agrees. “Then two years ago, you told me to go to the Bahamas, and Earlene got pregnant again.” “I remember,” Luther says. “Last year you suggested Tahiti and darned if Earlene didn’t get pregnant again.” “Yep,” Luther says. “So, what you gonna do this year that’s different?” Billy Bob says, “This year I’m taking Earlene with me.”

PASSWORD

A husband and wife are trying to set up a new password for their computer. The husband puts, “Mypenis,” and the wife falls on the ground laughing because on the screen it says, “Error. Not long enough.”

KIDS SAY THE DARNEST THINGS

Teacher: “Kids, what does the chicken give you?” Student: “Meat!” Teacher: “Very good! Now what does the pig give you?” Student: “Bacon!” Teacher: “Great! And what does the fat cow give you?” Student: “Homework!”

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY

A man kills a deer and takes it home to cook for dinner. Both he and his wife decide that they won’t tell the kids what kind of meat it is, but will give them a clue and let them guess. The dad said, “Well it’s what Mommy calls me sometimes.” The little girl screamed to her brother, “Don’t eat it. Its an asshole!

DADDY LIED

A child asked his father, “How were people born?” So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now.” The child ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mom was talking about her side of the family.”

FAMILY MOLES

There was a papa mole, a momma mole, and a baby mole. They lived in a hole out in the country near a farmhouse. Papa mole poked his head out of the hole and said, “Mmmm, I smell sausage!” Momma mole poked her head outside the hole and said, “Mmmm, I smell pancakes!” Baby mole tried to stick his head outside but couldn’t because of the two bigger moles. Baby mole said, “The only thing I smell is molasses.”

DEER!

some higher than normal wreck reports involving two wheels. This is contributed to many factors. All summer we have nice days and clean roads. In the fall we have leaves on the road, morning dew, heavy rain fall that brings road scat and gravel into the road, and my worst nightmare… deer! It really can be a peacefully disaster as the leaves start to fall collecting in the most inopportune places and the cool dewy air sets in. Wet slick leaves can cause both front and rear end to wash out just like gravel. The best things to remember are a few pointers I took from one of our MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) instructors here at Big St Charles Motorsports with our Beginners Riding Safety Class, Mr. Charlie Brown. I started by asking him what his best advice is on deer strike situations. His answer was not what I was expecting. He said “Well, don’t hit the deer...” I gave him a blank stare and he replied “If you are using the SEE method you shouldn’t have an issue.” What is the SEE method? 1: Search = search means to scan aggressively for potential factors and hazards. 2: Evaluate = to evaluate means to anticipate problems. 3: Execute = three action steps make up the execute phase (a): adjust speed, (b): adjust position, (c): communicate your intentions.

Article By Marshall Tucker

What all this really boils down to is watch what is going on ahead of you as well as around you. Be sure not to fall victim to the “fixation” factor. As an issue comes up we have a tendency to “track” said issue. Always remember that where the head and eyes go, the bike and body follow. So if you focus on an impending issue your chances of hitting it are damn near 100%. Always follow through your turns passed any issues. Now deer can be another issue; they have minds of their own. They never seem to do what you think they are gonna do. Also, they don’t come with hi beams, reflectors, horns, or blinkers. So what do you do? Me, myself, and I, tend to stay outta the wooded areas around dusk and around this time of year. The bottom line is it’s a wild animal; there is no predicting what it is going to do and/or how it is going to react. So the best bet is to be aware yourself. Scan for eye shine in the turns and straights. Most times they will freeze but be mindful; they could dart at any time. As riders it’s a leisure trip for us to hop on the bike but as we relax we must also stay alert. Should you have any questions about our Beginners Riding Safety Class please contact Dennis at 636-9466487. Thanks for stopping by and y’all enjoy the ride! www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com Page 35

one of their sons paint a sharp dressed Penguin on the trunk to take to the many car shows and cruises they enjoyed so much. That is another good thing about the TRI-5s they have room for family, so they were able to enjoy the Car Life together. As the years went by the kids grew up and went off to buy their own cars. It was time for John & Helen to re-do the ’56 one more time. So with retirement it brings you more time to do the fun things you enjoy. That means more Car Shows & Cruises not only in St. Louis; they will drive this Kustom all across the country. To be able to do this John pulled the engine

and he built a 327 cu.in. bored 30 over and added Camel Double Hump Heads and a mild cam. The body was showing its age too so they brought the car to me at “Showcar Specialist” for a lot of massaging & smoothing of all the rough edges. The plan was to paint it HOT ROD BLACK, which is a Suede look. Some say it is easy to paint a car flat black. -Don’t believe them if you want it to look nice. You have to go through all of the same steps as if you were going to make it shiny; actually even more since you can’t sand & buff it out after spraying it. So be careful & take your time. With the Kustom theme John also changed the grille to a tubular style, added fender skirts, red wheels, Lancer hub caps, Cal-Custom tail lights, and finished it off with a new interior using 210 Del-Ray factory stock designs. So now that they have the car finished to their liking; all they need to do now is wait for Spring so they can hit the highways. Make sure you pick up the Full Throttle’s December issue to see this amazing 1956 Chevy all “Dressed In Suede”. www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com Page 41

Rally for Rory On Saturday September 20th, 2014 We were proud to have sponsored a poker run call Ride for Rory. If you took one look at this precious little face, you would have no idea that she is three rounds of chemo treatments, central line placement, bone marrow extraction, kidney battling for her life. biopsy, and a wide array of blood work. This Rory is about 7 months would be a stuggle to endure as an adult much less as a little baby. old by now. In the middle of this past July, her mother took Rory to the ER because her little tummy was all bloated. She was not prepared for what the doctors were about to tell her. Rory was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma Cancer. This is a malignant tumor that spread very quickly.

She was immediately admitted to the hospital and had surgery the next day. If this wasn’t enough to drop you to your knees; more bad news kept coming. This tumor had spread to her liver, lymph nodes, head, adrenal glands, and around and throughout her organs. Within four days Rory had endured Page 44 www.FullThrottle-Magazine.com

The families insurance is running out and the mom had to quit her job in order to take care of Rory full time. They have had so many people rally around them. There has been local motorcycle chapters like Road Riders for Jesus, Fire & Iron Fire Fighters Motorcycle Club, Reguladores Gateway Chapter as well as many others. Rory continues to fight for her life and the prognosis is looking good. If you want to help and be kept up to date regarding Rory’s condition, you can go to www.rallyforrory.com for all the latest information.

As I walked around looking at bikes in 2012 in Sturgis, I realized how choppers were becoming a thing of the past and that Baggers were coming to the forefront. We decided at that point that we need to become knowledgeable in the Bagger Industry. We arrived back at the shop, and immediately began building two custom baggers; but added something we knew would catch Rider’s attention. The first two baggers with a 26 inch front wheel rolled out of Jammer Joint Motorcycles for the Annual Rat Run in Oct 2012. The reaction from people was unbelievable. People could not believe a wheel that big would be on the front of a touring bike. We have continued to educate ourselves on products that are coming out almost daily to customize your bagger. We have tried things out as a “test” to see how they will handle. We want to make sure these products are going to hold up to our customer’s expectations. So to start this process we want to talk about the “Big Wheel”. The question we always get asked is “Do I cut the frame or bolt a rake kit on?” We have looked into this same dilemma. Here are some of the pros to a rake kit: •-Installed in 1 day (Drop your bike off today and pick it up tomorrow)

•-Does not void a warranty •-No Salvage Titling •-Maintains the correct trail numbers so that you have an even better than stock ride •-Can easily be returned to stock •-No need for extended forks •-No need to disassemble your forks •-Built of high quality billet aluminum and steel •-Allows use of existing fairing •-MADE IN AMERICA!!!! These rake kits increase your bagger’s front axle offset to a 40 degree angle. These kits move the pivot point of your front end forward about 2”. By doing this it results in low speed maneuverability and rock solid stability at high speeds. It allows you to run up to a 26” front wheel and utilize your stock lower legs and fork tubes. These kits come with the adapter ring to lower the headlight back down on a batwing style fairing. It also comes with new upper fork sliders, and a new lower triple tree cover. These rake kits start around $2300. To have one installed with new wheel, labor, and paint is usually in the $6000-$7000 range. The process of doing the conversion is an easy one. First we remove the stock triple trees. We then install the new raked triple trees. Everything is torqued to specs. Next, we install new caps on the top of the fork tubes, where we then slide the tubes back into the new triple trees. There are a total of 8 pinch bolts that are torqued down to secure the tubes in place. The new fender and wheel are now installed. If necessary, the fairing is replaced and the new headlight adapter ring is installed. This whole process takes about 8 hours. Make sure you watch for Full Throttle Magazine’s December issue for the next step in building these big wheeled baggers.
