Well guys, it’s August! And as you are reading this, the guys & gals of the Full Throttle Army are making our way to Sturgis. We’re in for some good riding, there’s no question there. We’ll let ya know all the details of how it turns out next month. The Full Throttle Army has been enjoying the delights of summer for sure… floats trips, BBQ’S, Budweiser’s, (a Busch beer now and again) and sweatin’ our asses off on the bikes. Thank the Lord for small favors! But as it really starts to heat up out there, we’re thinking of… what else: Bikefest. We know you’re just as excited as we are about the 4th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest in September! While at Bikefest this year, be sure to spend some time at the Full Throttle Compound at H.Toads/Toad Cove. There’s going to be something for everyone to enjoy! Also be sure to visit Lake of the Ozarks H-D & thank them for donating the Full Throttle Passport Grand Prize custom Harley this year, the one that ALL of you have a chance to win. Pick up your passports at the Full Throttle Compound Bike Builder Vendor Village at Toad Cove! (Passports will be available at other locations also.) Make sure you leave enough room in your schedule to stop by Bagnell Dam River Park, located just below the Dam for their festivities. Chicky’s Wings & Spirits is another stop you won’t want to miss. Go by and see Dave and Holly at Shady’s at the Lake. And stop by the Leatherman to pick up some new biker gear. Special mention: ALSO IN SEPTEMBER, THE 11TH TO BE EXACT, STOP BY GATEWAY BMW FOR THEIR ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE TO SEE HONZ & THE BOYS. If you haven’t been by TJ’s Bar & Grill on a Thursday night yet, you’re missing out on a hell of good bike night! TJ’s Bar & Grill, Full Throttle Midwest, and Pure Pleasure Mega Centers have teamed up to bring you bikes, beers & porn (give- aways that is). Also on the Illinois side of the river, we’ve got Hot Summer Bike Nights at the Pasta House (Thursday’s as well) brought to you by the good folks of the Pasta House, Frieze Harley Davidson, Thunder Alley Promotions, & Full Throttle Midwest. Maybe make a night of it and ride on out to both locations on a Thursday night, hell what could be better than that?! As we say good-bye, or actually just “see ya next month”… we would like for you all to be sure to show some support for all of the advertisers you see in this magazine. Stop in for a beer, a bite to eat, a paint job, some new motor clothes, a cigar, or maybe even a new bike… whatever it is that you need, our advertisers can surely supply it for you. After all, they are the reason that we can share such a badass magazine at NO COST to you. -Steve Kleinhans & Brandie Politte

august 2010 F#$@ING AUGUST I hope nobody is reading this yet because your all in STURGIS ,but if you couldn’t make it then I hope you enjoy my own thoughts on the “helmet law”. I hate to beat a dead horse but here we go one last time, at least this year, the F%^$ING HELMET LAW… By now most; if not everyone knows the governor VETOED it. That said I did a little poll of my own, randomly picking numbers out of the phone book you may have gotten a call from me. I had some hang up and most were polite once they knew I wasn’t a telemarketer or some asshole trying to scam them. My thoughts were I wanted to see if 84 % of Missourians opposed the helmet law as stated by our beloved media, both on the news and in the newspaper so I called a hundred people off and on over a couple of weeks you would think with 84 % of people opposed that at least 8 out of every 10 I called would be against it. I mean this is how you conduct a pilot poll isn’t it? Well to my surprise that wasn’t the case. First off I didn’t ask if they rode a bike and I didn’t ask their age, race or religion I simply introduced myself and explained why I was calling and that I randomly picked them out of a phonebook and simply asked if they were in favor of the helmet law or against it 46 of them had no idea what the helmet law was even about 21 were against it. As I said didn’t ask anything other than for or against. 24 didn’t care one way or the other and only 9 were for it. So similar to what the polls in the media say, might not be that far off that is if you take all 3 of the others and add them together this is what they must have done. What amazed me was almost half didn’t even have a clue to the law, so in my little poll the people I asked were ordinary everyday people I didn’t target any age ,race ,sex, or religion so I feel mine is a true measure . REMEMBER BEFORE YOU FLIP OUT ON ME, THIS WAS MY WAY OF RESEARCH.

OK on a positive note everyone in the accident are on their way to a full recovery. And my nephew Steven is as of now cancer free, and my friend Matt is recovering from a bone marrow transplant that looks like it was successful and just a reminder there is a benefit for him AUGUST 15 at JACKS IRON BAR SALOON thanks to the local businesses who donated some very nice gifts and to the others not in this area who also donated this is going to be a benefit you don’t want to miss I promise. REMEMBER KEEP THE SHINEY SIDE UP AND THE RUBBER SIDE DOWN!!!!!!

new rider tip:

Don’t let someone talk you into a bike bigger than you can handle

I was reading one of my old EASYRIDER magazines this weekend, I like to go back from time to time and check out how the motorcycle world has changed and BELIEVE ME it has. Anyway I came upon an article in a July 1988 edition on trying to pass the helmet law. Now I know this has been going on longer than 1988 but for safe measure I’m going to use this date that means that this battle over the RIGHT TO DECIDE at a minimum has been going on MORE THAN 20 F%$#ING YEARS! Now I don’t know about you, but to me that’s pretty F^%$ING sad. How much money and effort has been spent to keep you as Americans safe from yourselves, I think we probably could have spent that money on more important things. Maybe like keeping jobs in our state and in others that border us. I know I’m starting to rant and rave and I apologize but I get pissed off when I think about what some MONEY HUNGRY BASTARDS are doing to this country and doing locally as well ,you see as I write this CHRYSLER is shutting down GENERAL MOTORS down to 1 shift and countless other companies and employees out of work. But don’t worry, it’s going to be OK because our governor went against the peoples wishes and VETOED your RIGHT TO DECIDE. That’s right your elected officials diligently worked to get it done and all their work and money spent AGAIN WAS WAISTED. So maybe next year, I personally would like to thank each and every organization and people, and there are many for their HARD WORK AND COMMITMENT AND OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS WHO DID WHAT THEY COULD DO TO LET US HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE.

SHADY JACK TAKES MEXICO A FULL THROTTLE 3 PART FEATURE PART 2

Friday, March 26, 2010 – Up early. Trying to make some time. Beautiful day. Roads getting rougher. Some pot holes big as a bike, speed bumps 6 inches high and road curves popping up everywhere. In addition to rough roads, people would pass you on the shoulder if you didn’t move over. The first time it happened, I shit not, seeing the car coming up. The idea is move over or get run over. Most roads are 2 lane and 18 wheelers and busses dominate the road. You give them room or pay the consequences.

Later that day, Louie, another bagger hit a dog and went down an embankment 20 feet. Luckily, he wasn’t hurt except a few abrasions, but the bike out of operation. Eight guys went down the ravine dragging and carrying the bike up the slope. These Latinos improvise within minutes and flagged a pickup truck over, paid the guy some pesos to haul the bike to Reynosa border town where one of them lives. Getting late and dark, it was time to get off the road, bed down at Veracruz. Saturday, March 27, 2010 – Up early. Trying to make some time. It’s cloudy, sprinkles of rain, time to move and catch up. About 60 bikes started up, hung over from riding hard but no complaints. By now I had calluses on my hands from gripping my handle bar so tight just to hang on. I had already went thru a roll of tape securing my mirror, bracket and wrapping my grips with the sticky side up so my hands wouldn’t slide off my grips. It wasn’t the distance of 4 or 5 hundred miles a day that was tough, it was the endurance of hanging onto the bike that exhausted you after 12 hours of riding. You just can’t make distance on these roads. A dirt bike would have been nice. Well too late for dreaming. Time to roll. Finally making some time. Stopped to get gas and pee. It cost 3 or 4 pesos to use the banos. Ladies guarded the door till you paid. Then they would hand you 2 feet of toilet paper. If you really had to pee, you better have your pesos ready.

BY SHADY JACK

The sky is clear and sunny. Rode along ocean highway most of the day. Beautiful scenery and blue water. The highway had fewer check points and smooth riding. On an average day, you will hit 4 or 5 tow roads and 4 or 5 military check points. This adds to the time it takes to travel. Later we were met by more LAMA riders from Posta Rico, Cuba, Mexico, Argentina, San Juan and Uruguay. By now we were 70 to 80 strong and they escorted us to Merida and Hotel Gran Real. Checked on bike, oiled chain, added more brake fluid, tightened bolts and nuts and mirror. Put lotion on my face and nose. I was on my third skin peeling. Nose was looking pretty bad. While riding I would put a dollar bill under my goggles and it would hang over my nose for protection. Two days in Merida was good timing because I had diarrhea. Rested up, ready for 2 days of partying. My new diet was fruit and pancakes. Tuesday, March 30, 2010 – Tuesday morning left Merida and headed for Valladolid. Stopped in Chichen Itza and saw the Maya Temples. Makes you wonder what happened to the great society. I saw them on Discovery Channel and now I am in front of them. It was a great rush that I’m here in person and it was worth the ride. The Maya MC Club took us to a great restaurant where the party began. It was a great night. Headed to Eco Hotel in smaller group when a local kid on a dirt bike t-boned another rider in front of me. The kid flew 20 feet but got up and ran. The rider had to be hospitalized. His wife was lucky. Later I heard he was doing fine and would be okay. Good to hear.

Then, it was my turn for problems. While gassing up, my kickstand broke. The bike fell and gas went everywhere. Well, if this is all, I’ll be lucky. Since I had a steel German helmet on, I was able to push it under the kickstand and frame to hold up the bike. We fixed that, ready to ride. Later that afternoon, another bike went down. Ramon went into a sandy curve and dropped his bike. He wasn’t so lucky. He broke his leg and is out of commission. Rolling on down the road, another slow down. Norm from Chicago was the only bagger with a trailer. This little trailer jumped up and down like pop corn. Guess what…. Finally the axle broke. Norm was trailer less. I think he was happy to lighten the load. Arriving at Ciudad Del Carmen tired, worn out, thirsty and hungry. I lost about 5 pounds by now and ready to sleep. Had to do some minor repairs first. I lost my headlight bracket, more tape, brake fluid low, front tire low and used my balling wire to wire one of my saddle brackets on. Felo, who helped me with my Spanish got a local guy, Aristides, to weld my kickstand back together, followed him to his shop and he performed magic on the ole stand. Back in business. I was ready for bed. Sunday, March 28, 2010 – 7:00 AM. Time to rock. Destination: Merida. By now my new speedometer showed 2820 miles I had traveled since St. Louis. First speedometer I had in twenty-five years. Nice to have an updated gadget on my bike. AUGUST 2010

R E H T A E W : r e z i l a u q e t a e the gr As we travel from event to event no matter how big or small, one thing that no one can control is the weather. Weather has a direct impact on the success of all outdoor and indoor motorcycle events. Three of the last events we did are case and point. The Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse was booked in Davenport Iowa for Sturgis on the River, Oklahoma Bike Week in Sparks Oklahoma and our first NASCAR event, the Coke Zero 400 in Daytona Florida. All had vastly different weather.

Sturgis on the River has had a reputation for tumultuous weather and this year didn’t disappoint. In the past for this event has had floods and severe thunderstorm, this year tornado sirens bleared for two days. Fortunately for everyone involved Glen, Jessica and the rest of the staff are weather crisis veterans and handled the situation professionally. Next stop was Sparks Oklahoma and the weather there was a blistering ninety-five degrees and sunny. Not quite the crises of a tornado but heat can take its toll

16

AUGUST 2010

on you after a few days, however the promoters Tony, Amanda and their staff supplied more ice and cold water than Canada in a snowstorm. This kept us and kept our VIP tent patrons very happy. Last but certainly not least was the Coke 400 in Daytona our first NASCAR event, unfortunately it was a wash out, and the race was postponed. Needless to say it was not very good for sales. The moral to this road story is; promoters who are professional and prepared for any situation can turn a potential disaster into a great time. Extreme weather or not our sub culture is all about pulling together and helping each other weather the storm…no pun intended. Catch us this month in Sturgis at the Monkey Rock where top-headlining artists like Creed will be performing. For more info visit us at stripclubchoppers.com and check us out on the Discovery network’s HD Theater on Two Wheel Thunder.

PRODUCT REVIEW

RK ARMOR CRASH CAGE Tested by: Garrett Bahr

When a crash occurs the bike undergoes impact from two directions. The downward force of falling over and usually a forward force unless the bike is stalled. RK Amor crash cages are built to withstand both heavy impacts to the motor portion of the bike. Thus keeping motor cases from being split open and sharing your engine oil with the asphalt. “Stout products” is the best description of what RK Armor is putting out on the market for many makes and models of bikes. This particular cage has endured a minimum of 10 drops and a couple significantly hard hits. The cage shows no signs of cracks in the welds or bends in the high strength steel that is used. The tig welding that is done to each cage can be pushed as far as being perfected to an art. The welds are visually stunning and the steel has blue heat coloring presenting some killer heat penetration. Another area that grabs ones attention is the CNC work done to the pucks on the end of the sliders, but more so the length of them. Being over 2 inches allows for some great wear before the pucks need replaced. RK also has noticeably awkward spacers throughout the entire cage. The intentions of these abnormally long spacers is to allow the rider to purchase standard grade 8 bolts from a local parts store instead of having to wait 1-2 weeks for a specialty bolt if one is to bend. The cages are also really compact in width towards the bottom to reduce dragging the cage when drifting or leaning hard. Of course nothing is perfect and like anything else there is always some give or take in the design of any product. Many of RK Armor’s cages require the fairings to be altered with holes cut out where the motor mounts are located. If not a metal extension would have to be used to raise or lower the sliders, this would greatly reduce the strength of the overall cage. The rear motor mount extrudes somewhat far from the frame and tends to find the riders shins from time to time but once again strength would have to be sacrificed to resolve the problem. Overall: There have been three previous cages from three different manufacturers mounted and tested on this Gsxr600. The RK Armor cage will be the last. Hands down.

Integrity (in-teg-ri-ty): adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty. A few days ago as I was working on my Ironhead ,I began to think about Integrity and define in my mind, what it is to me. To me, it’s helping others and expecting nothing in return. It’s doing what you say you’re going to do, when you say you’re going to do it. It’s having the backbone to admit when you’re wrong and the rectitude to make amends. Integrity is doing a job to your fullest, not cutting corners or slacking in any way. It’s having respect for other people’s privacy and property. Having the mental fortitude to stay calm and assess a volatile situation without snap judgment or anger also holds a strong place in integrity. The ethics of some of my close friends humbles me at times. Always willing to offer help, and to be there when you need them. Although there are very few who I can depend on to come through, I have full confidence in those who have proven themselves. I hold myself to a high standard when it comes to how I treat others......the flip side is when I don’t receive it in return. There is a whole new set of rules applied in this event. As an example… I would never steal from anyone. I once found a wallet with over three hundred dollars in it and contacted the rightful owner to return it. He was an elderly man, and he had no way to pick it up at the time so I drove 30 minutes to bring it to his door step. On the other hand, I once had a friend who I loaned $800 dollars for car repairs. Six months went by with no attempt to repay me, hell he acted as though it never happened. All the while I’m watching him take vacations, buy new wheels for the car I paid to fix, drink and party every night. The shit hit the fan when he bought a new flying V guitar. He smiled with great pride as he told me of the $1,500 price tag. I stayed calm, and at the first opportunity took the guitar and pawned it. I was offered $900 hundred for it at the pawn shop, but I told the thoroughly confused broker I wouldn’t take more than $800. I went home with MY

22

AUGUST 2010

money with the plan that If said “friend” were ever to try and repay me I would tell him not to worry about it. It’s been 15 years and he still has never brought it up. We haven’t talked in years...but John, if by some twist of fate you’re out there reading this, look up Integrity in the dictionary...then promptly go fuck yourself. In my world you get what you give.

Thanks to the True ones! You know who you are. Gary LaBrot.

BROWN BAGpresents PROPAGANDA

EL CANERO

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

El Canero has spent the past four years infiltrating the Kansas City punk scene with their own loud, fast, aggressive, in your face version of street punk and metal influenced sound. Some call it political, sci-fi punk rock while others call it violence and angst all bottled up inside a PBR. Named after a fish that will rip your flesh from the inside out, their music will do the same. The first E.P. titled “Dickfish Gave Me Syphilis” has limited availability on CD but is soon to be widely available on vinyl through live shows or online at myspace.com/elcanero and iTunes. El Canero prides themselves on being part of the DIY punk scene. Look for them to be coming through your town this October in the tour van named: “Zombie Hunter”, a radical Dodge van converted in to a zombie killing machine that fights the undead for the safety of all mankind. The “Zombie Hunter” is the beloved 6th member of the band joined by, RK on vocals, Mark U. and Mark D. on guitars, Eric on the bass, and Druu on drums. CONTACT INFO: www.myspace.com/elcanero

COOTER PUNCH KNOXVILLE, TN

REGIONAL

NATIONAL Cooter Punch is Dustin B-guitar/vox , Moon - drums/vox and Christopher George - bass. They started in 2008, out of Knoxville, TN, as a side project for Dustin and Moon from their other bands - U.S. Policestate and Linda Blairs Abortion. The goal of the band is to do a real nutty, old school hardcore, punk, thrash mix. Songs about martial arts, horror, death, girls.- all with a open sense of humor, including songs like Don Frye, She Lays Eggs, and Tom Atkins. The band has played with legends such as The Vibrators, The Murder Junkies and more and keeps gigging and recording, despite the fact Moon moved to Boston. They have just released a 13 song split tape with georgia band Doomed Youth and have released music on several compilation cds. The new cd is ready and will be released in the next few months. Look for it and comp appearances on Brown Bag Propaganda Records. CONTACT INFO: WWW.MYSPACE.COM/COOTERPUNCHHXC

INTERNATIONAL THE BLACK MARIAS To the band it seems like we have been around forever due mainly to PETERBOROUGH, EAST UK the fact that most of the band have been playing to some degree since the early eighties. Old farts, maybe, but the The Black Marias have the energy of a much younger band. Playing a brand of streetpunk that has caused some debate as to whether oi or punk, the style crosses the borders of both. If we like it, we play it. The band have supported a lot of their heroes including The Subs, SLF, Sham 69, Cockney Rejects to name but a few. The latest cd, The Clockwork Army is now available and is so entitled as a tribute to all who still carry the flag for music that says what it likes. The Marias have played in the USA on 2 occasions now including the infamous “Oi Fest 08” and more recently in Pittsburgh and are keen to return to play to more people. The band felt at home in the US. Gigs already planned for this year include supports to ANL August 10th, Sham69 November 21st and The Allied Invasion (germany) November 5th. The band have financed all the albums and tours from their own pockets (much to the dismay of their families) such is their enthusiasm to play their music to anyone who wants to listen, Check em out at http://www.myspace.com/theblackmariasuk and also on facebook. 30

POWERED BY GALLAGHER’S GETAWAY

A letter from the illinois editors

40

Wow

... what a wild and crazy 2 years in the Full Throttle Army. Now here Tracy and I sit as Illinois editors. We are super proud of this and honored that the Kleinhans brothers have given us this position. I knew Steve was up to something when he started bringing me into closed door meetings and explaining more and more on how and why things are done the way they are here in the FT Camp. We’ve learned a lot in a short time. Thanks guys, we won’t let ya down! So what do we plan to do with this new position? Kick ass and march on! When you’re a part of a cutting edge magazine like this you get used to shots being taken at ya, and ideas being ripped off.. Hell, one publication takes a monthly shot at us in the publisher’s letter! Guess ya got to have SOMETHING of interest in it huh? Thanks for the free publicity guys! We always look forward to reading about ourselves in your mag! And let’s not forget about the magazine that was going to put all 3 local publications under. Whatever happened to those guys anyway? This year Tracy and I wanted to put on a large event in Illinois. But, with the growth of this magazine and the huge success of Hot Summer Bike Nights we just got too busy to do it right. And if I’ve learned anything from the Colonel, it’s that successful events take time to plan. So in 2011 look for an event like you have never seen in Illinois. We have the perfect place chosen, and by next spring we will drop the bomb on ya. It’s going to be a true one of a kind event you won’t want to miss! Ok, all that being off my chest let’s move on. We would like to welcome a few new members to the FT Camp. We have a new sales rep that Tracy and I have really high hopes for. Her name is Katie Zanders, she rides her own Harley and is well known in Southern Illinois. She has Tracy and my full support and will have some deals your gonna want to hear about if you’re looking to advertise in this highly sought after magazine. Be watching for her! Next, is a kid a lot of people have been asking us about. Several of you have seen him with us in Illinois at Hot Summer Bike Nights, and a few other events. His name is Philip and he’s 11. Sounds crazy but I’m tellin ya what. This kid has an eye for taking photos and we are all really impressed by him. You will see him at my side more and more as the summer goes on, and you can find some of his photos on our facebook page. We call him QT (Quarter Throttle), and if you see him taking pics of your bike, it’s for real. September is just a month away and that brings us to Tracy and my self’s favorite FTM Event. Lake of the Ozarks Bike Fest 2010. We look forward to this all year long and this year is going to be one hell of a great time. Check out this issue for details and make plans to attend. There’s a party at every turn and some beautiful riding. If you’re a poker run fan then you will want to get in on the Full Throttle Passport Run where one lucky person will drive home a brand new Harley Davidson and it AINT no sportster! Look for the entire Full Throttle Army at the FT Compound at Toad Cove. Some of the sickest bike builders around will be there showing off their creations. Don’t miss it this year! August will be a pretty rough month for Tracy and I. My oldest son and his Marine unit will be deployed to Sangin Afghanistan. Our good friends at TR’s Place (ad in this issue) have been so awesome and are allowing us to throw him a party there on August 21st. ALL of you are welcome to attend and help us give our Marine one hell of a send off! So in close here I’d like to say thanks to all of you for the awesome support you not only show this magazine, but the support you have all shown for Tracy and me. There’s nothing else we would rather be doing than riding and hanging out with all of you. To our advertisers, well... you guys simply are the best! Thank you all for trusting us with your advertising and we will continue to bring you the best free magazine in the Midwest!

M U L Y S A Y SAFET he Storm Riders In T

BY T.J. MILES There are bikers who believe that riding in a storm is part of the overall motorcycling experience and that this loop cannot be closed until the act is accomplished. I’ve ridden in rain and thunderstorms on numerous occasions over the years and it is never been by choice. Wet pavement and a balancing act on two wheels with fogged up eyewear is something that should be avoided if at all possible. There is usually at least one rider in a group this day and age with access to a weather radar on their phone. That said, we should be able to plan a stop before the shit hits the fan and wait out the first 30 minutes of a storm. This gives time for the storm front (heaviest rain, wind and tornadoes) to pass and for the oil to wash off the pavement before we hit the road again. Note: We should have pulled over at that awesome little Cafe in Pinckneyville on the way back from Old Shawneetown.

VISOR / GLASSES / GOGGLES / WINDSHIELD CARE - To help eliminate rain from building up and impairing your vision, there are a few products on the market you can apply prior to riding. However, if you get caught in a needy situation, shaving cream and furniture polish seem to work very well. These products encourage the water to roll and bounce right off. Your visor, glasses or goggles may become foggy while riding in the rain and there are products on the market to help prevent that too. Cracking your visor open a little every now and again or creating an air gap between your face and glasses/goggles will hopefully eliminate this problem. A shaded or dark windshield, visor, glasses or goggles are completely useless in a rain storm. GEAR - In an ideal situation, you’ll have invested in some all weather riding gear including waterproof boots. The minimum investment

you should have on hand when it comes to rain gear is waterproof gloves that fasten securely around your wrist. Not only do gloves keep your hands dry during a rainstorm, but they’ll also help keep them warm. Another option is purchasing a rain suit to wear over your leathers if you don’t have all weather gear. However if you still don’t want to spend a few extra dollars on a rain suit, then another, albeit low-cost, option is to wear a couple of large trash bags over your clothing and plastic grocery bags inside your boots wrapped around your socks to help with rain-proofing yourself. Riding in the rain is not fun and worse if you get soaked.

TIRES - Tires with actual TREAD on them are the safest when it’s raining. Tread provides more rubber to grip the road. Still, even with decent tread on the tires, pushing your traction patch to the limits in the rain, be it a drizzle or a downpour, is not advised unless you want to hydroplane or low side in front of oncoming traffic. THINGS TO AVOID - Any painted line is a hazard. Crosswalks can be unsafe for motorcyclists, particularly if you’re turning and crossing the lines at an angle. Slow down more than usual and make the turn straight up, rather than in a lean. Diamonds in HOV lanes are very nasty when you lean into one. Until the DOT addresses the issue and comes up with a tackier texture you’re the one in control of your destiny. Many commercial and residential parking areas are paved with very slick concrete surfaces. Your wet entry can put you on the ground in a second. Again, ride slow and straight up. The rubber they use around railroad tracks to decrease the sound as cars drive over them (little circles) provide zero traction to you as you cross. Manhole covers are enemy number one and railroad tracks rank a close second. Making a turn over these steel surfaces sets you up for trouble. Keep the bike straight up and cross over it slowly. Grated bridge crossings and metal plates are a nasty encounter in the rain. Look at where you want to ride, take it slow and don’t try any sudden movement. Avoid puddles, they may be much deeper than expected. Those little red and blue rainbows (oil) on the ground means danger. Ride slow and straight up. Ride in the path of the tire trails left by vehicles in front of you since it will be the area on the road with the least amount of water on it. Ride the middle of the road once the oil is washed off to avoid the lakes left by years of tire ruts. WIND - A constant 25-mph wind from the side can make for less-than-happy riding...especially if you have solid wheels. You might

have to lean a bit into the wind to maintain your position. Keep the motorcycle on the side of the lane that the wind is coming from. This is in case a big blast moves you over a bit. Expect it and be ready to react.

BRAKES - Slow down and increase the distance between you and other vehicles. You will need more hazard recognition and reaction time in the rain. Squeeze your brakes progressively when braking and remember that your brakes are wet also.

VISIBILITY - Use your emergency flashers if caught in a storm and encourage other riders in your group to do the same. This will increase your visibility to other vehicles and riders who may not be able to see very well.

The best option is to check the weather before you leave, analyze it correctly and find a place to take cover early when you see black clouds on the horizon. Gas stations and diners are optimal due to the fact that they provide everything you need while you wait out a storm. Waiting out a storm in a bar could easily turn into a disaster if you stay too long.

By Eric Barnett I built this bike last year for the Horse Backstreet Chopper’s Amateur Chop-Off contest in my tiny one car garage in Flint Michigan. To start the project off I parted out a previous build keeping only the engine, transmission, and front wheel. The engine, a ’78 shovel lower end with panhead heads, was sent to my old friend Rod at Stripped Down Cycles for a rebuild. We worked out a trade for labor and I ended up doing the perimeter brake set up on his Ironhead. I found a deal on a frame from Robert Elswick on eBay and it was such a steal that I could hardly build one for the price. Plus it needed all of the mounts for everything but the motor and tranny so it left a lot of room for me to get creative. Robert still sells these frames on his site: www.elswickcycles.com. Once I got the frame everything started coming together real quick like. I’ve been fabricating my own parts for a few years now and I think I might have felt a bit guilty about not building the frame on this because I really went to town on the rest of it. I built the front end from scratch. The main legs were machined from solid 4140 chrome-moly. They started as two 2” x 1.5” bar stock and were milled down with the help of my good friend Dale Patterson and his workhorse mill. The flat parts were laser and water jet cut by Fab Kevin. Lucky for me I went to school for CADD for a couple years so I can design things like this and have them cut for not much more than what it would cost to buy the material. After the springer was finished I built the rear perimeter brake set up using stock Buell parts and soon after that it was a roller. I fabbed the funky looking oil tank out of aluminum. The fender halves were rolled out of 3/16” aluminum by someone else but I welded them together and mounted it with some handmade stainless steel struts. The foot controls, exhaust, seat pan, and inner primary were all built next. I built a lot of the parts out of stainless flat stock welded together to form a “T” shape. I think it ties everything together nicely and it’s strong enough to build a bridge out of. I attempted to build an aluminum gas tank similar to the one pictured. It didn’t turn out quite as pretty as I wanted it to so I had to scrap it and buy a West Eagle tank. I may have been able to build the one I wanted if I kept at it but I had a deadline to meet and the West Eagle tank was the same shape that I was going for anyway. I ended up finishing this bike with a little time to spare and went on to win the Amateur Chop-Off with it. A few things have changed on it since then. One is the seat; I swapped out the old one for a nice narrow Bates knock off. I also got rid of the old bars. The bars and risers you see here are a new part I offer. The risers have unique design and they’re about a half inch slimmer than most other risers. Last year I rode it from Michigan to Arizona to North Carolina and back on one trip. This year I made it from southern Illinois to Santa Monica California, to Norfolk Virginia, and then to North Carolina for a total of over 5,000 miles inside of nine days. My best time on it so far is 3,050 miles in 77.5 hours, needless to say it runs great and holds up pretty damn good out on the road! Especially for something with a power plant that is over 32 years old. Rod really knows how to keep that old iron purring. Two months ago Stripped Down Cycles Rod and I decided to collaborate and I’m working out of his shop full time doing fab work and custom parts. Stripped Down Cycles is now your one stop custom shop more so than ever. We do everything from engine rebuilding, to custom frame work, custom sheet metal work, fabrication, design work with CADD 3-D modeling, and machining. Feel free to call the shop or check out the website: www.strippeddowncycles.com. You might have to leave a message though; we’ll probably be out riding!

CHICKY’S WINGS and SPIRITS

is Lake of the Ozarks’ only restaurant specializing in chicken wings. All kinds of chicken wings, all of the time. Owners Jim and Pam Reis partnered with their long-time friends Mark and Marla McDonald to build a strip mall that resembles an Old Western town on Highway 54, at the entrance to the lake. Jim wanted easy access off of the highway and lots of flat, paved parking for motorcycles. BIKE NIGHTs are Wacky Wednesdays with discounted wings for anyone on a motorcycle. The strip mall has six businesses: Ole McDonald Carhart Outlet, Osage Auction Bar, Osage Bait and Tackle, Osage Seed and Fee, Osage Trading Pawn Shop, and of course; the famous Chicky’s Wings and Spirits. Chicky’s big draw is platters of fifty chicken wings served by cute chicks in short denim skirts and cowgirl boots. Chicky’s is open seven days a week from 11am to close. Drinks are two-for-one every day at happy Hour from 3pm to 6pm. Even with all this fun going on, you will find a family atmosphere at Chicky’s. The youngsters

get a thrill from the western town appeal as they watch trout swim in the spring-fed artesian well that is located in front of the businesses. Jim and Pam are St. Louis natives. They came to Lake of the Ozarks two decades ago. Jim is a builder and gun enthusiast and when he couldn’t find a gun shop, he decided to build PISTOLS PLUS, Missouri’s most successful gun shop. September 1st will be the fifteenth year anniversary of Pistols Plus. A second Pistols Plus location will open this fall in St. Peters MO. The girls at chicky’s say that Pam is a wonder woman. Pam manages much of the day to day operations of all of their businesses. You can find her at Pistols Plus during the day. They both work at Chicky’s in the evening bussing tables, delivering food, serving drinks or whatever needs to be done. On a recent evening, Pam had to leave a conversation to bus a table and Jim had to change his hat to run next door to fetch some minnows from the bait and tackle shop for some dining customers heading out to fish. Chicky’s is on the 2010 Full Throttle Passport Run for the Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest, and will feature wing specials for bikers, a beer garden and music. Ole’ McDonald Carhart will be offering biker discounts. Be sure to say hello to Mark when you are at the Bagnell Dam River Park, another one of his ventures. Bagnell Dam River Park is also on the 2010 Full Throttle Passport Run for Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest. Jim is planning an auction at Osage Auction barn featuring biker paraphernalia.
