Summer is starting to wind down and the cold weather will be here soon… “Hold on Partner, not so fast…” We still have some great events and great riding left this year. So let’s not count the fun out just yet!! How about Sunday October 5, the 35th annual Rat Run. Start out at Shady Jacks and then get you and your friends over to Grafton, Illinois to The Hawg Pit BBQ. If you want to make the best of your day then Hawg Pit has to be your final stop of the Rat Run. The folks at Hawg Pit & Full Throttle have a huge day planned with lots of great BBQ, cold Beer, motorcycle games, vendors and a whole lot of prizes and free gifts to be given away. If you miss this stop, you might as well stay home!!! Saturday October 11 offers another great day at SuWallers for their annual October Fest. Starting at 2pm until close there will be BBQ, drink specials, attendance prizes and raffles and of course live music all day. This will be a fun day to just come to eat drink and hang out all day. We all know SuWallers puts on one hell of a party. So mark your calendars for that one and don’t forget to tell your friends. Saturday, October 18 will be the “Fall Freeze Poker Run”. Of course it won’t be freezing so you need to saddle up that bike and be at Fro’s Place on South Broadway for Breakfast starting at 8am. Ride will leave at 9:30 and we will hit some great bars and have a great day with the last stop at Halfway Haus on Michigan. Get your 50/50 tickets so you can win the jackpot. Well, It’s October now and the riding season is starting to wind down. It’s been a great summer and a lot has happened over these months. First, I want to thank all of our loyal readers for embracing us as one of your own. Bringing Full Throttle Magazine back to the main stream was one of the best decisions that Bob and I made. We have always enjoyed the love of riding our motorcycles and having the camaraderie with all of you. So, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Without you, we would not be here.
Alright, last month I asked all my lady riders about their MOTORCYCLE TRAVELING. What is the farthest distance you have traveled on your motorcycle? I stated that I have not traveled very far riding my own bike; my guess it’s about 300 miles one way. But riding on the back with my husband, we have gone much farther. All the way up to Wisconsin, as far west as Colorado Springs and as far South as Memphis. We trailered farther than that; Sturgis, Florida, and Texas. Now that I have a larger, more comfortable bike with the capacity of holding more, I would love to venture farther distances on my own. Whittney, emailed me and said that she has a Road King and she road this three week long loop that took her from St. Louis, South to Oklahoma then to the upper pan of Texas and then through New Mexico. From there she road through Arizona that took her to Southern California. Riding up the pacific coast of California, she made it about two-thirds and cross back East through the state to land in Nevada. Heading through Nevada and then through Utah, she ventured North to Wyoming.

She crossed Wyoming to South Dakota and started down through Iowa back toward Missouri. Finally make it back home to St. Louis. All I can say is, Whittney, I applaud you. That must have been one amazing adventure. Carolyn wrote in and said that her and her husband flew to Sydney, Australia. They rented motorcycles and traveled all over the continent. They were gone about two weeks. Take about four days off for the travel time. Now, obviously you can’t ride a motorcycle all the way to Australia, but what a fantastic time they must have had? I got so jealous after I read that story. That is one place that is on my own “Bucket List.” When you are on your own motorcycle and you set out to take a trip, it’s much more empowering then just riding around town. There seems to be more elements of control; I know I love it. For this next issue, I’m going to change it up a bit. Since the beginning, I’ve come up with our topics to discuss. This time, I want to put the ball in your court. I would like to know what all of you would like to discuss. Email me a topic or two so we can chat. Let me know what your thinking. “Let’s Talk Shop” Of the various forms of investments, I believe there is a greater intrinsic value and growth to benefit from with Classic Collector Cars than the annual index percentage of the stock markets, the housing market, and even crude oil. Unlike real estate, no neighbor’s car will be foreclosed on to drop your cars value. But when the aliens come to deplete our natural resources for oil, they may come for your car to scrap the metal to build their own hot rod spaceship. So how do you determine what vehicle is of best value then? Well I’ll tell you what NOT to base it on, and that are auctions. A realistic person cannot use these auctions and things like Barrett Jackson Mini Index or Hagerty’s Blue Chip Index to measure the worth of your car. That would be like trying to compare the value of a one bedroom studio apartment in Brooklyn to the Trump Mansion. Step aside from the Television please. The ordinary person isn’t within financial reach to kick out that level of funds on the open market. Go look up the values of those indexed vehicles and you tell me if the average person has those level of funds lying around to invest like they’re Jay Leno. He doesn’t even have intentions of selling any of his collection. He could be looked at as a hoarder; which leads me to the key point of why auctions are skewed and misleading. Those who purchase on these forms of auctions are the overtly wealthy who are bidding on high end vehicles just because they WANT the car regardless. It is almost as if the car is only a trophy just to say they have it. Here some fool shows up at the auction and decides to make it rain like a Las Vegas bachelor party at the strip club, and ruins it for the rest of us by trying to impress everyone with his air flinging of the bling. That’s just great buddy. Thanks a lot. Show’s over. Now how about MY CAR? Yes. My car. Your car. Can you really predict what cars are reliable to beat inflation and be a more conventional investment with impressive returns? Let’s break this down as simple as possible. Classic Collector Cars will depreciate with fairly higher priced models due to less people interested. When your willingness of buyers drop, your car value drops from non-marketability. As with a stock or bond, you need to make the best choice before appreciation so it does so above the rate of inflation. Unlike a stock or bond, you have to weigh in the additional costs of ownership for matters such as maintenance, storage, insurance, and rebuild/ restoration. The value of a commodity is based on its supply and demand in the free market because people give the item value based on their own perception of what they feel it’s worth in trade for something they want more or less of. This is part of how one can determine the best pricing
Realistic Investing Expectations to invest in a Classic vehicle. If there are large numbers of a certain kind of vehicle for sale at a given time, the competition is stronger and the prices are kept reasonable. This is when you should buy. Better deals tend to be on completely finished cars. The difference in pricing between a finished car and a project restoration is usually less than the cost to get it done. So it’s cheaper to find one ready to go and then piddle with it how you see fit. That‘s not to say unfinished or project cars aren’t good. They’re just better if they’re running and drivable where maybe only lacking something cosmetically or interior work wise. You can still have fun at car shows and cruises as you gather the resources to fix it. If you can find a seller that’s accumulated the parts needed, but just never got to fabricate, machine, or paint them; then that’s even better yet. That saves you time and energy to hunt stuff down. If you have to go on the prowl for bits and pieces, and the cost of buying all the new components exceed the seller’s asking price then that’s not considered a quick investment. That’s just you about to take on an ambitious mission because you want that car out of want, and not as an asset to be willing to liquidate. There is a difference because some unfinished cars couldn’t be completed for the same price of others to offset the seller’s list price. If things are missing, find out why. Are they even available? Are aftermarket parts offered? How affordable are they? Is what’s needed interchangeable with similar body styles from the
manufacturer to swap out? These things might be why the seller is trying to get rid of the car in the first place and you’re about to be stuck with the hassle and kick yourself in the rear later if you don’t do your homework. You’re spending the money, so the car you choose as a means of investment should really be the one you want in case you’re stuck with it, yet easy to sell if need be. Some key factors that stipulate the criteria of value are: Popularity; Originality; Rarity; Color; Mileage; and Storage. Many will periodically change up and modify to their personal liking. This is why I state popularity first, and will further define that as being in terms of the cars model type and style of construction. For instance, you’re not going to move a four door Sedan like you will a Roadster or Coupe if the wifey comes to you and says you’re about to add triplets to your chicken “coop” and it’s time to liquidate. I know it sucks, but the toy might have to be replaced with a soccer mom minivan. The means of Popularity flows with factors of Originality, Rarity, and Color. Rocking some one-off centerlines that would only get your teenage son a date if he’s a hip-hop rapper, super-uber horsepower that isn’t even necessary to win a NASCAR race, or going with a color scheme that only you have sentiment with because it’s your deceased granny’s favorite color of the apple trees during harvest time ARE NOT going to have a substantial return on investment rating. Original and Rare are not the same, nor does a personal interpretation of either term equal money in the bank. Unique and unusual modifications create the issue of being too costly to return back to the traditional design. Now you have fewer prospects interested in the car if you have to sell because there’s less flexibility to bring it back to how it came as factory and stock off the assembly line. Beauty isn’t always in the eye of the beholder; at least when it comes to money. Classic type cars retain more value if all the original equipment such as dashboard instruments, seats, and carpeting (to name a few) has been left intact and decent condition. When modified, the quality of the work performed and materials used are what will determine the value. Obviously the more miles you rack up farting around in the car will lower the value. If you’re going a great distance for a show, then I suggest investing in a trailer too. Enjoy
your ride by all means and race every kid on the highway. Just keep an eye on it. When you bring it home, my God wipe that baby down spotless. Get all that grimy dirt and whatever else flipped up from the road off so it doesn’t settle in the paint. After you get it all cleaned up don’t go leaving it outside either. Over exposure of sunlight can fade the molding, paint, and trim; or the cold harden and crack any rubber. Love your car and it will love you back. If you think you’re going to try and sell something that appear unmaintained, you’re going to get low-balled to hell because people will assume you just don’t care. If your ultimate intentions are to make money, you eventually have to let go and sell at the cars peak value. Most don’t want to sell though because it’s their baby. In case you have to though, please keep all things just mentioned in mind during your initial purchase or rebuild.

Those were the last words Kelly Jensen wrote. So simple but yet, so profound. Bob and I met Kelly almost 15 years ago through her parents Bruce and Cathy. From the moment we met Kelly, we couldn’t help but to get caught up in her laughter; it was infectious. She would begin to laugh and you couldn’t help yourself but to start laughing with her. Though the course of getting to know Kelly, we came to the realizations that this is one individual that th will take life by the (lack of a better word) BALLS and run. She never backed down from a challenge. She faced life with courage. She was a force to be reckoned with. I will always remember how Kelly would see us from a distance. She would begin a full on run toward us, grabbing me around the waist and picking me up in this big bear hug and then go after Bob, hugging and grabbing his ass and laughing the entire time. Now, Kelly was not deemed with the nickname “Krazy Kel” for nothing. She was a wild child for sure. But that is who Kelly was. She wanted to live and love and not take life so damn serious. Kelly left a big void in all our lives and she is going to be missed by so many. Even though she may not be with us on this earth, she is looking down and telling everyone “TODAY IS YOUR DAY TO LIVE”.

all riding presents unique hazards. Knowing (Situational Awareness) is half the battle. The other half is doing something about it.
There is nothing more problematic than deer in the rural areas where we like to ride. Despite the numbers published by the governmental agencies, it seems like there are more of them each year. I need more tags to do my part! Deer forage areas are reduced by crop harvest and they are pushed closer to the roads by farm equipment and hunters this time of year. Also, it is deer breeding season which causes them to be more active. They are running “Willy-Nilly” all over the place like a bunch of sex starved rabbits. The peak of this activity is usually at dusk and dawn when the mood is right. The best way to avoid hitting a deer is to stay aware, especially in rural areas. Search the roadway and shoulders of the road. Areas where crops or timber are relatively close to the road present the greatest challenge. Slow-down in deer populated areas marked by “Deer Crossing” signs. These are not “Deer Crosswalk” signs. They are “Deer Jump Out of Nowhere” signs! These areas provide you the shortest reaction time. Deer look like tasty, floating close to the ground, burlap bags during the day and their eyes look like blinking reflectors at night. If possible, ride behind a four wheel vehicle in deer populated areas while maintaining a safe distance to avoid flying bones and warm meat. Straight forward, evasive braking is the best maneuver to avoid a collision with a deer.

hazard. Many people motor out to see fall colors. They are easily distracted by the sites off road and may not see you. “Well, would you look at that Margery; it’s a …SPEED BUMP! Watch for other vehicles and be aware. Also, wet and dry leaves on the roadway can be very slick causing loss of traction during acceleration (uncontrolled, sideways burn-out), in a curve or when attempting to stop. A simple reduction of speed (slow down) and awareness can mitigate this hazard. Fall temperatures can run the spectrum from warm to below freezing. In most cases, regardless of midday temperatures, the temperature will drop once the sun starts to set. Hypothermia greatly reduces a rider’s ability to arrive home safe. Early symptoms include shivering. Then, reduced motor skills and varied levels of consciousness set in. Alcohol causes early onset of hypothermia. Riders attempt to fight the cold by drinking more alcohol and riding in unorthodox positions to pick up engine heat. It’s always a good idea to have cold weather gear packed in case of a situation and keep a pair of clear glasses or a clear helmet shield for riding in low light conditions. Treat eyewear and shields with some form of anti-fogging agent before riding in cold temperatures. Be sure to pay particular attention for frost on bridge decks or other elevated surfaces, railroad crossings, and in shady areas late at night and in the morning hours. Avoiding Fall Season hazards is easy if you are prepared. Keep the rubber side down!

elcome back Full Throttle readers and riders! It has been an amazing season this year but unfortunately the fall weather seems to be well ahead of schedule. Places like South Dakota received their first snow already which is the earliest in recorded history! I enjoy my fall rides but seems like we may just skip the colorful leaves and go straight to the dreaded gray blah of winter. Let’s hope the long term forecast predictions are incorrect, I mean the forecasters seem to be wrong a lot anyway right? Anyone have a snowmobile I can borrow for the Rat Run? Well before the season ran out I was able to log some miles and the best part, I was getting paid to do so! Just last month I had the opportunity to take a ride with my good friend as well as my competition here in town, Zach White of Doc’s Harley-Davidson. He and I left out on a Saturday morning heading north on the river road to Madison Wisconsin for a week long riding working road trip. First stop was the Drag Specialties VIP parts Expo in Madison, after that we would turn right around and head south ending up in Nashville Tennessee for the Harley-Davidson International Dealer Meeting. The river road was an amazing ride but eventually gave way to corn fields further north… a lot of corn fields. The Drag Specialties VIP expo is for dealers only and is designed to get the front line sellers

in front of the venders they sell the most of. It is always a valuable trip for me; the opportunity to sit in front of the owners of some of the biggest companies. Hearing them speak of the product they are so very proud of is a huge high for me. It’s not always about the parts but sometimes about the relationships made. It’s nice to meet a personal contact with a company, new or old, and have a “go too” person vs the guy that started last week! On the Parts side of things it was pretty much even keel, nothing super crazy to report at this time. Lots of big wheel bagger parts.. So we took in the products we were not familiar with and spent some time with the ones we knew as well and thanked those who had helped us satisfy customers in the past. After saying our good byes we headed south to Nashville to join the over 600 Harley dealers converging on the country music capital from all over the world! Needless to say we were both very excited! After spending $25.75 in tolls in Illinois on roads that we could only go 45 mph on due to all the construction, we took a detour somewhere in Indiana and guess what? More corn fields!! ws and Back Roads in Nashville was impressive, a sea of motorcycles and smiling faces. First stop welcome party! Harley has been working with some major momentum in recent months and they don’t look like they have any intention of stopping. They released three major units this year that really caught my eye. In fact the first one has three wheels; that’s right the new Free Wheeler, a new compact trike model for the lineup. It’s been shortened and narrowed to give it a low slung sexy stance and the price tag has been trimmed as well making it very appealing and affordable.
Of course the return of the Road Glide was a massive success. With the redesign of this bike combined with the legendary handling that the Road Glide is loved for they have not lasted on the sales floor here at St Charles Harley-Davidson. In fact, selling one of our first Road Glides builds in record time! But the one bike that really got my attention is the new Low models for the Ultra Classic and the Limited. Now I have never claimed to be a tall man, nor a short one, but unfortunately I still struggle with a full “Dresser” aka Ultra Classic. The tall center of
gravity of the tour pak and my short legs don’t get along. So Harley listened to the customers and produced the Low models. With a saddle height of 27.3 laden, it is the lowest model offered in the industry! Not just Harley-Davidson, the industry as a whole! With a redesigned reach seat, new suspension, pull back handle bars and a trimmed down primary case I was able to sit on this bike flat footed, and in my Chuck Taylor’s no less! I even had Katie of our St. Charles HOG chapter take a seat and she is five foot even! Never saw myself wanting such a massive bike but sitting on the new Limited Low model really changed my thinking! If you know someone who has always wanted an Ultra but are “vertically challenged”, tell them to get on down to the show room floor and check it out! Leaving the Harley meeting and VIP Drag Specialties events are always like leaving summer camp when I was a kid for me. It’s always lots of fun, you meet new friends, you have tons of stories to tell when you get back, and that sad feeling knowing you won’t see those friends again till next year. On the way back to St Louis I rode with Kiel Morgan our service manager here at the shop and Zach of Doc’s. Three rider’s, two dealerships, one goal. S o, here we are at the time of year when the
weather changes quickly that you better grab all of the fun you can before it is too cold to do anything. We all complain about the weather and how you never know what to expect. If you haven’t figured it out yet, you’re living in the mid-west. I remember
around this time each year when you had to winterize your toys and that was the end of the fun. The typical riding season always seems to come and go so quickly. We all love the open road and not to be stuck on the couch for 6 months. But, with all these climate change, it seems we can take our bikes and cars out on those good days even through the off season. I know we are into October but September is month that a large group of friends and I look forward to every year. Every September, Springfield IL hosts

a Route 66 Festival with tons of great cars; an estimated 3500 or more. That is where I met Ed Gagnor, a seemingly calm and quite kind of guy. As we began to talk he took me to see his car, this calm and quite guy began to fade off into the distance. All that I could concentrate on was this ’56 Chevy that sat before me. To quote Manfred Mann’s Earth Band I was “blinded by the light”. It was an awesome car to say the least. Getting to know Ed I quickly realized that he was no stranger to Hot Rods or Harley’s, he has had more than I can dream about. They were all great looking machines and all were very fast. Ed purchased this ’66 Nova after the Route 66 Festival last year. He bought the car with the intent of being Roller without the engine. He already had plenty of ideas on what he wanted to do with the car but as it sat it already was plenty cool and fast. The previous owner was Brian Marko from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, who restored the car all the way up from a bare shell. The only thing he did not do was the paint work. The gentlemen who took care of that task was Dave Gerhart, also from Pennsylvania. Brian restore a back half using a kit from S&W

Race Cars and also added the 8 point cage but, for the 9.99 Dial Ins he had Tori Shelhamer add the extra bars. The Nova was very fast and ran 9.33 @ 144 MPH with the old 540 BBC motor in it. Like I said, it was already a cool car and it won many high earning awards. You may have even seen it on the TV Series PINKS; it was featured twice. Let’s concentrate on what big plans Ed had for this ’66 Nova. First he ordered a “SUPER BAD ASS” 496 Stroker Big Block Chevy. (That is not a name I gave it, that is exactly how the sales brochure calls it in the Big Al’s Toy Box catalog.) It is a Turn Key motor, 830 horsepower out of the box. The motor has the best of everything including the BDS Airlock 871 Supercharger. I say go order one now for spring. It is part #561A. When you have a motor like this you don’t want to leave it to chance that everything is right so you take it to someone you trust. In this case it was Omer Phelps, he re-tuned it to make it more Street-able because it is driven at least 3 times a week. Ed
also had to change the torque convertor and added a 2 step rev-limiter for burn outs and the tranny brake. The Nova drives, handles, and steers great with the Flaming River rack & pinion steering, the Wilwood disc brakes at all 4 corners and the Ford 9” with 4.11 YUKON Locker rear end. To make sure you have it in the right gear he has a Reversed valve body in the 400 Turbo transmissions with Cheetah SCS shifter. To get the power to the streets it has a classic set of Convo Pro wheels, these look good on anything and the Hoosier 32X14 slicks make it hook up and launch straight as an arrow. To keep an eye on what’s happening he is using all AUTO METER - Phantom gauges in the dash and even has the fuel pressure and the boost gauge on the back side of the blower so he doesn’t have to look down too often when he is FULL THROTTLE. For a car this Bad Ass Ed still says it is his Street Car and not a Race Car and again drives it at least 3 times a week, but who wouldn’t want to? It has the Tame 830 Horsepower motor, automatic transmission (sort of) and a 3 1/2” exhaust (if it has any at all) open headers mostly. It pulls the front wheels and carries them down the road; it has an Ed Quay Race car rear wing, S&W wheelie bars, installed by FISH. This car is Certified for 8.5 second runs and with it being de-tuned to be STREETABLE, it still runs 10’s in the 1/4 mile any time. And, to top it off, the license plate reads RUNZ-OK. With the cool vibe the true gem gives off, who wouldn’t want to drive it all of the time?
