By John Page Riding a motorcycle allows you the opportunity to experience nature and enjoy the outdoors in a way that only a biker can understand. The trade off for this freedom is that bikers must pay special attention to their safety and personal protection while riding. Other important gear protects your skin from injury during a crash. Riders should invest in a tightly fitted leather jacket and pants, or the same in Cordura, Kevlar, or ballistic nylon. Look for a jacket with a high collar that fits closely to your neck and pants with tight cuffs and zippered wind flaps. Also, reflective patches will help prevent crashes by making you more noticeable to cars and other vehicles on the road. Boots can help protect you from abrasions during a crash, but also from debris, cold air, and burns from hot exhaust pipes. Boot soles should be non-slip and able to easily grip your pegs and other controls. Laces can easily become tangled in the various parts of your bike, so boots with zippers are advisable. A sturdy pair of boots will also help prevent orthopedic injuries to your ankles and feet in the event of a crash.

Welcome fellow bikers! Sturgis is only 4 months away, Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest is 5 months and yours truly 50th birthday is 3 months away, that’s right the BIG 50. You know the funny thing is I never thought I would see 30, but as fate would have it I’m still here at least today as I write this, who knows when it will be over, but one thing that I whole heartily believe when your time is done it’s done and nothing will change it. I have lost some great friends and family and can attest to that. The funny thing is I thought it would be something I did or was involved in that would have punched my card and every day I wake up I thank the man I’m still here, and ask him why a he had to take friends and family from us all. But each day I also ask what the F*&^ is going to happen next, as I have said before our leaders in this country have managed to financially destroy us. Enough on that shit I’m getting really pissed off. So let’s talk about motorcycles instead. We all know that by now most everyone has gotten there bike out at least once and washed it. That is except me, you see I have this philosophy that if your spending all your time washing it, that when you ride it and it gets dirty it bothers you. And yes I can attest to that, so yes I haven’t washed it yet. But I will at least once before Sturgis gets here, you see I really don’t care if it’s dirty as long as it is mechanically sound, call me crazy but that’s how I feel. Also BIG ST. CHARLES has kicked off there calendar girl search for 2012. I couldn’t make the first one but I will make the next 4 and that’s a promise. And I’m also going to try and make at least a few other events. I’m planning on getting some miles this year and meeting some people along the way. Every year that’s my plan but you know shit happens but with gas prices where they are motorcycle sale will increase again dramatically, so hopefully the roads will get a little safer for us all. As I said in the beginning I’m going to hit Sturgis and Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest and I hope to see a hell of a lot of bikes on the road. But with that comes a price, and as we all know nothing free… New riders and an increase in traffic means a better chance for an accident. So I took our new writers advice ( SILG ) and upped some insurance as they stated a couple months back , I now have 500,000 in under insured and it didn’t break the bank. And with the reduced amount of liability a person has to carry well let’s just say I think it worth it. Hopefully I never have to find out but if so I got it. REMEMBER KEEP THE SHINY SIDE UP AND THE RUBBER SIDE DOWN!!!!!!

L A E D RAW A lot of times I get questions on painting right onto the raw steel and leaving parts of the metal showing through. Now because of adhesion problems I’ve found that just clearing over the raw steel doesn’t hold up to normal abuse. I recommend first having the raw steel powder coated with a clear powder coat base then baked. Then that surface will have the proper foundation for the paint and clear to adhere to.

As I travel this country behind the wheel of the freightliner doing motorcycle events of all sizes I am constantly and consistently asked one question HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR STRIP CLUB CHOPPERS? Well here is the real story I started in the motorcycle industry in the 90’s as a commissioned salesman for a California motorcycle dealer. I quickly became GM then I worked for two bike manufacturers and a custom builder/frame manufacturer. My duties at these positions ranged from floor sweeper, to road dog, to marketing, to writing manuals to bike building. In other words jack of all trades, master of none. I always had lots of marketing, sales and product ideas and some were great, others failed miserably. I always knew I wanted to take a chance and get out on my own and over the years I knew if I could combine sex and motorcycles I was pretty sure it would be well received in the motorcycle culture. I came up with lots of names but finally settled on STRIP CLUB CHOPPERS and after lots of market research at numerous adult establishments I trademarked the name and secured the domain. At that point I had no clue what to do, coincidently I was offered a job in California working for a parts manufacturer so I sold my house, two corvettes and one of my bikes and headed west. When I got there I quickly found out there was no job so I switched to plan B starting SCC . I started designing parts and a few shirts, no one wanted my parts but everyone wanted my swag. I was very fortunate that all those years working for others in the industry allowed me to develop lots of contacts and make lots of mistakes on someone else’s dime. When I started in 2004 the plan was never to build bikes due to the sheer number of guys building great scooters unfortunately now I attend shows where I have one of the only customs. NEW JERSEY influences are many of the old British Oi! bands like The Business, Blitz, 4-Skins, Cockney Rejects, etc. As part of the New Jersey Oi! scene in the 90’s, Broken Heroes was closely aligned with other greats to come out of Ne Jersey, such as Headwound, Niblick Henbane, Blanks77, Those Unknown & The Wretched Ones. Our current releases are a split CD with Pittsburgh’s Weekend Warriors called “Beer Guts and Drunk Sluts” and “I Told U Once,” both released by Street Anthem Records and both of which I’ve seen online for free if you’d like to hear them. We also have a split with New York’s Armed Suspects called “For The Punks & Skins” coming out on Oi! the Boat Records this spring. The Living Rejects are a punk rock band from the Ruhr Area in the western part of Germany. They formed in January 2008 by Andi (git), Michel (git, voc), Jens (bass) and Phil (drums). Because of his job, Jens left the band before the first gig. Julian then became the new bass player in fall 2008. After half a year of jamming and drinkin´ sessions, they went on stage for the first time in their hometown Dinslaken. They tried to start out as a melodic, punk rock band with idols like Social Distortion and The Bones, etc, before transforming into simple punk rock because of the incompetency of every single member. They always tell about their point of view on stage, raising their voice against racism, fascism and conformism. After a bunch of shows with national and international artists like Strung Out (HardCore/USA), Defecation Area (PunkRock/GERMANY) and the Moonshine Gamblers (Punk´n´Roll/GERMANY) and a real cool time, they’ve been doing alot of rehearsal sessions for their first longplayer at present. Daytona Celebrates

I hate the cold. If I never saw snow again, I wouldn’t miss it. That’s one of the reasons I leave for Daytona the first week in February every year, and try to stay on the road until evening temperatures are in the 70s at home. This year, the 70th anniversary of Daytona, would serve as my escape from one of the snowiest winters in history at home. I was more than ready to catch some racing action, resume riding and enjoy some warmth. The first Daytona 200 was actually run on January 24, 1937 and won by Ed Kretz on an Indian. The first race was run on the beach for half the race. Competitors would power down the beach, hit a big banked curve that would take them to the public roadway, then they’d race down the roadway until they hit another big banked curve that would put them back on the beach. Starting times for the race were dependant on the tides as the beach course would disappear at high tide. The AMA canceled the race in 1942 in the interest of national security. Race enthusiasts showed up in Daytona anyway to celebrate “Bike Week”. The tradition continues today and I am personally thankful for the opportunity to celebrate the start of the race season in Florida. Flat Track is where it’s at for me. I can’t get enough of it and Daytona is where it all starts. No front brake and controlled slides make for interesting sport. Some of the best racers in the world got their start going fast and turning left. It’s the oldest motorsport in America since folks started racing motorcycles as soon as the second one was built! This year’s opener did not disappoint as Sammy Halbert won on Thursday and Friday night. Chris Carr, seven-time Grand National Champion, finished 15th and 11th as he enters the Grand National Championship series for the last time. Carr turned pro in 1985 and is the second winningest rider in AMA flat track history. He’s still fast. In fact he’s the world’s fastest motorcyclist after setting the record in Bonneville at over 350 miles per hour. Check him out this season and pick up some Chris Carr farewell tour merchandise. Joe Kopp decided to hang up the steel shoe and go road racing this year. He did make the short track main on Thursday night and finished 19th but in his debut on the big track, Kopp finished 3rd to round out the podium behind Kyle Wyman and Chris Fillmore. Not bad for a guy that turned pro 20 years ago! The XR1200 class has caught on here in the U.S. and there is some pretty good talent. Hearing the big twins on the Daytona banking was music to my ears and watching an old master like Joe Kopp take the checkers in third place was even better. What makes Kopp’s ride even more amazing is that he crashed during qualifying after his 3rd lap and still put it on the front row. That’s a racer. Kopp’s sponsor, Team Latus Racing, pulled out the big one as Jason DiSalvo won the most bizarre Daytona 200 aboard his Team Latus Racing Ducati. The race turned into a 15 lap sprint after Dunlop convinced AMA Pro Racing that all competitors needed a new front tire. All activity ceased for over an hour as 38 bikes had to be re-fitted with new Dunlop fronts. The delay also gave Team Latus enough time to replace DiSalvo’s motor, which gave up the ghost just prior to the red flags, so he could rejoin the race. He made the most of it. A lap of Main Street, a visit to Destination Daytona, the Limpnickie lot, the corporate Harley-Davidson displays, Joe Robison’s place, Rat’s Hole show and a ride around the loop pretty much took up the rest of my Daytona trip. All too quickly it was over and in the record books. Seventy years and still going strong, Daytona will always be the Mother of all motorcycle events.

Sit down. Get ready to see the newest bike release from Black Sunshine Customs builder, Brian Elliott. Her name this time, ”Suicidal Imbecile”. Not the typical Black Sunshine Customs shovelhead, but quite the radical custom masterpiece, as usual. It would seem this ’67 Ironhead Sporty screams of BMX dirt bike feel with the incredible style of a Black Sunshine Custom. Years ago, a partner of Brian’s, Mike Eastman, had a ’68 Sportster that he always liked. Brian had always said he’d like to find something similar and build one of his own. However, years passed and it never happened…until now. A friend called him and told him about an ad posted at their job of this ’67 diamond in the rough. It wasn’t long and Brian was in the truck on his way to Iowa to pick it up. He got it home, tore it down and began the project, now finished, of the Suicidal Imbecile. The idea for this build was to gear it more toward the look of a dirt bike, but with all the twists of his personalized paint and parts to move it a step up from the rest. His buddy, Jayson Moore, from Iowa, sent an old Harley dirt bike gas tank and Brian designed the handlebars to give it an additional dirt bike appeal. There’s one catch. Dirt bikes sit up higher, so to keep a low profile, he cut 4” off the front fork tubes and rethreaded them on the lathe. Yeah, that’s right! Look closer, you won’t find this style very often. And it definitely works with this badass custom. He wanted to keep it low and still use 18” powder coated wheels. Mission accomplished! Many pieces from this bike were also brought in from some of his talented builders across the states. Eric from FNA Customs is the source of the rear fender, which is a perfect fit, and the aluminum brake drums and kick cover were sent to Court House Customs for the incredible engraving you see. Black Sunshine rebuilt the engine, split the rocker boxes (as he does to his shovelheads), and changed the frame slightly. You might notice on other sportsters that the frame curves in such a way that it leaves an empty space by the motor. To tighten things up, Brian reversed that tubing and mounted the oil tank there. Nice touch! Now let’s talk paint. Many of you might not know, but Brian Elliott is a very talented painter. However, he is a huge fan of the paint work done by our close buddy Darren from Liquid Illusions. So, Darren’s topped it off with a fine tuned and immaculately detailed paint job. While working on it, Brian popped in to lend a hand and bring some craziness to the paint shop, but overall, Darren is the pappy of this baby! Note the flat paint on the frame with the rub-off old style on the tubing, and then he switched gears to some high gloss and varigated leaf on the tank and fender to put some fire in this sporty’s ass. What a radical finish! Its no wonder Brian’s such a fan of his work! Ok, all said and done, Brian put a ton of personal hours of labor in this 1st attempt at an old 67 Ironhead Sporty. Although the seat was a prize he won at the first Big Mountain Run bike show, the risers, gas cap, oil cap air cleaner, and mirror are all new CNC parts by Black Sunshine Customs. And, all the assembly, design, and build were all the work and art of Mr. Sunshine himself, Brian Elliott. Once again, what a job well done. Damn that man can create a freakin awesome bike! Check it out! He always keeps us wondering, what’s next? He no longer got this bike fired up and it was sold to it’s new lucky owner, Daniel Banks. Imagine that!

In the early 1970’s a group of motorcycle enthusiast (bikers) were sitting around after a ride, discussing the senseless motorcycle crashes witnessed over the years. The light bulb lit up and one of them said, “We need to help our fellow motorcycle enthusiast (bikers) keep the rubber side down by creating a motorcycle safety course”. They embarked on a mission, scratched, tinkered and fiddle farted around for a couple of years before delivering a final product in 1973. Suddenly, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) was born. It wasn’t perfect at first, nothing ever is. However, the basics were there. The program has maintained its basic fundamentals with an added 38 years of refinement by people like us, remained a non-profit organization and is sponsored by the U.S. manufacturers and distributors of BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Piaggio/Vespa, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory and Yamaha motorcycles. Not bad for a group of bikers with a vision! I witness track riders with amazing amount skill enrolling in MSF courses. Why? One of them said, “It refreshes my skills of the mind to help me avoid hazards when riding on public roads”. I asked an old biker, with a braided beard, why he was taking a MSF course when he had been riding for over 30 years? He told me that it was his wife’s idea. He said, “I was skeptical at first. However, I learned a lot of cool shit! It was well worth my time”. As a MSF Rider Coach, I often find myself fielding the who, what, where, when, why and how questions of motorcycle safety courses. Many folks seem interested, however, cannot readily find the information needed. Let’s take some of the mystery out of these courses and point you in the right direction. There are a lot of courses offered by MSF. We’ll cover the basics. Basic Rider Course (BRC) The best place for a new rider to start once they’ve made the decision to ride. Successful completion of this course and its knowledge and skill tests, which consists of approximately five hours of classroom and 10 hours of on-cycle instruction (conducted over two or three sessions), may serve as a license test waiver program in some states. A course completion card may provide a rider an insurance discount. Intermediate Rider Course (IRC) The IRC consists of 8.5 hours of instruction. It is designed for riders with previous experience who are returning to the sport or who have ridden for some time without a license. They may be returning riders who passed the BRC and yet does not have their own motorcycle or who would like additional training and practice before riding on the street, and for experienced dirt bike riders who want to start riding on the street. The course presents an overview of the fundamentals of safe, responsible motorcycling and provides the riders the opportunity to, renew skills and acquire knowledge important for safe street operation. The IRC provides a training experience for riders who already have basic operational skills (straight line riding, shifting, stopping, clutch control) and who need or desire refinement of those skills to demonstrate the minimum competencies required for licensing purposes. Experienced Rider Course (ERC) Specially trained instructors provide 8 hours of discussion and on-cycle instruction. The ERC is intended for those who have motorcycle riding experience of at least one year or 1,000 miles. This course is primarily designed to increase your present skill level and develop a greater awareness of perceptual skills. The physical and psychological aspects of rider conditioning are considered, as well as special concerns such as emergencies, adverse conditions, and accident avoidance. Examples of specific course content include: higher speed steering, cornering, counterweighting, traction awareness, and braking. Other course time is devoted to motorcycle dynamics, wind effects, wobble, tire characteristics, and load distribution. Street Rider Course (SRC) An SRC takes approximately four to five hours. Routes are progressively more challenging and start with lower-speed areas and move to suburban areas with multiple lane roadways, city streets and expressways. The focus of the course is on strategies for identifying and responding to typical riding situations in multiple riding environments. Students are exposed to lane positioning for visibility and space cushion, situational awareness, and proper cornering process. Trike Rider Course (TRC) The TRC is intended for those who have trike riding experience of at least one year or 1,000 miles. This course is primarily designed to increase your present skill level and develop a greater awareness of perceptual skills. Specially trained instructors will lead you through 8 hours of discussion and on-trike instruction. Dirt Bike School (DBS) Curriculum includes a pre-ride inspection, basic riding techniques, mental strategies and environmental awareness. Classes last about six hours. Motorcycle safety seminars, a variety of motorcycle publications and the internet provide a wealth of information for the beginner to seasoned rider to educate themselves on how to be a better/safer rider. A Few Words From St. Clair Co. ABATE of Illinois Bike weather is just about here for good this season (ignore that snowflake you saw this morning) and all are chomping at the bit to hit the road. All the magazines & bike organizations will have plenty to say about getting your bike back on track & in shape from the winter doldrums, watch for wet patches on pavement, mentally do stretching exercises to re-hone those bike riding skills, etc., and so on. One thing I try to keep reminding myself each time I get on the bike and head out is that…this morning everybody who got out of bed and jumped behind the wheel of their car said to themselves as they headed down the road, “…I am going to run Ron Carter down today.” Now I’ll admit, there are some, with whom I’m familiar, who have that thought when they go to bed at night and are still hoping for the chance the next morning…but I’m not talking about those people. In general, I have always assumed that, when I am on the road, everyone is out to get me. While it may seem a bit paranoid, I think it gives me a bit of an edge until the soggy-headed cage drivers, who it seems, need 3 months of good riding weather to pass before they notice motorcycles on the highway and become used to looking out for me and all the others who are out there riding. (Of course, I never stop looking out for the soggy-headed people.) That is one of the main reasons that Motorcycle Awareness Month is held in May. It is up to us to do what we can to help the soggy-headed people notice us WAAAAY before we become a hood ornament on a Buick. At this month’s meeting, we will be discussing what we can do to promote motorcycle awareness, discussing the fate of all those antimotorcycle bills out there along with those bills intended to actually make the odds of surviving another motorcycling season a little greater. Also on the agenda is the disposition of motorcycle only roadblocks & checkpoints. To be mentioned…did you read about the new Illinois helmet law going into effect soon…how about the law denying all the right to ride dirt bikes and quad runners until the age of 16 & only w/license…how about the law confiscating motorcycles at bike shows for suspicion of bad umbers but no proof? OF COURSE YOU DIDN’T READ ABOUT THESE…IT’S BECAUSE ABATE DOES IT’S JOB!!! We have been protecting the rights of ALL motorcyclists whether they belong to ABATE or not for over 25 years in Illinois and for 20 years in St. Clair County. May 21st is our chapter’s 20th Anniversary Party, being held at Chaser’s Bar in Dutch Hollow at the edge of Belleville IL; please attend and help make it a success. Wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra $25 to join up and help pay, in a small way, for those rights you have. Sedalia Swap Meet
Whether you’re looking for a used bike, a custom wheel, a replacement part for one you’ve broken or some new leathers, a swap meet is sure to have a variety of choices. I can usually find something I just can’t live without. I have found a lot of bargains thru the years & keep going back for more. Sometimes you will find the most unique item, possibly something very old & no‌.. I’m not talking about the bikers either. You can also find new items at these events & they are usually priced at a discount price. If you are thinking of buying some new leathers, custom parts or even a new toy hauler chances are you will find a bargain at one of these many swap meets. I’ve been planning on checking out the swap meet at Sedalia at the State Fair grounds for several years now & each time something has interfered with my plans. Mar. 6th Whiskey & I left early & made this trip. With a heated building, weather doesn’t harm their attendance. The building was full & there was a very good crowd of shoppers & vendors as well. I have been to the Swap in Belleville, IL many times & this one wasn’t as large but, then again it was a good size & not only was there a lot of shoppers there was also a variety of items to shop for. The many vendors offered used bikes, leather, etched wooden signs, jewelry & lots & lots of used parts. I’m not sure who bought the most Whiskey or me but, we had our arms full when we left & yes, I’m sure we’ll be back. The people were very friendly‌‌of course‌‌. they’re bikers. I enjoyed visiting with some FTM fans, who say they love the mag & read it all the time. This is always nice to here. So, if you like swap meets & you haven’t made it to this one yet, check it out. It is sure to please & I bet you won’t come home empty handed. I’m sure I’ll be back again.
