Well the 71st year of Sturgis is in the books and I don’t have any official numbers but from many years attending the rally I’m going to say the numbers are down almost all the way across the board, and I say almost. It seems a lot of businesses and one that is on television decided they were going to strike it rich this year. And although I only watched the show once, I knew he was going to F%$# the shit out of any dumbass willing to get F%$#ED, and that wasn’t going to be me. And from now on after the public’s display he is just getting started. This is only here say from a brother of mine who attended a show over there but it was thirty dollars for the concert , ten dollars more to get in the bar and five dollars to park, and did I mention five F^%$ing dollars a beer. Now don’t get me wrong you are going to spend that much going to a concert here or probably anywhere. But I guess it pisses me off because when this establishment opened for the first couple of years I would drink 16 oz bottles and or cans for two bucks up until the Friday before the rally started, and last year when I was out there a week early the F^%$ing prices were rally prices not only there but everywhere. The largest rally has become a F%$# fest and it showed this year. With the economy in the tank and numbers down the, sharks went after anyone attending the rally, And I would say by some of the people I talked to it was there first time being there. So they didn’t mind being gang raped by the businesses, but for me I didn’t like what I seen happening at all. So, on a scale from 1 to 10 I am giving it a 3.5 to 4 rating. And although I had a good time I won’t be attending the rally next year and most likely the year after. I always prided Sturgis not to end up like Daytona but guess what it has. So I don’t want to spend my hard earned money at a place which I feel has lost touch with BIKERS!!!!! . That all said I am now looking forward to LAKE OF THE OZARKS BIKEFEST so far it’s been a great time and not all but most businesses have not tried to gouge the bikers , repeat not all. And the ones who haven’t I promise are making more than the ones who are. You see one thing I know and anyone in the business of dealing with bikers is they are loyal, treat them right and they not only will be back you but they will tell their friends and so on and so forth. Not singling any business out but I will use SHADY’S AT THE LAKE the food and beer prices are the same before during and after the rally and every F%$#ing time I’m there during the bike fest the place is packed. You see my feelings are these just because I ride a bike be it a Harley, Honda, Kawasaki, Victory, Bmw, Yamaha, the list goes on shouldn’t mean I should have to pay more than anyone else , and when this happens it pisses me off, as it should piss you off you also. Some of you may not agree with my analogy and that’s okay this is the United States of America.
to chocolate cake wrestling at their compound at the campground and after seeing the wrestlers how could I say no. Not to mention I had already had a few beers. Thanks again STURDY & CRAZY for the invite to not only me but my camping party who all said they had a blast. Your hospitality couldn’t have been better, you see they gave me the best seat in the house, but I was so F&^%ed up I only remember some of the great time I had. But thanks to my crew we got some awesome pictures, not saying I didn’t try but they done better than me. That day was one of my better days because the next day I didn’t hardly leave the tent I was so F%$#ing hung-over that I literally stayed in, its hell being 50. I know better than to touch on politics but riding home from Sturgis I got to thinking, you know that’s a hell of a ride so you have a lot of time to think. And I believe I have a solution to our debt. Now before you start cussing me out, listen for a minute. A couple was on the news asking for each adult, men and women send them 5 bucks and we could pay the debt down. Now at first I thought are you crazy. But after thinking this through it really isn’t a bad idea. After we all add a few attachments to the bill and we figure out how we will spend it we can come up with a solution. I’m going to name the bill U.S.A. , it goes like this we the people will give the required 5 bucks asked of us to reduce the debt. But in return you all will resign your positions and you will never be allowed to run for office you will be given the same health care as you have seem fit for us and you will give the American people all the money the lobbyist have given you to vote the way they wanted you to. Also you all will turn yourselves in for prosecution of stealing from the American people whom you have been sworn to represent. People don’t freak out on the 5 bucks it’s going to cost you to get rid of these assholes because you are more than likely going to get 10 bucks back just from the money we will save in them resigning , health care , and lobbyist money, and salaries, and so on. Now normally I wouldn’t bring politics up but I haven’t been anywhere that it’s not been a subject of conversation, so that’s my take. Well that’s it for this month.
OK while we are on the Bikefest subject have you seen the bike to be given away this year HOLY SHIT! And again I can’t win it. So I’m asking for some public opinion do you think I should be able to enter the passport giveaway. Steve and Brandie will hate me for this but e-mail them and let them know please. So far I would have gotten my passport for anyone of the bikes given away so far. And this one is no exception. It looks very, very nice and again it’s by far your best chance to win one in , I’m going out on a limb and say anywhere. OK before I go I want to say there were a couple of first for me in Sturgis that I have to mention. One being not only was it my first wedding proposal but later on I meet another couple who proposed also on the same day as my friends did. So without further ado I want to congratulate Heath and Lori on their wedding proposal. It was pretty cool Heath proposed at MT. Rushmore right under the Wisconsin flag. OH YEA! Lori said yes. And the other couple whom I met the next day and happen to be from STRIP CLUB CHOPPERS was Crazy and Katie and he proposed to her on the bar and she also said yes, so congratulations to both of the lucky couples. The next first for me again came from our friends at STRIP CLUB CHOPPERS who invited me

When the Strip Club Choppers posse rolls into a town for an event we are often the center of attention and building a bike with a fully functional dance pole that shoots 4 foot flames only serves to magnify the attention. The new Stripperglide was a long time in planning and could not have been completed without my good friend Tim Kirsch and his guys Robert and Chris who did all the hands on building and design. When you want a stripper pole on your bike that shoots flames there is no catalog to order from just sayin. Special thanks go out to Kevin from American Drag Seats for the custom bag lids and seat , John Shope from Sinister for the bags and rear fender, Ken from Tricky light for the LEDs , Fullsac performance pipe, Tailgunner exhaust, Bill from Legends Supreme and Biktronics . Without all the contributions from these companies the project could not have been completed. We debuted the bike between concerts at our vending area and the crowd literally formed a traveling circle around us as I drove carefully though the crowd with SCC girl Lara on the pole while it shot flame 4 ft into the clear stugis sky. To say the reaction was favorable is an understatement. You know my montra “ HAVE POLE WILL TRAVEL” i guess now its “HAVE FLAME THROWING POLE WILL TRAVEL”. My good friend and fellow Englishmen Steve Kelly did a great photo shoot of the new stripperglide at the new and improved Glencoe Campground look for these in a magazine feature very soon. Big thanks t o Sean and Jason from Glencoe for their hospitality. When I started SCC 8 years ago my goals were to party, travel and meet females, this year in Sturgis my priorities came full circle, I got engaged and spent way too much time babysitting one of my franchises. It’s scary that I am now the voice of reason and setting the example of how to behave, careful hell may freeze over soon We now have 18 states that have franchise representation and I would like to officially welcome aboard SCC of Indiana and Florida. Next year will see a reduced tour schedule for the SCC roadhouse as we turn over the events to our family of franchises. Wow the times they are a changing but for the better. Road to Recovery By Rick “Dakota” Kempf
I’d like to start out mentioning that after the stroke 3 months ago names don’t always come back to me, so if you know who someone is please let me know because it really dose mean something to me for whatever it was they did and although I don’t forget their face; names sometimes get away......
the next 400 miles without problems down I-90 then I got to the Badlands entrance. I have driven past many times before but never made the trip over to see what everyone talked about. With enough daylight to go see them and still make it to the Spoke before dark the decision was made.... go for it! It was well worth the trip. There are no words to describe the ride other than amazing. There were wild buffalo and mountains that just sprang from the grasslands. Prairie
This year was the first time I ever decided to ride to Sturgis, mainly for 2 reasons. The first reason being money and all I could afford was to ride the bike out and leave the tuck at home. There is something about getting 40 miles per gallon right now that makes you rethink your driving methods when gas hits $4.00 a gallon. The other reason is the stroke I had on May 7th, 2011. There was a point while laying there that I thought I may not be able to walk, speak, play my music or even ride my horses and motorcycles ever again. It was just a freak accident that caused my C-1 C-2 to break apart and cause a dissection of my cerebral artery and it bled into my brain. With the loss of vision all these years of riding and seeing friends suddenly came into focus. I had taken for granted the thousands of miles I’ve ridden and all the friends I’ve made along the way.
Not so fast..... Remember I can’t remember names? Well apparently I can’t remember to bring my cash with me when I pack either. Got to the first gas stop and realized I left it all at home. Thankfully I had my cash station card on me with money in the bank. Got my gas and some food. On the way there I passed two guys who were also on their way to Sturgis. Little did I know that I would run into these two guys from Indiana almost every day of the trip. We talked awhile and after that we were on our way, they were goin’ to run to I-29 and I was taking I-35 to go to the Papa Clutch open house party and use that as a stop point on the trip. The next 250 miles went by smoothly and then got into some rain. I put on my leathers and full face helmet and continued till I got to Ames Iowa. After I got there my plan was to look around and find the shop. I must
be great at makin plans that don’t work out to well because this is when I learned the difference between Ames Iowa and Aimesworth Iowa....its 161 miles! Oops, let the GPS decide where I wanted to go from my bad grammar and now I went too far. I decided to continue on to Sturgis as far as I could go. After riding another 180 miles though the rain it was time to stop for the night in Fairmont MN. I had just made it 505 miles, the longest I’ve been able to make it in months. The next morning I woke up and the neck was taikin a beating from the night before. I had to take my meds and wait till about 11am before I could ride again. I left and it was already nice and sunny, great riding weather. I rode

The next day was Monday. The weather couldn’t be better, warm in the 80s and clear skies. It was time for The Horse Magazine and Full Throttle bike show. There were a lot of great bikes there in every style from home built budget bikes to wild customs. It is a show that is worth checking out for ideas on your next project or just to admire the creativity of all the other builders out there. The show had Roadside Marty keeping the crowd entertained while the band Jackyl rehearsed a song over on a side stage. It was nice being able to spend some time with friends like Kevin “Teach” and Amy Baas, Matt Olsen, Betty Bicycle, Brian Elliot and all the other members of the Limpnickie Lot. Over the years they have really made a place in the industry as fabricators and designers of some of the best bikes around today and I’m happy to call them my friends. I was the only person who brought a Goldwing to a chopper show but can say she realy stands out where ever you put her. Goldilocks is a first year bike and was found in great condition when she was on craigslist for $500. I had to take a few months to bring her back to the road but she’s never let me down (without me askin for it). Later that night was the first of the Baker Burnout Drags. I was one of the builders in the competition and was up against Jay Allen in the first round. Goldi who had won the S&S burnouts in Daytona was up against 5 Harleys this time and it would be a tough time. I pulled her up to the line and awaited Jay and his FXR....... But then it wouldn’t start! Goldie beats the FXR by default..... but then they got Nick Lee to come up in his place. Many of you know Nick as the Worlds Burnout King, he even just set a record this week for longest burnout. Let’s just say best out of 2 ended in 2 and I wasn’t moving on. Nick put on a great show and everyone had a good time that night.
Every one of us out there on the road has a story to tell. Some of us end up well known for what we do in the industry and others are just as important but much less known. People like Bert and Trish over at Baker Drivetrain, the guys at S&S, Jay Allen at The Original Broken Spoke all of whom treat everyone as a friend no matter what you ride. Then there are the people like “Puppy”, “Pow-Pow”, Sasha and even the guy who you have never met who will end up becoming an important part of your life. When I first thought of making this trip, I was all determined that nothing would stop me. I had been knocked down, thrown from the horse you might say. I had already made a great comeback just by being able to get around like I do.... that’s not to say that the meds aren’t working overtime to keep the pain down or the balance stable. This was the ultimate test to me. Would I be able to ride the distance, try to do what I was going to attempt? My plan was bullet proof, hop on a bike and ride....easy enough. So I got my trusty steed Goldi all saddled up, loaded down and ready to make the trip to Sturgis.
something to drink. We all then rode back to the Broken Spoke for burgers and dogs courtesy of Jay Allen. They always make everyone feel welcome when you go there.
Dogs with nests all over the place, the roads wrapped around with surprises at every corner. At one point I was fortunate enough to have someone stop while I was photographing my bike to ask if I wanted to be in the pic and got one with me. For once I can prove I was there not just my bike. I continued on till I got to Sturgis at about 7pm local time on Saturday. It was time for my good friend Jasmine Cain to take the stage at the Broken Spoke. It was a great ending to a long trip and they always have the best bands and the best sound out of all the venues at the rally. I was fortunate enough to have use of Jasmine’s trailer for a place to stay for the week and it was over by the Wall Of Death at the County Line Broken Spoke. I like staying there cause they always have warm clean showers and there is a nice pool if you ever want to relax and jump in. This is also the point in the trip when I realized that I had ridden 1100 miles over 2 days and with all my meds I had to take but I forgot to use sunscreen ....... my nose and face were burnt bad. Sunday was one of the days I didn’t want to miss. It was the Suggar Bear / Micheal Lichter Ride that started from the Broken Spoke Downtown. I have been lucky enough to call both my friend over the years and this is the one time of year that I get to ride with them. There were well over 150 bikes all waiting to go on a great ride through Vanocker Canyon to the town of Nemo S.D. I was riding over to our meeting point on the south end of town with Jay and Kristi when my clutch cable snapped at a stop sign and I had to lay it down on the bars instead of ride into traffic. I was able to repair it within about 5 min since on all long rides I carry cables just in case. No one was hurt and we all continued on the ride. We all had a good time at the staging point and when everyone was there it was time to leave. Once the run started all the bikes rolled out and turned south towards Nemo. The really nice Indian that was being ridden by Ross Tomas pulled into the median and had lost spark. One thing I have leaned over the years is always stop and help a brother of the road when in need. I stopped along with my friend Fred Mathews and once it was obvious we couldn’t fix it here Fred went on to catch the ride and we got a trailer on the way to pick up the Indian to get it fixed. Apparently all the wiring issues were due to a bad toggle switch. I went on down the canyon to meet up with the ride at the ranch in Nemo. About half way there it started raining and then it hit me.... HAIL! I had just given my 1/2 helmet to one of the film crew who was riding in the event so I got my cowboy hat out of the bag to protect my head. I couldn’t park along the road with all the hail coming down and needed to keep moving so I rode through it all the way to the ranch. The hat kept me safe and it didn’t hurt but then I realized I just rode the last 7 miles basically down the side of a mountain on golf balls...... these new enduro tires really rock! The storm slowly passed over our meeting point and as soon as it was gone most of the bikes pulled in for cookies and
Tuesday was going to be a good day. The Cycle Source ride was set to leave the Buffalo Chip at noon and they had Jeremy from Mutten Cycles on the grill cookin up some of the best burgers I’ve had all week. The ride left and went north towards the town of Newell to get fuel. It was a good ride until one of the friends bikes broke down and once again I pulled over to see if I could help. The upper oiler line had vibrated and broke on the Shovelhead causing oil to spill everywhere. I carry a full tool bag and parts with me everywhere so we all took some time and got the line repaired. The ride continued on and we all got gas and continued west to a bar about 10 miles down the road. It was very relaxing to ride with Lyndon and Chickie from Vagabond Choppers. Chickie was riding one of those new Victoy bikes and it was drivin like a dream, Lyndons bike had burnt to the ground a few years back and still has a vice grip as a kickstand.... we are a very diverse group if I do say so.
That evening I was set to work with a film crew to cover Jeff Deckers exhibit in the Micheal Lichter hall at the Buffalo Chip. This was the first time I had ever seen all the workmanship that goes into his sculptures and I now have total respect for him. I have had the privilege of going through the room and learning from Jeff his personal reasons for why he collects what he does and the stories behind every item. He explained how to him a motorcycle that is stationary is nothing more than iron. Its function is that of motion and the beauty of it is how it rides. He tries to capture the act of motion in his sculptures by leaving out the spokes in the wheels as you wouldn’t see spokes on a moving bike. He also elongates the wheels how you would see them in period style pictures. It’s amazing to see how meticulous it is to carve out each piece and then put them together for every statue. His work captures the feelings and emotions of what its like to be there as part of the work of art. He defiantly is a true “Slant Artist” and an inspiration to all my future builds. I then went to round 2 of the Baker Burnout Drags..... Once again I got set up against Jay and his FXR for round 1. Red Yellow Green! Round one was close with Jay getting the win. I prepared for round two by hand shifting the gears, a trick I learned watching Jays other wins. This time I got
to 2nd gear but the motor seemed to be dragging and Jay won. I would soon find out that the knobbys on my tire were holdin the pavement and the rim was spinnin in the tire.
be my friend. He stayed up with me and Brother Speed as we got the old tire off and mounted the new tube. I had to wait till morning to get air from another friend.
Wednesday was suposta be the day for the Biker Magazine bike show at the Spoke. Unfortunately the magazine has fallen victim to the bad economy and the show fell on Jay and Sasha to run. When I arrived I saw that a system was needed to run the show so we all worked together to make it happen. It turned out really well and we had some very beautiful bikes there. It was very hard for the judges and I give them credit, all the bikes were top notch and it made judging very difficult. I can’t wait to see the bikes that come in next year......
That Thursday morning I was up early. I had to get the tire aired up and mounted because I had the first annual “Run to the Ranch” planned to leave at 10:30. Thanks to Craig and Lightning for letting me use their compressor and to Mike from the Wall Of Death for the jack. Goldie was up and runnin again and ready to ride. I was hoping for a big turnout to ride to the Spur Creek Saloon and Ranch. They had been a destination from previous year’s runs but had fallen on hard times over the past few years. I had hoped to bring business their way and give rally goers something new by having the run end with a rodeo open for everyone to bring their bikes in or go riding the horses. At first I only had 2 bikes show up.... we waited for awhile and I knew there was one other on the way. At 11 I sent them to Newell and the ranch and as soon as my friend showed up we pulled out right behind them.
Wednesday was also S&S night downtown. We lined up 4 bikes one of them a drag bike and did the biggest burnout of the whole rally! “Puppy”, whom I had just met a few days prior was on Jays FXR and ran it all the way down till only one ply was holdin it together. The band was playin and the beer was flowin and someone even won a brand new S&S motor that night. The S&S guys are some of the most approachable you have ever met and are a blast to hang out with. At 11pm it was time for the Doubble Bubble contest. I had been making sure all the girls were legal and covered by handing out my Motorcycle Cowboys stickers. I was tired of cutting stickers up for “smaller tasks” so I invented the “Dakotas Pastie Dispenser” ..... remember, it’s made In USA! I think on my next model Ill use stamps.... just make sure you lick em first.
It was a good relaxing ride to the ranch. I was on Goldie my 75 gl1000 and Jay and Kristy were on his Shovelhead. Although it didn’t have the turnout I wanted it was the break we both needed to realize what we are doing this for. We all rode the horses for awhile and enjoyed each other’s company. It was the longest I have been in the saddle with a horse yet this year. Although I was unable to go any faster than a slow trot its poof that I can slowly bring everything back. Sometime the fun is trying to get better than you are not just be content with what you have. This year I may only have been able to bring a few people to the ranch to help support it, but it’s a few more than last year and a start for next year. I can’t wait till next year to give Jay a run at the barrels on horses. Check us out at www. facebook.com/motorcyclecowboys We left the ranch to ride back and just as we pulled out we ran into our friend Keith DeNinno as he’s racin across America in the Hoka Hey Challenge. We escorted him to town as he checked in at the Broken Spoke County Line. He didn’t stay long and made a stop at the downtown location before heading out on the road again. I wish him luck and a safe journey. I hope to see him on the road again someday. That night was fun downtown. Although I didn’t get the turnout to help the ranch I wanted I did however find the support I will need to make this better for next year. I finally had someone in my corner backing me tying to help some people out. Tonight I would celebrate all that I had done and accomplished. Later Jay took the FXR to do a burnout but the tire blew after only 5 seconds......told ya Puppy wore it down. The following day I was scheduled to run the hill climbs at the Broken Spoke County Line. My friend Jack Shit had helped out by getting the promoter to open the hill and to get prizes. Unfortunately there was not enough advertizing for it and it was too late in the schedule to really promote it so it didn’t turnout the way we originally planned. I really appreciate everything Jack did for me and thinking of me as the one to help get it off the ground. Next year we will have more time and better advertizing and bring the Johnny Chop Hill climb to life what it was meant to be.
That night I was drivin back to the county line and as I was going around Bear Butt my rear tire let go form all the spinnin I was givin it. The tube was spent and although I had a new one in my bag I had to get home to put it on. Thankfully I had just added towing to my motorcycle insurance policy. It took me almost an hour to get the person on the phone to figure out where I was though. During that hour do you think any of the bikes stopped to see if I was ok.... or trucks...anyone? It was a beautiful night 3 miles from where I needed to be and then the insurance person finally found me a wrecker.... but it would be 45 min before they could be there. It was still kinda relaxing just sitting against the bike, out amongst the wilderness and enjoying the setting of the moon. It was quiet and peaceful although I swear the coyote howls were getting closer and closer after I opened that beef jerky bag. During this time many people drove past but finally someone I never met before stopped and turned around to see if I was ok. He was just fired from one of the vendors and been given 200 to make it home to Missouri on his bike. Out of everyone the guy who was down on his luck stops to see if he can help a fellow biker. Although I already had a tow on the way he stayed to give me someone to talk to. He had no place to stay and was going to drive all the way home unless he could find work at another vendor the next day or so. I told him he was more than welcome to grab a bunk at my place if he wanted or take my Biker Bed Roll I had just received earlier to help him through. Earlier he was just some stranger riding a bike down the road.... now his name was Tank and weather our roads ever cross again he will
Friday afternoon the neck was really bothering me so I rested for awhile at the trailer for the meds to catch up. I’m defiantly not ready to do as much as I think I can. Sometimes the mind is willing but the body has other plans. When I did make it downtown my friend Sasha could tell I wasn’t feeling well. I could tell she was keeping an eye on me just as all my friends had done all week. Sometimes I push just a bit too far and way too fast thinking I can do what I did but it’s my friends and family that are behind me giving the support I need to get back on my feet. There is no way to tell all of you what that means to me. There are many shows on TV right now based on drama and motorcycles, calling themselves “Reality”. There are ups and downs in all of our lives but the drama is for the TV actors. True biker friends are there for each other even when there are no cameras and aren’t in it for the fame.
go see Deadwood and explore places I have yet to see. Riding your bike is like riding a horse in the old west..... There is a freedom that comes with the wind. It doesn’t matter what breed the steed it’s the direction of the rider that defines the ride. I went to see Jasmine and played a little with her at the last show at the Broken Spoke County Line. We had a good time together as we always do and I’m glad to see things are finally working out for her. Jasmine is more than just one of the best performers you will ever see but one of the best people you will ever meet. Sunday was a hard day for me. I hate when things end. I went to go see everyone as they left and tell them goodbye but there’s always holding back a tear. Sasha and I went down to this Italian restaurant on Main St and I can tell you it’s the best food in Sturgis. We walked around getting things to bring back home to our families. She bought me a lil pin of a wrench that now sits on my hat. Sometimes the littlest things mean the most to a person. My friends mean so much to me and with all that we all have been through every day. When things aren’t what they are suposta be remember that today is nothing more than tomorrows yesterday. I try not to rush everything anymore and not sweat the little things. I enjoy spending time with old friends and meeting new ones. You never know when or where you will meet someone who will change your life and when you’re out there on the road you never alone............ I rode home on Monday. I was trying to push it through to make it in one shot but got 1/2 way and had to stop. When I got to the town of Murdo SD I checked all fluids and had taken out my dash tray to set on the side.... and somehow forgotten it (I forget...Go figure). In it was my GPS, All Access Passes, $10 in change, some tools and my favorite hat with that pin on it......it was that $1 pin that I feared losing the most. Thankfully the people at the Pioneer gas station got it and shipped it to me the next day. Rode the second half on Tuesday and took all I had to make it. I think that will be the limit till I get fully recovered but for now but the stories I will be able to tell will last me a lifetime. Thank You to everyone I met along the way and to those who kept an eye on me as I pushed the limit and fell back just to get up and do it again. Without you the story would read little more than “Someday I will do it”. Everyone has a story to tell if you are willing to listen, ..... Mine just happened to come with a patch.
Jays tire had blown the night before so we pulled it aside and got a new one put on. There is just something about roadside repairs that brings everyone together. I had met Puppy several times during the week but after changing the Dunlops he just felt like an old friend. Every time I saw him he was happy to see me, had another great story to tell and could bring even the worst mood out and make ya feel good again. That’s the type of person that makes it worth going back. Apparently he’s been going there for many many years and this is the first time I have met him, think of all the others out there I have yet to meet and learn from. Later that night me and Jay would go head to head with our bikes and do a burnout. It’s not for prizes it’s just for fun as it should all be. Guess that new tire aint so new anymore........ Saturday I would just relax and ride through the canyons,

Millermatic 211 Auto-Set ™ with MVP™ By Garrett Bahr
The Millermatic 211 is loaded with so many features its tough to find where to start. The most apparent feature that sets the Millermatic 211 apart from other welders is the Auto-Set™ option that alleviates the user from having to figure out the voltage and wire speed based on the metal thickness being welded, or aiding for the lazy. Simply turn a dial to Auto-Set, a blue light will laminate and it is ready to lay beads. The Millermatic still allows the user to manually dial in the settings with its infinite voltage and speed settings. Many of the competing welders only offer limited presets to get the job done. When starting a job the Miller has a Smooth-Start™ technology that provides a spatter-free start to a weld, no popping or spattered welds to clean up when finished.SmoothStart™ This technology provides a smooth spatter-free start. It’s the best-starting machine in the small MIG machine category! No pop gun starts and virtually no spatter to clean up. Smooth-Start™ This technology provides a smooth spatter-free start. It’s the best-starting machine in the small MIG machine category! No pop gun starts and virtually no spatter to clean up. The feature FTM found to be really attractive is the multi-voltage plug (MPV). This gives the alternative from a 230 volt to a 120 volt power receptacle by swapping the plug on the welder with a simple twist to the plugs. This is a great feature for running the high powered welder into 120 volt when a 230 is not present. So run the 230 in a shop setting and run the 120 adapter when on the road through a small generator or the side of building receptacle if need be to get the bike rolling again. The third capability that the Millermatic 211 includes is being able to economically mig weld aluminum and stainless steels, all on one machine. The Spoolmate™ 100 Series is a direct connect spool gun that will help get aluminum repairs completed with little effort. Next month, check back for an in depth article on the Spoolmate 100. The Findings The Millermatic 211 is durable, obtains high quality and gets this machine to a near industrial category with an affordable consumer price. It welds the thickest metal in its class, up to 3/8” thick mild steel and as thin as 24 gauge steel on a single pass with the 230 volt in use. Additional Millermatic 211 Features: • A cast aluminum drive wheel has dual-grooves and a quick-change drive roller, along with a spring-loaded tension arm that has an easy-to-use adjustable tension knob • The “Tip Saver” short circuit protection™ is a great feature that shuts down the welder’s output when tip is shorted to the work. LEFTOVERS
REGIONAL
Often leftovers are never meant to end up on the same plate together... as ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI they were once all part of very different meals. However, in bringing these different flavors together, an entirely new, delicious concoction can be created. The same holds true in music. The Leftovers band consists of four members with very different musical backgrounds. The band is fronted by singer/guitarist Rich White, who played for many years in the local rock band The Saw is Family, who garnered success with their hard-driving riffs and often hilarious lyrical content. Lead guitarist Joey Saturn comes from the world of heavy metal, establishing himself in his own original project Lovely Destruction, as well as playing bass in local metal legends Conquest. Bassist Jen Pruitt’s main influences are rooted in 90’s alternative and grunge music and she’s played in various bands in Boston,Atlanta, and Los Angeles before settling down in St Louis. Drummer Tony Martin brings a diverse set of talents to the table, with experience ranging from classic rock right up through the hits of today. Tony currently drums for The Lindbergh Babies and Mojo, showcasing his talents in performing cover songs as well as original music. These Leftovers from various other bands and genres have combined to form something truly unique. Is it metal? Is it punk? Is it alternative rock? Decide for yourself - The Leftovers’ debut performance was on July 23rd at the Way Out Club so keep your eyes open for their upcoming shows and music at: www.reverbnation.com/leftoversmusic . THE ENDERS
NATIONAL
The Enders is the band that was never supposed to happen. Ben was moving LAFAYETTE, INDIANA into a new place, and when the neighborhood kids saw him carrying guitars into the house, they pointed to the corner house and said ‘that guy over there plays drums!’. A short introduction later, the nucleus of what would soon be The Enders was formed. This was in late 2009, and after the addition of a bass player, a block of songs was written. And by February of 2010, the first EP was cut. The band’s influences are diverse. Take equal parts old-school punk and Oi, first wave Hardcore like Minor Threat, thrash, and NYHC like Sick Of It All and H2O, and you begin to see where The Enders’ singular sound comes from. Rough and raw, the band has created a sound all their own and it caught on fast. As 2010 drew to a close and more frequent shows and tours became a part of the band’s existence, the need for a new bass player arose. Enter Canadian Pete. A longtime hardcore/punk guitar player, he had recently switched to bass and so the lineup was solidified. The band has taken its sound across the midwest and east coast and hope to be back in the studio for a full length to be released in early 2012. INTERNATIONAL
THE SQUARE PEG This scottish punk rock band formed in 1984. The Square Peg featured EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND ex-Exploited guitarist Big John, bassist Gary McCormack and Larry on vocals. This line-up released two 7” vinyl singles in 1984 /85 . Larry reformed the band in 2005 with a new line-up of Needles from The Swellbellys on guitars and ex-Threats members on drums and bass. Together they released the album “Regeneration”. Described as “rock solid, competent punk with swagger”, “Who Are You” is an impressive opener for the record and it is full throttle from there on. The 14 track album includes a cover of The Damned song “Stab Your Back” which is one of the best Damned covers heard in many a year, capturing the original energy and snot of the track. A big wall of guitar and a relentless backing, this is punk rock in the traditional fashion. The record was released on Larry’s label Stranded Records. The band has gone through a few line-up changes over the last 5 years with Larry being the original Square Peg and the constant frontman of the band. The present line-up is recording a new album to be released later this year called “Refugees”. For more info go to; http://www.thesquarepeg.co.uk or http://www.strandedrecords-scotland.co.uk - music available on I-Tunes, Amazon and CD Baby.

Full Throttle SAFETY ASYLUM BY T.J. MILES
2011 Bikefest Safety
A
s you may already know, BIKEFEST 2011 is right around the corner. I can’t wait! Safety at large motorcycling events is something we all think about, but rarely discuss. There are things to think about before and during motorcycling events which may prevent you from the sudden interruption of a great time at the 2011 Bikefest. Can I get a “Hell Yea”?
Respect If you are going to ride like an asshole please kill yourself somewhere else or stay the hell home. There are some who engage in speeding, wheelies and other dangerous riding behaviors. Show respect to others on the roadway and you are likely to avoid serious and catastrophic accidents.
Alcohol Ride hammered, get nailed. Above all, don’t drink and ride, with the amount of other vehicles large and small passing through the area, the curvy roads, and the other riders not paying attention, you are asking for a death warrant. This is no big secret and varies by event, but often alcohol usage is high, and there may be more intoxicated drivers on the road than usual. No one should get behind the wheel of a car or on a motorcycle if they have had too much to drink. This is true no matter where you ride. Driving or riding under the influence is against the law in every state. If you are in an accident the first thing you will be asked (if you are still alive) is, “Have you been drinking?” I plan to ride during the day and settle down to a nice party place within walking distance of my bed in the evening.
Riding Bigger events, such as Bikefest, include a lot of motorcyclists driving to one small, central location. Bike congestion can be a risk for motorcyclists and other drivers alike. Motorcyclists are encouraged to ride in a single file line and avoid crowding the center line or other motorists. Don’t ride two abreast or pass another motorcycle in the same lane. Lane splitting is illegal in Missouri. Don’t pass in a “No Passing” zone. If you are an inexperienced rider, park your bike because Bikefest is not the place to learn how to ride. Don’t tailgate. Allow at least one bike length for every 10 mph of speed. It gives you a little extra room in case you’re distracted for a split second. Leave the autopilot at home. When riding in groups it’s easy to narrow your focus to the tail light in front of you. Remember to broaden your vision and keep an eye on traffic conditions and other drivers/riders. Otherwise, you may follow your buddy right into the lake. All motorcyclists and motorists need to obey all posted speed limit signs, especially on curves. Deer are abundant in central Missouri and have a habit of coming out at night. Pay attention to curves. No doubt you’ll want to see every curve on the sidewalk, especially the ones in bikinis. But watch the road also. There are lots of winding roads. Brake before the curve, enter at a conservative speed and then accelerate through once you’re sure of the line. Pay attention to your riding and watch out for the other rider who isn’t.
Situational Awareness Watch for pedestrians in congested areas and as Mom always said, “Look both ways before you cross the street. Always keep an eye out for possible signs of a fight. Tempers have a tendency to flare when mixing head strong bikers with alcohol. Usually there is a girl somewhere in the mix. However, the police at Bikefest are vigilant and keep up with any public displays of affection. Always have a good wingman with you to help identify danger. An unfortunate aspect of any large event is the disappearance of motorcycles. Participants should take precautions to avoid becoming a victim. Care should be taken to park in well lit, high traffic locations as opposed to dark areas with few people. Additionally, participants should avoid leaving valuables such as cameras, leathers and souvenirs on their bikes. Those who will be attending the event should also invest in a high quality lock to secure their bike. Even higher quality locks are not fool-proof to experienced thieves but they are a definite deterrent. Lower quality locks are not considered adequate protection because they can easily be broken or cut. Pay attention to the signs that say NO PARKING and the curbs that are painted yellow. If you park by these your bike will be towed and you will be walking to the police station to get directions to the impound yard. This can cut into your fun money. The jails and emergency rooms will be full. Both can be avoided with a little common sense. These certainly are not characteristics of Bikefest, but police officers and experienced riders alike suggest exercising extra caution and awareness.
Traveling Participants who will be traveling long distances to Bikefest on their motorcycles should also be aware of safety issues while traveling. Even those experienced with long distance rides should take safety precautions to ensure a smooth trip. One precaution is to create a copy of your detailed itinerary to leave in the possession of a friend or relative who will not be traveling with you. Make sure your bags are tightly secured to the motorcycle. You don’t want straps to become a permanent part of your rear hub. Also, you don’t want to be the cause of your buddy’s accident. Travelers are also warned against traveling alone. Whenever possible, travelers should have at least one other rider accompany them on their trip. It makes me think about the end of the movie “Easy Rider”. We all know how that ended. Taking frequent stops to rest and retiring for the night before fatigue sets in is also advisable. Check the weather forecast before the ride and keep a close eye on the sky. There is no shame on waiting out the storm, as long as it is not in a bar.
Road Construction At the present time there is construction on Route 54 at Old Bass Road, Route 54 at Route E, Route 54 between the Grand Glaize Bridge to west of Route KK, Route 54 westbound lanes near Jefferies Road and just west of the Grand Glaize Bridge, Route 242/Horseshoe Bend Parkway between the Lake of the Ozarks Community Bridge and Route 54, Route O between Route 54 and end of state maintenance, Route N between Route 54 and end of state maintenance, Route W bridge over Mack’s Creek, I-44 in Crawford and Rolla areas and I-70 in Wentzville and Warren areas. Route your trip around or be careful when in these areas. Hey, you’re going to Bikefest! It’s crowded, it’s crazy, and it’s survivable… Have fun and be safe!!
Helmets Yeah, yeah, let the rider decide. Well decide already! In the immortal words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, “Follow me if you want to live.” Missouri requires motorcyclist and passengers to wear a DOT approved helmet when riding. A helmet offers the best protection against a spinal cord injury or a traumatic brain injury. Reduce your chances of sustaining a fatal injury by wearing the appropriate gear, including helmets. Military personnel are required to wear a helmet and gear all of the time. Yes, even at Bikefest!

Jack Daniels Customs By Sue Daniels
sue@fullthrottlemidwest.com
When you live in a small town, keeping a secret can sometimes be a very hard task. Is “JACK DANIELS CUSTOMS” a secret? No way, it is becoming more & more talked about every day & once you’ve seen his work you will understand why. Located on hwy. 63 in Licking, MO there is a young man with a passion for building bikes & when you were given a name like Jack Daniels, you’re a third generation biker, with a father who has a history of building bikes & you inherit your grandfathers ability to fabricate anything you can dream up, then you have a great shot at fulfilling that passion. Jack Daniels built his first chopper at the young age of 16 & entered it in a Thunder Roads Bike Show in Ozark, AR. He came home with not only a trophy of 1st place in his class but, also Best of Show. This was the beginning of fulfilling his dream of becoming a bike builder. While attending machinist school he decided to start building a custom trike. By this time he had already built several custom choppers but, there was the desire to build a trike. His 1st trike project was a 1980 Shovelhead. With a spiderweb theme in mind, he was off & running. He fabricates everything, this is not a kit that you bolt on & there is no plastic involved. There are many hours spent in machining the rear-end, molding the metal body, twisting the accessories all the way to building the springer front-end. His first trike he kept a step by step journal that you can flip thru & get an idea of all that was put into this build. When he wanted a machine to twist metal & couldn’t find exactly what he was looking for, he decided to build one, which has served its purpose quite well. This allows him to twist metal without the use of heat, which can weaken it & it also leaves the piece the same size when finished as in the beginning. Every ride that has left the shop so far has been unique in its own way. When ask “Do you only trike Harleys?” The reply is,” NO.” He says he doesn’t care what kind of bike you ride, he will trike it. Some have their own ideas of what they want & others just kind of turn him loose & see what he can think up. If you can dream it, I’m sure he can build it, after all that is the definition of CUSTOM. I have had a first row seat watching this young man grow up & develop into the master builder & fabricator that he is today, for this is my son & thanks to him I own the first trike he ever built & what a joy it is to ride down the road on, not only for the fact that it never fails to turn heads but, for the fact that I am proud to say, “My son built it.” If you are looking for a ride that no one else has, then chances are he can build it for you! I hope to see all of you at “Bikefest!”
