It’s really an amazing thing to see sociology in real life. To see how people who share common interests, from all walks of life, are brought together solely because they share a hobby, a thought process, a goal, or an understanding. With the biking community, you find just that exactly. A common bond among random people, that all seem to share that same love. You’ll never see this more than you do at a springtime event, and the months of April & May promise many events where you’ll see the entire culture gather to soak in some warm weather and enjoy each others company. Be sure not to miss Frieze Harley Davidson’s 15th Annual Cancer Ride on May 16th. It’s a great time for a good cause. Visit www.FriezeHarley-Davidson.com for more info.

Understanding rake and trail can go a long way toward making your chopper handle the way you want it to. To understand rake, visualize the steering axis as an imaginary line at the same angle as the neck of the frame running all the way to the ground. The rake angle is measured between the steering axis and a vertical line at the frame neck. For this discussion, the point where the steering axis intersects the ground will be called the trail contact point. A common misconception is that rake is the only consideration in chopper handling, but trail is equally important. Increased rakes damage handling only because they increase trail if no steps are taken to correct it. Trail is the distance between the trail contact point and the point where the front tire contacts the ground. Smaller trail allows for quick response on sharp turns, while larger trails allow for greater stability at high speeds. Choppers with greater than seven inches of trail become difficult to lift off the kickstand and tend to dangerously flop toward the inside of turns when cornering. Manipulating trail is the key to getting safe and responsive handling with the classic look of a long, raked out chopper. The most popular way to manipulate trail is with a
12

raked triple tree. Traditional triple trees leave the front end parallel to the steering axis, but raked triple trees put two to five degrees of angle between the front end and the steering axis. This reduces trail by moving the tire contact point forward, closer to the trail contact point. Using a smaller front wheel and longer front end also reduces trail. Flame cut girders manipulate trail with a small section near the axle that is curved forward to move the wheel closer to the trail contact point. Springer front ends can manipulate trail through different rocker shapes which allow the wheel to sit higher inside the front end. This has the same trail-reducing effect as running a smaller wheel, and it also allows more room to use a long front end if that is the desired look. It is important to remember that the advertised rake of a frame only holds true if the frame is level (bottom frame rails are parallel to level ground). Anything that raises the front of your bike such as a longer front end or larger front wheel will make the frame not level and increase the rake. This can lead to a cat chasing his tail effect if not accounted for with front end length or rocker shape.

Thursday, March 4th marked the kickoff of 105.7 The Point and Big St. Charles Motorsports Calendar Girl Contest. Like all the events put on by Big St. Charles, this one was done extremely well with free admission, food (free wings) and drinks catered by "Hot Shots", Burnout Pit Comp (winner gets new tire), and live music and DJ. Aside from the huge assortment of bikes already on the floor at Big St Charles, Quick Time Motors also had some sick machines on display. And last but not least, the shows emcee was Jeff Burton himself from 105.7s "Thom and Jeff Show". The event will continue to run on the first Thursday of each month through August 5th from 6 to 9pm. They are looking for 12 of the hottest ladies in the St. Louis area to appear in The 2011 Big St. Charles Motorsports Calendar Girl calendar with the grand prize winner getting some great prizes including a 2010 Kawasaki Ninja 250, and the cover girl spot of the calendar. The ladies are judged in categories like Night Club, Biker, and Bikini apparel. Calendars will be sold for $3 starting Dec. 1st, 2010 and only at Big St. Charles. All calendar proceeds will go to the CCFA, a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to finding a cure for Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. Tracy and I will be there so feel free to come up and say "Hey" and if you have any cool tattoos, we wanna see them! We just may put them in the mag! So come out and join the crowd at Big St. Charles and root on your favorite calendar girl. Your gonna have a great time if ya do! Jerry and Tracy

FRIEZE HARLEY DAVIDSON’S
ANNUAL CANCER RIDE:
RUSS FRIEZE & DOC ROD
BY DOC ROD While I was out riding with another doctor, over 15 years ago, we were discussing all of the different benefit rides in the area. Since I was already on the American Cancer Society Board, I thought what better thing to do than to have a Cancer Benefit Ride. However, I knew I needed help getting this ride together and that’s when I thought who better than Russ Frieze to help me out on this great venture. We both thought it was a great collaboration and brought the Belleville HOG Chapter (aka: The Stone Celts HOG Chapter) in for additional help. It was the morning of May 14th and it was pouring down rain. However, Russ Frieze and I weren’t going to let the rain stop us. We had 35 riders that day and raised $3,500 and thought that was a huge success! Since that rainy day back in 1995, the Frieze family and I knew that we would keep this tradition going on for years to come. It has now been 15 years since our first Cancer Benefit Ride and we have raised over $270,000. We have donated 100% of our profits from each ride. From 1995-2005, our donations went to the American Cancer Society and for the last four years we have donated to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In these 15 years, we have seen a decrease in many forms of cancer. We have seen prolonged survivals. Overall, people diagnosed with cancer are living longer with a better quality of life. All of this goes to show us that our hard work is making a positive change in many people’s lives. We have had support from multiple organizations and individuals who have been with us throughout these last 15 years. Without their support, we couldn’t have gone this far. Illinois Oncology, Frieze Harley-Davidson and The Stone Celts HOG Chapter are committed to making our 15th Annual Cancer Benefit Ride even better than the last. Through the generosity of others and the biker community we can continue to make this dream a reality! Pre-registration for the 15th Annual Cancer Ride on May 16th is now open. Ride over to Frieze H-D to sign up and help continue the fight against cancer. Purchase this year’s awesome Raffle Tickets! The Grand Prize is a four Night Trip to Riu Palace Macao in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. We are also selling commemorative 15th Anniversary Bikers Against Cancer patches for only $5.00 (Quantities are limited). We would like to thank everyone for all of your support throughout the years and look forward to seeing you at this years ride, Sunday May 16th! “SOME LIVE TO RIDE … SOME RIDE SO OTHERS CAN LIVE” For information on the 15th Annual Cancer Ride please visit

BY RON STRATMAN WITH ART GOMPPER Daytona is the annual rite of spring for motorcyclists and it’s an event I’ve been to a few times. I like to visit but it’s always a hassle fighting the crowds and paying double for just about everything during bike week. Still, it’s Daytona and after a long, cold and snowy winter, the call of sun and surf was just too much to resist.
As luck would have it, some good friends were planning to escape the cold and head south as well. A few Raltney Brothers, A Missouri Mule, some Uglies and Muskego Go Devils made up our group of 8. We planned to meet up in Apalachicola and spend a couple of days riding around Florida and seeing some sights before hitting the beach with the rest of the crowd. Our trip
w o u l d start in Dothan, Alabama at our good friend Dutch Holland’s Harley-Davidson dealership. Dutch runs a great shop and he’s just down the road from Dobb’s Barbeque – the oldest in Dothan and the best! Apalachicola is the Oyster capital of the U.S. and boasts a large oyster fleet and some of the best fresh seafood around. The town itself dates back to the early 1800s and is steeped in history. The main street is packed with shops and eateries and there is a park down by the docks where you can see some of the shrimpers. We spent a day riding around St. George Island and the Apalachicola National Forest. It wasn’t sunny and 70 but one out of two ain’t bad and it sure felt good to be back on a bike and out of the winter doldrums. We headed through the forest and wound up in Bristol at the Apalachee for lunch. Noice joint with a great buffet! If you like sweet tea, fried chicken, catfish and peach cobbler, this place is for you. You will probably be the only out-of-towner but the locals are very friendly and know where to find good food! We completed our loop heading down hwy 20 and then South on hwy 71 to Apalachicola. Nice ride on some really scenic roads. As we pulled into the motel parking lot, our friends from Milwaukee were just unloading their bikes. Good timing. We checked in and made plans for dinner at the Gibson Inn. Dinner was great with fresh local seafood taking up the lion’s share of the menu. Cool old wood-framed Inn and the Café Momi is a nice restaurant in the Inn featuring the creations of Chef Michael Feil. Worth the stop if you’re in the area. Morning breakfast at Caroline’s and we were on our way, headed for Crystal River and the Manatees. Manatees are prehistoric looking creatures, often called
30
APRIL 2010
sea cows. They’re like a cross between a sea lion and a hippo! This area is scuba diver paradise. Manatees can’t survive in cold water and the head waters in the area are always around 70 degrees. Boat tours and dive trips are offered all over the area. Unfortunately, the high 40’s air temperatures didn’t make a boat trip sound too inviting. We watched a couple of dive boats come in and heard the divers describing how their brains were frozen and decided that a snack and a couple of beers at Crackers was a better idea. I would definitely come back to swim with the manatees when the temps warmed up. We wandered over to Harley-Davidson of Crystal River to check out their shop and Warren Hill, the general m a n a g e r, gave us t h e V.I.P. tour. We picked up some manatee t-shirts which was almost as good as swimming with them. Warren and his staff have a great shop there and it was good to catch up. From Crystal River to Daytona is nearly a straight shot across highway 40 but we made it interesting
with a stop just outside of Orlando to take in the AHDRA Florida Bike Week Nationals. Top Fuel drag racing is a real experience. When you get a full pass with both fuelers fighting for the win, the sound waves rattle your body like nothing else and it’s all over in a few seconds with speeds eclipsing 225mph. If that doesn’t get you pumped, you need to check your pulse. Strangely, the racing was delayed for nearly a half hour when an armadillo wandered onto the track and couldn’t be persuaded to leave. Finally, the track ambulance and a crew of 5-6 other officials managed to encourage the armored creature to find a new place to play and racing resumed. Craig Tharpe and the AHDRA crew always seem to make it interesting. Satisfied with an afternoon of nitro burning and smoking tires, we saddled up and headed for Daytona. I’m always excited to roll into Daytona. There are so many places I love to visit when I’m there and friends to catch up with that the week seems to fly by. This year was no exception and there were so many new things to check out that some of the favorites would have to wait. Sadly, one of my favorite lunch spots, Sorrento’s Italian Deli just across from the speedway was closed. This place was a classic family business and frequented by race teams and bench racers. They have another spot down on hwy 1 which is still open so I had to stop in for a Sorrento’s special. Great Sammy! The new short track at the speedway was pretty nice with some great action. Standing at the top of the bleachers, you could actually watch qualifying on the speedway. It was like a bad tennis match with all the head turning from dirt to road but very entertaining and very cold! When the fans in the stands are wearing helmets to stay warm, you know it’s not springtime in Daytona yet. I can’t remember when I had to wear long johns for 3 or 4 days in Florida. Even the Florida cold couldn’t keep the crowds down. Cabin fever and a mild recovery in the economy saw throngs of motorcyclists return to Daytona in force. I’m not sure what the official count was but Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona sure was hopping along with almost every other spot we checked out. Motorcycling is alive and well in twenty ten and it sure feels good.

THE LOOSE SKREWS
When you pick up a copy of “For Those Hearts True”, the fourth MARIETTA, GEORGIA CD from Marietta Georgia’s The Loose Skrews, you are holding a combined 72 years worth of punk rock in your hands. And you will not be disappointed. The Loose Skrews were founded in 2003 by Rotger Rotgut (vocals) and Jon B (bass). The addition of Clay (lead guitar), Hooper (rhythm guitar) and Gabe (drums) has made the band a solid and formidable force to be reckoned with. The Loose Skrews like to refer to their music as “step on your neck” core. Relentless and destructive, not only to themselves but to any stage they approach, The Loose Skrews are as close as you can get to the golden days of 1980’s punk in the present sense. The Loose Skrews have been kicked off record labels and out of hipster venues and will continue to do everything their way, DIY or die. The music of The Loose Skrews contains elements of everything under the punk spectrum, no rules. We don’t care if what we do ever catches on and after seven years, we’re poorer than when we started. We’re not trying to win a popularity contest or get signed to some BS puppetmaster label - we’re doing this coz we don’t have anything else we’re good at, plain and simple, this is what we do, we are The Loose Skrews. Chappy has been drawing and painting for as long as he can remember. Art being the only thing that he really enjoyed in school, he realized early on that he HAD to do something with it. By the age of 16, he says that tattooing was the only thing that he really wanted to do. Taking advantage of an opportunity to study art and language in Italy, Josh would hone his skills in painting and composition which would later prove to be an asset in his tattoo work. Shortly after returning to Madison from Italy, Josh was in the right place at the right time when he was offered an apprenticeship by Rob Beyer. Of course he jumped at the chance. Now, going on his 15th year in the business, he hasn’t looked back. Josh notices that attitudes about tattooing have changed dramatically since his inception into the biz. “It seemed like a lot more of a dangerous thing when I startedâ€? Starting out several years back, and being he had 20 plus years experience with selling automotive parts, Kevin focused on custom parts for motorcycles. He had a lot of insight on how things worked. Being new guy in the game, it was too hard to compete with the big boys, who were selling direct to the public at cut-throat pricing. In this process he was razzed by friends and co-workers and even caught smirks on their faces when people would ask him “where are your bikes?” It was time to either put up or shut up. Starting with nothing and no backing, he scraped by working nights and weekends painting cars, trucks, etc. all to finance his first project bike, known as “Cold Hard Bitch”. This awesome bike shows proudly on his home page. As a builder, Kevin takes his projects from start to finish. He believes he can survive in this industry by keeping overhead down. He does this by being the fab guy, welder, and painter. You name it, he does it. Very little work is subbed out. By this stage of the game, and six plus bikes later, you may want to take this guy a little bit more seriously. Today if you ask his advice for anyone wanting to enter this crazy business, he will tell you to believe in yourself and who gives a fuck what others think. Be creative and keep it real. As you can tell by now, Kevin is not a big chrome and candy guy, not that there is anything wrong with that. He favors the matted paints and brushed aluminum, which creates more of an industrial look. Kevin's flavor stands strong on the industrial/ vintage look, which is obvious when you see his latest project, the “Budtracker”. If you ask him why a Budweiser bike, he will tell you, "I've seen a lot of

Bud bikes but none I thought did the King of Beers justice.” He is already thinking about his next build – maybe a Bud Light bike to stand next to its big brother. It's easy to see Kevin likes to keep a simple, clean line to all his bikes, which he believes simplicity is everything. The "Budtracker" is a one off, hand made, piece of art with countless man hours in the making. If you ask Kevin is there is a future in the custom bike building world, he will tell you..."I'm not sure, but this is my passion and I will see where this road takes me." If you would like to see more of his builds, you can visit his website at www.billythekidcustomcycles.com There are not enough thanks Kevin can give his posse, Randy Gross and Kim Womack. Randy’s great at keeping the name alive and well on the street and at events with his 50’s style kick-ass bobber. Kim Womack’s great at making all his bikes look even hotter – you can bet posters of Kim on his bikes are hanging on countless garage walls.

FTM Bi-State Area Sales Managers Well, we told you 2010 would be the year of FTM. Interest in FTM is through the roof, and the compliments just keep coming in. Man this is awesome, and you all freakin rock!! Its feedback like this that fuels the hearts of the Full Throttle Army, and drives us to be the best. Our advertisers tell us we are the first of the Magazines to go from the racks, and the ones people come in and ask for. Riding season is here and it’s time for the Full Throttle Army to go full tilt boogie! Thursday, April 15th is the kick off of “Hot Summer Bike Nights” at The Pasta House in Fairview Heights Illinois. The interest in the bike night is huge and it will set a new standard for bike nights. For example, on the last Thursday of every month Tracy and I will be giving one lucky person a $100.00 Frieze Harley Davidson gift card! Come out and find out how you could be that person! Our April centerfold model: Kasey will be on site to sign FTM Mags, and if you ask really nice, she may pose for a pic with ya! April 23rd kicks off our Hooters Bike Nights in Fairview Heights, Ill. If you thought last year was good, come out and see what’s going on this year! Its gonna be GREAT!! Last month Tracy and I took a drive to Effingham Illinois, and one stop was Legacy Harley Davidson. Talk about a cool place! They were having their chili cook off and beer tasting event and we met some truly great people. The staff was awesome, and we were given a tour of the grounds. They are holding their Birthday Bash on June 19th and we can’t wait to go! More on Legacy HD, as well as the entire Effingham area to come! Don’t forget to come out to the Thunder Ally Swap meet on April 11th at the BelleClair fairgrounds. Tracy and I will be there doing a little shopping ourselves as this is usually a big meet. Thunder Ally really knows how to put on a great swap meet! We would like to welcome several new advertisers to our FT family. We always have a great time meeting them and are very grateful to them for advertising with us. Its important that we as a riding community support those who welcome us into their business. Looking forward to seeing you all on the road. Ride safe, and ride often!

Most of the time when we’re traveling down the highway, we see cars towing bikes on trailers but when you see Larry & Burma Barton coming down the highway you might take a second look. When the Barton’s are traveling they pull a car behind their bike. Yes, you heard me right. Behind their 2007 Honda 1800 Goldwing trike, they tow a mini replica of a ’57 Chevy, which is actually their cargo trailer. If I’m not mistaken Larry told me there is enough room inside of this little trailer for him to lie down. I didn’t ask why he was in there & I don’t think I will! There are some things better left alone. Shortly after traveling to the state of Alabama to purchase their ‘57 Chevy replica they made arrangements with Jack Daniels Customs in Licking, MO to have a custom trailer built under it. When all was said & done you can see they ended up with a very eye catching ride. And that is exactly what they’ve been doing ever since. They take their grand-daughter, Mikayla with them to several bike shows each summer. She has become their good luck charm according to Burma. The Bartons do a lot of traveling every year. They are members of the Goldwing Road Riders Assc. Once every year they leave the small town of Tyrone, Mo & travel with this group to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in TN to deliver a very large check. They along with the other members of this group have spent many hours working hard to raise this money. I’m sure you will agree with me when I say, this is for a very good cause.

The farthest trip the 2 have ever made was to N.C. 1900 miles. I ask them if they had ever had any funny experiences. Immediately Burma began to laugh & Larry got a big grin on his face. Let’s just say it was something about an Easyrider girl at Bikes, Blues & BBQ with nothing on but her chaps. I believe Larry said when he walked around the vendor’s booth northbound she was southbound at the same corner. Let’s just say it was like that ole’ deer in the headlights look. “How tall was this gal, Larry?” This couple has been riding since they were teenagers. I can relate to that. Through my years of travel, occasionally I run across a ride that just catches my eye. That was the case when I saw this combination so, I decided to share it with all of you. See you next month, ride safe!
