Well now, if you are reading this then you already know what time of the year it is. It’s time for the 4th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest. Around the office, we are in a crazy flurry of Bikefest dealings…and we’re making sure that it’s the best one yet! In it’s 4th year, and it’s already the biggest biker event in the state of Missouri. September 16th -19th the Full Throttle Compound at Toad Cove will be a destination for bikers from across the U.S. We have had the opportunity to travel this summer, and meet a lot of you, in Missouri (of course!), Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, Arkansas, Illinois, Florida and many places in between. There is truly going to be something for everyone to enjoy at this year’s Bikefest. For all of your camping needs, the great folks at Bagnell Dam Riverpark (located just below the Dam on the strip) are there with open arms. They’re also going to have festivities for the masses. Saturday September 18th the Bagnell Dam Strip will be closed for a “Sturgis Style” Street party, for bikes only. And be sure to stop by the main compound and say “hey” to the Full Throttle crew. After all, at this event the entire FTM Army will be on hand for all of your feedback and questions on this amazing magazine. The date of September 11th is one that is not easily forgotten here in the U.S. This year, the date falls on a Saturday, and there are many different places where you can take part in some memorable festivities. Honz and crew at Gateway BMW will be celebrating their 3rd year with an open house on that day, with stunts by “Teach” McNeil, and drag racer Janie Palm will be on hand too. Doc’s Harley-Davidson will have their 3rd Annual Fallen Heroes Run to benefit BackStoppers. This year, rather than conduct a group ride, they are hosting a run for riders to enjoy at their own pace. After the run there will be a huge party celebrating their 55th Anniversary, complete with food, music and beverages! These are just a few of the events that will be going down that day. See our “Crusin’ Calendar” in this issue for an event in your neighborhood. The entire Army would like to welcome the Bradley Law Firm to the FTM family. The Bradley Law Firm proudly serves MO and IL for all of your legal needs. Contact ryan@thebradleylawfirm.com with your legal questions. If you didn’t have the chance to make it out to Frieze Harley-Davidson’s 2nd “Friday Night Live” event on August 27th for a Luau, you still have the opportunity to come out and party on September 24th. Come out and celebrate the Stone Celts H.O.G. Chapter’s 25th Anniversary! See ya’ll at the 4th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest! -Steve Kleinhans & Brandie Politte

SHADY JACK TAKES MEXICO A FULL THROTTLE 3 PART FEATURE PART 3

BY SHADY JACK

Thursday, April 1, 2010 – Up early. Headed for Cancun, my final destination. Three hours later, we were in Cancun. Totally different from the countryside. This is a beautiful city, totally a resort city. This was a switch, 5 star hotel – Fiesta Americana Condesa. Beautiful, with white sandy beaches and great services. Well deserved, this was home for a while.

LAMA members had their 15th International Rally while I lounged on the beach wishing my girl was here. Sunday, April 4, 2010 - The Illinois President, Dave Vargas had an emergency and to leave and head back to the USA. I was ready since I had never left my bar so long. I was anxious to head back; after all we had gone as far as you could in Mexico. Monday, April 5, 2010 – Left in the dark, cold rain. Hard riding especially with pot holes. Two hours later, rain slowed and daylight hit. We’re starting to roll. Afternoon took wrong road and flagged over a local. Dave talked to the driver a few minutes and looked perplexed. I asked Dave what that was all about. He commented that we had to go down the ravine, thru some trees to get to the right highway. I said with 2 baggers and a chopper?! He smiled and said – “Well today, they’re dirt bikes”. I turned to Deltona Don and said if that Latino can take that bagger down that ravine, I’ll be behind him. Donald said good, then I’ll watch both of you guys! Well, here we go. Dave got stuck in a rut, I got stuck in a rut. The bike would have fallen over, but the ruts were 10 inched deep. We couldn’t back up so over the ruts we went and finally onto the highway. What a relief. Donald right behind us, we all smiled and shook our heads. The rest of the day was a cake walk. Tuesday, April 6, 2010 – Up early. About 600 miles to the border. If we make it tonight, we cut 2 days off the trip. We’re physiced. Let’s roll. 6:00 PM we finally hit the border. Customs photographed our bikes and all serial numbers. Received papers, finally about an hour later we were allowed to cross but 1st had to pay 25 bucks to get out! US Customs asked me what I was doing in Mexico. I tried to explain the biker rally. He commented I wasn’t Latino and I told him – After 2 days of diarrhea, I felt like a Mexican. What a great feeling when I crossed over to the USA! I rode about 100 feet and looked back, it felt like that was a dream and I just drove thru it. The most incredible, memorable, exciting adventure I had ever experienced in my life. And I did it on my chopper. Next day, my buddy, Dave, met me at 3 Rivers Texas. Temperature is 37 degrees and rainy, but who cares – I was home bound. 7:00 PM we pulled up to Shady Jack’s. We had ten friends outside waiting for us… a great feeling. My girl, Ann, ran outside and hung a big kiss on me! Sunburnt nose and bottom lip, lost 12 pounds and tired. I still was strong enough to pick up several beers - YES – I was home!

S I G R U T S turns 70 THE GRAND DADDY OF RALLIES IS ALIVE AND WELL. The annual Sturgis rally promised to be big and it exceeded expectation. Estimates put attendance at 600,000 and from what we experienced that was accurate. The weather was great and the vendors were busy. This might not be an indicator of an economic recovery but it’s for sure that bikers are sick of sitting home and being afraid to enjoy the life style we all love. It’s never been about money. Enough bad news from CNN all you need is some gas and a tent. The bars, restaurants, hotels, campgrounds and concerts were all rockin. Kid Rock, Bob Dylan , ZZ Topp, Ozzy Osbourne, STP and Guns and Roses jammed their greatest hits to crowds in excess of 20,000, at several points in the show everybody fired up their bikes at once… Ahh that sweet sound mixed with smell of gasoline and smoke from campfires, the perfect combination’ The Strip Club Choppers Roadhouse was located at the Legendary Buffalo Chip and the party never stopped, The Chip, as it is affectionately referred to, is the essence of Sturgis itself, camping, bars, concerts, food, girls, vendors etc., encompasses the true biker life style. Hat’s off to Rod “Woody” Woodruff and

16

his daughter Toni for making it the place to be! We were so blown away by this venue that we signed a five-year deal to appear there. Many people cannot afford to attend multiple rallies, so if you can only get to one a year make it Sturgis. Oh yeah and the riding is as good as it gets with, Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Crazy Horse, the Badlands, Custer State Park and more are only a few hours away.

As always visit us at www.stripclubchoppers.com and come see us at: The Freeport Blues Festival in Freeport Texas on September 3rd to the 5th, The Texas Rally September 9th to the 12th in Somerville Texas, The Lake Of The Ozark’s Bike Fest in Missouri from September 16th to the 19th and the Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City Florida from September 30th to October 3rd.

PRODUCT REVIEW Koibalt 41” 9 Drawer ChesT by: Garrett Bahr

Hey, you know where I placed my 3/8 drive socket? You’ve questioned yourself, or your buddy that has all the answers to get your bike fixed…..Except where the missing tool is. You give up looking and fold under time restraints and purchase a new one. The task finally gets completed, but way past schedule. The next day after entering the shop, there’s that long lost tool. It happens time and time again until…..A Kobalt drawer chest is sitting in the shop to give a hand in the organization department. The Kobalt drawer chest will give plenty of storage for the at home mechanic or a great top stack for the more serious wrencher. Features: It is constructed out of rust resistant stainless steel. The drawers have heavy-duty ball bearing slides for an easy open day in and day out, with a rating up to 100 lbs. per drawer. Dual cam lock security locks with keys to keep those unwanted sticky fingers out. Dual hydraulics that opens up the reinforced lid and directly beneath is the grip drawer pulls for a sure grip. The drawer liners keep tools stationary in the box and the recessed handles are out of the way, but there when you need them. The side hanging hooks….aka, helmet holders are placed on each side of the box as well. Then there the PVC conduit to keep the stainless steel spotless when not in use. So yeah, it’s loaded with goodies. The low down: This particular box has only had one flaw that is apparent in every one of the boxes. The end caps of the sure grip drawers tend to pop off so frequently that Kobalt supplies extras with the manual. With a little time and a tube of superglue the problem can be resolved. Secondly, the customer ratings on lowes.com rate the box at a mediocre 3.6 out of 5. This can make one who does their homework on a product a little skeptical on dropping the dough. These rating are most likely a little harsh since most satisfied customers do not ever use their time to praise a product vs. the unlucky who picked up the lemon and has some ranting and raving to do. But that’s ok too, as long as it’s in the 3-year warranty….Take it back, no questioned asked.

THROWING IT DOWN Often I talk with guys building a ground up bike. And they ask me what color they should go with and what kind of graphics should be painted on the tins .I believe in most cases if you listen to the bike, Ii will tell you what the paint should look like. I know that sounds zen like or something but its true and in most cases less is more. If you lay down a good metal flake and some kandy for a base that’s always a good foundation for some cool throw back airbrushing and fades. In this case the client wanted gold flake and said just do your thing. So after I painted and kandied the tank and rear fender. I’m ready to do some take outs.

1. First I lay out the spine of the fender 2. C ontinuing to build off of the spine I tape out panels on both sides of the fender and tank. 3. I plan to do a fish scale pattern so wanna break up the panels a bit with these tape outs. 4. Once the blue line tape is all applied it's time to mask the proper areas with masking tape. 5. H ere both tins are taped up and ready for a timeless affect. Handed down from the glorious paint gods of the 60s and 70s, yes I give you fish scales. 6.) Y ou can easily make a pattern using a quarter simply trace out the quarter side by side about 6 or 7 times then take a razor or exact-o knife and cut out half of the circles you traced. Then offset the circles as you airbrush the previous row. 7. A fter the scales are done I airbrush around the remaining line tape. 8. Removing the final bits of tape reveals the final design. 9. H ere you can see the final design after I added some white pins, just to give it that little something more. 1

Fulton Missouri From the Ground Up

My name is Derrick Deuel, I live in Fulton MO, a member of the IBEW 257 that decided one day to build a pro street from the ground-up. I have been working on this bike since April 2009, buying all the parts when I had the cash. Here are the specs on the bike: The frame is a straight up chopper 40deg neck with a 6 inch stretch and 0 inch rise and was powder coated by Pro Powder Coating in Russellville. It has an Ultima front end +2 inverted with 5deg rake in the trees. The motor is a Ultima 127 with a 6spd trans right side drive. The tank was made by vision custom choppers and the tins are painted brandy wine by my friend at Dream Works Collision in Fulton. The bars were made by Twisted in St.Marys, PA and painted brandy wine with the streamline internal clutch and throttle and fitted with a Dakota digital gauge and cup. The seat is hand tooled by Rich Phillips from Rich Phillip’s cycles and leather. The wheel are factory Big Dog wrapped with Avon 120-21 front and 30018 rear. I want to give a special thanks to my wife and daughter for supporting me, especially in the last couple of days so I could finish for the show. Thanks to my close friends for your support, you know who are.

Labrot

I was driving back from Indianapolis today returning from a trip to see my girlfriend. I drove up to visit her, and our friends that she dances with. They are on a multi date burlesque tour that ends in Texas this September. I hung out with the girls for two of the tour dates in Bloomington and Indy and had a great time. On my way home I was thinking how great it is that the super hot weather is breaking for a bit (says the weather man). But today was great, sunny and in the low 80’s. I was just getting into Eddie Money’s “She was Shakin” when..... VEEEEEEROOOOOooooo! A crotch rocket rips by me, front wheel high in the air! He passed me very quickly and I was going 70mph. I would put this guy at 85 to 90mph on one wheel! I’m not a big sport bike fan but I respect their power and I do dig seeing them in action. When he first went by I thought hell yeah, get it man get it! Then after he was long gone, I looked over to the line of cars backed up in the other lane traveling east, the opposite way I was going. There was a traffic jam and the drivers were only going around 20mph. I began to wonder what might happened, if he lost control of his bike and it was instantly transformed into a 450lb spinning death machine cart wheeling at 80 plus across the median and into oncoming traffic. Then I thought...wow...not so cool. Now don’t get me wrong I like speed and stunts just as much as the next guy and I am certainly not a perfect rider. I’ve pushed the speedo to 130+ on my Flyrite. But it was on a straight road through the Baja desert while on the El Diablo run in 2008. What’s my point you may ask? If you’re going to risk life and limb, make sure it’s only yours on the line. Use some common since when your pushing yourself and your bike to the limit. Now I’m sure I’ll get some shit about what a pussy I am from a few folks who are tougher than they are smart. I just hope you hard asses are never in your car with your wife and kids and look over to see that 90mph twisted ball of steel hurtling toward your windshield. Nuff said. -Gary Labrot

August 9th – 15th 2010 marked the 70th Anniversary of the world renowned Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The little town of Sturgis South Dakota, nestled just north of the Black Hills, has been home to the most popular motorcycle rally in the United States for an unbelievable 70 years. And you’re about to hear the story of a group of 15 friends, family and co-workers that made the trip westward for an experience of a lifetime, to see exactly why this rally is going 70 years strong. Sunday August 8th at the ass crack of dawn, is when we set out on our adventure. Departing from Jefferson County MO, destination; Grand Island Nebraska for the night. Our crew, made up of an extreme mixture of people. A “motley crew” some would say. And riding a wide variety of motorcycles to boot! Guys and gals alike were all along for the ride, with our ages ranging from 16 to 55, we certainly filled the quota for each age bracket in between, and had people from all walks of life. Some from different regions in Florida, and actually we had the chance to bring along the Editor of the Full Throttle Florida edition. We had some guys from Cuba, Houston, Winfield, and of course those of us from St. Louis Missouri. Some were Sturgis veterans, while others were virgins. Quite a few of us had never met before, but that’s part of the beauty of a trip like this, by the end of the trip: you would have thought we were all family. Our group started out as 12 total, and amazingly grew and grew the entire way. At one point while in Sturgis, we were riding 13 bikes deep, and had our Full Throttle chase truck and trailer with a driver and passenger. We also picked up a couple of extra passengers on one of our day rides. The awesome guys from Cowtown USA in Cuba MO met up with us in St. Joseph MO on our way out, to join us for the ride and gave us the opportunity to demo a Can-Am Spyder RT. All I can say is; what an amazing machine! But we’ll save the details on the Spyder for another time. We couldn’t have asked for better riding weather Sunday. A little warm which actually is an understatement, we were in the middle of a 102 degree heat wave, but we won’t complain. No rain is a good thing. Other than a closed road which led to a detour, and one of the bikes losing all power, we made it across Missouri; saw a bit of Iowa and to Grand Island Nebraska with minor complications. Monday’s ride through Nebraska, and then to Sturgis South Dakota was beautiful, and not one bike broke down, or the Full Throttle chase truck. We had lucked out, even made it to our campground just before dark to set up the Full Throttle Compound campsite. We had officially made it to Sturgis. And we knew just from driving through Main St. that we were in for a hell of a good time. Sturgis day #1 started out with an amazing scenic ride down Needles Hwy. If you’ve never seen this area, you’re missing out. There are crazy rock formations and tunnels everywhere you look, streams, and pristine lakes with rock formations surrounding them. A truly awe inspiring place, or in my case, a “holy shit look at that!” kind of place. We also rode through Custer State Park and Iron Mountain Road to Mount Rushmore. Mount Rushmore must be one of the most patriotic places I’ve ever seen personally. You walk away feeling very proud of your country. The next few days, we experienced some amazing riding. And of course the festivities around the surrounding towns were a sight to see. There was one day we went to the town of Hulett Wyoming, and met some interesting people. After we left there, in a matter of about 3 hours we had rode through 3 states. South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. We also got to see Devil’s Tower, an amazingly beautiful, yet kind of eerie sacred site for many American Indians. My personal favorite ride was through Spearfish Canyon South Dakota. The canyon spans 20-miles along a scenic State Byway. Less than a mile wide, the canyon is always ‘close and upward’, and on a motorcycle it’s a breath taking view. We stopped to take a swim in a 40ft waterfall that is hidden behind a restaurant in Spearfish Canyon. This has to be one of the most beautiful places in the area with out a doubt. We began making our way back to St. Louis Saturday morning. We said good-bye to some of our new friends that were making their way to other destinations, and packed up and hit the road. We road for most of the day, all the while knowing that we were having trouble with the trailer, but we couldn’t find a place to fix it. We made it back to Grand Island Nebraska and slept for a few hours, got up and headed for home. We were able to find an auto parts store in Lincoln, and were lucky enough to have 2 people with us that could fix our trailer issues. We took a break for a few hours, while the boys were workin’, and were on the road again. We made it to St. Louis safe and sound Sunday night. And bid our new and old friends good-bye Monday afternoon as they still had to make their way back to their homes. Steve and I personally would like to thank Don Kleinhans for giving us the opportunity for such an amazing experience, and for planning the trip every step of the way. I speak for the whole group when I say “Thank you Don, we love and appreciate everything you do”. We’re ready for next year!

REGIONAL

THE UnMUTUALS

The UnMutuals are a hard hitting punk/powerpop group consisting of 4 ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI frontmen. Clever hooks and harmonizing backup vocals set them apart from the others. The band is Al Swacker on rhythm guitar and vocals, Jeff Hess on bass and vocals, Steve Dachroeden on drums and vocals and Jimmy Griffin on guitar and vocals. The UnMutuals started in december of 2002 out of the ashes of Drunkabilly. Drunkabilly started in ‘94 in St. Louis as a 3 piece band doing sloppy punk versions of Hank Williams and Buddy Holly. With Al Swacker on guitar and vocals, Jeff Hess on drums and Ray Johnson on bass the band rocked several clubs regionally and after a few lineup changes called it quits in 2000. Bob and Sherri at the Wayout club asked for a reunion show in 2002. The band agreed but played the show as a 4 piece bringing Steve Dachroeden of Last Year’s Youth in on drums. Hess moved to bass, Johnson to second guitar. During the rehearsals the band wrote several new songs and then continued on as the Christ Punchers. Johnson moved to Seattle in Sep. of 2002 and Mark Reynolds of Freud’s Mom was brought in on lead guitar in december and the UnMutuals were born. In the next 3 years the band recorded 2 albums. The first one, Rocket Bomb was recorded in Cleveland by Rob Stevens of 100,000 Leagues Under My Nutsack and Frank Cavanaugh of Filter (I love to namedrop). The second album, Tulsa Pass, recorded in Tulsa, OK by Stephen Egerton of All/Descendents unfortunately is still pending release. From 2002 to 2005 the UnMutuals played locally opening for veteran punk bands such as DOA, the Vibrators and Bad Rligion just to name a few. After a brief midwestern tour with Dead Kennedys in November of 2005, the band broke up because of internal problems. In 2009, the UnMutuals came back with a bang with Jimmy Griffin of the Incurables taking Reynolds’ spot on lead guitar. In 2010, the UnMutuals are still playing and rocking St. Louis and ready to take it further. CONTACT INFO: WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THEUNMUTUALS

THE OLYMPIANS

NATIONAL

The Olympians are a four piece punk band from the Badlands of Upland UPLAND, CALIFORNIA in Southern California. Started in July 2008, in a hot as fuck tool shed, the members: Patrick-Drums, Mike-bass, Brendan-Guitar and Vocals and Oscar- Guitar and vocals, the band took their passion for music and made it into a religion. While most bands just want you to know about their music, The Olympians want you to know that while we are passionate about our music, the four of us are the best of friends. While we may get into fistfights over the talents of Steve Vai, who is the cooler Stooge (Larry or Shemp), or how many cokes can Oscar possibly drink in one sitting - we are very serious about our music. Our influences range not just from punk, but classic rock, jazz, folk and metal. We have a song released on Radio Riot 3 and a 4 band split coming out soon on Brown Bag Propaganda and a song on Kuntastik Records Comp Volume Two. We have played with local greats such as Slab, Booze Hounds, the Failures, and Horror Squad while playing with punk legends RF7, Doggy Style, DI, and the Adicts plus an opening slot with the Misfits in November. Come see our myspace page: www.myspace.com/speacialolympians.

INTERNATIONAL PIPES AND PINTS Pipes And Pints were formed in 2006 by Vojta Kalina (Highland PRAGUE/ USA / CZECH REPUBLIC Bagpipes/Vocals) with a dream of a band that combines punk rock with dirty folk music such as The Pogues. Soon after, he met Tomas Novotny (Guitar/Vocals, ex-Who ate my Skate) who shared the same dream, flavored by country and rock and roll. The band released a demo and toured Central Europe both as a headlining band and in support of The Porters, Society Parasites, and others throughout 2007 and 2008. However, the vision of the future for Pipes And Pints was not shared by all of the original members and a line-up change resulted in the addition of Lukas Vincour (Drums/Vocals, ex-Punkhart and more), who moved to Prague from Moravia; Syco Mike (Lead Vocals, ex-Mugshot76), who canceled his return from Austria back to native California and moved to Prague with only his dog Tequila; and eventually Ondra Balvin (Bass/Vocals, Super Pilot, ex-ElPaso), a good friend from the streets, squats, and clubs of Prague. In December 2008, after only a month of rehearsing, the new Pipes And Pints line-up (without Ondra on bass yet) recorded a 5-track EP which immediately became a promise of better days and the beginning of a new adventure. This EP release was well received and the boys didn’t hesitate to hit the road with it. It was during that tour Pipes And Pints added new bass player Ondra and proved to everyone they were serious about their music as evidenced by their relentless and voracious playing at European clubs and festivals. After less than a year the band got a reputation as true believers who give it all they have and you could see them with bands like The Porters, Church of Confidence, Born To Lose, Deadline, Hudson Falcons, Al And The Black Cats and more, or as a headlining band. In November 2009, Pipes and Pints released their debut, full-length album entitled “Until We Die“ with the cooperation of Wolverine Records for Europe and Unrepentant Records for North and South America. Pipes And Pints are devoting the rest of this year and next to what they love the most - live shows. With plans to support the album with as many gigs and tours as possible, Pipes and Pints are looking forward to seeing you “until they die“. CONTACT INFO: WWW.MYSPACE.COM/PIPESANDPINTS 32

The Midwest typically isn’t viewed as an epicenter for great shows. Normally when watching TV. or even picking up another biking/horror publication you will notice a lot of the events( with a few exceptions) are generally on the coasts or very far south or north. This can be discouraging when money is tight or traveling far is just not an option. However despite what you may think the Midwest actually is home to some of the best shows and some of the best builders around. Sometimes you just have to keep your eyes open to find out what’s going on. July 24th we traveled up to the Platt County Fairgrounds in Cerro Gordo, IL. For the “Fat Hill Sloppy Seconds” show. We arrived Friday night at Cornerstone tavern for the pre-party and we were greeted by some familiar faces including Brian Elliott from Black Sunshine Customs and Members from The Bombers C.C., Paddy’s C.C., and Oukast C.C. The pre party was killer with awesome entertainment, cheap beer, and good times with some rad dudes! After the pre-party we decided to go see how some of the dudes from the paddy’s partied and man were we in for some good times. We headed to Lake Decatur and partied until the wee hours of the morning. After drinking beer for longer than any human being should, and participating in a lot of awesome activities, we decided it was time for some rest. We got up the next morning, and despite being in horrible shape ventured on to the fairgrounds early so we could watch the set-up and all the cars and bikes rolling in. To get rid of our horrible hangovers we quickly dove right back in to getting awesome. The weather was hot as fuck, but it was more than worth it to see some of the bikes and cars that showed up, not to mention hanging out with all the people there and meeting some new builders. All the people involved did an amazing job setting up the show, they had everything you would want in a show, awesome cars, the soy city roller girls, a dunk tank, cheap food, cheap beer, Pin-stripers, a pin-up contest and some amazing entertainment from Evan Mitchell, Throttle Junkies, and one of my all time favorite bands “The Afterdarks”. Towards the end of the day the weather went from hot as hell to a massive down pour. The great thing was is this didn’t seem to have hardly any effect on the crowd. The party did move inside towards the end but we were still rockin and Rollin playing drinking games and listening to some bad ass Afterdarks tunes. All in all I would have to say this show kicked major ass and can’t wait for next year’s “throbbing Thirds” show. I would also like to give a huge shout out to Justin Taylor for all his hospitality and showing us how Irish fucks party! This dude really hooked us up big time!

WARNING: Deer Crossing... Watch for Wolves?? By Robert Russell

Blessed with a great spring day, two awesome Harleys, and a beautiful woman, (Sandy… my wife of 23 years.) We rode off to meet up with some friends for diner. After a good meal and hanging out with friends we saddled up to head home. I was loading a pack of six bikes as we headed west on hwy 30. At about 8:45 we crossed old Highway 30 and into Byrnes Mill, MO. It was dark out and I slowed to 60 just to be safe, the Byes mill police have a reputation for no tolerance speeding. In an instant out great ride and our lives changed. A deer jumped in front of my motorcycle. The sound of the dear hitting my fairing and twisting around the left side of my ultra-classic is etched in my memory forever. The deer then slid across the highway and in front of sandy. Sandy hit the deer blind with her heritage soft tail. The motorcycle flipped several times and slid across the highway with her on it. I turned around and headed back to the accident not really knowing it was her and wondering why I had not gone down myself. As I approached the accident scene, sandy was on her back on the inside shoulder of the highway and her motorcycle was in the median (about 30 feet away) Immediate response from the iron wolves and strangers to get sandy medical help and to keep her calm was outstanding. Emergency response and accident scene training really helped. But as the helicopter flew away with sandy, I was unsure that I would ever get to say “I love you” to her again. After many surgeries and months or recovery sandy is as beautiful and strong as ever. Sandy’s “04” heritage soft tail was really damaged. I put the bike on the lift and began to disassemble. After disassembly was complete we inspected the frame and found no damage at all… that was a big relief. Now it is decision time for sandy and her new motorcycle. A tribal theme was decided on and laid the foundation for the rest of the build. The tins were taken to Jeff Hoskins for paint. A new chrome front end, bars, and full chrome controls were added, along with braided cables from h-d on the tank a new deluxe speedo and Arlen ness dash was installed. Vance and hives big radius pipes were the exhaust of choice. The tins arrived from Jeff Hoskins and wow did they look awesome. I decided to Install the reduced effort clutch kit while apart to make sandy more comfortable. A new engine guard and saddle bag guard were installed. Those guards really kept the bike off of sandy during the accident. They were heavily damaged but did their job. Chrome tribal mirrors. And levers with karzakn iso grips finished the bars. A new h-d heritage windshield assembly was installed. The final assembly weekend had finally arrived. Some friends from k.c. decided to come down to see Sandys first ride. We worked until 3 in the morning putting the finishing touches on the bike. Lucky for us the weather was great and after a few shake down test rides…. The heritage was done and did it look great. Sandy was ready to ride. So we escorted our friends from K.C. a short way and headed home. We put 100 miles on that day and sandy looked awesome on the freshly rebuilt heritage.

So

, lemme tell ya’s something you already know, July and early August were freakin HOT! The heat made it totally miserable to be on a bike even after the sun went down on some days. Tracy and I are ready for fall! Loads of events saturated August and we were unable to attend some of them due to my son being home on Pre-Deployment leave. Put that along with a lot of FT Magazine business and you have few hours for rest. It really has been a very stressful month for Tracy and I. At least up until the past few days. If you will all bear with me here I’ll explain. Last month’s issue you may have read an article by a member of the FT Army, Gary LaBrot. The article was called simply, “Integrity”. I haven’t yet had the chance to thank Gary for writing that article but hopefully he reads this and knows I “got it”. As you look through this mag you can’t help but notice we have a strong and very loyal advertising base. These advertisers are the reason you are holding the highest quality free magazine in the Midwest. We have this advertising base because of the way we conduct ourselves while doing business. Tracy and I are very proud of the code of “Integrity” the FT Army follows. You will never hear us running down another publication for the sake of advertising dollars. If you have to do that, then you must not have much faith in your product. We recommend advertising in ALL local free mags if that is in the budget. After all, we are trying to help them. Not hinder them. Anyone in the FT Army who didn’t follow this practice and code of “Integrity” have been cast out. No second or third strikes. Oh, I’m not gonna say that while out having beers with friends we don’t make a joke here and there. I think everyone in this industry does in fun, but there’s a time and place for that. The past month Tracy and I have met with or spoke to almost every advertiser we have, making sure all is well, and how their ads were working for them. I’m very proud to say that all seemed very happy and thankful for our efforts. As I’ve said before, they are more than just advertisers, they are our friends. In fact, we have made more friends than we can count while working for FT. At no time has that been proven more than the past few days. Tracy and I owe thanks to so many people I could never begin to cover all of them. One of our advertisers and friends, Kim and Jeff at TR’s Place in Belleville Illinois let us hold a surprise send off party for my son last night at their bar. They went out of their way to make sure everyone was waited on timely, and with the awesome attendance that could not have been easy. We were shocked when we pulled up at the bikes and cars in the parking lot waiting for our Marine and people just kept coming. To say we all had a blast would be an understatement and a simple “thank you” for all who came just does not seem like enough. It’s just one more thing that will drive Tracy and I as we do what we do in the ranks of the FTM Army. Now, as you’re reading this the FTM Army will be in final prep for Bike Fest! The buzz over this year is huge and for good reason. Just look in this issue and see all the bad ass bike builders who will be at the FTM Compound. This is also about the only time you will find the entire FTTM Army all in one place so stop by and have a beer with us all. We will have all kinds of FT Gear and Event Shirts on hand as well. This event is becoming more and more popular with people every year and we are all damn proud of that. You will never have better odds at winning a brand new Harley Davidson in the Passport Run and we look forward to calling your name in the drawing so DO THE PASSPORT RUN! Until next time... Deuces!!

On behalf of Tracy and myself, as well as the entire staff here at FTM Mag we would like to express our heartfelt sympathies to the Blue Knights MC Ill Ch 14, and for the entire family of Fairview Hgts Police Officer Jim Arendell. He was an avid motorcyclist and had a love for the outdoors. On Tuesday August 24th Officer Arendell was given his Last Ride by Ty Conklin of The Last Ride Motorcycle Hearse Co. It was a beautiful day and one of the most powerful processions I have ever seen. A true testament to the respect and love felt for this man. I spoke to Ted Harris, a friend of Jims and fellow Blue Knight. He told me that in all his many years in police work, Jim was the only man he had ever knew who didn’t let his job taint his outlook on life. He looked for the best in everyone he met on, or off the job. We have all lost a truly, truly good man and he will for sure be missed.

Full Throttle

M U L Y S A Y SAFET ike Safety Sport B

BY T.J. MILES Cruiser, Cruiser, Cruiser... wait there goes a SPORT BIKE! Hey, how did he throttle through that curve at over 100 mph and then bust out at over 12,000 rpm as he hit the straight away? A true motorcyclist understands, to a certain degree, the thrill ride that this person is on. Hell, if they’re like me, they have been there and have mixed emotions of days gone by or maybe even a slight amount of jealousy. Sometimes you have to give up one thing to have another. Those that have never been on a sport bike cannot even imagine the raw power to weight ratio and suspension difference between a sport bike and cruiser that allows a sport bike to accomplish 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and tear into twisty’s at over 100 mph. An electronically limited top speed of 186 mph off of the show room floor? You bet! After market ECM tuners, air and exhaust make em’ even faster. I’ve found that only a small percentage of sport bike riders are riding like maniacs on our roadways. Most are true enthusiast dedicated to the passion of riding and consider motorcycle safety a very serious topic. It’s too bad that a small percentage of reckless riders give the rest of this population a bad name. The greater population of sport bike riders take motorcycling to a whole new level. They wear motorcycle safety gear that is armored and know the limitations of their motorcycles. They ride for the thrill of riding and only socialize at the end of the riding day. This is the type of purity that most of us have forgotten about. A sport bike can be a very dangerous machine to a novice rider. “With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility!” The military realized this only after they started losing more military personnel to sport bikes than to war or anything else each year. So, they incorporated a mandatory sport bike rider course for all personnel who ride sport bike. I am good friends with one of the creators of the Military Sport Bike Rider Course. This course is so good that the Motorcycle Safety Foundation has adopted it and will be offering it to the civilian population in the near future. The Sport Bike Rider Course helps personnel properly set up the suspension on their bike. This is something that all sport bike riders should learn before they ride. They start off by setting the Sag. The Sag refers to the amount the bike settles with its own weight and then with rider weight while taking stiction into account. Stiction refers to the amount the suspension sticks due to internal friction. They then tune the rebound and compression (front and rear). It is very important to have the suspension set up correctly. Anything else could mean a compromise in safety. A good sport bike rider consistently tunes his suspension as his riding skills progress to match his level of aggressiveness. The second subject that the Sport Bike Rider Course approaches is “curves”. They instruct students on how to judge the curve, set an entry speed, look through the curve, lean the bike and throttle through at a safe speed while taking their personal skill level and the bikes abilities into account. I am only able to cover the highlights. The details of this course would be much more than a simple article. I asked a friend of mine who rides a sport bike why he only rides with sport bikes. He told me that it actually hurts his wrist to ride with cruisers. The slower speed doesn’t create enough body lift to keep the weight off of his wrist. Also, he finds no thrill in riding twisty’s at the speed that we consider fast for our bikes. He said that cruiser rides have too many stops and not enough ride. I respect his honesty and certainly understand his perspective on riding. Who wouldn’t? It’s honest! Sport Bike Riders are safe and they certainly enjoy the ride. They just have a different perspective. However, cruiser and sport bike riders share a lot of the same ideas as it pertains to motorcycle safety and have a lot to learn from each other. Could you imagine a cruiser with the power to weight ratio and suspension of a sport bike. Hold onto your hat, some motorcycle companies have already started!

LAKE OF THE OZARKS H-D

A Biker Wedding

A couple of years ago in the fall of the year, I noticed a lady biker outside the local convenience store drinking coffee & trying to warm her hands. I said Hi, introduced myself & ask where she was traveling. This was Kerry & she had her son riding behind her. She was coming from Houston, Mo & was warming up before heading home another 40 miles down the road. This was the beginning of our friendship, as I met her again & again on many area rides. This week, I attended her wedding. This was a biker wedding in every sense of the word, from the Harley Davidson emblem on the cake (which I might add read “Hopelessly Devoted”) to the procession of bikers following them from the wedding back to Summersville, MO.

Kerry bought her 1st bike in ’06 a 650 Yamaha, as an RN she put over 30K miles on it in 2 years doing home nurse visits. Jay had rode from the age of 12 but, unfortunely in his twenties had a wreck totaling his bike. They had known each other for a while & shortly after asking her out & taking a ride on her bike, he decided to buy a ’95 HD Dyna….. just like Jay, older but, still gets around & can run with young ones. “Who said that???” Ever since then they ride side by side most everywhere they go. Their travels have included such places as Bike Week-Daytona, Key West, FL, Little Sturgis, KY, & Fayetteville, AR. The best trip the 2 have made so far is the one to Alley Springs for their wedding Aug. 9th. After a beautiful ceremony with fellow bikers, family & friends, the bride joined the groom on the back of his bike & left the park riding up an aisle lined with bikes & riders ready to follow them to the “Haunted Hut” for the reception. Jay built the Hut, famous for the greatest ice cream in town, for his best friend Mark. The original Hut was started in the 70’s by Mark’s father. This is the home of the annual “Dogs Off A Leash Poker Run” to be held Aug. 28th, one of the largest in southern MO. Jay & Kerry York, hope to ride west next year & take in some scenery, ending in Sturgis, SD. They got married with black hills gold & she wants an anniversary ring made of the same. “Did you hear that, Jay?” You all are great bikers & friends, Best wishes for many long years together.

Biker owned and operated is definitely the theme for this new saloon at the lake. Shady’s At The Lake in Lake Ozark, MO is the name and awesome food is what they do there. Along with cold beer, good drinks, and a fun atmosphere. The owners Dave and Holly looked around thier native St. Louis area, but could not find the right location. Then they stumbled upon this location at the lake and as Dave says “we felt at home when we walked through the door and that’s what we want others to feel when they venture through the joint“. So after a lot of work they finally got the joint opened, and a month later at there grand opening you could tell the hard work had paid off. Blackdog and the Rainmakers from St. Charles MO rocked the mixed crowd of locals and a large group of friends and family from the St. Louis biking community led by Shady Jack. Holly and Dave have been friends with Jack and the family for many years, Jack often claims Holly as his other daughter. Holly has been one of Jack’s “Shady Girls” for years even back to the campground days, and helped him with the startup of his last few adventures. She has listened and learned a lot from Jack over the years and remembers one of Jack’s quotes “Life dealt me a bad hand until I realized I was the dealer” as Holly says its time to be “The Dealer”. So when they started talking about getting there own joint they went to see Jack and he gave them a crash course on how to be a successful saloon operator. It will be fun seeing how the students do over the years.

If you are coming to Bikefest stop in Shady’s. There will be live music all day Friday and Saturday, Full Throttle Magazine and other vendors set up in the parking lot, burnout contests, and 50/50 drawings to benefit local charities. Shady’s will be a Passport Stop for the Bikefest so join them for great prices on drinks and some of the best food you will find at the lake. With over 16 appetizers, which are ½ price with your Passport coupon they have something for everyone’s taste to get the meal started. After a few apps its time to move to the real food and that’s when you will find some very unique sandwiches and pizzas. Try a Chef Salad, BBQ Buffalo Chicken Pizza, Jalapeno Cheeseburger, Dirty Burger, Triple Decker BLT or Turkey Club, or the “Famous UPS Mess” WOW what a menu! This just an example of the great food you will find on this menu and all meals are under $10. The joint is open 7 days a week 10 AM till 1:30 AM and the best part is, the kitchen is open until midnight everyday and Happy Hour is 3-7 PM. Come join Holly and the girls for Twisted Tuesday’s Bike/Hot Rod Night every Tuesday Night through the end of Oct. Sponsored by Monster Energy Drink, KRMS, 93.5 FM The Rock and of course THE GREAT FOLKS AT FULL THROTTLE MIDWEST MAGAZINE!!!
