Happy New Year Midwest motorcycle enthusiasts! Just when we thought the industry was taking a hit from the economy, our advertisers have proved us wrong. It’s obvious the weak will parish and the strong will survive, in this day and age. We would like to take this time to introduce a new member to the Harley-Davidson family of dealerships. Bootheel Harley-Davidson in Scotty City MO is open for business. Stop in and say hi to Rob, Jason and the rest of the crew either for their upcoming event on January 29th, or just to take a look around. January is a cold, sometimes snowy month that causes us to have that old thing called “cabin fever”. Well with some of the great events that the local dealerships are throwing; you have no need to stay in! One great event for a good cause you should definitely attend is The Absolute Fighting Challenge to knock out juvenile diabetes. Bootheel Harley-Davidson will be holding a Ring Girl Search on Saturday January 29th at 2pm in Scott City MO. Log on to www.bootheelhd.com for more information. In this issue you can check out the boys from FNA Custom Cycles, and see some of their amazing work. Also, there’s a pretty good read provided by Jerry & Tracy titled “The Spirits of Christmas”. It’s definitely a heartwarming tale A bit about the cover: The FTM Army is group of like-minded hot rodders and bikers who love the camaraderie of those who share the same passion. Join the ARMY! As always we would like to take an opportunity to thank our amazing advertisers. They are the reason this magazine stays FREE to the public. When you stop in to patronize these guys, tell ‘em you saw them in Full Throttle Midwest! Stay tuned to facebook for our latest updates. Our sites are stronger than ever!

Safety Alert! Happy New Year FTM Army Readers! If you are like Aaron and I, you are not riding as much as you would like because of the bad weather. This is the perfect time to get some things in order for the upcoming riding season. This article will explain in detail, things you can do right now to make sure you have the proper safeguards in place this coming riding season. Below, we detail one of the most important things you can do this winter to protect you and your family. When was the last time you saw or heard about a motorcycle crash that was caused by another vehicle? When was the last time you heard about a crash in which the biker was less injured than the driver of the car or truck causing the crash? Aaron and I have been handling motorcycle crash cases for almost a decade and we have never seen a situation in which a biker was injured less than the automobile driver. The odds are stacked against us as soon as we hop on. Despite these odds, we still can’t wait until riding season rolls around. There are risks inherent with riding motorcycles, no doubt about it. Inherent risks aside, what can you do to protect yourself in the event you are in a crash? Make sure you have insurance that protects you in the event you are in a crash that is someone else’s fault! I know as soon as you read insurance, many of you wanted to flip the page. Don’t. This is crucial information for you and your family. Aaron and I can tell you from our vast experience representing seriously injured bikers and their families, that most motorcycle riders have inadequate insurance coverage. Heck, years ago before we started representing personal injury victims, we both had inadequate insurance. Whenever we come across a rider with the appropriate coverage, it is because they or a family member were previously in a crash, and they have been educated about insurance coverage. Stay with me, these next few paragraphs could literally change your life or the life of a fellow biker. Motorcycle insurance is IMPORTANT, and the good news is that it is simple to understand. The problem is that agents do not usually educate people on the different types of coverage. Having inappropriate coverage when you are in a crash can be a life altering issue. How do you know how to navigate the insurance world? Aaron and I offer free insurance reviews for all FTM Army Readers. All you have to do is give us a call. Unfortunately, the phrase “motorcycle insurance” is extremely vague and most riders are not familiar with the different types of coverage available. Most riders call their agent and tell them they got a bike and they need coverage. Sometimes people will shop around for the lowest rates, which often means the least amount of coverage. Missouri requires automobile and motorcycle owners to carry minimum Liability Insurance Coverage. Liability insurance only provides coverage to the other person if you cause an accident. Liability coverage will cover you for the damage you cause to someone else or their

property up to your liability coverage limits. Liability coverage does nothing to protect yourself from the negligence of other drivers. The required minimum liability insurance in Missouri is 25/50. This means if you cause injuries to someone, your insurance will cover you up to $25,000 per person and $50,000 per occurrence. ALERT: When your agent says you have “full coverage”, that does not mean you are fully protected. I hear this at least once week from new clients. “My agent told me I had full coverage.” This is misleading and agents are doing a complete disservice to motorcycle riders when they tell them they have “full coverage.” It is important to understand that 25/50 liability coverage is typically the most expensive. By this I mean that you can increase the minimum required limits for a few dollars added to your premium. With today’s astronomical medical costs, $25,000 isn’t much protection. If you injure someone (maybe a passenger) and they suffer damages in excess of $25,000, your personal assets will be at stake. Don’t put yourself in this position. Get your insurance coverage squared away during the off season while you have time to think about it. At least make the call to your agent and ask what the price difference is. You will be very surprised at the minimal increase. Also, shoot Aaron or myself an email with any questions you may have. We answer insurance questions all the time for fellow riders and their families who are wondering if they are properly covered. In addition, make sure you read your insurance policy once you get it in the mail. If you need help understanding it, give us a call. Insurance companies make mistakes all the time. If they made a mistake with your policy, you need to know now, not after a crash when you need coverage. How do you protect yourself against other drivers? This is CRUCIAL for every rider. CRUCIAL! I have seen so many lives destroyed and families torn apart because of riders failing to carry adequate insurance coverage that protects them in the event they are in a crash caused by someone else. For your own protection and the protection of your loved ones, you MUST get Uninsured and Underinsured insurance coverage. Here is why:

the minimum requirement under Missouri Law. Obviously in either case, $25,000 is never going to be enough to cover the damages and injuries to a seriously injured rider. Now is the time to address these issues. Not after an accident. TIP: Motorcycle riders are able to purchase higher limits of Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM) and Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM) as an option on their insurance policies for a very small increase in their premiums. Let’s say that you purchased a $250,000 policy of Uninsured Motorist Coverage and a $250,000 policy of Underinsured Motorist Coverage (Ask your insurance agent, you will be seriously surprised how cheap it really is). If you have $250,000 in UIM and a driver hits you that only has the Missouri minimum of $25,000 in coverage, your Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM) will kick in to cover you up to $250,000! Similarly, if that other driver that hits you doesn’t have any liability insurance at all, you are still covered up to $250,000 under your Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM). These exact scenarios happen all too frequently for Missouri motorcycle riders. It is CRUCIAL to purchase these two types of coverage. It should be a top priority for every motorcycle rider on the road. What about the cost? For those of you that are still skeptical about purchasing UM and UIM coverage, Aaron just purchased both types of coverage with limits of $500,000 for his new bike and it only increased his premium $8.00! $8.00 for all that protection. No one wants to think about getting in a crash, but in the unfortunate event you are, wouldn’t it be nice to know you have $250,000, $500,000, $1 million, or more in coverage to get you and your family through the horrible months after a crash? In addition, you can secure excess/umbrella coverage for additional protection in $1 million increments for a couple hundred bucks a year. PLEASE, take our advice, we see bad accidents with minimal insurance coverage all the time which destroy the lives of riders and their families. Call your insurance agent today and purchase UM and UIM coverage. Don’t ride your motorcycle without it!

The vast majority of automobile drivers in Missouri carry only the bare minimum of Liability Insurance Coverage. This is $25,000 per crash. That means if a car runs into you on your motorcycle and it’s their fault, the most insurance money you will ever get out of that other driver is $25,000. Most of us riders know that if we are involved in a crash with a full sized automobile, our medical bills are going to be much greater than $25,000.This amount doesn’t even include lost wages or future medical care that may be needed. Further, what if that other driver has failed to purchase insurance altogether? Then we are stuck with the bare minimums of $25,000 under our own Uninsured Motorist Coverage, which is also

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!! Ok now that we got that out of the way I want to get to what I had planned to do a few months back. And that’s JAWS TAKE OF THE LAKE, I know what a lot of you are thinking, what the f#@$ it’s only 3 months late. And you are right but a lot has happened in the last few months. This is going to be a two part story the first one will cover some of the people I met and a few stories of what a few beers and a bunch of bikers can pull off. And the second part will cover a kick ass; well let’s see how the best way to put this… Ok well if you lived there you would call it your home , but if you were an invited guest as we were you would call it a kick ass castle, but that’s the second part. So let’s get started with my take of THE LAKE OF THE OZARKS BIKEFEST 2010. We took our time going down Friday morning and we took the scenic route, all back roads. George, Mike (pockets), my wife Michele and myself. We decided to leave early and grab some breakfast in St. Clair. You couldn’t have asked for a better day to ride, the weather was perfect we arrived around 2 pm at our hotel. And for those of you who were down there Friday, I’m sure you got caught in the backup on 54 where they were trying to get some last minute blacktop laid. After checking in we decided to run over to the Full throttle compound and check things out, and have a couple beers, which we did. And that’s when I met Sue Daniels our writer from the lake for the first time, as always it’s nice to meet new people and her and her husband were great. Sooner or later I’m going to get to sit down with Jerry and Tracy from across the river and have a beer. I’ve only met them twice only in passing, but maybe this will be the year, we will see, also got to see a lot of the ARMY, including our editors Steve and Brandie. Then it was on over to the lakes newest hot spot Shady’s at the lake where we got some buckets of beer and some food ,which by the way was awesome. By now a lot of the group we were with is starting to arrive. Oh shit I forgot to mention Heath and Lori from Wisconsin met us at the hotel they had been in Branson for a few days and rode up to meet us and party hardy. Which we did, we decide to stay at Shady’s and tell everyone to meet us there, so now the beers are starting to go down good. After all cold beer (at a great price I might add) good friends, which while we were sitting there I heard an unmistakable voice at the table next to us and low and behold Craig Meyer

and his girlfriend Beth and some friends of theirs are sitting next to us and the reason I mention them is that’s who took us to the castle Saturday morning but like I said that’s part 2. By now it’s starting to get around 9 so we figure we better get closer to the hotel and carry this party on. Well Craig’s party decided to join us and we headed to another bar right across from our hotel, so we parked our bikes and walked over and continued our party by now I’m about half f$#@ed up, hell I think everyone in our group was. As time went on the group dwindled down and the last rebels were I and heath and we were still rocking and rolling so now I started to mingle with the crowd. First we met some folks from Colorado they weren’t on bikes but they were on vacation. Funny thing as I wrote about over the past few month my trip out there in August and here I am back in Missouri and they were vacationing here. Anyway after I annoyed them with my bullshit they decided it was time to go, which was a quick exit I might add. So it was time to move on after all it was just me and Heath at the table again by ourselves so we grabbed a couple of beers and moved on. That’s when I met our next victims, Sandi Houston, her boyfriend Doug Yarrington, and another couple with them Ronna and Tim Lutjen. They were down for Bikefest and had motorcycles, so now we were in our realm, only problem was they didn’t believe me when I told them I wrote for Full Throttle Midwest Magazine, which I guess if I had been in there shoes and a couple of shit faced guys just walked up and started talking I would have probably felt the same way. Well I went to get a magazine and you guessed it, they were out. So I don’t remember if it was my idea or Heath’s to go back over to the hotel and get one so we could prove it. (Like I said we were shit faced). At any rate my man Heath made the trip over and got a copy. Hell I remember Sandi saying I believed you when you said it, well maybe she did. Well I asked if they minded talking with me for a little while and they said sure. Well it turns out that Sandi is trying to start a business and we got to talking about that. I asked what it was she was going to sell and she explained it , she puts rhinestone studs on helmets, now first thing I thought was I have seen a few helmets with studs glued to them and if you hit one with your finger they just fall off. Sandi explained to me mine are not like that and asked if I wanted to see one. And now she had me curious, and I said hell yea you got one with you and she said she had two , hers and Ronna’s and they would go get them. When I first seen them I knew she had taken some time on them, and as I started to pick her brain a little she explained the process to me. In Ronna’s helmet alone there were 4000 rhinestones and before the stone is set, it is drilled and each stone is set in place one at a time. I don’t know about you guys or gals but to drill 4000 F%$#ing holes and then toothpicks and tweezers and all the time, I would be F%$#ing crazy and blind. But not Sandi get this, she says that’s her relaxation. Now I don’t know about any of you but I can think of a lot more relaxing things to do. Me I like to ice up a case of Budweiser and then , well who gives a F%$# it really don’t matter if you got cold beer then let your imagination run wild, but it doesn’t consist of going crazy and blind I promise you that. Well since that night I have e-mailed back and forth with Sandi a few times and before I wrote this I contacted her to see if anything was new and I have just learned her dream is one step closer to reality, she has just set up a web page . Now how cool would it be if we were to help her get started and become a reality, so here is her web site check it out. Its www.skullkandibysandi.com hell I also learned yours truly is on the page modeling a helmet, don’t worry I’m not trying to start a modeling career. Well that’s it for this month remember next month the castle, till then: REMEMBER KEEP THE SHINY SIDE UP AND THE RUBBER SIDE DOWN!!!!!!

FNA Custom Cycles By Peter Schneider

In the past year or so I’ve had some amazing experiences traveling, meeting awesome builders, and making some great new friends along the way. This past August, I was up north in Lakeland, Florida to meet up with Eric Allard of FNA Custom Cycles and check out what he had goin’ on at the shop. Needless to say, I was absolutely blown away! The term, “thinking outside the box” would be an understatement. Most builders seem to stick to a certain brand (Harley, triumph, etc.) while Eric pushes the envelope building bikes out of any brand motor presented to him. He keeps the Attitude, “you can make em’ all cool!”, and he definitely can. FNA takes a unique approach to their builds, making 90% of their components in house, from the crazy front ends(on the BMW) to their extreme rear sections (on the Yamaha) each bike displays Eric’s amazing fabrications skills. Most of the bikes have so much fab work to show, that you forget to notice they aren’t painted. Each bike produced from FNA truly is a work of art. If you ever find yourself in Lakeland, be sure to look up FNA, swing by, pick up some beer along the way, and check out what they got goin’ on. It’ll be and experience you won’t regret for sure! For more info on there shop or to see what they have goin’ on next you can check em’ out online:www.fnacustomcycles.com or check em’ out on facebook.

Holiday Bash 2010 Photography by Nichole Grodski

Wright City - Missouri - 2010.

This little shop known as Bare Knuckle Choppers, maybe you’ve heard the name, maybe you’ve dreamed of riding one of their fully custom hand build machines on two wheels, or perhaps your two wheeled beast has one or two of their american made parts on it. Either way these throttle junkies headed by El Presidente Paul Wideman had their 7th Annual Holiday Bash this past November.

Recap

I was there, were you? For those who answered no, here’s what you missed! A beautiful November evening, which is an exception for that time of the year as you all know, the gods of rock n roll and hell raisin’ shined bright for this gang of rebels. Loads of flame throwing hot rods, killer chopped skinny vtwins, massive bomb fires, some rock n roll, lots of heavy metal, and enough food for an army was just a few of the highlights of this bash. While the fire burned bright, I screamed obscenities into the microphone, on the verge of blowing up the rented PA system, the Bare Knuckle Crew passed around the moonshine, barked at the moon and sent the last bang for 2010 out by way of 2 massive mortar cannon shots to the sky. Bare Knuckle Choppers has a lot of great things coming your way for 2011, this is a first of many sights you’ll see from these gearheads hiding in the woods of Missouri. Cheers!

In The Beginning. For this month’s article I decided to tell the story about how Johnny and I met. Also Johnny is still brain dead from being on the road for so long. It all started in 2004 in Sturgis at the Full Throttle Saloon. One of the bikes I wanted to shoot was a magenta pink and green chopper owned by a guy named Johnny Lange. The first thing everyone notices about Johnny is that he’s the spitting image of Kid Rock. I interviewed Johnny, shot his bike, and found out that he was a very cool cat. From that day on we have become good friends. That night we made plans to meet back at the Full Throttle and have a few drinks. Also that day, while I was interviewing and filming Johnny, there were midget wrestling matches going on. Yes, midget wrestling. It’s the same as the WWE, but much smaller and, in my opinion, way more entertaining. At 6:30 that evening I finished shooting and drove back to the hotel. Paul and Darryl, my buddies that were arrested the night before where also done with their day in court and met me twenty minutes later. As it turned out, the night in jail didn’t go exactly the way Darryl had hoped. After we left, the cops told Darryl to strip, gave him a jump suit, a rubber mat, and told him to sleep on the floor. When he woke up two hours later he discovered he was in a cell filled with hardcore criminals awaiting trial. He also told me that breakfast was very interesting and he was encouraged to share his grape jelly, which he did. When his case came up in the courtroom, the D.A. looked at his file and told him that he should get a lawyer. His blood alcohol was only .001 over the legal limit. And because he was stopped on the side of the road, there was a good chance that he could probably get out of a DUI. Darryl took the D.A.’s advice and got a lawyer and, sure enough, they let him off. Of course, he had to plea to a lesser charge and when it was all said and done the state still got their $1,500, but Darryl didn’t get a DUI. Over the last few years both Sturgis and Daytona have really cracked down during Bike Week for the simple reason that they make lots of money in fines. Darryl was pretty beat up from having only a few hours of sleep on a concrete floor, but he felt bad that Paul, a guy he hardly knew, wasted the entire day helping him get out of jail. Shit! Paul was only in town for a few days and one of them was already shot, so Darryl sucked it up and said he wanted to go out and party. Of course, Paul was psyched just to do something other than hang around the jail. I told them that I was going to head over to the Full Throttle. What I didn’t know was that the real Kid Rock was playing just up the road from the Full Throttle at the Buffalo Chip Campground. On the way there we sat in traffic for hours, and when we finally got there we had to wedge our bike into the parking lot. The joint was just starting to pick up. A few minutes after we arrived, a bunch of midget wrestlers showed up and they still had their scary clown make-up on from performing earlier. The bunch of us found a spot at the bar and ordered drinks. People definitely noticed us with the midgets, and many of them knew me from American Thunder. Then my new best friend Johnny called me from the front parking lot and asked if I could come out and walk him in. I said, “Sure, why not?” When I met him out front I noticed that he had the Kid Rock cowboy hat and sunglasses on, so we walked into the bar and that’s when the fun started. The crowd around us parted and people started saying things like “Hey, there’s Kid Rock.” Then it dawned on me: The real Kid Rock had just finished

playing up the road and most of the people from the concert where now filing in at the Full Throttle. The timing was unbelievable. By the time Johnny and I got back to the bar there were hundreds of people and the buzz was growing. At that point, a guy we knew started taking pictures, moving around like he was some kind of professional photographer, and the flash was going off every two seconds, so that really amped up the crowd. Within minutes there were no less than fifty drinks on the bar in front of us and a thousand or more people closing in to get a closer look. Because it’s never Johnny’s intention to pretend he’s Kid Rock, all of us frantically started telling everyone who was asking that he wasn’t Kid Rock, but the more we said he wasn’t, the more people thought he was. People were actually saying with a wink, “Yeah right, I know you guys are just trying to play it down.” I guess people believe what they want, no matter what. Finally, we all gave up saying anything and just went with it. The midgets jumped up onto the bar and started dancing around giving Jello shots to all the girls. There were people fifty deep standing on chairs taking pictures and poising with Johnny. It was surreal. Then, out of the crowd, this five-foot nothing girl pushes her way over to Darryl. She tells him she was sorry that they had to meet under unfortunate circumstances but she loves Kid Rock and could he please help her get a picture with him. Darryl, exhausted, drunk, and in the middle of frenzy suddenly realizes that this girl is the D.A. from Deadwood who helped him get out of jail earlier that day. No knowing what else to do he said “sure” and escorted her up to Johnny, who posed with her flipping the bird. The insanity goes on for several more hours, and then finally Johnny sneaks out just before the bar closes down. It was a pretty wild night, but not the end of the story. Four months later Darryl got a Christmas card in the mail. On the front was the picture of the D.A. with Johnny taken that night. Inside it reads: [Jay: Do you have the card?--PS] If the D.A. from Deadwood is reading this, I’m sorry to kill your buzz. But this story was just too good not to tell. If you want to hear more stories like this pick up a copy of my book “The Biker’s Handbook, becoming part of the Motorcycle Culture”: at our web site at stripclubchoppers.com or any Barnes & Noble, Borders or Amazon. BROWN BAGpresents PROPAGANDA

SOUTH SIDE 5

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

REGIONAL

South Side 5 are veterans to the St. Louis rock scene. They have played every club in town from the Hard Rock Cafe to the VooDoo Lounge. This band prides itself on doing charity events. Even after raching the national level, they stick to the motto of good karma working with Biker’s For Babies, Children’s Miracle Network, MD, cancer benefits, etc... Their debut cd “Controversy” is on the airwaves currently from Hollywood, CA to the mountains of Colorado and can be found on the shelves of CD Warehouse on Tesson Ferry Road and are always available at their live shows. After ripping up Full Throttle’s 4th anniversary party, these guys are destined for rock stardom. With their rich history of musicians, the current line up consists of Larry Hunter - Frankie Stix - Mad Moe - Dennis (the Menace) Pettit who toured around the world with Marty Balin formally of Jefferson Airplane, and of course the band’s frontman Stump who is most infamously known from the Guns N Rose’s riot back in 1991. Stump got to tell his side of the story in the newly released book by John Neiman “K-SHE 40 Years Of Rock”, a must have for any rocker’s collection. The band would like to thank Tom (Real Rock) Terbrock for all his help and, of course, his famous cowbell! Also Katy Kruze, the Dave Glover Show and Walter Ray of CD Warehouse. So keep your ear to K-SHE and friend up on Facebook for upcoming shows. Peace & Love to all our friends & family.

PADUCAH, KENTUCKY from Paducah, Kentucky. They play an in-your-face style of punk that many find hard to categorize, though hard core comes up often in reviews. Their musical background is ecclectic with influences ranging from Black Flag and Minor Threat to Rush and CCR. They believe music is supposed to be gripping, moving, and ripping and that is their formula. They recently signed to Jailhouse! INTERNATIONAL FREEDUMB

Freedumb is a three-headed beast that has developed in the industrial MOSS/OSLO, NORWAY wastelands in the outskirts of Oslo for 7 years. It delivers a suckerpunch of a debut album that blasts straight through your balls and continiues to travel so deep past your rectum opening it starts to feel real good. It`s a mix between everything within the rock genre that`s good, from the times before things started to repeat itself. 80`s hardcore, good ol` punk rock and thrashy metal has been thrown into a pot, spiked with cheap alcohol and whatever spices within reach and boiled down to one cheeky fucker. Take it as a sidedish, a main course or as implied earlier, up the wazoo... Either way, this record is gonna rock your intestines! The release of ”The Freedumb Curse” gives us music that expands all of Freedumb`s 7 years of existence, which may indicate that the band has been laying on their backs. This is true, and for this Freedumb blames the sweet taste of beer and some kind of curse....? But forget the curse, times are changing and Freedumb believe they have shaken off every bad spell there is. The new decade is owned by Freedumb. Freedumb is currently in the studio recording new songs for an upcoming album. It will hopefully be out next summer. CONTACT INFO: www.myspace.com/freedumbfromnorway 30

KARMA

This month I’d like to address Karma. The old “reap what you sow” theory. I understand that Karma is the law of moral causation. The theory of Karma is a fundamental doctrine in Buddhism. This belief was prevalent in India before the advent of the Buddha. Nevertheless, it was the Buddha who explained and formulated this doctrine in the complete form in which we have it today. My intention is not to pickapart or insult any particular religion. What I would like to do is express my opinion and give a few examples of why I believe Karma is lost in a sea of chaos and the likelihood of a mystical force that regulates cause and effect based on a given persons actions is little more than wishful thinking born of a need to explain the inexplicable or to control the uncontrollable. You see, it’s easier to make up an invisible “equalizer” if you will, than to except the fact that there is no answer, and if there were, you will probably never know it. People have an insatiable need to have all the answers, and dammit if they can’t figure it out they will make something up to placate themselves. Back when we didn’t understand how birds flew we attributed the miracle of flight to the gods. Then, through time, flight was explained through science and the laws of physics. Once we had those answers the gods moved on to the explanation for the next great mystery. I was prompted to write this article after reading a news bulletin about a man who had been acquitted for the rape and murder of two children in the 1990’s. The prosecutors had matched his dental records with bite marks on the bodies. There was also indisputable DNA evidence linking him to the crime. He was incarcerated for 8 months while awaiting trial. When his day before the judge came he was set free because the prosecution had improperly obtained evidence. That’s right, because of a simple breach in protocol a child murderer and rapist was set free. Oh but wait, it gets better. After his release he bought a lottery ticket and won 178 million dollars. Where was Karma on this day? Where was it the day the children were placed in the ground? You see, we live in a world of utter Chaos, where anything can happen to anyone for any reason, regardless of your many good deeds. So the next time someone does you wrong, my advice would be, don’t count on Karma or “what goes around comes around, because the person who just wronged you may have just bought a lottery ticket. Comments and replies may be sent to ft.soldier@fullthrottlemidwest.com See ya next month. Gary LaBrot.

After spending the majority of his life around motorcycles, Eric Bess owner of Flying Tiger Motorcycles spent the last eight years working in the motorcycle industry for Kawasaki Motors. He started on the road, and then eventually moved to California from St. Louis 6 years ago. He worked in the Quality Assurance Department of Kawasaki in Irvine, California as a test rider and tech. While his main responsibility was the testing and evaluation of Kawasaki’s entire product line, he also dabbled in road racing, dual-sport, and the National Hare & Hound desert racing series. Times being what they are, Eric found himself as part of a large corporate layoff in the spring of 2010. No longer comfortable having his life in the hands of others, Eric decided to open his own shop with the simple idea to avoid everything he did not like about the established shops in the area. Flying Tiger Motorcycles has no preferences as to what type or style of motorcycle customers have. “We are an enthusiast shop where two wheels of all kinds are welcome,” Eric says. “There will never be any kind of attitude given here. I like to think of us as a place for people that don’t have a place. Somewhere that everyone can feel comfortable and be treated fairly. If they are not, I want them to tell me.” Bess says that while he likes all bikes, his personal interests are in vintage Japanese/European motorcycles. “I really like the café and bobber movement happening right now. It has been around for a long time, but now it seems more people are finding interest in the classic Japanese bikes. I see this genre becoming the “new chopper”, except these bikes are thousands cheaper. Plus, it’s fun to have variety. You can build something very cool from a $500 Yamaha or a $1,500 BSA rat/recto. I also see this trend bring in new riders. That’s why we’re here, because bikes are cool and it’s all about fun.” Flying Tiger has plans to expand their shop in the spring. “We are working out the details that will allow us the front space in our current building. Right now we are easy to get to, but hard to find. The alley entrance confuses people, but we can guide them in. The storefront will gives us twice the space and include frontage along Manchester in Maplewood. If everything works out we will be offering some clothing and accessories, along with used bikes, café projects, and consignment bikes.” The website is still in the works, but you can visit Flying Tiger’s fan page at Facebook/Flying Tiger Motorcycles, or give them a call at 314-504-5496.

A letter from the illinois editors Ya Know

it’s been one hell of a year. Ups, downs, sideways, and days I can’t even remember. All in all I’d say Tracy and I had a blast working in the ranks of this great Magazine and with everyone who supports it. We have met more good people than I can count. We have been brought closer into the heart of this magazine and I gotta tell ya, it’s exiting as hell to us. We work for, and among some of the most kick ass people in this industry and they have become more than just friends. Steve and his brothers may not be blood, but after all they have done for us I will always consider them my brothers. And I always have my brothers back. So before I go any farther, thank you guys for going so far out of your way for Tracy and I. Some of the highlights for us in 2010 are simply some of the people we met and now call our friends. Solid ass people like Darren of “Liquid Illusions”, Brian of “Black Sunshine”, Kevin of “Billy The Kid” and Brad Fink of Iron Age Tattoos, who took the time from his very busy schedule to tattoo a portrait of my son on my arm before he left for Afghanistan. When you’re supported by industry stand outs like these guys, ya must be doing something right! Advertisers? Man, we got the best damn family of advertisers out there. Far too many to name here but well deserving of a shout out. We look very forward to expanding that family in 2011. They are the reason we can give you the highest quality magazine in the Midwest. At times I’ve been pretty harsh in my intros here, lashing out at our competitors. I’m not one to hold my tongue very well and my temper can sometimes over run my better judgment. But looking back at 2010 I have to be thankful we do have other mags in the area. They keep us on our toes here and prove to us month after month we are setting the bar. This magazine is put together by a very small and close knit group of die hards from cover to back page right here in St Louis and its done OUR WAY. It is also printed right here in St Louis and we take great pride that we are supporting local jobs. It’s not easy, and requires very long hours but at the end of each month when you hold the finished product, it’s all worth it thanks to your reaction and feedback. We held some fantastic events in 2010 that have helped to propel this magazine to new heights and gain not just local but national attention. Grease Gears and Grooves and Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest are events we are most proud of here at FT Midwest. We are totally pumped about new developments on these events! Hot Summer Bike Nights at the Fairview Heights Illinois Pasta House set a whole new standard for bike nights in its very first year in 2010. In 2011, we will be back along with Thunder Alley, Chick Fritz Dist, and Frieze H-D for an even bigger year than last. Full Throttle Fridays will be BACK in 2011 due to popular demand and constant requests. Stay tuned here and facebook for locations. It’s gonna be awesome!

FT Army Fall Friends Ride with Jerry and Tracy

There is nothing Tracy and I like to do better than ride with our friends so summer of 2010 we put on a FT Army friends ride. Our destination would be one that not a lot of people from the St. Louis area know about. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in southern Illinois and not only did everyone have a blast, we came back with enough wine that we all felt like bootleggers. We promised everyone we would do it again in the fall, and so we did. But this time it was a little different. The meeting place for the fall ride would be the HiHo Café in Belleville Ill. Tracy and I arrived early and that don’t happen very often. Just ask our friends! As we sat and ordered breakfast we heard a few bikes pull up outside. Then another, and another and another and when we walked out outside we were blown away. Bikes were everywhere and we even had some great people from Mo. come out for the ride. It would seem word had spread quite well and a great group of riders were ready to try some new open roads. Some of whom we had never met. We discussed our first stop, saddled up, and rolled out. There’s something about looking in your rear view mirror and seeing close to 30 bikes behind you that makes ya wanna yell “HELL YA!” Now there are 2 people Tracy and I depend on for rides like this, FT Army member TJ Miles and our make shift weatherman Alex Cortez. The weather was looking a little iffy and Alex predictions usually run about 75 percent correct. If he says its not gonna rain, theres a 75% chance you’re gonna get wet. Lucky for us Alex was off his game this day and we all stayed warm and dry. Our ride took us south, through Red Bud, Chester, down the old river road and finally Murphysborro Illinois where we would enter the wine trail. Our first stop was a place Tracy and I know well. Mase’s Place is a must stop and the food is always great. We have such a good time there and its one of those places that are hard to leave. The patio is perfect as well as the view.

As we prepped to leave Mase’s, a last minute change was made to the ride. Time was flying by so we cut the ride down to 2 wineries. Rustle Hills and Star View would be them. There are so many great wineries on this trail ya just cannot hit them all in one day. Both wineries had entertainment on the patios and proved to be a great time for all. We were nearing the end of the day and had one last destination in sight. Dinner at Palace Pizza in Cobden Illinois and im tellin ya it’s WELL worth the trip! We felt bad because the place didn’t open till 4 so we couldn’t give them any notice that an army of hungry bikers were converging on them. But, they handled the crowd fantastic and as always, the pizza was top notch. You haven’t had pizza until you had THIS pizza! It could not have been a better day or a better way to end it. Tracy and I want to thank everyone who rode with us on this day. Special thanks to our Missouri friends for joining us. Some great memories and friends were made on this day and come spring 2011 we will do it again and even better. Stay tuned in FT Magazine and our facebooks for details on springs ride. We have a GREAT idea and you will want to come along!

SAFETY ASYLU

m o d e e r F g in d a r T for Safety

We continuously talk about what you should do to increase your safety. Let’s flip the card for a moment....What about when the government starts trading your freedom for “Safety”?

There are motorists, law makers and government employees who are of the opinion that motorcyclist have no right on the road. These people will purposely try to compromise our freedom of the road because they see us as weak without a steel cage for protection. They pull out in front of us, swerve into our lane or invade our space with no regard for our safety. They also like to let off their brake and nose into traffic as we pass to try and scare us. I don’t think that they understand how dangerous these games are. The same people are the ones who constantly propose legislation that severely limits our freedom of the road so that it is impossible to enjoy riding. This behavior is nothing short of discrimination against motorcyclist. It’s a normal human reaction to fear the unknown and to take advantage of someone else’s compromised situation when having a bad day. However, it doesn’t stop there. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked for applications from law enforcement outfits to apply for a new pot of taxpayer money designated for pulling motorcyclists off the road for “safety purposes”. A mandatory roadside motorcycle stop may be coming to a town near you, reports the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF). I’m sure that these stops are designed also to check for “M” endorsements, proof of insurance, registrations, serial numbers, warrants, criminal records, drugs, alcohol intake, tread depths, passenger pegs, EPA emissions, loud pipes and anything else they can sniff out or drum up. They will also take pictures and record your affiliations for their database in the name of Homeland Security under the Patriot Act. This is well and good until you’re denied the right to purchase an airplane ticket. This happened to an older friend of mine who is associated with a group of old timer’s that formed their own riding club. The MRF strongly opposes this sort of discrimination against motorcyclists. Pulling over law-abiding motorcyclists does not make anyone safer and is huge waste of taxpayer money. NHTSA’s request for applications asks law enforcement officials to submit plans similar to what New York State Police did last summer. They set up outside big public motorcycle gatherings and pulled every single motorcyclist over to the side of the road. There are much more productive and less discriminatory ways to promote safety. This approach was decided upon behind closed doors by a group of federal employees who apparently did not consult anyone in the motorcycling community for their input and expertise in motorcycle safety. NHTSA and Homeland Security continually forget who they work for...US! Law makers and law enforcement officers continually profile motorcyclist. Less than a year ago, while members of a motorcycle rights movement were inside a State Capital, attempting to find sponsorship for a bill that would stop motorcycle profiling, the State Patrol was captured on video crawling through the bushes in order to record the license plate and identifying information of every motorcycle in the parking lot. When confronted the State Patrol replied that they were gathering information based on their fictitious belief that there is always a propensity for violence when motorcycle clubs are together. This mindset among law enforcement personnel is SCARY! It will make you think twice about your own safety when pulled over or approached by a law enforcement officer. Move slowly and keep your hands on the grips. Please note that there are good law enforcement officers also. However, they probably are not the ones who will volunteer to work motorcycle only roadside stops or blockades. Law enforcement agencies continually forget who they work for...US! There are only three states left with no helmet law; New Hampshire, Illinois and Iowa. These states are a thorn in the side of the National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB). Why? BECAUSE WE ARE FREE TO DECIDE FOR OURSELVES AND THEY CAN’T TELL US WHAT TO DO! The NTSB has called for a nationwide helmet law. Obviously, wearing a helmet is much safer than not. However, the right to choose for ourselves is a constant battle against those that have us in their sites. The people of Missouri spoke and said that they want to relax their helmet law. The Governor of Missouri decided that “The People” were too ignorant to think for themselves and vetoed the bill. He knowingly slammed the door on all of the voters and veterans who have fought for our freedoms. If you’re going to veto individual freedom and right to choice based on higher taxes to cover medical cost, you may as well ban unprotected sex, smoking, alcohol and McDonald’s. Oh, Jay, my apologies, I forgot, you only discriminate against motorcyclist. Did you forget who you work for?...US!

LAKE OF THE OZARKS H-D

What’s over the next hill? Just the other night Whiskey & I were coming home & there was a flatbed truck parked on the shoulder of the road abandoned with no lights or reflectors. It actually had the bed partly in the road. As a biker we are always watching for the unexpected to pop up. I’ve had my variety myself through the years. There are so many things, deer, armadillo, dogs chasing us, we’ve even had them go across in front of us & circle around behind & cross in front of the next person. I remember in one of our travels, we had a small child’s size couch come from the pickup which was a head of the car in front of us. It came sliding across in front of us & seemed like it came from nowhere. You can’t always see what’s on the vehicle that far ahead. Then there was the day the lady walked out in the middle of the road like she was going to flag us down, she was rescuing a turtle & at the same time risking herself getting ran over. There are so many possibilities; the list just goes on & on. Sometimes when we are riding on a pitchblack night, I think of the incident in Tennessee a few years back when a couple hit a Black Angus cow at night. After seeing the truck bed sticking out in the roadway, I began to think of the article I had just read about, which told about the restoration of the North American Elk to MO. We are supposed to have 150 brought back to the state within the year. A mature male weighs between 600 to 800 pounds & an adult female weigh between 400 to 600 pounds. I’m not real sure how fast an Elk moves or if they would get startled & try to run if it seen a bike heading for it & I hope I never have to find out. I have seen the wild horses near Bunker once in the middle of the road & thought what it would be like to top a hill & end up in the middle of them.

As a biker we are aware of the dangers & yet we choose to ride. There is something special about the feel of riding down the highway with the wind in your face, the rumble of your bike beneath you, the beautiful scenery around you & the feel of freedom you have, that only a biker knows. In your travels be alert, ride safe & watch out for things you least expect, because you never know what’s around the next corner or over the next hill!
