Night Riding By John PageÂ

Nighttime riding can be a welcomed alternative for motorcycle enthusiasts. It gives you a break from the unwavering summer heat and can also provide a reprieve from daytime traffic. Although riding at night can be enjoyable, there are many situations that can lead to a dangerous riding experience. Whether it is inattentive drivers, animals, or areas of dense insects, there are a number of factors that can quickly turn a nighttime ride into a scary and threatening situation. Fortunately, most of these factors are in your control as the driver. From our work with personal injury and wrongful death cases, the attorneys with Serious Injury Legal Group want you to be fully prepared and knowledgeable about safe riding practices at night. This article will provide some practical suggestions to ensure not only a safe but also enjoyable ride. One of the most important factors when riding at night is to make sure to not over drive your headlights. Since you can only see as far as your headlights illuminate, it is extremely important to be able to bring your bike to a complete stop within the distance that your headlights provide light into the darkness. Riding with your low beams on will provide a shorter range beam and have a cutoff in height as to not blind other drivers on the road. High beams or your “driving lights give off a longer and more narrowed beam in order to provide as much light as possible. The headlights that come equipped with the bike are effective, but there are various options to upgrade to brighter bulbs while remaining at the same wattage. Check your state regulation on aiming your headlights and raise the beam to the maximum angle allowed by your state. This alteration can be very effective and is easily done without special tools. More effective and better positioned bulbs can help you see the road and obstacles that may exist while riding at night. How to see the road more effectively at night is not the only strategy to know however, it is also important that other drivers on the road are able to see you. Choose a night to try a little trick. Turn your lights on, park your bike in the distance, and see how visible it is from the front, back, and sides. This will give you a good perspective of how visible your bike is to other vehicles while driving at night. By applying reflective tape on the dark areas of your bike, you will be able to create a more visible presence while on the road. Some people may not like the idea of putting tape swatches all over their bike, but reflective tape does come in a variety of colors that will make it less conspicuous during the daytime. Another option is to place the swatches in areas that are not visible during the daylight but are visible at night. There are also reflective decals available in a variety of designs that can be applied to the sides of your bike. When choosing the colors of reflective tape, remember that the Department of Transportation states that red is for the rear of the bike, amber is for the sides, and white for the front. Keeping with these specifications will help other drivers know if you are coming or going. While adding reflective tape and color to your bike is helpful, wearing bright colored clothing while riding at night will also help other drivers see you. In addition to the physical improvements that can be made to you and your bike, being proactive while driving will also help ensure your safety. Always allowing other vehicles more distance and driving defensively during the nighttime will allow you more reaction time if a dangerous situation does occur. Clear, clean, and unscratched eye gear is extremely important as well because dirt or scratches will affect your vision greatly while driving at night. This eye gear will also protect you from the large amount of insects that is always present while taking night rides. Aaron and I are both avid riders. We know the importance of safety and taking these proactive steps will help to better ensure your safety and enjoyment while riding. Unfortunately, being a defensive and proactive driver can sometimes not be enough. In these situations, remember the attorneys at Serious Injury Legal Group have recovered millions of dollars for injured bikers and we are always willing and able to fight for you.

Well how is everyone doing? I hope your ok. By the time this article goes to print I will either be on my way to Sturgis or in Sturgis , and for all of you who are reading this, you either didn’t get to go or just didn’t want to go. But if you did go I hope you had an enjoyable trip and made it back safely. Well I got to make it to Full Throttle Friday at Elmo’s a couple weeks back , and as a treat I got to see South Side 5 perform, and people they rocked the F^%$ out , hell they were jamming so good that they knocked the power out twice that night, well I got to talk with Stump Stephenson the lead singer in between sets for a few minutes and he had informed me that the band had just gotten back from a venue in Oklahoma that’s called Rocklahoma , and that they had opened up for Motley Crew and Poison. Now you have to be pretty damn good to do this. They wouldn’t have gotten the gig if this wasn’t the case. So if you haven’t had the opportunity to see them I suggest you try and check them out, you will be glad you did. And speaking of Elmo’s the place was full and the staff couldn’t have been any better. The owner Brent is great, and if he can do anything for you he will go out of his way to do it. And what I really like is its down in, what I will call a hole. That’s right if you pull in the parking lot and there is plenty of parking and there also always is a place blocked off for your bike right outside the door. Then nobody will know your there, so if you ride by and it doesn’t look like it’s hopping… the only way you will find out is drop down in the hole and check it out! OH YEA THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THERE IS NEVER A COVER CHARGE. And for those of you who know me I will leave before I pay one. But that’s my own opinion. You see I figure if I want to patronize your place than why the F$#@ should I have to pay just to get in and spend my money. I guess I will never figure it out, but the best part is I’m not going to try. I just turn around and go to the next bar, after all someone wants to sell me a Budweiser without me buying a gift to enter your door. I have a suggestion for bars with cover charges give away a door ticket like a 50/50 and give away half of what you take in at least that would be a raffle of sorts. Ok Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest is rapidly approaching, so I hope you’re not a last minute kind of guy or gal, people that I have talked to say the hotels and motels and condos are full or almost sold out. I know there is still time but your starting to cut it close. I keep hearing it promises to be bigger and better than the past four. And if that’s the case well it’s going to be great. Even the years with the shit weather my group still looks back and laughs about the weekend, you see what’s great about my friends they always look at the glass half full even when it’s almost empty. Guess that’s why I love them all, you are going to have a good time no matter what, even if you’re hung-over I promise you that. And again there is a good group going again this year, and as I write this I am so looking forward to Sturgis but can’t wait for Bikefest because it’s unfortunate for me but my lovely wife can’t make Sturgis but she is going to the lake! Her vacation days are already approved. But life goes on Sturgis first, after all what’s a guy to do lots of naked women, cold beer, bikers, and a great big party. And hopefully great weather, you see for the first time Glencoe campground is adding white sand beach, tiki bars, and a floating dock, so things could get pretty interesting. I always take a camera but never take many pictures, but this year could be different, we shall see. WELL THAT’S IT FOR THIS MONTH

p o t S it! Here’s one ya don’t see everyday. Got a call the other day and the person asked if i could paint a tail light? Thought about it for a few seconds and said yep. Bring it on in well he did so here goes.

1.) First i tape off a couple of rings and back tape the rest of the rear fender. Then cover the part of the lens that will be red.

3.) Next take a piece of ordinary drywall tape. And place it on the flat back part of the lens and trim to the edges of the light.

5.) I then peel off the line tape and drywall tape. and respray a light transparent coat of red. Then a few shadows and high lights.

BROWN BAGpresents PROPAGANDA

REGIONAL

XXX SMUT

XXX SMUT are a band from Champaign, Illinois & parts of the Midwest...also CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS see “ Midwest Kings Of Punk”. Founded by members Handsome Mick (drums) and Mr. Quick (bass) in the early 90’s, the two asked longtime friend & brother Todd Hogan aka “Trash” to front the band.. With the addition of Mike Kletz & Jeremy Merrieghn, the original line-up was complete. Shortly there-after, Smut entered Scab Studios and recorded a 6 song demo, with intense classics as “World Of Tragedy”, “Fuck Everybody” & “White Trash Welfare Kings” - automatically saying what any other bands in the area were scared to say.. The live shows were raw & violent, (1st show complete with a full-scale riot!) and the band was pretty much banned from EVERY place they played (with the exception of the few clubs that got it). Over the course of the next 5 years members came and moved on to the next classic line-up.., eventually Mick moved to a lead guitar position when XXX SMUT enlisted longtime smut fan & party favor fetcher Billy Fury on 2nd guitar (previously in Porkchop Shifter) a debut 45 ep followed called “ Straight To Hell” Shotly thereafter, Greg “punkrockdrummachine” Jaeger & fuckin’ Ed Young of The RESINATORS and SEMICIDS fame rounded out the line-up for the first “ official” full-length release simply titled “XXX SMUT”. The band upped the energy and tightness even more for their following live shows... complete with blood, beer, broken glass, sex, pills, booze, powder, zombie dust c, and more debautchery.. Including being banned again. : ) XXX SMUT is still one of the fastest, loudest and tightest punk bands on the scene.. With only the music doing the talking now and the energy level through the roof!! A new album is ready to drop simply titled “ Too High To Die”. Featuring 13 songs it is set to be released on The PATH LESS TRAVELED records this year!! Current members include: Handsome Mick-lead vox & lead guitar, Steve Repta-leadguitar, Donny Zombie- bass & vocals, Blake Carson- drums and Greg Jaeger-drums. For more info and music check out http://facebook.com/smutrock or www.myspace.com/xxxsmut .

A couple of weeks ago an old friend of mine contacted me and asked me if I had parts available in flat black and without hesitation my inner salesman kicked in and I proceeded to give him the available product inventory. We chatted for a while and I quickly learned that he was upgrading a Harley for his nephew who was currently serving his third tour in Afghanistan after two successful tours in Iraq, and when I say successful I guess that means still alive and well. I told him I had to leave town and would get him some stuff at my cost before Sturgis and didn’t give it much more thought because I was so self absorbed in preparing for all the activities I have scheduled in Sturgis. Things changed dramatically for these young men when on July 12th Lance Cpl Robert S Greninger of Greenfield Minn. was killed conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. Cpl Greninger served alongside my friends’ nephew SSgt Chris Shranko and saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers with his actions that cost him his life. When I was informed of this I began to think about all the young men and women who pay the ultimate price for us to enjoy all the freedoms we take for granted in this country. The freedom to take a summer vacation the freedom to fly on an airplane the freedom to attend a motorcycle event and I know it’s a cliché but Freedom is not free, it cost this young man his life; who was just beginning his life & his future. You may not personally know anyone who is serving but everyone over there is someone’s son or daughter mother or father so the next time you see someone in uniform remember the reason you were able to go to the movies last night is because they paid the ultimate price to keep us free.

You may not agree with the politics or the administration that is in office but these young men and women don’t have time to concern themselves with that they are too busy sacrificing their lives so you can enjoy yours. Obviously I felt the need to do something more so I will be donating all the parts for the bike as well as sending a care package of SCC swag to Afghanistan for the entire unit which seems so inconsequential when compared to donations of the men and women who serve in every branch of the military. I am not going to do my usual shameless self promotion at the end of this month’s article suffice to say it just doesn’t seem appropriate. -Johnny & Jay

Who is a biker? By Sue Daniels

und

Compo

sue@fullthrottlemidwest.com ave you ever wondered just what the true meaning of a biker is? If you ride a lot & are out in mixed crowds, you will often hear criticism from others about whether or not someone is a true biker. How many of you have heard someone say “Oh, he aint no real biker, h- - -, he won’t ride if it’s the least bit too cold, I’ll ride anytime, rain, cold or even snow, I don’t care!” I have often wondered who decided what a true biker is.

H

We have such a wide variety of bikers in this world. There is the biker that rides his or her bike only in the summer maybe 4 or 5 times, which consist of 1 long trip & 2 or 3 week-end short trips during the summer, which might for example be a ride to Sturgis & maybe to a poker run or 2. We have the biker who sits in the coffee shop or bar & talks about all the trips he takes & his bike doesn’t get out of the garage except to go to his present location. Yes, we do have the MC clubs & there is a variety of them which have many different rules & qualifications to be a member. Maybe they are the true bikers. Some of you are the ones that hit all the poker runs & bike shows & consider that a well spent summer of riding. Or you may be the person that rides your bike in the evenings & week-ends around the countryside with only one other friend & parks it all winter. I know several that are just rally rider’s, this is their time to get away from the rest of the family & be just with their friends & do pretty much anything they want. Don’t get excited, I said pretty much……! What a great feeling once again in this life, just do as you please, no criticism. Oh yeh, what about the biker who rides his bike to work almost every day & again on the week-ends, not to mention several trips a year, you might say he doesn’t really need a car & maybe doesn’t own one. He is definitely in the running. So many different choices, maybe that is why if you look in the dictionary there isn’t a listing for biker, doesn’t anyone know what a biker really is? Do we exist? H- - - yeh!

BIKER FRIENDLY

1/2 mile East of Lake Ozark Harley-Davidson

Does the way we dress have anything to do with whether or not we are a true biker? I’ve have seen it all & believe me I couldn’t even begin to cover all of those combinations. Steve won’t give me that much space in the mag. When you think of bikers, your mind automatically will go to leather jackets, chaps, doo rags, boots, chains & tattoos, ah yes, tattoos. You may have heard the phrase, ”If you are going to be a biker, you’ve gotta get a tattoo.” Yes, when most people think of a true biker, they think of a tattoo. All I have to say on that is, I have my own opinion & only mine & that is IF…… you decide to get a tattoo, make sure it is something you will never get tired of looking at. It’s kind of like getting married & thinking this is something I will want for ever & could never get tired of, not in a million years. You will have to look at this every day of your life & live with it or……..getting rid of it will cost you a lot of money, be painful & you may be scarred for the rest of your life. Well, I know several of you have been voicing your opinions as you read my article & that is OK. We are all different & boy am I glad. Things should be different to keep life interesting. Who am I to judge what a true biker is? Yes, I’ve rode most of my life & probably will as long as I can. Am I a true biker? I can’t really say. Yes, I’ve rode in rain, 30 degree weather, rode for many hours at one time & ride all seasons of the year but, does that classify me as a biker? What is a biker? I have my opinion, what a biker is & it sort of combines all of the above. I believe a biker is someone who has a passion for riding, feeling the air in their face & enjoying the freedom he or she feels while traveling down the road. They are someone who doesn’t really care what anyone else thinks or says about them. They are just enjoying their time on their bike no matter what the weather or where they’re headed. I do believe though if you enjoy riding, like any of your passions, it will be something you do quite often. I know I am going to get a lot of feedback from all of you & I welcome any & all, even the negative ones. Actually, I may print some of your responses to this article. My e-mail is below & for those that have never written before. I would love to hear from you. If you consider yourself a biker………….get out there, ride those bikes & like always stay safe!

Full Throttle SAFETY ASYLUM BY T.J. MILES

The Rubber Side

I

t’s a simple fact! Motorcycles have a higher power to weight ratio than most cars, ride on less surface and corner in a dynamic way placing a heavy demand on tires. Motorcycle safety means a lot where the rubber meets the road. When is a tire in need of replacement? You certainly don’t want to be caught in a rain storm with no tread! The DMV requires motorcycle tire replacement if it has less than 1/32 of an inch of tread or the wear bars are showing. A front tire may be shot when there is still plenty of rubber on it. If the rear is down to the wear bars, yet the front tire still has plenty of rubber, both have gone through the same number of heat cycles. The front tire may “look” great, but it can be just as worn as the rear. A motorcycle with a worn tire and a new one may be unstable and create a dangerous riding situation. Motorcycle radials and motorcycle bias-ply tires each give a specific type of handling characteristic. Mixing them may also create an unstable situation, a rougher ride and diminish the bikes ability to corner well. This is why you should always replace tires in sets. Tire pressure is the number one key to performance. Low pressure can create a comfy ride; however, you may over heat your tires increasing the chances of premature wear and failure. Too much air will make the ride hard and will wear out the centerline of the tire prematurely. Over inflation also decreases the contact patch on the ground and can make this a dangerous situation for riding in the rain. Keep your tires inflated to the recommended pressure and never exceed the maximum manufactures pressure on the sidewall. A pressure check is recommended every two weeks. Don’t deflate your tires for winter or other long periods when you aren’t riding. This will eventually make them brittle. Even if they’re not being used, always keep your tires at the right pressure. Before you hop on your bike, take a minute to look over your motorcycle tires. You may as well check the bearings while down there. Once you’re on the road, it’ll be too late. And of course, be sure to avoid potholes, curbs and sharp objects on the road that can damage your motorcycle tires. Check the valve core. A little water or spit into the valve stem will let you know if it’s leaking. It is not recommended to attempt the “spit maneuver” by putting any part of the body close to a hot exhaust pipe. Not even for a probee! Always replace stems when changing tires. The valve stem cap should be securely fastened on the stem. It’s an important part of your motorcycle tire’s sealing system. This will give you extra security at high speeds, when centrifugal force can open the valve a little inside the stem. A motorcycle is not like a car. You have two tires not four, and if one should fail at speed you’ll be in bad shape. Therefore, fork out the money for a new one instead of patching or plugging it. There is nothing wrong with using a plug kit and small compressor or CO2 cartridge for an air source with the intension of limping to a location for tire replacement. It is never a good idea to use cleaners and polishes on tires. Overspray onto the tread or brakes can create a dangerous situation the next time you lean into a corner or attempt to use the brakes. Wipe off oil, gas or solvents promptly. Motorcycle tire manufacturers recommend you clean your tires with nothing more than soap and water. A lot of so-called “protectants” actually advance premature cracking and deterioration. Do your best to keep tires out of direct sunlight. UV radiation from direct sunlight will dry and chemically change the tire compounds over time. This weakens bonds and makes them brittle. The front and rear tires of a motorcycle have completely different design profiles. Never mount the wrong one on the wrong wheel. When mounting a new tire, make sure you check the directional arrow so the tire tread runs in the right direction. Never replace it with a lower speed rating and stick to tires that match the rim. Make sure that you realign the rear wheel (not for shaft driven bikes) after you install a wheel or tighten the chain. This will reduce tire wear and provide you with better control while you ride. Balancing the tire and rim is essential when mounting. Unbalanced tires or rims can cause vibration and untimely wear. It is recommended to check motorcycle wheel balancing every 600-1000 miles. Your motorcycle’s handling and tread life depend on it. After mounting new motorcycle tires, take the bike out for a few easy rides just to scrub them in. New tires are slicker than snot. They have the best grip only after the surface has been ridden on for 100 miles.

ISSUE 58

Be careful not to overload your motorcycle. If you want to add a sidecar, saddlebags or other heavy accessories, ask your dealer about which tires would be most appropriate. Heavy add-ons can have a major impact on the lifetime, durability, and performance of motorcycle tires. Motorcycle tires carry both imprinted and raised numbers and letters on their sidewalls, providing important information. This includes the tire’s size, maximum speed, load index, construction type, balance marks and wear indicators. It is essential to match the appropriate tires to each motorcycle, as well as ensuring they are properly mounted, inflated and maintained. Determine the tire’s manufacture date by locating the four raised numbers following the tire’s Department of Transportation (DOT) code. The first two numbers indicate the week of manufacture. The second two indicate the year. The date code 2610 designates a manufacture date of July 2010. Older tires break down with age, so when buying tires, be sure to check the manufacture date. Do not buy tires that are more than five years old. Identify the tire’s size by locating its metric or alphanumeric designation on the sidewall. These codes identify width and height, as well as the size of the rim on which the tire fits. The metric designation 110/90 16 identifies a width of 110 mm and an aspect ratio, a specific percentage of the width indicating its height of 90. Ninety percent of 110 mm equals 99 mm. A tire marked 110/90 16 is 110 mm wide and 99 mm high. The final number indicates the corresponding rim size of 16 inches. The same size tire using alphanumeric code is marked MN90 16, in which M identifies a HYPERLINK “http://www.ehow.com/how_5843415_read-motorcycletires.html”motorcycle tire and N is the code for a width of 110 mm. Manufacturers offer size charts in both metric and alphanumeric designations. Locate either the numerical or letter code indicating the HYPERLINK “http://www. ehow.com/how_5843415_read-motorcycle-tires.html”tire’s load capacity, also known as load index on the sidewall. Load capacity indicates the weight a properly inflated tire can safely bear. Manufacturers also list load capacities using the notation “LOAD CAPACITY,” followed by the exact weight the manufacturer recommends. Load capacity directly affects a tire’s speed rating, or the speed at which it will safely function under maximum load. Search within the numbers or letters indicating the tire’s size code for letters identifying the speed rating and construction designation. A tire coded 110/90 TR 16 has a speed rating of 118 mph, indicated by the letter T, and is manufactured using radial construction, indicated by the letter R. The letter B is used to indicate belted bias construction. Manufacturers use various letters to indicate speed ratings between 99 and 186 mph. The letters TL (tubeless) and TT (tube type) may also appear, if the manufacturer chooses not to spell out the words. While it is essential to help a buddy and preserve the safety of a riding group, a certain amount of tact is required when criticizing another person’s motorcycle tires. I found it better to present alternatives to paying full price at the local dealership. There are several internet retailers who offer a better choice of tires at lower prices and many local shops willing to mount them. There is nothing more appealing than seeing a motorcycle headed to the shop with a couple of new tires tied off to the luggage rack. The demand on your motorcycle tires is great. You have no choice but to rely on them. Please make room in your budget for tire replacement and complete your research ahead of time to avoid a dangerous situation. Keep The Rubber Side Down!
