Godly Play transforms
First Kidz
BY Bill Sumrall, FUMCA Communications Assistant
An exciting new direction in our children’s ministry is under way using a program developed through the Godly Play Foundation. “Godly Play is a different way of teaching children about the Bible and God’s Word,” said Cara Lowry, director of Children & Family Ministries for First United Methodist Church Alexandria. She introduced the concept during a Children’s Ministry meeting following Sunday’s 11 a.m. worship service Aug. 2, 2015.
The roots
of what developed into the Godly Play program began with Maria Montessori in Italy, Lowry explained during a follow-up interview Monday, Aug. 3, 2015. Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952) was an Italian physician and educator best known for the philosophy of education that bears her name that is in use today in some public and private schools throughout the world, according to Wikipedia. Montessori education is "a method of educating young children that stresses development of a child's own initiative and natural abilities, especially through practical play. This method allowed children to develop at their own
pace and provided educators with a better understanding of child development," Wikipedia states. Godly Play was developed by Dr. Jerome W. Berryman, who studied the history of the Montessori approach to religious education and is presently Director the Center for the Theology of Childhood, which is part of the Godly Play Foundation, established in late 2007. This is the research center for the Godly Play Foundation and is located in Denver, Colo., according to www. GodlyPlayFoundation.org. "Children have an innate sense of the presence of God," the Godly Play Foundation website states. "The Godly Play approach helps them to explore their faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience though wonder and play. Also the event is expected to be broadcast on ESPN, according to a report Wednesday, July 8, on KALB-TV. “It’s really unusual to have two people out of the same gym,” Lauve said. Lauve said she has been a member of First United Methodist Church Alexandria since she was about three years old and laughed when asked if started running then too. “I started running as an adult when I was about 25, probably to lose weight,” she said. “I was obsessed with my weight -- I got a little heavy in high school and started running to slim down, and then continued running and started distance and also got involved in a couple of 5Ks locally and did pretty well, and then did a 10K in 2000,” Lauve said, referring to one of the first Red River Runs, where she won in her age group. “When you’re old it’s not that tough to win your age group,” she said with a laugh. “And then I got into triathlons after that.” A triathlon combines swimming, biking and running. “I did some short triathlons for a couple of years, and then in 2011 I did an Iron Man, which is a 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile bike and a marathon on top of that, which is 26.2 miles. It took me close to 14 hours. That was at the Woodlands right outside of Houston (Texas),” she said.
Lauve is an owner and co-coach at CrossFit South Bank, founded in April of 2013. “When we opened our gym, there were about 7,000 CrossFits. You can only choose a name that hasn’t been used before that they approve. I could not think of a name, so I Googled Alexandria and Alexandria sits on the south bank of the Red River, so it means nothing other than that,” she said. “People think it’s a bank, like a bank with a teller,” she added, laughing. Her husband, Lewis, a local attorney, also participates in CrossFit but is not competitive. “The thing about CrossFit, it’s for everybody,” she said. “Most people do CrossFit just to be fit for life and I just take it to the next level and compete in it.”
“And that’s how I got into CrossFit, because I was training for that and I wanted to get and faster and stronger,” she Ages range from kids as young as 5 to people in their 70s said, adding that CrossFit was “totally new to Alexandria who have participated in the gym, which has more than at that time.” 100 people as members, Lisa said. “Treating the body like a temple and keeping it as healthy as possible through good flexibility, strength, stamina, balance, you name it, as well as maintaining it through diet, making sure you’re well hydrated, getting enough sleep, so that we not only can perform in CrossFit but perform in life,” she said. 12 August/September 2015 | CONNECTION

Last year, Lauve qualified in the 19th spot out of 20 and came out 15th overall in her age division. “To be able to qualify and go back the second year is a thrill,” she said. “I’m hoping to do better in the workouts. CrossFit is based on “functional movement,” Lauve said, citing as examples being able to pick up a heavy battery or a grandchild and moving a truck tire on a farm or furniture in a house – “teaching you how to lift in an appropriate way” plus conditioning of the cardiovascular system.
