Well…. If you made it to any event this September, I’m positive that it was the 3rd Annual Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest. The reason that we know you all made it, is because we had the opportunity to meet a lot of you, and saw the thousands of bikes that filled the streets at the lake. If you didn’t make it out this year, you lost out on one hell of a time. But there’s always next year. Read on for the new dates! Since it’s starting to get colder out… there are fewer beautiful days to ride. But that’s what they make leathers for, right? So get out your cold-weather gear and make sure that you make it to Shady Jack’s for the Bi-State Biker Bash II on October 24th. It starts at noon, and ends when you fall off the bar stool. Another annual event, that everyone on 2 or 3 wheels should make it out for is the Bikers For Babies Ride. October 10th and 11th at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Stop by the Full Throttle booth and say “what’s up?” And since you’ve been waiting for it, November 15th Full Throttle in conjunction with Thunder Alley Promotions and APMC are holding a Custom Bike and Hot Rod Show at the Belle-Claire Fairgrounds in Belleville IL. Prizes to be awarded for the best shit out there! Contact: Steve@FullThrottleMidwest.com for more info.

SEE YA AT THE BIKER BASH !

S W E I V L A G LE MOTORCYCLISTS SLIGHTED

BY USDOT DISTRACTED DRIVING SUMMIT

EVENT STAGED AS PRETEXT FOR MORE GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION Bruce on Bikers’ Rights (October 2009 | Special Edition)

Last week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and the Department of Transportation staged a two-day Distracted Driving Summit in Washington DC: Of all motorists, motorcyclists are the most vulnerable to injury or death as a result of accidents caused by distracted drivers. Yet for some reason, neither the American Motorcyclist Association (“AMA”), nor the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (“MRF”), nor any of the attorney-fronting faux MROs were invited to sit on any Summit panel, give a presentation, or even make a formal statement. In fact, neither “motorcycles” nor “motorcyclists” were even mentioned in the Summit agenda: Why motorcyclists were slighted is a mystery. Another mystery is how the federal government managed to issue press release DOT 15609 summarizing the conclusions and recommendations coming from the Summit at 1:07pm ET, when the Summit did not officially conclude until 23 minutes later: Could it be that the desired outcomes from the Summit were determined in advance, and that the event itself was merely pretext for a pre-determined government agenda? Well if that was the case, it would be no historical first... But either way, it would appear that motorcycle riders have no explicit place in that agenda, nor were we mentioned in Ray LaHood’s opening remarks that set the stage for this choreographed demonstration of “democracy in action”: One would hope that the editor of “Seventeen Magazine”, along with all the other traffic safety experts on LaHood’s blue-ribbon panels, would have at least recognized the existence of motorcycles as an accepted form of motorized transportation, and acknowledged the right of motorcyclists to safely share the road. To determine whether that was indeed the case, I invite you to watch the recorded two days of webcasts here: If two days is more time than you can spare, you can alternatively read the detailed notes taken by veteran bikers’ rights activist Lynn Wesley, who made that investment on your behalf: Expect your conclusion to coincide with this observation made on Day 2 by AMA representative and Summit attendee Imre Sautzer: “For many years, individuals and groups in the motorcycling community have been working with all levels of government (particularly state legislators) to insure all vehicle operators are held accountable for their actions. With all the recent interest to address distracted driving in our state legislatures, we believe practical and enforceable laws that protect all roadway users, particularly vulnerable users such as motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians, are essential. But I’m concerned that much of the research and technology discussions that took place yesterday paid little or no attention to our place in the transportation mix.” Another conclusion you might reach is that the principal piece of federal legislation for which this Summit was staged is the “Alert Drivers Act” If passed, this bill will reduce the amount of Federal highway funding available to States that do not enact a law prohibiting an individual from sending or receiving text messages while operating a motor vehicle. Some will call this a blackmail bill ... some will label it feel-good legislation ... some will say it’ll make no difference ... and some will assert the reverse. I say it’s a far, far cry from what I was hoping for. 08

OCTOBER 2009

As I proposed to Secretary LaHood a few weeks ago, “...motorists who engage in discretionary distractions must be held accountable for the harm they cause.” And I am sure Summit attendee Greg Zaffke II and thousands of others who have lost love ones to careless cagers will agree that bans on texting will do nothing to mitigate a myriad of other discretionary distractions (like painting fingernails) which are just as dangerous. I likewise expect little argument to the assertion that distracted driving (or FTY-ROWV) penalties that are either difficult! lt to enforce, or not sufficiently severe, will probably be ignored: There is some irony associated with the “Alert Drivers Act”. The puppets we call politicians, and the powers pulling their strings, not only know but rely on the ease with which the American people can be distracted from what’s really going on around them. And I can’t help but wonder if they might be reluctant to mandate we pay attention when we are driving, for fear we might start paying attention when we are not: In closing, I wish to thank motorcyclists’ rights activists and advocates Lynn Wesley, “Hairy George” Nitsky, Imre Sautzer and Greg Zaffke II (BlackNailBrigade.com) for their contributions to and inputs from the Summit. I also encourage all riders and freedom fighters to join Greg in Lake County Illinois this coming Thursday morning, October 8th, for his “Nail Polish Crash Awareness Ride and Protest” to coincide with the arraignment of Lora Hunt on six counts of reckless homicide: May justice be served... Speaking strictly for myself and no other individuals or organizations, Bruce Arnold Bruce@LdrLongDistanceRider.com Co-Moderator, Bruce-n-RC’s Biker Forum Author and Publisher, LdrLongDistanceRider.com Mile Eater Gold Member, Iron Butt Association (IBA) Sustaining Member, Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) 2009 Chairman’s Circle, American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Signatory, 911 Truth Statement & Petition (911Truth.org|ae911Truth.org) “If you willingly trade liberty for security, expect to be sheared in good times and slaughtered in bad. Such is the fate of the Sheeple. If on the contrary, you’d rather die on your feet than live on your knees, rise up now and join us in the struggle: The battle for bikers’ rights is not about patches, parties or poker runs. We fight to protect the freedom and promote the interests of American motorcyclists ... to defend our right to choose our own modes of transportation, attire and lifestyle ... to deter and defy discrimination against us ... and to vanquish those who violate our rights or right-of-way.”--Bruce Arnold

SA R OLEA 23S - 1928

Founded in 1898, Sarolea was one of the three great Belgian makes, along with FN and Minerva. After Germany’s occupation of Belgium in WWI ended, Sarolea resumed production in 1918 with modernized versions of its 1914 range. Sarolea offered a belt-driven 550cc machine, followed by 500 and 350cc models, all with side-valve engines and eventually secondary transmission by chain. Racing round the World At the Paris Salon in 1923, Sarolea unveiled a new top of the range model, a magnificent overhead valve 500cc single. Its finish was perfect: raven black enamel lined with gold. This fine motorcycle rode as well as it looked. It quickly became a favorite with riders, who raced the 23S in events the length of Europe, from Italy to Sweden, and some even further. Saroleas even raced in Japan, where at that time European motorcycles were very popular. Alphabet of Success The 23 Series was successfully produced in many models, all distinguished by a different letter of the alphabet. Between 1923 and 1928, Sarolea produced the 23G, K, N, M, P, R and S, the final in the series. These final versions used studs carrying the exposed overhead-valve gear to retain the cylinder head. This method was used from 1930 on all the firm’s overhead-valve models until the end of production of the machines around 1956.

STEVE’S ROADKILL CAFE

Caramel Apples ..............................................$6.66 1 cup butter 2 cups packed brown sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 2 teaspoons vanilla 8-10 wooden sticks 8-10 medium tart apples Chopped nuts

1.Wash and dry the apples, removing any stems. Insert a wooden stick into the end of each apple. 2. Combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and milk in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil for 30 to 40 minutes, or until syrup reaches 248 degrees (firm ball stage) on a candy thermometer. 3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Dip each apple into the caramel mixture, swirling to coat. 4. Spread chopped nuts of your choice on wax paper and roll apple through chopped nuts. Set apples on wax paper to cool completely before serving.

Spider Pretzels ..............................................$6.66 For each: 2 round crackers 2 teaspoons smooth peanut butter 8 small pretzel sticks 2 raisins

With the peanut butter, make a cracker sandwich. Insert eight pretzel “legs” into the filling. With a dab of peanut butter, set two raisin “eyes” on top. Watch them crawl across your plate and enjoy!

Pumpkin Bread ..................................................$6.66 INGREDIENTS: 2 packages active dry yeast 1/4 cup sugar 2 cups warm water 4 teaspoons salt 1/4 cup margarine, melted 6 1/2 cups bread flour Yellow, red, and green food coloring

1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Add the salt, margarine, and bread flour and combine. 2. Knead the dough on a floured tabletop, adding more flour if needed, until it is smooth and elastic but not sticky or soft. 3. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turn it over once, then cover with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise just until it has doubled in bulk (about 1 to 1 1/2 hours). 4. Punch down the dough. If you’re making one large pumpkin, remove a walnut-size ball of dough for the stem. Place the remaining dough smooth side down on the table. (If you’re making four small or two medium pumpkins, divide the dough accordingly and remove a piece for each stem.) 5. Shape each pumpkin by grasping the dough from the bottom, stretching it upward, and gathering it on the top. Repeat this process until you have a uniform ball. Then firmly pinch together the gathered dough in the center and turn over the ball. Now gently squeeze the middle of the pumpkin to make it stand as tall as possible. 6. Place the pumpkin on a parchment-paper-lined sheet pan. Grease one end of a toothpick and insert it into the dough stem so that it protrudes an inch from the top. Stick the other end into the pumpkin top. Then cover each pumpkin with plastic wrap and let it rise to twice its size. 7. Uncover the risen dough. Holding the stem, slowly twist the toothpick to loosen it but don’t remove it. 8. In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of water with 30 drops of yellow and 6 drops of red food coloring. Transfer a half teaspoon of the mixture to a small saucer and stir in a drop of green food coloring. 9. Use a small pastry brush to paint the stem green (the brush should not be too wet). Gently apply a coat of orange to the globe using a larger brush and long, soft strokes. Let the paint dry for about 2 minutes. 10. With a sharp knife, lightly score the dough to create the pumpkin’s vertical grooves (adults only). 11. Heat the oven to 375 degrees and bake the bread until its internal temperature is 190 degrees or it sounds hollow when you tap the crust (about 1 hour for a large loaf, 35 to 45 minutes for smaller ones). 12. Set the pumpkin on a cooling rack and twist the toothpick to remove it. If the crust seems soft, cool the bread OCTOBER 2009 completely, then bake it for another 5 to 10 minutes.

OCTOBER 2009

F&%^ing OCTOBER already. I know I was thinking the same thing. This year is flying by I mean it feels like yesterday the government F$#@ed us with the WALL STREET BAILOUT, WOW how making rich bastards even richer on our hard earned money. OK enough on that I’ll just get pissed off and I’m sure you will to. So hope everyone had a good time at the lake this article is a little premature before we go so bare with me I got a deadline to keep as I write this the weather is suppose to be awesome as I said I hope it is. Well we are getting to that time of the year again that’s right the RUT for all of you none hunters, it’s the breeding season for deer. You have to pay extra attention for those bastards the closer we get to the end of this month. They become unpredictable so you may see them anytime anywhere so you have to pay close attention when riding. It makes it even tougher for you to see them because lots of leaves are falling and the leaves are turning brown so it’s tough to pick them out. So when you’re out this FALL keep your eyes peeled. Another hazard you have to watch for in the FALL is acorns, and other nuts. That’s right not just the fruits from the trees but the NUTS behind the wheel as the leaves fall and cover the roads drivers can’t see the center lines… not that the lines mean anything . We all see vehicles in our lanes probably more than they are in there own lanes. Now add a wet surface and WHAM! the bikes slide, and the cars slide , and I think you know where I’m going with this, so let’s ride smart this FALL and make it a fun time of year instead of a tragedy. AS I’ve said before, I am proud to have been asked to write this article in what is becoming a very fine magazine. That said the folks that advertise and the people who read it and relay your thoughts back have helped it become one of the most sought out FREE magazines in the area. After all if nobody advertised and nobody read it we would have gone by the wayside . So thanks to everyone, I’m in my second year of writing this article and with your help and opinions GOOD OR BAD we can keep it going. HELL I’m a firm believer of free speech so even when I get criticized I appreciate your views.ws. Well I should say I touched some people in my last article about new riders in STURGIS , I got some pretty tough feedback in fact one person wrote on both of my E-mail addresses; I haven’t used one for a long time . So she did her homework and that impressed me that also means she is keeping old copies and that’s a good thing. She wants to know who made me, GOD and I have no right saying who should go and who shouldn’t and maybe she’s right I mean after all everyone has the right to do whatever they feel like. So I want to apologize for hurting anyone’s, feelings who I might have offended. She went on to say she agreed with me on my views on the helmet law as did some other folks and some disagreed , that’s why we live in a democracy. You see we’re all entitled to opinions. And you know what they say about OPINIONS. That’s right OPINIONS are like assholes everyone has one so here is my OPINION on me being GOD. I’m not GOD but I am an experienced rider for over twenty years not 6 months like you, and I’m not knocking you being a new rider because I welcome them all. I’m thinking you went to STURGIS but you didn’t say. So when you have riders who can’t turn on an incline into a pull off and you block both lanes and your husband or boyfriend is screaming at you and you’re crying. YOU HAVE NO F$%#ING BUSINESS BEING OUT THERE and you walk your bike around a turn cause you’re too scared to put your feet up, YOU HAVE NO F$%#ING BUSINESS BEING OUT THERE or you get off your bike to have someone park it on the gravel YOU HAVE NO F^%$ING BUSINESS BEING OUT THERE, bottom line I’m not GOD just a rider concerned about everyone’s safety and your STUPIDITY. Again I apologize if I pissed someone off, remember OPINIONS are like ASSHOLES maybe I’m being one now that’s all in the way you perceive what I’m saying. Well that’s all KEEP THE SHINEY SIDE UP AND THE RUBBER SIDE DOWN contact me at JAWSHERITAGE@ SBCGLOBAL.NET

Darren’s New Ride By Peter Schneider First I want to say I am super stoked about covering this bike. First this bike is a true “hot rod” with the weight of a sportster, but with one hundred and forty ponies at the flywheels, it’s guaranteed to rock your socks off. Second, the bike has a wicked urban street style to it. Finally, the story that goes along with this bike is bad ass.

Approximately two years ago Darren began collecting parts for this bike. This started with a bike that was involved in a fire that was given to Darren by a friend. Next was a brand new power house 114c.i. motor, which through an interesting set of events he ended up getting for a grand total of 0 yen. The rest of his parts were acquired mostly through donations, or just shit he had lying around the shop that he modified to fit the look of the bike. This just goes to show if u know the right people and you do the right thing good things will come your way. While most people buy parts out of a catalog and just bolt them on Darren knew to get the look he was going for with this bike bolt on parts just weren’t going to cut it. Most people, who know Darren Williams of Liquid Illusions, know him only for his beautiful paint work. However throughout this project, his metal art skills can be clearly seen. Starting with a gas tank that when acquired was 6 inches wider, had a stock petcock location and a different gas cap location. Next the rear fender which started off as a “Led Sled Customs” blank that was narrowed and side cut to get the proper look. Other items include, : handmade set of handlebars, modify and engine turned primary backing plate, custom fender strut, an independent skateboard truck as a seat mount, and modified machined wheels, just to name a few.

To end this article I will say Darren, being the amazing painter he is not quite done with this bike. Although the paint is already a custom blend of house of color paints and flake, u may not ever see this bike like this again. Next time it is on the street it will be sporting a set of wicked graphics to really put this rad machine over the top. Special thanks to: Dallas Roberts of Deep Impact Skateboards

Jo Ann Kargus has been a commercial artist in St. Louis for over 25 years. Her company, Whitesitt Kargus Studio, specializes in architectural renderings, but her passion is painting portraits of people’s motorcycles. “I love to paint motorcycles because I love all the reflections in the metal

surfaces and getting every detail perfect.” says Jo Ann Jo Ann works in pencil, watercolor, acrylic or airbrush to create photorealistic paintings. “A custom portrait is special for each owner- either to keep or to give as a gift. People love their bikes” Jo Ann’s prices range from $300 to $3,000

I attend several tattoo conventions a year. People often ask what is a tattoo convention? A tattoo convention is simply a meeting and exhibition for tattoo artist and enthusiast, as well as anyone who wishes to see the world of tattooing up close. Tattoo conventions range from small events to major international conventions and typically span over 3 days on the weekend. They usually

include contests, exhibitions and venders selling tattoo related items. Tattoo collectors often attend to get tattooed by a visiting artist. As always, my deadline for this article has crept up on me, and I’m actually writing this on my way back to NY from attending the 5th annual London Tattoo Convention. This is one of a handful of quality conventions that I obligate myself to every year. Attracting more than 250 artists from around the world, this convention has evolved into an international cultural event. The location is Tobacco Dock an enormous Victorian building built in 1812 that served as a store for imported tobacco. The beautiful Victorian architecture provides an amazing venue for over 20,000 thousand visitors to enjoy. A true city within a city atmosphere! Several art exhibits included work from attending artists as well as live painting from The Graffiti Kings, a well-known and respected graffiti crew. The convention also offered an exhibit for tattoo historians. The Oxford British Tattoo History Museum displayed documents, equipment and photos from early tattoo culture. Sabina Kelley, a modern pin-up icon and burlesque dancer, was turning heads with her retro beauty. The enter-

tainment also included burlesque performances from Scarlett Daggers, she combines burlesque, theater and pop art in her show. In another exhibit the Hells Angels had bikes and memorabilia on display in celebration of the London Chapter’s 40th year. The Big Red Machine, of course, did a great job keeping the masses in line. Tattoo conventions have now become a common occurrence around the world, with plenty to choose from on any given weekend. This convention was an extremely well run, organized and executed event. It is a perfect example of what a tattoo event should be. Some of the best conventions are Ink-N-Iron in Long Beach, the Milan Convention in Italy, the NYC Tattoo Convention and I have recently accepted an invitation to attend the Singapore Tattoo Expo in January. The myth is that it’s the city in which it is held that makes or breaks a successful convention. While this might play a part, my belief is that the organizers are more responsible for the success. Unfortunately, previous tattoo conventions that have been hosted in St Louis have fallen victim to outside promoters, people that are motivated only by financial gain and not for the culture and progression of the art and industry. It frustrates me to no end that GREED has been the recipe for failed tattoo conventions in this city. If the right mix of art and culture come together, I can see an event as colorful and interesting as The London Tattoo Convention happening in St Louis. Keep your eyes open for a Full Throttle/Brad Fink collaboration.

Full Throttle Book Review THE QUOTABLE DOUCHEBAG A Treasury of Spectacularly Stupid Remarks! Did He Really Just Say That?!? DOUCHEBAGS HAVE A GIFT for speaking the unspeakable. Vain, arrogant, and clueless, they’re the worst the male species has to offer- and now their most outlandish statements have been compiled into a single volume. The Quotable Douchebag features dozens of bone-headed and tasteless remarks from actors, musicians, athletes, and politicians, including: “You mean, like a book?” -Justin Timberlake, in response to a Rolling Stone interviewer’s question: “What was the best thing you’ve read all year?” “I’m the Hiroshima of love.” –Sylvester Stallone “I think Gay Marriage is something that should be between a MAN and a WOMAN.” –Arnold Schwarzenegger This book has gotten it right. “We’re here to party!!!” a phrase that best describes the Soy City Stranglers. They’ve been bringing their brand of “Good Time Rock n Roll” to the table for only a year now and have already been turning heads and building a rabid fan base with every show they play. In such a short time the Stranglers have already graced the stage with the likes of the Casualties, the Koffin Kats, River City Rebels, FBS, Pound for Pound and Agent Orange. Hailing from Decatur, IL the Soy City Stranglers are a slap in the face compared to the Midwest metal scene that surrounds them. Having a sound that mixes sing-a-long hooks and teeth kicking punk rock melodies, it’s easy to see why they have carved their own path in the sea of corn that surrounds them. With a self titled album out this October and an EP to be released by the end of the year, the Stranglers show no signs of backing down. CONTACT INFO: WWW. MYSPACE.COM/SOYCITYSTRANGLERS

Since 2003 (or somewhere thereabouts), The Blameshifters have quickly been spreading their message of political dissent and social justice all across California. Whether playing alongside bands such as Social Unrest, Agent Orange, or The Dickies, audiences say, “You can never get enough of their good old fashioned melodic speed punk”. Known as one of the most reliable bands in the northern California punk scene, they put the punk in punctual... Ever since their debut album “Feast Before the Famine” was independently recorded and released in 2005, this class act of retards has been mixing up harmonies and speed with socratically ironic, politically charged lyrics for anyone who wants to hear it (even some who don’t). The Blameshifters, being the ardent DIY band they are, again independently recorded and released their second album, “Disenfranchised Anarchist” in late 2007. What many people call the best DIY production they’ve ever heard, “Disenfranchised Anarchist” is comprised of 15 energetic songs filled to the brim with truth and sarcasm. CONTACT INFO: WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THEBLAMESHIFTERS

We are the Battle Drinkers centered around Cronulla on Sydney’s southern coastline in Australia. We play the stuff we grew up with as teenagers and have lived by for a few decades, old school punk rock & roll and hardcore with some metal edges. Cool thing here in Cronulla is there are lots of bands from 10 years ago getting back together and loads of brilliant old school hardcore bands coming back and blowing the younger bands off the stage. To the first time visitor, come in January to March - stinking hot days, nice icy-cold beers and that’s when the music scene tends to peak. We don’t play full time these days because our kids and surfing keep us busy but hey -, punk’s not dead! You can find us on MySpace and if you dig any of our songs we can send you some mp3’s to chuck on your iPods! CONTACT INFO: WWW.MYSPACE.COM/BATTLEDRINKERS

LAKE OF THE OZARKS BIKE FEST 2009

I was told by a good friend that to throw a good party u need alcohol, food, and music. Well, what do u call it when u have over 20 different venues in a town with all of the above? Then add about 20,000 motorcyclists to all that partying. Finally add a chance to win a brand new Harley while riding on some of the nicest roads to ride in the Midwest. Well that my friends, was Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest. There were all sorts of things going on, vendor village with vendors like: Big dog Motorcycles, Rivco, Can-am Spyders, Billy the Kid Custom Cycles, Liquid Illusions, Cutting Edges Cycles, and many more. Next door to that was the Horny Toad which threw some great concerts, including Head East, and Edge of Forever, and Eliminator. There was between 1,200 to 1,600 bikes at any given time at the local Harley dealer. Last but not least there were organized rides all weekend to go on. The Full Throttle Passport Run was a huge success. It only cost $15 for the opportunity to win a brand new 2009 Streetbob from Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davidson. Plus the opportunity to see all the lake has to offer business, and scenery. There were 10 prizes over all for the completion of the passport run, 9 runnerups and the previously mentioned grand prize.

r e n n i W n u R t r o P s Pas KEITH HOLZKOPF THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER: Keith Holzkopf of Huntsville, MO.

THE RUNNER’S UP INCLUDE:

#10- Tim Duncan- Holt’s Summit MO # 9 - Weaver Crew- Osage Beach MO # 8- Richard Walker- St. Peters MO # 7- Jason Abercrombie- St. Louis MO # 6- Ted Schuttenberg- Union MO # 5- Karen Crowley- St. Louis MO # 4- Carly Butts- Westphalia MO # 3- Curt Bahr- Lake Ozark MO # 2 - Dan Heitmann- St. Louis MO All In all it was a huge success, the weather was absolutely gorgeous. The businesses and vendors did great. Last, but most important, all the feedback from the riders was they were stoked about being there and being a part of the event. Next year we will be throwing the 4th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest: Sept. 16th-19th 2010. If u did not get a chance to make it this year, don’t miss out. New features next year will include mini bike races, skateboard demos by Deep Impact Skate Team, and many new bike builders from all over. Also we are now taking reservations for vendor spots for next year. If you own a business and want to be a part of this exciting event reserve your spot now, before it’s too late! OCTOBER 2009

The weekend of September 11th the Full Throttle Road Crew headed to Kansas City MO for the Harley-Davidson Factory two day Open House. The Full Throttle Army had been personally invited to be a part of a “true Harley enthusiasts dream” for the weekend. The 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, was really a spectacular site, with the entire parking lot full of vendors, people, and bikes. There was a motorcycle stunt show by Illconduct, a kids play area also known as the “Pig Pen”, live music and the star of the show, the Harley-Davidson 2010 Motorcycle Demos. Everyone here at Full Throttle is excited to attend next year’s event! Stay tuned for next year’s dates. Or visit www.fullboarkc.com for updates.

Hope everyone had a great September! Lots of great rides and events took place and Tracy and I had a blast covering them as usual. I was really surprised at all the people we saw at Bike Fest who knew who Tracy and myself were, and came up to talk. We met people from as far away as Iowa! Thanks so much to all of you for the thumbs up. The feedback we have gotten this month on “The Wall” and “Bikers Save Lives” was awesome. To all the Veterans, it was our honor to salute you all. Several of you already know this but Tracy and I started a photo page early in the year and have been posting the photos we take on rides and events to our site. It’s impossible for us to get everyone in the Magazine, so we have now made it possible for anyone to not only see the pics we take, but download them for yourself! So far, it’s been a huge success! Just go to www.jerryandtracy.shutterfly.com If you sign up as a member you will get notified weekly of new posts as well as upcoming events from our calendar. Feel free to write in our guestbook as well. It’s a totally free site too. Hey, mark this one down people! On Oct 24th, Full Throttle Magazine, Thunder Roads, and K-SHE95 are the media sponsors for Shady Jacks Bi-State Biker Bash II. If you haven’t been to Shady Jacks NOW is the time! Make sure you come by and visit the 2 best Magazines in the Midwest! Our role in FTM has gotten even bigger now, and we have already started gearing up. 2010 is gonna be huge! Be ready!

Keep the wind is your face, and enjoy the ride!

Stripped Down Cycles By Peter Schneider

Over that past few months I have had the opportunity to meet some extremely talented builders. All of these builders seem to have a truly original style. Taking old school technology but adding cleaner fabrication techniques and style these bikes are truly one of a kind. Grimey, A.K.A. Rod Davis is no exception to this at all. Grimey got into motorcycling at a very young age. Riding and wrenching on dirt bikes through his childhood, motorcycling has been something that has been in his blood for years. After high school Grimey attended MMI in Orlando, FL. After college Grimey had a few jobs working at local repair shops and dealers. Within a few years he realized that his full potential as a builder could not be reached working in this environment, thus inspired him to open up, “Stripped Down Cycles”. Stripped Down Cycles started about three years ago in Dubois, IL. Grimey is a factory trained technician who has the capability to work on any American v-twin or british bike, however old skool’ is definitely his preference. Grimey would much rather start a project with a shovel or pan then an evo or twin cam.

Despite his young age Grimey has achieved many accomplishments that most builders will never achieve in their lifetimes. His first time entering, “The Horse Smoke Out” he won. Second year he entered he won the editors choice award. Third year, yep you guessed it, he won again. Grimey also had his most recent smoke out winner on stage at the broken spoke saloon at Sturgis 69, and is a part of the, “Cycle Source” next generation of up and coming builders. Recently Grimey has refocused his efforts as a builder. When he first opened up Stripped Down Cycles he would do anything building or maintenance wise on your bike. He has since then gotten enough work to now focus on one off customs, full service machine shop work, motor and tranny work, and he will soon be coming out with his own parts line. So if you are looking for a , “one off” custom bike or just need machine work done on your shovel or pan, Grimey is the man to talk to. As for us here at Full Throttle, we are super stoked to see what he comes out with next, and we will keep our readers updated with new bikes and parts that he turns out in the near future.

The FSMDA Rodeo was held on August 15th. It was a hot day filled with great times for everyone who attended. Several vendors such as Vinyl Images, Dr. Johns and Wingdancer CDS Inc, just to name a few were in attendance as well. The Free Spirits put on this rodeo every year in an effort to help raise money for the MDA. The Saddle Tramps, Road Saints, El Forastero’s, Tribe of Judah and Statesmen were also there in support of this great cause. Several events were held through the day with Trophies given to the winners. It was a blast being in the events and equally fun to watch, as riders competed in events such as the weinie bite, boot race, bucket race and more. After the events it was time for Southside 5 to rock the house and they did exactly that! Not only was it a great time but the Free Spirits raised $2650 for the MDA. Great job guys and we cant wait till next year! Jerry and Tracy

While wandering around Sharkys in Collinsville Ill, someone came up to us and asked us if we would like to come outside and meet someone. I had no idea I was going to be meeting someone with such an amazing story to be told. His name is Chris “Gunner” Fleming. A United States Marine of 8 years. He was sitting on a Trike out front when we met him and his wife Erika. Just shy of 3 months earlier, Gunner lost both legs from below the knees to an IED while working for a private security company in Afghanistan. We visited Gunner at his mother’s Collinsville home to hear more about his story. Gunner has a passion for motorcycles, and he showed us his bike. Its a VERY cool custom build with a 90 EVO and shovelhead tranny mounted on a Kraftech frame. Unfortunatly, he has to sell it due to his injury, but he plans on getting a Trike to replace it so he can still ride.

“Gunner”: A Survivor’s Story On June 26, while in Afghanistan Gunner was a passenger in a pick-up driven by his friend Dan. They were on their way from their compound to an Army base to pick up a VIP. In a vehicle in front of them, were friends Red and Tweaker. They were only 2-5 mins from the facility when they hit an IED, spinning their truck 180 degrees. Dan, the driver crawled out and was immediately blinded by his own blood due to a very serious head injury. Still, as injured as he was, he still managed to take a rifle and get into a defensive position while Red and Tweaker stopped and rushed to their friends’ aid. They pulled an unconscious Gunner from what was left of the truck, his legs on fire. Gunner’s 3 friends took a defensive stance and prepared for a secondary bomb, or sniper attack. They tended to Dan and Gunner, who was now conscious and in unbearable pain. Without the fast action of his friends, Gunner and Dan would not be here today. Gunner is fast to credit Tweaker and Red for saving his and Dan’s lives. Very soon after, a helicopter arrived and the two very seriously wounded friends were evacuated. The helicopter took Gunner to Jalalabad (J-Bad) Army base. Gunner actually died on the helicopter for a short time due to over medication. His left leg was taken off while at J-Bad and a few days later he was taken to Bagram Air Base, and then to Germany where his wife and sisters were waiting. Gunner and his wife Erika celebrated a 4 year anniversary and were remarried while in Germany. The security firm Gunner worked for spent around $93,000

for a private air ambulance, staffed with a trauma nurse and a pulmonologist to get him to Barnes here in St. Louis. The force of the bomb had turned the bones in Gunner’s right leg literally into sand, so it had to be removed at Barnes. He then spent 10 days in rehab.

I asked Gunner if he was bitter in any way and what his out look on all this was. He said, “Not bitter at all, a lot of guys out there are worse off than me. I’m lucky, really lucky. I have the best friends, family, and neighbors period. My wife Erika, mother Pat, sons Austin and Hunter Lee, and sister Kelly were and will continue to be instrumental in my recovery. I don’t know what I’d have done without them. I feel like this has been harder on my wife, than it has on me.” If you are interested in Gunner’s bike you can email him at cpfleming@yahoo.com It was a true honor to have met Gunner, and to be given the chance to tell his story. We look forward to seeing him on the road and riding with him!

MARK CONNER This month we entered the top secret custom rod and bike shop of Mark Conner on the industrial side of North St. Louis. You can find him chopping tops and slamming kick ass rat rods out the door. Like the one you see shown here.

OCTOBER 2009

This summer was a big year for Bike Nights. They were everywhere! When Hooters came to FTM and asked us to head up a bike night, naturally we were excited. I mean, come on, its HOOTERS! Of the 3 locations, Tracy and myself were assigned to Fairview Hts. Illinois. Now, walking into a business and trying to tell the managers how things need to go, can sometimes cause problems right off the bat. From our experience this summer, I can honestly say we were blessed to have worked side by side with the management and staff of Fairview Hts Hooters. Manager Mark Murphy was fantastic and took on Bike Nights Full Throttle! We gave our ideas, he added his own, along with the most beautiful and friendliest Hooters Girls ANYWHERE, and Bike Nights rocked! It wasn’t long before our crowd grew, and before long we even had a stunt bike show by some killer sport bike riders. We had bounce houses for kids at times, The Thunder Alley Burnout Trailer, a KSHE Night complete with the great Katy Kruze, Vendors, 50/50, a great DJ, and the list goes on. We were visited by some great people such as The Booze Fighters, B.A.C.A., and Bikers Against Diabetes. But as we all know, it takes riders to make a bike night really happen. That’s why the final Hooters Bike Night was dedicated to thanking all of you for your support. Free burgers and hotdogs, a load of iced down beer and lots of giveaways made for a great night. They even set up a printer so you could take home the pics taken of The Hooters Girls with you and your bike. They printed so many it ran out of ink, so Tracy and I took on the task of getting emails, and sending the pics out. The sport bike riders, as always, put on a great show, and held “Slow Drags” for prizes such as free wings. As always, our good friend Raif was on hand with great music for all. Everyone really had a great time. Our Fridays are going to feel a little odd now without seeing all of the great people who supported us. Hopefully, we added some great memories to your summer. We know you all did to ours. On behalf of manager Mark Murphy, all of the Fairview Hts Hooters Girls, KSHE-95, and of course Full Throttle Magazine, Thank you, and see ya’s next year!!

North America announced today that avid motorcyclist, Sex Pistols guitarist, and host of LA radio’s beloved “Jonesey’s Jukebox” Steve Jones, has taken delivery of a new customized Hypermotard S at Ducati headquarters. Known for his genre defining music and straight talk, Jones recently expanded his bike collection to include the rambunctious Ducati Hypermotard S due to its aggressive styling and exceptional fun factor. Steve had been eyeing the model since first riding one at Ducati North America headquarters earlier this Spring. He bought the motorcycle to celebrate his return to the Los Angeles airwaves this fall. I’ve always admired Ducati from a distance but never found something that suits me. That all changed after that first ride on the Hypermotard. I knew I had to have her. All my mates are jealous- and that suits me just fine!” Residing in a perfect motorcycle hot spot, Jones can be found carving his Hypermotard S along Southern California’s coast and canyons. www.ducatiusa.com

The world of motocross had better look out, because here comes Clayton John Adams! One of only 40 racers in his age group to qualify to compete in the National finals held August 1-8 at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch and Campgrounds outside of Nashville Tennessee. Oh, and by the way, he did this at 6 years old!! A win at this event can be a doorway to a lucrative career in the motocross pros. Pros like James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael and Travis Pastrana have all won AMA championships at this venue. Out of 20,000 racers in 33 classes, only 1,386 advance to these finals. 6 year old Clayton Adams was one of those when he jumped on his 50cc bike and began his Full Throttle journey around the track. Now, how did Clayton do at the Nationals? Well, he celebrated his 7th birthday there. Oh, and he placed 8th in the NATION in his age bracket! Now that’s impressive! Clayton started racing at the age of 3 and has filled his room with 60-70 trophies. He practices everyday on a track in his grandparents’ back yard in Ofallon Illinois and has full family support. We asked Clayton if he had a good luck charm and he wasted no time in saying “my mom”. We have no doubt we will be seeing more of this little motocross master in the future. Not only does he show a true passion for the sport of Motocross, but he possesses the talent to take him right to the top. Congrats on your success Clayton John Adams. You’re one impressive kid!
